Its buildings dominate the craggy landscape of Alcatraz Island
which lies about 1.5 miles north of San Francisco's famed Fisherman's Wharf
Alcatraz once housed dangerous criminals such as the infamous mobster Al Capone
under an incarceration strategy that sought to concentrate difficult prisoners in one facility
segregating them from less dangerous inmates in the prison system
Trump's message suggests he wants to restore Alcatraz to its original dual purpose. The twin goals for building the original prison, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons
were "to deal with the most incorrigible inmates in Federal prisons
and to show the law-abiding public that the Federal Government was serious" about stopping rampant crime in the 1920s and 1930s."
AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!" the president said on Truth Social
"The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law
Trump did not provide details about a timeline for reopening the prison
the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service referred NPR to the president's statement
Asked on Monday about his idea to reopen Alcatraz
"I guess I was supposed to be a movie maker," noting the prison's long history
adding that no one ever successfully escaped from the prison
Enacting Trump's proposal would come with a steep price tag
both for constructing and operating a new prison facility on an island whose most plentiful natural resource is sandstone
Alcatraz was shuttered "because the institution was too expensive to continue operating," according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons
It said operating the island prison was nearly three times more expensive than any other federal prison at the time
"This isolation meant that everything (food
fuel...) had to be brought to Alcatraz by boat," the bureau says
so nearly one million gallons of water had to be barged to the island each week."
If the Trump administration tries to rebuild a prison on the island
historian Jolene Babyak says it will need to solve long-running infrastructure challenges
"My reaction was two words: water and sewage," she says
"Those are two reasons why it would be impractical" to restore the facility as a working prison
"All of the sewage in those days was dumped in the bay," she says of the years when hundreds of inmates and staff lived on the island
It was depicted as being full of the country's worst criminals
offering harsh conditions and virtually no hope of escape
averaging 260 to 275 inmates — less than 1% of the total federal prison population at the time
And while it was designed around strict rules
the penitentiary's reputation was more nuanced
"Many prisoners actually considered the living conditions (for instance
always one man to a cell) at Alcatraz to be better than other Federal prisons
and several inmates actually requested a transfer to Alcatraz," the bureau states
The prison's staff lived on the island with their families, and children were ferried to San Francisco on school days, according to the National Park Service
who grew up to become a historian studying the island prison where she once lived due to her father's work as an administrator there
Everybody bragged about it," she tells NPR
noting that an early warden at the prison had prioritized using the promise of good food as a way to motivate inmates to follow the rules
The penitentiary did hold infamous criminals such as Capone; George "Machine Gun" Kelly; and Alvin Karpis and Arthur "Doc" Barker
But while some inmates were sent to Alcatraz because they were considered dangerous and/or escape risks
others spent shorter stints at the highly structured prison
"Once prison officials felt a man no longer posed a threat and could follow the rules (usually after an average of five years on Alcatraz)," the prisons bureau says
"he could then be transferred back to another Federal prison to finish his sentence and be released."
Kennedy closed the federal penitentiary in 1963
Alcatraz is currently a museum administered by the National Park Service
as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area since 1972
the NPS says it "represents the federal government's response to post-Prohibition
Both the institution and the men confined within its walls reflect our society during this era."
The original impetus for creating the Alcatraz prison, the park service says
government's desire to create a "high-profile prison that represented the Justice Department's response to fears around public safety and organized crime."
Alcatraz "served as an experiment" in handling problematic inmates
"The model they developed on Alcatraz would later serve as a blueprint for the high security federal prison located in Marion
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has unveiled a string of high-profile initiatives that he says will protect public safety and also crack down on unlawful immigration. They include deporting immigrants — and potentially
citizens — to a maximum security prison in El Salvador
Alcatraz was initially viewed as a defense outpost in San Francisco Bay when it was brought under federal control by President Millard Fillmore in 1850
Groups housed there include: captured Confederates in the 1860s; members of the Hopi Tribe in the 1890s; and prisoners from the 1898 Spanish-American War
In the early 1900s, it became the site of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks for the U.S. Army. In 1933, "the island was transferred to the U.S. Department of Justice for use by the Federal Bureau of Prisons," according to the Bureau of Prisons
Alcatraz Island is now a popular National Park Service site that's been open to the public since 1973

