He was a teenager when he left to build a new life in a new country. He’s 29 now and back in El Salvador, this time in prison, a father of three caught in a standoff among President Donald Trump
some members of Congress and the Salvadoran government
Abrego Garcia’s deportation – and the Trump administration’s refusal to return him to the United States, even though it admits he was sent back to El Salvador by mistake – has made him the most high-profile target of Trump’s campaign to expel millions of migrants who entered the United States illegally
The Justice Department insists Abrego Garcia is a member of a dangerous criminal gang
who had lived in Maryland for years before he was deported
The small terrace house he lived in with his parents and two siblings is still standing
referred to affectionately as “Cece” by old friends

“There was never trouble with gangs here,” said a man who would only give his name as Jorge
“I’ve lived here for 20 years and never had a problem.”
Jorge’s sentiments were echoed by almost a dozen of Abrego Garcia’s close neighbors
friends and neighborhood acquaintances interviewed by USA TODAY
The paper is identifying Jorge and other locals only by their first names because they fear reprisals from El Salvador’s increasingly authoritarian government
Members of Abrego Garcia’s family denied multiple USA TODAY interview requests to speak about his early years in El Salvador and his home life
a five-minute walk to the calle principal would land him in gang territory
Los Nogales was surrounded on all sides by “troubled” neighborhoods where bandidos run rampant

The bar’s previous owners had to sell because the payments to Barrio 18 were too burdensome
His wife pointed to where a cluster of popular restaurants once sat
closed because of financial pressure from the bandidos
Whether Abrego Garcia’s family was the victim of Barrio 18
But they did know the family had fallen on hard times
that’s why they had to sell up and leave,” Fredy said
Cece long planned for her sons to leave El Salvador and the dangers lurking there

she also told USA TODAY she sought the 2021 order out of precaution because she had experienced domestic violence in a past relationship
Abrego Garcia was working at a job site in Baltimore

Questions about Abrego Garcia’s location and status – including those ordered by the federal judge overseeing the case – remained unanswered

So he headed to the Central American country to check on Abrego Garcia himself
The two-day trip had proved fruitless: Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa had denied the senator’s request to enter CECOT. Van Hollen’s last-minute push to drive to the prison and demand a meeting was thwarted by a military checkpoint. Less than two miles away, armed military personnel pulled over his small convoy of vehicles
“He is totally beyond reach,” Van Hollen said at the side of the road

