The United States Embassy & Consulates in Mexico has advised travelers to take precautions in several hotspot destinations south of the border
The authority shared the travel alert on April 25
noting violent incidents that travelers should be aware of
The embassy detailed that local and social media sources had been circulating news regarding the “emerging security situation in Baja California Sur,” one of Mexico’s over 32 states
On April 22, a law enforcement officer was killed, along with three other individuals, in separate incidents. The embassy didn’t disclose exactly where. On April 24, three buses were allegedly set on fire in La Paz and Los Cabos. The following day, a shootout reportedly occurred throughout multiple Cabo San Lucas neighborhoods
The travel alert reported that cartels have made threats against officials
and La Paz should “expect to see increased security presence [and] public transportation restrictions.” The source added that “other actions” are also being taken “to manage the situation.”
The Embassy & Consulates in Mexico recommends fleeing the scene and seeking “secure shelter” if the vibe of your location suddenly changes. Standard travel safety tips in the notice were to “be aware of your surroundings” and regularly update a loved one on your safety

It’s by far the most sophisticated and historic of Los Cabos’ four major tourist areas — San José
and the East Cape — with the most vibrant cultural scene and the best dining
thanks to its acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants
many of the four million people who travel to Los Cabos annually choose a hotel here
for those that don’t — and it bears noting that about half of Los Cabos’ hotel inventory of 18,000 or so rooms are in Cabo San Lucas
and the Scenic Route also has more available rooms than San José del Cabo — it’s still possible (and highly recommended) to spend at least one day enjoying the attractions in this remarkable locale
whose history dates back to the establishment of a Jesuit mission in 1730
Golf and fishing are the most iconic activities in Los Cabos. I highly recommend trying both at least once, even if you’re not an avid golfer or angler, as there’s more to these experiences locally than you might imagine. In the case of the former, that often means comfort stations with delicious food and drinks
Most players choose two of the nine-hole layouts (from Nicklaus’ Ocean

The restaurant is indeed particularly magical at night

A visit to the Farm Spa & Salon is the ideal way to relax and loosen up tense muscles after a morning on the golf links. Treatments include a variety of relaxing massages
with salon services ranging from facials and mani/pedis to hairstyling and men’s beard and mustache shaves
After your rejuvenating visit to Flora Farms, it’s time to experience San José del Cabo’s most iconic feature: its downtown Gallery District. Thursday night Art Walks are the city’s most beloved seasonal event and with good reason — not only are they a spotlight for San José’s vibrant arts scene
but for its charming downtown area with notable highlights like the old Catholic church (Parroquia Misión San José del Cabo) and City Hall with its distinguishing clock tower
If you visit during Art Walk you can see it all for yourself, but since these nights only about 30 days per year out of 365, chances are you won’t. Don’t worry, Cabo Adventures’ Art and Wine Evenings in San José del Cabo is a good substitute
Round-trip transportation from area hotels is one of the perks
since you’re already there strolling after your pampering massages you can simply meet up from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m
along with wine and an appetizer or two to hold you over until dinner
The tour includes a visit to the plaza principal
as well as stops in signature Gallery District art galleries

An immigrant visa is a document issued by a U.S
consular officer abroad that allows you to travel to the United States and apply for admission as a legal permanent resident (LPR)
Customs and Border Protection of the Department of Homeland Security makes the final decision as to whether or not to admit you as an LPR
you generally have the right to live and work in the United States permanently
Citizenship and Immigration Services of the Department of Homeland Security will mail your permanent resident card (often called a “green card”) to your new address in the United States
usually within three months of your entry into the United States
Please see 9 FAM 502.1-3 for a list of classification symbols and a brief description of each
Getting an immigrant visa usually means that you will be able to live and work in the United States for as long as you want
is generally for short-term visitors to the United States
You cannot stay in the United States permanently on a nonimmigrant visa
A nonimmigrant visa is sometimes informally called a “tourist visa” but can be issued for reasons other than tourism
Please see our nonimmigrant visa page for more information
There are three basic methods for obtaining an immigrant visa: 1.through a family relationship with a U.S
citizen or legal permanent resident 2.through employment 3.through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (the visa lottery) Most applicants in Mexico obtain their immigrant visas via family relationships
The first step in obtaining a family-based immigrant visa is for your relative (the petitioner) to file a Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) by mail with U.S
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security
Once your relative has filed a petition for you
you may check its status by accessing the USCIS Case Status Search Page
You may obtain an immigrant visa through employment rather than through a family member
More information on obtaining an immigrant visa through employment rather than through a family member is available on USCIS’s Green Card through a Job page
Please see the Fiscal Year 2016 Diversity Visa Entry Instructions
Note that the registration period for 2015 has closed
You may check this page for the Fiscal Year 2016 Diversity Visa Entry instructions in approximately September 2014
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security approves an immigrant visa petition
USCIS sends the approved petition to the Department of State’s National Visa Center in Portsmouth
The Department of State’s National Visa Center (NVC) retains the approved petition until the case is ready for adjudication by a consular officer abroad
Petitions may remain at NVC for several months or for many years depending on the visa category and country of birth of the visa applicant
When a beneficiary’s (the beneficiary is the person on whose behalf the petition was filed) priority date appears about to become current
NVC sends the petitioner a bill for processing Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the Act) and sends the beneficiary a Form DS-261 (Choice of Address and Agent)
Once the Form I-864 processing fee is paid
NVC sends the Form I-864 and related instructions to the petitioner
Once NVC receives the completed Form DS-261 from the applicant
NVC mails a bill for the immigrant visa fee to the agent designated on the Form DS-261
NVC sends the Instruction Package for Immigrant Visa Applicants to the agent
You or your agent must follow the directions in the Instruction Package for Immigrant Visa Applicants exactly
Failure to do so could result in a delay in your case and could even cause you to lose your chance to live and work in the United States
Once NVC completes its administrative processing of your case
the case file is sent to the Immigrant Visa Unit of the U.S
NVC will notify you by mail when this occurs
in the case of a family-based immigrant visa petition
is the date your petition was filed (not the date it was approved)
Family-based immigrant visas are divided into two broad groups
immediate relative cases and preference cases
An immediate relative family-based petition is filed by a U.S
A preference family-based petition is filed by a U.S
or sibling; or by a legal permanent resident on behalf of a spouse
Because the law does not limit the number of immediate relative visas
the priority date is normally irrelevant in such cases (please see the 9 FAM 502.1-1(d)(1) for the notable exception
related to the Child Status Protection Act)
the Immigrant Visa Unit may begin processing the approved petition upon receipt from the Department of State’s National Visa Center or the Department of Homeland Security
The law limits the number of preference visas available
All categories of family-based preference visas are currently “oversubscribed” (i.e.
there are more people who want visas than there are visa numbers available)
along with your visa category and nationality
determines whether a visa number is available or whether you must wait
Once your priority date is earlier than the cut-off date listed in the most recent Visa Bulle

