Whether you are looking for a boutique stay with a spa or a coastal resort with pools and restaurants St Julian’s has a hotel for every type of traveller I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice A series of bays that once bobbed with traditional fishing boats (a handful remain), St Julian’s became the place for wealthy 19th- and early 20th-century Maltese to build their Neoclassical seaside villas. A few can still be seen here – one houses the Villa restaurants in front of the Malta Marriott hotel another the Dragonara Casino – but they have been subsumed into the later 20th- and 21st-century tourist industry that now dominates the area from intimate boutiques to sprawling resorts this fun boutique hotel is just metres from the seafront of Balluta Bay The hotel has been colourfully decked out with a light-touch sense of humour – a giant’s chair in reception red-and-white striped seaside awnings over large comfortable beds There’s a surprisingly spacious and well-equipped spa with an Word View Author Profile Follow on Twitter at @shannonkayevans Editor's note: This article has been adapted from The Mystics Would Like a Word (Convergent Books I'll admit it: History has never been my strong suit medieval saints just never carried much weight with me Maybe it's because of the way female saints are offered to Catholic women as role models: always presented as docile and meek women who can teach us about speaking in humility but not about speaking truth to power It's hard to relate to someone you can't see yourself reflected in — and might not even want to when I found myself disillusioned with modern Christian leadership and searching for guides on a more ancient path Once I dipped my toes into the waters of the female mystics I realized this was the pool I'd been looking for all along speaking for themselves in their own books I realized that the traditional presentation of the female saints and mystics had historically been funneled through and crafted for the male gaze I realized that in my snobbery of assuming they had nothing to teach me I was complicit in our collective reduction of who these women were and what they had to say these women are the furthest thing from one-dimensional As my spiritual love affair with these women evolved I found myself shocked at how progressive their musings were and how timely they feel at this particular moment in history How does mental illness inform our spiritual experience I began to do what we writers always do: I put my findings into words Starting with Teresa of Avila, then Julian of Norwich, then Hildegard of Bingen, Margery Kempe, Catherine of Siena, and finally, after some resistance, Thérèse of Lisieux, I studied the books of six of the most noteworthy Catholic female mystics in history and crafted explanations of their impact on me into a book of my own, titling it The Mystics Would Like a Word Teresa of Avila taught me about trusting one's inner light as well as about the interconnection between sexuality and spirituality Margery Kempe taught me that mental illness has the dignity of prophetic vision as well as about the importance of self-belonging Hildegard of Bingen taught me that environmental justice relies on spirituality as well as the necessity of art-making in a broken world.  Five out of the six featured in this book were avowed religious their vocation was not because they were docile but precisely because they weren't I learned that convents were historically life rafts for women who eschewed the dutiful existence of marriage and motherhood — not to mention the high probability of death through childbirth a woman could retain her agency and bodily autonomy She could devote herself to her theological passions It is no coincidence that some of the strongest female voices in history have been those of professed religious sisters which is still true in the Catholic Church today The only laywoman in this book is Margery Kempe a mother of 14 who wrestled mightily with the tension between her vocation as wife and mother and her spiritual calling to prayer and teaching As interest in feminine spirituality is piqued around the world water down) the guides we've already been given Julian of Norwich taught me of an invitation to relate to God as Mother as well as to prioritize love over ideas of sin and hell Thérèse of Lisieux taught me that insignificance is subversive as well as how to acknowledge and comfort one's inner child Catherine of Siena taught me to balance action with contemplation as well as the necessity of facing our fears and shadows There is a reason the writings of these women have stood the test of time and reverberated across centuries May we have the maturity to recognize the timelessness of their wisdom even as we build on and expand it so many years later we too can be mystics; for a mystic is really just someone who has experienced a glimpse of the