MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday that U.S
President Donald Trump proposed sending American troops into Mexico to help her administration fight drug trafficking but that she rejected it
Her remarks to supporters in eastern Mexico came in response to a Wall Street Journal article published the day before
describing a tense phone call last month in which Trump reportedly pressured her to accept a bigger role for the U.S
military in combating drug cartels in Mexico
'How can we help you fight drug trafficking
I propose that the United States military come in and help you.' And you know what I said to him
White House National Security Council spokesman James Hewitt said in a statement later Saturday that Trump has worked closely with Mexico's president "to achieve the most secure southwest border in history."
"Dangerous Foreign Terrorist Organizations
continue to threaten our shared security and the drugs and crime they spread threaten American communities across the country," the statement said
"The President has been crystal clear that Mexico must do more do combat these gangs and cartels and the United States stands ready to assist and expand the already close cooperation between our two countries."
military presence has increased steadily along its southern border with Mexico in recent months
following Trump's order in January to increase the army's role in stemming the flow of migrants
Northern Command has surged troops and equipment to the border
increased manned surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl trafficking along the border and sought expanded authority for U.S
Special Forces to work closely with Mexican forces conducting operations against cartels
Trump designated many of the gangs and cartels smuggling drugs into the U.S
restricting their movements and lending law enforcement more resources to act against them
But Sheinbaum's hardline stance Saturday signaled that U.S
pressure for unilateral military intervention would put her and Trump on a collision course after months of cooperation on immigration and trade
but you in your territory and us in ours," Sheinbaum said

I remember arriving in Mexico City very vividly
It was a Sunday – 11 November 1984 – and my dad
That was my first connection to the country
I was born in Colombia to a Colombian mother and an Italian father
and we travelled around a bit – living in Paris and Buenos Aires – before settling here
I consider myself Mexican; I’m married to a Mexican and I have Mexican kids
But it took me a while to understand what Mexico was to me
I made up for that when I became an adult; then it was very much about understanding the country

who was already quite a well-known artist then
“Why don’t you open a gallery and represent me and all our friends?” The landscape for contemporary art in Mexico City was pretty deserted then
Most of the energy revolved around artist-run spaces
Downtown is a place where jewels can appear
The first show happened in Mercado de Medellín
and all of the works responded to the materials of the market – and were sold at the market’s prices
It appeared on the front cover of the main newspaper in Mexico
We started taking over different spaces around the city for a few years
before finally settling in what is now Kurimanzutto – José Kuri and Mónica Manzutto – in the city’s San Miguel Chapultepec neighbourhood
Restaurante Rosetta © Maureen Martínez-EvansPink mole, beets and shiso, and crab, vichyssoise and white asparagus at Restaurante Rosetta © Maureen Martínez-EvansThe southern neighbourhoods are historically the most intellectual, where Frida Kahlo
Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo had their homes
In San Miguel Chapultepec there is an incredible hacienda where Manuel Mondragón
who played an important part in the Mexican revolution
a painter and a muse to Dr Atl and many others
starting with some cool restaurants and cafés
Contramar – a restaurant in Roma – is on everybody’s lists
a place where we gather and spend hours with friends
one of my favourite chefs is Elena Reygadas of Rosetta; I perceive her as an artist
She travels to all these places – to Ensenada to look for the right fish; to Oaxaca for specific mushrooms
My favourite traditional restaurant is Nicos
it’s just amazing food.) Another is Casa Merlos
a restaurant that focuses on mole – the traditional sauce – from Puebla
by Perla Valtierra © Perla ValtierraManzutto in Kurimanzutto gallery
with installations by Haegue Yang © Maureen Martínez-EvansI also spend a lot of time downtown – in the museums
It’s a place where jewels can appear: if you are curious enough to go to the Abelardo L Rodriguez Market
you’ll discover a Noguchi mural in the middle of the second floor
There are also wonderful shops there: Remigio Mestas is one of the best places to go for textiles in the country: huipiles (traditional tunics)
And I love the colours and shapes of Perla Valtierra’s tableware
though: culture is the thing that moves me around the city
There’s a whole new generation of artists and galleries – Campeche
you can walk around and just discover something
The other day I found Salón de la Plástica Mexicana
an old institution with not so much artworks
And recently I read a book by Álvaro Enrigue in which he tells the story of the encounter between Moctezuma [an emperor of the Aztec empire] and Cortés [the Spanish conquistador who overthrew the Aztec empire]
I spent three days downtown trying to imagine what the Mēxihcah/Aztec empire was like
There are all kinds of ways you can connect to Mexico City
It is at all times vibrant and diverse in many ways – culturally

