A decades-old territorial dispute has flared up in the city of Puerto Escondido
the main arterial route on the state’s coast
As with most of the state’s disputes over land — and there are hundreds
the protagonists are two neighboring municipalities fighting over land
in this case the jewel in the crown that is Puerto Escondido
the mayor of Santa María Colotepec issued a declaration of war and installed a protest camp on Highway 200 at the city’s chief intersection
“We are not going to give up even a centimeter of our land [and] we’re not going to allow the continuing harassment on the part of [San Pedro] Mixtepec … from here we say to the state government and the agrarian court that we don’t want rulings that have been paid for that put at risk the stability of the port,” declared Carmelo Cruz Mendoza according to a report by the newspaper El Imparcial
The mayor warned that the blockade would remain until Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa and agrarian officials hear their concerns
their counterparts in Mixtepec have “cunningly” engaged in attempting to influence agrarian officials in favor of the latter municipality
a process that began when lawyers for Mixtepec presented a constitutional argument before the agrarian court in 2018
Colotepec officials accused both agrarian and state officials of colluding with “the criminal” Fredy Gil
The highway blockade remained in place Saturday afternoon but there was a report that Governor Murat had arrived in the city to address the situation

A highway in Oaxaca that will slash travel times between Oaxaca city and southern state’s Pacific coast is nearing completion after 20 years of delays and failed attempts
Governor Alejandro Murat said the 102.4 kilometer Oaxaca-Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway was 80.2% finished and that work was continuing between Barranca Larga and Ventanilla
the highway is set to link the state capital to the popular tourist destination of Puerto Escondido
cutting travel times from six to 2 1/2 hours
The two lane highway will have a hard shoulder
Murat, who was supervising construction, said that four sections were still being worked on: one section is at 94.6% completion and another is at 87.7%. However, Murat added two other sections remain further from completion, at 67.8% and 64.6%. In April 2021, Murat predicted the highway would be completed on March 21 of this year
Murat said that work and conciliation groups would be set up with communities negatively impacted by the construction to “search for a solution to their social and infrastructural demands.”
Land disputes have marred progress on the highway: there have been deadly flare ups between the communities of Sola de Vega and San Vicente Coatlán over a long running dispute
which the newspaper Reforma previously reported has taken more than 50 lives over about 60 years
The highway crosses the municipalities of Ejutla de Crespo
San Sebastián Coatlán and Santa María Colotepec
Murat supervised construction of a bridge in Colotepec and the San Sebastián tunnel
The government will be looking forward to the once unlikely completion of the highway

The federal government closed all Mexico’s beaches in early April to prevent people from gathering in groups and further spreading the coronavirus
Since then there have been a number of observations of wildlife reclaiming spaces they previously avoided due to human presence
Fishermen and Civil Protection agents from nearby Santa María Colotepec captured a crocodile in a lagoon adjacent to the popular tourist and surfer destination Puerto Escondido in March
The animal was released in wetlands south of that city
There have also been reports of jaguars and leatherback sea turtles re-entering spaces in Cancún from which human activity had kept them away for decades
In Oaxaca, crocodiles occasionally enter spaces normally occupied by people. A fisherman was attacked by a crocodile while taking a nap on the Boca Barra beach
Similar incidents in the lagoons west of Puerto Escondido led the federal environmental protection agency Profepa to carry out a census of the animal’s numbers in the Manialtepec and Chacahua lagoons before the Covid-19 pandemic stopped normal life in its tracks
which was suspended due to a lack of resources
aimed to find better ways to protect both humans and crocodiles
as people have encroached more and more into the animal’s habitat in recent years
