Wednesday: Revised to include a statement from the Ozumba family
A McKinney surgeon arrested last week on suspicion of sexually assaulting two female patients has been arrested again on four new sexual assault charges
on Tuesday and booked him at the Collin County jail
where his combined bail was set at $100,000
"These allegations are false," Ozumba family spokeswoman Lauren Bennett said in a prepared statement to KXAS-TV (NBC5) on Tuesday
"We are confident that justice will be served and that Dr
Ozumba faced two sexual assault charges connected to accusations that he groped and penetrated the genitals of two female patients he was treating — one last August and one in late March
One of the patients told police that Ozumba had texted her after the assault to ask her what her favorite part of the procedure was
Crime in The NewsRead the crime and public safety news your neighbors are talking about
The four new charges stem from complaints three other people made this month, McKinney police said.
One woman complained about a visit in July. She told police she went to see Ozumba for an injection and was asked to undress from the waist down and given a paper sheet to cover herself. After applying the injection on her outer leg, Ozumba told the woman that he needed to manipulate the leg to ensure the medicine had gone to the right area, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The woman said Ozumba's fingers went over her genitals and that she felt like he was stroking her, according to the affidavit. She told police that the doctor asked her if she was happy or feeling good and that she asked him, "What did you say?" The doctor replied, "Oh, nothing," according to the affidavit.
The woman told police that Ozumba called her while she was away on a mission trip. During a follow-up appointment, the woman brought a daughter and a friend because she felt uncomfortable, according to the affidavit. Ozumba seemed angry about the other visitors and didn't get close to the patient's genitals, the affidavit reads.
A second woman, who went to Ozumba for knee pain, also complained about visits that took place last summer and alleged that she was asked to undress from the waist down. She told police Ozumba attributed her knee problems to her hips, gave her an injection and then used an ultrasound wand on the crease of her leg. The woman felt Ozumba's little finger touch her clitoris, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
"Ozumba advised [the patient] that he was wanting to check a little longer to make sure the injection was doing what it was supposed to do," the affidavit reads.
The woman told police that she thought about getting a second opinion but that she assumed what happened "was process."
During another visit for a hip injection, the woman decided to keep her underwear on, according to the affidavit. The doctor looked shocked and later moved her underwear to expose her genitals, the woman told police.
The woman said Ozumba's finger had "consistent contact" with her genitals, according to the affidavit.
A third woman complained about a January appointment. The patient told police that Ozumba said her knee pain was stemming from her hip issues and that he had administered injections in her inner thigh and in her right knee.
The woman kept her spandex on during one injection appointment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. She told police that while Ozumba massaged her leg, he kept hitting her genitals and that his hand hit her clitoris directly.
During a follow-up visit, the woman brought her husband, according to the affidavit. She said she visited for a shot in one of her knees, but as she was leaving, a nurse told the woman that the doctor had time to give her an injection on her other knee.
The woman told police she went to get the other shot from the pharmacy and told her husband he could go back to work.
When she returned to the doctor's office, Ozumba looked angry and said, "you had to bring your husband for backup," according to the affidavit. The woman told police that Ozumba "jabbed" her with the needle and caused her to yell in pain as retaliation for bringing her husband.
As he moved her leg back and forth, the doctor rubbed the woman's foot against his genitals, according to the affidavit.
Ozumba is an orthopedic surgeon with an office in McKinney. Earlier this month, the Texas Medical Board temporarily suspended his medical license "after determining his continuation in the practice of medicine poses a continuing threat to public welfare," according to a news release from the board.
The board will look into the allegations before taking further action.

