Rayon is one of the most versatile fabrics, yet it remains somewhat of a mystery. That’s partly because of its remarkable ability to shape-shift and imitate other fabrics. Rayon has been known to take on the properties of silk
it can be used in nearly any type of clothing
This can make it challenging to pin down what it is
and what weather it’s best suited for
To help boost your familiarity with this ubiquitous fabric
keep reading to see everything you need to know about rayon
rayon is a fabric made from purified cellulose fibers
which are typically created from wood pulp
Though rayon is derived from natural materials
so it’s considered to be a semi-synthetic fabric
Secondary types of rayon include modal rayon (typically made from beech trees) and lyocell (seen in everything from denim to dress shirts)
Laundering rayon takes a little extra consideration
Rayon is often blended with other fabrics (such as polyester and cotton)
so washing instructions can vary significantly
While its texture and versatility make it an ideal choice for a range of apparel
and standard machine washing can cause it to stretch

The action follows a petition filed by the Association of Man-Made Fibre Industry of India and Grasim Industries Limited
who have alleged that the domestic industry is suffering material injury due to dumped imports from China
VFY above 75 deniers (excluding yarn produced through Spool Spun Technology and certain embroidery threads)
falls under Chapter 54 of the Customs Tariff Act and is primarily imported under various subheadings of tariff item 5403
the dumped imports from China are being sold in the Indian market at prices significantly below the normal value
resulting in price suppression and serious injury to the domestic industry
The data submitted suggests rising import volumes
and financial losses including negative returns on capital employed
The dumping margin—defined as the difference between the normal value and export price—has been found to be above the de minimis level
indicating the presence of dumping as per Indian trade remedy laws
The DGTR will examine the period from October 1
with injury data being reviewed for the past three financial years as well
The domestic industry asserts that VFY produced in India is technically and commercially substitutable with the imported product and should be treated as a ‘like article’ under the Rules
The investigation aims to determine the existence and extent of dumping
the injury caused to the domestic industry
and whether the imposition of anti-dumping duties is warranted
duties may be levied to level the playing field for domestic manufacturers

AEC Magazine has been keeping an eye on all the BIM start-ups that have entered the space over the last few years
While our gaze has focussed on the 3D modelling world
software developers have not just been concentrating on 3D
This week marks the official launch and announcement of a €4 million investment raise in Rayon
a French start-up that is looking to take on 2D AEC CAD by utilising the cloud and offering a fresh outlook to bring new smart capabilities
effortless collaboration and ease of use to layout design
Rayon’s interface and simplicity is exquisite
why do professional 2D CAD packages still cost so much
most CAD tools had enough features to do more than was required to produce 2D drawings
full AutoCAD is £1,986 per year ($1,975 per year in the USA) and LT comes in at a reasonable £486 ($490 in USA) a year
There may well be considerable savings to be had by moving elsewhere
such as BricsCAD Pro (£1,073) and lite (£517)
Dassault Systemès DraftSight at £380 and Ares Commander (Desktop
Mobile and Cloud) from Graebert at £300 (even with floating licences)
2D CAD will always be important to the industry but other than familiarity of interface and perhaps any specialised in-house customisation
all the products listed above are perfectly interchangeable as professional drafting tools
Rayon lives in the cloud and is an accurate drawing and space planning tool aimed at the AEC space
Rayon enables drawings to be created and annotated and comes with lots of blocks and libraries of furniture and commonly used items
it enables real-time simultaneous collaboration on drawings with team members from all over the planet
This means you can draw a layout or feasibility study and share it with a client and discuss the design and make changes in real-time
sending files around and the need for additional mark-up tools
This all adds time delays and ultimately adds cost
Rayon’s unique selling point is that it does design
and distribution via the power of the cloud
As you would expect there are typical tools like walls
with many options to change or customise the look and feel with colour or hatching fill
CAD users will be used to the standard scale
