The Red and Whites haven’t lifted a Liga MX trophy since the Clausura 2017 tournament
América Femenil is heading to the Liga MX Femenil final after a dominant 2-0 win over rivals Chivas Femenil in the second leg of their Clausura 2025 semifinal
Las Águilas sealed their place in the championship match — once again eliminating Chivas from the playoffs
The highly anticipated second leg of the América – Guadalajara rivalry took place on Sunday at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes
América only needed a draw to advance thanks to their first-place finish in the regular season
But they didn’t settle — they went out and took the match
applying high pressure and dominating possession early on
Chivas’ defense managed to hold off several attacks
the breakthrough came. Kiana Palacios opened the scoring with a brilliant chest control and finish in stoppage time of the first half
Shortly after the second half began, Montse Saldívar doubled the lead by tapping in a perfectly placed cross
That goal crushed Chivas’ hopes and put América firmly in control
Guadalajara failed to create any real danger and never looked close to turning the game around
The semifinal series reminded fans why the América – Guadalajara rivalry is one of the fiercest in Mexican football
ended 2-2 with goals from Licha Cervantes (brace) for Chivas
and Saldívar and Nancy Antonio for América
With away goals not counting in Liga MX Femenil playoffs
the tie-breaker came down to league position — a rule that favored América after finishing as the top team in the regular season with the best offense (60 goals)
despite boasting the best defense during the season (only 10 goals conceded)
América Femenil becomes the first team to reach the Clausura 2025 final
They’ll now wait to face the winner of the other semifinal between Pachuca and Monterrey
This marks a return to the final for América after falling short in the Apertura 2024
the team has built a balanced and high-intensity style that could very well lead them to another league title
First leg: Chivas 2-2 América (Estadio Akron)
Second leg: América 2-0 Chivas (Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes)
With another statement win over Chivas, Club América Femenil proves they’re still a powerhouse
and now just one step away from lifting the Clausura 2025 trophy