The Texas Medical Board on Friday temporarily suspended the license of a McKinney orthopedic surgeon arrested on suspicion he sexually assaulted two female patients while they were under his care
31 and booked him at the Collin County Jail
The medical board temporarily suspended Ozumba's medical licence "after determining his continuation in the practice of medicine poses a continuing threat to public welfare," according to a news release from the board
The board will look into the allegations before taking further action
"A temporary suspension hearing with notice will be held as soon as practicable with 10 days' notice to Dr
unless the hearing is specifically waived by Dr
Police said the offenses happened at OSSM Orthopedics in the 8000 block of State Highway 121 in McKinney
Ozumba couldn't be reached for comment this week, but his family released a prepared statement to KXAS-TV (NBC5)
"We flatly deny each and every false allegation and are confident that the legal system will vindicate Dr
"We appreciate the support from our local and global community."
One of the women went to his office last week to be treated for a sports injury
She told police that the doctor exposed half of her genitals to check for internal fluid and told her he needed to rub in the medication he had injected under her left hip
then penetrated the woman's genitals with his fingers and massaged her inside
The woman's husband was sitting behind the doctor but couldn't see what was happening
The woman told police that she contacted another doctor after the visit and asked whether what Ozumba had done was normal procedure
The second doctor informed her that Ozumba was "absolutely not supposed to penetrate her vagina," according to the arrest warrant affidavit
Ozumba asked the woman to download a messaging app and sent her a text asking what her favorite part of the procedure was
The woman told police that she texted him back with a message that said "Not receiving a script," then deleted the app
Ozumba continued to text the woman and asked her to come back in
Another woman reported a sexual assault to McKinney police in August that occurred during an appointment with Ozumba the same month
She said she had gone to the doctor to get a shot for a physical disability
Ozumba had been rude to the woman during her first two appointments
but he became "charming" during the third visit
A nurse gave the woman paper shorts and a gown to cover herself during a sonogram
but the doctor told the woman that he couldn't help her until she undressed and told her to cover up with a sheet
He rubbed the outside of her legs like he was feeling for something and then began to rub the inside of her legs
The woman felt something poking her genitals and thought it was the sonogram machine cord but realized it was the doctor
The woman said the doctor left the room and came back
She told a nurse that she had another appointment and left
"[The victim] stated that Ozumba was trying to 'masturbate' her," police wrote in the affidavit
The woman told police she hadn't said anything because she was embarrassed and thought she should have known better about what to do during the incident
Police called her to get more information about her case after the March assault was reported
has been fully licensed by the Texas Medical Board since 2005
No medical malpractice investigations were listed on his physician profile
the Texas Medical Board ordered Ozumba to complete a course in ethics or risk management after he failed to release the medical and billing records of a patient in a timely fashion following multiple written requests
He has worked as team physician for professional

Reekado Banks is no stranger to having a hit song
but something about his latest and most successful solo record – Ozumba Mbadiwe (titled after the popular expressway in Victoria Island
It’s most definitely not your run-of-the-mill Afrobeats banger with more of a priority to make you move your body than to connect with the listener on different levels
This was different. Reekado Banks, assisted by the prodigious P.Priime
ticking all the boxes between a danceable jam and theme-packed lyrics
Reekado Banks might just have cracked the code for himself and found a very rational equilibrium between “danceable” and “deep”
but what exactly was he talking about on the smash hit
And why are there so many possible interpretations to the things he said on the track
this song is packed with references to road transportation
whether by bike as the cover art of the song implies
The references to the road and transportation are abundant in this song
the quoted lyrics above can be translated to regular terms as “I’m not trying to slack
and I have to be very alert and cautious in this place where everything moves fast”
These lines are insightful enough to show that Reekado put a lot of thought into his lyricism on this track
The lines that follow give more clarity on what Reekado is speaking on
meaning that he is aware of how fast and demanding the city of Lagos can be
reinforcing a common trope in the tale of the Nigerian come up.
