Arizona Prevention Research Center researchers meet with community action board members from El Rio Health
Every project at the center is done in collaboration with community health workers and community partners
locals who serve as a bridge between patients and their health care providers
The town sits about a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border and is known to many by its Spanish name
Growing up there, Ada M. Wilkinson-Lee made regular trips across the border to visit family
I can really immerse myself in both cultures," she said
"But I also saw the reality of the differences between what it's like to live in the U.S
She also experienced how the people of the tight-knit community Pueblo Nuevo took care of one another
especially regarding public health matters
She watched her father and his coworkers at the local copper smelter go on strike with the common goals of equitable wages and a healthier
Fast forward a few decades to when Wilkinson-Lee was a pre-med junior at the University of Arizona, taking classes in the Department of Mexican American Studies with an emphasis on Latino health. The first public health class she took was taught by Antonio Estrada
a professor emeritus whose career has focused on Hispanic health
"I just kind of fell in love with it – it was the first time that I was seeing those connections between what is often considered traditional STEM sciences and the public health aspect of prevention science," she said
"That kind of shifted my whole mindset toward public health."
Now, as an associate professor of Mexican American studies in the U of A College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Wilkinson-Lee has focused her career on serving the public health needs of communities like Pueblo Nuevo.
"I oftentimes want to make sure that we're recognizing the cultural assets of the Mexican community and not just the deficits," she said
"What we're trying to tap into is the cultural resilience
the social support and the cultural factors that really help drive resiliency of the community
I was able to experience that firsthand living on the border
seeing how people come together and help each other."
Wilkinson-Lee's latest project, which she helps lead as a co-principal investigator in the Arizona Prevention Research Center
sets out to address loneliness and social isolation among older residents in border communities and rural communities across Arizona
The project is called Together Across Generations (TAG): Implementing
Translating and Disseminating Evidence-Based Strategies to Reduce Social Isolation and Loneliness and Promote Intergenerational Connections Across Arizona
The Arizona Prevention Research Center, known as AzPRC, is based in the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and has supported research projects to address health disparities in communities across Arizona for more than 25 years.
The center's work relies mainly on funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
which is funding the TAG project on loneliness and social isolation with roughly $5 million over the next five years
The funding cycle for the project officially begins next month.
The project follows a 2023 report by the U.S
surgeon general that shows loneliness may be a better predictor for death than smoking
Ada Wilkinson-Lee has been a terrific leader of the most recent and new core research projects of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded Arizona Prevention Research Center," said TAG project co-investigator Scott Carvajal
a professor in the Zuckerman College of Public Health and co-director of the AzPRC with Maia Ingram
The TAG project will involve partnering with agencies and community members in three rural Arizona counties –Yuma
Santa Cruz and Cochise – as well as the Hualapai Tribe
whose homelands are in northwestern Arizona.
have existing programs designed to address loneliness and social isolation
Those include intergenerational programs that help local youth teach technology skills to older adults so they can stay connected virtually to friends and family
elders provide lessons about cultural and traditional knowledge
hope to extend the reach of such programs.
"We're just coming in to provide financial resources and to collect data on the folks that are already integrated and using these interventions," Wilkinson-Lee said
"We're really a technical resource to them."
She and her colleagues will also help develop
conduct and evaluate a statewide plan to raise social isolation and loneliness awareness and surveillance
and encourage the adoption of intergenerational programs to reduce social isolation and loneliness with a focus on rural
Wilkinson-Lee and her colleagues in AzPRC specialize in community-based participatory research
which involves working closely with members of a community to develop plans to address that community's public health issues.
This type of work is central to Wilkinson-Lee's research
locals who serve as "the conduit between the patient and the health care provider" and are commonly known by their Spanish name
"We see promotoras as the bedrock of all of the projects that we work on," Wilkinson-Lee said
adding that many of them are volunteers or work for low wages simply because they want to help their communities.
About 10 community health workers will sit on a community action board that will guide the TAG project on loneliness and isolation
The board will advise the AzPRC partners on each community's needs as the project moves forward over the next five years
especially for a land-grant institution like the U of A
"If we do research for the sake of research
then we're missing the mark and we're not applying the findings to the communities that are being impacted," she said
We should be tapping into the expertise that's in these communities."