The Forbes Vetted travel team has researched, written and published dozens of hotel guides featuring cities across the globe
We selected the top contenders based on personal stays as well as extensive research
My name is Astrid Taran and I’m the senior travel editor at Forbes Vetted
I have covered travel for almost a decade as both a writer and editor
Along with extensively writing about hotels and airlines
I have also written multiple destination guides as well as long-form features on luxury travel
I have visited Los Cabos—one of my favorite destinations in Mexico—dozens of times and stayed at the majority of hotels on this list
2025 7:00 PM ESTI know what you’re thinking
Where 18-year-old college kids go for spring break to cut loose and make decisions they’ll regret well into adulthood
Cabo, or more accurately, Los Cabos, is a big place. It has way more to offer than the cheap tequila shots and thumping night clubs that dominate the town of Cabo San Lucas
Los Cabos covers the entire southern tip of the Baja Peninsula
where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean
Cabo San Lucas might be the most popular destination
that's emerged as the cultural capital of the region
with an enticing mix of historic architecture
and quick access to the peninsula’s best adventures
Some of Mexico’s best surf breaks are a quick drive from one side of downtown
while the Sierra de Laguna Mountains stretch towards the sky from the other end of town
I recently spent a long weekend exploring Los Cabos, during which I sought waves, waterfalls, and scenic golf courses. In addition to the adventure, I had some of the most memorable meals of my life, enjoyed inventive cocktails
and strolled white-sand beaches with my wife—and I never set foot in Cabo San Lucas
What I discovered is that Cabo is all grown up and ripe with adventure if you know where to go
Here’s how to experience the best of Los Cabos in three days
but it’s the best way to get around the peninsula
Public transportation isn’t terribly reliable
and if you rely on a ride app like Uber, the distance between destinations adds hefty expenses
whether you take dirt roads into the mountains or cruise coastal highways with big Sea of Cortez views.
Keep an eye out for impromptu shows at busy intersections
We saw a woman juggling fire while waiting on a red light one night
Choose one of the larger rental companies and pay for added insurance when you pick up the car
nondescript four-door sedan and found the peninsula easy to navigate
When to Visit Los CabosLos Cabos is sunny and warm regardless of when you visit
which makes it an enticing winter destination for those of us looking to escape frigid weather.
when the temperature rarely rises above 85
but we visited during the summer and found the temperatures to be delightful
and you’re only a few steps from the ocean if you need to cool off.
Waves on the Sea of Cortez pick up in the summer
Humpback whales show up between December and April as they migrate up to Canada and Alaska
Seeing them is enough of a reason to schedule a trip
It'll likely be sunny and dry regardless of when you show up, so bring sunscreen, hats, and sun shirts
I stayed at Montage Los Cabos
which is a high-end mix of expansive guest rooms
and private residences spread across 39 acres with multiple private pools on its own slice of Santa Maria Bay
The quiet inlet is flanked by tall sandstone cliffs
It’s definitely a splurge—off-season rates at this 5-star property start at $800 a night—but the location is ideal
The serene vibe at the property sets the tone for the weekend and provides a nice balance to the high-adrenaline activities on the itinerary
Our room was just a quick stroll from the pools and beach and had a massive soaking tub as well as an outdoor shower
I didn’t get a chance to play the 18-hole golf course while I was visiting due to renovations
But I woke early each morning and watched the sun rise over the cliffs from the comfort of the resort’s hot tub
my wife and I spied private yachts anchoring just beyond the bay while stingrays leapt through the air close to shore
Make sure you earmark a chunk of time to visit Montage’s spa
which was a full-body experience that ended with a shot of mezcal
then spent probably a little too much time bouncing between the sauna and cold plunge pools
Montage has its own on-property adventure center
which partners with local guides who pick you up for a variety of experiences
from scuba diving excursions to learning how to e-foil
There’s also a fleet of paddle boards
and snorkel equipment you can check out and use to explore Santa Maria Bay
I had one of the most memorable dinners of my life at the resort's signature restaurant.
I also had one of the most memorable dinners of my life at Mezcal
The chef guided us through a multi-course tasting menu that was as much of a performance as it was a meal
Montage will also occasionally host a “barefoot beach BBQ” that has you dining right on the sand next to the waves
The resort offers a variety of cooking-themed classes as well
Where to Eat: Best Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in Los CabosCabo has fantastic food to enjoy at every meal
For lunch, the tacos at La Lupita are amazing—but the vibe is even better
Get a spot on the back patio and watch tortillas being made by hand
then spy the waiter shaving pineapple and roasted pork from a spit with a long knife
waiters automatically bring you a small cup of shrimp bisque when you sit down
Make the trek into the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains for dinner at Flora’s Field Kitchen
which sits on a 25-acre working organic farm
You’ll need to make a reservation ahead of time
Everything they serve is grown on one of their two properties
but you can’t go wrong with "A Walk Through The Garden," which features a handful of fresh veggies
or one of their flatbread pizzas pulled from the wood-fired oven.
Flora’s Field Kitchen also has an in-house butcher, so if pork chops are on the menu, get them. Even if you can’t score a reservation, you can still grab a drink at the bar. The restaurant makes its own beer
but you really want to try the bloody Marys
It even has an attached grocery store where you can grab produce to-go
Nomada Bar de Origin is the best bar on Cabo
I’m a sucker for a good IPA, so I spent a fair amount of time at Baja Brewing, which has a low-key taproom in the heart of downtown. You should stop in for a pint too—but you’re in Mexico, so you would be remiss if you didn’t sample a bit of San Jose del Cabo’s eclectic cocktail scene.
Don’t Miss: Top Attraction in Los CabosScuba diving is a must in Los Cabos
and I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to keep your feet firmly planted on land bouncing between waterfall hikes
But you probably made this trek for the Sea of Cortez
which separates the Baja Peninsula from Mexico’s mainland.
World-renowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau dubbed this slice of the Pacific Ocean the “aquarium of the world,” because it houses so many creatures
Roughly one-third of the Earth’s marine mammals can be found here.
Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park
off the coast of Los Cabos’ East Cape
protects one of the oldest coral reef systems in the world and is the premier diving and snorkeling site in Los Cabos
You can find five of the seven endangered species of sea turtles here.
Good snorkeling and dive sites are peppered throughout the coast of Los Cabos
but that’s just one way to experience this ocean
Protected bays offer ideal spots for kayaking or paddle boarding
and seasonal swells fire off sets of barrels all along the coast
There’s also nothing wrong with dangling your toes in the Sea of Cortez while watching the sun set over a nearby cliff and drinking a cocktail
a co-working space and coffee bar with an anchor location in downtown San Jose del Cabo
where the coffee is roasted in house and served in a gallery that features rotating local artists
If you’re looking for a healthy breakfast
you should get the maple bacon French toast
You’ll need the calories anyway; you’re going to spend the morning surfing Zippers
a reef break just five miles south of town on Highway 1.
Zippers might be the perfect surf break because access is easy thanks to a dedicated parking lot
There’s a distinct wave for most abilities that separates the hard chargers from the newbies
and the action happens right in front of a bar with great margaritas.
Beginners and intermediate surfers can stay on the inner wave closer to the beach
while advanced surfers looking for longer rides can paddle into deeper water to a break called “The Rock,” because it breaks around an exposed sea stack
I spent the day at Middles and had some of the best left handers of my life
The ease of access means you won’t have the break to yourself
but there’s plenty of room to spread out and the vibe was mellow and friendly
there’s no need to worry about stepping on anyone’s toes
so you’ll need to starfish if you’re flung from your board
You can grab margaritas at a bar right next to Zippers
Pro tip: It’s a tradition to grab a margarita at Zippers
when you finally drag yourself out of the water
But don’t overlook the pop-up truck vendors selling beverages and food in the parking lot
that hit just right after a long surf session
Both beginner and expert surfers can enjoy the waves at Zippers
The waves are consistent at Zippers throughout summer
But if you’re looking for a less-crowded option
which has a beautiful longboard wave on most days that occasionally turns into a powerful barrel on south swells.
If it’s winter, you’ll need to drive to the Pacific side of the peninsula, where you’ll find breaks going off all along the coast heading north. Hook up with InCabo for rentals and half-day guided surf sessions
The company will put you on whatever wave is firing best that day
a square and church marks the center of San Jose del Cabo
It’s a lively spot with kids playing soccer in the streets and vendors selling everything from hats to ice cream
But the real action is happening just off the square in the Gallery District
cobblestone streets with flags and lights hanging above.
Stroll through the district and you’ll find everything from hole-in-the-wall bars to high-end art galleries. The district is heavy on contemporary art, but wander into the Art and Coffee Armario
one of the first galleries to open in San Jose del Cabo
and you’ll find the work of local folk artists displayed in an old gas station
Sipping a margarita on the patio ain’t bad
Dinner is back at Mezcal
the signature restaurant at Montage Los Cabos—make reservations in advance—where the chef takes traditional Mexican dishes and elevates them into modern masterpieces
You can make your own decisions and order entrees like suckling pig with crispy potatoes or the fresh catch with rice and black beans
but I suggest you put your palate in the hands of the chef and commit to the tasting menu
which unfolds in a series of small courses that are inspired by famous markets across Mexico
Settle in for a couple of hours of rotating plates full of delicate ceviche
Think plates with cactus and salads dressed with concoctions that send smoke rising from your plate
The whole experience feels like dinner and a show
and the freshest sushi possibleLos Cabos has become one of the world’s best destinations for golf
as the sport’s greatest personalities and designers have put their mark on the peninsula by crafting signature courses that make the most of the mountains and canyons dropping towards the ocean
golf here is an adventure that’s as much about the journey and scenery as it is your handicap
Los Cabos is a golfer's paradise
Maximize the scenery with 18 holes at Palmilla Golf Club—a 27-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus—just 10 minutes from downtown San Jose del Cabo where every hole has a view of the Sea of Cortez.
Palmilla was Nicklaus’ first course in Latin America and helped set the bar for destination golf in Baja
the Ocean Course has the most dramatic views of the Sea of Cortez
with many holes playing within a pitching wedge of the beach.
The Arroyo Course might be the most interesting from a pure golf perspective
You're pitted against deep canyons and fairways surrounded by roughs full of tall cacti and the occasional roadrunner
but you have to be a resort guest to play the Arroyo Course
Cabo Real Golf Club occupies 3.5 miles of coastline and a course designed by Robert Trent Jones II
one of the most respected golf architects in the world
It’s regularly voted one of the top courses in Mexico.
with wide fairways that roll downhill toward the Sea of Cortez
while the back nine wanders into the foothills
with fairways that run along narrow ridge lines and small
Play your round in the winter and there’s a chance you’ll see whales putting on a show from the front nine
Head back to town for a cold beer and straight forward, home-style seafood served in a relaxed atmosphere at El Toro Guero
Grilled shrimp or fish tacos are a no brainer
which has a little bit of everything stuffed into a giant bowl
You can also try the fresh catch fried whole if you want something that will stick to your ribs
You should make time to explore the coral reefs in Cabo Pulmo
If you’re looking to explore the peninsula with a scenic drive and world-class adventure, head two hours north along the East Cape to Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park
where the coral reefs have been impressing divers and snorkelers since Jacques Cousteau put the area on the map
The water is clear and the reef system is home to an estimated 800 species of marine life.
Los Frailes Beach and Cabo Pulmo Beach offer easy access for swimming and snorkeling without a boat
You’re looking for one of the endangered species of sea turtles that call the area home
or the sea lions that migrate through the area
rays and a variety of sharks can be found inside the park year round
If you want to get more adventurous and venture beyond the beaches
which costs $70 per person and hits three spots within the park and gives you a chance to swim with sea lions
If you want to dip your toe into the world of snorkeling without traveling up the East Cape
head to Chileno Bay between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo
turquoise water and a crescent moon of beach between tan cliffs
Head to the right of the beach for the best snorkeling
as tropical fish tend to gather near the rocks
Sticking with the sea theme, dedicate one dinner to Fabric
for what is arguably the best sushi in all of Los Cabos
Don’t let the nondescript shopping center atmosphere fool you
Its menu is largely based on the freshest catch of the day
but you can expect the chefs to incorporate local ingredients like serrano peppers and mangos whenever possible
hit the spaYou’ve spent most of your time exploring the coast of Los Cabos
but you’d be remiss if you didn’t take a morning and head inland into the Sierra de LaGuna Mountain Range
where an 11,000-hectare UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protects a surprisingly lush ecosystem that collects more rainfall than any other part of the Baja Peninsula.
The result is a series of craggy canyons with hidden waterfalls, swimming holes, and hot springs. For an easy introduction to the terrain, head to the Sol de Mayo Ecological Ranch
where you’ll pay a small $5 fee to access a handful of hikes with tantalizing destinations
like the half-mile steep trek through the Sol de Mayo Canyon
which holds a tall waterfall that carves a path through sheer gray rock walls
The plunge pool at the base of the falls is crisp and refreshing
You’ve worked up an appetite, so be sure to make it back into town in time for brunch at Ruba’s Bakery
Show up on Saturday or Sunday and you can order the chilaquiles valley
which are essentially breakfast nachos with roasted lamb and Morita chili sauce
Don’t fret if you don’t make it in time for breakfast
Ruba’s starts serving a late lunch at 2:30 with an eclectic menu that ranges from fondu to smash burgers
Ruba's Bakery is a great lunch spot after a long hike
Give yourself a parting gift and book a massage at Montage Los Cabos’ spa
and steam rooms allow you stretch out the relaxation to its fullest
which finished with a shot of high-end Mezcal
then spent an embarrassing amount of time bouncing between the steam room and cold plunge before soaking on the edge of the spa’s pool while eating spicy fried crickets
this is exactly what everyone should do before getting on a flight back home