It is not uncommon to hear about young men and women leaving their villages and hitting the road to get to Lagos – the bustling
in search of better opportunities to make a decent living
Ozumba Mbadiwe echoes the sentiments of the struggle that most people who move to Lagos for these reasons have to face
another profound angle that the iconic song subtly depicts while distracting you with its head-bopping rhythm
I’ve been silent… But they think say I’m in hiding
Reekado Banks also uses this track to address his one-year hiatus from major music releases between 2020 and late 2021. In an interview with City FM
Reekado stated that he worked on Ozumba Mbadiwe for a year before its eventual release
he was asked why he chose the title “Ozumba Mbadiwe”
Reekado Banks explained that it was a reply to a lot of people who had been asking for his whereabouts during the period where he wasn’t dropping any new music
According to the award-winning singer-songwriter
he had been “busy” just like the Ozumba Mbadiwe way
tying in perfectly with the theme of road transportation
if you think say you be giant; you be giant for your pocket
This line sparked controversy online because many people spontaneously judged it to be a satirical jab at Burna Boy for publicly belittling him on Twitter a year before the song’s release
It makes a lot of sense that that would be the case but the lyrics that follow seem to be pointing at a more pertinent problem than a Twitter feud and bruised egos
The fact that Burna Boy goes by the nickname “African Giant” didn’t really help the case that the line wasn’t directly aimed at Burna Boy
But the line that follows tells you all you need to know about Reekado’s intentions with that line
He proceeds to boldly call out the Nigerian government for the infamous “October 20
something happen with the government… them think say we forget
Nigeria’s history is deeply steeped in injustice and unfair treatment of its masses
The use of music as a conduit to voice the displeasure and rebellion of the people against this federal brand of injustice
used their music to lend their voice to the agitations against government-fueled injustice
And in a long list of songs that voice the dissatisfaction of the people
Reekado Banks makes a huge statement through Ozumba Mbadiwe
At the end of the music video for the track
we hear the shouts of the protesters that escaped the scene of the unfortunate Lekki tollgate massacre
an unsettling reminder of the reality of government brutality against the people it was designed to protect
It’s very clear that Reekado Banks was being intentional about paying respect to the Nigerians who died at the hands of armed forces
…Cause na money I dey find (na money I dey find), E no easy for Lagos
and despite its rather plentiful layering of themes and meanings
it manages to show the kind of intentional lyricism and theme setting that many have complained that Afrobeats music was deprived of for a long time
the abundance of themes might also be a point of criticism for the song because it could seem to be doing too much for one song
barely four months after the track dropped
Reekado Banks enlisted the assistance of Fireboy DML
The remix is currently charting in more than fifty countries
but was received with mixed emotions on social media because a lot of people felt like it conveyed a completely different theme from everything the original track was trying to say.
and how important his money is to him in the tough city of Lagos
somehow tying it to the actual Ozumba Mbadiwe location somehow
It seemed like a rather sharp deviation from a song with a primary theme of speaking out against injustice for many people
It could be assumed that Fireboy bringing the theme of hustle and payment borrows from the theme of “not coming to Lagos for child’s play”
Could that have been the rationale behind Fireboy’s verse
What are your thoughts on this culture-halting hit song

Mexico City residents often forget that they live nearly on the doorstep of one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes
The city’s infamous smog rarely allows even a glimpse
But Popocatépetl has dominated the geography
and its recent activity makes experts and the government nervous
Popocatépetl is both exceedingly majestic and dangerous
Its name comes from Nahuatl and means “smoking mountain.”