and even bicycle has the potential to become a food stand – a restaurant just waiting to happen
But what truly sets our city’s gastronomy apart is its contradictions
we’re not afraid to push boundaries and bring them to unexpected places
Case in point: “birriamen” – a mashup of the very local dish birria with Japanese import ramen
The popular gastronomy of Jalisco is the result of centuries of blending and evolution
with roots in both Indigenous and colonial cuisine
chroniclers from the time of the conquest documented Mexico’s food and culinary customs
street food has been a tradition since at least the 16th century
when local vendors first started selling in markets and on the streets
bringing with them the necessity of providing food for travelers
cenadurías (literally “places to have dinner”) marked a turning point
offering locals a new way to gather and enjoy a meal
where women sold dinner outside their homes with a few seats and tables
became a staple of local culture – a tradition that has endured to this day
Places like Cenaduría Doña Guille continue to serve antojitos such as pozole
perhaps without realizing that they paved the way for an entire universe of possibilities
Guadalajara’s is a clear result of mestizaje – a mix of cultures
and foods that shaped new traditions and identities
We’ve preserved local ingredients – like corn
and vegetables – but also embraced what the colonizers brought
but we’re also very curious about what others bring to the table
we’ll always add our own twist until no one knows where it came from
And this phenomenon isn’t just about international influences – it also happens within our own state
Out of the total inhabitants of the state of Jalisco
more than 50 percent live here in the capital city
Decades of internal migration from smaller cities and rural areas have brought diverse recipes from all over the state (along with plenty of nostalgia)
we’ve convinced ourselves they belong to us
Most of the dishes you eat here can also be found up north and down south
although you’ll always meet someone who swears their great-grand-aunt invented them – and why not believe them
food is always at the center of lives and celebrations in Guadalajara
If you want to see all of this come together
you’ve got to visit a market – little pieces of resistance that remind us of what the landscapes surrounding us have to offer
even though we can no longer see them in the buzz of the day
The first thing that will greet you at the Santa Tere market is probably the baskets of bread sold on the outside
This is actually a fundamental element of our cuisine: the birote salado
whose origins are debated but consistently traced back to a clear French influence
stands out from others in Mexico due to its slightly sour flavor
it serves as a key ingredient in some of Guadalajara’s most iconic dishes
a type of sandwich with three essential ingredients: freshly baked birote
and two different tomato sauces – one mild and the other very spicy
you can taste this delicacy in establishments often named after their founders or their nicknames
this sandwich is filled with pork leg boiled and seasoned only with salt
It is then completely submerged in the tomato-based sauce
Eating it requires some skill – and plenty of napkins
another iconic late breakfast or early meal is birria
No two versions are the same – every cook has their own secret mix of ingredients to keep the flavors balanced
Typically accompanied by handmade tortillas
We love it so much that there’s even a whole neighborhood dedicated to it: Las Nueve Esquinas
served daily or nightly in food stalls where everyone comes together as one
and human solidarity takes the form of warning others whether the salsa is spicy or not; beverages like jugo de lima
and tequila; and even desserts like jericalla and capirotada
it’s just as important to recognize Guadalajara as the modern
and densely populated city it is today – one whose culinary scene has captured international attention
exciting initiatives for modern Mexican cuisine began to emerge in pioneering spaces like Alcalde
a specialty coffee scene started to take shape
led by spots like Palreal and its Café Estelar
Traditional neighborhoods like La Americana – filled with old mansions ready for restoration – took a creative turn
You can find a new place or concept every time you visit the area
the names of chefs like Xrysw Ruelas and Óscar Segundo from the renowned corn-based kitchen Xokol; Fabián Delgado
offering modern takes on Spanish cuisine at Navaja; Freddy Monteros
taking Pacific seafood to a whole new level at Erizo de Mar; and Carlos Espinoza
always impressing with his take on Mexican cuisine at Tikuun and Zorra Bistró
But it’s not just high-end restaurants making an impact
You’ll also find vibrant culinary corridors in neighborhoods like Chapalita
and concept restaurants coexist – sometimes harmoniously
And that’s who we are: sometimes confusing
New School – We’ve already talked about the neighborhood Las Nueve Esquinas
known for being entirely dedicated to serving birria
While all the restaurants there offer great takes on the dish
a local favorite is actually located outside the area: Birriería El Chololo
and top it off with beans to make yourself a taco with freshly made tortillas
If you’re looking to explore a modern approach to Mexican cuisine in a fine dining setting
where award-winning chefs take you on an unexpected journey through native maíz criollo
Watering Hole – Cantinas are always a solid choice
be sure to try the famous “yerbabuena” – a mix of vodka
If you’re after something more modern
a great two-in-one experience is El Habanero Negro
where you’ll find delicious food and a unique drink called “chejuino” – a blend of beer and the local fermented corn beverage known as tejuino
Gallo Altanero offers a unique selection of drinks created with agave spirits
To Market – When it comes to eating at markets
Mercado Libertad and Santa Tere probably come to mind first
Mercado Libertad is the largest indoor market in Latin America and has an entire floor dedicated to food – everything from birria and tortas to ramen
but don’t miss Fonda Mariquita and their amazing quesadillas fritas
you can also try your luck at Mercado de Abastos
Dish to Try – While trying a torta ahogada is a must
you should also give an opportunity to its first cousin
it is entirely different in flavor and preparation
Lonches bañados use pan fleiman instead of birote salado
and chipotle – typically filled with pork leg
or panela – and topped with a mustard-cream mix
Here’s how to experience both. From Guadalajara to Amatitán
Jalisco’s tequila producers don’t just make great spirits—they preserve its rich cultural heritage
Tequila is the fastest growing spirits category in the United States, and a truly artisanal agricultural spirit with a unique Mexican terroir and a culture all its own. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States' (DISCUS) 2025 Annual Economic Briefing
sales of the popular agave-based spirit grew by 2 percent from 2023 to 2024
leaving the rest of the bottles in the dust
Yet few of us know how tequila is produced and the rich heritage behind it
where tequila is made (and mariachi-style music was born)
provides an excellent peek into the centuries of tradition behind the process
Although tequila’s official denomination of origin commenced in 1974
Jalisco records hundreds of years of production

This distinct profile starts in the agave fields

The timing for cutting each agave piña directly impacts the end result. Steffin Oghene, a vice president at El Tequileño
explains that “if you taste a green banana [versus] a banana with black spots
one is very green and fresh in flavor and lacks complexity
The banana with black spots represents mature agave
You need mature agave not only for its natural sugar content
but more for the complex flavor profile that it will provide to artisanal tequila.”

