The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) on Tuesday handed a six-year ban to an unnamed Liga MX Femenil player from Mazatlán FC after an investigation into alleged match-fixing
The FMF said the alleged offense took place during the ongoing Clausura tournament
which took place between January and April
"The Disciplinary Committee of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) reports that it conducted a detailed investigation into the possible fixing of matches corresponding to the 2025 Clausura tournament of the Liga BBVA MX Femenil by players of Club Mazatlán FC," the federation said in a statement on Tuesday
"After reviewing the evidence and granting the right to a hearing to those involved

An unnamed Mazatlán player was given a six-year ban for match-fixing. Imago7Due to the severity of the sanction
the FMF also noted that the case's information would be forwarded to FIFA
The investigation began after Mazatlán players were accused of fixing a 7-0 loss to Tigres in March
Mazatlán allowed a goal within the first 63 seconds of the away game
the Liga MX Femenil side finished third-to-last at 16th place and finished with the worst goal differential (-45) of the campaign
Mazatlán noted in a statement that the club "recognizes and supports the sanction imposed by the Disciplinary Committee of the Mexican Football Federation."

A viral video showing an encounter between a homeowner and a construction worker in Mazatlán has escalated into public protests and a heated debate over urban tensions
misinformation and the power of social media
initially described as a case of a gringo (American) harassing a Mexican laborer
is a lifelong Mazatlán local — a Mazatleco — not an American
What happened earlier this week reportedly was this: Lizárraga
eating lunch on a public sidewalk outside his home
to move because they were blocking his entrance and garage
He said his house is on Cruz Lizárraga Avenue, a well-known street one block from the beach named not for him but for clarinetist Don Cruz Lizárraga, the founder of the famous music group Banda El Recodo
Being built right there, near the intersection with Hamm Street, is Stelarhe, a luxury residential complex of two 30-floor towers offering ocean views and high-end amenities
“All I asked of the workers who were blocking the entrance to my home on Monday was that they move to another side to clear the way,” Lizárraga told Noroeste in a phone interview
and my family has been here for generations.”
A video of the encounter was shared by a bystander who believed Lizárraga was a foreigner and labeled him as such
with users accusing him of racism and classism and the harassment of a Mexican citizen in his own territory
On Wednesday, dozens of protesters gathered outside Lizárraga’s home, chanting, waving Mexican flags, throwing eggs and banging on his doors, while passing cars honked in support. The rhythm of the song “Por Mi México” blared in the background
they’re destroying my garage doors,” Lizárraga recounted as the protest unfolded
no police intervened until after damage was done
adding that his wife called authorities out of concern for their safety
Lizárraga explained that the ongoing construction of the tower has brought daily disruptions for years
noise and debris — a common experience for Mexicans in many urban locations
made especially irritating when the construction is being driven by tourism and creating more rental units for foreigners
— Sonora Visión Noticias (@SVNNoticias) April 24, 2025
between 15 and 20 people come here to eat on average daily … I have no problem with that
… What I do have a problem with is when … they block the garage and they block the entrance door.”
described feeling “attacked” but said he did not wish to escalate the situation
voiced anger at what they perceived as disrespect toward local workers
The episode has reignited debates over gentrification, urban development and the impact of tourism-driven construction
which many locals feel has eroded community cohesion and strained public spaces
eventually confirmed Lizárraga’s local status — a day or two after the incident — and cautioned against mob justice fueled by social media rumors
“It’s hard to imagine that a lie can have such a reach,” Lizárraga said
Although this incident proved to not involve a foreigner, gringo-versus-locals incidents are not uncommon in Mazatlán, a Sinaloa port city of 442,000
About a year ago, a video sparked a fiery debate between people supporting the right of musicians to play loud banda music on or near the beach and backers of an anti-noise ordinance
Those seeking to prohibit such music included hotel owners
business leaders and politicians — allegedly in an attempt to cater to the desires of tourists and non-Mexican residents

The Mazatlán Carnival — especially important this year as the city attempts to revive its tourism economy — has been rocked by two prominent regional Mexican music acts cancelling performances due to narco threats
One of Mexico’s biggest celebrations of its kind, Carnival 2025 opened Thursday and runs through Tuesday in Mazatlán, the state of Sinaloa’s largest city behind the oft-narco-ravaged capital of Culiacán.