The Florentine Codex notes that even decades after the imposition of Catholicism on the native peoples in the area
pilgrimages to both petition and appease the volcano continued
the volcano is often called simply “(El) Popo” and “Don Goyo.” The first is a shortening of the difficult Nahuatl
is probably from an early colonial renaming of the mountain
it comes from the appearance of an old man near the town of Santiago Xalitzintla
who introduced himself as Gregorio Chino Popocatépetl and is believed to be the spirit of the mountain
the volcano continues to receive offerings and pilgrimages today
just now in the guise of Saint Gregory’s feast day
Popocatépetl appears in numerous artworks from the region
and is featured in the English-language novel “Under the Volcano” (1947) by Malcolm Lawry
If you have seen the image of an Aztec warrior carrying a limp maiden
it is a reference to a “Romeo and Juliet”-like story that explains why Popo is active and its “partner” volcano
Most modern humans generally dismiss the supernatural
but I’ll mention here that Popocatépetl’s crater is the focus of stories of UFOs that may have a base within
Don Goyo may no longer command worship — but it still should be respected
but none have such a population density living so nearby
Popocatépetl is an active stratovolcano — like Hawaii’s Mauna Loa and Indonesia’s Krakatoa — and it’s the second tallest active volcano in North America (5,425 meters)
It and Iztaccihuatl separate the Valleys of Mexico and Puebla
archeological finds and written records evidence the volcano’s impact on them (us)
An eruption is believed to have spurred migrations that resulted in Teotihuacán
Eruptions have been recorded as early as the 1300s
Hernán Cortés was impressed by the two volcanoes
describing them as “…two marvelously high mountains whose summits at the end of August are still covered with snow so that nothing else can be seen of them
a great volume of smoke often comes forth…”
Popocatépetl has had 15 significant eruptions
but none (yet) have had major destructive consequences
One reason is that its last plinian eruption (i.e
extremely explosive — think Mount Vesuvius in A.D
when the valleys did not have the population density they have now
The area around the Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes is the Izta-Popo National Park
but unlike parks in the United States and Canada
a column of smoke from El Popo has been visible on most days
There is always the risk of a major eruption
Hugo Delgado Granados of the Geophysics Institute of UNAM
Such an eruption could obliterate everything within 15 km and cause serious damage as far as 100 km away — a radius that’s home to about 25 million
And urbanization is creeping up the slopes as Mexico City and Puebla continue to grow
there is a 12-km exclusion zone around the crater because of fallout
Popocatépetl has caused some headaches for airlines
but more ash accumulation could snarl land traffic as well — and if rain is involved
the resulting sludge would clog drainage systems
Lava from Popocatépetl’s crater is not a major threat
There is plenty of magma under the valleys
but their danger comes from small “pop-up” volcanoes (like Paricutín in Western Michoacán)
Volcanoes like Popocatépetl can give some warning of an upcoming eruption
warning systems and evacuation plans are essential to prevent tragedies
Mexico’s main warning system is a stoplight-like advisory system called the semáforo de alerta volcánica
which currently is in yellow (caution) — Phase 2
the general advisory has been as high as yellow-3 (the status just before red)
Today, it is possible to see what Popocatépetl is up to 24/7. Popocatépetl’s crater is a favorite of Webcams de México
where you can look at it anytime and receive alerts in social media when something interesting happens
Although evacuation routes are well-marked
a major evacuation would be challenging at best
both because of the number of people and due to the fact that the Valley of Mexico is crowded
Could Mexico evacuate everyone in time in the worst-case scenario
Delgado Granados says that there are many factors to consider but also that monitoring systems and evacuation plans are being constantly upgraded

“October 20, 2020 something happened with the government, they think say we forget. For where, for Ozumba Mbadiwe” — read the lyrics from the second verse of Nigerian artist Reekado Banks’ new single ‘Ozumba Mbadiwe’ – named after a Nigerian politician and a road on Lagos Island that leads to Lekki Toll Gate
As we remember October 20th — a year later — Banks’ single briefly commemorates the events of the End SARS protests that occurred at the Lekki Toll Gate
as well as honours the lives that were lost during that time
armed members of the Nigerian Army arrived at the demonstration site and opened fire on peaceful and unarmed protesters
The Lagos State administration later announced that the shooting left up to 25 people injured and
End SARS is a social movement in Nigeria that consists of a series of widespread rallies against police brutality
The slogan demands that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad — SARS — a notorious Nigerian police organisation with a lengthy history of abuses
began in 2017 using the hashtag #EndSARS and demanding that the Nigerian government dismantle the unit