eternal and has devoted themselves to pursuing glimmer of light The ghostly apparition is actually a little flat high in the tower that was occupied by the current church custodian Andrew Wright and his wife Lexie a bustling market of makers and traders which closed in 2001; the artisanal spirit of Shrewsbury goes back a long way in the former vestry is the popular La Lanterna Restaurant a wonderfully quirky and atmospheric eatery the church has been used intermittently for services by the Greek Orthodox Church of the 318 Holy Fathers Shrewsbury whose congregation has outgrown the tiny historic church in Sutton Andrew is pleased that the House of God is once again providing a sacred home for believers (he’s a deeply spiritual chap himself and believes in Divine purpose) and is planning to ultimately gift them the grade II-listed church in three years’ time Fish Street in Shrewsbury: Credit Shropshire and Beyond “I am very happy to give the church to them - I know whatever they do will be both successful and beautiful because the Lord is with them,” he says they could not repay me for the outlay of the past 45 years.” Andrew still has a few plans for the church He has also promised the owner of La Lanterna that he can continue to operate the popular restaurant and then sell it with a proper lease whenever he wants: “That would be the proviso under which I would be prepared to hand the church over,” he says “I believe it is a fundamental criterion in any business to keep faith with those who have kept faith with me.” Andrew is a truly remarkable chap - a puzzling anomaly and defies categorisation: a colourful ex hippie with a huge heart; a reluctant businessman of sorts; former Chair of the Shrewsbury Chamber of Commerce; autodidact historian and bibliophile with over 22,000 books in his personal collection; a talented linguist with the touch of a curate about him He once kept an orphaned goat ‘Sophie’ up on the tower feeding her with hay (pasturage-with-a-view!) “Rather than leave her to starve in the field I fed her until she became a liability and then took her back to join the others,” Andrew explains The tale has entered local folklore and is enjoyed by tourists on tours led by Town Crier Martin Wood: “Passers-by on Fish Street were astonished to hear ‘maa’ ‘maa’ Sophie the goat on a gravestone in the churchyard conversation can head off on unexpected tacks We touched on for his local histories The move to Shrewsbury found him running Lord Rama wholefood shop in Fish Street building strong connections within the business community supporting traders and throwing himself wholeheartedly into the life of the town; he even did a stint as the President of the Chamber of Commerce which seems vaguely incongruous for such a free spirit: “I used to visit every shop in Shrewsbury,” he said “I considered our independent shops a hidden treasure.” The interior of St Julian's as it looks today - the church is currently in use by the Greek Orthodox Church Cited as ‘St Juliana’ in the Domesday book it has been known as St Julian’s since the 13th century now a private rental) dates from the 12th century The current nave was designed by architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard who was himself baptized in the church in 1723 and would go on to design Shrewsbury foundling hospital (now Shrewsbury School) and the famous iron bridge at Coalbrookdale Andrew explains the church became redundant in 1976 when it was deemed a ‘white elephant’ by the Borough Council and put on the market He spotted a local press article about it and decided it would make a great venue for a crafts centre He funded the purchase by selling his shop: “I bought it with a loan and lived on £2 per week for two years to pay the loan back I quite honestly forget the actual purchase price but the transformation cost more and the maintenance over 45 years much more!” The church commissioners loved the idea and Andrew managed to secure planning permission for change of use for the new centre plus an apartment in the old bell tower with views over the Clee Hills block and tackles were safely reinstalled below the tower where they are still in working order today (Andrew gave me a demo) It was a lengthy and complex process; all the fittings for Andrew’s new home were lifted into the tower using the block and tackle in the bell tower and the building waste lowered using the same block and tackles were safely reinstalled below the tower during the transformation of St Julian's The oak backs from the old pews were transformed into 10 new craft studios and the old organ case became a picture framing studio The new Craft Centre opened in 1980 with a final ring of the old bells (Andrew still has a recording of this historic event) It was a popular home for artisans for 20 years and even served as a film set masquerading as the interior of the Corn Exchange for the filming of the 1984 