Tomas “The Air Machete” Machac beat David “The Wall” Goffin in the final of UTS Guadalajara
The Czech capped off a brilliant UTS debut, beating Goffin for the second time in three days to maintain his undefeated record in Guadalajara
“It couldn’t be better,” Machac declared after the final
I managed to play my best tennis here and the final was great
By winning the event, Machac becomes the first player to win a UTS tournament on debut since Jack Draper won the UTS Grand Final in 2023
He also books his own place in the 2025 UTS Grand Final
Machac won his earlier meeting against Goffin on Friday 3-0
the veteran has been playing at a much higher level
winning eight points in a row from 5-5 in the first quarter
successfully playing his card to snap Machac’s momentum and close the gap to 13-10
but the quarter-point still came at 16-12 in Machac’s favour
Goffin pulled back three of these before falling 17-15 to go down 1-0 after one quarter
“It would be better maybe to take the lead earlier
than to try and steal it,” the 34-year-old reflected between quarters
winning a fantastic dive-roll volley on the sixth point
This brilliance was a foreshadowing of what would take place later in the quarter
with the 24-year-old turning the tables and stealing the second 16-14
The writing looked to be on the wall when Machac pulled ahead early in the third
but Goffin showed his trademark fighting spirit to claw his way back into the quarter at 9-9
with Machac producing another magical volley on Goffin’s card before winning his own to go ahead 18-10
The Czech sealed his maiden UTS title in style
Earlier in the day, Goffin beat Casper “The Ice Man” Ruud in the semi-finals of UTS Guadalajara
The victory was Goffin’s second sudden death win in a row
having scraped his way into the Final Four with a come-from-behind victory over Flavio Cobolli yesterday
another sudden death,” Goffin said after the match
otherwise he’s too good here in these conditions
Good nerves that make you feel brave to go
both players were full of errors to begin the match
Norway’s Ruud – the most experienced UTS player at the event – was the first to rein in his game
winning his 10th consecutive quarter to get on the board first
I began to hit better,” Ruud explained of his strong performance in the third
winning the fourth and forcing sudden death
After The Ice Man won the opening point of sudden death
winning two in a row to book his place in the final of UTS Guadalajara
Machac booked his place in the final courtesy of a 18-13
17-9 victory over Adrian “Manna” Mannarino in the semi-finals of UTS Guadalajara on Sunday
will face Belgian David Goffin in the final on Sunday afternoon and remains undefeated across the tournament
much better than yesterday,” said Machac said after the match
“I was a little bit more used to the service
I finally felt a little bit of something on the court.”
It was a tight start to the match with neither player able to build a significant lead over the opening half of the first quarter
Just when Machac managed to get his nose in front
Mannarino played his card to draw level again at 11-11
winning his own card and racing out to 17-12 by the time quarter point rolled around and claiming it on his second attempt
“I try to always take advantage of the bonus cards because we don’t have them on the ATP Tour,” said Machac between quarters after winning his ninth card from 12 attempts
The second quarter featured quite possibly the rally of the tournament
with a 30-shot war unfolding on Machac’s card.
but the Czech managed to win two quick points in the aftermath
forcing a deciding point to end the quarter
Machac’s momentum saw him over the line once again
The first two quarters clearly took their toll on the 36-year-old Frenchman
with Manna falling behind 8-0 early in the third
While he pegged the gap back to 16-9 by quarter point

