(CNS) - A former campus supervisor at Diegueno Middle School in Encinitas who was arrested last year on suspicion of molesting a 12-year-old student pleaded guilty to sex-related charges this week is slated to be sentenced in June to a stipulated 28-year state prison term following his guilty pleas entered Tuesday Prosecutors alleged Galeana molested the girl and had been communicating with her and other students in an overly familiar fashion including asking the students to delete their text message conversations with him because he could get in trouble A lawsuit was later filed in San Diego Superior Court against Galeana and the San Dieguito Union High School District on behalf of the lead victim in the case Attorneys representing the girl say district officials missed "red flags" regarding Galeana's behavior toward her and other students He frequently drove the girl and other students in his car regularly communicated with students over text messages and social media applications and often spent time alone with students in secluded areas of the campus The complaint alleged that allowing Galeana to have "solitary and unfettered access to children" provided him the opportunity to sexually abuse the girl both on and off campus School district officials said at the time that the district "took immediate action to remove him from employment and work cooperatively with law enforcement" once they learned of the allegations The Galeana Automotive Group has announced the opening of their Jeep/Chrysler new location in Mount Pleasant A prestigious player in the High School District alleges the school system failed to properly supervise a staffer who was charged in March with molesting the 12-year-old girl The lawsuit filed against the district and former school supervisor Omar Galeana alleges the employee gave marijuana to the girl and drove her in his car to the beach and a park “That is a sign of early grooming meaning that he was trying to get her to trust him,” said Morgan Stewart The lawsuit alleges the district knew or had reason to know Galeana posed a risk to children but despite that allowed him to work as a trusted school supervisor went to the principal and reported that they had concerns,” said Stewart Diegueno was arrested and charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors relating to the alleged March 23rd assault and for contributing to the delinquency of a second minor The lawsuit alleges the district allowed Galeana to spend considerable amounts of time with minors unsupervised and says he utilized “grooming techniques” to get close to her and other students He used WhatsApp and social media to communicate with students The district attorney successfully argued against bail for Galeana earlier this year He’s pleaded not guilty to the charges but hasn’t filed a response to the lawsuit The San Dieguito Union High School District said it had not yet received the lawsuit Spokesman Edwin Mendoza said when the allegations were brought to the district’s attention last spring “We took immediate action to remove him from employment and work cooperatively with law enforcement so the facts could be gathered and justice may be served.” He encouraged anyone with additional information to contact the San Diego Sheriff’s Department “We continue to hope that justice will be served in this situation,” he said over two decades As a two-time alumna of San Diego State University Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Theresa Garcia ('91 '09) has demonstrated steady support for College of Engineering students.  and Science Achievement (MESA) program in 1991 Garcia was surrounded by students who were interested in STEM but had yet to realize their path forward.  That’s when she became passionate about helping students identify their dreams.  When Garcia became director of MESA in 1997 she began giving back to the college every month through the payroll deduction program “I was inspired to help students realize their dreams to become engineers or scientists,” she said but what I could contribute was helping incrementally she has become one of the most loyal faculty or staff donors of the College of Engineering “It was to serve the students and truthfully that’s just been my work to serve students and help them reach their success.” Garcia can personally resonate with the obstacles students face because she was a first-generation college graduate who hadn't initially realized her call to higher education.  Coming from a family of agricultural workers college was never in her line of sight until she was approached by a high school teacher who encouraged her to apply.    being guided by a high school teacher and others I just want to help others because it changed my life and it changed the lives of all of my family members after me.” The assistant dean now holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management and she credits the teacher who inspired her to pursue her education Garcia directly understands the impact that giving back has on student achievement.  “It is truly the people that helped me that I am where I am It was because of the teacher that put me on the path to college.”  she increased her contribution when she named the MESA Collaborative Annex with alumna Daisy Galeana ('98) in the Center for Student Success in Engineering Garcia’s support as a staff member and donor is reflected in the success that MESA and College of Engineering alumni have achieved after graduation.  I was a first-generation college student raised by my grandparents and without the opportunities that MESA and Theresa provided I don’t know where I would be,” said MESA graduate Jeremiah Jeffries (‘15).  After spending some time working in industry Jeffries earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and began teaching for the San Diego Unified School District at Lincoln High School in the Valencia Park community.  Garcia connected him with Director of Outreach Luis Topete who manages the K-12 MESA programs and together they re-established a MESA program at Lincoln.  Jeffries brought his high schoolers to Senior Design Day on campus to meet professors and view the inspiring projects that the students had created.  