singers Jorge Medina (who was born in Mazatlán) and Josi Cuen also canceled their performance
While they didn’t explicitly mention threats
the timing raised suspicions of a connection — and highlighted the growing influence of drug cartels on the music industry
In January, Mexican corridos tumbados singer Natanael Cano received threats on a narco banner hung outside a high school in Hermosillo
Allegedly placed by the Los Mata Salas criminal group
the banners accused Cano and two other music stars of supporting a rival gang
Peso Pluma, another huge star of corridos tumbados and narcocorridos — music that often glorifies the exploits of cartels, outlaws and criminal kingpins and forgives violence against women — canceled several concerts in 2023 after receiving death threats
including one written on a narco banner in Tijuana that used the signature “CJNG” for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel
To replace the seven-member Grupo Firme — a Latin Grammy winner in 2021 for best banda album — in Mazatlán on Saturday night
Their concert of regional Mexican music — mariachi
ranchera and norteño — will be headlined by nine-time Grammy and Latin Grammy award winner Pepe Aguilar along with his daughter Ángela and son Leonardo
themselves recording stars with several Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations between them
(Perhaps this show will make up for their scheduled “Grito de Independencia” performance last September in Culiacán, which was canceled due to a violent cartel turf war in the city at that time.)
Scheduled to fill in for Medina and Cuen on Thursday night was an act of former Mexican stars billed as ’90s Pop Tour
who have teamed up on a tour titled Juntos (Together)
are both former lead singers of the successful grupera band La Arrolladora Banda El Limón
which started in the Sinaloa town of El Limón de los Peraza
Other scheduled performers at this year’s Mazatlán Carnival — iconic opera singer Plácido Domingo
22-time Latin Grammy Award winner Alejandro Sanz and three-decade norteño favorites La Adictiva from Sinaloa — remained in the lineup
As for the narco threats against the musicians
the Mazatlán threats are part of a growing trend of cartel intimidation targeting regional Mexican musicians
I think the government is losing control of this situation,” singer Julio Preciado said in the online newspaper Infobae
“I don’t know where we are going with this
Some say the threats have effectively given cartels power to curate festival and concert lineups, with the states of Baja California, Sinaloa and Jalisco being hotspots for this phenomenon. Some cities, like Tijuana, have attempted to address the issue by banning narcocorridos in public shows

Less than a month out from one of Mexico’s largest Carnival celebrations
is seeking to reactivate its tourism economy with a new campaign called “A Sea of Stories.” Tourism in the beach town has declined sharply as the state faces a security crisis
The campaign, which will be launched in Mexico and abroad, aims to promote Mazatlán as a destination for sporting events, business meetings, weddings, fishing tournaments and more. Notable events held in the resort city include the Mazatlán International Carnival
the Delfino Maza Surfing Tournament and the Polanco Jazz Festival
The head of the Tres Islas Hotel Association
which he said might be the turning point the city needs
Sinaloa, located on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, is currently going through a security crisis that began in September after the arrest of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. The arrest kicked off a feud between factions within the cartel
that has impacted the lives of residents and the local economy
“We’re collaborating with the security committees
the federal government and the private sector,” Manguart said
“Carnival represents a great opportunity for Mazatlán
Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora stressed the federal government’s commitment to support Sinaloa and assured that these actions are aligned with the national goal of “shared prosperity.”
“Mazatlán is much more than a tourist destination
It is a place where each visitor can immerse themselves in an ocean of unique and memorable experiences,” she said
is currently going through a security crisis
According to the Employers’ Confederation of Mexico (Coparmex)
violence has resulted in economic losses for the state amounting to 18 billion pesos (US $875 million)
For many residents of Mazatlán, especially those reliant on the tourism sector, the late February Carnival festivities present a vital chance to lift the local economy after the outbreak of violence that began September last year. An internal struggle within the Sinaloa Cartel has led to murders
confrontations between armed groups and the army
carjackings and kidnappings across the state
The state capital of Culiacán has been especially hard-hit by the conflict
with the restaurant and event industries greatly affected by insecurity
While Mazatlán has seen less action in the cartel war than some areas
tourism has dropped steeply since the conflict began
Businesses and residents who depend on the tourism industry hope this year’s Carnival will turn the economic tide

The new regulations will allow structures of up to 30 floors

these projects are expected to create 1,000 new jobs in Mazatlán

The Philadelphia Union defeated Mazatlán FC on a penalty shootout
The Union will now advance the Semi-Finals in the Leagues Cup for a second consecutive year
They will face Columbus Crew who also win via Shootout following a 1-1 regulation tie with NYCFC