they were to fly back to the United States

President Donald Trump openly declared that he has the power to bring the wrongfully deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the United States
Trump said straight out that he is not doing so because administration lawyers have told him he doesn’t have to—or that he shouldn’t
This has been widely seen as an admission that Trump is defying the Supreme Court, which has directed the administration to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return
But these two moments are also their own story
They offer a unique glimpse into the deep rot of bad faith infesting Trump and Stephen Miller’s broader project to expand the president’s removal powers into something extraordinarily vast and entirely unaccountable
They also show how Trump is inadvertently sabotaging his case against Abrego Garcia—and that broader project as well—with his bumbling incompetence
“Bringing him back and retrying him wouldn’t bother me,” Trump told Time magazine
Trump was even more direct in a recent interview with ABC News
“I could,” Trump shrugged when asked if he could pick up the phone and get Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to release Abrego Garcia from the prison in that country where he is currently wasting away
“If he were the gentleman that you say he is
“But he’s not.” Trump added that “we have lawyers that don’t want to do this.”
Abrego Garcia’s lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, says he will now pursue answers to the many questions these admissions raise. This is doable because the federal district judge overseeing this case, Paula Xinis, has initiated discovery designed to reveal what steps
the government has taken to facilitate his return
opening the way for depositions of administration officials
“The president has now said on two occasions that he could easily bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the United States
but he’s been told not to do so,” Sandoval-Moshenberg emailed me
“We’re going to keep moving forward with the discovery process
peeling back layer after layer of the onion
until we find out exactly which government officials gave him that instruction.”
Which lawyers have told Trump that he is not required to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return
What exactly transpired in these communications
Which top official—aside from Trump—is internally directing the lawyers to advise Trump this way
“These lawyers appear to be obeying Stephen Miller and not the Supreme Court,” says Chris Newman
“Miller himself should be deposed under oath in federal court to determine his role in this ongoing affront to due process.”
Admittedly, it will be tough to get such answers. But as David Kurtz and Josh Kovensky of Talking Points Memo detail
who has also ordered Abrego Garcia’s return
has taken a stern line against the administration’s refusal to be forthcoming on what it’s doing toward that end
She seems determined to establish a blow-by-blow account of government malfeasance
So it’s plausible she will try to direct the administration to fill in unknowns about why Trump is refusing to act
given his open admission that he can do so at any time
“Trump keeps saying that he has the power to bring Abrego Garcia back but that the only hangup is his lawyers,” Roger Parloff, a senior editor at the Lawfare website who has closely tracked this case
I think Judge Xinis will try to get to the bottom of that.”
this opens a major new story line for reporters to plumb
And here’s why this matters: Trump’s admissions along those lines—and whatever more we learn about internal deliberations over this—badly sabotage the administration’s larger case for not bringing Abrego Garcia home
The administration keeps arguing that Trump does not have the power to command Bukele to release Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran himself. That’s already a weak defense—we are paying El Salvador to hold people at Trump’s pleasure—but Trump’s admission that he can bring Abrego Garcia back anytime he wants makes it even weaker
If Trump genuinely conveyed to Bukele that he wants Abrego Garcia back
What’s more, Trump and other top officials refuse to do this by insisting Abrego Garcia is a public safety menace based on his alleged MS-13 gang ties. The case for MS-13 ties is incredibly weak on its merits
But Trump’s admission that he can bring Abrego Garcia back and retry him for removal anytime he wants makes it even weaker
which violated his “withholding of removal” status
There is no reason whatsoever not to return him and then try to remove him through more lawful channels—by contesting that status or deporting him to a third country—as opposed to doing so illegally
Trump has now admitted he can take this alternate path anytime he wants
again by fiat; and then to have quasi-unlimited power to remove them
“The judicial process is for Americans,” Miller has said
“Immediate deportation is for illegal aliens.” He appears to want to dispense with due process for migrants entirely—the Constitution be damned
Drunk with hubris and high on his sad little fascist fantasies
Miller believes he can bury Americans in propaganda about criminal migrants
seducing them into embracing unchecked presidential power as essential to securing public safety
But Trump’s blithe admission that he can follow the law on Abrego Garcia anytime he wants to—and is not doing so because someone
somewhere told him he doesn’t have to—reveals this as entirely unmoored from anything resembling public order and the rule of law
The more transparency we have gained into the rot of corruption and bad faith at the core of this whole saga

The ATA not only offers scholarships to teachers staying in Arizona after graduation but also provides built-in mentorship and support while students are enrolled and after they graduate
was accepted and started taking online classes from her home in Florence
working more school into an already busy life—Garcia is a mom of four
a full-time teacher and takes care of her parents— wasn’t easy
She didn’t sleep as much as she wanted and missed events she wanted to attend
“There were so many nights I stayed up working on assignments after helping with homework
cooking dinner and prepping for the next school day,” Garcia said
“I went through some deeply personal family challenges during this time
including moments that nearly made me stop altogether
But my children were always watching and I didn’t want them to see me give up
I wanted to prove to myself and my kids that dreams are worth chasing
She took classes online with her time already in the classroom counting for the student teaching requirement
Garcia applied what she learned in her college classes to her own classroom of middle school students
and she took her experiences in her classroom and worked them into her own assignments
she passed all of the necessary qualifying exams

laughed about how different our class styles are and even struggled through a few hard semesters together,” Garcia said

Green wants to work at a public relations firm or in social media for a lifestyle or wellness brand—something people-focused that gives her the chance to put what she’s learned to use
“I’m also not ruling out more travel,” she said
“I’d love to keep exploring before I fully settle into a 9-to-5 for sure.”