movie ‘A Christmas Carol’ (the old Royal Salop Infirmary - now the Parade Shopping Centre - was used for the exterior shots) Andrew had to completely empty out the church before film crews arrived storing everything under a tarpaulin in the graveyard: “It was a massive removal,” he said “The crew required the building for two weeks in order to film two minutes!” He was asked to be an extra in a scene with Hollywood star George C Scott (although it didn’t make the final cut): “I had the opportunity to chat to him at length He told me he wasn’t a sociable man and preferred to keep apart from the rest of the cast.” A selection of craftspeople outside St Julian's in the 1990s Kim Downes and George C Scott during the filming of A Christmas Carol at St Julian's a mishap with two large transformers saw the entire church filled with black smoke and everyone ushered outside: “I thought ‘am I about to lose my 1,000 year old building?” Andrew recalls “When the smoke had cleared I was given a little air can to puff all the black cinders that had fallen on all the craft studios Not only had he significantly undercharged for allowing crews to use the church for filming he was also left with serious smoke damage which meant he had to fork out to have the whole church scaffolded and repainted (it’s still in remarkably good order today) He never even thought to ask for compensation: “One of my faults is a total naiveté concerning money,” he says “Together with the huge cost of maintaining and heating the building it is amazing that I have been able to maintain the church and am still doing so 40 years later…The Lord has always provided.”  The church narrowly survived an earthquake in 1990 it was one of the largest ever in the UK and Shropshire took the brunt Tremors cracked the finial on the east end of the roof of St Julian’s and split it into three parts: “I was pictured hanging onto the remaining two segments whilst awaiting aftershocks whilst the police had directed pedestrians to walk directly beneath the scarily dangerous finials,” Andrew says All that needed to be rebuilt at great costs an influx of water above the sanctuary necessitated a major re-plastering job Installing solar panels caused yet more water ingress Shrewsbury's own Quasimodo - Andrew Wright carries out repairs on the roof of St Julian's Shrewsbury’s own Quasimodo has clearly enjoyed clinging to the rafters up on his tower these past four decades: “The number of times I’ve had to go up onto that roof and remove the panels and repair leaks I enjoyed erecting scaffolding and climbing up illegal heights to help repair things.” It’s clear he’s been a diligent owner; he erected wire mesh over the windows to safeguard them from vandals he’s installed secondary glazing to conserve heat and an entirely new heating system: “We can’t afford to run the heaters at full tilt because of the price of oil and our meagre income largely from the modest rent from the restaurant “The tower is inhabited by someone who needs a home but cannot afford it and so Andrew answers the one question I have been dying to ask: “Why then have you done this?” He explains: “From the moment the Craft Centre was closed the Lord had clearly indicated to my wife that His House would be a House of Prayer for all Nations and that the latter glory of the House would be greater than the former We clung to those words through good times and bad.”  the church was used by the Shrewsbury Evangelical Church and for various events and community gatherings It’s clear the past decade has been testing for Andrew as he waited for God’s purpose to reveal itself: “I grew very depressed,” he reveals “So many people suggested all kinds of uses for the building and I thanked them but I knew I was not meant to find a new use Father Stephen Maxfield and Chanter Hector Panos with the newest members of the congregation outside St Julian’s the answer revealed itself: “The Lord brought the Greek Orthodox church who number 150 and are growing exponentially led by the most lovely people imaginable,” Andrew explained The Greek Orthodox midnight Easter ceremony of Pascha this year saw Andrew and Lexie join 450 people of 12 different nationalities from all over the Midlands inside St Julian’s and then descend the front steps to the High Street each carrying a candle to celebrate Easter morning: “A house of prayer for all nations indeed,” says Andrew “It is because the Lord has so clearly fulfilled His promises and demonstrated His purposes that I intend to give them the church so that they may do whatever they want to do and I know whatever they do will be both successful and beautiful because He is with them…To me it is both astonishing and wonderful and I could never have imagined such a thing nor such wonderful people.” Latest | What's On | Food & Drink | Arts & Patrick’s Day festivities Vendors had begun lining the streets in the morning with a few