An earthquake has struck Mexico in the region of Guerrero mere minutes after Colombia was hit with a forceful 6.7-magnitude tremor
was qualified as a 5.3-magnitude quake following initial reports
Unlike many quakes that have hit Mexico recently
the epicenter of this one was centered on land as opposed to out at sea
The quake was centralized 17 miles outside of Ometepec and eight miles from the neighboring town of Xochistlahuaca
with the most recent taking place in January
The small 4.3 quake was centered 14 miles northwest of San Pedro Pochutla
The region also had a major quake around the same time last year
It was a 6.3-magnitude quake that had an epicenter located 100 miles southeast of Chilpancingo
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Mexico
damaging hundreds of homes and sending panicked residents out onto the streets of the capital
The quake struck on Tuesday south of the Pacific resort of Acapulco
Initially it had estimated the magnitude at 7.9
Interior Minister Alejandro Poire said 11 people had been injured
Guerrero governor Angel Aguirre told state radio that some 1,600 houses in four municipalities of the coastal region known as the Costa Chica had been damaged
He said that authorities were checking schools and public buildings around Ometepec
Many houses showed signs of damage in Ometepec
while patients at the main hospital were evacuated into a garden
The White House said President Barack Obama's 13-year-old daughter Malia
we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said Kristina Schake
telephone and power lines were cut off and traffic lights stopped working as office workers rushed onto the streets
Local media reported one person was injured when a pedestrian bridge collapsed on an empty bus in the north of the city
It was one of the strongest quakes to shake the capital since 1985
when an 8.1-magnitude earthquake left between 6,000 and 30,000 dead
according to officials and rescue organizations
"We were told to evacuate," office worker Francisco Bernal said as he stood in the street
"The earthquake was strong but now we're prepared
"I stood up when I saw the lights moving," said Ana Fernandez
another office worker in the central Roma district
"Our boss told us to get out and we followed instructions not to shout
I was really scared but I made myself stay calm."
German tourist Gernot Nahrung said he was in the city's Chapultepec park and did not feel the swaying movement of the quake
Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrand said no serious damage was visible during a helicopter survey
The mayor's Twitter account said the water system and other "strategic services" experienced no problems
Some windows broke at the city's international airport
and the monorail between the two terminals was stopped temporarily
The quake's epicenter was 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) deep
100 miles (162 kilometers) from the tourist city of Oaxaca
As the sun sets on the Pacific Coast town of Ometepec, Mexico, musicians and fans gather on a rooftop to enjoy boleros. The crowd of about 70 people listens attentively to Las Hermanas García perform "Que Sepan Todos." Most of the audience is made up of teenagers and the García sisters take note
was born in Cuba and migrated around the world
It took root in Mexico and became extremely popular in the 1950s
Laura notes part of the excitement to perform is because they are "helping to spread the bolero." Celia says boleros are part of their DNA
"It's a genre that we heard since we were in my mother's womb," Celia says
"This region has always been known to be very romantic
My father used to sing serenades to my mother and now we listen to this music."
He says his daughters started singing together before they were 10
"I coached them a little bit with their voices
but really they're natural singers," Mariano explains
Celia took the first voice and Laura second and suddenly they were making music."
The legacy of Carrillo and other composers of his generation is still felt today across the country
Mexico City has a boleros-only radio station and national pop stars have made boleros a regular part of their repertoires
says boleros are so popular in the Costa Chica
that you can go to any party and hear a bolero group
those boleros from that period have been transmitted from one generation to the next
this tradition will continue for a long time," Estrada says
The boleros have become such a big part of people's lives, they take them wherever they go. "They're listening to Radio Ometepec [and] to the García sisters in the U.S.," Estrada says
There are a lot of people there who are from all these towns along the Coast
Just imagine how they feel being so far away from the Costa Chica and listening to songs from here."
The Garcia sisters are in the process of rehearsing songs they plan to record for their second album. This time, they want to sing boleros from other coasts of Latin America. And their music is spreading even further. Celia and Laura recently performed at La Clave Festival in London in front of thousands of people
"We're doing what we like to do," Celia says
"And I think that when you're doing what you really like to do

There is also a lot of speculation in the Mexican media that the "new volcano" might somehow have caused the earthquake or all the aftershocks being felt in the region
there are quite a few reasons why it is very unlikely that there is a "new volcano" formed by the Oaxaca earthquake or that the earthquake was somehow caused by this supposed volcano
you need water to come off the oceanic crust that is being pulled under the overriding plate
The water only comes off at a certain depth (which is related to temperature)
so the location of the volcanic arc tends to be hundreds of kilometers from the trench (however
it varies from subduction zone to subduction zones based on the angle of the slab beneath the overriding plate)
It is the essential source of information and ideas that make sense of a world in constant transformation

An image circulated online via social media purports to show former vice president and 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden kissing a young girl on the cheek, typically accompanied by comments labeling the picture as "sick," "disgusting," and inappropriate:
Whatever one might think of the propriety of the pictured activity, it has nothing to do with any U.S. politician. It's actually an image of Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, taken from a March 2020 video showing him greeting enthusiasts outside a hotel in Ometepec in south-western Mexico:
Here's another screenshot from the video, showing more clearly that the person in question is Obrador and not Biden:
