Cloud Tech 7-0 only surrendering one goal in the second half on Saturday
“We started off really shaky in the first half,” Moreno said
“Our girls looked really tired but we really picked it up in the second half
We let six in the first half and only one in the second half
Cloud Tech’s Maggie O’Hara secured a hat trick for the Tigers’ fourth unanswered goal
He wanted to see the Lakers loosen up and enjoy their time on the field together
“The girls looked really tense,” Moreno said
We need to have fun because if you're not having fun
His words were put into action as Detroit Lakes’ defense took it to another level
They let up some shots but that wasn’t without a Laker in sight to affect the Tigers
The offense had a couple of good looks but couldn’t find the back fo the net
the frustrations of the season were visible on the faces of the Lakers
Detroit Lakes has scored only two goals through eight games
They’ve been shut out five times and have let up seven or more goals in five matches
the Lakers are still finding ways to make every moment with each other one to remember
“This is a great group of kids and they're a super funny and fun group,” Moreno said
“They know that we're a young team and we're just going through growing pains
It sucks because no one wants to be losing by this margin every single game
they know that we're a young team and we're still developing.”
Moreno is learning a whole lot during his first season
He’s learned that his views of coaching soccer are changing
“These girls have kept me on my toes every single day,” Moreno said
“They surprise me with new things every time we're in practice and games
and ‘What should we continue doing?’ So these girls just keep me on my toes
and it's just changing how I viewed soccer in a way.”

Former President Donald Trump is offering campaign advice for Republican Kari Lake's bid for a Senate seat in Arizona
Trump urged Lake and Bernie Moreno, a fellow Trump loyalist running against Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio
to campaign "almost exclusively" on immigration in a pair of posts to Truth Social on Thursday
"Kari Lake and Bernie Moreno should be running almost exclusively on the Safety and Security of their States
not allowing Illegal Aliens to get anywhere near Arizona or Ohio
and getting the ones that are already in - OUT!" Trump wrote
In a statement emailed to Newsweek on Thursday
a Lake campaign spokesperson said: "We agree!"
Moreno spokesperson Reagan McCarthy called Trump's advice "spot on" in a statement to Newsweek
"Sherrod Brown is a radical left Democrat whose horrific votes and policies have led to the disaster in Springfield," McCarthy said
"We won't stop until we hold Sherrod Brown and every one of his radical left enablers responsible for the havoc they have inflicted upon Ohio."
Trump's Truth Social posts alluded to an unsubstantiated claim concerning migrants from Haiti abducting and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. The former president promoted the claim during his presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday
"Bernie Moreno has a very good chance of winning Ohio against a Radical Left Democrat
and other parts of the State," Trump wrote
"Ohio is being inundated with Illegal Migrants
who are taking over Towns and Villages at a level and rate never seen before."
There is no credible evidence to support the migrant pet-eating claim, which has been rebuked by Springfield officials and others. However, Trump, his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance
and others have continued to spread the conspiracy theory
The former president also claimed on Thursday that Harris and President Joe Biden were allowing millions of criminals to cross the U.S.-Mexico border
Trump included special counsel Jack Smith—a U.S
citizen who is prosecuting him on federal felony election subversion charges—as an example of the type of migrant criminals that he claims are crossing the border
"Comrade Kamala Harris and her now Missing in Action Boss
have allowed more than 21 Million people into our Country
seriously deranged people (like Jack Smith!)
and others too bad to even mention," wrote Trump
Trump went on to praise Lake as "one of the strongest in the Country on Border Security" while maintaining that her opponent, Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego
is "in favor of Open Borders" and "allowing people to pour into and destroy Arizona."
Last month, the Arizona Police Association, that state's biggest police association, announced that it was endorsing Gallego just days after its president delivered an in-person endorsement of Trump at a Phoenix-area rally that also featured Lake
Recent polls have consistently shown Gallego holding a significant lead over Lake, with a pair of polls released last month showing the congressman with double-digit leads
Lake has dismissed the unfavorable results as "garbage" while citing her own internal polling and GOP-sponsored surveys showing a closer race as examples of "real polls."
