we moved to Arizona before eventually moving to Davis County
we lived in a pretty middle-class neighborhood with a lot of big families
I knew why my parents had come here to give their kids a better life than they had coming up—to give us more opportunities
I was exposed to the possibilities that people could achieve with a good education
My peers would talk about wanting to go to college
A lot of my friends had parents who were very successful people
I realized I needed to make something of myself
I need to succeed so my family can succeed
I took honors and advanced placement classes
as well as being involved in extracurricular activities
that hard work paid off and I was accepted to the U of U as a pre-nursing major
I realized that direct patient care wasn’t the way I wanted to help people

I knew she was an immediate must-read author for me
She seamlessly weaves romance with fiction to create love stories that thaw my cold heart
I knew I needed to pick it up ASAP—especially after seeing how split her fans were online
Some called it their new absolute favorite
Here’s my full review of Say You’ll Remember Me:
If you’ve found yourself panic-googling “cheap Mother’s Day gifts” at the eleventh hour
CVS has a lineup of under-$25 gifts that are thoughtful
and look way more expensive than they actually are
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Just for the Summer comes a playful yet deeply emotional romance where one date is all it takes for two people to know they’re perfect for each other… until one of them moves 2,000 miles away the next day
Say You’ll Remember Me follows Samantha and Xavier after they meet at Xavier’s veterinary office
strong-willed person on the other side of the exam table
and their instant connection leads to an incredible first date that lasts the entire night
Unfortunately, Samantha has a flight early the next morning to permanently move across the country. They both try to forget each other, knowing a long-distance relationship with a near-stranger isn’t exactly ideal
The biggest critique I’ve seen online was also my main issue while reading: the rampant use of TikTok language and references. Within the first few chapters, Xavier is compared to Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses
“core memories” are referenced multiple times
characters throw around “it’s giving…” and call people “pick mes.” At one point
Samantha even asks Xavier if he’d still love her if she were a worm
which you may recognize as a TikTok trend from literally five years ago
I usually enjoy pop culture references in books
but they need to be smart and actually serve a purpose
the TikTok vocabulary completely took me out of the narrative
but there’s a difference between using social media as a theme—critiquing or celebrating it—and just sprinkling in brainrot buzzwords to pander to readers on TikTok who are already buying your books
it almost felt like Abby Jimenez underestimated her audience’s intelligence
as if we could only connect with her writing if it were phrased in TikTok terms
I might’ve been able to look past the ultra-modern writing style if the romance had delivered, but unfortunately, I found the connection between Samantha and Xavier lacking. I’m not the biggest fan of the insta-love trope
but it’s not a dealbreaker if the relationship develops enough to justify that immediate spark
But because Samantha and Xavier are trying to make it work long distance
They kept referencing this incredible chemistry that made all the effort and suffering worth it
“The realities of caretaking and family trauma might not deliver the rom-com vibes promised by the pastel
but these parts of the story helped ground the book in reality.”
That said, I did find it incredibly refreshing to read a romance where the main obstacle isn’t something that could be resolved with one honest conversation. Sam and Xavier had valid reasons for not being able to just be together in person or pack up and move. We can’t all drop thousands of dollars on plane tickets to visit our crushes
and they both had real-life obligations that made relocating impossible
But because the long-distance struggle was introduced so early and never evolved
the entire middle of the book felt repetitive
We cycled through the same beats over and over: Samantha and Xavier wish they were together in person
they spiral over what the point of being together is if they’re never actually together
but they love each other too much to break up
Rinse and repeat—until everything magically works out at the end
For me, the book’s biggest strength was, hands down, the subplot about Samantha’s family dynamics
Some readers found the familial struggles too heavy
but I thought they were the only relationships that actually helped me understand who Samantha and Xavier are
We got to see how they support each other and Samantha’s family through hard times
which revealed way more than their internal monologues about how much long distance sucks
The realities of caretaking and family trauma might not deliver the rom-com vibes promised by the pastel
but these parts of the story helped ground the book in reality
Though if you’ve experienced difficult family relationships or been the caretaker of a loved one yourself
I would definitely recommend looking up content trigger warnings before diving in
I’d recommend plenty of other Abby Jimenez books before Say You’ll Remember Me
But if the premise sounds interesting to you
and you have a higher tolerance for secondhand cringe
so while I won’t be texting all my friends to run to the library ASAP
if you’ve read all my qualms and are still intrigued

Roberto got in on a double leg early and took Mica down
An early footsweep attempt from Roberto tempted Taza to start shadow boxing
Roberto made his own gestured and walked into a rolling leg lock attempt from Taza
momentarily attempting a kneebar before assuming top position in reverse half guard
But Roberto didn't wait long enough to secure points
A scramble ensued and Taza put Roberto in reverse closed guard
Roberto finally unlocked in attempt to escape the position
and left his leg behind for Taza to attack
where he scored with less than a minute remaining.
