You’ve called just about every sport in your career
What is it about soccer and MLS specifically that you appreciate the most
I was a boy when 1996 came around and I was there for that first inaugural season in Los Angeles
and I just fell in love with the sport and with the league even further because for the first time ever
We didn’t have to look to Mexico or Central America or Europe
I felt like we had something that belonged to us
you watched Chris Armas play for your club
What is it like now to see him and other former players still in the league
I was a boy watching him play for the Galaxy
I always wondered what happened when the Galaxy lost the first MLS Cup Final
It's crazy to believe that I still think about that first ever final between the Galaxy and D.C
United and what it meant to me as a kid from LA to lose that game and to feel that first real heartache of my team
Everyone who was on that team and everyone who was part of that first year in the league’s history
With this being the 30th season for both MLS and Colorado
how would you describe the growth that the league has seen in that span
and you can look at footage from that first year and be like
one of my all-time favorites Mauricio Cienfuegos
they were all so great.” But if you compare them to what we have now
because those guys didn't have the technology that we have today
They didn't have the research that we have today
I'm sure a lot of teams did their best to accommodate the players and the entire squad
You can see when players from other leagues come play in the United States and they tell you
I'm surprised by the stadiums and the facilities
a lot of leagues around the world don't have this.”
Colorado will secure their best start on the road through their first five away matches
how important is that for a team to have such a strong record away from home
watching from afar what's happening with Colorado and comparing this team to what they were a couple years back
it's amazing what Chris Armas and the entire staff have been able to do to turn things around and to make this club a playoff team
I don't believe that we're at the point where you have to win games
I think that's what's being built in Colorado right now as we speak
To come out of Houston with points would reaffirm that this team is doing things the right way
which is something that the rest of the league hasn't seen from Colorado in a good minute
but to put together consecutive seasons of a team that's competitive
it speaks volumes that things are truly changing for Colorado
but all you have to do is look at the standings and see teams that have been at the bottom for a very long time
Are there any Rapids players that you believe will have added impact against Houston
I feel that Rafael Navarro is the go-to guy
this is an opportunity for him to shine and to prove the quality of player that he is
I think this is an opportunity for a guy like Kévin Cabral
I think these are the games where the team is coming in on a high with a few good results under their belt
this is an opportunity for a guy like Kévin to break out and find his first goal
I think these types of games give players that opportunity
How do you see Saturday’s match playing out
I think Colorado is going to come out firing on all cylinders
They can take advantage of a Houston team that's missing key players and still hasn't truly found their footing with only one win during the season
I think Colorado is going to come out and press them to take advantage of Houston weaknesses
Based on what we see when looking at the standings
Houston is a team that is not scoring a lot of goals and is allowing a lot of goals to be scored
that brings them back to my initial point that when you look at the numbers
this is a good game for Colorado to really solidify their moment right now during the season

He claimed that he did not know who carried out the shooting but admitted to being the person on the video tapping on the vehicle windshield with a firearm

the criminal complaint indicated that Linares allegedly said that the shooting was in self-defense
Linares was subsequently charged with one count each of shooting at or from a motor vehicle

In this episode of the Medicine Grand Rounders, Dr. Roberto Simons-Linares takes a deep dive into the world of obesity management with a focus on bariatric endoscopy
you came to us with this topic for the podcast based on your work with Dr
I know you have some questions in mind to start us off
and you wanted to lead into these with a case
Anthony: Let’s use a fictional case to improve our learning
Case: This is a 57-year-old female with relevant PMH including Obesity Class III
She presents for evaluation of weight management in the Bariatric Endoscopy Clinic
Her weight at age 18 was approximately 200 lbs
With lifestyle modifications she was able to reduce her weight to 260 lbs
8 months ago she was in a motor vehicle accident where she broke her arm and injured her back; as a result
she regained lost weight and is now at her present weight of 284 lbs
She works a predominantly sedentary desk job