In Ohio, which has had a clear Republican lean over the last several election cycles, the race appears to be tightening
although Brown has been leading in all major polls released so far

(KPLC) - A Lake Charles man and his wife are facing charges after he reportedly raped three young children and she failed to notify law enforcement
Calcasieu Parish detectives began investigating after receiving a tip that Jared Moreno
had been molesting two family members who were under age 12
The person who gave the tip to detectives said she learned of the rape from Jared’s wife
told detectives Moreno had molested her when she was 5 years old
Lova is employed by the Calcasieu Parish School Board as a French immersion teacher at Henry Heights Elementary
While these charges do not pertain to the district
we cannot comment further due to it being a personnel matter
The CPSB staff directory lists Jared Moreno as a tech support hardware technician
failed to notify law enforcement of the sexual abuse and took steps to hinder the investigation
including allowing the girls to stay with Jared after learning of the abuse
The couple was arrested March 26 and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center
Jared Moreno is facing three counts of first-degree rape and aggravated rape
Lova Moreno is facing a charge of failure to report the commission of certain felonies
the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort of the Lakers throughout the first 40 minutes of the 2024 season
“I think our girls were a bit nervous first half when we came out,” Moreno said
“How I would describe it was we were playing to not lose instead of playing to win
and they really picked it up second half.”
The night's first score came from the foot of Little Falls’ Richelle Thompson in the opening 10 minutes of the match
She scored again 12 minutes later to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead with 19:23 left before the break
Detroit Lakes’ Sedrah Krogsgaard sent the game into halftime with a missed opportunity that had Laker fans convinced the ball found the back of the net
The Lakers kept the ball at the feet for most of the game but continued to narrowly miss shots on goal like Krogsgaard’s strike before the half
Detroit Lakes carried the momentum into the second half where Krogsgaard continued her shooting barrage
Moreno took over a youthful team that showed promise in his first game at the helm
he was forced to put younger players into important positions
She took over shot-saving duties from star goalie Elle Bettcher
Bettcher became the program's career saves leader with 884 and set a Minnesota state record for most saves in a singles season (412)
I think she (Rufer) was the one who was most nervous,” Moreno said
but I'm proud of her for stepping up and taking the field with the other 11 more experienced girls.”
Rufer saw four ball get past her but gained key experience as she’ll continue to grow into her role as the last line of defense
But Moreno wants to see more from the girls in front of her to make her life as a young shot-stopper easier
we just need to work on the little things,” he said
clear the ball when it needs to be cleared or just be a little more aggressive
If they're playing more of a boot-ball and they got fast girls
then maybe we need to adapt to their style as well.”
Three of Moreno’s six seniors were handed captains’ patches to be his extended voice on the field and in the locker room – Tea Janich
Skadsem didn’t see action because of an injury
But King showed why she is a special talent
Her stellar footwork constantly had Flyers guessing
King’s IQ of the beautiful game allowed her to find open teammates and direct those who might’ve been lost
King’s poised to be one of the best attackers in the conference and section
“She brings that X factor to the team and extra spark
I would consider her one of our best players in the squad
and she really lifts and motivates the younger girls
he coached the junior varsity boys and girls in his first three years before becoming the co-head coach for the girls in his final two
Moreno wanted to see if he was actually good at what he loved to do
so I was used to having talented squads,” he said
“This was a new challenge for me and something different
‘Am I really a good coach or do I just have a good team?’ I feel like this will give me also a reality check
Moreno isn’t focused on the numbers in the win and loss columns
His main goal in his first season of steering the girls soccer ship is to make everyone better
I want to end the season with everyone being at a level seven or a level eight or so on
the Department of Water Resources (DWR) urged people to avoid physical contact with the water at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris in Riverside County until further notice and avoid eating fish from the lake due to presence of blue-green algae
but swimming and other water-contact recreation and sporting activities are not considered safe at Moreno Beach under the danger advisory announced today due to potential adverse health effects
swimming is allowed and public should also avoid contact with algae and eating fish
The recommendation is based on the potential health risks from algal toxins
Pets can be especially susceptible because they tend to drink while in the water and lick their fur afterwards
and wind and waves may move or concentrate the bloom into different regions of the reservoir
or form foam at the surface and along the shoreline
State guidelines on cyanobacteria and harmful algal blooms recommend the following precautions be taken in waters impacted by blue-green algae:
Lake Perris is the State Water Project’s southernmost facility and the terminal storage facility on the East Branch

A better understanding of lake-calving glaciers
could improve predictions of sea level rise and other consequences of global warming
The team studied lakes at the front of three large glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonia Ice Field: Glaciar Perito Moreno, Glaciar Upsala, and Glaciar Viedma. For each glacier, the researchers used boat-mounted equipment to measure lake water temperature, sediment concentration (turbidity)
The scientists found significant differences between the behavior of these glaciers and ocean-calving ones. When a glacier ends in the sea, meltwater discharge from the glacier bed rises because it is less dense than the surrounding seawater. Warm seawater flows to the front of the glacier and promotes more melting
the scientists found that in the Patagonian lakes
turbid meltwater lingers in the depths because of its high sediment concentration
deep glacier melting is likely limited in these lakes
The measurements also revealed that the Patagonian lakes contain an upper layer of relatively warm water mixed by surface winds
which reaches to a depth of about 180 meters
delivers heat to shallower portions of the submerged glaciers
This study is the first to explore the thermal structure of glacier-fed lakes in Patagonia. Further studies are needed to clarify the processes that affect melting at the ice-water boundary of other lake-calving glaciers. died days after prosecutors said he was pushed into Lake Michigan near Navy Pier
Charges have been upgraded to murder against a woman accused of pushing her 3-year-old nephew into Lake Michigan near Navy Pier Sept
Victoria Moreno threw Josiah Brown into the water and watched as he sank below
where divers found him about 30 minutes later
Josiah was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He died Sept. 25
the Cook County medical examiner’s office said
Moreno, 34, was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a child and was ordered held without bail. The murder charges were announced Tuesday
Moreno stole the keys to the family’s truck in Des Plaines and “snuck out of the residence without anyone knowing that she had left,” prosecutors said
She was not allowed to drive the car because she takes medication for “mental health issues” and because of an incident a week earlier when she took Josiah and several other children to Navy Pier
Moreno walked several feet away and stood on the sidewalk
“doing nothing,” while passersby called 911 and threw a life preserver in the water
Moreno’s attorney disputed the claim that Moreno intentionally pushed the child into the water
and said she was standing over Josiah when he fell — “which does not necessarily preclude an accident.”
She receives treatment from two hospitals and has been on medication for seven years
which may contribute to the defendant’s inability to control her thoughts or actions
to these children who she lived with within this home with this family and to all children in general.”
Moreno again was ordered held without bail

Lady Bird Lake and Lake Austin are at an increased risk for harmful blue-green algae after the bacteria were found at the recreational shorelines along Inks Lake and Lake Marble Falls and in more locations on Lake Travis on Wednesday
which manages the Highland Lakes for hydroelectric power and flood control
is discouraging pet owners from bringing their dogs to the lakes where the algae are present
low flow through the lakes and high levels of nutrients make it more likely that the harmful algae will be present.
More: Dog owners urged in 'strongest terms possible' to avoid harmful algae detected in several Austin-area lakes
"Blue-green algae proliferate in warmer times of the year,” said Brent Bellinger
senior environmental scientist with the city of Austin
“However, the specific ranges in which they can produce toxins is still under investigation."
Bellinger said the region has had a fairly warm winter this year
despite the week of subfreezing temperatures in February
and that probably contributed to the toxins found in the Highland Lakes
"We will continue to track algae quantity and toxicity through the spring as we get ready for the summer bloom season,” he said
Austin's Watershed Protection Department observed accumulations of algae in areas of Lady Bird Lake
which is managed by the city, and will send samples to the University of Texas for testing. As a precaution
a sample was taken on Lake Austin and sent for testing last week.
The LCRA took algae samples from the five Highland Lakes
which were formed by dams along the Colorado River
and results received Wednesday found cyanotoxins
No dogs allowed: Toxic algae risk keeps Lady Bird Lake off-limits
Blue-green algae in fresh water can release neurotoxins that can be poisonous to dogs and trigger stomach problems or impair motor functions if ingested.
At least five dogs died after swimming in Lady Bird Lake in 2019
The city is recommending that dog owners be cautious about allowing their dogs in Lady Bird Lake or Lake Austin. If they allow their dogs in the water
Dog owners should take their pets to a veterinarian immediately if their dogs become sick after swimming in the lakes
The city asked that they also report the illness to 311
Symptoms of exposure may include:
• Blood in urine or dark urine.
• Photosensitization in recovering animals
and people may continue to boat and fish. Swimming has been banned in Lady Bird Lake since 1964.