Los Cabos’ desert-meets-the-sea views look awfully beautiful all year long © ferrantraite / Getty Images
Picture-perfect Los Cabos offers a desert-meets-sea aesthetic
with gorgeous golden rock formations that tumble down to the wide-open Pacific Ocean
but it’s also the most expensive time to visit
summer’s low season often sports the lowest prices for flights and hotels
but it’s also the time when you need to be the most mindful of the potential for extreme weather
While Cabo manages to keep things fun and enjoyable year-round
we want to help you figure out when is your best time to plan your Los Cabos trip
month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Cabo
With average temperatures that range between a delicious 77 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit
most tourists consider high season their best time to visit Cabo
Thanks to cool breezes that ride in from the Pacific
visitors to Los Cabos can expect sunny and warm days with cooler desert nights
And since Cabo averages less than 1.5 inches (or under 3.5cm) of rain during these five months
you face the least risk of rain on your parade
winter is also the best time to spot pods of gray and humpback whales (and whale sharks) enjoying the warm and nutrient-rich ocean water
But, of course, there’s a catch: The high season brings big crowds. If you come during the winter holiday season (Christmas and New Year’s) or spring break (March and April), you should expect top-shelf prices at Cabo’s resorts and restaurants. (Check our guide on where to eat in Los Cabos for some great restaurant recommendations!)
Cabo’s late spring shoulder season might be the destination’s best-kept secret
Not only are temperatures still perfectly pleasant (warm in the day
vivacious spring break scene gives way to much calmer vibes
Though the whales have left for cooler waters
the warmer sea water makes it more amenable for swimming
(Expect water temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit during May and June.)
temperatures start to rise with daytime highs usually reaching the upper 80s
you’ll see that the spring shoulder season makes for quite a lovely season in Los Cabos
Late summer into early fall is when temperatures rise well into the 90s (Fahrenheit) during the day
bringing a thick blanket of humidity and plenty of rain
While the rain makes it a bit more difficult to catch those southern Baja rays
lush landscape that contrasts beautifully against the otherwise rocky desert environment
Because this is the Pacific hurricane season
you may need to keep a close eye on the weather forecast in case a major storm makes its way to Los Cabos
the tourist crowds thin out making way for the cheapest hotel rates and airfares
As long as you don’t mind damper weather and reduced operating hours at some restaurants and nightclubs
the summer season is ideal for bargain hunters
October typically marks the tail end of the Pacific hurricane season
There’s still some risk of tropical storms reaching shore
but Cabo almost always gets more rain and storms during August and September
Temperatures usually only reach into the mid-80s (Fahrenheit) during the day and drop to the 60s at night
While you’ll notice prices rising in time for the Thanksgiving U.S
you’ll find a number of great deals earlier in fall
If you don’t mind hotter temperatures and some risk of rain
book an October trip to enjoy some of the lowest prices and smallest crowds outside the summer low season
For nicer weather and more activities in and around town
Now that we’ve given you an overview of Los Cabos’ high
here’s a more detailed month-by-month guide
Keep in mind that events and details are subject to change
but even the coldest day here is still pretty warm
Daytime highs almost always surpass 70 degrees Fahrenheit
Expect large crowds and high hotel prices through the first week of the month
Todos Santos Tropic of Cancer Music & Arts Festival
You’ll still be enjoying plenty of sunny days in Cabo
only this time with much more space to yourself
February offers a “sweet spot” of thinner crowds and pleasant weather
as it’s after the winter holidays and before the spring break rush
Daytime temperatures begin to inch their way into the 80s during the month of March, and with the start of spring break in schools
you’ll notice an uptick in both families and younger travelers looking to party poolside by day and bar-hop by night
US colleges’ spring break season is winding down
and Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations are kicking up in Los Cabos
Expect high room rates and lots of people out on the beaches
Since Cabo San Lucas (at the southwestern tip of Los Cabos) has more of the luxury hotels and all-inclusive resorts catering to U.S
Meanwhile to the east of Cabo San Lucas and the Tourist Corridor of major name-brand resorts
San José del Cabo tends to be much more laid back
the entire region begins to calm down as temperatures rise
The southern tip of the Baja Peninsula is a tropical desert, and June weather will certainly remind you of that. The days stay hot, and precipitation is virtually nonexistent. But, that does not stop Los Cabos from hosting various events. From surf competitions to golf and music, Los Cabos has plenty to entertain.
Key events: Los Cabos Open of Surf, Stars & Stripes Fishing & Golf Tournament, Fiesta de la Música, Gala de Danza
Scorching temperatures peak in Los Cabos in July. You may see a rainstorm here and there, but precipitation is still pretty rare at the peak of summer. July begins turtle-nesting-season in Los Cabos. It’s also the peak time of year for summer vacations, which means beaches can be crowded and hotel occupancy high.
Blazing temperatures and thick humidity continue. Thunderstorms start to become a more normal occurrence towards the end of the month. Still, fishing is in full swing in the Sea of Cortez.
Key events: East Cape Bisbee Tournament, Festival del Mango Todos Santos
Los Cabos crashes into September with a roll of thunder and heavy rain. While hurricane season is said to start in June, the roughest storms actually tend to hit in September. If you’re coming during this month, prepare for the possibility of multiple rainy days.
Storms continue into October, though they tend to taper off considerably when compared to September. October is also when Los Cabos begins to prepare for the rush of the holiday high season. Hotel rates start to climb, and the events calendar starts to pick up again, especially when it comes to fishing tournaments.
Key events: Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, Bisbee's International Black & Blue Tournament, Fiestas Tradicionales Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos Gran Fondo
After months of heat and humidity, the temperatures start to feel considerably cooler in November and the rain starts to fade away. Peak season is just around the corner, so it’s best to book November travel a few months in advance to secure lower prices, especially if you’re planning for a tropical (and popular) Thanksgiving getaway.
You’ll also notice a busier event calendar in November, which includes events like the San José del Cabo Art Walks and the organic market.
Key events: Day of the Dead, Los Cabos International Film Festival, Todos Santos Film Festival, VIP Summit
Peak season officially kicks off when the calendar flips to December. This month kicks off whale watching season and crowds start to arrive in droves. Hotel rates reach all-time highs, especially around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Still, this is one of the most energetic times to be in Los Cabos, with holiday celebrations, foodie events, and many parties to enjoy.
Key events: Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival, Sabor a Cabo Festival, Las Posadas Christmas celebrations, New Year’s Eve Fireworks
If you only visited Baja California Sur in May
you would think it was obsessed with jazz: several of the state’s foremost tourism destinations — including La Paz
and Todos Santos — feature performance-based jazz events during the month
The occasion for these events is the International Jazz Festival to accompany the Uneaco-sponsored International Jazz Day. Beyond listening enjoyment, the UN agency proclaimed International Jazz Day in 2011 to unify people worldwide
Neither La Paz nor Todos Santos is technically in Los Cabos— they’re in the municipality of La Paz
one of the joys of visiting Los Cabos is accessibility to multiple destinations within easy driving distance; one hour to Todos Santos from Cabo San Lucas
It’s hard to imagine a more laid-back setting than El Mirador Ocean View Restaurant in Todos Santos, site of Baja Jazz 2025. Monterrey native Tito Rodríguez headlines the event
Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the United States than in Mexico. But this celebration of Mexico’s victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla is used
like virtually everything else in Cabo San Lucas
a boozy DJ-enhanced event at one of the Land’s End city’s signature bars that arrives three days early
Cost: $103 for a 3-hour open bar
These festivities are mostly centered along the Malecón boardwalk
Swimming conditions don’t get any better than in the water off Playa Palmilla
which explains why this cove is the site of the swimming portion of the annual Ironman 70.3 half triathlon in October and the Cortés Open
The latter features four different race distances — 1.3
5 and 7 kilometers — and welcomes swimmers of all ages and skill levels
The La Paz-based celebration of International Jazz Day welcomes Victor Patrón
Sonia Steves and local performers for free concerts on the city’s scenic seaside Malecón