President Donald Trump wants to turn Alcatraz into a federal prison again
President Donald Trump wants to convert Alcatraz back into a federal prison
decades after the California island fortress was converted into a U.S
tourist destination because it had become too costly to house America's worst criminals
The prison off the coast of San Francisco is where the government sent notorious gangsters Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly as well as lesser-known men who were considered too dangerous to lock up elsewhere
Circled by herons and gulls and often shrouded in fog
Alcatraz has been the setting for movies featuring Sean Connery
suddenly is needed to house America’s “most ruthless and violent” criminals
we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals
and keep them far away from anyone they could harm
That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Trump said Sunday on his Truth Social site
Alcatraz is in San Francisco Bay off the coast of San Francisco and visible from the Golden Gate Bridge
It is best known for its years as a federal prison
President Millard Fillmore in 1850 declared the island for public purposes
Confederates were housed there during the Civil War
the government decided that it needed a place to hold the worst criminals
and Alcatraz became the choice for a prison
one that would prohibit constant communication with the outside world by those confined within its walls,” the park service said
“Although land in Alaska was being considered
the availability of Alcatraz Island conveniently coincided with the government’s perceived need for a high security prison.”
The remoteness eventually made it impractical
Everything from food to fuel had to arrive by boat
“The island had no source of fresh water,” according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, “so nearly one million gallons of water had to be barged to the island each week.”
The cost to house someone there in 1959 was $10.10 a day compared with $3 at a federal prison in Atlanta
It was cheaper to build a new prison from scratch
many prisoners tried to get out: 36 men attempted 14 separate escapes into the bay
Nearly all were caught or didn’t survive the cold water and swift current
“Escape from Alcatraz,” a 1979 movie starring Eastwood
leaving behind handmade plaster heads with real hair in their beds to fool guards
no credible evidence emerged to suggest the men were still alive
“The Rock,” a 1996 fictional thriller with Connery and Cage
centers on an effort to rescue hostages from rogue Marines on Alcatraz
Alcatraz became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and was opened to the public in 1973
The park service says the island gets more than 1 million visitors a year who arrive by ferry
and visitors can see the cells where prisoners were held
claimed to have a right to Alcatraz and began an occupation that lasted for 19 months
It ended in 1971 when federal authorities intervened
“The underlying goals of the Indians on Alcatraz were to awaken the American public to the reality of the plight of the first Americans and to assert the need for Indian self-determination,” late historian Troy Johnson wrote.