Guadalajara is a richly traditional city wrapped in a modern metropolis
Here’s all you need to know before you set out
I have known Guadalajara my whole life
traveling here to visit extended family since the year I was born
When I began visiting with my American friends
I started to see Guadalajara through different eyes and appreciate its depth and complexity
It’s a richly colonial city wrapped in a modern metropolis
A place steeped in tradition yet standing for inclusion
A city where a night out could include world-class cuisine or bacon-wrapped hot dogs
a symphony concert or a raucous lucha libre (wrestling) match
past and present (chili-covered lollipops included)
Here are twenty travel tips to stay safe and make the most of your trip to Guadalajara
Sure, you can see Guadalajara’s highlights in a couple of days – most are concentrated in the historic center – but a longer trip gives you time to check out the city’s colonial-to-hipster neighborhoods
wander through dazzling art museums and outdoor markets
take in some live music and maybe even find your favorite late-night taco stand
Guadalajara is one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations
and its blend of cultural and culinary experiences rivals that of major destinations like Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta
Check out the tourism office’s cartelera
before you head to town to round out your itinerary and savor everything this vibrant city has to offer
Guadalajara is generally safe for tourists, particularly in its central areas. The best neighborhoods in Guadalajara for visitors are also some of the safest
Colonia America has hip cafes and boutique hotels that attract many visitors
While violent crime is rare in these parts
especially in crowded places like markets and public transport.
and avoid fringe neighborhoods such as Colonia Jalisco and Santa Fe
such as being aware of your surroundings and securing your valuables.
Guadalajara is known for its pleasant daytime temperatures, hovering in the 70s and 80s year-round
bring warm clothing and a jacket for the sometimes frigid air
Add an umbrella to your summer packing list
when afternoon showers are a daily occurrence
Sundays are for vibrant local culture in Guadalajara: plazas bustle with street vendors and performers
major streets close to cars to make room for walkers and bikers (free bikes are available at Parque Revolución)
and the city’s largest open-air crafts market fills the streets of Tonalá
a traditional Mexican rodeo where skilled riders showcase their horsemanship through events like bull riding and roping
often accompanied by lively music and a festive atmosphere
don’t miss a lucha libre (wrestling) match for an unforgettable evening
The cheapest ride to and from Guadalajara’s international airport is by city bus
It can get crowded and makes frequent stops
Look for the bus stop in front of the Hotel Casa Grande
and catch either a “Ruta 176” or “Atasa” bus
Both run to the center of town in about 45 minutes
with frequencies every 15 minutes morning until night
Be in the know and use tapatío to refer to someone or something from Guadalajara
the language spoken by the region’s original inhabitants
Tapatíos (and Mexicans in general) value pleasantries
Before any interaction – even just entering a shop or restaurant – say “buenos días” (good morning)
“buenas tardes” (good afternoon) or “buenas noches” (good evening)
“gracias” (thank you) or “con permiso” (excuse me) is customary
Even if that’s the extent of your Spanish conversation
Despite its history and reputation as a deeply Catholic city
Guadalajara is also one of the most accepting and inclusive places in Mexico for LGBTIQ+ people
queer-owned businesses and cultural events
wearing shorts or flip-flops will mark you as a tourist in Guadalajara
adults just don’t wear such casual pieces outside their homes
Stick to pants or skirts and wear leather sandals or closed-toe shoes instead
Public transportation in Guadalajara, including buses and the metro system, is widely used by locals and visitors alike, making it a great option for those exploring Guadalajara on a budget
crowded buses and metro cars can be hotspots for pickpocketing
Use a reliable app like Moovit to navigate routes
Don’t be shy: if you’re on a bus without a functioning bell pull (it happens)
yell out “bajan!”(BA-hahn; it means “getting off”)
This will signal the driver to stop at the nearest intersection
Guadalajara’s early morning street food fave (and sworn-by hangover cure) is the torta ahogada (literally “drowned sandwich”)
a baguette-like roll stuffed with slow-roasted pork and drenched in hot sauce
While you’ll be tempted to eat this huge creation with a fork and knife