It began when a THP trooper stopped Abrego Garcia for speeding
he noticed very dark windows and Texas plates on the Suburban
A woman in the front seat never spoke or looked at the trooper

Not only was there an obvious language barrier
THP told WKRN they contacted both the FBI and Homeland Security during the stop
neither federal agency responded to the scene
since there were no violations or crimes committed
the vehicle and all its passengers were released
THP sent News 2 the following statement about the incident: “The THP complied fully with applicable law and coordinated with the appropriate federal authorities.”
According to the Associated Press, police in Maryland identified Abrego Garcia as an MS-13 member based on his tattoos
but his lawyers said the informant claimed Abrego Garcia was in an MS-13 chapter in New York

and whose alleged misdeeds have no relevance whatsoever to his right to be free from extrajudicial imprisonment abroad
Abrego Garcia went on to make a life for himself in Maryland. He married an American citizen. He started a family. And he was picking up his 5-year-old son after work on March 12 when he was seized by immigration agents
The Salvadoran government published photos days later celebrating its receipt of a shipment of American migrants
It was then that Abrego Garcia’s family learned that the Trump administration claimed he was a gang member and sent him to the Center for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT)
Abrego Garcia has not been charged or convicted of anything, and the United States has conceded in court filings that his removal from the country was an “administrative error.” Multiple courts have also ordered the government to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador
But the Trump administration has refused to bring him home
the government and cooperative media outlets have been alternately digging up dirt on Abrego Garcia and inventing an outlandishly false criminal history to justify denying him his constitutionally guaranteed process
In an April 14 press release, for instance, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin likened Abrego Garcia to Osama bin Laden. McLaughlin contended that the media wanted the public to believe Abrego Garcia is “just a Maryland father” but “Osama Bin Laden was also a father
wearing one seems to be about as useful an indicator of MS-13 membership as using Colgate toothpaste
Additionally, DHS uncovered and publicized two unredacted petitions for an order of protection filed by Abrego Garcia’s wife
McLaughlin argued that the existence of the petitions proved that Abrego Garcia is “a violent illegal alien who abuses women and children,” and justified his warrantless arrest and summary removal to a country to which he could not legally be removed
“He had no business being in our country and we are proud to have deported this violent thug,” said McLaughlin

Throughout his long history of illegal and offensive behavior
If criminality—or even danger to women—were the proper basis for removal
then it would be Trump who should be summarily shipped to a cell in El Salvador
and the means through which allegations are proven
Yet the Trump administration and its allies are attempting to use these stories to legitimize the violations of Abrego Garcia’s constitutional rights
Ironically, it is Jennifer Vasquez Sura, Abrego Garcia’s alleged victim, who understands this best. After the government and conservative media publicized a painful part of her personal life, Sura forcefully argued that Abrego Garcia’s alleged misconduct does not cancel out constitutional rights
That is not a justification for ICE’s action of abducting him and deporting him to a country where he was supposed to be protected from deportation,” said Sura
“I will continue to stand by him and demand justice for him.”
It is easier for oppressive governments to undermine rights writ large if they start with people who are unpopular
The Trump administration’s attacks on Abrego Garcia aim to normalize the conservative view that rights are something to which they alone are entitled
and which they can selectively bestow upon others as they see fit
By trying to convince the public that Abrego Garcia is a bad guy so he doesn’t deserve rights
conservatives are implicitly and necessarily trying to get Americans to reject the principle that rights are for everyone
and not just the special favorites of the Republican Party