Blocks and library components are loaded per drawing
so a sub-selection of what you will use are immediately available – which saves trawling through huge libraries
Items like doors and windows just get dragged and dropped to the canvas and these automatically create openings which can be scaled in-place
like furniture can be edited and scaled on the fly
with dynamic feedback at the point of the mouse
Zones are allocated to enclosed wall spaces
These are auto recognised and just require a simple click
hatched or images applied (like a floor tiling)
Layers are a common concept for component organisation and follow common CAD logic
Comments and annotations start with dropping a pin
whereupon the user can add an associated comment
There’s also freehand drawing to show intent
On the top right of the interface there’s a share button where members can be added
These can also be made public through a URL link
It’s also possible to make tables for lists and spreadsheets from drawing data
users can add property information such as a price to furniture blocks
and the system will then count and tabulate the number and value
Rayon’s Pages feature is the equivalent of a layout tool
Drawing sizes can be allocated and scale chosen as well as title blocks
The system supports nested blocks and multiple pages can be created and outputted simultaneously
it is improving month on month with new features
the basics have been done and it’s very impressive
Is it a replacement for a full pro-drafting tool with four decades of feature development
but I would hazard a guess that for 80% of drawing users
or has capabilities which would be a great add-on to current DWG workflows
plus the speed and collaboration capabilities make me excited about 2D again – which
With so many start-ups concentrating on delivering new and novel approaches to rapid modelling
there seems to be this emerging ‘BIM Lite’ genre of products appearing
While the industry has been trying to tame BIM with varying degrees of success, for many firms and projects, Rayon, Snaptrude, Arcol or CoDesign may well be applications in which ideas can be captured and shared much quicker than by traditional BIM tools
One part of this is having interfaces decluttered as fresh code
another is limited feature sets of new apps
but it’s also down to recognising that not all nails need a Revit hammer
At some point these tools will converge and be part of the rich tapestry of tools available to designers
This week Rayon announced it has raised €4 million in seed funding
which brings total funding to €5.75 million
Initial investors include Norman Foster and Rasmus Andersson (Figma)
In this latest round comes Northzone and Foundamental
the latter of which is also an investor in Snaptrude and Speckle
The new seed money will be used to grow the engineering team and gain growth and traction
Rayon, offering to be the ‘Figma for 2D CAD’, joins the fresh start ups of Arcol and Snaptrude which aim to be the Figma for the BIM world. (N.B. Figma is a cloud-based application for user interface and user experience design
with a big emphasis on real-time collaboration)
this new batch of cloud-centric start-ups may currently seem to be feature-poor tools which have several good collaboration features
they are going to become serious competitors should they gain any traction and be able to keep up aggressive development plans
By opting for the cloud and browser deployment
it’s much easier to start fresh and build up
rather than try and bolt on cloud kludges to desktop code
but it’s been well thought through and implemented
It’s intriguing that Norman Foster has even chosen to invest in this start-up
but the fact that the Rayon team has considerable AI experience
but has not yet deployed any of their know-how in the platform
means that one can only wonder at what capabilities will be coming to the cloud near you soon
with the limitation of three models with up to five simultaneous editors
‘Pro’ is €29 per month with unlimited models and five editors
while ‘Team’ is €59 per month for unlimited usage with dedicated support and Single Sign On

Turning trees into textiles is linked to historical atrocities and environmental harm
But any plant-based material can potentially become viscose-rayon
Rayon is a soft, silky fabric that is perhaps the most confusing of all the textiles. It’s sometimes called viscose, modal, lyocell, tencel, acetate or bamboo. It tends to feel denser and more fluid than cotton or linen, but even this depends on how it’s been extracted and spun.
The best way to understand rayon is to consider it an umbrella term for textiles that are made from cellulose, the building block of most plants. It can be extracted from straw, cotton waste and other natural materials, but in the case of rayon, it mostly comes from the wood pulp of pine, eucalyptus or beech.
It is often marketed as an eco-friendly fibre because it is made from natural, renewable materials (trees). But, like a lot of sustainable materials, there are a few dark clouds over its credentials.
Read moreAccording to the not-for-profit Canopy
200 million trees are felled each year to make textiles
Of the 6.5 million metric tonnes of rayon produced every year
almost half comes from ancient and endangered forests
Forests are integral to the fight against global warming because carbon is stored in the woody biomass of tree trunks and branches
shrubs and soil that make up the forest floor
the link between rayon and deforestation is a particularly sad truth and one of fashion’s best disguised secrets
says in this forest-based fabric supply chain there is an opportunity to steer investments towards solutions and away from problems
“It is like we are standing on a cliff edge and we have an opportunity to build a fence at the top versus a hospital at the bottom.”

200 million trees are felled each year to make textiles (beautiful as they are)
Photograph: Getty ImagesHazardous waste turned the river water dark redProduction of rayon has approximately doubled in the last three decades and its percentage of the global fibre market is continuing to grow (in 2019 it was 6.4%)
Carr says Canopy is working to ensure this growth is not facilitated by further deforestation
Their work is at least partially responsible for the many fashion brands describing their rayon
viscose or modal products as FSC or PEFC certified – meaning it has come from a sustainably managed forest or plantation
The carbon footprint of rayon is further complicated by the process of turning wood into a textile
converting a tree into fabric can be highly toxic to both workers and the environment
Rayon also has links to some of the world’s darkest history
the Nazis forced prisoners to labour in rayon factories
There are accounts of the chemicals (sulphuric acid) burning holes in their uniforms
causing injuries anywhere it touched the skin
while emissions resulted in neurological side effects like blindness and psychosis
These issues have persisted into the 21st century. A 2017 report by the Changing Markets Foundation found visible and highly odorous pollution on production sites in India that belonged to the Aditya Birla Group – the world’s biggest viscose producer.
Hazardous waste had turned the river water dark red; an independent laboratory test revealed that the air had 125 times the level of carbon disulphide recommended by the WHO; the surrounding villages did not have access to safe drinking water and, in one alarming instance, 60 villagers fell seriously ill and lost the ability to walk. Aditya Birla Group denied that these problems were linked to their operations.
However, similar problems have been reported across China and other parts of India and Indonesia – and the issues are not limited to one company.
Read moreThe Changing Markets Foundation report made several recommendations on how to make viscose rayon production more sustainable
energy consumption and workers’ health and safety
The foundation suggested implementing closed-loop manufacturing to ensure the waste from the chemicals was recovered and recycled where possible
and that the exhaust air was condensed and captured to recover the emissions of carbon disulphide and reuse it
By 2020 Aditya Birla Group announced that it has set a target for all of its manufacturing sites to be compliant with EU BAT standards and verified by the end of 2022
innovation platform director at Fashion for Good
says “manufacturers responsible for 50% of global viscose production have committed to responsible production”
She points to Spinnova and Infinited Fiber Company as examples of companies who implement best practice chemical management
one of the biggest viscose producers in the world
has trademarked Tencel which is also made using closed loop processes
View image in fullscreenArt deco pattern for fabric
The challenge is to make it more sustainably
Photograph: MaryliaDesign/Getty Images/iStockphotoThe report concluded that viscose has the potential to be a sustainable fibre if production was improved; alongside the responsible sourcing of raw materials
what do responsibly sourced raw materials look like
tools to set standards across different countries for responsible forest management
they guarantee traceability to ensure the source of the rayon was not an ancient or endangered forest
Pointing to the fact that trees and forests are a significant aid against a warming planet
Carr says Canopy’s priority is to ensure no viscose rayon sourcing occurs in ancient or endangered forests
But she notes certifications are constrained by scale
Each one is applied from a local viewpoint
and often the ecological considerations or planetary needs demand a more global or regional perspective
“This is not the kind of planning that voluntary certifications applied by individual corporations accomplishes,” she says
The next step is to find sourcing solutions to replace fibre from forests altogether
View image in fullscreenTheoretically all natural fabrics and even agricultural waste could be regenerated into viscose rayon
Photograph: Tetiana Garkusha/Getty Images/iStockphotoTurning old textiles into newAny plant-based material can potentially serve as a source of cellulose and be dissolved to make fibres
so theoretically all natural fabrics and even agricultural waste could be regenerated into viscose rayon
the market share of ‘recycled’ cellulose fibres is very small
but a lot of ongoing research and development means it is expected to increase significantly in coming years
Recent technological advancements have made it possible to convert some textile waste into new materials
The process can be much more efficient than converting trees because of the high cellulose content of some fibres
on average it takes 2.5–3 tonnes of trees to create 1 tonne of viscose pulp
but it takes only about 1 tonne of recycled cotton or rayon to make 1 tonne of viscose pulp
“it makes more sense to try to valorise the resources we already have via textile-to-textile recycling” instead of relying on virgin resources like trees
Considering the amount of textile waste sent to landfill every second
the notion that we can turn old textiles into new textiles with superior performance properties to synthetics is extremely interesting
Viscose is better on the body than synthetics; it breathes against the skin and does not have a complicated relationship with oil or sweat
And it doesn’t shed plastic microfibres into waterways every time it is washed
While we are in the early days of these solutions
with large-scale infrastructure required for collection
there are already innovators operating in this space
Lenzing’s Refibra line is made of approximately 30% recycled cotton
Seattle based company Evrnu launched a fabric called NuCycl that is made from recycled textile waste in April of this year
fast-fashion giant Inditex invested €100 million in Infinited Fiber
a Finnish startup that also creates fabrics from textile waste

Photograph: Black IncDespite viscose rayon’s dark and complex history
which in many ways extends into the present
If we can eliminate trees and forests from its sourcing
and further innovate production to be closed loop and non-toxic

Police FC has signed Rwandan-born forward striker Lague Byiringiro
The transfer took a dramatic twist after Rayon Sports leaders welcomed Byiringiro at Kigali International Airport on Monday
only to see him announce his arrival as a new player for Police FC hours later
29-year-old Byiringiro parted ways with Swedish second-division side Sandvikens IF last week
Despite having a two-year contract remaining from a four-year deal signed in January 2023
Byiringiro found himself without a club after being released by Sandvikens IF
Police FC had been silently negotiating with Lague while Rayon Sports thought they had secured the deal
The Kacyiru-based won the race and signed the striker on a one-and-a-half-year contract

Why Police FC Beat Rayon Sports to Byriringiro’s Signature
Police FC finished fourth in the first round of this season with 23 points
They have been looking to reinforcement of their team ahead of the 2024/25 season’s second leg as they won the recent Rwanda Peace Cup and were seeking to strengthen their squad
Lague was one of the standout players before he left the Rwandan league in 2023
He played 330 minutes in 23 appearances for Sandvikens IF in 2024
This represented a decline in his performance compared to 2023
The striker will compete for his place alongside notable players such as Fred Muhozi
depending on where Coach Vincent Mashami decides to use him
Police FC currently has one of the strongest defense units in the league
They scored 17 goals in the first round of this season and will look to improve their attacking prowess with Byiringiro’s addition
In a thrilling and crucial encounter on Matchday 18 of the Rwanda Premier League
Mukura VS stunned second-placed APR FC with a narrow 1-0 victory at the Huye International Stadium
maintaining Rayon Sports’ four-point advantage at the top of the league table
APR FC entered the match with hopes of reducing the gap between them and Rayon Sports
who had been held to a 1-1 draw by Amagaju FC the previous day
were ready to challenge the league’s powerhouses
The game kicked off with high energy and intensity
as both teams won corner kicks within the first two minutes
