Eduardo Alarcon is taking us on a trip to Nuevo Leon
Mexico today to see Las Banderas – an urban sculpture designed by Fernando Gonzalez Gortazar
which translates to “the flags,” serves as the gateway to San Pedro Garza Garcia and is the final piece of San Pedro’s Emblem urban intervention
Eduardo shared that he passes through the sculpture almost every day
which he decided to explore through a personal project
“To my surprise,” he says “I discovered things you can not appreciate passing by in your car
I did the shoot to showcase the scale and proportion of the structure
I wanted to discover and highlight the sculptural aspects of the space and the relationship between the user and the project.”
“The first day of the shoot there was an overcast sky and I was trying out a new camera that is mirrorless
I didn’t hit the optimal focus in some pictures so I had to retake some of them – no biggie
the next day I had some wonderful summer late afternoon light to work with and not-so-busy traffic
It was a little windy but the light conditions were perfect for some good images,” he tells
the greenery and mountains poking out in the distance
I love the inclusion of the street signs below to give some context
The shadows are great and the scene is dynamic
The symmetry in this next frame is fun and almost feels like we are looking at an optical illusion
I love the mountains and clouds perfectly framed by the sculpture here
It’s a great testament to Eduardo’s goal of showing Las Banderas in a way that can’t be seen by car
We see the shapeliness of the structure and its mix of curves and rectilinear elements
Eduardo’s vignettes communicate the many details and forms found throughout the sculpture
“This image was made in a mirrorless camera with a 24mm tilt shift lens and it depicts perfectly the name of the sculpture ‘Las Banderas’ (the flags),” Eduardo explains
“It shows the functional and the formal aspects of the piece in a monumental scale
The challenge with making the image was the backlight that was sorted out by a bracketed exposure and merging them in postproduction
I also had to remove some traffic cones and objects that were in the road.”
Las Banderas at dusk is an equally gorgeous scene
Illuminated intentionally by practical lights as well as by the cars in the road
I appreciate how Eduardo included light trails from the headlights of passing cars
Many thanks to Eduardo for submitting his beautiful personal project in to us
I’m so glad he took the time to explore and share this sculpture
It’s a great reminder to stop and explore the architecture around you
you might find a new and exciting perspective

Mexico — A strong gust of wind toppled the stage at a campaign rally Wednesday evening in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon
killing at least nine people — including a child — and injuring 63
The collapse occurred during an event attended by presidential long-shot candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez
Videos of the collapse on social media showed people screaming
running away and climbing out from under metal polls
The victims "will not be alone in this tragedy," Máynez told reporters Wednesday night
adding that he had suspended upcoming campaign events
police and other officials roamed the grounds of the park where the event took place while many nearby sat stunned and haunted by the tragedy
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he "sends a hug to family members
friends of the victims and political supporters." Condolences poured in from across Mexico
including by other presidential candidates
a leading member of Máynez's Citizens Movement party
asked residents to shelter in their houses for the next two hours
Máynez wrote in his social media accounts that he went to a hospital after the accident in the wealthy suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia
"The only important thing at this point is to care for the victims of the accident," he wrote
Videos of the accident showed Máynez waving his arm as the crowd chanted his name
But then he looked up to see a giant screen and metal structure toppling toward him
He ran rapidly toward the back of the stage to avoid the falling structure
which appeared to consist of relatively light framework pieces as well as what appeared to be a screen with the party's logo and theater-style lights
Máynez has been running third in polls in the presidential race
trailing both front-runner Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling Morena Party and opposition coalition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez
and Sheinbaum canceled a campaign event in nearby Monterrey the next day "in solidarity" with victims and their loved ones
"My condolences and prayers with the families of the dead
and my wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured," wrote Gálvez in a social media post
The accident happened at the height of campaign season
with many events held this week and next in anticipation of the June 2 presidential
The campaign has so far been plagued by the killings of about two dozen candidates for local offices

SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCIA, Mexico (AP) — The collapse of a stage in heavy winds at a campaign rally in northern Mexico has killed at least nine people, including a child, and injured 121, the governor of Nuevo Leon state said Thursday.
The collapse occurred during an event Wednesday evening attended by presidential long-shot candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who ran to escape. Videos of the collapse on social media showed people screaming, running away and climbing out from under metal polls.
The victims “will not be alone in this tragedy,” Máynez told reporters Wednesday night, adding that he had suspended upcoming campaign events.
Afterward, soldiers, police and other officials roamed the grounds of the park where the event took place while many nearby sat stunned and haunted by the tragedy.
In a video message, Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel Garcia, a leading member of Máynez’s Citizens Movement party, said 94 of the injured were treated and released, but that 27 remained hospitalized. State health authorities said a lot of the injuries involved skull fractures. Garcia said several victims were undergoing surgery and some appeared to be in critical condition.
Garcia said the accident occurred “in a matter of seconds.”
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said most of the injured were women. He absolved Máynez’s Citizens Movement party — widely viewed as an implicit ally of López Obrador’s Morena party — of blame even before investigations were carried out.
“We know that they are not to blame,” the president said Thursday. Condolences poured in from across Mexico, including from the other two presidential candidates.
Máynez wrote in his social media accounts that he went to a hospital after the accident in the wealthy suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia, near the city of Monterrey. He said he was in good condition.
“The only important thing at this point is to care for the victims of the accident,” he wrote.
Videos of the accident showed Máynez waving his arm as the crowd chanted his name. But then he looked up to see a giant screen and metal structure toppling toward him. He ran rapidly toward the back of the stage to avoid the falling structure, which appeared to consist of relatively light framework pieces as well as what appeared to be a screen with the party’s logo and theater-style lights.
In a Facebook post, Alejandra Gamez Escalera wrote that her father and a stepbrother, 11, died in the collapse. She said they had gone to the event to hear a band that was scheduled to play at the campaign rally.
“If only you had stayed home and not gone to the event, none of this would have happened,” Gamez Escalera wrote.
“My condolences and prayers with the families of the dead, and my wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured,” wrote Gálvez in a social media post.

The collapse of a stage due to strong wind at a campaign event in the metropolitan area of Monterrey
Nuevo León on Wednesday night killed at least nine people and injured scores of others
Presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez was among the Citizens Movement (MC) party candidates and officials on the concert-style stage when the collapse occurred
— EL PAÍS México (@elpaismexico) May 23, 2024
Nuevo León Governor Samuel García said on social media early Thursday that nine people were killed and 70 others remained in hospital
He said that 11 other people had been discharged from hospital
One of the nine people killed was a child. Media reports identified that victim as an 11-year-old boy who was buried under the collapsed structure. The boy’s father was also reportedly killed
The tragedy occurred at a rally in the affluent municipality of San Pedro Garza García for MC mayoral candidate Lorenia Canavati
Citizens had also traveled to the El Obispo baseball park to listen to a musical group and support other MC candidates in the June 2 elections
The presidential candidate and several others were chanting “Máynez
Máynez” when a powerful gust of wind swept through the stage
causing a large screen emblazoned with the MC logo to lift off
Álvarez Máynez and other candidates and officials reacted quickly
the roof of the stage — including metal lighting trusses — collapsed onto the stage platform and into the crowds of people
Video footage showed numerous people trapped under the lighting trusses
members of the National Guard and citizens worked to free those trapped
State Civil Protection chief Erik Cavazos attributed the collapse of the stage to “atypical wind.”
García advised residents of the Monterrey metropolitan area to stay indoors due to “electrical storms” and “very strong winds.”
Álvarez Máynez said in a video message that the “climatic phenomenon” that caused the stage to collapse wasn’t “foreseeable as has been speculated.”
Referring to the gust of wind that brought the structure down
he said he had “never experienced something so sudden.”
“It is terrible that the people who came to enjoy a day of celebration
are now victims of this tragedy,” Álvarez Máynez told reporters
The candidate’s campaign coordinator Laura Ballesteros was among the injured
The party described the winds that brought the stage down as “hurricane-like.”
Álvarez Máynez and García attended hospitals in the metropolitan area where those injured were being treated
announced he was suspending his planned campaign activities on Thursday
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the other two presidential candidates
took to social media to express their regret over the tragedy and convey condolences to the families of the deceased
Sheinbaum canceled a rally planned for Monterrey on Thursday
Canavati, the San Pedro mayoral candidate, said in a post to the X social media platform that “there are no words to describe the pain and sadness we all feel because of the terrible accident at our campaign event today.”
“At this time the only thing I can think of are the victims and their families,” she wrote

The death toll from the collapse of a stage at a campaign event in Nuevo León on Wednesday remains at nine
but a number of people are still in the hospital

“Thank God there are no more deaths but we have two people hospitalized in serious/stable condition,” he wrote
a total of 192 people were hospitalized after sustaining injuries when the roof of a concert-style stage collapsed due to strong wind at a Citizens Movement (MC) party event on Wednesday night in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García

The governor told a press conference that the state government was also paying the funeral expenses of the deceased
García said that those unable to work due to injuries they sustained will receive 100,000 pesos (US $6,000)
He noted that some of those still in hospital are female heads of households who could remain hospitalized for weeks and subsequently face a period of rehabilitation
transport and other support to families that need it
psychological help will be offered to the 10,000 people who attended the political rally and witnessed the tragedy
The event was organized for Lorenia Canavati
MC’s mayoral candidate in San Pedro and was attended by some of the party’s other candidates

Security forces stand around a stage that collapsed due to a gust of wind during an event attended by presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez in San Pedro Garza García
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that multiple people were killed and at least a dozen were injured
Electoral signs lay on the ground as security forces secure the area after a stage collapsed due to a gust of wind during an event attended by presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez in San Pedro Garza García
Several people were killed and dozens injured
Organizers didn’t cancel an outdoor campaign rally in a suburb of the northern city of Monterrey
leaving the crowd only seconds to react when the stage structure
lighting and a giant screen were blown down
officials in Monterrey said the winds occurred with no warning and that nobody could have predicted them
There wasn’t even a storm forecast for the city,” said Nuevo Leon state Gov
Mexico’s National Weather Service had issued a bulletin at 1:13 p.m
— more than six hours before the collapse — warning of gusts of wind up to 43 mph (70 kph) in the area that “could blow down trees and billboards.” Another bulletin at 6:28 p.m
said outside stages are vulnerable to winds of as little as 35 mph (56 kph)
He said radar and other observations suggest the winds at the Monterrey venue probably reached around 50 mph (80 kph) Wednesday
noting high winds “create special safety risks to elevated stages.”
“This is the type of situation that should not have been a surprise
because these super thunderstorms were approaching and these kinds of thunderstorms are well known to produce gusty winds,” Porter said
“This is another tragic disaster that could have been averted by improved severe weather risk mitigation and situational awareness,” Porter said
the venue can be proactively evacuated and people moved to safe shelter prior to the arrival of gusty winds.”
Porter said his company had been sending special alerts to businesses in the area who subscribe to AccuWeather’s service 35 minutes before the winds arrived in the area
The Citizens Movement party that organized the rally did not immediately respond to questions about why they did not cancel the event or evacuate the crowd beforehand
any hopes the Mexican government might learn from the event were crushed on Thursday
when President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — who is a political ally of the Citizens Movement party — absolved them of any blame
even before an investigation was carried out
“We know that they are not to blame,” the president said Thursday
they were holding a rally during the campaign.”
“People saw very vividly how quickly something can go wrong and how lives can be taken in a matter of seconds.”
the U.S.-based Event Safety Alliance industry trade group was formed to help prevent such tragedies
the vice president of Event Safety Alliance
was that people who are running an outdoor event have to pay better attention to meteorology
Adelman said the best practice if a storm is approaching — if there is time — is to lower heavy objects like speakers and screens down from the stage
because they can contribute to strains on the structure
But the primary step is to get people away from the stage
“You may not be able to protect the structure
It is not clear if Mexican officials have yet learned those lessons
Mexico after strong wind gusts caused a portion of the stage to collapse at a campaign event