Amasa Estudio renovates a long-abandoned 1940s house in Colonia Roma, just six blocks from Parque México in one of Mexico City’s most sought-after neighborhoods. Originally used as office space
the architects preserved the structure and gave it new life

What began as a plan for a single-family home evolved into something more adaptable. In the Casa Sofia project, the Mexican architects of Amasa Estudio fit a ground-floor one-bedroom apartment
a garage that doubles as a small commercial unit
All three have separate entrances from a shared vestibule
making it possible to rent or work from parts of the property while maintaining privacy.
Bedrooms are tucked away on the first floor
and a spiral staircase leads up to a second level with the kitchen

A ‘fireball’ lights up Mexico skies sparking awe across the country
lit up the skies over Mexico’s capital around 3 a.m
Videos of a ball of fire shooting over the Latin American country and dissolving in a burst of light over Mexico City struck awe in many — and quickly became the fuel for memes circulating on social media
photos of the fireball edited with cartoon characters and political jokes flooded the internet
are “exceptionally bright meteors that are spectacular enough to be seen over a very wide area.”
a doctor in space science with the National Autonomous University of Mexico
said it could also be described as a meteoroid
Bolides like the one that coasted over Mexican skies early Wednesday catch fire as they descend to Earth
they begin to flash with a stretching tail and emit light,” said Rodríguez

grill is aiming to introduce the ‘Chipotle fever’ to Mexico
Scheduled for early 2026, the first store is thought to be opening in Mexico City. The company, however, has not yet revealed the official location. And yes, the announcement has created high expectations in Mexico. Even El Universal newspaper recently described the brand as “[the restaurant] that reinvented Mexican food.”
Given that our cuisine is the product of thousands of years of Prehispanic heritage
merged with the Spanish influence in the Colonial era
this might come as a little bit of a stretch
We love our freshly prepared salsa and recently handmade tortillas
When we think of having tacos — or burritos
in the northern states — we certainly do not think of dining at a grill
On the contrary, we think of more accessible alternatives. Even before the UNESCO included our cuisine in the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010
we already held carnes asadas in the north
and continued to visit our maestros parrilleros
Why, then, does a fast food company from the U.S. create such expectations in the Mexican market? My guess is that we are curious: as curious as we were about the opening of the first Shake Shack, back in 2019. People were eager to see what they had to offer. When we realized a burger was over 250 pesos
the idea of dining at Shake Shack became a lot less interesting
A similar phenomenon was seen with Wendy’s and Tim Hortons
that simply went out of fashion — and business
in the case of Wendy’s — when the novelty wore off
“Chipotle is committed to making its food more accessible to everyone,” the company announced in a recent press release
will the Chipotle’s prices be comparable to those of local market stalls or trusted street puestos
Will they offer the freshness of the meat of the day
which we appreciate in Mexico from our maestros parrilleros