it was not until being reduced to 10 men at the end of the first half that the Union took the lead
Forward Tai Baribo was adjudged to have committed two fouls in as many minutes
Jack McGlynn’s lovely through ball put Mikael Uhre in on net
Mazatlán really began to apply the pressure
They equalized from an attacking set piece and late in the second half
Following the conclusion of second-half stoppage time
the game immediately went to a penalty shootout
The Union were able to dispatch Mazatlán in the shootout
with Andre Blake making two saves and Jesus Bueno scoring the winning penalty
The first real chance of the game came to Philadelphia
Quinn Sullivan played Uhre into the final third
Uhre’s cutback pass is weakly cleared by a defender and went right to the onrushing Sullivan who takes a powerful shot from a tight angle which rippled the side netting on the outside of the goal
Mazlatan struggled to maintain possession in the opening ten minutes
and the Union looked better in the early stages of the match
McGlynn and Gazdag combined for a lovely sequence of passes deep in their defensive third to get out of pressure
much to the pleasure of the nearest supporters’ sections
Los Canoneros grew into the game and began to create attacks
Mazlatan had found space in the width of the pitch and started attacking down the wings but every cross they sent in was cleared away by a Union defender
Jack Elliot had to slide to make a good block on a Mazatlán winger who was looking to square a dangerous ball across the six in the 15th minute
Andre Blake had to make a fantastic one-handed diving save
Arciga had space at the top of the box and rocketed a shot towards goal but Blake got his fingertips to it
a dangerous ball was headed across his net but again Blake stood tall and claimed it
Arciga was involved in the play again but this time for the wrong reasons
fouling the German defender and drawing the ire of the crowd
No card was issued but it marked the start of the chippiness that can so often accompany these inter-continental matchups
After a period of Union turnovers that saw Mazatlán dominate possession
the first coherent Union attack in a while came in the 38th minute
A McGlynn dime found Sullivans who laid it off to Uhre who was able to win a corner
a scuffle in the box between Baribo and a Mazatlán defender led to the Israeli striker being carded
the ball was cleared away for another corner
Again Baribo and a defender came together but this time the referee went to his back pocket and showed a straight red card to Baribo
After a minute or two the referee went to the VAR monitor to review
Head Referee Selvin Chavarria waved off the red card and instead issued a yellow card
still sending Baribo off due to it being his second yellow card
the Union would get almost instant catharsis
Uhre isolated his defender just across the halfway line
played a lovely ball that sent Uhre in behind
he chipped Ricardo Guiterrez and the ball bounced in off the far post
giving the Union a 1-0 lead three minutes into first-half stoppage time
An exciting end-to-end start marked the beginning of the second frame of action
Wagner barely managed to clear away a dangerous Mazatlán squared ball in the Union box
His clearance found Sullivan who played an outrageous outside-of-the-foot-pass that split the Mazatlán center backs and put Uhre through on goal
The Dane tried to round Gutierrez but didn’t get the angle right and his chance went begging
After a period of back-and-forth possession with no notable action
Uhre got in behind the Mazatlán defense again
This time it was direct from a long Jack Elliot pass
the script was suddenly flipped on the Union
Mazatlán won the ball and counter-attacked themselves while the 10-man Union were still out of position
A retreating Glesnes did enough to slow down the ball carrier but he was adjudged to have committed a foul and was duly booked in the 58th minute
the ball was played out wide to an unmarked Arciga
the cross came into the box and Alonso Escoboza headed home past Blake to tie the score in the 59th
Head Coach Jim Curtin turned to his bench in the 66th minute
making a triple change by sending on Damion Lowe
These changes also seemed to signify a formation change to a 5-3-1 with Gazdag now operating as the sole Center Forward
Mazatlán had the majority of the changes down the stretch
which is understandable given Tai Baribo’s red card and Curtin’s decision to bunker up
A defensive miscommunication nearly spelled disaster for the Union in the 86th minute
A Mazatlán cross swung in and while Blake moved to collect
Lowe jumped and cleared it out for a corner
The resulting corner led to a flurry of chances for Mazatlán that the Union barely survived
a Mazatlán header hit the crossbar and was cleared away by Elliot
Mazatlán kept the ball and got off a few more vicious shots that were all well blocked by the Union defense
who is expected to leave the club in this transfer window
Blake stood tall and dove the right way on the first Mazatlán PK
Martinez stepped up to take the first Union penalty
his stuttered run-up froze the keeper and he smashed his shot home
Mazatlán scored their next shot but so did Elliot
giving the Union a massive advantage in the shootout
Damion Lowe also employed a stutter step run-up
Even though Mazatlán scored their next take
Blake guessed the right way but was unable to stop the shot
and slotted it home past the diving Gutierrez
Another bad refereeing performance — The Barbio double red card feels like a Mark Geiger decision that would have been discussed on MLS’s Instant Replay 10 years ago