who are used to forking out hefty sums every month for their apartments
Polanco Chapultepec was the capital’s most expensive neighborhood at 22,822 pesos ($1,144)
a trend that was reflected in Mexico City’s four other most expensive neighborhoods
Polanco Chapultepec still remains the priciest neighborhood to rent in Mexico City
followed by Los Morales Sección Alameda and Polanco Reforma
All three neighborhoods are in Miguel Hidalgo where some of the most expensive properties can cost as much as 110,000 pesos ($5,420) per month
The site also reported that in Jardines del Pedregal de San Ángel in Coyoacán
some owners charge as much as 125,000 pesos ($6,158) for a month’s rent
Jalisco and Querétaro both offer more affordable upscale areas
Residencial Virreyes in Zapopan Sureste tops the list at 16,948 pesos ($835) on average
Fraccionamiento Lomas del Marques in Cayetano Rubio is the most expensive area at an average 13,999 pesos ($690)
not all neighborhoods threaten to leave renters out of pocket
There are five where apartments are available for less than 7,000 pesos
according to the property sites Segunda Mano and Propiedades.com
Those neighborhoods are Romero Rubio in Venustiano Carranza
San Miguel Topilejo in Tlalpan and Apatlaco in Iztapalapa

An increasing number of Mexicans feel safe in their day-to-day lives, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)
The quarterly National Survey of Urban Public Safety polls people’s perception of public safety in their home city
their feelings of insecurity and expectations about crime trends
and their trust in the public administration
The survey focused on urban environments and polled residents of 75 cities across the country
62.1% of the adult population in Mexico felt unsafe in their local area
That figure is almost 2.5 points lower than that registered in October 2022, when the survey found that citizens’ perception of insecurity where they live had reached its lowest level in a decade (64.4%)
Even amidst a rising number of homicides in the country — almost 31,000 in 2022 — the public sense of safety has continued to improve
The perception of insecurity is higher for women
with 68.1% of adult females in Mexico feeling unsafe in their home cities compared to 54.8% of men
The cities in which people felt most unsafe were Fresnillo (96%) and Zacatecas city
a México state city on the edge of the capital (88%)
the city where people felt least unsafe (18.3%) was San Pedro Garza García
The borough of Benito Juárez in Mexico City came second (19.4%)
perceptions of how insecurity affects the tourism industry have also improved over the last decade
According to data from a survey conducted by Anáhuac University in Mexico City
the industry’s perception of the impact of insecurity on their business improved markedly
between 50% and 70% of those surveyed felt insecurity “greatly affected” the industry
versus just 24% in the last four-month period of 2022
The majority of remaining respondents still concluded that insecurity does affect the industry
During the Easter holidays, the federal government deployed more than 8,000 members of the National Guard to Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations to reinforce security
Nuevo León state police assumed responsibility for policing duties in Mexico’s wealthiest municipality Saturday after a request for help from the mayor
State Secretary General Manuel González said the state police takeover of San Pedro Garza García
followed a request for assistance from Mayor Miguel Treviño de Hoyos
He explained that the state will remain in charge of security while municipal officers are subjected to control and confidence testing
that will be published says that [the takeover] is temporary
The reality is that we think that it’s going to take about a month
to carry out an analysis of the control and confidence tests
We will seek to do it faster in order to be able to return to normality soon,” González said
“We think that it’s a very healthy attitude on the part of the mayor; for him to decide to [ask us] to come to help
the condition of the police force,” he added
Treviño thanked the state government for its prompt response
He said his request followed a preliminary analysis of the municipal police force carried out in the months since he was sworn in as mayor at the end of October
allowed us “to arrive at the conclusion that it was pertinent to ask the state [government] to support us in checking that the entire force is clean.”
who won last year’s election as an independent candidate
said the decision to ask for assistance wasn’t related to incidents of violence in recent days
Nuevo León Public Security Secretary Aldo Fasci Zuazua said the army will also collaborate with state police to carry out security duties in San Pedro Garza García while the confidence tests are applied
former mayor Mauricio Fernández Garza defended the performance of the municipal police force during his three-year administration from 2015 to 2018
He said that in October, the month he left office, San Pedro Garza García was ranked by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) as having the lowest perception of insecurity among residents of all municipalities in Mexico
The effort of the major [former San Pedro security secretary Antonio Lucas Martínez] in controlling the [municipal] force and in coordinating with the military was extraordinary
He was recognized by civil associations for the extraordinary results,” Fernández said
feel and believe” about security in the municipality
gave San Pedro Garza García the best security perception results in Mexico’s history
In addition to being the country’s wealthiest municipality with a per-capita GDP of more than US $25,000, San Pedro Garza García was last year deemed Mexico’s most livable city in a survey conducted by polling firm Gabinete de Comunicación Estratégica