but neither side was able to capitalise on these early opportunities
The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when Mukura VS forward Destin Maranda found the back of the net
His well-placed strike proved to be the difference as Mukura VS took a vital 1-0 lead
with APR FC launching sustained attacking efforts
Mukura VS stood firm in defence and went into half-time still leading 1-0

APR FC made several substitutions at the start of the second half
and Ismael Pitchou Nshimirimana in place of Denis Omedi

holding on to their narrow lead through six minutes of added time
The victory sees Mukura VS climb to sixth place with 27 points
while APR FC remains in second with 37 points
Mukura VS will return to action on 26 February 2025 in the Peace Cup quarter-finals against Amagaju FC

and when Delphine folds herself into the scene to answer
her vacation is thrown into uncertainty again
The fifth film in Eric Rohmer’s “Comedies and Proverbs” series
Le Rayon vert (1986) is the meandering story of a young Parisian secretary struggling to admit her loneliness
But not just any vacation—what sets Delphine apart is her insatiable expectation of what a vacation should be
and her constant oscillation between going home early and refusing to stay home because “It’s better to wait for something than to settle for reality.” Dreaming of Antibes
Delphine rejects an invitation to camp with family in Ireland
yet when her ex’s apartment in Antibes is unavailable to borrow
she sorrowfully rejects friends’ suggestions of solutions
She is simultaneously listless and lustful
Striking for its saturated aesthetic—tangible film grain
pastel palettes with bursts of green and red
and endlessly leisurely landscapes––Le Rayon vert is a vacationless vacation that explores an age-old question: to what extent do we create our own fate and to what extent are we resigned to it
Though fate and futility are both concepts of predetermination
fate is often framed as a way to quell feelings of futility
While futility’s determinism implies an endlessness
fate’s determinism implies a finality—like vacation
Le Rayon vert illustrates and evokes the messy relationship between the two; the ways futility and fate are both synonymous and opposite
The ways that when we feel stuck like Delphine
we aspire to a future or fate that deviates from our current feelings
believing in fate implies that efforts to alter or redirect our destinies are futile
Since vacations are exercises in intentionality—a decision to splurge
and favorite places—their momentary escapism and pursuit of a perfect state of being often serves as a rich subject through which to explore fate and futility
especially since the briefness of vacation makes these themes more tangible
Vacation is a defined timeline—and despite its reputation as a momentary utopia or an escape from the métro-boulot-dodo routine
it also offers a window of clarity: an inexcusable moment to feel our own desires and pursue them
Despite the intensive planning and budgeting often required to go on vacation
vacation is a time where we ironically desire something to happen to us
We plan just enough to put ourselves in ironic positions where we can expect spontaneity and accept chance encounters
The French have a unique relationship to vacation—it is not so much a luxury as a right
School breaks every six weeks for two weeks of holiday
The city of love becomes undesirable and limited
Though Delphine’s summer vacation falls in July
While from an American perspective the necessity of vacation can seem overwrought at times
there’s both a personal and cultural weight to it—one friend even implores Delphine
“You can’t just stay in Paris for the rest of your vacation”
Delphine’s uncertainty on how to approach vacation is relatable to many—the structureless expanse of three weeks can be intimidating
especially when one’s desires and actions are in constant contradiction—for Delphine
and to meet someone new who will love her) conflict with her immediate desires for safety and familiarity
Delphine’s lifestyle is regimented by narrow tastes which only make it harder for her to give herself over to the unknown
In addition to the restricted ways in which she is willing to travel
she is vegetarian because she “enjoy[s] eating airy food,” she won’t sail because she gets seasick
and she won’t play on a swing because it makes her nauseous
Each shot of people playing—the camera sweeping across the beach as families toss around a red ball in the waves
or imitating the gaze of someone at the table
intimately hunched over the Scrabble board and inventing silly words—is followed by a shot of Delphine on her own
convinced that walking or kicking solitarily at the waves is “enough.”