MEXICO CITY -- Joaquín Niemann won LIV Golf Mexico City on Sunday for his third victory in six events this season, closing with a 6-under 65 for a three-stroke margin over Bryson DeChambeau and Lucus Herbert
Niemann finished at 16-under 197 at Club de Golf Chapultepec
The 26-year-old Chilean star also won last year in Mexico at Mayakoba
He has five LIV victories after winning twice on the PGA Tour
and second-round leader DeChambeau shot 70
Ram Racing’s Zaky Ibrahim was victorious in all three races of round two of NACAM Formula 4’s season in Mexico City
The delayed return to action after March’s season opener attracted 10 cars. Alessandros Racing’s Fernando Luque was fastest in practice by 0.103 seconds ahead of Ibrahim, then in qualifying a 1m33.805s earned Ibrahim race one pole by 0.334s over Luque.
Santinel Racing’s Marco Alquicira was third, 0.552s off pole and 0.007s ahead of second-generation talent Alex Popow Jr. Ibrahim set three laps good enough for top spot, and the second of those earned him race three pole by 0.353s.
A stronger start meant Luque led off the line in race one on Friday, and Alquicira also passed Ibrahim on the long run to the first braking zone. Ibrahim regained second on the inside at the turn four hairpin, and entering the esses Alessandros’s Alejandro Bobadilla was spun down the order from fourth.
Luque lost first place to Ibrahim at turn one on lap two, then he and Alquicira remained in the leader’s slipstream. Alquicira tried a turn one pass on lap five, which allowed Ibrahim to escape.
Jose Martinez passed team-mate Popow for fourth on lap six. Gaps mostly opened up, and Ram’s Alan Zezatti dramatically spun away seventh on lap 12 after having finally passed team-mate Elias Vignola.
Alquicira was pressuring Luque again two laps later, and attempted to pass around the outside at turn one on lap 15. He was stumped by Luque’s positioning on the run to turn four on lap 17, while Vignola moved into sixth as Ram’s Max Mora spun late in the lap.
Vignola was then promoted to fourth, as Martinez and Popow were disqualified post-race. Bobadilla was fifth, with Mora back in sixth.
The top four were flipped for race two’s grid on Saturday, and Alquicira passed poleman Vignola en route to turn one but went off at turn two and dropped to fourth.
Ibrahim and Luque passed Vignola at turn one on lap two, with Alquicira and Bobadilla following through at turn four. Alquicira had a half-spin on lap three that dropped him to fifth behind Popow. He got back past at turn one on lap four, Popow drove around the outside of him at turn four on lap five, then Alquicira repeated his move on lap six as Luque overtook Ibrahim.
The top three were together, and Ibrahim began lap eight by reclaiming the lead. Luque attacked at turn four on lap 11, and a lap later Bobadilla had an off that left him fighting with Alquicira before being behind both he and Popow by lap 14.
Popow tried passing Alquicira on lap 16 but almost lost fourth, and Luque cleared Ibrahim on lap 17 before messily defending through the penultimate lap. He picked up a five-second penalty, handing victory to Ibrahim.
Luque passed Ibrahim at the opening corner of race three, but the poleman was back past by turn four. Alquicira retired in the pits at the end of lap one.
Popow dived down the inside of Luque at turn one on lap five, Martinez passed Bobadilla for fourth on lap 10, then red flags ended the race on lap 15 due to oil on track.

President Donald Trump recently took to Truth Social, sharing his desire to bring Columbus Day “back from the ashes.” But the federal holiday that began in 1934 under Franklin D. Roosevelt never actually went away — despite Joe Biden becoming the first U.S. president to observe Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021.
Azul Navarette-Valera, who identifies as an Indigenous Mexicana, shared Trump’s rhetoric – claiming Democrats “did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation and all of the Italians that love him so much” – is disheartening.
“It just shows he’s really out of touch,” said Navarette-Valera, “with what’s going on with the world surrounding him. Nationally, we’re in this progression of having more attention on Indigeneity and uplifting Indigenous voices. It’s just very disheartening, but I can’t say I’m surprised.”
She spent the last five years working to remove the name of Christopher Columbus from a Tucson park. First known as Silverbell, the city changed it in 1990, with help from the Tucson Knights of Columbus chapter, to honor the quincentennial anniversary of the controversial Italian-born explorer’s 1492 voyage to the Americas.
Then in February, the Tucson City Council unanimously agreed to rename it after Tohono O’odham elder Danny Lopez.
“A lot of the time, Indigenous stories and history-making is erased by colonization,” added Navarette-Valera. “So we would like to decolonize that land and decolonize Native history by acknowledging that [Lopez] is part of Tucson and we don’t want to forget that.”
Even neighboring Mexico City replaced a bronze Columbus figure with a replica of a pre-Columbian statue known as the Young Woman of Amajac under then-Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum – now Mexico’s first female president.
Although some Arizona cities like Phoenix, Tucson, Tempe and Flagstaff acknowledge Indigenous Peoples Day, the Grand Canyon State still recognizes the second Monday in October as Columbus Day.
“So, what Trump means by ‘reinstating’ Columbus Day is something that he has to explain,” said David Martinez, who is Akimel O’odham-Mexican and director of Arizona State University’s Institute for Transborder Indigenous Nations. “If Trump expects Indigenous people to respect him as president, then he needs to treat us better.”

