SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mexican authorities arrested Yolanda Marodi
the suspected killer of Cal Fire captain Rebecca Marodi
The State Citizen Security Force in Baja California said in a statement they located Yolanda near a hotel in the border town
where she was apprehended and transferred to the border
The San Diego County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Saturday that Mexican authorities released Yolanda to U.S
Marshals and that she was taken into custody
San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at Rebecca and Yolanda Marodi’s home in Ramona
Rebecca was found with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene; Yolanda had already fled
ABC 10News soon learned that Yolanda had a violent past, spending time in jail for killing a previous spouse
A San Diego County Superior Court’s arrest warrant unveiled more details
Rebecca allegedly told Yolanda she was ending their marriage roughly a week before the incident
and Yolanda can be seen in ring camera surveillance footage chasing Rebecca around the property the night she died
Yolanda was then seen loading pets and luggage into a silver Chevrolet Equinox
a vehicle the Department of Homeland Security identified entering Mexico hours later
Last week, dozens of people showed up in the rain to remember Captian Marodi at a procession in Ramona
More than fifty riders also came out for a memorial ride to Josie’s Hideout in Santa Ysabel
The Cal Fire San Diego Benevolent Fund is raising money to honor Captain Marodi and support her family
Tijuana’s industrial market has witnessed remarkable growth in the past decade
driven largely by nearshoring trends and a shift of investor interest
In addition to institutional capital that was already present in Tijuana
investors who had historically funded and developed office buildings and multifamily projects in Mexico City shifted their interest toward warehouse and logistics space in Tijuana to capture heightened industrial demand in the wake of Mexico City’s vertical construction moratoriums
Overseas manufacturers aiming to streamline operations and better serve North American markets have fueled the demand for manufacturing and assembly space
the total industrial space in Tijuana has expanded by over 20.6%
climbing from 96.1 million square feet (msf) to 118.4 msf by 2024
a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3%
the market's vacancy rate remains low at 4.6%
Class A buildings are particularly sought after
showcasing the growing preference for state-of-the-art industrial facilities
Tijuana also leads Mexico in Class A industrial rental rate appreciation
which has averaged 12.6% annual growth from 2020 to 2023
This has since tapered to a more sustainable 1.3% growth rate from 2023 to 2024
The city’s industrial real estate continues to achieve lower cap rates compared to any other Mexican market
solidifying its position as an attractive hub for tenants and investors alike.
The industrial market in Otay Mesa has also expanded significantly over the past five years
fueled by its proximity to Tijuana and similar nearshoring trends
Inventory in Otay Mesa increased from 15.8 msf in 2019 to 24.4 msf in 2024
rising by over 32% to 78,000 square feet per property
A critical driver of these markets’ transformations lies in the dynamics of land value appreciation
Tijuana and Otay Mesa have already set a precedent
with rapid increases in land prices as industrial demand rose
Mexicali and Calexico are now witnessing similar trends
Rising demand for industrial land in Mexicali signals the market’s evolution into a key nearshoring destination
while Calexico offers a prime manufacturing and warehousing location to complement this growth.

MEXICALI — Two longtime Calexico residents — a father and son — were gunned down in broad daylight in front of the produce
seed and farm supply store they owned in the San Gabriel neighborhood on the east side of Mexicali on the afternoon of Sept
81-year-old Ruben Silva Martinez and his son
by an unknown assailant on a motorcycle and possibly a second gunman in a 2008 Honda Accord
according to various news agencies out of Baja California
The Martinezes were apparently the victims of another gun attack at the same location in April over what one publication reported was a debt of money owed and another report said involved an inheritance.
The assaults took place at the family’s business
located on Orduño Jiménez Avenue and Calzada de las Américas.