Northwestern will not renew the lease on its San Francisco campus
and will officially move out of the space in Spring 2026
the campus hosted multiple academic programs from different NU schools throughout the year since 2016
including through the Pritzker School of Law
Segal Design Institute and Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
all academic programs currently being hosted in the space will wind down
“The demand for academic program activity in that location no longer supports the need for a dedicated space,” a University spokesperson said
Northwestern will continue to thoughtfully consider strategic educational opportunities that serve the institution’s mission and priorities.”
The lease closure was a decision made by the Office of the Provost
without input from the directors of the academic programs
the news of the campus closing came abruptly to many
the site manager at the San Francisco campus
said he was notified three weeks ago that the University wouldn’t renew its lease
NU’s uncertain financial climate — including the federal funding freeze — was one of the key reasons for the program’s closure
“When there’s uncertainty in the economy
people don’t donate as much,” Salvador said
“And a lot of the programs are donor-funded.”
NU doesn’t charge undergraduate students any additional fees beyond standard tuition for academic programs in San Francisco
the programs often incur additional costs to the University due to the cost of relocating faculty and providing offsite programming
is the $1,750 room and board stipend that NU offers each undergraduate participant to offset San Francisco’s additional living expenses
“It all comes down to money,” Salvador said
“If you don’t have it or you’re running out of it
then you have to make some cuts here and there
And San Francisco is not a core part of Northwestern.”
Kim Hoffmann is the design education and strategic initiatives lead for Segal and one of the main coordinators of the Bay Area Immersion Program
Every Winter Quarter for the past nine years
undergraduate students took experiential learning courses in San Francisco to explore the intersection between journalism and design
Segal was already reevaluating the impact of the program within McCormick and potentially changing its format
The news of the lease ending and financial uncertainty were catalysts for the program’s closure
Although the program could have technically been run for another year
Hoffmann said coordinating the program was difficult because the directors of the program from both schools didn’t know what to expect regarding the lease
“We didn’t have our answer until the Spring Quarter had started
and we were still scrambling to try and get the (program) application together,” Hoffmann said
The program application is usually released at the beginning of Spring Quarter to give students ample time to register for the prerequisite classes
Hoffmann said “it was too much to ask.”
associate dean of journalism and primary coordinator of the Bay Area program for Medill
said although there was high student demand for the program
the lease decision was entirely outside of Medill’s control
“It was a very successful program that we didn’t anticipate closing,” Bennett said
really strong student interest and excitement.”
When Medill learned the lease was going to expire
she said it made sense to wind the program down
Pam Daniels has been the design professor for the Bay Area Immersion Program since 2020
Many of Daniels’ students told her that their experience in the Bay Area was “life-changing.”
two first-year students approached Daniels about the program
and she said having to let them know that it was getting shut down was “painful.”
“I don’t even have words to describe to you how sad I am if people don’t get to grow in the dramatic ways that I saw students grow,” Daniels said
It’s hard for me to understand.”
Weinberg junior Laura Félix only applied to the program because her girlfriend was also applying
and had no plans on pursuing design academically
she said she was inspired to complete the Segal Design Certificate
“This is such a huge opportunity that shaped my academic career at Northwestern
and I feel sad that other people won’t get to do it,” Félix said
Weinberg sophomore Maddie Wang planned on attending the program next year and had been taking classes to fit that academic plan
“I wish that the administration were more transparent about their (decision) and (had) taken student feedback into consideration,” Wang said
Daniels said the way the University announced the closure of the Bay Area campus was inconsiderate of the four-year student experience
in which students often plan their academic career around an off-campus program
She added when the University advertises rich
it feels like a “bait and switch.”
“We may be making sensible financial choices
but our investment belongs (to) our students,” Daniels said
“Any decisions that are taken that are going to impact the student experience should be made with a great deal more forethought
so that we’re not disappointing the people we’re here to serve.”
Hoffmann said she hopes that the current situation will be more of a “pause” than a “twilight.”
“In-context learning is really important
and that’s something that’s not going to go away,” Hoffmann said
“It (will be) a challenge if we’re going to be limited in funding
but we want to try and continue that.”

D5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood’s legislation mandating greater equity in the placement of homeless services is long overdue
The measure challenges the longstanding myth that San Francisco can solve a citywide problem by limiting services to a handful of neighborhoods
Mahmood’s measure does two specific things
it requires all supervisor districts to open at least one shelter or behavioral health center in the next twelve months
it prevents the city from opening new facilities within 1000 feet of another one
Had this latter provision been in effect in 2022 Little Saigon would likely not have been wrecked
It would have stopped HSH from placing two shelters virtually next to each other on the 600 block of Ellis
It also would have prevented the city from opening a shelter at the Monarch tourist hotel at 1015 Geary across the street from the 1000 Polk Navigation Center
The Monarch was one of two tourist hotels converted to shelters within 1000 feet of another homeless services facility
and is also almost next door to another facility
The once thriving lower Polk and Geary commercial districts were badly hit by that patently destructive move
Both areas saw vacant retail and drug activity soar after new homeless services were placed in proximity to existing uses
In case anyone wonders why a law is needed rather than trusting common sense in siting homeless services
Little Saigon and lower Polk are a case study for passing Mahmood’s measure
How could City Hall think placing a new shelter next door to one of the city’s largest would not jeopardize nearby small businesses
Walton and Melgar for co-sponsoring this legislation
who represents a district that once had a “progressive” supervisor who blocked homeless services on the grounds that there were children in D7 (he had no problem backing homeless services in the far more child populated Tenderloin and Bayview-Hunter’s Point)
San Francisco’s homeless policy has long been driven by a false assumption
That assumption is that the Tenderloin is the best place for homeless and behavioral health services because “that’s where the population needing such services is located.”
But I know from working in the Tenderloin for 45 years that those in tents or otherwise hanging out on sidewalks are not there because they were evicted from a Tenderloin SRO or apartment
They have come to the Tenderloin because their presence has been accepted there by city policies defining the neighborhood as a containment zone
That people needing services are located in the Tenderloin has nothing to do with the neighborhood serving as an incubator or breeding ground for people becoming homeless. Rather, it’s because the prior administration’s policies encouraging drug tourism sent a welcome map to people across the nation to come to the Tenderloin for free drug use
That’s why the city converted four Tenderloin tourist hotels to shelters but did not extend the SIP hotel model in any other neighborhood. It’s also why Tenderloin families and businesses sued the city in March 2024 to enjoin the continued use of the neighborhood as a containment zone (the suit is ongoing in federal court
to stop the Tenderloin distribution of drug paraphernalia by city funded nonprofits
is being implemented by the Lurie Administration
The myth that homeless services are located in the areas that produce the problem enabled many neighborhoods to feel justified in opposing services
This put a terribly unfair burden on the Tenderloin
Mahmood’s legislation marks a dramatic shift in this thinking
It is the first time San Francisco has formally acknowledged that it has unfairly targeted specific neighborhoods—also among the most ethnically diverse—in addressing a citywide crisis
Once the entire city feels negatively impacted by drug tourism
that unfair neighborhood targeting will stop
that’s what happened last November in the mayoral election
Voters elected a mayor who has consistently pledged to end drug tourism
That’s the best strategy to make new shelters in many neighborhoods unnecessary.
Kudos to Mahmood for promoting an equity measure with clear and real mandates
Please encourage all supervisors to support this legislation and thank those already in support