share-facebookshare-xshare-whatsappshare-copy-linkIt was the third individual title in six events this season for the Torque GC captain
MEXICO CITY – It’s known as “Golf’s Longest Day,” the 36-hole final qualifying for players aspiring to earn a spot in the U.S. Open. Joaquin Niemann was not looking forward to it.
The Torque GC captain clinched the LIV Golf exemption by virtue of his third victory of the 2025 season on Sunday at LIV Golf Mexico City and will be in the field in mid-June at Oakmont. It will be the sixth U.S. Open start for the 26-year-old Chilean, who is now scheduled to compete in the rest of this year’s majors after already playing the Masters earlier this month.
“My team was asking me to sign up for the qualifier and the sectional, and I wasn't really into that,” Niemann said after his three-shot victory at Club de Golf Chapultepec. “So more than anything I'm grateful that I'm not playing 36 holes on a Monday after a tournament. Yeah, I'm pretty happy.”
Awarded by the U.S. Open for the first time this year, the LIV Golf exemption goes to the player among the top three in the season-long individual standings as of May 19.
In claiming the 40 points that goes to each LIV Golf individual tournament winner, Niemann extended his season-long points lead with his victory in Mexico City. Of his 124.66 points this season, 120 have come in his three tournament wins – Adelaide, Singapore and Mexico City.
He now leads Jon Rahm by 30.3 points and Sergio Garcia by 46.66 points. With one final tournament – this week’s LIV Golf Korea presented by Coupang Play – left before the U.S. Open’s LIV Golf exemption is awarded next month, Niemann has guaranteed himself a spot for Oakmont.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by LIV Golf (@livgolf_league)
Rahm is the only player who can mathematically overtake Niemann with a win in Korea, and he already has a spot in the U.S. Open. Garcia doesn’t have a spot in the U.S. Open but is too far behind to catch Niemann, even with a win in Korea and Niemann finishing outside the top 24 in points.
Niemann now becomes the 10th LIV Golf player expected to be in the U.S. Open field, and he’ll play in all four majors for the first time since 2023. He received special invites to play in the Masters and PGA Championship this year, and earned an exemption into the Open Championship by finishing in the top 25 in last year’s Race to Dubai on the DP World Tour.
One of golf’s top players without a major, Niemann looks forward to making some noise in the upcoming majors, especially with his current winning form.
“It’s great to keep doing what I'm doing, hitting the ball great, making putts,” Niemann said. “Hopefully keep it rolling.”

This is not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo
which is also in May and which you may be familiar with as involving U.S
beer commercials and confused Americans in sombreros
May 1 is the day Mexico honors people who work with their hands
The teachers who still show up even though their schools have no chalk
Día del Trabajo is part of the international workers’ movement
Like many of the good and terrible things on this continent
during a peaceful protest for the eight-hour workday
Mexico marches in the name of workers and justice
an English speaker trying to make sense of this beautiful chaos we call Mexico
Many visitors in Mexico spend May 1 lounging on a beach
talking about how good the cost of living is here
but you should at least know why the guy who made your margarita isn’t getting holiday pay
Mexico has one of the hardest-working populations in the world
The average worker puts in over 2,200 hours a year—more than anyone in the OECD
often ignored in practice but powerful in principle
The day honors the people who build the country—literally
And while you may not feel the weight of that as you sip cold cerveza in 32 C heat
you might just notice it if you stop scrolling long enough to watch a parade of worn shoes and proud hearts marching down the street
Don’t forget who made your street walkable

The Mexico City Grand Prix has secured a new contract to host a Formula One race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track in the Mexican capital until 2028
The Mexican event has featured on the F1 calendar for three distinct periods through the championship’s 75-year history
with its current run starting back in 2015
The race’s current deal with F1 promoter Formula One Management (FOM) had been set to conclude at the end of 2025
after the race was granted two separate three-year extensions following the conclusion of its original five-race contract in 2019
This includes running through the 2020 season most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
“We are very excited to announce that the Mexico GP will be held for three more years,” said Alejandro Soberón Kuri
“We are deeply grateful for the invaluable support of the government of Mexico City
from the head of government of Mexico City
as well as Stefano Domenicali (CEO) from Formula 1
who have made it possible to continue bringing Formula 1 to our country.”
The Mexican Grand Prix first appeared on the F1 calendar back in 1963
with the Magdalena Mixhuca track hosting seven races in the following years
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez then held seven more F1 world championship races between 1986 and 1992
The track’s current run of races coincided with the rise of Sergio Perez —statistically Mexico’s most successful F1 driver
He scored six race wins and 33 other podium finishes after commencing his F1 career with Sauber back in 2011
He most recently raced for the Red Bull team alongside world champion Max Verstappen
but was dropped from the squad at 2024’s end
This led to concern amongst CIE officials about the race’s chances of retaining its slot
but several factors have combined in its favor around the new deal
has been consistently popular with fans — with 404,958 people attending the most recent event over three days in October 2024
This figure includes 154,124 people attending race day alone
Then Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz dominated that day
where Perez produced a very poor showing that included a jump start penalty