Delphine is a superstitious and languid romantic
motivated by the desire for things to happen to her
she finds a green-backed playing card and flips it to reveal the queen of spades
Delphine finds a lime-colored poster: “REDISCOVER CONTACT WITH YOURSELF AND OTHERS.” At the garden party
her friends are argumentative and all tough love while they suggest ways she can meet new people—solo travel
group vacations—but Delphine becomes defensive
and pastries sit in the foreground and laundry hanging out to dry waves gently
Delphine’s emotions waver; the wind picks up
disheveling both her hair and the peaceful setting as Delphine raises her voice and fights the urge to cry (she’ll cry later
So the conversation turns to superstition and spirituality
and Delphine declares her belief in “things that just crop up out of nowhere in life”
When questioned on her relationship to traditional superstitions (like cards and stars)
I do believe in things like playing cards you find in the street.” As Rohmer highlights
Delphine believes this is more accurate than astrology because the signs she finds and interprets are more attuned to her daily experiences; if only she can find the signs
to the effect of a more intimate kind of foreshadowing
is bad luck and generally symbolizes a widowed woman
still mourning the end of her engagement two years ago
spades in tarot more generally represent challenging events coming: soon after leaving the card behind her on the curb
Delphine’s ex calls with the news that she cannot borrow his apartment in Antibes for vacation because he’s already planning his vacation on the Riviera
Cards foreshadow Delphine’s fate later in the film too; however
her most persistent superstition is the power of the color green
each green thing piercing her passive days with significance
She’s aware of passing by green street poles; her friends often wear green beaded necklaces or hair clips on the edge of an apron
emotional scenes in the film take on a greenness as she defines her principles and particularities
The garden party is framed by ivy and clover; the backyard in Cherbourg is lush with leafy trees and ferns
and in this environment Delphine defends vegetarianism and her ethics of intentional consumption with a clarity she’s rarely shown before
Rohmer reveals it in the same way Delphine believes it to manifest: in brief and unexpected occurrences
and impulsively decides to return to Paris
this is a critical example of Delphine’s refusal to shape her destiny and experience new things (best case scenario: a lover); her deep-seated belief in fate happening invokes her lonely passivity
she can quickly identify a pointless and depressing circumstance
She can sense when a destination isn’t sufficiently romantic
so why bother sticking it out long enough for something to happen to her
It’s this intuition (or perhaps the lack of an affirming sign) that leads her back to the streets of Paris
an old friend she hasn’t seen in perhaps two years
I went away and came back again” with “another two weeks to kill,” prompts Irène to lend Delphine her brother-in-law’s apartment in Biarritz
this random interaction is not only acceptable
but inspires Delphine to try another vacation
Delphine is lonely in Biarritz too—but she finds momentum there
but the sea-air seems to do some good and she briefly befriends Léna
confident Swedish woman who loves solo-traveling and finding cute boys to take her dancing despite her own engagement
Though Léna is at first a respite from Delphine’s attempt at solo-travel
she eventually runs away from Léna and the flirts they’ve attracted together
and this fit of passion leads her to a trove of omens along the rocky seaside walking paths
a good omen which traditionally signals youthful love
this fortune comes true with less immediacy—but it does usher in good
Delphine comes across a cluster of adults perched on a sea wall
Delphine continues to walk out of sight on the twisting path
but intrigued by the word “vert,” she pauses within earshot of the conversation
A woman describes the novel as “like a fairy tale” (59:48)
and Delphine sees herself mirrored by the ways they describe the main character: “The heroine is a fairy-tale heroine
She’s as simple as Cinderella or Snow White.”