The match endured for nearly three minutes on the feet before Mica jumped to closed guard and began to climb for a triangle
escaping the attack and assuming top position momentarily
coming extremely close to a pass before Mica recovered
but returned to his feet to encounter the aggressive wrestling of Gracie
who quickly attained top position and a leg drag
Taza tied up Gracie's legs and recovered to guard
but overcommitted and found himself beneath Taza
as Gracie returned to his feet and the match resumed standing and points came into effect
but the third landed him in a front headlock
momentarily attacking the neck before searching for the pass
Taza nearly reversed the position as Gracie pushed for the pass
Gracie worked in the closed guard with his head down
and Taza appeared to egg on the crowd or the referees to punish Gracie for stalling
The match ended there with no score on the board
prompting passing and leg lock attempts from Dorsey
Paganini tried to attack legs via single leg X-guard
passing outside with toreandos and then closing the distance with knee cuts
continuing to work his passing game; and with six seconds remaining in the match
he secured the pass to mount for the go-ahed points and the win
Roberto scored a takedown as the action went off the mat
but Izaak returned to his feet off the reset
Roberto attempted a lat drop toward the edge of bounds
leading to a wild scramble which nearly trampled media staff and mat-side VIPs
but the match again returned to center mat
but Roberto spun out and got behind his opponent
delivering the Australian to the mat with a huge suplex just before time expired
but Roberto picked up the victory for his aggression
putting forward pressure from seated as Galvão circled
looking to jump passed Blank's dangerous butterfly attacks
Blank's aggressive attempt to force a half guard created an opening for Mica to jump past the guard into side control
Shortly after points went into effect in this ADCC rules match
smashing Blank's legs to the sides then hopping over the guard and moving directly to mount for three points
Blank recovered again with less than a minute remaining in the bout
and with 20 seconds left Mica jumped on a guillotine
Munis scored an early advantage for coming up off of a double guard pull and immediately angled on a guard pass
he satt Adam to his hips and scored a sweep
Wardzinski tried to work his foot sweep game from the sit up guard
but couldn't maintian control of Erich's long legs
then hit a magnificent overhead sweep to mount to increase his lead to eight
Wardzinski recovered to single leg X-guard and swept to top position with less than a minute remaining
pressuring Gabi toward the edge of the mat
Pessanha released the lock against strong posturing from Porfirio
but — after a moment of pummeling — transfered to an omoplata and swept to top position in a scramble
Porfirio on a toe hold and Pessanha on an ankle lock
Pessanha re-established top position and Porfirio turtled up
taking the back and working a collar choke from the belly down position
Meyram dove to guard after a failed takedown attempt
and used a technical single leg X sweep to attain top position for two points
Meyram made distance and escaped the position
then turned onthe jets with a flurry of passing attempts which eventually landed him in side control for three more points
Diogo escaped directly into backside 50-50 and spun beneath his opponent for a deep kneebar attempt
earning an advantage then jumping onto a toe hold for another
Meyram went right back to his dynamic style and passed the guard again to pad his lead
Maquine recieved a penalty for passivity from side control with about a minute remaining on the clock
and the match returned momentarily to standing
but that gave way to a third pass for Maquine
who advanced his lead to 11 points as time expired
instead opting for an acrobatic dive to back control
The Alliance athlete never secured the points
but he secured an advantage for the effort and
Another passing threat forced Brito to turtle
Brito's flexibility saved him from several following passing attacks
pressuring the guard player through weight and movement
Ferreira made another attempt at a diving back take
where Brito found his first legitimage guard of the match: 50-50
Brito couldn't make the most of the scoring opportunity
BJJ Stars proposed a match between Ferreira and jiu-jitsu hall of famer Xande Ribeiro
Alliance's Weverton Martins opened with technically precise passing pressure
The second passing attempt forced França to turtle
where he wrestled up to top position but did not earn points
managed to pass the guard with less than a minute remaining and jumped on an armlock
he put himself ahead on the scoreboard and back into his guard to top position to secure the victory

A Lawrence teen was seriously injured on Wednesday morning after a head-on collision with another vehicle that killed a passenger in that vehicle
was driving a 2025 Honda Civic east on Interstate 70 around 8:30 a.m
on the Kansas Turnpike just past the Douglas County line near the Lawrence Service Area in Leavenworth County when he went off the road into the left ditch
according to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol
Jimenez’s vehicle bounced off two drain tubes in the ditch and continued on into the westbound lanes of traffic where it struck head-on a 2023 Mercedes Benz van
Brown’s vehicle then spun and slid backward into the ditch and hit an embankment
Brown was also seriously injured while his passenger
Jimenez was taken to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka

2025) – New York Red Bulls II have acquired Panamanian forward Mijahir Jiménez on a one-year loan from CD Plaza Amador through the 2025 season with an option to extend loan
“We are looking forward to having (Mijahir) Jimenez on the team” say Head Coach Ibrahim Sekagya “He is a strong young striker who will add physicality to our front line.”