Lourdes ‘Lulu’ Alvarez stands in front of her Pueblo Nuevo restaurant
Some customers call her “doctor” because her pozole heals what ails them
That’s what Lourdes “Lulu” Alvarez tells those who say they are feeling a little under the weather at Pueblo Nuevo in Portage Park
the Mexican restaurant she runs with her husband
Alvarez said some call her “doctor” because she has the remedy: a steaming bowl of pozole verde “para el corazon,” for the heart
sees the people who walk into the intimate eatery
She remembers many by name and doesn’t hesitate to forgive a bill
but you shouldn’t treat a customer like a customer
you have to treat them like part of your family,” Alvarez said in Spanish
Pueblo Nuevo has kept scores of regulars coming back
It has formed deep ties within the community
which in recent years has stepped up for Alvarez and the restaurant when they needed a hand
Lourdes ‘Lulu’ Alvarez stands behind the counter at Pueblo Nuevo restaurant
where’s she’s built a loyal following by treating her customers like family
Alvarez felt as if “her world was ending.” She underwent surgery to remove non-cancerous tumors that her doctors had discovered
The family started an online fundraiser, and the community helped them collect thousands to help cover her expenses
Alvarez said the restaurant survived thanks in part to a local who helped it boost its internet presence and take online orders
“I thank them with all of my heart,” Alvarez said of her loyal customers
“We would be nothing without their support.”

The chicken pozole is the standout dish at Pueblo Nuevo restaurant
“When people come and tell me they like my pozole
I call my mom and thank her for teaching me,” Alvarez said
The restaurant is also named after a town in Guanajuato
Another popular dish is the pambazo (named after the bread it uses)
a sandwich that shares some DNA with a Chicago classic: the Italian beef
While the Chicago staple is typically baptized in roasting juices after the meat is added and before it’s served
The bread is drenched in a red guajillo pepper sauce and then fried before it’s filled
It’s traditionally stuffed with potatoes and chorizo
but can be made with different proteins which are then topped with sour cream
The sandwich is a popular street food item in Mexico City
but hasn’t crossed over quite like tacos or tortas have
Success didn’t come overnight for Alvarez and her husband
they’d try to lure people inside by handing out samples of their food to passersby
And that’s how the beautiful thing started.”
In the last few months they’ve added a version of mole sauce to their menu that though simplified
Alvarez said the mole enchiladas have been flying out the door
The food is what turned Patrick Georgett into a loyal customer
but he was more impressed that Alvarez never forgot him after he placed his first order seven years ago

“She remembered my name from Day One,” Georgett said
adding that eating at the restaurant now feels “like ordering from your friends
it’s not like ordering from a regular restaurant.”
and it’s become a can’t-miss place for them whenever they’re in town from New Jersey
The story is common among the restaurant’s loyal patrons
Christmas cards and notes with kind messages from regulars line the edges of a small rectangular mirror hanging inside
a regular and Portage Park resident of 38 years
usually picks a table near the kitchen to chat with Lara and Alvarez
He said he’s glad to see the two doing so well
they are very good people,” Rodriguez said

Located in Rochester's El Camino Neighborhood
completion of two-phase Pueblo Nuevo Development creates 104 affordable
10,000 square-foot community center and on-site services
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced completion of a $13 million affordable housing development in Rochester's El Camino neighborhood
Pueblo Nuevo Phase II created 29 affordable and supportive homes and converted a vacant warehouse into a 10,000-square-foot community center
Pueblo Nuevo Phases I and II provide a total of 104 affordable and supportive homes as part of the vision plan for revitalizing the El Camino neighborhood
affordable housing with access to the resources they need to succeed," Governor Hochul said. "Our investments in El Camino have created more than just new homes for Rochester families; we are also ensuring the neighborhood has the services
and features that will sustain this community in the long term."
"Supportive housing projects like the Pueblo Nuevo project are critical to bringing back neighborhoods like El Camino in Rochester that have long been neglected," said Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. "This affordable housing development will provide 29 new homes to people who otherwise would not be able to live there
and the new community center will provide a place for community members to gather
This is just one of the many projects that are restoring the historic El Camino district."