All he needs now is a proper dance partner to work his way back up the pound-for-pound ladder
One thing is for sure: Friday night created more problems than solutions

his first defeat after 32 consecutive wins
Lopez called out welterweight claimant Jaron Ennis with a clever Dora the Explorer reference after his triumph
but it makes just as much sense to get together with Romero
whose defeat of Garcia made him the WBA's second-tier champ at 147
Just by being ringside for Canelo's dreary defeat of Scull
a former two-time undisputed champ (at 140 and 147)
First off, he gets full marks for staying awake through 12 rounds in which 111 punches were landed and the 445 punches thrown were the fewest in CompuBox’s 40-year history of ringside counting.
But he made big news by climbing into the ring to go nose to nose with Alvarez, simultaneously erasing the stench of the Scull debacle and starting to countdown to the September 12 showdown at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
It's already earned "fight of the century" status from Turki Al-Sheikh and got the seal of competitive approval from Lampley, who called many of "Bud's" fights on HBO and legitimized the match based on the lighter man's outsized determination.
"One of his biggest assets is maniacal competitiveness," Lampley told Bleacher Report. "If we can't tell him he can't do something it triples his desire to do it."

Blow-by-blow men Bernardo Osuna and Joe Tessitore and analyst Tim Bradley pointed out the statistical flops from New York and Riyadh at every opportunity and their card's top end delivered, with a fun featherweight scrap between Rafael Espinoza and Edward Vazquez followed by Naoya Inoue's surprisingly tough defense of his 122-pound supremacy.
Espinoza and Vazquez combined to land nearly twice as many punches through six rounds as Canelo Alvarez and WIlliam Scull did through 12.
The Japanese "Monster" got to 30-0 with a 25th title-fight victory, which came this time with an eighth-round finish of Ramon Cardenas, but only after he'd climbed off the deck from a second-round knockdown.
Bradley couldn't resist a reference to the Manhattan and Saudi shows.
"You see fighters talking on social media. You see fighters running around the ring like chickens with their heads cut off," he said. "But there’s generational talent here tonight. You came to the right place."
Cardenas, who'd arrived as a bigger underdog than Buster Douglas against Mike Tyson, agreed.
"We set the tone," he said. "What we did was legendary and the next fighters are gonna have to show out to top it."

outlining alleged domestic violence as the legal situation remains at an apparent standstill

though Abrego Garcia was in the United States illegally
Supreme Court ordered the Trump Administration to “facilitate” his return
President Trump and others in his administration maintain they believe Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang
The 2020 protective order was filed by Jennifer Vasquez
Abrego Garcia took her phone and locked her out of the house with her three kids inside
according to the handwritten court documents filed by Vasquez
She told the court she and her kids were afraid
noting that Abrego Garcia had kicked and slapped her before
She also said she had a recording of Abrego Garcia saying “that even if he kills me
Vasquez filed to rescind the protective order
telling the court that the son she shares with Abrego Garcia was celebrating his first birthday
and that Abrego Garcia has agreed to continue counseling
his [sic] willing to sign divorce papers,” Vasquez told the court

The 2020 protective order request was filed a year prior to the 2021 order that’s already been uncovered
Vasquez claimed Abrego Garcia punched and scratched her
Abrego Garcia later ripped her shorts and shirt
Vasquez said Abrego Garcia hit her in August 2020 and left her with “a purple eye.” In November 2020
Vasquez Sura claimed he hit her with his work boot
later stating the two worked out their differences
“We have now found two petitions for protection against him
in addition to the fact that he entered the country illegally and is a confirmed member of MS-13
Our country is safer with him gone,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement
When news first surfaced about the 2021 protective order
Vasquez said she survived domestic violence in a previous relationship
and field for the protective orders “out of caution.”
“We were able to work through this situation privately as a family
including by going to counseling,” her statement said
“Our marriage only grew stronger in the years that followed

Abrego Garcia was detained in 2019 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and alleged to be a member of the MS-13 gang. He has vehemently denied the affiliation.
A judge dismissed Ramos’ petition in February 2019, a month before Abrego Garcia was detained.
In November 2019, Ramos was charged with second degree rape, according to court records.
He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison, of which 10 were suspended. He remains incarcerated in Maryland, according to state records.