which is both a celebration of the galleries in the historic downtown Gallery District and of the work of local artists
whose work is shown less formally on easels that lined in front of City Hall and indeed throughout Plaza Mijares
It was appropriate because Tropicana is itself a secular temple for art, from the Leonora Carrington and Alejandro Velasco sculptures currently displayed throughout the property to the onsite galleries spotlighting the work of local and Maya artists
because Art Walk isn’t just a celebration of art but of the downtown heart of the city
and this new downtown hotel has been one of the centerpieces of the Centro for more than 40 years
Rather remarkably, Tropicana Los Cabos has
pulled off the neat trick of being simultaneously the newest and oldest hotel in San José del Cabo
When the tourist age began in Los Cabos during the 1950s, the first hotels were in or around San José del Cabo
Not only was San José del Cabo more populated than Cabo San Lucas
but it had been around longer and was the seat of local government
the first guesthouse in the area opened in 1951 in the center of San José
and Abelardo “Rod” Rodríguez Jr.’s Hotel Palmilla opened just outside the then town’s borders in 1956
developments largely moved elsewhere for the ensuing decades
It wasn’t until 1981 when the Hotel El Presidente was opened on what is now referred to as the Playa Hotelera that the town began to flourish as a tourism destination
built on the site of a locally owned Mini Market that had been a grocery and gathering place for locals since the 1950s
became a hotel in 1985 thanks to its then-Canadian owner
Importantly, it was opened near the town square, Plaza Mijares. Benchmark properties in the area today like El Encanto Inn (1998) and Casa Natalia (1999) wouldn’t open until more than a decade later
The hotel thus occupied an important location and its iconic sidewalk restaurant became a major downtown attraction
Tropicana Inn was not the first hotel in San José. That had been Casa Fisher when San José had an estimated 1,200 residents. Nor was it the oldest extant as long as El Presidente was around— which it was for decades, under the imprimatur of hospitality brands such as Stouffer, Intercontinental and Holiday Inn
But when that esteemed property shuttered for good during the COVID-19 pandemic
became the most historic lodging in what was now a thriving city of 136,235 people
As someone who occasionally visited the Tropicana in its previous incarnation
I was gratified to see that the new look version has much the same laid-back vibe as its predecessor
it has nearly doubled the occupancy of the old 38-room hotel — and it’s significantly nicer
Having Hilton as a partner has that effect
Many traditional chairs and barstools appeared to have been transplanted wholesale from the old property
A corner of the new courtyard is graced by the same 90-year-old huanacaxtle tree that towered over the previous version and now spills over the second story to shade morning yoga classes
The facade is nicer but retains the basic character of the original
and the sidewalk café that was a gathering place for generations of locals is once again open
albeit newly designed and with a new name and menu concept: Cocina de las Californias
The hotel is trying to remain true to what it once was: a local stomping ground that is also a stylish and comfortable accommodation for tourists who want to be right in the heart of the downtown area
That’s not to say there won’t be pushback from locals
But without periodic improvements and upgrades
Tropicana’s accents and amenities are intended to reflect its central location
the hotel maintains complimentary bicycles — old-school Huffy cruisers — that guests can grab for downtown jaunts
as much a San José specialty as farm-to-table dining
is showcased inside Cocina de las Californias
albeit in a much airier design than the dark
wood-paneled version used for the restaurant’s previous incarnation
A second-story aerie at the front is reserved for private parties and can accommodate about 40
with room for 25 in the private dining room
Just outside the restaurant but in the hotel’s interior
is a patio used for breakfast service and framed by two gently gurgling fountains
is flawlessly landscaped and manicured and is surrounded by rooms and suites
with a spa on the second floor near the morning yoga terrace
Accommodations feature king-sized beds and artsy accents
from wall paintings to Talavera-style bathroom tiles and Saltillo-esque tile floors
including a game room with a billiard table and a smaller table for chess and backgammon games
with a second more artisanally-themed bar nearby
A mix of accents and amenities new and old

La Paz is seeing robust tourism numbers, with 194% more international arrivals in January 2025 compared to the same month in 2024
suggesting a strong year is underway for the capital of Baja California Sur
After record numbers in recent years, Los Cabos continues to draw plenty of visitors in 2025. However, slight decreases have been noted, with visitors down 1.6% in January compared to the previous year and hotel rates slipping 5% over the 2024 average— albeit still expensive at US $508 per night
Los Cabos’ increased popularity in recent years has been made possible by enhanced connectivity to U.S
Mexican low-cost Volaris is the latest airline to bring tourists to San José del Cabo International Airport with daily flights from Oakland
The new route began on March 20 and will continue indefinitely
Two flights leave Oakland Airport every afternoon and return daily from SJD at 5:09 and 8:30 p.m
“This new service makes travel to Cabo more convenient and affordable than ever for millions of Bay Area travelers,” confirms Craig Simon, Port of Oakland’s Aviation Director
Notably, California provides more Los Cabos tourists than any other U.S. state. In 2024, 32% of all U.S. visitors to the destination originated in the Golden State. This is reflected in the level of connectivity, with eight airports in the state servicing Los Cabos
2025 hasn’t brought a great spring break season for Cancún, which has seen its numbers drop from an all-time high of 120,000 to the 30,000–35,000 projected for this year. This downturn, coinciding with decreased numbers in the other popular Mexican destinations, has allowed Los Cabos to assert itself as the nation’s premier spring break spot

It’s perhaps the nation’s most spectacular beach
it’s also one of the few tourists have to pay to visit
Playa Balandra has been a Protected Natural Area (ANP) since 2012. As such, a maximum tally of visitors has since been instituted to ensure clean conditions and sustainability. There are now two timeframes to visit the beach, morning and afternoon, each capped at 450 visitors. As of 2025, tourists must make reservations, paying 120 pesos for a digital bracelet through the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp)
The bracelets should be purchased before arriving at the beach as you can’t buy them there
While prospective travelers are online planning a Balandra visit, they’ll also want to check out the new digital initiatives unveiled by the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (Fiturca)
including virtual reality tours of hotels and activities

This new technology is expected to boost Los Cabos’ profile in countries outside North America — where it is already a popular vacation destination — increasing visits from places like the United Kingdom
Fiturca has also partnered with AudioEye to make accessing its new digital features easy for everyone, including those with disabilities. Even without VR headsets, the new Los Cabos 360 tool provides stunning 360-degree views of the top local attractions and offers easy-to-click

Destination Editor Melissa Yeager on the rooftop of El Ganzo Hotel in San José del Cabo
The word "Cabo" alone likely conjures visions in your mind of stunning
you're wistful for a stay in one of the luxury resorts that draw in Hollywood A-listers and other celebrities
Long a popular winter escape from the United States
the region of Los Cabos is attracting new interest across the Atlantic thanks to new nonstop flights to countries in Europe
I have no shortage of reasons that you should consider Cabo for your next beach vacation (sun
But as a destination editor for Lonely Planet
I'm also always trying to look at popular places from a new perspective and gather ideas of where I can help you break free from the crowds and experience something new.
That's why I recently accepted an invitation from the Los Cabos Tourism Board to check out its blossoming rural tourism scene
which can be a great launching pad for outdoor adventure in the area
If you're the type of person who loves a resort
but is ready to do something different after a couple days
you might want to consider adding a couple days in the countryside to your itinerary.
Los Cabos refers to the regional area that includes the twin cities of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas
located at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.
When most people say they're headed to "Cabo" - they're usually referring to one of these cities to soak up some sun and disconnect from the frenetic pace of life. Along with dreamy resorts and stunning beaches
you’ll also find a little bit of everything an outdoor enthusiast would love here: snorkeling
But there are also several smaller villages in the area like Santiago
which can offer a chance to connect with nature and people in the way you only can if you’re willing to stray away from the typical itinerary.
After my international flight landed, I hopped in a car from Transcabo, one of the transport services in the area. From there
I made the hour-long journey north from the airport in San José del Cabo through the desert landscape to the village of Santiago.
Planning tip: if you’re planning to stay in the more rural areas
grab sunscreen and other sundries before you leave the airport.
On arrival, our taxi driver nearly passed the discreet entrance to Amet Nature Retreat
which is tucked behind a gate along a desert road
When the sliding gate rolled back to reveal the lush and stunning oasis hidden behind it
The owner was a banker in Switzerland before she returned home to Mexico and bought the nearby property for her personal residence
she discovered a natural spring underneath the property
She paid to have it dredged to create the calm freshwater oasis
She then bought the property next door and in late 2024
adults-only 6-room property (three elevated glamping tents
three upscale rooms with views) was created by her son. With few guests to compete with
The chef determines the menu each day based on what is fresh from the market and nearby farms.
Staying in Santiago puts you strategically a bit closer to one of my “do not miss” highlights of the area: Parque Nacional Cabo Pulmo
If you were to come to this park from Cabo San Lucas
which can limit your time to experience the park
The protected area caps the number of visitors - so you’ll want to plan in advance by booking a tour
it’s rare to see others on the water near you
The Sea of Cortez boasts crystal clear water and a variety of stunning wildlife to observe
but my favorite part was observing the whales
which make their way down to the seas around Los Cabos in March to give birth to their babies
We saw spectacular breaches by whale families who were very active while we were there
we were the only boat observing the ballet by these magnificent mammals
we headed back to our resort in Santiago. Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy beaches
you get a chance to really soak up the slower pace.
The area is a great launching pad for other outdoor activities as well
You can take a hiking trip to Sol or to El Refugio
The trailhead for the trail full of boulders starts on a farmer’s ranch so youʻll need to call ahead to get access to it
but you can also arrange for the owner to make you a delicious post-hike lunch of quesadillas.
My favorite experience was starting off the first evening at the hotel with the cultural experience of a cacao ceremony in the fire pit area of the resort
the meditation was ultra relaxing and put me in the right mindset for the rest of the trip.
You’ll have a great time but probably exhaust everything to do in Santiago in a couple days
I think this is a great trip to combine with one of the larger cities in the Los Cabos area: San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas.
I ended up in San José del Cabo staying at Hotel El Ganzo
a boutique artsy resort that boasts a private beach club as well as a stunning rooftop with views for days.
A couple of recommendations on what to do here. If you love spotting wildlife, go out with Dan from Uncharted Expeditions. He has deep knowledge, respect and passion for the ocean that is contagious, and you’ll come back with a new appreciation for the oceanic ecosystem. He also is a great photographer and brings all his gear including a drone so you can see the wildlife from above.
If you’re ready for time in town after being in the rural areas, head to the Gallery District of San José del Cabo, which is an extremely walkable area with tons of art galleries and restaurants to visit.
My favorite meal of the trip was at Don Sanchez, which boasts contemporary Mexican cuisine. Order one of their cocktails to start your meal - the presentation dazzles - or have the waiter recommend one of the local Mexican wines on the menu. The waiters are well versed in each course they bring, giving you new insight to the produce available in the area and appreciation for the area of Los Cabos.