that while the reconstructions of glacial dynamics up to the late-glacial are fairly well delineated
it is extremely difficult to distinguish the more recent moraines from those of the Holocene and late Pleistocene
a systematic multidisciplinary work should be done to reconstruct in greater detail the glacial dynamics of this time span
our study represents a further step to decipher the complex glacial dynamics of southern Patagonia
and highlights the key role of subaqueous glacial bedforms as signatures of the glacier imprints within lakes
Glacial and glacio-lacustrine deposits thus represent decisive records of the glacial history and paleoclimate and could help unveiling the origin of the different behavior of glaciers like the Perito Moreno which
The positioning of the collected tracks (in the WGS84 geodetic reference frame) was obtained with a D-GPS interfaced with the acquisition system
acquiring the data with an average boat speed of ca
the maximum acoustic penetration was about 120 m below the lake-floor with ca
Seismic data processing to produce the final seismic images (for profiles acquired during the 2009
Considering that the seismic surveys were performed in different periods
and that the Brazo Rico/Brazo Sur lake levels were different (higher with respect to the Canal de los Témpanos) due to the ice-damming of Perito Moreno glacier
we leveled all the profiles at the same datum of the Canal de los Témpanos and Lago Argentino
This was achieved by analyzing the difference in time at the intersections among all the seismic lines
and the obtained value was then subtracted to bring it back to the lake level of the Canal de los Témpanos
The final bathymetric map was obtained by applying the Kriging interpolation technique (with a radius of 50 m)
which considers both the distance and the degree of variation between known data points when estimating values in unknown areas
This method proved to be the best compared with the other interpolation methods
considering the sparse distribution of our profiles and the distance between the various lines acquired

CA — One of two men accused of sexually assaulting a Lake Elsinore girl over a five-year period pleaded not guilty Wednesday to child molestation
is accused with 47-year-old Oscar Moreno Martinez of assaulting the victim
identified in court documents only as "Jane Doe," on multiple occasions between 2011 and 2016
Salazar was arrested Thursday and is charged with sodomy of a child and forced oral copulation of a minor
is charged with rape of a child under 10 years old and penetration of a minor
Salazar was arraigned before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Stephen Gallon
who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Dec
17 at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta
He's being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the nearby Byrd Detention Center
An arrest warrant has been issued for his co-defendant
detectives were contacted last month about alleged sex acts perpetrated on the girl
An "extensive and rigorous investigation" ensued
culminating in sufficient evidence being gathered to obtain warrants naming the two defendants
No other details were provided regarding the investigation
or the relationship of the men to the victim
Martinez has a prior misdemeanor conviction for driving under the influence
Records show Salazar has several traffic-related convictions
but nothing more serious than that in Riverside County
Fourth-seeded Portland will host the winner of Sunday’s Eastern Conference final between the Philadelphia Union and NYCFC on Saturday
It is the first time that the Timbers have hosted the league championship
The Timbers, who won the MLS Cup in 2015
also went to the final in 2018 but fell to Atlanta United
The guys were motivated,” Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said
“They understood the moment that was at stake and they performed very well today.”
Seventh-seeded Real Salt Lake had appeared in the MLS Cup final three times
It was the team’s fifth trip to the conference finals since joining the league in 2005
Salt Lake had won all three previous playoff matches against the Timbers
including the last meeting in 2019 when RSL won 2-1 at home in the opening round
But the Timbers swept Salt Lake in their three meetings during the regular season
outscoring their opponent 12-4 in the three matches
RSL advanced to the conference final with a 2-1 victory at Sporting Kansas City
The team was undefeated in its previous four straight road matches
“I couldn’t be more proud of being a part of this group
Nobody gave us a shot when the season started
And no one gave us a shot in the playoffs either,” RSL interim coach Pablo Mastroeni said
“So to have the the mental toughness to overcome the perception of who we are
And so you can always look at things from either perspective
but I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and commitment of this group that I was able to lead.”
Mastroeni rallied RSL after he was promoted to interim coach when Freddy Juarez unexpectedly departed in August for a position with the Seattle Sounders
The Timbers downed top-seeded Colorado 1-0 on the road in the conference semifinals
Portland went up early with Mora’s goal in the fifth minute
RSL defender Aaron Herrera tried to clear the ball from out in front of the goal
The Timbers added an insurance goal in the 61st minute
Moreno’s right-footed blast from atop the penalty area hit the post then caromed off the back of RSL goalkeeper David Ochoa
“A lot of happiness,” Mora said about heading to the championship game
“We’ve done a lot of hard work this year and it was important for us to get this win.”
Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark finished with three saves in the shutout
The Timbers were without Dairon Asprilla because of a red card in the semifinal win over the Rapids
The availability of Portland’s Sebastian Blanco was uncertain because of a hamstring injury against the Rapids
Blanco has seven goals and seven assists this season
Keeping Blanco out of Saturday’s game gave him more rest before the final
“It’s definitely very important for us to be home,” Mora said about hosting the title game
So that’s going to be really important to play in the final.”