Grecia Chavez has been dancing Mexican folk dance her whole life
“Ballet folclórico has always been very important to me,” Chavez
it’s always been something that’s been a part of my life and a part of my routine
my grandma dances and my sisters dance.”
Chavez teaches dance for Ballet Folclórico Pueblo Nuevo
a Mexican folk dance group of children and teenage dancers ranging from 4 to 18 years old
The group performs at community events during holidays such as Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
They recently performed a dance celebrating Día de los Muertos at the Nevada Museum of Art

“We like to bring a part of Mexico to them.”
Ballet Folclórico Pueblo Nuevo is one of few groups that dance Mexican folk dance in Reno
Mariano Lemus is director of Teatro Sangre Latina
a local theater group that performs plays to educate people about the Latino culture
The theater group also encompasses two dance groups
Danza Azteca Aztlan and Ballet Folclórico Internacional de Reno—made up of both kids and adult dancers
had the idea to create plays based on historical events and customs from his home country
“We want to augment the love of the culture
the love of the second homeland for the younger generations to help them identify themselves with their roots,” Lemus said in Spanish
“They need to know about their roots and feel proud of it.”
Is it inclusive enough?: Hispanic Heritage Month highlights culture, accomplishments
he found there were no groups or organizations that promoted the Latino culture in the area
he helped establish Ballet Folclórico Internacional de Reno
Lemus said he believes much of the younger generations
particularly during Hispanic Heritage Month
“It’s sad because in a way we lose a little bit more of our culture,” Lemus said
then they can forget about their traditions
their culture and knowledge of their ancestral history,” he said
“We need to demonstrate to them how immense the culture is in Mexico and how beautiful our traditions are.”
Lemus said he hopes his students will want to learn more about their culture and hopefully travel through Mexico when they grow up
He said he believes in teaching kids they have two countries they can call home
One opened doors and opportunities for a better future
“They need to learn about and love one country equally as the other,” Lemus said
“That’s a wonderful thing.”

that her daughters would become depressed if they didn’t dance
I didn’t see much culture,” Chavez said
Chavez found a place along South Wells Avenue—often considered as the hub for the Latino community—and called it Casa Cultural de Reno
She currently uses the space twice a week as a dance studio so her students can rehearse
Each dance they do represents a different state within Mexico
“Chiapas is a region where they dance in a way that represents the expression of birds,” Chavez said
the movements are like imitating the birds dancing
the traditional dance is called La Danza de los Viejitos (The Dance of the Old Men)
all of which are handmade and imported from Mexico
about the importance of teaching children how to dance
“I feel very satisfied,” Chavez said of her daughter’s ability to teach kids
“I tell her that what we’re seeding in these children is something great for our community
The children who are dancing will always remember these dances
They have that little seed implanted in them
and maybe one of them will continue to inculcate this art.”
Chavez said it has been difficult to teach children who aren’t familiar with the tradition of Mexican folk dance because many don’t even understand the music
She said some of her students have trouble expressing the dance to an audience
“We have to explain to them and show them how to feel the music,” Chavez said
“We are able to feel it because we grew up that way