Amid swirling rumors that Mexican driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez will return to Formula 1 with the new Cadillac team
Mexican motorsport fans have been electrified by the news that the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar through 2028
With the current contract in its final year
a new three-year extension was confirmed Wednesday by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and other officials
It ensures the 66-year-old Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will continue to host one of the sport’s most vibrant and best-attended races, which drew 154,142 fans for last year’s final in which Perez finished dead last among 17 cars.
In hailing the commitment between Formula 1 and Mexico City’s government
Brugada emphasized that the event will persist without spending taxpayer money
relying instead on private and business sector support
Since its return in 2015, the Mexico City Grand Prix has become a marquee event, drawing record crowds — 405,000 attended over three days in 2024 — and adding significantly to the city’s economy and profile

Bryson DeChambeau hits a shot on the 9th hole at LIV Golf Mexico City at Club de Golf Chapultepec on Saturday in Mexico City
Bryson DeChambeau leads LIV Golf Mexico City after 36 holes at Club de Golf Chapultepec
although this leaderboard has turned into a good one
DeChambeau, after rounds of 63 and 66, leads at 13 under, while Cameron Smith (12 under) trails by one. Joaquin Niemann (10 under), Jon Rahm (nine under) and Tyrrell Hatton (eight under) are also still in the mix
“I think we play a very similar style of golf,” Smith said of DeChambeau
I think there’s a lot of opportunities to lay back

He’s obviously a great player in his own right

share-facebookshare-xshare-whatsappshare-copy-linkNiemann claims third win this season; Legion XIII grabs season-long standings lead
MEXICO CITY – Joaquin Niemann’s third victory of the season Sunday at LIV Golf Mexico City was not your average win
He won with his mother in attendance for the first time outside of his native Chile
He claimed the hearts of the local fans appreciating his Latin American roots
thanks to the LIV Golf exemption he clinched with one tournament to go
it was a pretty good day for the 26-year-old Niemann
“Pretty hard to make it more special than this moment right now,” he said while drenched in celebratory champagne on the 18th green at Club de Golf Chapultepec
RELATED: Final leaderboard | Updated standings
It was also a pretty good day for another Spanish-speaking captain
as Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII won a tight battle with the all-Australian Ripper GC to win their second trophy of the season and move to No
Legion XIII earned the hard-fought victory with all four players shooting under par
No other team on Sunday had more than two players under par
“To hear that all four of us shot under par is not easy
Niemann seemed to make it look easy this weekend
shooting 64-65 after an opening 68 on Friday
He started the final round three shots behind Rd
and two shots behind Ripper Captain Cameron Smith in the final group but outperformed both major winners
each of whom failed to break par on the par-71 layout