As a teacher at a low socio-economic high school Jeffries finds it especially important to bring his students to a college campus to interact with engineers “It helps them establish long-term goals and envision themselves in the future,” he said.  “These are the kinds of stories that inspire me to continue doing what I’m doing to help someone else,” said Garcia.   This is why she continues to give to the college She encourages others who would like to give back to consider the payroll deduction program as well For driveway of the complex and taking down the suspect with a running jump The K-9 lost all of his incisor teeth from the impact and let go of his grip for a brief moment allowing the suspect to temporarily gain the upper hand As the suspect grabbed Puskas’ throat and tried to strangle him the dog managed to free himself and grab his attacker by the arm Puskas didn’t let go again until Galeana took the suspect into custody News footage of Puskas’ heroics in February quickly went viral and made the 9-year-old police dog from Southern California an international star the dramatic capture seen around the world was just another day on the job It was what Puskas trains for every single day “He did great despite the injuries he sustained All of our dogs would have done the same thing,” Galeana said I will brag about Puskas a bit; he’s very athletic so I don’t know that all our dogs would have leaped 15 feet for a bite.” Galeana and Puskas – named after the famous Hungarian of training which is where Puskas’ dedication to the job is most evident Despite being the oldest of the seven K-9s in the Santa Ana Police Department Puskas came from Europe having already received some training in control he underwent a five-week training course with his handler to mold what he’d already learned into police work Puskas formally trains with Galeana four hours each week in addition to an eight-hour session with the entire K-9 team per month “If I’m going out in the field to just toss the ball with him “We’re constantly training and making sure our dogs are up to par for when we need to use them on the streets.” Anyone with a dog knows that training isn’t always easy In addition to the difficulties that come with training a “normal” dog getting a K-9 where it needs to be presents its own set of challenges it can be difficult for K-9s to obey commands in the middle of activities such as chasing a ball Bite work and directional training can also be difficult “We train every week to make sure we keep that up because once you have the dog where he should be I can do whatever I want today,” Galeana said Galeana considers himself fortunate that Puskas is a good listener “He’s a very senior dog and understands the game Puskas had to stick with soft food during his recovery It’s hard to overstate the intensity of K-9 training and it takes a tough pup to be a successful working dog Of the three injuries Puskas has suffered in the line of duty In the middle of his initial five-week course he fractured his jaw during a takedown and lost one of his canine teeth during a desert session with a neighboring agency’s SWAT team he was bit by a rattlesnake and required two days of hospitalization “Poor dog’s been through quite a lot,” Galeana said “He’s cost my department a lot of money,” he added he needed surgery to pull out his broken teeth get the roots removed and take bone fragments out of his gums seeing your partner injured can be extremely difficult But Galeana wasn’t worried about the dog’s physical pain – Puskas didn’t even seem aware he was injured What Galeana feared was his partner’s ability to continue working in law enforcement “What I didn’t want to do is retire him because of the injury,” Galeana said “I want to retire him because he’s completed his service and he’s done his job to the best of his ability I want him to continue to work because our dogs don’t do well with retirement.” Besides being a little impatient to return to work his recovery went smoothly and he was in fighting shape a couple of months after the incident transitioning from working dog to pet can be difficult – sometimes disastrous Galeana has seen what can happen to a K-9 when they have to become a house pet when all they want to do is work With Puskas’ retirement fast approaching (Santa Ana K-9s normally hang up the badge at age 10 or 11) Galeana has worked with the dog over time at learning to be a pet and letting go of the law enforcement side of his life that he loves so much “I don’t want to shock him when he suddenly doesn’t come to work I’ve been steadily breaking him into the house so he can get accustomed to being a pet,” Galeana said which is great because at home he understands he’s off work and doesn’t have to be on the lookout I got lucky that way because he has no interest in doing any of that He spends more time with him than anyone else in his life Galeana knows Puskas will always have his back they’re out in the squad car looking for crime Galeana prepares to take Puskas home from the hospital people would think I’m crazy because I talk to Puskas all the time Should we not?’ Just like it’s another person in the car,” Galeana said When they’re not protecting the community on the beat they’re making an impact inside the classroom “He’s been a great ambassador to our department We do a lot of demonstrations for schools,” Galeana said “He loves being in the spotlight and the kids love him.” Puskas is a guardian and companion for Galeana’s wife and his two teenage kids “These dogs are mostly single-person – they don’t respond to anybody else but the handler just because that’s what he does – he follows me everywhere I go Galeana can’t imagine a better partnership “It’s a good feeling to know that every time I get out of the car he’s always looking at me – always – and I know he’s got my back All I gotta do if I get into any kind of trouble is push a button on my belt and he’ll come out running to defend me he’ll lay down and give me his stomach to scratch He’s a sweetheart of a dog and I trust him to protect me So I have to make sure that he’s safe and he’s well taken care of so that he can continue to protect all of us Copyright © 2025 Lexipol.