which is in and of itself something Delphine is searching for
the little book club describes Verne’s novel as extraordinary because “There are characters who are… who are searching for something.” This line serves to strip away the futility of Delphine’s seemingly endless search for vacation and peace by validating the act of yearning
The group on the sea wall continues to describe the instances they have witnessed the Green Ray
and to explain how the phenomenon works—the importance of a clear sky for the light to refract just so: “Some summers you won’t see the green ray at all because the atmospheric conditions are not favorable.” However
This scene acts as a glittering flash—a burst of fate—of what Le Rayon vert is all about
It illuminates the ways in which Delphine is searching to clarify her emotions (not that she is merely lost and struggling)
The fact that Jules Verne’s character never manages to see the green ray
but does come to understand her own feelings
as well as those of the young man she meets
hope that she will find a man with whom she feels less lonely
that she will mature and stick to a decision
The camera cuts away from her revelatory face and the sun dips unassumingly orange below the foggy horizon
Delphine has not yet achieved a vacation––her sense of futility persists and she decides to spend her last weekend of time off in Paris
she catches the eye of a young man—a sturdy young cabinetmaker named Jacques
Her idea of romance has always been coincidental—rather than be “proactive” or “determined,” she dreams hazily: “I just like to think that over there
Jacques is a romantic guy and not too bold
Delphine is initially entranced by the atmosphere of the station
The circumstances under which they lock eyes and blush are just sweet enough
She misses her train home to spend her afternoon with Jacques in a nearby fishing town called Saint-Jean-de-Luz
He is a patient man—and while Delphine’s efforts to explain herself have been full of frustration (such as bemoaning her vacation to friends at the garden party
or explaining her vegetarianism to a family in Cherbourg)
She explains the emptiness that one-night stands inspire in her
there is a souvenir shop called Rayon vert
and as they watch the fuzzy horizon of the sea
he asks Delphine if she will spend the next few days with him near Bayonne
Though she doesn’t have to return to work until Monday
Delphine refuses to answer until the sun has fully set
hoping that she will witness the green ray and find clarity in that moment—a glimpse of her fate would allow her to realize it and tell him a confident yes or no
Jacques works to understand her intensity:
They both sit slightly hunched forward on a bench
Rohmer cuts between observing Delphine and allowing the camera to adopt Delphine’s observations
Delphine glances down shyly before continuing to watch the horizon
before the camera cuts back to a slow zoom on the couple
Though the V in a French deck of cards stands for Valet
the sun closer and closer to disappearing followed by Delphine and Jacques framed ever-slightly tighter
a warm glow cast by the sun on their faces
Delphine waits for signs to indicate that she is on the right track to casually romantic yet fateful encounters
While she waits for life to get better and the next green thing to appear
she drowns in both a sense of futility and a steadfastness to fate
“How can you overcome your typical stubbornness?” and Delphine answers
Life’s stubborn.” She lashes out against well-meaning advice
blah blah blah,” operates under the assumption and frustration that she is undesirable
and claims that she has already done enough to put herself out there
Delphine is an exemplary unreliable narrator
often telling her friends half-truths or versions of stories that contradict each other
her friends ascribe her loneliness to her failed engagement
but Delphine alternates between calling Jean-Pierre her boyfriend and admitting their separation
by sharing the sunset with Delphine and Jacques
the viewer is assured that what Delphine sees is now real and that her reactions are honest; the combination of these landscape shots and the camera’s quick cuts back to Delphine’s perspective offer affirmations of Delphine’s character
and the prospect of her pursuits being fulfilled is satisfying to watch
Though Delphine is consistently relatable in her meandering
and so this moment of assurance deals the viewer both tension and relief
the camera focuses on the final flicker of the sun and there
a faint green bar flashes along the horizon
Delphine shouts “Yes!” (“Ouais!”) and the camera cuts back to her as she lowers her pointed finger
bringing her hand delicately over her mouth to muffle gasps of joy and awe
Instead of the green ray providing her with a concrete answer
Delphine sees it as a sign indicating that she’s on the right track
her bold yes is more than an answer to Jacques’ invitation—it is a yes to life and a yes to momentum and all that she has been denying herself
Captures why I connect with the movie so well