It was a ridiculous sequence and yet another chapter in some of the terrible refereeing decisions made in the Leagues Cup
Being a referee at any level is a hard job
but with all the tools these officials have in this competition
this kind of decision is bizarre- no matter which team bears its ill effects
and losing the player who’s been their talisman over the team’s recent winning streak
Jose’s swan song — With an imminent transfer to Corinthians seemingly in the final stages
it was something of a surprise that the Venezuelan was able to dress for this match
Despite only getting subbed on in 2nd half stoppage time
Martinez made his presence felt by scoring the first PK for the Union in the shootout
45 + 1’ 2nd Yellow Card – Tai Baribo
45 + 3’ Goal – Mikael Uhre (Jack McGlynn)
45 + 9’ Yellow Card – Edgar Barcenas
59′ Goal – Alonso Escoboza (Ramiro Arciga)
Head Referee: Selvin Antonio Brown Chavarria
Watched this jawn up in Canada under the table at dinner
Then my wife made me get off the floor so I just held the phone low
Thought for sure the fix was in when Tai got sent off but dang if we didnt score
A nice guts win that I hope pays off later in the season
Would have liked to see Gazdag get back on that horse
Thought the U wasnt allowed to win on days the Phils win
but glad to see they didnt get the memo…
But credit to the fans who made the tifo for him
I got home in time to watch the match on Crapple last night
1) It is impossible to overstate Andre Blake’s importance to this team
Someone who is nerdier than I could probably look up the results of all matches both with Dre and without him during his tenure with the Union and report those results to us
We have seen a microcosm of that this year: Everyone plays better when he is in goal
2) I am sorry I was not there to wish El Brujo adios in person
I am glad he was honored by taking the first PK of the night
He is the grittiest player the Union have had in their tenure
we can welcome him back when there is a full house and we can truly show our appreciation for all that he has meant to this team
3) Selvin Brown is not qualified to referee youth soccer
I knew it was going to be a difficult night when in the 25th minute or so
Mazatlan’s player was allowed to get away with a nasty late challenge on Wagner with no yellow card
the foul seemed designed to incite retaliation
Tai Baribo can be seen asking Brown why there was no yellow card
would probably have resulted in less fouls in the game
4) I took a quick look at the rules for yellow card accumulation in Leagues Cup because I was curious why Mazatlan
which led Leagues Cup in the total number of both fouls and yellow cards
would engage in so many challenges that risked yellow cards
The answer is that yellow card accumulation was reset before the quarterfinals
in Columbus–they are going to need all the luck it to score without Tai Baribo
I agree Leno is a homer but in this case I think he was correct- those yellows to Tai were suspect
Columbus entered in the round of 16 in the CCC
so they only played 3 more CCC games than we did
plus they missed the group stage of Leagues Cup and have only played 23 league games
that means we’ve actually played 1 more game this season than they have (0 if you count their friendly against Aston Villa)
rescheduling the league game will be tough
I forgot that they entered both tournaments later
Definitely some moments in 2nd half were they turned off and had some poor passes but they did just enough
Thought Curtin’s move to make 3 defensive subs to sure up the defense so they didn’t lose outright and could get to penalties was an astute read of the situation- something we don’t always see from him
I actually didn’t like that move from Jim at all
He left us with one non-striker playing up top
virtually insuring that we would be unable to score on a counterattack
I wanted him to bring in Adineran earlier rather than Lowe
but we were fortunate that Blake did better on PKs than he usually does
I had the same initial reaction but then realized I was just waiting for Mazatlan to score
I think Jim saw it was more likely they would score than us
and coming back from down a goal would have been tough
next Saturday’s game against Columbus has been pushed back to the following Wednesday (8/28) which means it is not during an international break and both teams will be playing on the same amount of rest (although it will be a short rest for the New Jersey game the following Saturday)

While the Sinaloa government vaunted the party, the tension between Mexico and the Trump administration in the United States grew. Three months into his second term, Trump has placed tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, blaming them for the deadly fentanyl overdose crisis in the U.S. — the same fentanyl that has been found in Sinaloa narco-laboratories
On top of that, the Trump administration designated the Sinaloa Cartel and five other Mexican cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations.” Adding to the tension, on Feb. 4 an RC-135 Rivet Joint spy plane belonging to the U.S. Air Force flew around the Baja Peninsula and into the Gulf of California

Department of Labor says it has reached an agreement requiring the El Mazatlan Inc
chain of restaurants to pay $250,000 in penalties following an investigation by the department’s Wage and Hour Division
According to a release by the U.S
investigators learned the enterprise “violated federal child labor regulations” by employing 37 teens from the ages of 14 to 15 years old “to work longer and later than the Fair Labor Standards Act allows.”