tapatíos use their hands – so do like locals do and lean over your plate
Go the extra mile and tuck a few napkins into your shirt front
a creamy custard dessert native to Guadalajara
You can find them at traditional markets like Mercado Libertad
a refreshing fermented corn drink served with lime and salt – a local favorite
or the merchant might throw in a knick-knack
But before you dig in your heels over a few pesos
remember they likely mean a lot more to the vendor than they do to you
Antiquated plumbing in Guadalajara means that flushing toilet paper can often clog the system
If you see an open wastebasket in a stall or hotel bathroom
While Guadalajara’s tap water is purified at the source
it can become contaminated as it travels through aging water lines
So don’t drink it or even use it to brush your teeth; stick to bottled water
there’s no need to worry about ice in restaurants or bars – here
it’s purchased from commercial ice factories
Though taxis are easy to hail in the city center
refusing to use their meters and quoting inflated flat rates
which provides reliable service at cheaper rates
be sure you agree on the price before you get in
try bargaining or just wait for another taxi
pickpocketing is a risk on crowded buses and subway trains
Mercado San Juan de Dios (also officially called Mercado Libertad) and the post-clubbing scene on Avenida Chapultepec are notorious for petty theft
remembering that pickpockets often work in teams
at home and stow your valuables in the hotel safe
If you’re a victim of crime, need medical assistance or legal help, contact your consulate or embassy. Almost 50 countries, including the US and Canada, have representatives in Guadalajara who can help you navigate the system or recommend care options.
Editor’s Note: To properly introduce Guadalajara
Culinary Backstreets’s newest location
the local guide who helped design our culinary walk there
Born and raised in Los Angeles
where she studied pastry and breadmaking at Le Cordon Bleu
Eliza first came to Mexico to work at a boutique hotel on the Pacific coast of Jalisco state in 2005 and has been living in the country since
She moved to Guadalajara in 2006 after meeting her husband
Eliza works as a language coach and also runs a lending library that she opened in 2015
What do you think makes Guadalajara such an exciting culinary capital
There’s something about eating out here in Guadalajara that makes you feel like you’re not in a restaurant but actually in someone’s home
There’s the ciudad – the city – and there’s the pueblo – the village
but it really feels like the biggest pueblo you’ve ever been to
You can especially feel that when it comes to eating here
it’s so easy to find so many places that are fourth-generation family places
which is unlike some other cities in Mexico
Guadalajara doesn’t feel like it has a lot of tourists
It’s a city that’s still able to hold on to its secrets and rewards those who explore it with its hidden gems
What’s the story you hope to tell with the walking tour you developed
I’m really fascinated with the idea of Guadalajara as a frontier town
a gateway city where all kinds of different and seemingly contradictory forces crash up against each other
My family and I recently took a road trip through the southwestern United States and while in Nevada
as we came upon Las Vegas and its strip gleaming in the desert from far away
it made me think of Guadalajara in certain ways
Vegas is this gateway to the west coast of the United States
but is the gateway to the Pacific coast of Jalisco and on the border between different regions
If you were to describe a thread that runs through all of the city’s cooking
and Mexican cowboy and mariachi culture is very strong around here
There are a lot of ranches and livestock in the surrounding region and that culture and money flows into Guadalajara
and that ends up being reflected in what is cooked
But Guadalajara is also a wet place – it can be very humid
there are rivers around it and there’s a very strong rainy season – and that somehow gets reflected in what we eat here
We like our tortas ahogadas “drowned” in salsa
We like our meat cooked en su jugo – in its own juices
This is a town that likes to eat things with a spoon
I’ve even seen people eat their tortas ahogadas by opening a hole in the corner of the plastic bag they are served in to slurp out the sauce and then basically drink their soggy sandwich
You have just returned to Guadalajara from a long trip away: What’s the first place in the city that you dream about going
a family-run place that now has a few locations around town
but for the kind of thing that’s hard to find anywhere else