He said many don’t even know the origin of Mexican folk dance
they performed a series of dances that represented 10 different states within Mexico
Lemus is also planning on having his dancers perform in celebration of Dia de los Muertos in early November
Their performance will be a mix of theater and dance
His goal is to teach others about the history of Día de los Muertos
in which families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes music
Lemus said he remembers running through the streets of his hometown and smelling the overwhelming scent of flowers and marigold—often used in altars honoring deceased loved ones
The bright yellow and orange colors signify the start of Día de los Muertos festivities
“You would make the pilgrimage to the cemetery
and you would straighten up the graves of your relatives,” Lemus said
Family members typically clean and decorate the gravesites of loved one with skulls
He hopes the group’s upcoming dance and theatrical performance will allow others to experience Día de los Muertos the way he did when he was growing up
“I want to help kids do something positive and help them learn about something beautiful about their culture [through Mexican folk dance],” Lemus said
“We don’t just teach them about the dances
we teach them a little bit about the history and the culture
the basics of what they should know like where these dances originated from

This Pueblo Indian settlement in northern New Mexico
consisting of ceremonial buildings and facilities
and multi-storey adobe dwellings built in terraced tiers
exemplifies the living culture of a group of present-day Pueblo Indian people at Taos Pueblo
As one of a series of settlements established in the late 13th and early 14th centuries in the valleys of the Rio Grande and its tributaries that have survived to the present day
Taos Pueblo represents a significant stage in the history of urban
community and cultural life and development in this region
Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited and is the largest of these Pueblos that still exist
with its North and South Houses rising to heights of five storeys
Taos Pueblo and the people of the Pueblo itself claim an aboriginal presence in the Taos Valley since time immemorial
whose culture and community are active and thriving
shows many similarities to settlement sites of the ancestral Pueblo people that are preserved in nearby places such Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde
It is nevertheless unique to this region and not derived from Mesoamerican precedents
The property includes the walled village with two multi-storey adobe structures
seven kivas (underground ceremonial chambers)
the ruins of the first church built in the 1600s and the present-day San Geronimo Catholic Church
The Taos mountains (Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains) provide the setting for the Pueblo
Within these mountains is the 19,425-ha Taos Pueblo Blue Lake Wilderness Area
a resource of critical importance to the Pueblo’s living culture and agricultural sustainability
intrinsically linked to the Pueblo’s culture
is the source of a stream that flows through the settlement
Criterion (iv): Taos Pueblo is a remarkable example of a traditional type of architectural ensemble from the pre-Hispanic period of the Americas unique to this region and one which
because of the living culture of its community
has successfully retained most of its traditional forms up to the present day
Within the boundaries of Taos Pueblo are located all the elements necessary to understand and express the Outstanding Universal Value of the property
including the adobe-walled village with its important historic and prehistoric features inside and outside the walled area
The two main adobe complexes retain their traditional three-dimensional layout
Additions and some limited use of non-native materials have not fundamentally altered the visual impression of the Pueblo or its striking evidence of ancient building traditions
techniques and materials have resulted in harmonious construction throughout the walled precinct
The 19.01-ha property is of sufficient size to adequately ensure the complete representation of the features and processes that convey the property’s significance
and does not suffer from adverse effects of development and/or neglect
There is currently no buffer zone for the property
Taos Pueblo is authentic in terms of its location and setting
uses and functions as well as spirit and feeling
The Pueblo has been continuously occupied and cared for by the traditional and culturally-based community
Adobe requires regular maintenance through periodic replastering
which is undertaken as needed by tribal members using traditional materials and methods
Some European-style framed doors and windows were introduced in the 20th century
The community maintains controls to protect its traditions
including the prohibition within the walled area of electrical power lines and piped water supply
An increasing number of Pueblo residents have homes outside the walled area; however
the old village still serves as the most important focus for intra-village interaction and cultural activities
The known and potential threats to the authenticity of the property include the following: the growth of the nearby municipality of Taos
which places pressure on the Pueblo to modernize; economic conditions that cause tourism impacts; planned expansion of the existing Taos Regional Airport; and environmental stresses such as forest fires
Taos Pueblo is governed by the independent and autonomous Tribal Council
Individual rooms are owned by tribal families but the structures are owned by the community as a whole and are managed as such by the Pueblo’s governing body
The Governor’s Office is responsible for the day-to-day management and protection of the property
The Pueblo holds the status of a limited-sovereign nation within the boundaries of the United States of America
The site is part of the original Spanish Land Grant (within the Pueblo’s aboriginal lands)
which is held in trust by the federal government for the benefit of the Pueblo
The federal government has a trust responsibility for the protection and preservation of the Pueblo as a World Heritage Site
This responsibility is fulfilled with respect for its status as a self-governed community
The Pueblo’s designation as a National Historic Landmark (1960) requires that any federal government undertakings that may affect or impact the property must be carefully considered
and the federal agencies must consult with the Pueblo before initiating any action
The Pueblo has always had a comprehensive unwritten preservation strategy that is carried out by tribal members
with scrupulous respect for traditional materials and techniques
These traditions and practices have protected Taos Pueblo’s structures for centuries through an active monitoring program by the Pueblo’s traditional government and decision-making process
This ensures that the living culture and associated historic structures and landscapes are maintained and functional
The National Park Service is providing assistance to the Pueblo to develop a written management and preservation plan as well
The Pueblo attracts large numbers of visitors and has a formal tourism program which plans to establish a visitor centre
The Pueblo is closed to visitors on certain ceremonial occasions
and some areas are not accessible to visitors
Sustaining the Outstanding Universal Value of the property over time will require protecting it from the continuing challenges of adverse effects
which include environmental stresses such as erosion from rain and snow
It will also require ensuring that any developments within or near Taos Pueblo do not have negative impacts on the property’s values