In a press release issued on Wednesday
the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) cited allegations made by Ábrego García’s wife
that he abused her on several occasions in 2019 and 2020

The documents note that shortly after filing for the protective order in 2020
She had said that their son’s birthday was approaching and Ábrego García had agreed to counseling
In response to the revelations from the DHS, Ábrego García’s lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, told the Guardian that “the whole country has spent the last month talking about Kilmar Ábrego García
and speaking for or against Kilmar Ábrego García” and that “the one person who hasn’t yet had the chance to speak is Kilmar Ábrego García”
“The government needs to bring him back and give him a full and fair trial
and he can respond in his own voice,” he said
Sandoval-Moshenberg also noted to Axios that the allegations were not related to the deportation
This move from the DHS comes on the heels of the administration resurfacing a separate protective order Ábrego García’s wife filed in 2021, also alleging domestic violence. In a statement
Sura said she filed the order “in case things escalated” but said that “things did not escalate”
“I decided not to follow through with the civil court process,” she said in April
That is not a justification for Ice’s action of abducting him and deporting him to a country where he was supposed to be protected from deportation.”
The Alliance for Immigrant Survivors argued in a letter last week that the White House had “weaponized” Sura’s decision to seek a temporary protection order in 2021 “in order to justify her husband’s illegal kidnapping and indefinite incarceration”
nothing in Kilmar Ábrego García’s history gives the government permission or an excuse to violate his right to due process or legitimize his illegal removal from the US,” the letter reads
The letter also said that the administration posted a court document online that exposed Sura’s family’s home address, forcing her and her children “into hiding”
“Attempts to traumatize and intimidate survivors
and turn their experiences into political theater
are unacceptable and damaging,” the letter adds

A federal judge on Wednesday again directed the Trump administration to provide information about its efforts so far
to comply with her order to retrieve Kilmar Abrego Garcia from an El Salvador prison
District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland temporarily halted her directive for information at the administration’s request last week
But with the seven-day pause expiring at 5 p.m.
she set May deadlines for officials to provide sworn testimony on anything they have done to return him to the U.S

This "Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves" event is scheduled to take place in New York's Times Square on Friday
Garcia is eager to prove his mettle once again and improve upon his 24-1 record

The first of the card's three major bouts saw Teofimo Lopez impress in a convincing victory over previously unbeaten contender Arnold Barboza
It was Lopez's third defense of the WBO junior welterweight title and after the fight he called for a bout against unified welterweight champion Jaron "Boots" Ennis
"I'm Dora the Explorer and I'm looking for 'Boots,'" Lopez said

Despite the less than stellar fashion of his victory
Haney nonetheless improves to 32-0 and sets himself up for a rematch against Ryan Garcia later this year if Garcia prevails over Rolly Romero in the main event
Into the final round and the fans in Times Square will certainly be grateful there's only three minutes left in what's been a sleep-inducing fight
Ramirez looked a step slow and never managed to connect a punch of consequence on Haney
who was content to slowly box his way to a decision
but it was far from the return he would have hoped for

Ramirez continues to be utterly incapable of cutting off the ring

one of few positive moments from him this fight
Ramirez opened up a bit more that round but it's still Haney landing the best shots
It's been a rather terrible fight through eight rounds with neither fighter willing to let his hands go

I can't help but draw a comparison to a young Manny Pacquiao

But he added nuance to his game once he teamed up with trainer Freddie Roach

That's why I see Garcia having early success in this fight

But Garcia should survive the early storm with a few clinches
repositioning the fight to the center of the ring and finding his range and distance with his jab
Garcia will unleash one of his signature left hooks and mix in a few other hook combinations with speed and explosive power to catch Romero clean
Romero has a puncher chance if he can catch Garcia before Garcia catches him
but Romero seems less and less confident in his chin as of late
and that's a recipe for disaster against someone with Garcia's speed

It has put together a puzzle without the picture-on-the-box kind of confidence -- daring and risky
but brilliant to watch when Lopez is in rhythm with his internal beat