The release says El Mazatlan also employed a 13-year-old
Officials say El Mazatlan is a Glasgow-based chain of restaurants
officials say the enterprise agreed to comply in the future and “to create and update child labor training materials in their management training program.”
The release says the employer will train all of its supervisors and managers
“Learning new skills in the workforce is an important part of growing up – but we must protect children and ensure their first jobs do not interfere with their education or well-being,” said Wage and Hour Division district director Karen Garnett-Civils in Louisville
“The Fair Labor Standards Act allows for developmental experiences but restricts the hours and occupations of workers under age 16 and provides for penalties when employers do not follow the law.”
the release says the division learned El Mazatlan “illegally deducted the cost of uniforms from the wages of servers,” which caused the wages of these employees to fall below the federal minimum wage
The release also states the employer did not pay overtime “to three salaried employees who were not exempt from the FLSA’s overtime requirements.”
the division says it recovered $50,233 of back wages
along with the same amount in liquidated damages affecting 168 employees
“We found El Mazatlan liable for significant penalties as well as back wages and damages totaling more than $350,000,” Garnett-Civils said
“The Wage and Hour Division is committed to protecting workers’ rights and holding employers accountable when they fail to pay employees in compliance with the law.”
For more information about the Fair Labor Standards Act and other laws enforced by the agency, contact the division’s toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243). To view the full release in English or Spanish, click here.

The move was taken “out of an abundance of caution,” the airline said.
A Sun Country Airlines flight on Wednesday from the Twin Cities to Mazatlan, Mexico, was diverted to El Paso, Texas, due to what the airline characterized as an unspecified “security concern.”
However, the FBI office in El Paso issued a statement late Wednesday that its investigation “determined there was no threat to the safety of the passengers, flight crew or the airplane.”
According to a statement from Sun Country spokesperson Wendy Burt, the airplane landed in El Paso without incident and passengers were provided overnight accommodations.
Flight 593, with 156 passengers, was scheduled to leave Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport at 11 a.m. But it didn’t take off until 2:21 p.m., owing to Wednesday’s heavy snowfall.
The flight was due to arrive in Mazatlan at 5:15 p.m., Pacific time. But the FBI was notified at about 4:15 p.m. Mountain time by its National Threat Operation Center that the plane was being diverted to El Paso International Airport, where it landed at 4:25 p.m.
The FBI conducted interviews “to determine the circumstances behind the reported security concern,” but didn’t say what the concern was.

The New England Revolution will begin their 2024 Leagues Cup campaign at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night, and their opponents will be Liga MX side Mazatlán FC – in one sense relative newcomers to Mexican soccer, but a team with whom the Revolution actually have something of a history. Contesting Leagues Cup for the second time in their history, Mazatlán will be coming in as hungry underdogs eager to cause an upset and make a run in this year’s edition of the tournament.
Los Cañoneros (“The Gunners”) were established in 2020 when Monarcas Morelia relocated their club to the city of Mazatlán, on the Pacific coast of Mexico facing the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Primarily known as a resort destination, Mazatlán has carved out a name for itself as a niche travel destination catering to beachgoers and cultural tourists alike.
Keen-eyed Revolution fans might recognize the former Monarcas Morelia club identity from an older continental competition. In 2010, New England earned a 1-0 victory over Morelia at home to round out a perfect SuperLiga group stage, on a night perhaps better remembered for the retirement announcement from MLS legend Steve Ralston. The Revs would meet Morelia again in the SuperLiga final that year, falling 2-1 at Gillette Stadium.