Niemann took the lead for good after DeChambeau’s double bogey at the par-4 13th when he lost his tee shot out of bounds
Niemann then finished with a flourish with birdies in two of his last three holes to finish at 16 under
DeChambeau’s 71 left him three strokes behind and tied for second with Ripper’s Lucas Herbert
who matched Rahm’s course record with a 10 under 61
Niemann extended his season-long points lead and guaranteed his exemption into the U.S
no matter what happens next week at LIV Golf Korea
the final tournament before the exemption deadline
The Torque captain is now slated to play in the remaining three majors this season after already competing at last month’s Masters
“My team was asking me to sign up for the qualifier and the sectional
and I wasn’t really into that,” Niemann said of the U.S
I’m grateful that I’m not playing 36 holes on a Monday after the tournament.”
Smith drifted out of contention after failing to make a birdie through his first 14 holes
but his Rippers amazingly stayed in the hunt for their second consecutive tournament win thanks to Herbert
who played a 10-hole stretch in 8 under and had an outside chance at breaking 60 going into his final three holes
Getting used to this 💪 @joaconiemann#LIVGolfMexicoCity @torquegc_ pic.twitter.com/ekEHBm3Xj3
But the one-man Aussie show could not compete with Legion XII’s steady contributors
Rahm and teammate Tyrrell Hatton – paired in the same threesome with the Rippers’ Matt Jones – each shot 68 while Tom McKibbin birdied his last hole for a 70
who was 4 under on his round before suffering four consecutive bogeys
provided decisive birdies for Legion XIII on his final two holes to shoot 69
“I was proud of the way that I handled myself all week,” said the 21-year-old Surratt
I still feel like I have something to prove
I knew going into today that a good round could do just that.”
Legion XIII has now won six times since 2024 after becoming LIV Golf’s first expansion team; that ties for the second-most of any team
Niemann has five individual victories; that ties Brooks Koepka for the most of any player in league history
“It’s special to be up there with Brooks for most wins,” Niemann said
“It’s just been three years since I joined here on LIV
and I feel like it’s a special place now for me to be here.”
LIV Golf’s new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. (Click here for more on the new format)
Here are the final results and scores for each team after Sunday’s Rd
OPEN SPOT: In claiming the 40 points that goes to each LIV Golf individual tournament winner
Joaquin Niemann extended his season-long points lead
120 have come in his three tournament wins (Adelaide
He now leads Jon Rahm by 30.3 points and Sergio Garcia by 46.66 points
With one final tournament left before the U.S
Open’s LIV Golf exemption is awarded next month
Niemann has guaranteed himself a spot for Oakmont in June
The exemption goes to the leading points player not already exempt in the top 3 of the standings as of May 19
Rahm is the only player who can mathematically overtake Niemann with a win in next week’s LIV Golf Korea
Garcia doesn’t have a spot but is too far behind
Niemann already is in the PGA Championship and Open Championship
so he’ll play all four majors this year for the first time since 2023
He becomes the 10th LIV Golf player expected to be in the U.S