The 18-year-old forward has made 24 appearances with CD Plaza Amador in Liga Panamena
His first career professional goal was an 85th game winner in a 2-1 win over Veraguas United FC on March 11
Jimenez is the youngest striker to debut for CD Plaza Amador
at 16 years 306 days old against Sporting San Miguelito
TRANSACTION: New York Red Bulls II have acquired Panamanian forward Mijahir Jimenez on a one-year loan from CD Plaza Amador through the 2025 season
Now, the No. 1 Razorbacks (31-3) won't go a weekend without using their top righty option out of the bullpen
Jimenez underwent Tommy John surgery on March 5, 2024. About 11 months later, he made his Arkansas debut in the night cap of an Opening Day doubleheader
he's upped his velocity and appeared more comfortable with every appearance
slowly drifting toward the type of stuff he displayed as a freshman in 2023 with the Beavers
Getting back on the mound in less than a year has wowed Jimenez's teammates and coaches
so the Southwest Times Record spoke with Arkansas baseball athletic trainer Corey Wood this month about his speedy recovery and how Jimenez was able to become a key fiure for the top-ranked team in America
"There was never a thought that he wasn’t going to throw this season
but if it didn’t happen it wasn’t going to be the end of the world for him," Wood said
"From the second he got here he attacked his rehab and never had a setback

More: Canadian power at the top: Charles Davalan sparks Arkansas baseball's offensive surge
the pitcher was behind on his rehab schedule and surprised that he should be further along
But Jimenez had all the physical tools to expedite the process
Wood said one of the biggest concerns for a pitcher coming off Tommy John is his range of motion
but Jimenez almost had 'too much' mobility
That allowed the staff to focus on the weight room and maximizing his strong build
Dave Van Horn highlighted Jimenez strength multiple times in the preseason
Jimenez began throwing off a mound in November and then faced live hitters in January
Jimenez allowed two runs in two innings across his first two outings
but he's turned into a dominant force out of the bullpen
He's allowed one earned run and struck out 21 batters his last 17⅓ innings
"When you say someone’s back in 10-to-12 months
that’s always the target to just get back on the mound," Wood said
"They’re not going to be crisp and they might not be able to get guys out
Aiden's starting to feel like his old self now
Jimenez's old self is a five-pitch arsenal with devastating tilt from the right side
He throws three different fastballs — including a cutter — to go along with a slider and splitfinger changeup
with two walks complimenting his 3-0 record and 1.42 ERA
"I’m just trying to throw the least amount of pitches as possible," Jimenez said
See what they’ve got and give them my best shot every pitch.”
Jimenez dominance has elevated the pitching staff's ceiling
Christian Foutch has struggled out of the bullpen
while Parker Coil and Gage Wood are currently dealing with injuries
Jimenez has covered up those cracks as a capable multi-inning option out of the bullpen
His lone save of the year was a three-inning appearance against Ole Miss on March 15
The final step is building Jimenez up back into a starter
He still hasn't thrown more than 57 pitches in a game this year and needs more time building stamina to move into the rotation
But that's the furthest thing from Jimenez's mind
Jimenez said he's only focused on doing whatever his team needs and transitioning to a starter could wait until he turns pro
"He’s not concerned with being a closer or being a starter," Van Horn said
"He just wants to get better and help the team win

I will graduate with a bachelor of science in psychology and a minor in human development and family studies
Earning a college degree can feel daunting
especially as a first-generation Latina student
and you often find yourself unsure of what to expect or who to turn to for answers to all your questions
I worked full time in health care while I attended the U full time and I got my bachelor’s done in four years
I worked as a medical assistant at a few different clinics
I’ve been at Primary Children’s Medical Center
My experience in healthcare greatly impacted my decision on what degree to pursue
But witnessing how much PCMC social workers contributed to children’s overall experience and recovery left a lasting impression on me
So I switched my major to psychology and started applying to graduate programs
This fall I’ll be starting the master of social work program at Weber State University
No one in my family has pursued a Master’s degree
but the support and pride from my family help me stay grounded
I know I’m following the path that feels right for me
Some of my fondest memories at the U are about studying with classmates for hours at the library
I knew I could ask any question and get a helpful answer
but I also enjoyed being in a place that was lively and bustling
but I can confidently say the library was a cornerstone of my success.”

Jiménez driven at Rays camp: 'You guys are going to see'February 16th
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Eloy Jiménez doesn’t mince words when talking about how frustrating last season was
nor can he hide how happy he is for a fresh start
“Last year was a disaster,” he said Sunday morning
Jiménez looks like something of a new man this spring
The former White Sox slugger reported to Rays camp at Charlotte Sports Park with a fitter physique
having lost 25-30 pounds during the offseason
and a smile on his face as he begins his pursuit for a spot on the Rays’ Opening Day roster
The Rays signed Jiménez to a non-roster Minor League deal in December that will reportedly pay him $2 million if he makes the team
He said he jumped at the opportunity to sign with Tampa Bay and passed up other offers for a few reasons: the proximity to his family
the club’s reputation for being competitive on the field and fun in the clubhouse
and the opportunity to re-establish himself after a rough season
The injuries have piled up for Jiménez in recent years
as he has averaged 89 games per season since 2021 and played only 82 total games in the outfield during that time
He went on the injured list twice last season
first with a left adductor strain and again with a left hamstring strain
he hit just .238/.289/.336 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 98 games
and he thinks he can get back to the hitter he was early in his career with the White Sox
won a Silver Slugger Award after posting an .891 OPS in 2020 and posted a 141 OPS+ in ‘22
I always believe in me,” Jiménez said Sunday
but this is a new year and a new organization
Jiménez took batting practice on the main field at Charlotte Sports Park on Sunday morning
joking around with new teammates like Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero
He said he had some familiarity with those two
a friend dating back to their time in the Cubs’ Minor League system
The Rays already like what they’ve seen from Jiménez physically
He said he incorporated more running into his offseason workouts -- “Way more than I used to,” he said -- and feels like he’s in good shape after dropping so much weight
happy with the work that I put in this offseason

Jiménez will have to earn a spot on the roster
likely as a right-handed-hitting designated hitter or corner outfielder
Manager Kevin Cash said the Rays will look at him in the outfield and have him work at first base
“This is a guy that has shown a track record of hitting -- really hitting
Camp notes• Ha-Seong Kim
hit off a tee in the batting cage and took ground balls with the rest of Tampa Bay’s infielders on Sunday
Cash said Kim was “adamant” that he wanted to be as involved as possible with the team
even though he’ll miss Opening Day to complete his rehab
Even just the arm action flipping the ball in
“That’s really encouraging that he is to the point where he can come out there and do a lot of the activities.”