life in Liga MX has proven difficult so far
They missed out on the expanded playoffs in both the Apertura and the Clausura of their first 2020-21 season
and finished bottom of the table for the 2023 Clausura
Los Cañoneros have gotten off to a similarly rocky start
holding a 0-3-1 (1 pt.) domestic record coming into Leagues Cup
And the competition may provide some welcome respite for them
In their first appearance in Leagues Cup last season
at Q2 Stadium and edging out FC Juárez on penalties before bowing out against FC Dallas in the Round of 32
Given the difficulty they have faced in getting their season up and running
Mazatlán can be expected to come up to Foxborough hungry for a win and eager to prove themselves against MLS opposition
With the Revolution still waiting for a number of key players to return from injury
Leagues Cup 2024 will pose a unique challenge to head coach Caleb Porter and his team
Throw in the rivalry between MLS and Liga MX
and the history between these two teams specifically
and fans can expect to see sparks when the Revs host Mazatlán FC this weekend as both teams fight to make their mark on the continental stage
The colonial port city of Mazatlán is known for many things
is considered one of the longest in the world
which crowns a Gibraltar-like rock that rises from the sea
is ranked among the tallest natural lighthouses in the world
Recently added to the list of the city’s attractions is the Gran Acuario Mazatlán
the largest aquarium in Latin America and the only one in the world dedicated to the Sea of Cortéz
Opened in May 2023 following four years of construction
a celebration of the unique wildlife and marine ecosystems in the Sea of Cortéz
is the centerpiece of the city’s 75-acre Central Park
Focused on the preservation of seas and coastlines
the Gran Acuario Mazatlán combines unrivaled architecture
and state-of-the-art conservation technology
Designed by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao
whose works often merge geometry with nature
the three-story aquarium houses 260 marine species
The showcase attraction is the great Oceanic habitat
a 2.8-million-liter exhibition tank with a window that is more than 42 feet tall by 23 feet wide
the aquarium’s exhibition tanks hold approximately 1.2 million gallons of water
In addition to the colossal fish and coral reef tanks
the facility boasts a large lake filled with nearly 53 million gallons of water.Among the marine animals on display
are 36 species of mammals (including sea lions)
31 cetaceans (including dolphins and other aquatic mammals)
five of the seven global species of sea turtles
“The abundant marine fauna and the crystalline waters that bathe the coasts of the states of Baja California
Sonora and Sinaloa led (French oceanographer) Jacques Cousteau to call the Sea of Cortéz ‘the aquarium of the world,’” said Miguel Torruco Marques
He pointed out that the Gran Acuario Mazatlan brings many benefits to the city
such as an increase in the average stay of tourists and higher occupancy levels
The aquarium has already generated a greater economic spillover throughout the value chain of tourism activity
especially to small and medium-size businesses
we continue the path of making tourism a tool for social reconciliation,” Marques stated when the aquarium made its debut
Sinaloa and Mexico in the ‘showcase’ of world tourism.”
The recent debut of snorkeling and diving experiences at the Gran Acuario Mazatlán has added an exciting new interactive dimension to the already popular tourist attraction and research institute
Visitors can now swim with sharks and learn about hundreds of pelagic species both large and small in a safe environment
These new attractions have been an instant success with adventurous visitors
The minimum age to enjoy the snorkeling experience is 12 years old; cameras and video adapted for underwater use are permitted
Pictures and videos can be taken as per the divemaster’s approval
explorers can be part of the special Calypso tour
participants meet with marine biologists and animal care experts to learn about the impressive equipment that keeps the aquarium‘s denizens alive and healthy
The facility’s Humboldt penguins and California sea lions exhibits
a very social species and the aquarium’s unofficial ambassadors
entertain guests with their boundless energy and amazing skills
Approximately one million people visited the aquarium during its first year of operation
Sinaloa Tourism Minister Estrella Palacios Dominguez said the sparkling new facility marks a “before and after” in the history of Mazatlán as a tourist destination
Exuding a cathedral-like grandeur based on its size and scale
the aquarium’s interactive exhibits (touch tanks with rays and starfish) promote awareness of regional biodiversity
and a 240-person auditorium for educational and entertainment programming
Smaller meeting rooms are available for conferences
The aquarium’s lush botanical garden has a space dedicated to Jacques Cousteau
the pioneering underwater explorer and scuba tank inventor who’s highly revered throughout western Mexico for the groundbreaking discoveries he made in the 1960s
indigenous plants and colorful flowering vines hang from the aquarium’s terraces
enhancing the building’s appearance as an ancient
“It’s a place where the sea and terrestrial nature encounter architecture and the human world,” said Bilbao
One interesting feature is that the ocean’s bottom-dwelling species are found at the lowest level of the aquarium
while species that live in the middle depths or near the water’s surface are found on higher floors
enable visitors to take a break from touring the exhibits to enjoy Mazatlán’s balmy weather
Casa Guacamaya is a sheltered space that houses a diverse array of beautiful birds
these colorful birds live safely and under optimal conditions
Early arrivals can enjoy the free flight of the macaws
The aquarium is staffed with knowledgeable guides
The Gran Acuario Mazatlán was designed and built to attract an international audience in addition to domestic visitors
The aquarium has quickly become a leading scientific research center
with resources dedicated to the study of marine life and ecosystems
(A portion of the facility’s revenue has been pledged to preserve biodiversity in the Sea of Cortez)
The aquarium also functions as an educational hub
delighting and inspiring the next generation of marine biologists and oceanographers with immersive shows and thought-provoking exhibits
Through the Coordination of Education for Conservation
talks and various educational activities related to the conservation of marine life
These experiences are adapted to all education levels
The staff is trained to offer a fun and enlightening experience to visitors of all ages
The Gran Acuario Mazatlán is the first public-private partnership project in Mexico’s tourism sector
founder of Pueblo Bonito Resorts and a native of Mazatlán
played a pivotal role in realizing this ambitious project
generating 60% of the funding for the aquarium
Coppel was a recent judge on “Shark Tank Mexico”)
Additional funds for the aquarium were sourced from the national infrastructure fund (Fonadin)
the National Bank of Foreign Trade (Bancomext)
the National Works and Public Service Bank (Banobras)
Major contributors also included the Government of Sinaloa and the City of Mazatlán
The public-private development underscores a joint commitment to science
Secretary of Tourism Marqués stressed that Gran Acuario Mazatlán is a long-cherished dream
“Having an aquarium of international stature in this port supports the identity of Mazatlán and generates well-being through economic development
“The aquarium’s research programs will help preserve the rich biodiversity of the Sea of Cortéz and will promote sustainable practices for all aquatic animals in our region.”