HERBERT’S 61: Ripper GC’s Lucas Herbert tied Jon Rahm’s course record at Club de Golf Chapultepec by shooting a bogey-free 10-under 61 that included one eagle and eight birdies
Rahm paid credit to the Australian for having a more challenging task
“Today the golf course was harder than when I did it,” Rahm said
Rahm had one hole-out when he shot 61 at the 2020 World Golf Championships event here
“He’s a phenomenal player and someone I look up to a lot,” said Herbert
“so to have my name next to his as a course record
Herbert’s performance kept his Ripper team in the mix for the team trophy
even with his teammates struggling to break par
Marc Leishman shot 74 and Matt Jones shot 75 as the Rippers finished second
two strokes behind winning team Legion XIII
“There’s been a ton of times on Sunday I’ve played poorly
and the other boys have carried me,” Herbert said
Feels like maybe I chalked one back up on the other side of things.”
Herbert needed birdies on his final two holes
“I just didn’t leave myself putts that were easy to be aggressive with the last two holes,” he said
Herbert’s 10-under round ties for third lowest round
SURRATT DELIVERS LATE: It was a rollercoaster final round for Legion XIII’s young star Caleb Surratt, who was battling a queasy stomach on Sunday. He was a bogey-free 4-under through 10 holes, then gave it all away with bogeys on his next four holes. What had been a healthy six-shot lead for Legion XIII suddenly disappeared.
“I guess somebody else made a bogey or two, and the next thing you know we were tied,” Surratt said. “I was like, Oh my gosh, it’s my fault. Like it was all my fault.”
But much like he did in the team’s season-opening win in Riyadh, Surratt finished strong, delivering the decisive birdies on his final two holes to break the tie with Ripper. Tom McKibbin also finished with a birdie on his last hole, as Legion XIII overcame a five-stroke deficit to start the day to record their sixth win in team history.
“Really proud of Tom and Caleb for their finishing birdies,” said their captain Rahm.
RAHM'S STREAK CONTINUES: One of the most impressive and consistent accomplishments stayed alive in Mexico City. Rahm finished solo fourth and has never finished outside the top 10 in his 18 completed LIV events.
400-YARD DRIVES: Three drives of 400 yards or more were recorded in the final round, bringing the total for the week to 21 drives at that distance in the thin air of Mexico City’s 7,900-foot elevation. Bryson DeChambeau accounted for five of those 400+ yard drives.
Please note that not all drives are officially recorded under LIV Golf’s longest drives statistic, which measures two holes in each round.
List of 400-yard drives in the third round:
Driving accuracy: Sebastián Muñoz, 92.86% (13 of 14 fairways hit)
Driving distance (for measured holes 7 & 12): Bryson DeChambeau, 377.1 yards avg.
Longest drive (for measured holes 7 & 12): Joaquin Niemann, 404.5 yards, 12th hole
Greens in regulation: Joaquin Niemann, Bubba Watson, Brendan Steel, 88.89% (16 of 18 greens)
Scrambling: Sebastián Muñoz (5 of 5), Lucas Herbert (4 of 4), Thomas Pieters (3 of 3), Jinichiro Kozuma (3 of 3), Joaquin Niemann (2 of 2), Bubba Watson (2 of 2), 100%
Putting: Lucas Herbert, 1.33 putts per hole
Bogey-free rounds: Lucas Herbert (61), Bubba Watson (67), Sebastián Muñoz (67), Thomas Pieters (68)
that our neighbor to the south has a great recycling system
I found Mexico has the same problems we are trying to overcome
we are working to implement or improve three-container systems
another for recyclables and a third for organics such as food scraps and yard trimmings
they have just two categories: organic and inorganic
I saw this two-way separation system in public areas and at private facilities of tourist-heavy Puerto Vallarta
and learned the system has been in place since 1994 in the capital
It looked like public cooperation would make recyclables easy to sort
reducing the need for massive public education and eliminating the need for a third collection route
I soon found that Mexico has the same basic problems with their system that we do with ours
need more public education about what goes in which container
And they need to convince more people to participate
I saw these problems first at a “swim with dolphins” attraction
the site’s organic and inorganic separation system was prominent and beautiful
Dark wooden containers with light wood lids sported matching metal plates with white labels designating organic and inorganic containers in both Spanish and English
I found the contents of each container almost indistinguishable
none of the three employees I asked at the site
whether the popsicle stick and paper brochure I wanted to discard were “orgánicos o inorgánicos.”
I expressed my frustration to a person at the front counter
the custodians just dump both containers in the same place.”
When I asked locals about the system in the other cities I visited
I heard the same confusion and saw the same mix when I looked inside containers
public education and motivation is essential
recycling coordinators working for public agencies and private haulers are focusing outreach efforts on boosting participation and correct separation for organics programs
food scraps are the most common organics mistakenly placed in garbage cans
Some of the reluctance to participate may be simply because dealing with food scraps can seem gross to some people
Here are tips to minimize mess while managing organics in kitchens:
Some people find these measures too difficult
they store food scraps in a bag in their freezer
emptying the bag into their curbside organics cart only the day before collection
In addition to the two-way separation program
Mexican cities also used another collection method that has some advantages
agencies have erected wire sculptures with large
People open doors in the sculptures and add these recyclables to fill the space
It was hard to tell how often people took a few extra steps to open a sculpture
but at least the open wire seemed to prevent contamination by making it obvious what was intended and what each person was adding
The program shows making actions visible to others can help lead to cooperation with recycling programs

IT’S MEXICO CITY WEEK 🇲🇽The 6th stop on the schedule and our first time to the capital 🙌#LIVGolfMexicoCity @RiyadhAir pic.twitter.com/XfxYVjoSsw
LIV Golf makes its first visit to Mexico City, which has a metro population of nearly 23 million
That makes it the largest city to ever host a LIV Golf tournament
The host course is Club de Golf Chapultepec
which is located 7,800 feet – roughly 1.36 miles – above sea level
That makes it the highest elevated city to host a LIV Golf event
LIV Golf Mexico City promises to be one of the league’s most unique and interesting tournaments in its young history
“I really enjoy Mexico City,” said HyFlyers GC Captain Phil Mickelson
LIV Golf’s elder statesman and a World Golf Hall of Famer
Mickelson has enjoyed success at the host course
having won a World Golf Championships event there in 2018
all four WGC events that Club de Golf Chapultepec hosted were won by current LIV Golf players
with 4Aces GC Captain Dustin Johnson winning twice and his teammate Patrick Reed winning the most recent one in 2020
Players will certainly be challenged by the high elevation that will increase the distances of shots
A 7-iron that may travel 185 yards at sea level could see a 20-30 yard increase
And no telling how far driving distance leader Bryson DeChambeau’s tee shots will go
“The biggest challenge is the altitude and getting the distance control down,” Mickelson said
you can really appreciate how beautiful the golf course is and the area around it.”