• Díaz reported a day early and joined the club’s workout on Sunday
Díaz and a handful of other hitters took batting practice on the main field at Charlotte Sports Park
hitting off a pitching machine firing higher-velocity fastballs and breaking balls
• The Rays will hold their first official full-squad workout of the spring on Monday morning
Nearly everyone has already reported to camp
and the rest are expected to arrive in time for the workout
Jiménez chooses to stay with Durham to start the seasonCash hoping to get Jansen back in action before end of campMarch 22nd
but chemistry can play a big part in the decision-making process
Just ask Eloy Jiménez
Jiménez was informed on Friday that he will be optioned to Triple-A Durham
and though the Rays gave him the option to pursue a Major League career elsewhere
It was a choice Jiménez made after talking things over with his family
and one he said was made that much easier by the environment he’s found himself in this spring
so we just want to give it a try and see what happens,” Jiménez said
In a testament to just how well he’s gelled with his new team since he signed a Minor League deal with Tampa Bay on Dec. 23
a line of Rays filed past Jiménez’s locker on Saturday morning to shake his hand and wish him well
“It was fun; I really loved it,” Jiménez said of his camp
“One of the reasons I’m staying [is] because I feel really good
Jiménez hit .310 (9-for-29) with one double
two homers and six RBIs over his past nine spring games
showing flashes of the big bat that drew such hype during his first two MLB seasons
The 28-year-old ultimately lost the battle for Tampa Bay’s final open utility spot to Curtis Mead
but that didn’t dim Jiménez’s smile for long: He feels like this spring is the start of a turning point and said he has “no doubt” that he’s back to being able to do damage against big league pitching
Saturday marked the Rays’ final game at Charlotte Sports Park for the spring
though they have two Grapefruit League games remaining (Sunday vs
Tuesday is a full off-day for the position players
while some pitchers will return to Port Charlotte to throw in backfield games
the Rays will play a roughly five-inning intrasquad game at Steinbrenner Field to get a final lay of the land at the Yankees' spring complex before opening the regular season there against the Rockies at 4:10 p.m
“I think they're pretty acclimated to that field
but we'll have plenty of days leading into Opening Day where we can get their reps and see ..
how the ball plays off the outfield walls and different angles and stuff like that,” manager Kevin Cash said
Danny Jansen, whom Tampa Bay signed to a one-year deal on Dec. 12
has not played since March 19 due to discomfort in his intercostal area
Cash said he’d like to see the catcher back in action either Monday or Wednesday
“We're trying to just manage and keep him off the field for a couple days,” Cash added
so we're still optimistic about everything.”
he accepted the significant change in scenery that was presented to him
The 28-year-old slugger has kept that mindset alive as a member of the Durham Bulls this season
trying things he never did with the Chicago White Sox or Baltimore Orioles
Jiménez started at first base for Triple-A Durham on Saturday in the second game of their doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons
An outfielder by trade and a designated hitter more often than not
Jiménez's appearance there marked the second of his 12-year professional career
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning
Damiano Palmegiani sent a pop fly Jiménez's way
The veteran camped under it and made then catch before smiling and throwing his arms up in the air in celebration on his way back to the dugout
Eloy Jimenez is playing 1st base for just the 2nd time in his pro career todayWe dare you to watch his reaction to catching a popup without smiling 😁 pic.twitter.com/eDmhWUfMXc
Jiménez's first career appearance at first base came on April 5
He has now logged 17.0 innings at the position without making an error
He hit .244 with a .694 OPS in spring training
Jiménez finished fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2019
He was a .275 hitter with an .811 career OPS in the big leagues through 2023
before he hit .238 with a .626 OPS between Chicago and Baltimore in 2024
Jiménez could be on the shortlist of options that the Rays can turn to if any of their veteran hitters go down with injuries
he will continue to set the stage for his career resurgence in the minors
suiting up for the Bulls wherever necessary

In August, Michael Flores stopped doing his irregularly scheduled pop-ups under the banner of Friends’ Barbecue to join his family’s business, Jiménez Tortilleria y Taqueria. You may have read about the Lubbock restaurant’s amazing tacos de guisado from our taco editor
the family has tweaked the name to Jiménez y Friends Barbecue y Taqueria
and it offers a full barbecue menu every Saturday and Sunday
I first met Flores at the 2023 Texas Monthly BBQ Fest