brave partygoers showing up early in the day to open the celebrations But the atmosphere picked up by the afternoon with Spinola Bay becoming more crowded by the hour The streets of St Julian's became more crowded by the hour leprechaun hats and Irish flags packing the streets commuters took to social media to bemoan the ensuing traffic chaos “Dingli Street (Sliema) to Gżira ferries over an hour,” one person said pointing to how ongoing roadworks in the area have exacerbated the gridlock And some disgruntled Sliema residents took to suggesting new venues for the celebrations saying future editions should be moved to Ta' Qali or the Luxol football ground the Sliema local council issued a statement to express its "serious concerns" over what it described as "uncoordinated diversions in preparation for the St "At no stage was the Sliema Local Council consulted by either the St Julian’s Police Station regarding the decision to divert large volumes of traffic through Sliema," the statement said And health minister Jo Etienne Abela pitched in taking to Facebook to warn against excessive drinking and drug use during celebrations “Spend your evening with your loved ones not with us here in hospital,” he said Members of Malta’s Turkish community took to the streets Sunday in protest against their homecountry’s leadership The protest follows similar action in Valletta last weekend in response to the contentious arrest of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main opposition rival on graft charges Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested just days before he was due to formally be declared a candidate to oppose Erdogan in elections in 2028 European governments have called the actions of Turkey’s leadership “unacceptable” and a "serious attack on democracy" Protesters told Times of Malta "we want our country back" Protesters in St Julian’s gathered at the locality’s ‘love sign’ monument holding placards reading 'freedom for detained and arrested students' and 'hope and resistance'.  Others held up the country's flag while the crowd sang along to Turkish songs played from a speaker told Times of Malta protestors were "fed up" with Erdogan's rule and said they "don't want a dictatorship anymore".  a financial worker who has lived in Malta for three years said "[Turkey] was once a country with separation of powers; now [Erdogan] holds all the power.. we don't know if we can say we are a democracy" Members of Malta's community marched from St Julian's to Sliema she stressed those were "just from this year;  [the government] was arresting people all the time" who represents the Workers' Party of Turkey in Malta A passing motorcyclist beeped his horn in time with the protesters' chants while later a small group of friends standing outside a nearby apartment block clapped as the crowd passed by Not everyone on the protesters' route appeared supportive three women standing on a nearby elevated balcony chanted Erdogan's name at the protesters.  The crowd met the president's name with cries of: "We stand together against fascism who has lived in Malta for five years but said he left Turkey a decade ago to escape the regime stressed that with millions of Turks living in Europe Sunday's protest drew attendees of different ages Erdogan has ruled Turkey for more than 20 years occupying the roles of both prime minister and president While he has been credited with helping to modernise the country he has also been accused of becoming increasingly autocratic and chipping away at the secular principles of the republic as established by its founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Erdogan’s administration confirmed a Swedish journalist had been detained on arrival in Turkey to cover the protests on terror-related charges and for "insulting the president" that many protesters had been arrested at their homes in pre-dawn raids after being identified at protests by facial recognition software Malta’s popular entertainment mecca St Julian’s transforms each summer into one of Europe’s most densely populated areas with its effective population skyrocketing by a staggering 129% during August’s peak tourism season New data from the National Statistics Office reveals that St Julian’s resident population of 13,518 ballooned to 30,935 in August 2023 pushing population density to over 19,000 persons per square kilometre more than double its off-peak density of approximately 8,400 persons per square kilometre This dramatic seasonal fluctuation highlights the growing phenomenon of “tourism intensity” across Malta where the strain on infrastructure becomes increasingly apparent as tourists flood popular localities during summer months Paul’s Bay experience similar transformations Sliema saw its population surge from 21,465 to 33,877 resulting in a peak density approaching 26,000 persons per square kilometre already Malta’s most populous