To say Los Cabos is experiencing rapid population growth is a massive understatement
the population in the municipality that’s home to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo grew by 47%
increasing from 238,487 residents to 351,111
the population of México as a whole grew by a little over 11% during the decade from 2010 to 2020
it bears noting that this Los Cabos population explosion pales compared to the one from 2000 to 2010 when the growth rate was an astonishing 126%
the population in Los Cabos more than doubled in 10 years
It also pales compared to the decade before that (1990 to 2000) when Los Cabos’ growth rate was a jaw-dropping 140% — as the municipality’s population spiraled from a mere 43,920 residents to over 100,000 (105,469
These numbers, courtesy of the Gobierno de Baja California Sur’s 2023 Secretaría de Turismo y Economía report on Los Cabos paint a remarkable picture
the population grew from just over 40,000 to more than 350,000
Nearly half the people in Baja California Sur (44%) now live in Los Cabos
If you’re a long-time vacationer to Los Cabos and feel the destination looks markedly different each time you visit
Construction projects now proliferate in the cape cities
and each time we walk or drive by new apartment buildings
we see them inching a little closer to completion — with more projects coming up behind them

Where are all the new people moving to Los Cabos from originally? There are fewer from the U.S. than you might think. Despite all the real estate sales and the growth of the digital nomad lifestyle, only 1,452 of the 63,440 new residents from 2015 to 2020 hailed from the U.S
that’s significantly more than any other country
Cuba provided the second most foreign-born Los Cabos residents during that period
it bears noting that the expatriate population has remained remarkably stable in recent years
Just over 17,400 extranjeros live in Los Cabos (more than 10,000 of them from the U.S.)
expats account for only about 3% of the local population
and foreign-born residents around 5% overall
as one might expect given the influx of workers from other areas of México
Although Los Cabos has experienced rapid population growth sustained across several decades
it hasn’t proven consistent for all the towns and cities (there are but two of these: Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo) located within the bounds of the municipality
Santiago saw its population decline by 139 residents from 2010 to 2020
the nearby farming community of Miraflores grew by 28 residents during the same decade
It’s the cities where the growth is undeniably evident
the population of San José del Cabo nearly doubled in size
where the population almost tripled during the same timeframe
traditionally smaller than San José del Cabo
Los Cabos’ runaway growth shows no signs of slowing down

This excursion was the perfect introduction to Baja California Sur
but one that left me a bit confused since I’d always thought of Los Cabos as a party destination
What I learned is that San Jose del Cabo is often lumped in with Cabo San Lucas – together
the two towns are known as Los Cabos (“the capes”)
the two are very different: San Jose del Cabo
known as the “Old Town,” prides itself on its rich history; while Cabo San Lucas
the “Party Town,” has evolved into a package-deal destination that celebrates the Cabo Wabo way of life

There are three unofficial ways to do Baja
The first is all about luxury: five-star hotels
The second is running around with bare feet and eating tacos out the back of a pick-up
And then there’s a glamping-style hybrid of the two
But Cabo San Lucas is the rare place in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur where all three kinds of travelers have a great time—partly because the food is so good
Here are the restaurants to prioritize in Cabo San Lucas and nearby San José del Cabo
whether you want places serving tortas and fish tacos drenched in lime
burritos that epitomize the binational culture of the border region
or fine dining spots that grow their own fruits and vegetables

El Farallon in the Waldorf Astoria feels more like a movie set than real life
and the menu is designed around what’s caught
Try a bit of everything by ordering the “Baja Bounty,” a mixed grill selection of sea bass
You’ll need to make a reservation well in advance
but regardless of whether you snag a spot for a fresh lunch or a candle-lit dinner at the restaurant’s elegant cliffside terrace

Paseo de la Marina
Fine dining in Cabo is becoming more of a thing
but it’s really the casual seafood spots that the area is known (and loved) for
a small mom-and-pop restaurant with kitschy gamefish mounted on the walls
and is famous for serving quintessential Baja dishes
Go for things like the fish and shrimp tacos (either breaded or grilled
doused in lime and wrapped in a warm flour tortilla)
and the shrimp molcajete: a house specialty red stew of shrimp
and onion served in a Mexican mortar and pestle
PlayUnmuteHacienda Cocina & CantinaPaseo de la Marina Cabo San Lucas
Mexican
Hacienda is typically referred to as a destination restaurant
and a big part of that reputation has to do with the fact that this Mexican restaurant overlooks the ocean and has a giant wooden deck
But we also love it for its friendly service and dishes that aren’t as commonly found on the lower peninsula
like chiles rellenos or chicken with Puebla-style mole
or a steak torta sandwich with refried beans and avocado

Downtown
A lot of taquerias say they’ve got “the best tacos in town.” But the Sinaloa-style seafood tacos at Los Claros earn the title
Located a few blocks away from Cabo’s main tourist quarters downtown
Claros is a well-oiled operation that easily accommodates big groups
and does northern Mexican classics really well

An underrated part about visiting Baja is trying the Japanese-Mexican food scene
Don’t let its comparatively modest downtown exterior and bare-bones dining room fool you: Nicksan makes the best sushi in Cabo
and has been a local favorite since it first opened in 1994

Don’t be fooled by Raw Baja’s low-key vibe and reasonable prices—the quality of its seafood
The chefs work closely with suppliers to bring in the best of the best
A perfect example of all that effort: the tuna tostada
which features meticulously sourced bluefin tuna neatly laid out under a bed of sliced cucumber and serrano pepper

These days, it’s almost impossible to talk about modern Mexican dining without mentioning Enrique Olvera, the owner and head chef of Pujol in Mexico City

In the heart of San Jose del Cabo, an unassuming white building sits tucked away among art galleries and cervecerías, not a terracotta pot or waving palm frond out of place. This is Drift Hotel—or
as they proclaim on their equally aesthetically minimalistic website
“Baja’s best kept secret.” Everything about it exudes simplicity and authenticity
an indicator of Drift’s attempt to replicate Baja’s naturally airy
The 29 rooms are elegantly sparse and appropriately named dreamy things like “Surfer's Retreat” and “Paradise Cove.” Black-trimmed square windows let the warm Mexican sun into square rooms with white walls
Artisanal wicker lamp shades hanging from the ceilings cast a diffused glow across spaces minimally decorated with natural materials and the creations of local artists
Drift’s appreciation of Baja’s arid environment and desert style are reflected in each detail and corner of the two-person hotel rooms
many of which overlook a gravel courtyard teeming with palm trees and other native plants
Sunken into the courtyard’s center is a heated pool as simple yet enjoyable as every other aspect of the hotel
Although San Jose del Cabo is home to some of the best restaurants in Baja California Sur—many of which are helpfully suggested on the hotel’s website—Drift has a full-service restaurant of their own that serves up a tasty local breakfast
it’s also important to note that drinks and mezcal are available every and all day from the mezcal bar
plant-studded patio turns into a backyard party every Thursday
and live music courtesy of the grooviest DJs
The promise of an unparalleled social vibe until nearly midnight draws in Drift guests and travallers alike
making the hotel buzz with the best of Cabo
a salon offering everything from massages to manicures for those looking to relax even more
Drift uniquely understands the need to relax and decompress
but they’re no stranger to the all-encompassing urge to explore that has millions of tourists sailing down Baja’s Highway 1 on a meandering road trip
free parking and a food and beverage credit for those wanderers looking to rest their heads for a while and enjoy their time in serene San Jose del Cabo
The shimmering ocean waters and pristine beaches that the area is so beloved for are only a short 15 minute trip from the hotel; to make playing in the waves even easier
Drift offers a complimentary surf package complete with longboards
Also complimentary is the hour long yoga session held every Saturday in the courtyard for guests and locals
And if for some reason one can’t make it down to Mexico

Receive the best travel industry news every day
it’s worth noting that San Lucas and San José aren’t the only communities in a municipality encompassing nearly 1,500 square miles
The East Cape has always been a favorite of longtime visitors
as its sparse population and uncrowded beaches are more reminiscent of “the old Cabo.” But it’s becoming increasingly popular with younger travelers
thanks to a growing inventory of excellent accommodation options to accompany its perfect conditions for outdoor activities like diving
The “Tourist Corridor,” the 20-mile stretch of coastline connecting the cape cities
as it is home to more world-class luxury resorts than any other area of Los Cabos
Just as the time of year you choose to travel to Los Cabos affects the cost of accommodations so too does where one’s lodging of choice is located. According to the Los Cabos Tourism Board (Fiturca), the average daily room rate for a hotel or resort in Cabo San Lucas this June
it was $633 — more than double the cost of a room in either of the cape cities
These differences also hold true during the high season, even as accommodation costs are higher across the municipality. Why? Because each of these areas, by and large, specializes in certain types of lodgings. The Tourist Corridor, as mentioned, is a hub of beachfront luxury resorts. Cabo San Lucas, by contrast, offers far more budget-friendly alternatives in its city center
with a raft of all-inclusive resorts fronting its miles-long Médano Beach shoreline
All-inclusive properties are likewise common along the Playa Hotelera in San José del Cabo
with more boutique hotels available in its historic downtown district
It also influences the quality of your vacation
boast gorgeous beaches — also have unique charms and offer certain distinctive attractions that add value to a vacation
Cabo San Lucas not only has the cheapest accommodations in Los Cabos
it’s also home to the biggest and most popular beach — two-miles-long Playa El Médano — and a series of picturesque beaches and evocative rock formations at Land’s End
which are gateways to great snorkeling and diving
Cabo San Lucas is also famous for its fishing
Its marina is the biggest in the area: meaning there are plenty of charter boats and sunset sails to choose from
But the one thing Cabo San Lucas has that you won’t find anywhere else in Los Cabos is great nightlife
But there’s still Cabo Wabo Cantina and El Squid Roe
two legendary nightspots — and colorful bars and lounges proliferate throughout the Land’s End city
Not every resort in the Tourist Corridor is luxurious
But this golden stretch is the setting for many of the best resorts in Los Cabos
Esperanza and Chileno Bay (both Auberge Resorts)
Montage Los Cabos and Grand Velas Los Cabos
and one thing most resorts in the Tourist Corridor have in common is that you don’t need to leave the resort to have an incredible vacation
swimming pools and beaches are available on-site
However, it’s worth pointing out that great shopping and dining are also available offsite along the Tourist Corridor: notably, at Shoppes at Palmilla and El Merkado. As for beaches, there are several Blue Flag beaches in the Tourist Corridor
including traditional favorites like Playa Chileno
San José del Cabo is the seat of local government and the cultural capital of Los Cabos. The city is renowned for its historic downtown Gallery District. It also boasts the best dining scene in the region, highlighted by the farm-to-table restaurants found just outside the city proper in Ánimas Bajas
The marina at Puerto Los Cabos facilitates many outdoor activities options
and Puerto Los Cabos is also home to world-class golf
No average room rate data is available for East Cape lodgings
likely since there are far fewer hotels here than in Cabo San Lucas
San José del Cabo or their connecting corridor
that’s likely to change as continued growth pushes development further up the coast
One major recent development on the East Cape
with another from Amanvari scheduled to open in 2025
East Cape hotels are generally smaller and more affordable than those elsewhere in Los Cabos
Since the communities on the East Cape are also more sparsely populated and see fewer tourists
visitors can get away from more crowded areas of Los Cabos and experience one of the great destinations in the world for outdoor activities
notably for Bisbee’s lucrative East Cape Offshore tournament