As this new academic year takes off and new students begin their college journey on campuses across the country
the Avanzando Through College program facilitators are starting to welcome their new students into the UnidosUS and Avanzando familia
The Avanzando program offers monthly workshops and events focused on topics identified by researchers
and students as being vital to college retention and success of Latino students
The program’s implementation model also reflects the comprehensive approach to serving first-generation college students
Our 23 Affiliates and higher institution partners are kicking off their orientation sessions and first workshop sessions this month
in which students will have the opportunity to explore characteristics and experiences that make them uniquely who they are
“My work is driven by my passion and love for my community
Through this program I hope my students find power in their own experiences and identities as Latinos to successfully navigate college.” – Third Year Avanzando Facilitator Ebelin Gomez
At Pueblo Nuevo-Camino Nuevo in Los Angeles
students recalled their vibrant homes and cultures through the “I Am Poem” activity
Students also started to discuss their goals for the semester and wrote them down on an Encanto-themed flower so they could be reminded every time they came in for their session
the Pueblo Nuevo-Camino Nuevo facilitator’s main goal is that her students feel empowered and uplifted when they step into a predominantly white institution and know they have an entire community cheering them on

A much-needed school in Pueblo is now open
A ribbon cutting was held today for the new Nettie Freed K-8 Expeditionary School on the north side of the city
This school replaces Heroes Academy which was demolished in 2020. The new school was built thanks to a voter-approved bond measure from 2019
"I've heard from lots of people who are in the neighborhood
to have a school of any kind back here where there have been one for so long especially to have another middle school option for students," said Nocolas Roberts
The school cost a little over $30 million and took about two years to build. Freed is one of five new schools to be built from the bond measure.____