Her 24-hour dietary recall includes appropriate caloric and nutritional intake during the day however 2-3 nightly awakenings per week to eat
The patient also reports she could eat several high caloric meals and beverages per day despite not feeling very hungry
She also states that she does not feel full after eating several meals
Her relevant medications include insulin glargine 30 units nightly
our first question is for Roberto.....Please define obesity
Simons-Linares: Complex medical disease not just a cosmetic disease
We must have a shift in our medical focus to recognize obesity as a disease
just as we recognize diabetes or hypertension diseases with nuances
or III where BMI is used to stratify 30-34.9; 35-39.9; 40+
Arjun: There are many treatment options available for obesity
I counsel them on the importance of lifestyle modifications
patients hear about many medications in the media and their sensational claims associated with weight loss and come to me asking about prescribing these medications
Can you describe how much expected weight loss someone would have with lifestyle modifications and with some common anti-obesity medications
Simons-Linares: Lifestyle modifications: LookAHEAD Trial with intensive coaching
psychology – in 10 years trial was prematurely stopped
Patients only lost 6% and it did not improve cardiovascular risk factors or cardiovascular mortality
the patient is not interested in endoscopic therapy or bariatric surgery
What evidence-based steps would we take at her first clinic visit to give her the best chance for an optimal outcome in her weight loss journey
Simons-Linares: Identify her subtype of obesity (hungry brain
she would benefit from an uptitration of her semaglutide as well as the addition of topiramate 25mg nightly to curb the feelings of nocturnal eating
Meet with Bariatric Psychologist & Bariatric Dietician
what does that first meeting with a patient look like
What are some key discussion points or information that you use to help patients
Erika: I use the first visit to emphasize the chronic disease model of obesity as well as the emphasize the nature of our program as being a “medical home” model of care
we will continue to support the patient for chronic disease management across the lifespan- knowing that weight gain is something we have to accept about the disease itself
The rest of the visit is a pretty thorough interview covering a broad range of the individual's experience
I like to describe it to patients as “looking at the places stress tends to hide” because ultimately
we need a broad picture of how the patient has built habits as the solutions to other problems they have experienced in various areas of life
I can share with the patient some opportunities to fill in the gaps- either with resources
or things we want to monitor to prepare for any kind of procedure
this patient’s nocturnal eating will limit her goals for weight loss
patients have relief from medications to treat this pattern and in other cases they need support in improving sleep hygiene
and self-observations skills to make sustainable changes
the incident of injury or illness is something that can often catch us off guard- and unfortunately can be a common contributing factor to weight gain
I would want to be involved in the patients care for supporting how they adjust to these types of changes (aka stressors)
how do you help patients in their weight loss journey
but why should patients see a dietitian in their weight loss process
Bailey: There is so much nutrition and diet information out there nowadays with more social media use and the increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide
it is crucial for them to receive medically appropriate nutrition advice for their treatment and as registered dietitians we are trained to use evidence-based research and guidelines to do this
Our goal for any patient working with myself or any dietitian in our program is to work with them to establish a strong nutrition foundation and habits that are going to aid in their treatment with endoscopic therapies in combination with other lifestyle modifications
so it is important to work with our patients to form these lifelong nutrition habits that meet our recommendations but at the same time fit into their needs and life as well
Anthony: The patient trials both of these things and returns to see Dr
which represents a 7% total body weight loss during that time
she now is interested in learning about endoscopic approaches for weight loss
What is bariatric endoscopy and how does it differ from other bariatric procedures
What is the role of bariatric endoscopy in treating obesity
Simons-Linares: Phenotypes are hungry brain
Procedures can be Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty; intragastric balloon
Anthony: The patient ultimately elects to proceed with endoscopic surgery
What does her post-procedural life look like
Does she stop all anti-obesity medications
Should she follow-up with the bariatric endoscopy team
thank you so much for your wonderful discussion
can you give the listeners especially those in training and those in primary care
some key summary take-home points from today’s episode