Held annually since 2012, this film festival has hosted dozens of big-name actors and directors
the focus remains on strengthening collaborative ties between the North American film industries

All-inclusive resorts are a great option for family travel
especially when you’re looking for an easy vacation with no discussions about where to eat dinner or back-and-forth debates over who’s paying the bill
I recently returned from a week at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos with my family — and it was a fantastic vacation
I traveled with 10 other people and this resort was perfect for the laid-back family vacation that we were looking for
so you can decide if Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is a good choice for your next family vacation
Located in San José del Cabo, near the tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula in Mexico, Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is just a 20-minute drive from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)
The resort itself is located right on the beach overlooking the Sea of Cortez (also called the Gulf of California)
It’s about 30 minutes north of the town of Cabo San Lucas (including the famous arch) and about 2.5 hours from La Paz
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and a popular spot for water activities
Day trips to La Paz are available from Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
but it’s a long drive which makes for a very full day
The hotel offers transportation to and from the airport
A private transfer for 1 to 10 people was $130 one-way
I looked around and ended up booking through a separate company for $90 for a round-trip for up to 6 people
Some of the members of our group took a taxi to and from the airport and the cost was about $50 each way
Hot Tip: While Uber is available in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo
it’s not available to use to or from the airport
so you’ll want to get a local taxi or arrange for private transport
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has been on my radar for a while as I have been eager to try out a Hyatt Ziva property. Hyatt Ziva is a brand of family-friendly all-inclusive resorts bookable using World of Hyatt points. Its sister brand, Hyatt Zilara
the cash rate for 2 people in a Master King room (the base level room) was $577 per night
which would have been a total of $4,038 for my 7-night stay
Instead of paying over $4,000, I used World of Hyatt points
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos was a Category B all-inclusive with a cost of 17,000 points (off-peak)
I paid 149,000 points for 7 nights for 2 people (4 nights at standard pricing and 3 nights at peak pricing). That worked out to a value of 2.7 cents per point, which is great considering we value Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each
Hot Tip: Unfortunately, since my stay, Hyatt made some major category changes
this resort has moved to Category D which costs 25,000 points (off-peak)
As a reminder, Hyatt has a separate award chart for all-inclusive resorts
Here’s a look at what you’ll pay for 1 or 2 people in a standard room at any Hyatt all-inclusive resort:
you might have noticed that I gave you the price for only 2 people even though my daughter was traveling with us
I actually just booked her in my mom’s room
The cost in points is the same for 1 or 2 people
so it didn’t cost anything extra to add her to my mom’s reservation
the cost is different for 1 person versus 2 people in a room
I could have paid half the amount of points that it costs for up to 2 people to add my daughter to the room
The cost in points of adding a third or fourth person to a room is as follows:
It now costs 13,000 to 17,000 points to add an additional person to a room at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
There’s also the option to add a third or fourth person in cash for ~$125 each per night
so you’ll want to double-check the cost for your specific travel dates
the cost in points is the same for 1 or 2 people in a room
A third and fourth person can be added for additional points
the cost will increase for each additional person added to the room
we were greeted with cold towels and sparkling wine
Our luggage was set aside and we were instructed to go to the check-in counter which was located in the large open-air lobby
We had to fill out forms and wait for quite a while while the front desk attendant got everything done
I was eligible for a room upgrade (excluding suites) at check-in
The front desk attendant started looking and told me there was an ocean-view room available
she told me the upgraded room wouldn’t be available until Monday
I knew the hotel was pretty full as it was Presidents’ Day weekend
so I wasn’t too surprised and agreed to take the upgrade on Monday
she mentioned the cost would be $100 per night
I was surprised there was a cost and that it wasn’t mentioned at the start of the conversation. When I asked her about the Hyatt elite member upgrade benefit
she said it was only for a 1-category room upgrade and that would be to the Ziva Suite
I had looked at the room categories ahead of time and knew I didn’t want a Ziva Suite
While it sounds great and the room is definitely bigger
it only had a Juliet balcony which was a deal-breaker for me
I declined the paid upgrade and took the original room I was assigned
Hot Tip: Another interesting thing about check-in at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos was that I was informed of an additional fee that wasn’t disclosed at the time of booking
the hotel started collecting an environmental tax of Mex$36.31 (~$2) per day
The amount was so low I didn’t bother questioning it
but it was mildly annoying that I wasn’t informed of this fee ahead of time
I hope this tax will eventually be mentioned at the time of booking so it’s not a surprise in the future
Explorist members are eligible for some extra benefits at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos:
I was thrilled to see I was eligible for a spa discount since that was something I was planning to do anyways
The Club Lounge access was surprising since it’s generally reserved for Globalist members or those who booked a Club-level room
Hot Tip: At check-in, you’ll be asked to provide a credit card so you can charge extras like spa treatments to your room. I provided The World of Hyatt Credit Card so I could earn up to 9 total points per dollar. If you do the same, double-check your statement when you get home. The charges were listed as “Playa Cabos Baja” which didn’t code as a Hyatt. I had to call Chase to get the points adjusted.
There are tons of amenities at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos — and most of them are included in the room cost
there are 2 small pools connected to the swim-up rooms
The infinity pool — the closest pool to the beach — was where the action was at
This pool was heated and had a swim-up bar
so this is where we spent the majority of our time
Another benefit to the infinity pool was the 2 adjacent hot tubs
The week we were there was during a cold spell in the area
so the hot tubs got a lot of use during our trip
heated pools connected to the swim-up rooms (1 at the main pool and 1 at the adults-only pool)
Each swim-up room had a patio area with 2 lounge chairs in the water
Cabanas were available for rent around the pools and at the beach
With the exception of a handful of premium cabanas
the cost to rent one for the day was $80 per day
I would suggest doing it before you arrive (the concierge can send you information
I tried to book one a couple of days in advance and they were almost sold out
I didn’t like the location of the 1 or 2 remaining cabanas
the entertainment staff plays music and games in the middle of the infinity pool
If you are looking for a quieter experience
avoid the cabanas that are located between the 2 pools
The get-up-early-to-save-pool-chairs game was in full effect at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
While there were lots of chairs around the pools
if you wanted some in a specific area or had a large group like me (I was traveling with 10 other people)
Thanks to my future sister-in-law reserving our chairs before breakfast each morning
we got our desired location each day we were there
The adults-only pool was tucked away at the side of the resort behind a building
It would be very easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it
While it’s nice to have a pool without kids
the adults-only pool lacked the ambiance of the main pools
It was sandwiched between buildings and the next hotel
so you didn’t have to go far to get a drink
there were cabanas around the pool that could be rented for the day
while on other days it was chaos (including the day of the foam dance party)
The kid’s pool area was located right next to the kid’s club
It looked like an excellent spot for younger kids to enjoy
my 9-year-old wanted nothing to do with it
There were a few small water slides and the shallow depth made it suitable for babies and young kids who can’t swim
Bottom Line: There is no shortage of pools at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
including a heated infinity pool that overlooks the beach
there are 2 hot tubs right next to the main infinity pool
The beach at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is beautiful
but most of the time it’s not swimmable due to very strong waves
it’s beautiful to look at and it stretches for miles in both directions
so I didn’t feel I was missing out as I wouldn’t have gone swimming anyway
The beach in front of Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is extremely wide
but it gets much softer closer to the ocean
there were some local vendors that tried to sell us hats
I had mixed feelings about this but my daughter was dying to ride one
so my brother was guilted into riding with her
We paid $50 for 2 people for a 30-minute ride
Another great thing about the beach at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is that you can sometimes see whales
The hotel has a bell set and a staff member will ring it if a whale is spotted
I was able to see whales a couple of times
although my sightings were pretty far away
The other cool thing you can see from the beach is baby manta rays jumping out of the water
These were really cool to see and fairly common
Bottom Line: The beach at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is beautiful
so it’s perfect for a beach walk or whale watching
The “Kidz” Club (aka free babysitting) is for kids ages 4 to 12 and is included in the price at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
There’s a clubhouse with a playground and a kids’ pool area that includes a mini water park
so it’s perfect for babies and younger kids who aren’t great swimmers yet
Since my daughter begged us to keep going back to the kids’ club the year prior at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa in Grand Cayman
I assumed she would love the Kidz Club here
She wasn’t excited when she first saw it and never wanted to go
I didn’t push it because she was having fun in the big pool and eventually met some friends her age there
“the kids club is full of 3-year-olds,” so she wasn’t going
I do think this kids’ area is better suited to younger children
Older kids (like my 9-year-old) may be much happier at the big pool
if you have toddlers or even kids up to maybe 7 or 8
There’s also a Teen Club at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
Bottom Line: The Kidz Club at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos offers supervised play and is included in the room cost
There was a theater onsite with nightly productions
there was a cabaret dinner show one night that had an extra charge
so I was excited to try out Zen Spa at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
Spa representatives came around the pool most days to try to sell you a spa treatment
I was planning on booking something anyways
so I was happy to be able to schedule it from my pool chair
I was eligible for a 20% discount on massages
the spa rep by the pool was offering a different deal that I ended up taking (which couldn’t be combined with the 20% discount)
we could add an additional 25-minute treatment (anything from a facial or reflexology to additional massage time)
they offered us an additional day of access to the hydrotherapy area at the spa
I’m still not sure if that was a better deal than taking the 20% off
but it was nice to have additional time in the spa
The hydrotherapy area of the Zen Spa included cold plunge pools (no
thank you) plus a heated pool with massage jets
There was also a sauna and steam room in this area
The Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos spa prices aren’t for the faint of heart
While they’re in the same ballpark as some other luxury resorts I have been to
the 80-minute massage I booked cost $290 (not including tip)
For anyone that doesn’t have the 20% discount offered to Explorists and Globalists
there was an offer available at check-in — you could book 2 80-minute massages plus 2 days of hydrotherapy for $499
That’s a decent deal if you’re planning to book 2 massages anyways
and it’s recommended to make reservations in advance
The fitness center was located on the fourth floor of the main building
had weight machines as well as free weights and kettlebells
There’s a Club Lounge at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
The club has a small buffet along with top-shelf liquor
There’s indoor seating as well as a nice outdoor patio
Official access is reserved for Club Level rooms
but my check-in letter listed it as a benefit of Explorist status
Bottom Line: Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has a Club Lounge with a small buffet and top-shelf liquor
The resort doesn’t accept Club Lounge Access Awards earned through Hyatt’s Milestone Rewards program
There are 2 gift shops on the property — 1 by the main pool and 1 by the lobby
The larger of the 2 gift shops was located just off to the side on the lobby level