That race will be held four years out of six between 2026 and 2031
with other venues taking its slot in the 2028 and 2030 seasons
This represents the first rotational deal of this kind agreed between F1 and a host venue
Spa-Francorchamps' previous hosting contract had been due to come to an end following the 2025 season
hosting rights renewals took place covering the (equally iconic) Monaco and Monza circuits
featuring 24 races (the maximum that can be allocated
through the contracts between the 10 teams and F1
began in Australia in mid-March and runs through to Abu Dhabi in early December

added: "This not only contributes to the economic development of Mexico City
and which for almost 10 years has shown the world the quality of the events we organize in this city.”

MEXICO CITY — The Mexico City Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar through at least the 2028 season after a three-year contract extension was announced on Wednesday
and the city's mayor said negotiations are ongoing for an even longer deal
With the contract for the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit set to expire at the end of this season
the organizers and local authorities needed to get a deal done
“This (contract) does not mean that it is the end of it
but early next year we will have good news regarding the continuity of this wonderful event for years to come in Mexico City,” mayor Clara Brugada said at a press conference
Mexico first hosted an F1 championship race in 1963 and has been on the calendar every year since 2015
excluding 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic
“Formula 1 has a deep tradition in this country
it is part of the history of several generations that saw these cars run and have seen the sport evolve to become one of the most important competitions in the world," Brugada said
The extension comes as F1 experiments with rotating some established off-schedule slots in alternate years to meet demand for new hosts outside of Europe
Mexico also fits in with F1’s plans to reduce travel by scheduling back-to-back races in the same regions of the world
it’s part of a four-race series in the Americas

Bryson DeChambeau goes off on the state of the bunkers at the 2025 LIV Golf Mexico City event
At LIV Mexico City last week, Bryson DeChambeau put together his best performance of the season, despite coughing up the lead. But if you saw Bryson’s angry reaction to the bunkers at the host course before the tournament began, you might be surprised with how well he played. Now a video has emerged from DeChambeau’s bunker rant, and TV analyst Brandel Chamblee is not happy about it
During the first two rounds of LIV Mexico City, DeChambeau shot out of the gate with rounds of eight-under 63 and five-under 66 to take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round
Bryson was fresh off a disappointing final round at the 2025 Masters, where he held the lead on the 3rd tee before struggling the rest of the way and shooting 75. Eventually, his dream of a Masters win faded as Rory McIlroy took the crown
Given that poor ending, DeChambeau was likely intent on proving it was a one-time stumble. But in Mexico City, Bryson struggled again in the final round with a win on the line. He made two bogeys and a double bogey to finish at even par for the day. That dropped him to a T2-finish and handed the title to Joaquin Niemann
That brings us to the video making the rounds in golf social media circles this week, shared by @perisgolf on Instagram
DeChambeau played a practice round at host course Club de Golf Chapultepec
Bryson was filmed struggling to escape from multiple bunkers on the course
Open champion was clearly unhappy with the state of the sand in the bunkers
and he loudly announced his displeasure to the camera
“Worst f—ing bunkers ever!” DeChambeau exclaimed from a bunker with his arms raised in disgust
When an observer asked if the issues Bryson was having were due to “wet sand,” DeChambeau shot that explanation down quickly
What the hell,” DeChambeau continued
“You can hurt somebody’s wrist

What specific issue DeChambeau had with the bunker sand isn’t entirely clear
the video shows the star LIV pro failing to escape from bunkers in at least four instances
The video then cuts to DeChambeau in another bunker
which once again didn’t leave the confines of the sand trap
Longtime TV analyst Brandel Chamblee is a frequent LIV Golf critic
And DeChambeau is one of his favorite targets
So when Chamblee saw the video in question
he couldn’t help but comment on it publicly
In a post on X, Chamblee wrote that DeChambeau “signed up for this” and claimed that LIV Golf doesn’t value the “best conditioned courses,” but instead those that will agree to host LIV events
“You signed on for hundreds of millions
Chamblee is the latest well-known golf analyst to criticize DeChambeau publicly
Six-time major winner and former CBS lead analyst Nick Faldo took heat recently for criticism he made of DeChambeau while working for Sky Sports during the 2025 Masters
But when interviewed about the reaction, Faldo offered an impassioned defense of his critiques
“That’s bulls–t,” Faldo said of his critics to the Times
I don’t like the way he plays at times
which I’m allowed to criticize.”
Golf fans will get to see DeChambeau on the biggest stage once again in two weeks
when he attempts to win his third-career major title at the 2025 PGA Championship