His footwork can seem smooth at times and erratic at others

All that said, Barboza has the style to frustrate Lopez, just as Jamaine Ortiz did in February 2024
Barboza would be wise to force Lopez to lead
because Lopez's lack of a consistent jab often leaves him guessing when to time his opponent with a counter
That's risky against a disciplined technician like Barboza
who will look to draw mistakes and capitalize
Barboza's sharp reads and ability to change rhythm midround could create openings
especially if he can turn Lopez and expose his occasionally poor footwork
His lack of head movement in exchanges will leave him vulnerable to Lopez's explosive counters
If Barboza stands in front of Lopez in a high guard too long
Lopez will find ways to break through or punch around it
Straight shots to the body can open up the offense for Lopez
especially if Barboza shells up without angles or moves back in a straight line
Lopez's creativity and experience navigating high guards and punching through defenses could be a significant factor
This fight will be defined by small moments
subtle shifts in timing and tactical adjustments
manage distance and pick his spots aggressively
but he can't fall into a rhythm Lopez can read
pick his counters wisely and punch with Barboza -- and after him -- to take advantage of his stationary guards and slower release of combinations as he finishes with a hook
who has never faced anyone quite like Lopez
His long professional journey has prepared him mentally
but he must now prove he can match the physical and tactical brilliance of a generational talent such as Lopez
If a focused Lopez shows up on fight night
we're in for a chess match played with fire
This isn't just another title defense for Lopez
his talent and experience could make all the difference
I see a knockout opportunity or a unanimous decision for Lopez

Noem repeated White House assertions about Ábrego García, a Salvadorian man who the Trump administration has admitted was mistakenly deported from Maryland last month, in a new interview with CBS
“[Ábrego García] is not under our control. He is an El Salvador citizen
If he were to be brought back to the United States of America
we would immediately deport him again,” Noem said of the 29-year-old who entered the US illegally around 2011 after fleeing gang violence
Since Ábrego García’s deportation, the Trump administration has refused to bring him back to the US – despite the supreme court unanimously ordering it to “facilitate” his release
Trump officials claim that US courts lack jurisdiction over the matter because Ábrego García is a Salvadorian national and no longer in the US
Noem asserted the Trump administration’s claims to CBS
saying: “President Trump and his administration has adhered to the court and respects the court and its decision,” adding
“This individual is not under the United States of America’s jurisdiction and he is not one of our citizens
And that’s up to that country to decide what to do.”
Last week, a federal judge accused the White House of “bad faith” in the case
arguing that “defendants have sought refuge behind vague and unsubstantiated assertions of privilege
using them as a shield to obstruct discovery and evade compliance with this court’s orders”
Noem maintains that the Trump administration spends “hours and hours” building cases against alleged gang members
Upon being asked about the administration’s claims against individuals who have been deported without due process
the homeland security secretary said: “Obviously
we’re relying on the expertise of our investigators
making sure that we have done everything absolutely correctly.”
Noem also accused federal judges who have issued court orders the Trump administration dislikes as “activist judges”
“I’m sure that these judges will continue to challenge every single thing that this administration does. We have several activist judges across the country,” she said, despite some of the judges who have ruled against Trump’s immigration policies being nominated by Republicans
Earlier this month, J Harvie Wilkinson, a Ronald Reagan-appointee and conservative appellate judge, called the Trump administration’s claims in Ábrego García’s case “shocking”, saying: “This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear.”