RSL saw the return of captain Albert Rusnak
who missed the past two games because of the league’s health and safety protocol

Los Glaciares National Park is located in the Southwest of Santa Cruz Province in the Argentine part of Patagonia
Comprised of a National Park and a National Reserve it has a total surface area of 600,000 hectares
Los Glaciares owes its name to the numerous glaciers covering roughly half of the World Heritage property
Many of these glaciers are fed by the massive South Patagonian Ice Field
the most extensive South American relict of the glaciological processes of the Quaternary Period
there are impressive glaciers independent of the main ice field
The property therefore constitutes a massive freshwater reservoir
Onelli and Perito Moreno Glaciers calve into the icy and milky waters of the huge Lake Argentino
The most striking sight is the famous Perito Moreno Glacier
This large glacier blocks a narrow channel formed by Lake Argentino thereby raising the water level temporarily
This in turn causes regular thunderous ruptures of the glacier tongue into the lake
Criterion (vii) : Los Glaciares National Park is embedded into the enchanted and remote mountain landscape of the Patagonian Andes shared by Argentina and Chile
Dominated by rugged granite peaks exceeding 3000 m.a.s.l
About half of the large property is covered by numerous glaciers
many of which belong to South America's largest ice field
Despite the name's focus on the impressive glaciers there is a remarkable landscape diversity encompassing a large altitudinal gradient of more than 3000 metres and very diverse ecosystems
The glaciers feed the huge mountain lakes of Viedma and Argentino
The overwhelming beauty of the landscape is epitomized where the Perito Moreno Glacier meets Lake Argentino
The vast front of the slowly and constantly moving glacier
regularly calves bluish icebergs into the waters of Lake Argentino
an audiovisual spectacle attracting visitors from all over the world
Criterion (viii) : Los Glaciares National Park is an excellent example of the significant process of glaciation
geomorphic and physiographic phenomena caused by the ongoing advance and retreat of the glaciations that took place during the Pleistocene epoch in the Quaternary period
and the neoglaciations corresponding to the current epoch or Holocene
These events have modelled – and continue to model the landscape of the area and may be recognised by the lacustrine basins of glacial origin
the moraine systems deposited on the plateaux
or by more recent systems pertaining to the current valleys
the many large glacier tongues fed by the Ice Fields of the Andes
The property also provides fertile ground for scientific research on climate change
Los Glaciares National Park is an extensive and fairly well-conserved sample of several types of Andean-Patagonian Forest
Patagonian Steppe and highly specialized high-altitude vegetation
The property provides comprehensive protection for magnificent examples of the large glaciers of Southern Patagonia
the harsh environmental conditions of the area and the very low level of atmospheric pollution contribute to the integrity of the property
contiguous national parks on the Chilean side next to Los Glaciares National Park
Los Glaciares National Park covers major glaciers and high altitude areas which are difficult to access
This natural protection and the protected area category imply a high level of permanent conservation at a relatively large scale
where the property transitions into the steppes of the lower elevations near the lakes there is a National Reserve divided into three distinct units
a "Central Zone" and "Zona Roca" to the South
Los Glaciares is situated in the Southern Andes
The World Heritage property is adjacent to the two national parks of Torres del Paine and Bernardo O'Higgins on the Chilean side
effectively forming a contiguous protected areas complex of impressive scale stretching across the border
The integrity of the property is enhanced by its associated cultural and biodiversity values
There is a large altitudinal gradient from around 200 m.a.s.l
all the way to Cerro Fitz Roy at 3,375 m.a.s.l
This magnificent peak is also known as Cerro Chaltén
based on the native Aonikenk word for "smoking mountain"
but petroglyphs and other artifacts are reminiscent of even earlier original inhabitants
towering mountains the main ecosystems are subantarctic or Magellanic forests
Sometimes also referred to as cold Patagonian forests
they are dominated by various species of Southern Beech
some of which display dramatic colours in the autumn of the Southern hemisphere
After a transitional zone of woodland and scrub
the lower elevations further east mark the beginning of the vast semiarid Patagonian steppes
Next to the peaks and glaciers there are highly specified subantarctic xerophytic cushion grasses
a rare native deer species of the Southern Andes
including important breeding populations of the emblematic Andean Condor and Darwin's Rhea
sometimes called the "South American Ostrich" and locally known as Choique
Los Glaciares National Park is far from free of human impacts
Los Glaciares National Park attracts large numbers of national and international visitors requiring careful consideration and planning of tourism
The property has an impressively long formal conservation history going back to 1937
Los Glaciares National Park is a state-owned unit of the National System of Protected Areas in Argentina (Law No
22.351 dealing with the National Park Administration)
19.292 of 1971 established the current limits
including the division of the area into a National Park and a National Reserve
Most of the territory of the Magallanes Peninsula
in which the Perito Moreno Glacier is located
is a Provincial Nature Reserve serving as a buffer zone of the property
The property has specialised administrative and technical staff and park rangers