Dec 3 2014 (IPS) - The town’s dynamic mayor
assumed the commitment of turning the Honduran municipality of Victoria into a model of food and nutritional security and environmental protection by means of municipal public policies based on broad social and community participation and international development aid
The initiative began to be put into practice four months ago
It was inspired by what the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) achieved in the Tolupan indigenous community of Pueblo Nuevo
a village located 15 km from the centre of Victoria
In that tribe – as the Tolupan refer to each one of their communities – whose official name is Las Vegas de Tepemechín de Pueblo Nuevo
29 children overcame malnutrition thanks to a comprehensive food security plan implemented over the last two year
of what they have managed to do in such a short time,” the mayor told Tierramérica
“I grew up near the Tolupan and now that I’m mayor
I want to extend this experience throughout the entire municipality of Victoria
“They have been empowered so much by their experience that one day I went there to cut sugarcane and I left the stalks in the street
I was so surprised when a boy came up and said ‘No Mr
we don’t dump garbage here!’ That day I understood that everything they say about this village is true,” he added
The tribe’s achievements are based on the use of good practices in agriculture and the development of a nutritious diet
Pueblo Nuevo is now a model of food security and nutrition in the eyes of local and international bodies
thanks to the local indigenous community’s efforts to improve their quality of life
and to their new level of organisation and discipline
The swift transformations have included: clean houses
which families no longer share with their animals
the abandonment of the slash-and-burn technique to clear fields for planting
family gardens and reliable production of staple crops like maize and beans
“We have shown that we indigenous people are not lazy,” a member of the local Tolupan community
“The people from FAO taught us how to manage the soil
instead of living with our animals [in the huts]
Similar remarks were made by other members of the community
The Tolupan live in the mountains of the northern department or province of Yoro and in the central department of Francisco Morazán
They are one of the few indigenous communities in this country who have preserved their native language
The population of the country is 90 percent mestizo or mixed-race
The people of Pueblo Nuevo are so proud of what they have achieved that they want to publish a book to tell their story
“This is important,” another villager
“They say next year we’ll have electricity
that electricity can be good but it can also be bad
Bad because if we only sit around watching movies
it can lead us to development – not to become rich
The municipality of Victoria is home to 29,840 people
As a result of the Pueblo Nuevo success story
the mayor’s office did not hesitate to accept the FAO-SPFS proposal to implement the Municipal Food and Nutritional Security Programme (Promusan) as a public policy
Promusan is a FAO-SPFS initiative being carried out in 73 of the 298 municipalities of this Central American country
agency identified serious food security problems
The programme is financed by the municipal governments and the FAO
Promusan has already chalked up significant accomplishments by bringing together the community
the local government and international development cooperation agencies that are working in different villages
is to transfer the methodology used by SPFS and other agencies and institutions that work in the area to rural development
environmental and food and nutritional security projects
Amaya public secondary school with an agricultural orientation which
due to the almost nonexistent support from the state
survives thanks to the hard work of the teachers and the people of Victoria themselves
who have seen the students applying theory in practice
teaching sustainable agricultural techniques to local farmers
“I used to think agriculture was just about using the machete and hoe
but now I know that’s not true,” Josué Cruz
“I learned to help farmers improve the soil and their crops,” said the student
who is about to graduate from the school with a certificate as a forestry technician
“Here in our school we run our own farm and we even have a water harvester that FAO gave us to irrigate our crops.”
Victoria is a municipality rich in minerals like gold
it will soon have a nearby hydroelectric dam
“but one that respects the environment,” the mayor pointed out
“My aim with Promusan is to change people’s lives
make Victoria a green municipality; we are the least polluted part of the entire department
we want to have health and education; we want to be a model municipality in Honduras,” Martínez said
he is concluding an assessment to identify the most pressing needs
and he has brought together cooperation agencies to avoid duplication of efforts and to outline areas of action “to not just create projects and throw funding around any which way.”
two Tolupan Indians are involved in the work in the city government
FAO’s Elvín Soler told Tierramérica
“they’re working with a strategic plan
and everyone wants to follow the Pueblo Nuevo model.”
Many things in Victoria have changed: more people now pay their taxes as they see the returns in roads
who was reelected for a second four-year term that began this year
said he does not want to “rest on my laurels.”