Rolly Romero won a unanimous decision over Ryan Garcia in the main event of a massively underwhelming card with Big Apple-sized hype
Romero scored a huge knockdown in the second round that left Garcia on the seat of his pants in the corner
but his level of aggression dipped dramatically as the fight went on
Garcia did solid work with his jab through the middle rounds
but I don’t find major fault in Romero winning the decision
Garcia did out-land Romero in total punches and jabs
Romero made an impression with judges and the Ring’s Mike Coppinger with his aggression
Garcia didn’t have that and he seemed resigned to accept the defeat
Garcia politely applauded his opponent’s performance and offered no excuses
This loss puts him and Turki Alalshikh in a tough position
This fight was supposed to set up the rematch with Devin Haney
who won his less-than-thrilling scrap with Jose Ramirez
but now with Garcia’s loss there may be some questions
Devin’s dad trolled Garcia from a nearby seat
Here is a look at the breakdown for the rest of the card
it looked as if he was in the 13th round against Garcia
Haney seemed to find his legs and made the fight look a bit more like the scrap we expected
Ramirez proved to be too slow and unable to take advantage of Haney’s erratic behavior
defensive prowess and the occasional counter combination proved to be a winning combination in a fight that wasn’t very interesting
I found myself more waiting for this one to be over than looking into the “action.” Haney will need to produce a better performance if he hopes to have a chance to win against Garcia
Lopez looked like a fighter in a completely different class
I scored the fight 11 rounds to one with a possibility for a complete shutout
Lopez was the quicker fighter with better footwork and more impacting punches
The most entertaining round of the fight was the 12th
but even that one lacked overall excitement and drama
Barboza looked to be afraid to engage after the first few rounds when it was apparent he was out of his depth
which could lead to him signing with Matchroom or moving forward as an independent
and he looked a bit disappointing in this opportunity
He will need to rebound with a better performance to establish himself as a legit contender at 140 pounds
he did get a bit of a tougher battle than most expected from Whittington
Despite being at an obvious skill disadvantage
he showed Windy City toughness battling through six rounds and even earning the judges’ nod in two of the six frames
Tsutsumi has some next-level snap on his punches and an undeniable presence
they will wind up working their way to fighting each other
Garcia and Haney are set to rematch later in the year
providing he wins will be in a position to face the man who emerges victorious from that furious rivalry
Garcia’s return is one of the biggest stories in boxing
After having his unanimous decision win over Haney flipped to a no contest following a failed drug test
That suspension lifted last month and he is ready to go
Garcia told me he was bit uncomfortable fighting outside
but he was prepared to make a statement on Friday night against Romero
Haney hasn’t fought since the no contest against Garcia
Ramirez represents a decent challenge for Haney
but it is one the latter is expected to come out victorious
It’s a crazy fight weekend as Canelo Alvarez is set to fight for unification in the super middleweight division against William Scull
That fight has serious implications as it could potentially impact Canelo’s megafight with Terence Crawford planned for September
and WBC super bantamweight title against Ramon Cardenas

Administration in touch with Nayib Bukele over detention of wrongly deported man
The Trump administration has been in touch directly with the Salvadorian president Nayib Bukele in recent days about the detention of Kilmar Ábrego García, the man wrongly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador
according to two people familiar with the matter
The nature of the discussion and its purpose was not clear because multiple Trump officials have said the administration was not interested in his coming back to the US despite the US supreme court ordering it to “facilitate” Ábrego García’s release
The contacts produced no new developments after Bukele rejected the outreach, the people said. The supreme court had ordered the administration to return Ábrego García to the US so that he would face immigration proceedings as he would have, had he not been sent to El Salvador.

Ábrego García has since been moved out of Cecot

The recalcitrance from the US administration to comply has been on display for weeks as senior Trump advisers have become increasingly determined to use it as a case to test the extent of presidential power and its boast that the courts have no practical way to ensure quick compliance with orders
At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said he would “never tell” if he had been in touch with Bukele. CNN earlier reported Rubio has had discussions with Bukele directly. The New York Times reported there had been a diplomatic note sent to Bukele

adding it was “because the conduct of our foreign policy belongs to the president to the united states and the executive branch
And in an interview with ABC News that aired the night before, the US president himself said he “could” tell El Salvador to return Ábrego García.
When it was raised to him that he had the ability to call Bukele and say “send him back right now”, Trump deflected responsibility. “I’m not the one making this decision. We have lawyers that don’t want to do this,” he said.