There is also a fire brigade and support park rangers
While the Superintendence and main administrative office operates in the small town of El Calafate
there are additional units distributed across the property
The Regional Technical Office Patagonia provides professional
Management is guided by a preliminary management plan (approved in 1997 by Resolution N° 162)
It will require continuous review and updating in response to emerging demands
Los Glaciares National Park established a local Advisory Council bringing together national
the Association of Tourist Guides and a Scout Group among others stakeholders
This Council has an advisory role to the management of Los Glaciares National Park
While tourism is localized and many parts of the property can only be accessed by mountaineers and climbers there are seasonally crowded areas in the property requiring carful public use planning
The Public Use programme has been updated to fulfil the Restructuring Plan for the Moreno Glacier Sector
due to the increase in tourism and to the fact that it has the most appealing values for visitors
This restructuring included road improvements
planning of visits through a new walkway system
in order to improve the property protection and the quality of the visit
overgrazing is among the biggest human impacts
The management addresses this through agreements for the conversion of cattle‑raising farms to touristic uses
Feral cattle remain in two uninhabited areas
The latter is part of a programme to control alien invasive species
Other noteworthy introduced species include the European Hare and trout species in the lakes and streams
Forest fires have likewise had a strong impact in the past leading to the degradation and even destruction of large areas within the property
Removal of livestock and fire prevention will help restoration
The continuation and consolidation of the Research and Monitoring Programme are required
which include the project to conserve the Huemul Deer
one of the most remarkable species of the park
The latter is a longstanding project with a history of more than two decades and is conducted jointly with neighbouring Chile
works with Seven Lakes High School students in Katy
Moreno resigned from her position following a series of disagreements with school administration about content
The journalism adviser at a high school in Katy
has resigned after a prolonged conflict with school administration
which originated over how the yearbook should cover LGBTQ content
the principal also changed campus policy so that future issues of the yearbook will be subject to prior review
citing the conditions of her employment contract with the Katy Independent School District
But she consulted with the legal team at the Student Press Law Center
provided to the Tracker a 30-page document in which Moreno details her interactions with Seven Lakes principal Kerri Finnesand
“When a school district forces an award-winning journalism teacher to resign
you have to think there’s something more to the story than what school officials may be stating
Time and time again we see fearless journalism advisers teaching their students sound
but still struggling to keep a job,” Dean said
“Every adviser that is bullied out of a job and every student that is pressured into silence is a threat to free speech
I hope Seven Lakes understands the gravity of this situation.”
Moreno, who has taught at Seven Lakes since January 2014, was awarded the Journalism Education Association’s “Rising Star” award in November 2018, according to an article published by the Katy Times in January
in November 2018 she brought a yearbook page for the Pride Club
The yearbook content had never been subject to prior review before
but Moreno showed it to Finnesand out of respect for a former administrator
Finnesand wrote in an email to Moreno that the administrator's child “will not be featured in the year book with the Pride Club” and ordered her to contact the parent of every student featured “about their child’s quote and the context of the club.” Finnesand did not respond to a request for comment
Moreno drafted a permission slip for parents to sign and let the adviser of the Pride Club know about it
saying that no other clubs faced such a requirement
so it could be construed as discriminatory
When the adviser brought it up directly with Finnesand
the principal told Moreno she was being “insubordinate” by broaching the topic with the Pride Club adviser
a yearbook student sent a private message on social media
writing that the principal wanted to change the publication layout for several groups
and have the parents of all Pride Club members sign a permission slip
The student lamented that “[a]ll the work we’ve done to build these clubs
will all be excluded from the yearbook if we don’t use our voice now in whatever ways possible.” Another student reposted the message
and Moreno brought the message to Finnesand’s attention
who viewed it as a “personal attack,” according to Moreno’s documentation
Finnesand came into Moreno’s classroom and confronted her within earshot of her students
And I ‘let’ them go to social media to slander her
And because of that I don’t need to be the yearbook adviser here,” Moreno wrote
A meeting between Finnesand and Moreno’s journalism students took place on Dec
where they agreed on a plan on how to cover non-curriculum clubs in the yearbook going forward
Finnesand spoke with Moreno again where she expressed that she never has problems dealing with leaders of other organizations
wrote her interactions with Finnesand left her feeling belittled: “[d]ue to the nature of student publications
there will be times she needs to have a conversation with the adviser and with the editors
Every single time I have contacted her with a question or an update
as issues regarding censorship do not arise from service organizations or athletics.”