The three best cities in which to live in Mexico are San Pedro Garza García
Conducted by polling firm Gabinete de Comunicación Estratégica
Mexico’s Most Livable Cities surveyed residents of the 76 largest cities in the country including the 16 boroughs of Mexico City
Their responses were used to generate ratings for each city in four different areas: quality of life
satisfaction with municipal services and performance of mayors
part of the metropolitan area of Monterrey
came out on top in each of the first three while Colima residents thought most highly of their mayor
San Pedro received a combined score of 61.7 to rank as the best city in Mexico
Mérida followed just ahead of Sin Nicolás de los Garza
Nuevo León; Chihuahua; Aguascalientes; and Mexicali
Venustiano Carranza was found to be the most livable borough in Mexico City
México state – a municipality in the Mexico City metropolitan area notorious for violence – was ranked the least livable city in the country ahead of Tehuacán
and Puebla ranked as the fourth and fifth least livable cities
The study also ranked six different regions of the country in terms of livability
The northern region was the best place to live followed by western Mexico
the director general of Gabinete de Comunicación Estratégica
noted that there is a wide divide between Mexico’s most and least livable cities
Life in San Pedro Garza García is “completely different” to life in Ecatepec
Berrueto also noted that residents’ ratings of three northern border cities – Ciudad Juárez
Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa – fell this year compared to 2018
The “deterioration” is “not necessarily associated with the quality of government,” he said
adding that the influx of migrants “seriously compromises the quality of life in those cities.”
Insecurity and poor municipal services were significant factors in the low rankings of many municipalities in the greater Mexico City area
Here is the full list of the 76 cities surveyed:

Text description provided by the architects. Makerspace can be found at UDEM high school (San Pedro campus). Usually, these types of buildings consist of a collaborative environment where students have access to resources, knowledge, tools, and materials that are shared to work on their projects. It’s a space for designing, creating, and modifying objects.
We seek to achieve a transparent building that allows a view of its interior. The goal is to show the whole process, from learning to use each tool, conceptualizing parts, and materializing them. Makerspace transforms this way to become a display for those who walk through the high school’s public spaces.

The Mexican millionaire and art collector Mauricio Fernández Garza has great plans for his collection of art and historical artifacts
Garza is building a museum to house these treasures
so that the public can enjoy them as much as he does
While many support the new museum, there are those who take issue with the fact that public funds are being used to house personal belongings, and that the decision to build the structure was made while Fernández Garza was a sitting mayor.
For a time, Treviño’s administration completely halted the project, until Fernández Garza offered up sections of his mansion for use in the museum replica, including four ceilings from the 14th and 16th centuries that Fernández Garza claims are worth $50m.
“The discussion ended when we donated the ceilings, it was no longer a project to build something for my pieces, it is municipal heritage, I have no interest in using the municipality’s money for something of my own,” Fernández Garza told the AP.