All it takes is one punch to spoil a good night
Devin Haney's Saturday night was going perfectly until Jorge Linares caught him with a big right hand in the 10th round
the biggest test of Haney's career became significantly tougher
surviving a furious rally by the veteran Linares to pick up a unanimous decision victory -- 116-112
115-113 -- and retain his WBC lightweight title in Las Vegas
But the final six minutes and the fan reaction following his victory showed the dilemma Haney faces in his budding career
Even on a night when he did everything he could to show he was an exciting fighter worthy of the biggest matchups
Haney received a mixed reaction of boos and cheers
15 KOs) was dominating Linares up until the final seconds of the 10th round
29 KOs) wobbled Haney with a straight right hand
The champion walked on shaky legs back to his corner while Linares swung his arms to the side to make sure Haney knew where he was headed
That type of punch was almost inevitable given Haney's approach against the former champion
he defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa in a unanimous decision that was both dominating and relatively unexciting
Haney opted to stand in front of the 35-year-old Linares
who still carried significant power and looked to throw power punches at the risk of getting caught with a big strike
"That's what the fans wanted to see -- if I could go in there and walk my opponent down and hit him with him some big shots," Haney said in the postfight interview on DAZN
He spent the beginning of the 11th round trying to regain his footing
He held on to Linares and smothered the late rally
which the crowd booed with increasing ferocity over the final two rounds
Haney lunged in from a distance to wrap Linares up
a signal that Haney was more than ready for the fight to be over
It was the type of finish that made onlookers forget the risks he took in the first nine rounds to put on the type of show to boost his career
the 22-year-old Haney complained that other young stars in the division -- names such as Teofimo Lopez and Ryan Garcia -- were not willing to fight him
After Garcia beat Luke Campbell earlier this year
Garcia didn't mention Haney as a potential opponent in his postfight interview even though it made logical sense
it could create more pressure for other fighters to face the WBC champion and grow a fan base in a crowded division
"The special fighters make a statement," Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said in a DAZN interview a week before Saturday's bout
"And if [Haney] can make a statement against Jorge Linares next week
it makes my job a lot easier with the broadcasters
'We want Lopez against Haney; we want Haney against Garcia.'"
It was the exact performance he was looking for
But the finish might have undone all of his good work
Haney acknowledged how the deck might be stacked against him
Unlike former unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko
Haney didn't go down when he was hit with Linares' best shot
Garcia overcame an early knockdown to defeat Campbell via TKO
Yet the vulnerability Haney showed against Linares could be counted against him
"We saw other fighters in the lightweight division get dropped," Haney said to DAZN
he escaped the Linares fight with his undefeated record and WBC belt intact
Haney said he still wants a bout against Lopez (16-0
who holds the other three major belts in the 135-pound division
Haney said he believed he made the statement he was looking for on Saturday night
That might depend on what fans remember the most from his victory over Linares

The Academy prospects remain in promotion play-off positions
Everything changed for Mirna Linares the day in early 2017 when three members of MS-13 came to her house and told her husband that
the violent gang had been harassing the family because of her husband’s political activities
Two of his brothers had been killed for this reason.
Mirna went to the police station to ask for protection
she ensured the threat would be carried out and that they could not help her
Mirna and her husband took their three daughters and started the difficult journey north to the U.S
Mirna and her family are among the many thousands of people from El Salvador forced to leave home to seek protection each year. From 2012 to 2017, the number of El Salvadorans seeking asylum in the United States grew by 1,000 percent
The country is largely controlled by violent gangs and has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
“We had to leave with the clothes we had on,” Mirna told Refugees International
“The only solution was to go as far as possible and reach the United States.”
But when Mirna and her family presented themselves at the border
agent told them they could not be received
the family crossed the Rio Grande to El Paso
and Mirna and her daughters were separated from her husband.
law does not allow for the prolonged detention of migrant children
even if they arrive accompanied by a parent
DHS can separate the family in order to keep one of the parents detained while releasing the children with the other.