The smaller gift shop by the pool had mostly pool attire and beach toys
There was also an additional shop next to the main gift shop that sold high-end sunglasses and jewelry
One of the biggest downsides to Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is the slow Wi-Fi
While the signal was decent in the common areas
the Wi-Fi in our room was mediocre at best
Many times we couldn’t access it at all and when we did
I didn’t notice any difference in the speed or availability of Wi-Fi between the times I was on the regular versus premium channels
The Discova Los Cabos tours and excursions desk is located right in the lobby of the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos Mexico and can assist with booking a range of activities
You can contact the hotel’s concierge to get a brochure of available activities prior to your stay.
We booked a scuba diving trip through the company used by the resort (Cabo Adventures) and had a very bad experience. In addition to the staff at Cabo Adventures being rude at check-in, we got faulty gear that wasn’t swapped out even after bringing it to the dive master’s attention. Additionally, the water conditions were so terrible the dive should have been canceled.
There are a staggering 21 different types of rooms at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos! The standard rooms that are bookable using Hyatt points are the Master King (see description below) and Master Double. The standard suite that is bookable using World of Hyatt points is called the Ziva Suite. Keep in mind that the Ziva Suite only has a Juliet balcony, so if you would prefer to have a full balcony, don’t book this room category.
The other room category worth noting is the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos swim-up rooms. These rooms include Club Level access and are considered premium suites. While the Hyatt all-inclusive award chart has points values listed for premium suites, in practice, I wasn’t able to find any dates where the swim-up rooms were bookable with points.
The swim-up rooms have direct access to a pool.Advertisement
I booked the base-level Master King room using Hyatt points and that is the exact room I stayed in during my trip
when I asked for a room upgrade at check-in
the only option that was complimentary was a Ziva Suite
While the extra space that room provides (619 square feet vs
594 square feet) may appeal to many families
it had 1 feature that was a deal breaker for me — a Juliet balcony
When I am traveling to a tropical destination
so I opted to stay in the smaller Master King room since it came with a full balcony
I noticed something peculiar — a happy birthday sign on the door
I assumed it was left over from the guests before us
The first thing I noticed when I first walked in was how large the space was — 594 square feet
That’s a great size for a standard room and it was plenty of space for our family of 3
A more traditional Mexican-style room decor featured terra cotta tiles and lots of dark wood
Immediately to the left upon entering were 2 closets and a minibar set-up
The first closet housed the safe and 2 robes
Next to that was the minibar area which offered additional counter space and shelves
The snacks and drinks were replenished daily
There was a coffee maker with Cafe Britt coffee and bottled water
The minifridge was also stocked with water
On the other side of the minibar area was a second closet that included more hanging space
The king-sized bed was flanked by matching nightstands
Each side of the bed had a built-in reading light that proved to be just about perfect
so I was able to still have some reading light while keeping the rest of the room dark
There was an alarm clock on one side of the bed and a phone on the opposite side
Each side of the bed had plenty of plugs and USB outlets
Next to the bed was a sleeper sofa that converted to a queen-sized bed
so it felt like it was in its own space even though it’s 1 big room
Housekeeping came and transformed the couch into a bed on our first night
Across from the main bed were a chest of drawers and a TV
Next to the set of drawers across from the pull-out couch was a small table and 2 chairs
The room had a private balcony with 2 chairs and a small table
The building that was in view from my balcony had rooms facing the other direction
so I didn’t have any other balconies looking onto mine which made it feel very private
Even though I was in the building furthest from the ocean
I could still see a bit of blue water from the balcony
I was perfectly content with this room and view
so I didn’t pursue moving to an ocean-view room for an extra $100 per day
Bottom Line: The Master King room is the base-level room at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and bookable using World of Hyatt points
the only complimentary room upgrade is to a Ziva Suite
which is a bit larger but only has a Juliet balcony
There were sliding doors across from the closets that led to the bathroom
It was great to have double sinks since there were 3 of us in the room
It’s not recommended to drink the water from the sink
so bottled water is provided to use while you brush your teeth
The toilet was behind a frosted glass door
I love it when the toilet is in its own room as it makes the bathroom so much for functional when multiple people are sharing a room
this door wasn’t quite opaque enough to make the toilet 100% private
The shower and jetted tub were in their own area as well
The shower size and water pressure were great
but the water temperature was very erratic
You’ll notice that there are folding shutters next to the bathtub
These can be opened or closed depending on the amount of privacy you want
The mini-sized shower products were from 2 mismatched brands — KenetMD and Bio Dos
Hot Tip: Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos made our lists of the best Mexico hotels to book with points and the best hotels to book with points in Los Cabos
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos does not have a shortage of food and beverage options as there are 15 different restaurants and bars on the property
Hacienda Baja Grill is the steakhouse at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos. The Latin-inspired menu serves a variety of steaks
I tried the Green Lantern mocktail which was a combination of kiwi
and mint and it was one of the most refreshing drinks I have ever had
Since I was dining with a large group of 11
our waiter brought us appetizers and side dishes family-style so we could try practically everything on the menu
Hacienda Baja Grill was open for dinner daily from 6 p.m
Dozo is the resort’s Japanese restaurant and offers a sushi bar in addition to teppanyaki (hibachi-style) grills
We really enjoyed the hibachi-style dinner
It was probably one of the best I’ve been to and it was cool that a few of us
Reservations are required for the teppanyaki grill tables
Bon Vivant is Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos’ adults-only French restaurant
I didn’t think we’d be able to try it out since my daughter was traveling with us
my in-laws decided to go to the buffet and she went with them
This elegant restaurant has a menu that features French-inspired dishes and desserts
The food was delicious but the service during our meal was exceptionally slow
I find that service in general is slower than U.S
standards at resorts like this and I go into each meal knowing it could take a while (after all
this meal seemed slow even by resort standards
Zaffiro is an open-air Italian restaurant overlooking the ocean
The night we went there was a wedding reception happening on the beach
so we got to enjoy some live music and fire performers while we ate
I really enjoyed the food at Zaffiro — especially the dessert
I ordered the Citrus & Red Berries Panna Cotta
and while it looked like a big green nose with carrot shavings and a dollop of jam
Zaffiro was open for dinner daily from 6 p.m
The food was delicious and the view was lovely
La Plaza is the international buffet at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
I am not a fan of buffets but we ended up eating breakfast here most mornings because it was the easiest option for our group
We were able to get a table for 11 outside on the patio each morning
La Plaza has a huge buffet with lots of options to choose from
breakfast was quite enjoyable each morning
I tend to overdo it on carbs in the morning during vacation and there were plenty of options to choose from
The Mexican oatmeal was tasty and I also enjoyed the Mexican bread and pastries
There was also a Mexican coffee that tasted like it had cinnamon and chocolate in it which was so delicious
The Plaza buffet was open for breakfast from 7 a.m
El Molino is the resort’s Mexican restaurant
I loved the style of this restaurant — it offered more traditional Mexican vibes with fun
including red and pink checkered tables and mismatched multi-colored glasses
This restaurant also opens as an extra buffet space in the mornings
El Molino was open for dinner daily between 6 p.m
Coco Loco Snack Bar is located right next to the main pool
I thought the pizza looked pretty mediocre but my daughter got it for lunch every day
Coco Loco Snack Bar was open daily from 11 a.m
El Catrín is a food truck located right next to the infinity pool that made the most delicious quesadillas
They were served with freshly made pico de gallo and guacamole
Spirit of 1968 is a sports bar inspired by the year that Mexico hosted the Olympics
El Piano Lobby Bar serves drinks all day long from 10 a.m
only guests 18 and older are allowed to enter
The Baja Bar is located at the adults-only pool and was open from 10 a.m
The only kind available was beef and they were made fresh while you waited
they were so delicious that I ended up getting them every day
El Mirador is an open-air martini bar located on a terrace on the lobby level
Reservations are required for tequila and mezcal tastings and additional charges will apply
Bar AZul is a swim-up bar located in the infinity pool
It served tropical cocktails and mocktails daily from 10 a.m
The Coffee House is located in the lobby and was open 24 hours a day
I stopped here at least once a day (usually more) for specialty coffees and pastries
Each morning (and throughout the day) there was self-serve coffee and tea available. They provide cups, but if you drink a lot of coffee as I do, I recommend bringing a travel mug with you to keep your coffee warm
you could order a number of specialty coffees
The Coffee House also served some lite bites and dessert
In the afternoon they had some sandwiches and lots of dessert items like cakes
The Healthy Bar is located outside near the main pool. It served fresh smoothies in the morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and poke, grain, and noodle bowls in the afternoon from 12 p.m
We ordered room service on our first night since we were all tired and didn’t feel like figuring out the restaurant situation
It was rather mediocre and was by far my least favorite meal of the whole vacation
Overall the service at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos was excellent
Everyone I came into contact with from the bartenders to the waiters to the spa staff was pleasant and helpful
The service at the restaurants tended to be a little slow
but I’ve learned that that is fairly typical at this type of resort
The biggest issue I had with the service at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos was the inconsistency of housekeeping
Our room wasn’t made up a few times and even after I called the front desk it was difficult to get someone to actually come to give us clean towels at the very least
The strange thing was that the inconsistency didn’t make sense
Some in our group had daily housekeeping without any issues while others didn’t
there was a day when my in-laws’ room was made up and ours wasn’t — they were next door to us
so it didn’t make any sense why our room was skipped (no
we didn’t have the do not disturb sign on the door)
the inconsistencies in service were a minor blip on an otherwise fantastic vacation
I really enjoyed my 7-night stay at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
It’s a beautiful resort that’s great for families
and the best part is that it can be booked using World of Hyatt points
the price in points has increased by about 50% as of March 28
so you’ll really need to look at the cost in cash versus the cost in points to make sure it’s a good deal for you
I can definitely recommend this resort if you’re looking for an easy and laid-back family vacation
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is about 13 miles from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is an all-inclusive resort
and even the kids’ club are included in the room cost
it’s most likely not worth it to pay extra for access to the Club Lounge at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos since food and beverages are included in your room cost already
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has a hurricane policy but it’s unpublished and can change at any time
It’s recommended to contact the resort before your trip to get the most up-to-date hurricane policy
the beach isn’t swimmable at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
All tips and gratuities are included in your room rate
tipping extra at the resort is common and appreciated by the staff
It’s recommended to not drink the tap water at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos
The resort provides unlimited bottled water in your room for drinking and brushing your teeth
served in restaurants will be filtered and safe to drink
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos doesn’t have a big waterpark
there is a mini waterpark with a few small slides in the kids’ pool area that is great for young children
Some restaurants have an “evening casual” dress code which means no beach attire
as long as you aren’t trying to go to a restaurant in a bathing suit
guests can park free of charge at the resort