a whale has washed up on a beach in Mazatlán
The giant mammal was enmeshed in a fishing net and the visible damage the animal suffered suggested it had been wrapped in the net for some time
— La Jornada (@lajornadaonline) January 10, 2025
On Wednesday night, local residents gathered along city’s oceanside malecón where the enormous whale came ashore
Local civil protection authorities responded quickly to the alert
but the animal — identified as a young humpback whale — was already dead
Along with employees of the Mazatlán aquarium and agents from both the Environment Ministry (Semarnat) and the federal environmental protection agency (Profepa)
the local authorities managed to remove the carcass
The whale — presumed to be a young humpback as it was measured at 8 meters and 15 metric tons
whereas adults of that species can reach 18 meters in length and weigh up to 36 metric tons — was removed and buried in an unspecified location
Semarnat and Profepa have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the whale’s death
Initial suspicions are that the whale got entangled in gillnetting
a type of fishing gear that consists of a wall of netting that hangs in the water
typically made of monofilament or multifilament nylon
vertical at the top and weights hold the net down at the bottom
animals can become entangled around their necks
Marine mammals entangled in set gillnets can drown while those entangled in drift gillnets can drag gear for miles as they migrate and forage
Gillnets are frequently used by local fishermen according to the newspaper El Imparcial
and are a leading cause of death for cetaceans
The investigators will try to determine if the netting caused serious injury or led directly to the whale’s death
Mazatlán Mayor Estrella Palacios said the type of gillnet involved
is prohibited in Mexico and called on fishermen to properly dispose of their nets
It’s necessary to “raise awareness so our fishermen understand they can’t leave behind these chinchorros because the whales get tangled in them
causing these regrettable losses,” she said
Another humpback whale washed up on Mazatlán’s Playa Cerritos on Dec. 15 That whale — measuring approximately 10 meters in length — was already in a severe state of decomposition and the cause of death was unclear
With an MLS season not going quite as well as they would have hoped up to this point
the New England Revolution are now able to take a step away from domestic play and turn their attention to Leagues Cup 2024
After bowing out on penalties in the Round of 16 of last year’s edition
the Revs return to Leagues Cup looking to get going on another run and make their mark on the continental stage
Head coach Caleb Porter said ahead of their first group game that the squad is still somewhat depleted
limiting the team’s options for rotation in this tournament
he has also said that hopes are high for the team to be more or less back to full strength once MLS play starts back up at the end of August
possibly bolstered further by a few signings
which would pave the way for New England to make a strong push for the playoffs in the last 11 games of the season
The Apertura campaign may have only just gotten underway in Mexico
but it has not been a strong start thus far for Mazatlán F.C
Los Cañoneros have only one point from four matches
falling to a -6 goal difference in the process and sitting only one place above last in the table
Leagues Cup 2024 could easily provide Mazatlán with an early chance to reset and refocus their season
They will also take confidence away from their performance in last year’s edition of the tournament
emerging top of their group over FC Juárez and Austin FC before only narrowly falling to FC Dallas in the Round of 32
Be prepared to see this Liga MX side come out desperate for a win on Saturday night
Wood was pivotal to New England’s only goal last weekend against FC Dallas
one that ultimately went down as an own goal but one that the former USMNT striker said during the week that he felt should have been his
With Porter suggesting during the week that a starting XI similar to last weekend’s will take the field against Mazatlán
Wood should have his next opportunity to get his goal on Saturday night
Amarilla spent two seasons in MLS playing for Minnesota United FC
after a brief loan spell with the Loons in 2020
and failed to score in his only appearance against the Revolution in June 2022
Yet to open his account in Liga MX this season
Mazatlán’s frontman will certainly be eager to get on the scoresheet in his second career run out at Gillette Stadium