Officers asked Mirna if she had family in the United States
and she told them she had a sister in Colorado. After a few nights in custody
Mirna and the girls were released to Annunciation House
a shelter where they were given beds for the night, hot meals
Mirna made arrangements to travel to Colorado
where the family would pursue their asylum case in immigration court.
But he remained detained for three more months
What do you do if you’re alone with your daughters
“But I started to feel like… I know my husband isn’t here
An immigration judge at Otero eventually granted Mirna’s husband release on bond so that he could join the family in Colorado. Mirna
and their three children rebuilt their lives together
where her daughters received the support they needed and began to thrive
Mirna and her husband are working steadily and have bought their own home.
Asylum seekers like Mirna and her family contribute to U.S
communities in countless ways when given the chance.
“I’d like to learn English to the fullest,” Mirna told Refugees International
And my dream is to help my daughters strive forward and fulfill their dreams.”
Mirna hopes future asylum-seeking families like hers will never have to suffer cruel treatment and the pain of separation
The Biden administration must allow people to seek protection at ports of entry rather than turn them away
It must end all policies that separate families and unnecessarily detain people seeking asylum
The United States can receive people arriving at the border in search of protection with decency and respect and provide them a fair chance to make their case.

I am asked (and I sometimes ask myself) the question: why am I here
that a foreigner should chose Linares as his adopted home when many millions of Mexicans dream of living in the United States
They listen to my stock responses with polite interest
but something in the way they look at me implies the unstated question
translator and educator raised in the pretty little rural Irish Midlands town of Lanesboro
international students or the odd technician flown in for the weekend to fix some infernal machine at Kellogg’s or at one of the other factories inside the parque industrial (industrial park) at the entrance to town
bank robber or deviant on the run from my sordid past
Linares is not the Mexico of the tourist brochures
Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos — places designed for well-heeled outsiders seeking refuge from the harsh blasts of winter—Linares has no golden beaches
Nestled in Nuevo León’s Citrus Belt in the blue shadow of the Sierra Madres
Linares is largely known — if at all — for the norteño music of the legendary Los Cadetes de Linares
a traditional gourmet candy made from nuts and burnt goat’s milk
slightly dilapidated city of 80,000 souls seemingly by accident
Fleeing from the Canadian winter in February 2001
I was backpacking around Central America and the Pacific coast of southern Mexico when a friend and resident here invited me to pay him a visit while he did fieldwork for his doctorate
I headed north to the India-shaped state of Nuevo León
I stepped into the dusty sunlight and looked up into a sky so clear and blue I could hardly credit it
As I sat in the calm green shade of Linares Plaza
sun-weathered old campesinos (farmers) wearing white cowboy hats
I felt a sudden intense sensation akin to déjà vu
I was reading the news in a cybercafe when a woman approached and invited me to interview for the position of English teacher at a prestigious local school
a young English teacher named Verónica Garza Flores interpreted
We have been married 18 years now and have two beautiful little girls
I would be happy anywhere as long as I was with them
there are many other reasons why I enjoy living here
The average temperature in Linares is 22.4 C
seasonally deepened by Irish rain and Canadian snow
it was a delight to discover that the regular sunshine here is a natural mood enhancer
spiking my system with daily doses of serotonin
The pace of life is slower — more in sync with agrarian rhythms than factory clocks — which for a country boy like me is familiar and therefore comforting — and Mondays are less stressful
Unlike border cities such as Reynosa or Tijuana
where homicide rates are among the highest in the world
crime in Linares is more of the unorganized type — petty theft
drug abuse and drink-fuelled social violence
Apart from a rash of drug-related killings between 2006 and 2010
Houston and Vancouver are much more dangerous places in which to live
The food in Linares is also excellent and comes in a diverse variety of shapes
Among the most popular local dishes are cabrito (kid goat)
tomato and onions stuffed into small red tortillas and served with cube-shaped fried potatoes
Other popular treats to be found in the local markets are queso del rancho (homemade cheese)
When I’m feeling in the mood for a little sweet bread to go at with my coffee
I tend to visit the famous local bakery in the center of town
the only other reference to the city I know of is to “the snow-capped peaks of Linares” in Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur (Linares lies in a valley
the author was known to go on the odd extended drug-and-booze-addled bender.)
