2025—The shock is so sudden a neck injury nearly results
I do a double take at the dish in front of me and wonder
The breakfast dish was about as simple as it gets, essentially a two-ingredient omelet, whipped eggs and dry Jack Vella cheese, with a squirt of backyard lemon and some Pezzini Farms Artichoke Seasoning
elegant but indulgent element of dill that made me wish my omelets were bigger
I remember that instead of the usual olive oil
I deployed Lemon Dill Chef Butter on the pan
longtime friends and former chefs Jane Hayes and Janet Melac had to be smiling
This outcome—to make restaurant-level flavor so easy it approaches accidental—was front of mind for Hayes when she called her friend amid COVID to share a long-held ambition for fancy compound butters, made easy
She tapped Melac—who graduated top of her class at Le Cordon Bleu Paris—to conjure the flavors
which originally numbered 25 that they tested with friends all over the country
The nine they’ve simmered down to inspire recipe ideas by themselves
Consider the possibilities for any and all of the following: Basil Garlic
Melac loves the “umami bomb” quality of the Shiitake Ginger
scrambled eggs and steamed halibut as ways to detonate it
“It’s just super versatile,” she says
that type of creativity takes the form of a challenge: “The real question is…what can’t you do with Chef Butter?”
The answers furnished include “step up your salmon,” “enhance your corn on the cob,” and “elevate your grilled cheese.”
I’m looking at the Blueberry Lemon and thinking pancakes
The longer backstory deserves some telling
Hayes abandoned a successful career directing kitchens at late great legendary spot Old Bath House at Lovers Point
Pebble Beach Lodge and Tanimura & Antle to spend more time with her young kids
But she couldn’t quit the flavor game
and set about building a business that would give busy chefs a tasty and well-conceived shortcut
The first kitchen hack she developed I love even more than Chef Butter: Natural ArtiHearts
(In my defense I’m just getting into this #compoundlife
but have been about artichokes since pre-K)
Hayes transformed her passion for artichokes—a Monterey Bay staple that happens to tasty
healthy and labor intensive—into a max convenient ingredient that doesn’t sacrifice a nanoparticle of freshness or flavor
When I dug into the area artichoke industry with “Artichokes: Diving to the heart of what makes the local gem great,” her Salinas-centered workshop—just down the road from her favorite Castroville artichokes—was the coolest discovery
As I report in the print issue out now (Spring 2025):
she and her team rescue artichokes deemed too flawed to sell whole—because they might look a little iffy from frostbite or have a hole in a leaf—hand-trim them to their hearts and give the leaves to local beef ranchers whose cows love to munch them
oils or leaves of typically imported jarred hearts
and one whose simple freshness and flavor speaks to the thought that went into it
our fresh artichoke hearts add an element of richness and complexity to a meal not found anywhere else,” Hayes says
“I have vegetarian customers tell me that our artichoke hearts are a delicious substitute for meat.”
which feel like a steal at around $5—at Grove Market in Pacific Grove
Bruno’s Market in Carmel and Star Market in Salinas and various Whole Foods—Monterey Farms also does a brand new product in ArtiQs
ready for a savvy restaurant chef or home cook
Can I get a hallelujah from the congregation
The last word here goes to my #1 tastebuddy (!!)
the one who stocked the premium eggs (from River Dog Farms) and cheese (from time-honored Vella Cheese Company) for the omelets
She also helps press the ++ olive oil I normally use with preparing eggs
and savors simple and outstanding producers
“I didn’t think it was going to add as much as it did,” she says
“It really does elevate the experience.”

Free naloxone (or Narcan) and fentanyl testing strips are now available 24/7 at public vending machines at four locations in Monterey County
The vending machines are part of a countywide initiative to address the opioid overdose crisis locally
County of Monterey Director of Health Services at a ribbon-cutting on May 1 at the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Center in Salinas
where one of the vending machines is located
"Opioid overdoses are taking more than a 100,000 lives a year across the U.S and fentanyl is a major driver," Jimenez said
245 emergency room visits and 75 hospitalizations related to any opioid overdose and 126,000 prescriptions for opioids were issued."
"While our county rate of opioid related deaths was 12 per 100,000 residents compared to approximately 21 per 100,000 residents in California
we need to continue to address this urgent public health issue to prevent further harm to our residents from overuse of opioids," Jimenez said
The vending machine at the Salinas station is one of four that were placed at locations throughout Monterey County
Locations were selected based on being a hotspot for overdoses and having a high foot traffic
The other sites are the Behavioral Health Access Outpatient Clinic at 30 Pearl St
MST Transit Center in Marina at 280 Reservation Road and the Monterey County Jail at 1410 Natividad Road in Salinas
and cities or agencies are encouraged to contact the health department if they are interested
Each vending machine comes stocked with 200 doses of naloxone and 50 fentanyl test strips
MST CEO Carl Sedoryk said that all too often bus drivers and other MST staff are called on to respond to a member of the public in crisis
our bus drivers have people who are unresponsive
and we don't always know what to do—or rarely know what to do," Sedoryk said
we have to call in the EMTs or other public safety and that occurs all too frequently."