China continued its diving dynasty with four golds
while Mexico won three historic silver medals in front of the home crowd at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup 2025 in Guadalajara
The energy was electric in Guadalajara as the women’s 3m springboard synchronised final kicked off day 3 of the World Aquatics Diving World Cup 2025 in Guadalajara.
With identical degrees of difficulty in the first two rounds, the competition was incredibly tight. By rounds three and four, China had taken the lead, while Australia and Mexico battled back and forth for second place, with Team Great Britain close behind in fourth.
As the fifth and final round unfolded, all eyes were on the scoreboard. China held their lead and secured the gold, but Team Mexico delivered another brilliant dive to claim the silver. Australia locked in the bronze, while Great Britain finished just behind in fourth.

David Heredero, Guadalajara Plant Director for Electrolyzers at AcceleraTM by Cummins shares his thoughts:
David Heredero: My team is working on defining the best approach to building electrolyzers in our plant in Guadalajara
David Heredero: I love the great opportunity to contribute to shaping this new industry and to do it together with people who bring unique backgrounds and from whom it is great to learn
excitement and determination to make great things happen have been valuable lessons from my team
ready to overcome difficulties and changes
Q: What impact do you hope this work will have
David Heredero: We will play a key role in the energy transition
The more electrolyzers we produce from our plant in Guadalajara
the more we will help decarbonize the economy
Accelera, the zero-emissions business segment of Cummins Inc., opened its new electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, in October 2024
Spanning 24,000 square meters (~260,000 square feet), the facility marks a €50 million investment and is one of the world’s largest dedicated to electrolyzer production. With an initial production capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers annually
the plant is designed to scale beyond 1 gigawatt (GW) as demand grows
The facility currently employs around 150 highly skilled workers
with the potential to reach 200 as operations ramp up
In line with Accelera’s commitment to sustainability, the facility integrates 3,000 rooftop solar panels, a geothermal heating and cooling system, and rainwater harvesting, enabling up to 70% of its energy needs to be met on-site. This plant plays an important role in advancing Europe’s green hydrogen production

We love that there’s always something new to discover in the Columbus dining scene – even if it’s just new to us. Thanks to Andy, Bethia, and Erin of the Columbus Foodletter (which you should absolutely subscribe to)
we were finally nudged to visit Taqueria Guadalajara
a very-easy-to-love Mexican eatery on the northeast side just off Cleveland Avenue
We’ve probably been driving by it for years
but we’re glad we finally made our way in
In the space of one week we’ve visited two times
and we think this may be one of our favorite go-tos for Mexican food
you’ll see a counter with digital menus prominently displayed above it
They list their featured dishes with great color photos; dishes will sometimes cycle through
but it’s pretty easy to get a grasp of the menu
they’ll assign you a table number in one of the two rooms
you can find your seat and your meal will come out quickly
We’ve managed to try a half dozen dishes over our two visits
I can highly recommend the torta de birria
The chimichangas have been a big hit as well
Even the sides of refried beans and rice at Guadalajara are wonderfully seasoned
At too many restaurants these are a complete throwaway
but they’d make a wonderful meal all on their own
And on the recommendation of the Columbus Foodletter crew
we’ve come to love the asada plate as well
The meat is perfectly seasoned and grilled
The folks at Taqueria Guadalajara are friendly
It’s definitely in the permanent rotation
Taqueria Guadalajara is open daily from 10:30 a.m
(except Sundays when they open at 11 a.m.)

What is the best restaurant in Guadalajara
That’s a tough one – it depends on what you’re craving

Guadalajara is one of the best food cities in all of Mexico. If you were to tell me that I’m going to Guadalajara right now, the first thing I’d do is go for breakfast at a taquería that I discovered when I went to shoot the photos for the book Guía Domingo
It’s a street cart called Tacos al Vapor Don Fede
You can tell that it has its lifelong customers – some go there for breakfast before work; there is nothing more Mexican than eating a taco while standing in the middle of the street
When I visited it was springtime and there were many jacaranda trees painting the street purple
The star here is the requesón taco (a fresh
I would order three requesón tacos and one potato or bean taco
accompanied by cabbage and carrots on the side to add some textures to the dish
Don Fede himself attends you with a contagious smile on his face and is very chatty
The preparation is very traditional: the tacos are made using double tortillas (so they don’t break) which are soaked in oil
Fede buys the cheese in a traditional creamery and cooks it with poblano pepper strips and tomato
During the short while I was at the taquería
I realized that the main thing that the Tapatíos (Guadalajara locals) order is the taco de requesón that I love so much
but there are other guisos (stewlike fillings for tacos)
(I still have more to try.) When I first tried the requesón taco
I couldn’t help but eat more than one because they are really unique; I had never tasted anything like it before
Keep in mind that when I go to take photos for Guía Domingo
I go to 8-10 taquerías a day and try to eat very little (one or two bites in each place) so that I can try everything
but on this occasion I ate about three delicious requesón tacos
there is a bakery in front of the market called Pastelería Santa Teresita where there is always a long line
but it is worth it to wait and ask for cookies or pan de elote (sweet Mexican cornbread) to take away