2025 at 8:16 AM UTC·5 min readIn a match with an extremely controversial ending
Mazatlan and Chivas tied with a 1-1 score in a match that severely hurts both team’s chances to get to the post season
Chivas ended the match with 9 players and with a Midfielder as Goalkeeper but were able to get the tie after a terrible attempt by the home side to get the win and not be able to get off a dangerous opportunity after tying the match
even with a non goalkeeper as the last line of defense
Chivas has another important match at home against Puebla while Mazatlan also has one as important at home against Tijuana
The 1st half started with Chivas coming out with an offensive lineup
including Alan Pulido and Teun Wilke (taking the place of the injured Javier Hernandez) up top
Roberto Meraz would get off a wide open header but Chivas’ goalkeeper
A cross into the area was headed wide by Nicolas Benedetti
Roberto Alvarado would get off a good cross into the area where Teun Wilke would get off a good header that went past Mazatlan’s goalkeeper
Hugo Gonzalez and into the net to score and give Chivas the 1-0 lead
whose right footed shot went right to Gonzalez
A cross into the area was headed by Luis Rey past Gonzalez but cleared almost off the line by Lucas Merolla
There was a controversy when Samir brought down Wilke and only got a Yellow Card
The ref was called to VAR because he had been the last player when he brought down the Chivas attacker but the call remained
The halftime whistle blew and Chivas took a deserved lead to their dressing room
The 2nd half started with Mazatlan subbing out Omar Moreno
Samir and Jefferson Intriago for Mauro Lainez
Alvarado would make a great run and then give a pass into the path of Pulido
who got off a right footed shot that went past Gonzalez but would hit the post
Benedetti would get off a right footed shot that would go just wide
Chivas subbed out the injured Yael Padilla for Fernando Beltran
A cross into the area was headed by Pulido but it was easily handled by Gonzalez
Mazatlan subbed out Rodolfo Pizarro for Gilberto Adame
Wilke got off a left footed shot in the area that went wide
A cross into the area was headed by Meraz but it was saved by Rangel
Chivas subbed out Teun Wilke for Armando Gonzalez while Mazatlan subbed out Jair Diaz for Salvador Rodriguez
Luis Rey would get a second Yellow card and thus a Red
Chivas subbed out Alan Pulido and Roberto Alvarado for Diego Delgadillo and Ruben Gonzalez
Both Chivas players got Yellow cards as they left (for taking too much time) as the match looked to be getting out of control
Bryan Colula looked to have been tripped in the area by Gilberto Sepulveda
The ref would be called to VAR and he would decide to give a Penalty Kick
there was a scuffle as Raul Rangel had started to try to tear the field off the PK spot
which earned him a second Yellow Card and thus a Red and Chivas now was down to 9 players
they had no more windows for substitutions and Midfielder Erick Gutierrez
Luis Amarilla would step up to take the PK and with a strong right footed shot
who obviously didn’t come close to stopping it and the score got tied at 1-1
Mazatlan tried to get that next goal but they did a horrific job against a Chivas side with 9 players and without a first division goalkeeper
Armando Gonzalez almost won the ball in the area before Hugo Gonzalez got to the ball
Incredibly it would be the most dangerous chance as Mazatlan never got one after the PK and the match ended with a 1-1 score that didn’t help either team
While Chivas had a better start to the match
the red cards ended their chances and allowed them to lose out on those three points
Mazatlan wasted that opportunity with a terrible level off play and a total lack of offensive ideas to take advantage of facing 9 players
The match was also disastrous in every way as once again referee Fernando Hernandez had a poor job
losing control of the match with uneven decisions
While Mazatlan could have ended the match with 10 players after Samir had been the last defensive player when he stopped a clear goal opportunity after bringing down Wilke
the ref didn’t give a red card even after going to VAR but was able to give two red cards to Chivas and a Penalty Kick
There will be a lot of talk but the fact is that both sides had poor performances overall although because of different situations
Chivas will now have a must win match at home on Tuesday against Puebla while Mazatlan will have the same when they host Tijuana