He handed me a smoked barbacoa taco and a link of sausage split lengthwise
showing off bits of jalapeño and cubes of Oaxaca cheese
but the pop-up schedule was too sporadic to plan a trip around
After Flores reached out in August with the good news about the changes at Jiménez
Jiménez y Friends Barbecue y Taqueria is a takeout-only business
Customers wait for their food in a small lobby with a drink cooler; an ordering counter manned by Mark and his son
Marcus; and a bakery case packed with colorful conchas
buttery cookies that are as light as air and covered in cinnamon and sugar
but the barbecue and tacos needed my immediate attention
The rental-car company made the bewildering choice to give me
but the rear cargo space was generous enough to allow me to lay out my significant barbecue haul
I pity those who wait until they get home to dive into the Specialty Dawg taco
It starts with a double layer of house-made
five-inch corn tortillas topped with pureed (not refried) beans
and a split link of the same smoked sausage I first tried in Lockhart
The cut sides of the sausage had been browned a bit on the flattop
it ain’t worth it” is the tagline on the business’s Instagram page
A splash of the red salsa made it even better (or worse
Customers can also experience the brisket on its own
each slice dripping with juice and encrusted with a crunchy bark
by ordering one of the barbecue combo plates
Make sure to get the green chile cheese hominy as a side
which is like a warm hug of savory goodness
The juicy smoked turkey and the sweet and smoky pork belly are great options
Flores seasons them with just salt and pepper before smoking
then wraps them with some brown sugar in foil to rest
and there’s more smoke in that deep red bark than the color advertises
Flores said his rib method is based on what he learned from Andrew Hill of Hill Barbecue
moved their operation from Lubbock to New Braunfels this spring
just a few months after Lubbock’s legendary Tom & Bingo’s Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q closed
The loss of the pair left a hole in central Lubbock’s barbecue scene that Flores is now filling
At 29, Flores is young, but he’s no rookie. While attending Texas Tech for his restaurant, hotel, and institutional management degree, he worked late shifts in the pit room at the Shack BBQ
“I wanted to get into barbecue because nobody in my family knew how to do it properly,” he said
He learned some smoking skills at the Shack
and it was there that he developed his preference for pecan wood
which he still uses exclusively in the Primitive Pits smoker that sits in front of Jiménez
Flores decided to take a job in the big city
He moved to Dallas and worked as a food broker
“I would daydream about barbecue all the time,” he said
He planned to use his corporate earnings to save up enough money to start some sort of barbecue venture
“The plan was to always leave and come back to West Texas—I didn’t realize how soon it was going to be,” he said
referring to how the company he worked for was bought out less than a year after he moved to Dallas
his family opened Jiménez Tortilleria y Taqueria
Flores first supplied the taqueria with briskets and beef ribs for its weekend taco menu
It just happened naturally,” he said of the partnership
He used to watch Maria slowly simmer beef cheeks for her barbacoa in the kitchen
but Flores convinced her to let him smoke the beef cheeks until they could be easily shredded
Flores also swears the brisket gets only salt and pepper
“We’re very simplistic in our cooking
but I think it packs a big punch,” he said
The family merger has been beneficial to all
“I am constantly asking [my mother] to try things
and she does the same thing with me,” Flores said
but the fact remains that Maria used to have the restaurant kitchen to herself
Now there’s a barbecue operation being run out of there on the weekends
so whatever she says goes,” Flores said about any needed conflict resolution
Just watching Maria work in the kitchen is a learning opportunity for him
He draws inspiration from “the way she cares for the cut of meat,” he said
whether that meat is for one of the the long-simmering guisados or the calabacitas con puerco
Its American Football lager is brewed with a big batch of Jiménez corn tortillas to give it some local flavor
The family has already made quite an impression on the Lubbock food scene since opening Jiménez Tortilleria y Taqueria. Jiménez’s trio of tacos de guisado made Texas Monthly‘s recently released list of the fifty best tacos in Texas
The possibilities for this new version of the restaurant are even more exciting
given that Jiménez is already serving some of the best barbecue in Lubbock
I asked Flores when he and his family members will consider adding more barbecue hours and if they have a timeline for adding the dining room these tacos and barbecued meats deserve
He understands the demand and agrees that the takeout-only model isn’t a forever solution
“We’re trying to enjoy the moment we’re in.”