A new honor developed specifically as an outreach to illustrators
is going to be introduced this week at Guadalajara
alongside the traveling exhibition and in addition to a return to the Mexican fair’s “Illustrators Survival Corner” from the Italian fair—and with the “Survival Corner” a group of guest illustrators including Isidro Ferrer
Pasoli, speaking to Publishing Perspectives, says that the new Bologna Portfolio Award “is an entirely new initiative that I came up with together with our friends at Mimaster[in Milan] for Guadalajara
but I’d also like to organize it at Bologna
“It means a lot to me,” Pasoli says
“because I believe that Bologna’s role is also to help illustrators establish a more effective and direct relationship with the market—a relationship that starts with their portfolio
that’s how young illustrators manage to communicate their quality and distinctive features.”
Pointing out that the new award is a signal of Bologna’s interest in fostering the growth of illustration
the way that a kind of fair-to-fair momentum has begun to energize Bologna’s own 60+ years of development
If there’s such a concept as one book fair or trade show “mentoring” another
Bologna is being led by Pasoli in that interesting direction
she works with Guadalajara’s director Schulz
In Shanghai, the director-to-director contact is between Pasoli and the Chinese fair’s director, Donna Chai, with cooperative input from Bologna Book Plus’ Thomas and Orna O’Brien
Perusing books on the floor of the Guadalajara International Book Fair’s opening day
the choice of Guadalajara for the inauguration of the new Bologna Portfolio Award is partly a purposeful signal from the Italian fair of its support for young and emerging illustrators in Central and South America
Organizers of the award say that the region for some time now “has been demonstrating its creative and development potential on the international publishing scene
Its illustrators have been earning numerous accolades and prizes at Bologna and the world’s main illustration events.”

Electricity was in the air on Friday night in Guadalajara
as UTS made its first appearance in Latin America and a party-like atmosphere was coursing through the 7,500-capacity Centro Panamericano de Tenis
and the packed house soaked in the magic of “tennis like you’ve never seen it before.”
Flavio Cobolli – “Il Gladiatore” – and Jakub Mensik – “Menimal” got the ball rolling in a milestone occasion for the event
It was the 100th match in the history of UTS
which dates back to its inaugural event in the South of France in July of 2020.
enjoy a rundown of all four of Friday’s matches
as well as a preview of what’s to come on Saturday…
Cobolli – “Il Gladiatore” – was behind in the first two sets
but he lived up to his name and fought back to take control in the first two quarters
before running away with the third quarter and completing the 36th three-set sweep in UTS history.
and I also love that it’s the 100th match in UTS – it’s a good number,” Cobolli said.
who threw in an underarm serve and won his three-point card in a last-ditch attempt to get back into the final quarter
but in this match of UTS debutants it was Cobolli who looked like the player with title aspirations
Everything from his laser forehand to his post-match dancing were on point tonight.
A combined 1,033 ATP victories have been logged by Richard Gasquet and Fabio Fognini
the pair of tour legends gave UTS fans a big treat as they took their talents to a different stage.
The pair of former top 10 talents had not met since 2018 on the ATP Tour
the second of four round-robin matches played on night one
it was Fognini who found a way to victory despite a valiant effort from Gasquet
The pair traded blows and wore one another out
and Fognini was only able to avoid sudden death by winning a deciding point at the end of the fourth quarter.
He ripped a courageous backhand winner to take out former finalist Gasquet and earn his first career UTS win.
Tomas Machac – “The Air Machete” – may not have had the experience on his side but he had the power to break through “The Wall” on Friday night in Guadalajara
It was a powerful debut performance from the 23-year-old Czech who controlled the run of play from start to finish to become the second debutant – along with Flavio Cobolli – to earn a win on Friday night in Guadalajara.

The former world No.7 will go back to the drawing board on Saturday in Guadalajara against Jakub Mensik.
As Casper Ruud made his way through a packed throng of admirers on his way to Stadium court to face Adrian Mannarino on Friday night the full vibe of UTS Guadalajara could be felt
where Ruud and Mannarino posed for their pre-match picture and coinflip
Just the atmosphere that UTS expected when it chose Guadalajara
a tennis-mad city that is underserved by the ATP Tour
as the home for its first event of 2025.
The frenzied scene is an indication of how much Mexicans and Latin Americans love the sport — and UTS
The Norwegian used that energy and attacked the match from the front foot from start to finish as he put in a dominant performance against the French debutant.
effectively a deer in the headlights in the opening quarter
pushed back in the second quarter and nearly stole it
From that moment on there was nothing but wind in Ruud’s sails as he charted his course to victory in straight quarters
There will be eight exciting tilts on Saturday
And it’s all still up for grabs as far as the coveted Zeus trophy is concerned.