Works are well underway for the Corozal Sarteneja Road Project in northern Belize
Despite ground being broken in November 2019
the actual work did not get underway until 2023
The project is scheduled to be completed in a few months as explained by the government’s Engineer Coordinator
MIDH: “The Sarteneja project is progressing well
As you’re aware that project involves the upgrading of 42 kilometers of road from Corozal to Sarteneja inclusive of the construction of two new bridges
So these two new bridges are basically to replace the ferries at Laguna Seca and also at Pueblo Nuevo
The bridge at Laguna Seca has been completed and that has been used by the public as we speak
We are currently working on completing the Pueblo Nuevo Bridge and that is the notice that we sent out whereby the last seven girders were being transported
The overall project is about 71% completed whereby we have paved approximately 30 kilometers of the 42 kilometers in total and as I said we have completed one bridge and the second bridge structure is about 75% completed
Once we place those girders it’s only of the deck formation that is remaining and also the approach
And then the last section from Pueblo Nuevo into Corozal Town
We have an unexpected completion date of November
we anticipate that the bridge itself will be completed by the end of August so that we will eliminate now both ferries from that area and we don’t need to use those ferries again.”
Another project that is well underway is the J and W Bridge in Belmopan. According to Moody
this too should be completed by the end of the year
MIDH: “The J&W bridge that is the structure that has been constructed in Belmopan in the J&W area
That bridge structure is about 80% completed
We have installed those girders as well last week
So all that is remaining for that is the deck and the rails and the approach to that
So with that said that area that is usually susceptible to flooding should not be susceptible to flooding because you will have a bridge that you’ll be able to access in both directions and the flood waters will be able to pass through towards Mount Pleasant
So residents living within that area should have a free flow of traffic movement once that bridge structure is completed because we have elevated that bridge structure I think about nine to 10 feet above existing creek level.”
Moody is attached to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

At least 30 families residing in Pueblo Nuevo de Villa Duarte
were affected by a fire that occurred this Monday
we only heard the voice of my mother who said that something was burning
only to save our lives with what we have on and with us,” said one of those affected
There were no fatalities from the accident
lamenting that everything was reduced to ashes
said that “we could only save the lives of our children.” So far
Local March 16
said that “we could only save the lives of our children.”
The only thing that the 19 families living in Pueblo Nuevo de Villa Duarte have is hunger
after being affected yesterday by a large fire that burned their houses
indicated that yesterday the Government sent a truck with food at two in the afternoon and did not receive any help again
Molinuevo said that the 24 children and their parents remain hungry this Tuesday because
He explained that they built a zinc shack in an area of the burned space to spend the night
the other fire victims said they hope that President Abinader or a mourner will donate food and some clothes as other neighbors accompany the Santo Domingo Este City Hall to collect debris

Dominican Republic - Former NBA star Allen Iverson is joining a regional basketball league in the Dominican Republic for a month
Team president Milton Nunez said Thursday that the 36-year-old guard would play for Pueblo Nuevo
He declined to say how much Iverson will be paid
Iverson is to arrive Sunday and play for his second-place team that same day against GUG in Santiago province
"He and his agent have told us that he has been training a lot and that even if he hasn't been playing anywhere
he has what we need to help Pueblo Nuevo," Nunez said
Iverson had been considered a potential recruit for the Santo Domingo Lions last year
Iverson left the NBA in 2010 and spent part of that year playing in Turkey
The installation of the Laguna Seca and Pueblo Nuevo bridges in Corozal allows for easier access to the surrounding areas
providing a more efficient route for more commuters
While the opening of the Laguna Seca Bridge was received positively by residents
some noted that the feeling was bittersweet as they said goodbye to the ferry that has served them for many years
Project Engineer Michelan Gilharry told us what now happens to the ferry
“So the area that the bridge is located is between the Chunox area of the Corozal district
The importance of it is because this acted as a bypass in the sense that you didn’t have to go around through the Progresso village to reach all the way to Sarteneja for the Corozal town area
we know it’s a bit of a bittersweet moment in that sense with the ferry
but I’m sure that everybody is relieved in a sense that their time is being reduced with respect to the road
They have a free flow and that’s the intention of the project
What the ministry has intention with the ferry
I believe we will try to salvage it and reuse it in other lake locations that it may be needed