The men were shot at as they were getting into their F150 pickup truck with California plates
The vehicle was parked under a roof at the main entrance of the two-story business when the armed men arrived and shot both
Police reports stated the father and son were hit by bullets in the upper body
there seem to be differing accounts on the number of gunmen
One account said the shooters were on the motorcycle and the Honda
while another account stated the motorcyclist was the sole gunman
fled toward Manuel Gomez Morin and left in the Accord at a nearby location after the motorcycle was torched

2025 5:00 AMThis Artificial Wetland Is Reusing Wastewater to Revive a Lost EcosystemLas Arenitas is an artificial oasis that recycles used water from the border city of Mexicali to regenerate ecosystems in the Colorado River delta.Photograph: Pablo RomeroSave this storySaveSave this storySaveIn the arid region south of Mexicali
where the pale desert dominates the landscape
the Las Arenitas wetland feels like a mirage
and is an oasis for endemic and migratory birds that cross the Colorado River delta
used water from the city of Mexicali gets a second life
in an attempt to revive ecosystems that were thought to be irrecoverable
American and Mexican authorities could no longer ignore how bad the problem had become
and they began collaborating on infrastructure to lessen the pollution
the Las Arenitas treatment plant began operations
generates more than 80 million cubic meters of sewage a year
with 46 percent of that going to Las Arenitas
Mexicali is one of the hottest cities in the world
solids and sediments are first removed from the wastewater
where air is injected into the water to stimulate the growth of aerobic bacteria
which decompose organic matter in the presence of oxygen
The water then passes to facultative lagoons
where aerobic and anaerobic bacteria complement each other
the latter degrading organic matter that the former could not
the plant did not perform ideally,” says Edith Santiago
deputy director of the Colorado River delta program in Mexicali at the conservation nonprofit the Sonoran Institute
some organizations proposed to the water management agency that they should use the surrounding land
to create an artificial wetland that would give the water additional cleanliness
as well as helping with the city’s sewage problem
would also help partially restore the local landscape to its former state
Before the overexploitation of the Colorado River
its delta crossed Baja California and Sonora until it met the waters of the Gulf of California
resulting in more than 400,000 hectares of wetlands
Although the river’s course has become a ghost
about 15 percent of those wetlands have survived
harboring an invaluable biodiversity of plants and animals
the Las Arenitas artificial wetland is a pause to the devastation of the local landscape
deputy director of the Colorado River delta program in Mexicali at the Sonoran Institute
they replaced obsolete equipment and made repairs to the plant
“Wetlands are the kidneys of the planet—they help to filter and clean the water
to remove particles through the different plants,” explains Santiago
and it occurs both underground in the roots of tule and alkaline reed
but also on the surface of the wetland waters
where microorganisms that degrade pollutants live
Microscopic life within the wetlands cleanses the water in diverse ways
such as by transforming nitrogen into other substances and by assimilating phosphorus into its own biomass
physical processes such as sedimentation occur
in which smaller particles fall to the bottom of the water body
The Revive the Colorado River Alliance reports that 50 percent of the water leaving the wetland flows into the Hardy River
The wetlands’ battle to maintain their balance is titanic
as the water treatment plant has been operating above capacity since 2013
The plant has an installed capacity of 840 liters per second
but it reaches 1,044 liters per second in some months
is yet to happen—though it has been on the table for more than five years
It’s possible to smell when the wetland ecosystem is out of kilter: The decomposition of organic matter there can generate unpleasant odors when these systems are under stress or out of balance
Assessing the quality of the treatment system’s discharges is costly
and Santiago points out that there are two key things that could improve the processing of the water here further still: “Implementing better water use in the city
and new technology such as activated sludge in the plant
which uses less space than the lagoons and is faster.”