Any time golfers get ready to drive off the first tee in Los Cabos
they should first say a brief thank you to the late Don Koll
and certainly nothing to interrupt waggles or swing thoughts
Just a quick nod before addressing the ball to acknowledge that Los Cabos would likely never have become the incredible golf destination it currently is without Koll’s vision and foresight
A major figure in Southern California real estate, Koll made three significant moves in Los Cabos during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. First, he bought land for the Cabo del Sol development in partnership with Robert Day in 1985
he purchased the iconic Hotel Palmilla — now One&Only Palmilla — in 1986
he paid golf legend Jack Nicklaus US $2.5 million to design golf courses for each
the all-time leader in major championships and then a burgeoning design superstar
He had been flying down for vacations in his Aero Commander since the 1960s
He was committed to taking advantage of the area’s diversity of ocean
desert and mountain terrains and felt he could create world-class layouts: in his words
a “Palm Springs by the sea” at Palmilla and a “Pebble Beach of Baja” at Cabo del Sol
When the first 18 holes of golf opened at Palmilla in 1993
had designed a modest 9-hole Fonatur course — now Vidanta Los Cabos — in San José del Cabo in 1987
But Nicklaus’ Tourist Corridor efforts were world-class
When his Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol premiered in 1994
Golf Digest wasted little time declaring it one of the world’s best
Koll set the standard for golf in Los Cabos: big-name designers crafting spectacular courses in picturesque natural settings
originally announced that Texan Joe Finger — a bilingual designer noted for many fine courses in Mexico — would create 27 holes at his Cabo Real resort and residential development
and that goal was achieved when Nicklaus returned to lay out its 9-hole Ocean Course in 1999
Plenty of golfers have played the Cabo San Lucas Country Club course since it opened in 1994. Developer Ed Reisdorf hired Roy Dye to design what the course, originally called Campo de Carlos. Dye’s son Matt helped, and after Tropical Storm Lidia in 2017, Mexican golf course architect Agustín Piza was brought in to remodel flood-damaged areas
It remains an enjoyable 18-hole course and is affordable by Los Cabos standards
the most exciting new addition during the first decade of the 21st century was undoubtedly Davis Love III’s Dunes Course at Diamante
The links-style layout opened in 2009 and was immediately hailed as a masterpiece
climbing to 36th best in the world by 2017
Diamante developer Ken Jowdy would follow up on this success by bringing in Tiger Woods for his design debut and inspiring a flurry of superb new courses on the Pacific Coast north of Cabo San Lucas
By the time Tiger Woods opened his first restaurant in Los Cabos
he had already designed two golf courses and had a third on the way
brought the PGA-sponsored World Wide Technology Championship to Cabo San Lucas
with the first local event hosted at his El Cardonal course in 2023
It was followed by the 12-hole par-3 Oasis Short Course in 2017
invitation-only Legacy Club development is expected to open its eponymous Tiger Woods course soon
The courses at Diamante were the first of several on the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas, as new layouts from Nicklaus and Norman debuted at Quivira and Solmar Golf Links, respectively. More are coming
including the Ernie Els-designed Oleada course in 2026
Robert Trent Jones Jr. has also returned. After scoring with his early Cabo Real layout, he designed Costa Palmas, the first course on Los Cabos’ picturesque East Cape, in 2020. The second is scheduled to be David McLay Kidd’s Baja Bay Club
although a completion date has yet to be announced for this project

Hotels stand along the shore before the arrival of Tropical Storm Ileana in San Jose de los Cabos
This satellite image taken at 12:40 pm ET on Sept
provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
shows Tropical Storm Ileana at Mexico’s southern tip of the Baja California peninsula
Ileana was centered about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east-northeast of Cabo San Lucas
the center said in a Friday afternoon advisory
Maximum sustained winds were at 40 mph (65 kph)
and Ileana is forecast to move near or over the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula Friday evening and over the southern and central Gulf of California this weekend
A tropical storm warning was in effect for portions of the Baja California Peninsula
Forecasters predicted 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) of rain would fall with Ileana
and up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) was possible for coastal areas of Michoacan
Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in portions of Baja California Sur during the next several hours where Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect
This heavy rainfall will bring a risk of flash flooding and mudslides to portions of western Mexico and southern Baja California
“The entire municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos are already on red alert
This means that efforts are already underway to inform the population
as well as the implementation (of measures) and evacuation to temporary shelters.”
They also urged residents to avoid crossing rivers
and low areas where they can be swept away by water
All schools in Los Cabos were also suspended Friday due to the storm
Óscar Cruces Rodríguez of Mexico’s federal Civil Protection said in a statement that residents should avoid leaving their homes until the storm passes and if residents are in an area at risk of flooding to find temporary shelters
“There’s some flights canceled but everything is ok at the moment.” Galvan said they are awaiting further advisories from authorities
Rain remained consistent through Los Cabos Friday afternoon
We give them the information shared by the authorities — firefighters in risk areas — so that they can go to the shelters if necessary,” she added

It’s easy to date the moment Cabo San Lucas arrived as a nightlife destination. On April 16, 1990, Van Halen, then one of the biggest rock bands in the world, performed live at the club they had jointly opened
television by running a contest in which 10 lucky winners got flown in for the Grand Opening
and showing highlights from the festivities
Meanwhile, a year before this high-profile premiere, two other iconic nightlife spots opened: El Squid Roe and The Giggling Marlin. For the next 30-plus years, until Giggling Marlin was shuttered (at least until further notice) by a fire on June 15, 2024
these three were the titans of the local nightlife scene
But many more great bars and clubs joined the fun over the years
Some are gone now — RIP Love Shack and Cabo Lounge — but many more are still up and long-running
Because here’s the thing: Cabo San Lucas is the only place locally that stays open late
You can find great bars in San José del Cabo
Cabo San Lucas was where the area’s party-hearty reputation was earned and defined
and over the decades it has birthed many a memorable story involving local characters and late-night taco stops
the party has finally shown indications of winding down
Business owners in Cabo San Lucas noticed a negative trend in nightlife sales in 2023
Many reasons for this freefall have been given
most of which fall under the category of “urban image” problems
“Right now the season has fallen again and we do not see any progress,” lamented the coordinator of the non-profit Grupo Madrugadores de Cabo San Lucas, Seth Vázquez Cuevas, in late 2024, per Tribuna de Mexico
“People are afraid to go downtown for many reasons: there is no infrastructure
This point of view is a popularly held one and reflects a sad political reality
Because San José del Cabo is the seat of local government
its downtown has received an amazing makeover in recent years while Cabo San Lucas’ downtown has been allowed to atrophy; aesthetically and in terms of badly needed infrastructure and services
Support from numerous fronts could help rectify what is increasingly a problematic situation and it’s what local business leaders
who are the ones often responsible for local improvements
“The most important point and number one objective is the remodeling of Downtown Cabo San Lucas, with everything that this implies,” noted Gustave Laborde
head of the Los Cabos Business Association
“We know that this is going to be a great effort
But we want to fully involve all the associations
and mainly all the businessmen of El Centro who need to be united and manage to work on a common front that is the remodeling of El Centro.”
there is a rainbow on the immediate horizon in the form of Spring Break
Los Cabos is one of the most popular international destinations for U.S
and Canadian college students during the annual Spring vacation break
over 45,000 students flocked to Los Cabos for Spring Break
and despite the terrible year for Cabo San Lucas nightlife overall
local bars and clubs were packed during March
Much of the 40 million dollars expected to be injected into the Los Cabos economy will go to the hotels charging over $500 per night on average
but nightlife and local restaurants are also expected to reap major benefits
Cabo San Lucas, already projecting a slight uptick (15%–20%) across the nightlife sector in 2025, could do even better courtesy of a strong Spring Break season. With this in mind, beautification efforts are already being ramped up for the students’ arrival during March
the colloquial explanation for the decline of nightlife sales in Cabo San Lucas
are undoubtedly responsible for some of the steep dip experienced
one rooted in a demographic reality: Gen Z doesn’t drink as much as previous generations
That’s a very significant number, and it links Cabo San Lucas to a larger trend that is now apparent across the U.S., where bar sales are also down
As the Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, George F. Koob, pointed out in a recent statement, via Time: “It is becoming clear that for whatever reasons
today’s younger generations are just less interested in alcohol and are more likely than older generations to see it as risky for their health and to participate in periods of abstinence like Dry January.”
So even if Cabo San Lucas can achieve the downtown makeover all of us who live here want to see
there’s no guarantee it’ll be a quick fix for area bars and clubs
So in addition to hoping for a banner Spring Break
I guess we locals will just have to drink more to prop up the economy in the meantime