The print edition of the school’s newspaper
Moreno’s students dropped off a proof of the December issue for review by Finnesand on Dec
and it was returned to Moreno without any comments
The issue’s cover included an edited image of a girl surrounded by a cloud of smoke
accompanying an article about vaping titled “A Fatal Fad.” The photograph was taken using dry ice
The cover was included in the approved proof binder
Moreno was given a performance review memorandum to sign for the image appearing on the cover
Following a series of interactions with Finnesand
Moreno sent a grievance letter to Jeff Stocks
in which she outlined the communication difficulties she was having with Finnesand
At a meeting with Stocks and Finnesand on Jan
Moreno was giving a document that stated that “campus administration will approve all pages of the SLHS yearbook,” a departure from the previous policy that did not require prior review
Finnesand informed Moreno that she would not be the yearbook or newspaper sponsor next school year
after a series of meetings with a school district Human Resources representative where the future of Moreno’s teaching contract was called into question
Moreno will teach through the end of the school year
and in her resignation cited her intention to find a teaching position in another school district
told the Tracker in an email that Moreno resigned “unilaterally and voluntarily” from her job at Seven Lakes
Editor's Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly identified Jeff Stocks as superintendent of Katy Independent School District

the city of San Diego began to drain water from one of its reservoirs
which sits 50 miles east of the city in the tiny Lake Morena Village
Residents of the village were so outraged that the city was ruining their nearby lake that one woman wrote a protest song to the tune of "Summertime Blues," calling it "Lake Morena vs
"Ya' know the eagles are your symbol and we gotta protect them," it went
"We can't let them suffer or go to extinction
The mosquitoes and the mud will drown them at first
And what about the odor — our health will be the worst."
or a lawsuit the residents filed did much good
Almost a quarter-century later, the city is siphoning the water again in an attempt to curtail water rates
who boat and fish on the lake and run businesses from the recreation
Their war of words wages as the lake shrinks daily
San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob has taken up the cause as she has before
hoping her arguments about fish dying and empty firefighting helicopters might be persuasive
She briefly won a battle when then-Mayor Bob Filner agreed to stop the draining
But interim San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria took a hard line
He said the water is his city's property and he has every right to take it
it’s clear water is becoming more and more worth fighting for
The tug of war over Lake Morena shows how desperate for every drop the city has become
The plan is for the city of San Diego to withdraw 2 billion gallons from Lake Morena over about five months
lowering the lake's level by about 30 feet
When the drainage first started in early 2013
but six months later he had resigned in disgrace
only offering to stop or lessen the drawdown if the county would pay the city for Lake Morena’s water instead
Gloria said the drawdown would resume on Dec
A 1990 legal finding also says the city does not need a California Environmental Quality Act review to take water from the lake
The lake has been drained significantly multiple times, and each time there was uproar from Jacob and nearby residents
there was nothing they could do to stop it
In 1912, a dam was built on Lake Morena by a private water company, and two years later the city of San Diego bought the dam. The lake has been a city-owned reservoir — one of several not actually within San Diego’s borders — since
A tall cement tower sits in Lake Morena next to the dam
then gets inside and climbs to the bottom to open a small trap door
Heavy rains in 2004 and then the 2007 wildfires damaged the infrastructure used to move water from Barrett to Otay
which meant no water could be taken from Lake Morena
The city says the last significant drawdown of the lake was in 2001
Lake Morena Village residents might have gotten used to living next to a full lake
Once repairs were finished on the Barrett-Otay conduit
the city started moving water from Barrett to Otay to make room for Lake Morena water
the city was ready to take water from Lake Morena again
The city's argument for taking the water is simple: It's all about the money
When the city’s public utilities department presented plans in November 2013 for a water rate increase
they were assuming they would be taking water from Lake Morena
the department's external affairs deputy director
If the city loses Lake Morena as a water source
Only 15 percent of the city's water comes from Lake Morena and eight other city-owned reservoirs — the remaining 85 percent is bought from the San Diego County Water Authority
Even though such a small amount of water is coming from Lake Morena
its supply is still important because reservoir water is much cheaper than water bought from the water authority
“The water that we’d take from Lake Morena is about $5.1 million worth of water,” he said
Jacob says her biggest concern about the drawdown is over public safety
"When you reduce the water in the lake to a mud puddle
then you're reducing the ability of fire-fighting aircraft from the air to scoop up water," she said
Capt. Mike Mohler, a spokesman for Cal Fire
said he hadn't heard about the Lake Morena drawdown
There are “plenty of other water sources” nearby to make up for the lost reservoir water
Jacob warns that Lake Morena's water should be saved for emergencies
and likens the city’s water plan to its financial management
“When the city looks at the water in Lake Morena
And that's one of the big problems with the city and its finances.”