following fresh reports of the unit’s abuses
enormous rallies took place across Nigeria’s major cities
accompanied by a barrage of social media indignation
It’s not difficult to imagine that 27 year old Banks has been deeply affected by End SARS as well as the violence that has ensued thereafter
Grounded in afrobeats and the sultry rhythms that Nigeria is synonymous with
Banks is careful not to boast or centre himself in ‘Ozumba Mbadiwe’ but rather let the glimpse of imagery and words make his intentions known
The irony in using art to speak about social issues is that artists often tend to continue a cycle of harm by regurgitating media sentiments and violence faced by protestors or victims intentionally or unintentionally forcing their audiences to ‘relive’ those moments and go through second hand trauma
this reinforces the idea that systemic issues are incidental by the lack of critical thought applied overall within the image sharing
it helps not to completely avoid exposing the violence that comes with some of our lived experiences — our lives are brutal — however sensitivity will always go a long way in representation and the external portrayals of stories
although we amass power and control in different ways
the understanding of those dynamics and our positions should encourage caution in our minds rather than risk taking or “making statements” at the expense of our communities
Reforming Nigeria’s police force would need a lot more time and work than what has been seen in the last year
police brutality is a global phenomenon in itself
Drawing from my experience as a South African
I can imagine that it would take decades to relieve our armed forces
of the idea that citizens inherently need to be controlled and that violence is the only and most effective way to do so
I take this moment to draw on the parallels that our majority black countries find themselves revolving around – the notion that colonisation did not only inflict violence but it also taught it

A glance at the contemporary media landscape in South Africa conjures up images of newsstands littered with political scandal
criminally bad tabloid journalism and bland design after bland design
It’s no wonder that mainstream media can often leave a sour taste in consumers’ mouths as it’s all too apparent that these publications

Ojok Ocan, Silas Dada, Phillip Oluyide, Dapo Adeyemi and Bertrand Ozumba are some of the geoscience scholars who have signed up to speak at a symposium on Contemporary Geosciences in Africa, scheduled to take place at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, southwestern Nigeria, in May 2016.
The event, which will hold on May 31, 2016, will feature papers on The Mother Rock: Developments in Basement Geology (2) Innovations in Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation (3) Aviable policy framework for solid minerals exploration and exploitation and (4) Strategy for a sustainable, robust geoscience manpower development.
These presentations will be part of a book, for which a First call for contributions of research and technical papers has been made.
Three petroleum related organisations are involved in one way or another in the activities. They include the Petroleum Training Development Fund (PTDF), the Nigerian Mining and Geoscience Society(NMGS) and the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE).
The book is proposed to cover ALL aspects of Nigerian geology, including the basement (Igneous and metamorphic) and their economic potentials including solid minerals, as well as the stratigraphy, sedimentology and petroleum systems of Nigeria’s sedimentary basins and petroleum and potentials. It is expected to highlight concepts and research output in hydrogeology, applied geophysics and geochemistry as they apply to the improved understanding of the geology of Nigeria.
Omar Morufu Rahaman is a widely quoted expert on the Precambrian (the earliest rock unit) geology of Africa and has served in the academia, mainly at the Obafemi Awolowo University for over 40 years, but perhaps his most distinguishing trait is the training of geoscientists. Professor Rahaman’s main ambition is to produce high quality geoscience graduates that can be employed anywhere in the world.
For nine years he was the coordinator of the aptitude examination used by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) to select beneficiaries of the Funds Overseas Scholarship Scheme for the skills acquisition at the Master’s level in selected Universities in Britain.
For the unique anniversary of the day of his birth, the planned activities include
“The proposed book will be a follow up to the publication of May 2006 published to mark Professor Rahaman’s 60th birthday anniversary”, notes Kehinde Olafiranye, who is the secretary of the committee and anchor person driving the project.
Industry professionals, academics and students are invited to submit full length papers that relate to any of the themes: (1) The Mother Rock: Developments in Basement Geology (2) Innovations in petroleum Exploration and Exploitation (3) A viable policy framework for Solid minerals exploration and exploitation in Nigeria (4) Strategy for a sustainable, robust geoscience manpower development.