he explains what made him embrace Kensington and why the fear of immigrants is just plain wrong
I’ll call you Chef because after watching The Bear
I feel like that’s what I’m supposed to do.[Laughs] Thank you
My house is just starting to think about Christmas
but I know that another holiday has been on your mind of late: November’s Day of the Dead
Is this holiday actually a big deal in your motherland?Oh yes
The only thing maybe bigger countrywide is Mexican Independence Day
it’s all about memories and respect for those who have passed away
It’s a time to connect with them as well as with those who are still living
And what form does the Day of the Dead take in your house?Every year
we dedicate an altar to the people who died from our family but also especially here in our Kensington community
We encourage people who have lost family members in Kensington to come and put a picture of their loved ones on the altar at our restaurant
And I put mole and tamales and el pulque — this is a drink we make from the agave sap — on the altar
Given that Mexico has such a huge Catholic population
I can only assume that Christmas is also a major celebration. Not really
Our big religious holiday is Three Kings Day on January 6th
and whoever wins the toy has to make tamales and atole for the family on February 2nd
Cantina is going to be three years old this February
what did people say when you told them you were opening a restaurant in Kensington?People told me I was crazy
but Kensington … I had relatives tell me to just give them all of my money instead of me throwing it away
but the challenges are different every day
You face things you’ve never had to face before in other restaurants
Dionicio Jiménez heating things up in the kitchen at Cantina la Martina / Photograph by Kyle Kielinski
Tell me about your hometown.San Mateo Ozolco
there were maybe two or three thousand people there
So you might have to walk to get to the next town
My earliest memories from there are taking care of the animals
We planted fava beans and all kinds of other vegetables
And what we planted would become what we ate for the next season
When did you come to the United States?I’m 48 now
I did good in school in Mexico and wanted to go to university
so I traveled all over for a couple of years taking whatever work I could get
He was in Philadelphia working as a food runner for Stephen Starr
and then go back to Mexico and use our money to open a restaurant
And how did you actually get here?Illegally
I took a plane from Mexico City to Tijuana
Then I walked through the desert and into Arizona
My brother sent some guy in Arizona money to drive me to L.A
and then buy me a plane ticket to Philadelphia
and I got on that plane without having any idea what would happen next
What was your first impression of Philadelphia?Well
my brother told me a lot about Philadelphia
so I kind of had an idea of what the city would be like
But what I didn’t expect was how cold it was
Where did you find work?My brother knew someone who used to work for Philippe Chin at the Locust Club
and I was working the next morning as a dishwasher at that restaurant
this guy named Marc walks in to see Philippe
He saw me washing dishes and asked me if I wanted him to teach me some cooking tricks
I was originally thinking I wouldn’t stay in Philadelphia for long
I realized I should throw myself 100 percent into the kitchen there
I told Chef Marc I wanted to learn more and more
He also sent me up to work in New York with Mario Batali and Rocco DiSpirito
Interesting to go from working at a relatively small but magnificent operation like Vetri to working for Starr
who stood at the helm of a really big company.Yes
joining the Starr restaurant taught me about all of these different systems of restaurants
about the business of running a restaurant
I really wanted my own restaurant where I could make my own rules
Did I want to have that restaurant in Kensington
and the location that I could afford wound up being in Kensington
I would come up to the neighborhood and see certain things that would scare me away
I came in the morning just before school was starting
and I saw all of these families everywhere
I just got married to my current wife three months ago
I have four kids from my previous marriage
and my wife — her name is Mariangeli Alicea Saez — has three from her previous marriage
[laughs] My wife works with me and does so many things
She was an architect in Puerto Rico and then here in Philadelphia
You opened your second restaurant — La Baja in Ambler — just a few months ago
Has the community there embraced you?I cannot complain
We needed to diversify our income so that we can keep Cantina floating and stay with the people of Kensington
So we applied for and got various pop-up permits at Penn’s Landing and in Fishtown and also opened La Baja
The money from these helps us with Cantina
The goat barbacoa at Cantina la Martina / Photograph by Michael Persico
What’s the biggest misconception Americans have about Mexican food? That it’s all tacos or quesadillas or that everything has to be fried
it’s important to remember that there are more than 30 states in Mexico
and each of those states has at least five different versions of mole of their own
There are even some regions that do curries
but you’ve probably never heard of Mexican curry
And depending on what part of Mexico we are talking about
Is there something you’ve served at Cantina that most Americans haven’t encountered?Cow’s head tacos
And you can choose to have it served with the actual head on your table
we have a big table that we put all the heads on so everyone can see
Mexico is high on my list of travel destinations
but somehow I think that’s a lot of fearmongering.Depends on where you’re going
Definitely want nothing to do with all-inclusive resorts or mega-touristy areas. You have to spend a couple of days in Mexico City and try the nighttime food markets there
from all kinds of insects for eating to the weirdest meats you can ever imagine
And I would also send you to some of the small towns of Puebla
Just try to travel only in the morning and no later than 3 to 4 p.m
As someone who eventually became a citizen and now owns not one but two businesses
what do you say when you hear all of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that’s become so prevalent these days?I mean
everybody thinks we came here to harm the country
to live off the system and take everybody’s jobs
A lot of people who came here as illegal immigrants now own their own businesses and pay lots of taxes
I would say that you care even more about the city you are in than the people who were born there
I wouldn’t be who I am right now if not for Philadelphia
I want to take care of Kensington and Philadelphia

Minneapolis-based author Abby Jimenez often mines the details of her life for her contemporary romance novels
The grief depicted in “The Happy Ever After Playlist” mirrors real grief she experienced
The infertility in “The Friend Zone” was based on her best friend’s infertility struggle
“Say You’ll Remember Me” (out April 1 from Forever)
is a love letter to a very specific thing in her past: a blue 1966 Dodge Dart convertible
the car was a gift from Jimenez’s grandfather for her 16th birthday
“Every single thing that happens to Samantha in the book happened to me,” Jimenez says
Jimenez will be at Town Hall Seattle on Thursday
for an event with Seattle Arts & Lectures detailing her story from successful baker — she owns Nadia Cakes — to New York Times bestselling author
We chatted with Jimenez ahead of the event about “Say You’ll Remember Me,” her characters and the romance genre
Who are our main characters in “Say You’ll Remember Me”
He’s steady and steadfast and loyal to the people he cares about
(Xavier’s very instantly in love) — I don’t want that to scare readers — but I think the chemistry is so real between these two
I think all of us have met somebody who just hits us that certain way and you can’t forget about them
(The book) is about making memories and losing them
It’s really what we get with these characters
Something that’s different about this book from your others is that it isn’t fully set in Minnesota
It is set in the same universe (as my other books)
The book takes place in Glendale and Minneapolis
I wrote a lot of my own memories — the house is actually my grandfather’s house in Glendale
The car I give (Samantha) is the car I drove when I was 16
Fun fact for Seattleites — he’s coming to see you at this Seattle event
but happens to have a kid in Seattle and happens to be visiting (when I’m in town)
I’m going to see him for the first time since 1996
do you ever think about the characters from your earlier books — or are they just gone after you write the last page
It’s funny because I have this one reader who loves the universe I’ve created and asked if she could do a deep dive and make a chart of all the connections
When she did — (I realized) Josh from “The Friend Zone” is now in his 40s
My eighth untitled book is already done and I’m several chapters into my ninth which will be (released in) 2027
Every single year I feel like I write a book about friends
I love sharing my characters with my readers
It’s such a thrill because I’m equally as invested
What do you love about the romance genre right now
I am so proud and happy to be a part of the new world of romance
Seeing Target carry more romance because we’ve transitioned to these cutesy covers
Seeing more people reading the same books that people have always read
one thing I really love to see is so many people saying “I was never a reader,” or “I lost my love and now I’m reading 50 books a year
it changed my whole life.” I think distraction and escapism is so important and I think romance is such a safe space
you’ll get a happily ever after — you can go on this journey and everything is going to be fine
I’m an introvert and I think a lot of my readers are also introverts
so I have to remind myself that they are just as nervous to come as I am to be seen there
I can feel the difference between my audience and the audiences of other authors
it’s such an inclusive and embraced situation — people go alone and they meet people in line and chatting and it’s just the coolest thing

DH Jiménez agrees to join Rays on Minor League deal (sources)December 23rd
TAMPA, Fla. -- Looking to bounce back after a tough season at the plate, designated hitter Eloy Jiménez has agreed to a Minor League deal with the Rays
and terms of the agreement were not available
Jiménez will have a chance to return to form with the Rays
who are taking a low-risk opportunity to potentially add power to their lineup
was a productive-when-healthy hitter for the White Sox from 2019-23
The Dominican slugger hit .275/.324/.487 with 89 homers and 275 RBIs in 436 games for Chicago during his first five seasons in the Majors
although injuries prevented him from ever topping the 122 games he played as a rookie in ’19
But Jiménez’s production fell off dramatically last season
when he hit just .238/.289/.336 with six homers and 23 RBIs in 98 games between the White Sox and Orioles
Baltimore acquired him from Chicago at the Trade Deadline and gave him a shot as a part-time DH
but he struggled for the playoff-bound Orioles and became a free agent when they declined his $16.5 million club option for next season
betting on Jiménez to rebound is a worthwhile
The Rays likely view him as an option at DH
as he’s played only 15 games in the outfield the past two years and only 82 dating back to 2021
Their current DH options are Jonathan Aranda and a handful of regular position players
left fielder Christopher Morel and right fielder Josh Lowe
But there’s no doubt the Rays need more offense overall after scoring only 604 runs
The Rays also ranked among the league’s worst in terms of home runs (147
and their designated hitters produced a combined .238/.304/.373 slash line on the year
Jiménez was once one of baseball’s top prospects, peaking at No. 3 overall on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list before the 2019 season. The White Sox inked him to a six-year, $43 million contract extension in March 2019
making him the third player in history to sign an extension before his MLB debut
Jiménez lived up to the hype over his first two seasons
recording 45 homers with 120 RBIs and an .848 OPS in 177 games across 2019-20 and earning a Silver Slugger Award at the end of the shortened '20 campaign
his offensive production declined over the past four years (50 homers
and he has essentially become a full-time designated hitter due to his defensive limitations
Jiménez missed the first 99 games of the 2021 season after sustaining a rupture of his left pectoral tendon during Spring Training
a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee cost him another 65 games
Jiménez made two trips to the injured list in 2023
the first with a left hamstring strain and the second after undergoing an appendectomy
going on the IL with a left adductor strain in April and a left hamstring strain in May
His tenure with the White Sox came to an end on July 30 when they traded him to the O's for Minor League pitcher Trey McGough
but Jiménez struggled over 33 games in a Baltimore uniform

– When Kelvin Jimenez lost his leg in a boating accident on January 3
he thought he would never kick a soccer ball again
soccer was more than just a sport to him – it was his identity
I played seven days a week and I traveled all over the United States
Soccer consumed my life,” he said of his life pre-accident
and then you take that away and I was destroyed
It was while going through treatment at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown
that his doctor told him about amputee soccer
“They gave me the website to go research and I was like
‘Soccer on crutches?’ It’s something you’ve never heard of in your life and then you’re like
Because if somebody gives you an opportunity to play the sport you love
That’s when the name Nico Calabria first started buzzing in Jimenez’s ears
a co-founder of the New England Amputee Soccer Association and captain of the United States Amputee Team
is someone Jimenez credits with quite literally saving his life
Calabria invited him to train with the team
waiting patiently for the moment Jimenez felt ready to get back onto the pitch
I think I’m ready,’ but then I wouldn’t go
coping with the life-changing situation I was in,” Jimenez explained
one otherwise unremarkable afternoon while driving for Lyft
Jimenez received a sign that he simply could not ignore
“I picked up a group of about five people,” he recalled
it was so cool that your roommate came out with us to the concert
He was on one leg and crushing it on the dance floor
He threw his crutches and was busting a move.’ And I was like
but any chance their name is Nico Calabria?’”