The city says not to worry, the lake will be replenished by rain. But Rebecca Schwartz, a conservationist with environmental organization San Diego Audubon Society said the region is entering another dry year “so we should not be drawing down our emergency water storage.”
Jacob is also concerned about the environmental impacts of the drawdown
She said the last time the lake was drawn down significantly
Newspaper archives show fish did die after the 2001 drawdown. But Russell Black, an environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife
the county set up an aeration system that would give fish more oxygen
He said he's not expecting a large scale fish die-off this time
there won't be larger environmental impacts
San Diego Audubon’s Schwartz says past fish kills suggest there will also be an impact to wildlife this time
Mathaey Nisso owns the Oak Shores Malt Shop
a small market and deli a short distance from the lake
As he stood at the cash register ringing up beer for fishermen and candy for kids
he said he's worried a declining number of visitors will hurt his business
people won't come here fishing because there's no water
People here are worried for their businesses because people don't come in up here."
The county parks department estimates that last year camping and fishing at Lake Morena attracted more than 100,000 visitors and generated $380,000 for the county
San Diegan Ramon Guerra and a group of young friends arrived at Lake Morena for a camping trip
packed some beers and headed out to try fishing
Guerra didn't know water was being drained from the lake
"That means less area for fishing," he said
But when Guerra found out the lake would supply some of his own drinking water
I guess I'd rather have drinking water than a fishing spot."
environmentalists warn more reservoirs could be drained
leaving all of us to choose more often whether we'd like drinking water or a fishing spot
2016Chunks of ice break off the Perito Moreno Glacier
Argentina -- Tourists in southern Argentina had the opportunity to witness a breathtaking natural phenomenon when huge chunks of the Perito Moreno Glacier broke off in front of them
The pieces of ice crashed into Lake Argentina on Thursday
prompting cheers from onlookers at Los Glaciares National Park
The massive natural monument in the province of Santa Cruz is approximately 97 square miles (250 kilometers)

In a recording played Wednesday before the jury in the Dade City courthouse, Moreno-Gonzalez, 51, could be heard confessing to murdering Diane Yeager-Lombard, 51, in May 2008. He seemed to have already reconciled the consequences.
"If I have to pay with my life," he told detectives after his arrest in 2010, "then I will pay with my life."
Prosecutor Stacey Sumner repeated the sentence in her closing arguments Thursday afternoon. After the jury deliberated for 55 minutes, Moreno-Gonzalez learned he would pay by losing a lifetime of freedom. The jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, and he was immediately sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty.
Moreno-Gonzalez had been working in Yeager-Lombard's neighborhood installing cable lines and offered to help spread dirt on her property. He developed an infatuation with Yeager-Lombard, which was rebuffed — a motive for the killing, authorities said.
The jury heard from one of Moreno-Gonzalez's co-workers, who recalled him venting his frustration with Yeager-Lombard in the days leading up to the murder. Moreno-Gonzalez said he wanted to "choke her like a . . . chicken" and mentioned wanting to use his .40-caliber handgun on her.
Neighbors would find her dead on her front porch May 4, 2008, with a .40-caliber shell casing on the walkway nearby. When investigators in Hidalgo County, Texas found Moreno-Gonzalez's abandoned Toyota Tundra at an El Tigre gas station, they found another .40-caliber shell casing beneath the front seat. Ballistics investigators testified that both had been fired from the same gun.
Defense attorney Dustin Anderson argued that data records showed Moreno-Gonzalez's cellphone was connected with a network of cell towers that meant it would have been between Louisiana and Dallas at the estimated time of the shooting, 5 p.m. May 3.
Juan Lopez, a clerk at the El Tigre convenience store in San Juan, Texas, 1,305 miles away from Yeager-Lombard's home on Bahia Loop, testified he saw the truck parked at the station at 4 p.m. May 3.
"The important part is the time line," Anderson told the jury.
The shooting could have happened at any point May 3 or even May 2, said prosecutor Manny Garcia. The jury sided with him.
Yeager-Lombard's parents sat together in the row behind the prosecution for the trial's three days. When the verdict was read, Betty Ames looked on as her husband wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Afterward, in the courthouse hallway, she clasped her hands and glanced toward the ceiling.