The bullpen has been a little bit better than the starters
but there have been a few pitchers struggling
Lou Trivino is one of those relievers that has not pitched great

the Giants DFA'd Trivino to bring back their former top prospect
Lou Trivino was DFA’d to clear a roster spot
Harrison was 97-98 mph in his last Triple-A start
Harrison has been pitching great in Triple-A, and he recently saw an uptick in his velocity.
In six starts for the Sacramento River Cats, Harrison has a 3.46 ERA, 38 strikeouts and just eight walks through 26.0 innings pitched.
Per Pavlovic, the plan for Harrison is to use him out of the bullpen. With his recent increase in velocity, Harrison can be valuable at any point in the game.
Giants plan is to have Kyle Harrison in their bullpen. Velocity has gotten better and better in recent weeks and he had 38 strikeouts in 26 innings in Triple-A. Also gives them some needed coverage as they head back out on the road.
The former third-round pick can still be used as a starter, despite the plan to have him come out of the bullpen. With both Harrison and Hayden Birdsong on the Major League roster, San Francisco has two good options they can slot into their starting rotation.
In terms of their starting rotation, the Giants have three pitchers that are going to be mainstays. Those three are Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Justin Verlander. They are all throwing the ball well enough to be locked into the rotation.
Jordan Hicks and Landen Roupp are the two current starters that could see their spot taken.
Hicks has a 6.07 ERA through seven starts. He has thrown 37.1 innings, allowed opponents to hit .267 off him, and he has struck out 34 while walking 15 batters. His last two starts have been pretty good, but the move to bring Harrison back to Oracle Park shows San Francisco could be getting impatient.
Roupp, on the other hand, has allowed opponents to hit .294 off him this season, but his ERA is a little bit better than Hicks' at 5.10. The right-hander has struck out 35 batters and walked 14, as well.
Both Hicks and Roupp can be replaced as starting pitchers.
Harrison has shown a lot of improvement in the minor leagues to begin the year. Now that he is in the Majors, San Francisco is hoping he will be able to hold the same velocity and give them the same production.

Pete Crow-Armstrong has been a revelation at the bottom of the Cubs’ order
His 23.5% hard-hit rate ranks in the 90th percentile of MLB players
a rare bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent bottom third of the order
led by standout performances from Nico Hoerner at second base and PCA in center
His road performances have been particularly taxing
where he has a bloated 5.75 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP
his ability to limit hard contact on the road is concerning
The Cubs will certainly capitalize on his inability to consistently locate
especially against a lineup that’s been hitting like gangbusters
San Francisco has managed to grind out wins
particularly through its pitching—currently sixth in the MLB in team ERA (3.44)
the lack of offensive firepower (ranked 24th in batting average) means they’ll struggle to match the Cubs’ output in a high-scoring game
Boyd’s methodical approach will likely keep the Giants’ power hitters at bay
and his ability to navigate the first five innings with ease could prove pivotal in a game where the Cubs are favored heavily
the Cubs have been covering with confidence
They’ve dominated against the spread (ATS) in recent contests
failing to cover in six straight night games against NL opponents following a home win
The wind at Wrigley will also help Boyd keep fly balls in check
and their lineup will continue to batter Roupp and the Giants’ inconsistent bullpen