In 2023, an MST bus driver had to pull their bus over at a Burger King parking lot in Soledad when a rider stopped breathing, according to reporting by KION
Police arriving at the scene discovered the rider was overdosing and administered Narcan
The driver kept dispatch informed of the situation and let the other passengers off the bus safely
we have resources here in place at our facilities here in Salinas and Marina
where people can help save a life," Sedoryk said
The vending machines are part of a two-year pilot project and part of the county's broader public health strategy to reduce the impact of opioid use and create pathways to treatment and recovery using opioid settlement funds
In partnership with Decoded
a statewide educational campaign on substance use
the county is also developing a youth-focused communications campaign to prevent opioid misuse before it starts and provide support for young people who are already struggling with substance use
My festival reports start with apologies for what I didn’t see
I trust readers will let me to atone in private
The Jazz Bash by the Bay celebrated its 45th anniversary at the Portola Hotel and Conference Center in Monterey
The music began on Thursday night and came to a stop Sunday afternoon
so an eager audience could see many performances
And the crowded halls showed that people did
thanks to JAZZ LIVES’ Chief of Staff Mark Voitenko
I delight in the lovely surprises he captured
The Bash is a gracious festival: many viewers return regularly to see their musical friends
I chatted with people I know only from festivals
and many of my musical heroes were playing
and I was thrilled to have a few minutes with him
There were many working bands: Dawn Lambeth and the Daybreakers
The unfortunately-titled “Young Bucks of the Clarinet,” featuring Dave Bennett
Scharf’s (When Your Lover Has Gone) and Zimmerman’s (You Can Depend on Me) were rewarding
Scharf’s floating lyricism makes her someone to watch
as proven by a gratifying duet set by Chris Calabrese
It was called “From Morton to McKenna,” but those were only imagined landmarks
The duo glided from ragtime classics to evocations of Bix
“Friends with Pleasure” paired two married couples: Paolo Alderighi and Stephanie Trick
Leisurely explorations included a Gershwin medley of (The Man I Love) and (Liza) by Marc and Paolo; a tender (Can’t We Be Friends?) by Stephanie and Dawn
and an exquisite (Skylark) by Dawn and Paolo
Sometimes when festival organizers put together groupings of musicians new to each other
the words “hope and pray” are silent but tangible
And the repertoire can plummet into over-familiarity because Sweet Georgia Brown is safe terrain
But neither of these two things happened on “Danny Tobias and his Chosen Four,” which featured Danny
The quintet ambled and soared through (Happy Feet)
recalling the memorable Decca duets James P
The set closed with two bows to Louis Armstrong
appropriately: a surging nearly nine-minute (No One Else But You)
and one reverent chorus of (Sleepy Time Down South)
I wanted to stand up and put my hand over my heart
The working bands were ones I follow and admire
Hal Smith’s high-octane evocation of 1960s Southern California classic jazz
as is the depth of their repertoire: (Far Away Blues)
alongside more familiar songs associated with Bunk Johnson
Josh Duffee’s well-maintained hot dance band
but enjoyed another with pop classics (The Varsity Drag) side by side with (Don’t Wake Me Up
I only heard part of a set by Paul Mehling’s Le Jazz Hot
but was moved by an appropriately sentimental (Roses of Picardy)
Carl Sonny Leyland never fails to rock the room
he turned a bright-morning formal room into a Kansas City nightclub in a matter of minutes
He sang his vengeful (Rat Catcher’s Blues)
and turned Collazo loose for a riotous (Avalon)
as Dave sang Cindy Walker’s (It’s All Your Fault)
No one else is offering us (I Don’t Want to Make History (I Just Want to Make Love)
The Chicago Cellar Boys have a fiercely loyal following
alto saxophone; Natalie Scharf; Paul Asaro
A CCB set is both exhilarating and educational: Andy knows and has arranged or transcribed Twenties and Thirties compositions that would otherwise be only entries in discographies
and the band plays them with spirit and accuracy
Even when the resulting performance is less than three minutes long
a force of nature has made itself at home onstage
clarinet trios and evocations of the Apex Club Orchestra are a singular pleasure
And the CCB can become a 1926 dance band or the Henderson orchestra with no more effort than choosing number 826 as their next offering
The most consistent pleasures came from Dawn Lambeth and her Daybreakers (a band name coined by Danny Tobias)
I’ve been a devoted fan for more than two decades
and at last year’s Bash she sang with great style
This year saw the addition of the nonpareil guitarist
The group occupied the fertile space between 1936 Teddy Wilson and 1955 Bethlehem Records
and she sang marvelously: touching ballads (I Get Ideas)
which should be available when you read this
The Daybreakers were a splendid band on their own
and brought a marvelous Kansas City Six feeling to (Way Down Yonder in New Orleans)
Other instrumental features were (Lady Be Good)
and the rocking rhythm section cheering everyone with (Rosetta) and (Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen)
Reynolds brought his impish magic to each set with (Pardon Me
in a hurry to get a good seat so that I could get the best video
I fueled myself with packaged sandwiches and plastic cups of ice water
because the Bash was somewhere between the best dream and a party full of the most generously creative friends