locality accommodated an additional 15,000 people during August raising serious questions about the sustainability of the island’s tourism growth strategies Tourism intensity measures how tourism swells a locality’s population beyond its residential base When a locality’s effective population doubles or triples during peak season the practical implications become unmistakable The figures are particularly concerning when viewed in the context of Malta’s overall population density Already ranked as the eighth most densely populated country globally with 1,704 persons per square kilometre Malta’s effective population density reaches 1,882 persons per square kilometre when tourists are included Malta’s mid-year population of 552,734 swelled to over 628,000 This means the country effectively hosted an additional 65,000 people during the peak tourism month concentrated primarily in coastal areas and heritage sites demographic pressures continue building from other sources Government figures indicate that over 33,000 residence permits were issued to foreign workers in 2024 alone with foreign nationals now constituting 28.1% of Malta’s total population Urban planners and local councils are increasingly using tourism intensity data to assess the sustainability of tourism development Localities with consistently high figures require better waste collection and increased policing during summer months August experienced the highest tourism intensity at 13.6 This disparity corresponds to a 664.2% increase (65,467 tourists) in the tourist population between the months of lowest and highest intensity The seasonality of these population swings presents unique challenges Julian’s see their effective population density in December fall to 11,857 persons per square kilometre a dramatic shift that complicates infrastructure planning The contrast is even more pronounced in areas like Mellieħa where tourism population increased by 295.1% between December and August 2023 the highest percentage increase among popular localities St Julian’s saw the most significant rise in tourism intensity followed by Mellieħa (49.9 increase) and Sliema (41.6 increase) St Julian’s recorded the largest growth in tourist population (11,858 tourists) followed by St Paul’s Bay (11,620 tourists) and Sliema (8,934 tourists) followed by St Paul’s Bay (288.2%) and Sliema (256.9%) High densities strain water and energy supplies making housing increasingly unaffordable for locals Valletta presents a particularly concerning trend While its resident population declined by 2.2% between 2016 and 2023 This resulted in the capital city having the second-highest tourism intensity in Malta at 76.6 during August 2023 A 76 year old man lost his life while swimming in the sea in St Julian’s The Police said that it was called to assist at Fishermen’s Wharf at 12.40pm TVMnews is informed that the corpse was spotted on the water’s surface near the Cavalieri Hotel was lifted out of the water by Members of Civil Protection and of the AFM and was certified dead at the scene by a medical team Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia was informed of the case and appointed an inquiry while the Police are investigating the case have been arraigned in Court and charged with possession and trafficking of cocaine and cannabis Sakariye Abdirahman Hassan and Muktar Yusuf Abdilani have been charged with committing these crimes in St Julian’s near an entertainment establishment They both pleaded guilty and the Court condemned Hassan to a twelve month prison sentence and a €500 fine together with the sum of €100 from the personal guarantee imposed on him in a separate sentence Muktar Yusuf Abdilani was also sentenced to 10 months in jail and fined €500 The Court said that the fines can be paid within two years from the date when the offenders served the prison sentence imposed today and in the case of Hassan from the date when he ceases to be detained at the Corradino Correctional Facility An elderly Irish tourist died on Tuesday after being found unresponsive in the waters of St Julian’s bay The 76-year-old man’s body was spotted floating near the Cavalieri Hotel just before 1pm he went swimming and shortly afterwards found himself in difficulty Members of the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta recovered him from the sea Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia is leading an inquiry A tourist died off St Julian's on Tuesday after finding himself in difficulty while swimming was seen floating in the water at Xatt is-Sajjieda just off the Cavalieri Hotel in St Julian's Bay at about 12.45pm.  Emergency services rushed to the site to recover the body from the water after witnesses called for help He was assisted on shore but died shortly afterwards.  The police are investigating and a magisterial inquiry has been opened.  Strong winds lashed Malta on Tuesday morning though the