other than the odd brief text in a travel book
you would be hard-pressed to find much written about Linares in Spanish either
I view this as an advantage because I am not unduly influenced by other scribblers when contemplating the history and culture of the city
As for art — or what passes for art in these parts — I am more partial to the work of storefront painters than the pretentious and gaudy religious-themed paintings of the local (con-)artistes
My daily round here during these dangerous days of COVID-19 consists of giving classes; reading; jogging; overeating; writing poems
articles and personal essays; conducting interviews and watching my beloved soccer team FC Bayern Munich in the comfort of Bar el Dáil — my private Irish pub
We are also constantly improving and upgrading our house
which involves dealing with workmen and making frequent trips to the hardware store for building materials
Our daughters take karate classes three times a week
we visit the neighboring town of Hualahuises to bathe in its clear
cold rivers and feast on the exquisite local cuisine
Despite the passage of 20 years and the inescapable facts of debts
work problems and other quotidian universal stresses
Linares remains a serendipitous refuge — strange enough to me still that I maintain the illusion that I am somehow on vacation
somewhere not “at home,” wherever that is anymore
I miss many things about Lanesboro and Toronto
but as long as I continue to avoid the dreaded sensation of becoming stuck in a rut
I could quickly elaborate a list of drawbacks to living here too
but show me the person who from time to time doesn’t wish they were elsewhere

NEW YORK -- Pound-for-pound king and junior lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko entered the Madison Square Garden ring on Saturday night aiming to carve out yet another piece of boxing history. Now history is his once again.
Lomachenko survived a sixth-round knockdown and a very tough fight to score a 10th-round technical knockout of Jorge Linares on a body shot to take the lightweight world championship before 10,429 in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card.
With the victory, Lomachenko shattered the all-time boxing record for fewest fights needed to win a world title in three weight divisions, accomplishing that in just his 12th fight.
Lomachenko broke the record held by Australian legend Jeff Fenech, a Hall of Famer who won world titles at bantamweight and junior featherweight before winning a belt at featherweight in his 20th fight in 1988.
In his third pro fight, Lomachenko toyed with Gary Russell Jr. to win a decision and featherweight world title, which allowed him to tie the record for fewest fights needed to claim a world title.
In his seventh fight, Lomachenko moved up to junior lightweight and scored a massive fifth-round knockout of Roman "Rocky" Martinez to take his belt and set the record for fewest fights needed to win a world title in two weight classes.
Now Lomachenko (11-1, 9 KOs), who made all four of his 130-pound title challengers -- Nicholas Walters, Jason Sosa, Miguel Marriaga and Guillermo Rigondeaux -- quit, moved up to 135 pounds and seized the title from Linares (44-4, 27 KOs), considered the No. 1 lightweight in the world going into the fight.
"It was a great fight. That right hand [that knocked me down], it was a great punch. It happens," Lomachenko said. "I prepared for the last few rounds, and my father [and trainer Anatoly Lomachenko] told me, 'You need to go to the body.'
"Linares is a great champion, and the fight was good for the fans and everybody."
Said Linares: "The knockout punch was perfectly landed."
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who promotes Lomachenko, gave credit to both fighters.
"I thought the fight showed Linares is a helluva fighter, and Loma just stayed in there and knocked him out with a body shot," Arum said. "He established himself as a great fighter. He has a fighting heart."