In what felt like an undeniable twist of fate
Jimenez discovered that he was driving Calabria’s roommate
“I took it as destiny and from that day on Revolution Amputee Soccer has made such an impact on my life
It made me realize that this sport is something bigger than us.”
Jimenez describes that first practice as nerve-wracking for multiple reasons
Not only was he initially clueless about the mechanics of playing soccer on crutches
it was also his first time wearing shorts since his accident
the lifetime goalkeeper had to make the switch to playing in the field
field players must be without a lower limb
while goalkeepers must be without an upper limb.)
“It was a lot of mental battles,” he recalled
“I had to learn to move on crutches and I was a righty
It’s probably one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done
With that first training session as a springboard
Jimenez went on to not only represent the Revolution
receiving a call-up to represent the United States Amputee Team in 2023
It was an honor he deems beyond explanation
His mother came to America from El Salvador
“Representing the country that you were born in is something so special,” he said
(This country) gave my family a second opportunity at life and changed the whole dynamic of our history
when that national anthem comes on and you’re wearing those colors
and blue actually takes second place to his proudest accomplishment in amputee soccer
dreaming of one day playing at Gillette Stadium
that dream has become a reality – multiple times
“That was the coolest thing ever,” he said of playing in conjunction with Revolution first team games for the first time
But God gave me this opportunity to fulfill my dream.”
Last year’s game against Metro NY Amputee Soccer (sporting New York City FC's colors) – the first-ever full amputee soccer match at a major U.S
who had spent years working two jobs and rarely had the chance to attend his games
waiting with open arms for a tearful embrace
The New England Amputee Soccer Association started with just two players in 2018 and has since grown to a full squad of athletes
With 13 regional teams across the United States
it’s that opportunity to provide representation for those with limb differences and being a role model for young athletes which makes it all so meaningful
“Representation is everything,” he explained
It shows the young kids that they don’t have to be exempt
I think that’s a huge reason why this sport has grown so much
We’re setting something up for the next generation.”
With a new season for the Revolution Amputee Team on the horizon
Jimenez hopes to continue witnessing the sport’s growth and expand the league’s impact on youth
“This sport is bigger than us,” he reiterated
It’s about the little kid out there who looks up to us.”
The Revs Amputee Team will play their first game of the year at Gillette Stadium on April 19
following the Revolution first team’s clash with NYCFC
“I don’t recommend that Revs fans miss this
Stick around after the game,” Jimenez said
You will be mind-blown if you watch what these athletes can do
With every ticket purchased for the April 19 game through THIS LINK
Amputee Soccer returns to Gillette Stadium this season
The New England Revolution Amputee Soccer Team will take on the New York Metro Amputee Soccer Team following the conclusion of the first team’s match
Thanks for visiting
Scallops and chorizo meet Thai curry; hibiscus-braised short rib mingles with risotto — the menu at La Baja is a chimera of culinary influences
Carnitas de pato and ravioles de aguacate con cangrejo from La Baja / Photography by Breanne Furlong
And I like it because it is a thing made from pieces of other things — the wings of a monarch butterfly
strong enough to survive migrating across half the world; the head of a wise elephant; and those squirming
A history encapsulated in dream logic and bright lacquer paint because Jiménez
is his own kind of alebrije — a chimera who came to the States in his 20s from Mexico
then finding his way into the kitchens of Vetri
Decades in the industry taught him to be an octopus — to adapt
And when the time came for him to go his own way
he opened Cantina La Martina in the heart of Kensington
and gained national recognition for his Mexican cuisine twined with this hot thread of every other thing he’d learned to cook and eat and love along the way
La Baja is a further distillation of that impulse — no longer chasing the dragon of “authenticity,” he does a cuisine here born of every shift he’s worked
every post he’s stood in a dozen different kitchens
Jiménez has a carnitas de pato entrée on his menu — a whole roasted duck with bao buns
and nopales — that I will probably never get to taste because I am a fundamentally chaotic human and can never get my shit together enough to order it three days in advance
I can comfort myself with bok choy sautéed with salsa macha and elote corn ribs
allowing you to strip away the charred kernels dressed in preserved lemon
and tan tan dust (used to amp the heat in spicy ramen)
under the calm gaze of La Baja’s bright butterfly octophant
I roll in with friends for the special — big-ass prawns curled in a puddle of unbelievably good and gentle green mole
and an arugula salad topped with slivered red onion and trout roe
so I ask the server (alone on the floor on a night that’s worryingly quiet) if we can split it as an app — one plate for the pair of us
that’s kind of a pro move.” And she’s right
because we load down the table with plates of prawns in mole; ravioles made of fanned avocado and stuffed with blue crab
and a xnipec salsa that’s all sweet habanero heat and a razor of vinegar brightness; fists of short rib
braised in hibiscus and Mexican chocolate and mounted atop a bowl of creamy Italian risotto; and perfect pork belly
seared crisp and served between two quenelles of sweet potato puree like a remembered taste of Thanksgivings past
there are still only two other tables with guests in the dining room
I said that the best thing about Cantina La Martina was that everything you eat there is something you know — just the best version of it you’ve ever had
a late-night ramen shop or Chinatown or bland frontera fusion or anything else either
Its own alebrije — a combination of decades of study and influence
all coming together as a pure expression of singular identity. It’s not like anything you’ve had before
But it may be the best version of Dionicio Jiménez’s cuisine yet