Harrison has yet to appear in an MLB game in 2025
as he opened the regular season in the minors
He southpaw posted a 10.80 ERA and 2.100 WHIP in spring training
the former top prospect went 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA
1.308 WHIP and 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings across six Triple-A starts
Per NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic
the Giants plan to use Harrison out of the bullpen for the time being
Right-handed reliever Lou Trivino was designated for assignment to make room for Harrison on the big league roster
Giants plan is to have Kyle Harrison in their bullpen
Velocity has gotten better and better in recent weeks and he had 38 strikeouts in 26 innings in Triple-A
Also gives them some needed coverage as they head back out on the road
Harrison made seven starts when he got called up for the first time in 2023
8.7 strikeouts per nine innings and a 0.9 WAR
The 23-year-old has never come out of the bullpen in a regular season game in either the majors or minors
His only four relief appearances as a professional came between 2023 and 2025 spring training
That made him the highest-ranked Giants prospect
as well as the highest-ranked left-handed pitcher in the minors
Harrison could make his season debut Monday

First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 7:40 p.m

As DOGE and other offices reshape federal agencies
the lawsuit seeks to stop the reorganization and massive workforce reductions underway at the order of President Trump
The case seeks judicial intervention to stop the implementation of the President’s unlawful Executive Order 14210 (“Implementing the President’s Department of Government Efficiency Workforce Optimization Initiative”)
which has resulted in the dismantling of the federal government on a scale unprecedented in U.S
Although the President’s Executive Order seeks to radically reorganize and deconstruct federal agencies through massive reductions in force
the plaintiffs make clear that only Congress has the power to change the federal government in the ways the President has directed
“President Trump’s complete disregard for the rule of law has had incredibly harmful impacts on local communities,” said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu
“The President cannot radically restructure federal agencies through massive layoffs with a mere signature on an executive order
Only Congress has the power to reorganize federal agencies as Trump wishes
The Constitution’s separation of powers was intended to prevent the abuse of presidential authority
yet here Trump is ignoring checks and balances and trying to act as both President and Congress
San Francisco joins this coalition to stand up for our Constitution and the rule of law.”
“The Trump Administration’s unconstitutional actions to reduce the size of the federal government are directly impacting millions of public employees
and all those who rely on government services,” said Santa Clara County Counsel Tony LoPresti
“These actions hit home right here in the Bay Area by making it harder for local governments to respond to emergencies like wildfires and earthquakes
eliminating public health programs that help prevent the spread of disease
and undermining vital collaboration between local and federal government in dozens of other operational areas
The County of Santa Clara is proud to work in coalition with this diverse and expansive group of partners to put a stop to the Trump Administration’s attempt to bypass Congress and make unfettered cuts that are affecting all levels of government services.”
President Trump has directed nearly every federal agency to make massive cuts to its workforce in furtherance of a reorganization of the entire federal government
under the mandate of Executive Order 14210
the Department of Health and Human Services began eliminating more than 10,000 positions throughout the Centers for Disease Control
many other federal agencies are expected to significantly downsize their workforces including the Small Business Administration by 43%
the Department of Housing and Urban Development by 51%
“When the President unilaterally cuts the jobs and services our communities rely on — services that protect children
and fellow unions across California will step up and fight back,” said SEIU 521 Chief Elected Officer Riko Mendez
“Cuts and layoffs at the federal level are direct attacks on State
are already seeing delays in life-saving care
We proudly stand with our local and state government leaders to stop this administration’s reckless
politically motivated purges of the public servants who hold our communities together
Lives are on the line — and we will not back down.”
Local governments like the City and County of San Francisco and the County of Santa Clara joined as plaintiffs in this case due to the harm caused to their jurisdictions as a result of the Trump Administration’s actions to remake the federal government
Federal staffing shortages and other dramatic changes to federal government operations will make it more difficult for local governments to effectively deliver programs and services at the local level. In addition
it makes intergovernmental work more difficult
and cumbersome for state and local jurisdictions
Santa Clara County is taking action to protect federal employees because without their life-saving research and service
millions of Americans will suffer,” said Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Otto Lee. “The current staffing mess in the federal government is inhibiting local governments like ours to serve our communities
What’s being sold as ‘efficiency’ has shown to be cruel and pure chaos
and this dangerous breakdown must be stopped immediately.”
In addition to the City and County of San Francisco and the County of Santa Clara
the coalition of plaintiffs in the lawsuit includes the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and four AFGE locals
American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and SEIU Local 1000
Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks
winning each of the final three games of the four-game set after dropping the first
With hot bats from the first inning during the Sunday afternoon showdown to close out the series
there is one Giants star in particular who the team is finally starting to see the kind of production they hoped for out of him
There were flashes over the first month of the season for Adames, but the overall numbers were not strong over the first month
Adames showed the kind of power the Giants were hoping they signed when he hit two home runs in his first two at-bats of the game:

Two at-bats, two home runs for Willy Adames! pic.twitter.com/3AoThXWGsr
Adames was posting a slash line of .215/.302/.300 with just two home runs on the year
however that does not tell the story of the way he has been hitting the ball as of late
Over the last week even prior to the long ball fest on Sunday
Adames had slashed .313/.450/.563 with five hits and four runs scored along with four walks in a total of five games
In his final season with the Brewers in 2024
leading to concerns about what the reasoning was for his struggles in the first month
and playing in a new place for just the second time in his career as well as moving to an entirely new region of the country brings a level of pressure it takes some time to adjust to
San Francisco has gotten off to a surprising and wonderful start this year
keeping pace in the National League West even without Adames hitting at anywhere near the rate they had hoped
In order to continue that momentum through the marathon that is an MLB season
the Giants will need Adames to continue to heat up as he gets more and more comfortable
With a Top 10 offense in San Francisco thus far in terms of runs scored even without Adames hitting well
him becoming the kind of terrifying power hitter he has been throughout his career is a scary thought for the rest of baseball

A year after drawing thousands to the Embarcadero in San Francisco, homegrown electronic music label Dirtybird will throw the second-annual free Back to Baysics dance party at Embarcadero Plaza on June 14
The influential San Francisco label’s D.I.Y. beginnings trace back to 2005
bass-heavy dance music with an outsider appeal
Dirtybird has since been acquired by San Francisco-based
and has thrown numerous high-profile events with a who’s-who of electronic music
Back to Baysics packed the plaza with electronic music lovers of all ages who came to see Belgian DJ Sacha Robotti and local acts Deron Delgado and Moody Jones
The DJ lineup for this year’s party has yet to be announced
Back to Baysics is part of a free concert series from Another Planet Entertainment (the producers of Outside Lands)
the Recreation and Parks Department and Mayor Daniel Lurie’s office
“Our arts and culture are helping to drive San Francisco’s comeback
and this is a perfect example of that energy,” said Lurie in a statement
The concert series was born from Another Planet’s agreement with the city to produce free concerts in exchange for hosting ticketed shows in Golden Gate Park after Outside Lands
More free concerts will be announced this summer at Union Square and Civic Center
Back to Baysics takes place at Embarcadero Plaza on June 14, 1–5 p.m. Free RSVP here.
keeping pace with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers
if the Giants hope to make a real run at the postseason and beyond
they cannot be content with simply...keeping pace
The trade deadline is more than two months away
so they have plenty of time to consider moves
One former Giant who makes a lot of sense only spent a year in the Bay Area
The San Francisco Giants are a pleasant surprise in the NL West
Cutch was dealt once before from the Pirates to the Giants at the 2018 MLB trade deadline
slashing .255/.357/.415 for a slightly above league average OPS
Phillies and even Brewers before eventually returning to where it all began in Pittsburgh
As painful as it would be for the Pirates to once again sent Cutch packing out of town
he'd have a far better chance at one last playoff run in San Francisco than he does in the Burgh
currently sitting in last place in the NL Central
is having his best season in quite some time

McCutchen has accumulated 0.6 WAR in a hybrid outfield/DH role
proving he can still roam the corner outfield at a league average clip
He also has three home runs and a .779 OPS as of this writing
It should be noted that the Giants don't necessarily need McCutchen as much as he needs them
Cutch is wasting away the final productive seasons of his career with the Pirates
The Giants may well fall short of that goal as well
but at least they have a chance to taste postseason glory
The Pirates could very well be entering another rebuild
It's unclear where McCutchen would slide in with San Francisco
getting regular at-bats behind Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski in a corner outfield slot
Cutch is an important clubhouse presence who values the history of baseball by the bay
which should only make such a deal easier to put together for Buster Posey