The Las Arenitas complex has transformed 99 hectares into a wetland
it was agreed that 30 percent of its annual water volume would flow along the Hardy River to the south for environmental use—that is
but also for the benefit of local communities
The amount flowing into the Hardy River has now risen to 50 percent
“That the water from Las Arenitas flows along the Hardy River generates environmental potential; many species of birds and other wildlife use this area or live in it,” says Santiago
Plants in wetlands help the process through phytoremediation
the first bird census in the area yielded about eight species and fewer than 100 birds in total
highlighted the system’s high potential for regulating water flows
The city of Mexicali depends on the Colorado River and its underground water reserves
but it uses water at an unsustainable rate
Annual recharge of the Mexicali Valley aquifer is 520.5 cubic hectometers (hm3)
but more water is withdrawn from this underground store each year than reenters it (783.12 hm3)
the Colorado River is being squeezed to exhaustion
and is approaching a collapse that climate change is accelerating
but drastically more needs to be done to balance the region’s water use
“My dream for Las Arenitas is that the community will come to enjoy it
that there will be better water use in our homes so that less water reaches this area in poor conditions,” Santiago says

When I first moved to Mexico City three and a half years ago
a bit offended by the “Chinese food” on offer
The city’s Chinatown is filled with buffet-style restaurants offering low-priced meals
and menus filled with nothing but spring rolls
As a chef from China’s southwestern Yunnan province
I hoped to introduce a more nuanced interpretation of Chinese cuisine to the Mexican capital
the more I felt like something essential was missing from the country’s Chinese food scene
I found it in Mexicali — a hub of Chinese-Mexican cuisine near the border with the United States
The Chinese community in Mexico is primarily concentrated in Mexicali and Mexico City
tens of thousands of Chinese immigrants arrived in California
where they found work building the railroads
Faced with the United States’ exclusionary Chinese immigration laws
many later settled just south of the border
The capital of the Baja California state, Mexicali is known locally as “the city that captures the sun.” It has an extremely hot desert climate, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius. Despite these harsh conditions, Chinese immigrations managed to establish successful farms in the region
helping transform Mexicali into a Chinese cultural hub
there were 14 times as many Chinese residents in Mexicali as native Mexicans
After Mexico enacted its own discriminatory policies in the 1930s
the Chinese community in Mexicali formed the resilient enclave known as La Chinesca
Although Mexico’s Chinese population fell sharply in the 1930s
preserved La Chinesca’s heritage and laid the foundation for the city’s distinctive culinary landscape
The fusion of Chinese and Mexican flavors was initially a practical response to local conditions
but it has since become a symbol of cultural exchange
and community-building that continues to shape the region’s food culture today
I noticed stone lions and lanterns marking the entrances to its numerous Chinese restaurants
Mexicali boasts the highest density of Chinese dining options in Mexico
captures the essence of Chinese-Mexican fusion
rooted in Cantonese techniques but tailored to local tastes
with meals consisting of four to six dishes — including soups
such as its iconic “chop suey” with red-dyed meat
further reflects regional adaptations made by generations of chefs
filled with the clatter of woks and the aroma of soy sauce
Its approach — emphasizing quick preparation
and sweet and sour sauces — mirrors the practical needs of early Chinese immigrants while incorporating local ingredients like beef
resulting in a cuisine that feels both familiar and distinct
There are also signs of something new brewing in the region
a modest eatery that immediately piqued my curiosity
A glowing Google Maps review caught my eye: “The best char siu I’ve tried outside of Vancouver” — a city renowned for its authentic Cantonese cuisine
“I haven’t met someone from China for a while,” she admitted
a native of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong
followed her husband to Mexicali a decade ago
Her restaurant stands out with a menu focused on Cantonese staples: steamed dim sum
and dumplings — all prepared fresh in the kitchen by the entrance
She often travels to California to source authentic ingredients unavailable at Mexicali markets
“He trained in Guangdong before joining me here
I wanted to create a place where the flavors of home remain intact.”
Each bite was a perfect balance between lean meat and fat
she offered me a classic walnut cookie — a crunchy treat that instantly transported me back to my childhood
Chieng’s Bistro preserves authentic Cantonese traditions while standing as a testament to the evolving identity of Chinese regional cuisine in Mexicali
That’s a feeling I’ve been chasing since I arrived in Mexico
starting from the first pop-up wine tastings I organized in Mexico City to the Chinese tapas bistro I opened in the city two years ago
I decided to take a chance of my own: adding small-pot noodles
In addition to the classic noodles floating in bone broth
we offer diners the option of topping it with moronga
a kind of Mexican blood sausage — my attempt at fusing the flavors of Chinese and Mexican cuisine
I’ve come to appreciate the history and techniques of Mexican-Chinese food
but the chefs who make it are inheritors of a long tradition of adaptation and resilience
it’s important to look beyond simplistic labels like “authenticity” and recognize that the food I grew up with is just one thread in the rich tapestry that is Chinese cuisine
