ShareSaveListsSections Of Nearly Half Of Mexican States Considered Risky For American Travelers By The U.S. GovernmentByDolia Estevez
The warning states that "crime and violence are serious problems and can occur anywhere… Gun battles have occurred in broad daylight on streets and in other public venues
citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area..
The location and timing of future armed engagements is unpredictable." Therefore
it recommends Americans defer non-essential travel to the areas specifically identified in the warning and exercise extreme caution when traveling throughout the other areas for which advisories are in effect
One of the areas identified is the State of Mexico
President Enrique Peña Nieto's home state
where the advisory warns Americans not to travel to the municipalities of Coacalco
most of them part of Mexico City's greater metropolitan area
which with its spectacular museums and world class hotels and restaurants is a big tourist attraction
was not included in the warning that replaces one issued January 9
Mexico has 31 states and one federal district
In 14 of the states the advisory calls on Americans to defer travel unless it is essential and in five others it advises exercising caution
government advises Americans not to travel are: Coahuila
The second set in which it calls for caution are: Aguascalientes
In the remaining 13 federal entities--Baja California Sur
Yucatán and Mexico City—no advisory is in effect
the no-travel advisory does not apply to the entirety of the states listed

Titled "An Egalitarian Kidnapping Epidemic," the article says that the rich are no longer the only targets of kidnappings and that victims these days are often shopkeepers
the Human Rights Council estimated that 27,740 where kidnapped
but only 1,698 were reported to the authorities because police are often involved in the kidnappings and are not trusted
the Post said; 20% of kidnapping victims do not survive

The federal government has formally announced that it will build a passenger rail project to link three México state municipalities to the east of Mexico City
the 27.9-billion-peso (US $1.5-billion) project will connect Chalco
to the Santa Martha Metro station in the Mexico City borough of Iztapalapa
electrically-powered railroad will likely have seven stations including the two terminals and run via the municipalities of Valle de Chalco and Ixtapaluca
The project is similar to one announced by the former federal government that never got off the ground
It planned to extend line A of the Metro to Chalco from its southern terminus in La Paz
The project was forecast to cost 11.6 billion pesos but was never allocated the resources
The newspaper El Universal reported that the former government instead decided to build the Mexicable cable car system in the México state municipality of Ecatepec
The current government has already allocated resources in its 2021 budget to begin construction of the new project
A cost-benefit analysis conducted by a private firm was delivered to the government at the end of last year
The rail project would not only benefit residents of Chalco
Valle de Chalco and Ixtapaluca but also people living in other densely populated México state municipalities that are part of greater Mexico City’s southeastern sprawl
It is predicted that almost 138,000 passengers will use the rail service per day in its first year of operation and that demand will increase to just over 168,000 in 2025
The government has several other rail projects on its hands
It intends to complete the Mexico City-Toluca intercity railroad
which was left incomplete by the Peña Nieto administration
and extend the Mexico City suburban rail line to the new Santa Lucía airport that is currently under construction
In addition, the government is building the Maya Train in the country’s southeast and plans to upgrade the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec between Salina Cruz

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been present on the blog
I’ve had a great set of excursions into the edges of Mexico City
From semi-rural compounds in the hills of Tlalpan
to a hilltop site of traditional religious ceremonies in Ecatepec
to the former city dump Bordo de Xochiaca and the industrial suburb of Tlalnepantla
I’ve been lucky enough to be able to revisit parts of the city that I’ve been before
and to explore others that I previously didn’t know
What I’ve seen recently is a variety of self-built and government-sponsored neighborhoods
in varied terrains and imbued with distinct histories
As I’m coming into the last weeks of my work here
I’m feeling a bit of the pressure to make a set of views of the diversity of the city’s built form and ways of living fit into a singular model of suburban
and learn from residents of these different spaces
I hope to continue to hone in on the underlying patterns of expansion
But in the meantime, I want to simply share some of places I’ve seen. These are photographs of the greater Mexico City region as I’m seeing it, with a map to help locate them within the Valley of Mexico. To follow more closely, please follow me on my Instagram
and let me know your thoughts here in the comments

Mexican Guadalupe Bautista returns to the ring this weekend
with the vacant WBC female flyweight silver title on the line
in Ixtapaluca a professional card will take place
and it`ll be at the Valle Verde Subdelegation Auditorium
It was at the traditional weekly Martes a Café press conference held by the World Boxing Council
and which was attended by fighters who will be part of the card
are pledging one hundred and ten percent commitment plus effort
A man from México state was sentenced to 83 years in prison for the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in the municipality of Chimalhuacán
was found guilty of murder of the girl identified as Giselle who was reported missing on January 19 of this year
Her body was found in a vacant lot in the neighboring municipality of Ixtapaluca five days later
Police determined that the girl had gone to a cyber café in Chimalhuacán where Buendía invited her to enter his house
producing injuries that would ultimately lead to her death
he took her body to an area in Ixtapaluca called El Cerrito (The Little Hill)
The femicide provoked protests in a state with one of the highest rates of violence against women in the country
The state Attorney General’s Office said that its investigations clearly pointed to Buendía as the perpetrator of the crime
Buendía was also ordered to pay a fine of 1.55 million pesos (US $77,500)

The number of vehicles in 12 densely populated México state municipalities that form part of the greater Mexico City metropolitan area has increased on average by 600% since the year 2000
The surge in numbers far outpaces population growth
which show that the number of people living in the same 12 municipalities increased from 7.23 million in 2000 to 8.37 million in 2015
The municipalities where the 600% increase occurred are
Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) showed that in 2017 there were 4.6 million cars in those 12 Valley of Mexico municipalities
the most populous in the Mexico City/México state conurbation
Added to those in the 16 boroughs of Mexico City proper — where the number of vehicles has increased by a more moderate 100% from 2.5 million in 2000 to 5 million in 2017 — there are at least 9.6 million cars in the immense sprawl of the megalopolis
whose total population is estimated at around 21 million
It’s no wonder that the TomTom Traffic Index ranks the Mexican capital as the world’s most traffic congested city
one in which motorists can expect to spend an additional 227 hours a year — nine and a half full days — in traffic on top of their regular travel time
the municipality that recorded the biggest increase in vehicles was Ecatepec
where the number went from 147,000 in 2000 to just over one million in 2017
However, in Chimalhuacán — voted the worst city in Mexico in which to live in a recent survey — the number of cars multiplied by a factor of 17
located to the immediate east of Mexico City
the number climbed 11-fold from 70,000 at the start of the century to 776,000 in the most recent count
Ixtapaluca and Huixquilucan also recorded increases of above 1,000%
There are now more cars in the 12 crowded México state municipalities than in all of the state’s 113 other municipalities combined
Latin America director at the global nonprofit The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)
says the exponential increase in the number of vehicles in greater Mexico City is the result of federal and state government policies that have favored road building over investment in public transit infrastructure
Another factor has been the construction of large-scale residential developments in outlying metropolitan areas
“This motorization is the result of a development model from the last century
The use of cars has to be discouraged by promoting public transit and improving [infrastructure] for journeys on foot or by bicycle
Traffic congestion brings about high economic and health costs,” he said