Linares, who has also won world titles at featherweight and junior lightweight, towered over the smaller Lomachenko and got his jab going in the opening round. He landed a couple of right hands to give Lomachenko something to think about. It had been a long time since an opponent had been remotely competitive against him in even a single round.
In the second round, Linares, 32, a Venezuela native fighting out of Las Vegas, landed a hard body shot and an uppercut, but Lomachenko immediately responded with a left hand that got the crowd excited as it began to chant, "Loma! Loma! Loma!" He closed with a good flurry to force Linares back.
Lomachenko's advantage in hand speed was evident in the third round as he peppered Linares with quick punches on the inside and then spun away before he could fire back.
By the fourth round, Linares' right eye began to swell. He has had issues with cuts and swelling in the past, and there is a lot of scar tissue over his eye.
Linares, who was making the fourth defense of his second lightweight title reign, got a warning for a low blow from referee Ricky Gonzalez in the fifth round, and then Lomachenko rocked him with a left hook seconds before the bell. Linares took a second warning for a low blow in the sixth round.
Lomachenko, a 30-year-old southpaw, appeared to be winning yet another round in the sixth when Linares landed a clean straight right hand down the middle that knocked him to his rear end, but the round was coming to an end, and he could not get off another punch. It was the first time Lomachenko had ever been knocked down.
"At first I thought it was a slip, but when I saw it again [on the replay], he got hit right on the kisser," Arum said. "I knew he was going to get up, but it was a legitimate good shot he got hit with."
Linares didn't go right after Lomachenko in the seventh to see if he had shaken off the knockdown, but it appeared Lomachenko recovered quickly and got back into a groove of firing punches and stepping to the side to get out of the way of Linares' return shots.
They continued to battle back and forth even as Linares' face continued to look worse and worse. Lomachenko rocked him with an uppercut midway through the 10th round, but Linares continued to come at Lomachenko, who made him pay dearly.
Later in the 10th, Lomachenko unleashed a series of punches that sent Linares backward toward the ropes before a left hand to the body dropped him to a knee. He beat the count, but Gonzalez didn't like how he looked and stopped the fight at 2 minutes, 8 seconds, setting off a wild celebration in the arena from the pro-Lomachenko crowd.
"He didn't surprise me as I thought he was going to surprise me," Linares said. "The fight was getting interesting. It was very close, but he did surprise me with that body shot. I wanted to continue. I wanted to keep working, but the ref stopped the fight."
At the time of the stoppage, Lomachenko was up 86-84 on judge Steve Weisfeld's scorecard, Linares was up by the same score on Robin Taylor's card, and Julie Lederman had it 85-85.
The fight was made thanks to the desire of both fighters to face each other and the cooperation between Lomachenko promoter Top Rank and Linares' co-promoter, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. They've had a bitter rivalry for years but managed to come together to give fans the best fight that could be made in the division.
"Oscar said congratulations, great fight, and it was good to work with you," Arum said.
According to CompuBox punch statistics, Lomachenko landed 213 of 627 punches (34 percent), and Linares stayed right with him, landing 207 of 739 blows (28 percent).
Arum said Lomachenko will return to headline another Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card on Aug. 25 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Before Saturday's fight, Lomachenko said he would remain at lightweight and give up his junior lightweight world title. If he sticks to his plan, he probably will face Raymundo Beltran in a lightweight world title unification fight. Beltran (35-7-1, 21 KOs) won a vacant title in February.
"Beltran is the obvious opponent," Arum said.
Lomachenko will be a big favorite against Beltran, as he has been against all of his opponents. But while his talent has never been questioned, one question lingered: What would happen when Lomachenko faced adversity? He answered in resounding fashion by getting off the deck to win against the best opponent he had ever faced.
"We always knew what a great talent he is, but he showed he's a real fighter against the best guy he ever fought, a much bigger guy who knows how to fight, who was not going to quit and who was going to go out on his shield," Arum said. "Loma stood up to him and showed what he has deep down in his guts."
