The sheriff's office received a number of calls Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. regarding burglary complaints and a suspicious person. Deputies and investigators arrived in the area and learned the suspect may be 32-year-old Carlos Garza of Eden Valley. Authorities say Garza was seen leaving a home in a vehicle and heading toward Melrose. A deputy followed and made a traffic stop. The sheriff's office says Garza was informed he was being detained related to a burglary but instead drove away and sped toward downtown. The deputy called off the pursuit due to the dangerous situation. The sheriff's office says Garza tried to turn onto Main Street from westbound County Road 13, lost control, crashed into a pole and building then fled on foot. A police dog was called in and alerted officers to a box truck. After refusing to come out, deputies deployed chemical irritants into the truck. Garza came out and was arrested without further incident. He faces several felony charges in the case. crossings from Mexico fell 14 percent in October from a month earlier ending a three-month streak of big increases U.S. officials highlighted the resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela on Oct shortly after Venezuelans replaced Mexicans as the largest nationality appearing at the border Arrests of Venezuelans plummeted 45 percent to 29,637 from 54,833 Arrests for illegal crossings totaled 188,778 for all nationalities in October which was the second-highest month on record Arrests had more than doubled over the previous three months as migrants and smugglers adjusted to new asylum regulations introduced in May with 99 percent of them in the San Diego area as more fly to Ecuador and make their way to the U.S “We continue to enhance our border security posture and remain vigilant,” said Troy Miller who urged Congress to approve President Joe Biden’s supplemental budget request for $13.6 billion in border-related spending WATCH: Why thousands of migrants are being detained by the U.S. as witnesses the monthly decline is a rare piece of welcome news for a White House that has been criticized on the right and left flanks for its immigration policies Panama has yet to release October figures for crossings through the notorious Darién jungle which totaled more than 400,000 during the first nine months of the year has adopted an approach at the border that combines new legal pathways to enter the country with more restrictions on asylum for those who cross the border illegally migrants crossed the border 240,988 times in October More than 44,000 people entered from Mexico with appointments on the CBP One mobile app bringing the total number of scheduled appointments on the app to 324,000 since it was introduced in January Nicaragua and Venezuela crime of sudden passion by a man attacking his ex-wife’s lover The Lubbock singer was shot three times in the back then fell to the ground facing his attacker who shot him one last time in the genitals who was one of eight witnesses called on by the state Wednesday with prosecutors arguing Garza’s killing was an act of premeditated murder Wednesday was the third day of Pete Garcia’s murder trial in the 364th District Court He faces a punishment of five years to life in prison a sudden passion finding by the jury in the punishment phase of the trial could decrease the punishment range to two to 20 years in prison Witnesses told jurors on Tuesday they saw an unidentified man walk up to Garza at the St Elizabeth’s Catholic Church parking lot and shoot him in the back and once more when he was on the ground before running away Natarajan was called to help guide jurors through the autopsy process in Garza’s homicide which included a presentation of photos of his injuries Natarajan told jurors one of the bullets that struck Garza in the back damaged his spinal cord and likely caused him to fall on the ground Photos of the crime scene showed a small pooling of blood on the seam of a concrete slab on a sidewalk by the parking lot Natarajan said he believed the clothing Garza wore that day soaked up a lot of blood and the EMTs’ quick response in taking him to University Medical Center explained why there was so little blood on the scene Natarajan also documented efforts by physicians at the hospital to save Garza Prosecutors also called on Nicholas Weaver where records show Garcia bought a handgun about two weeks before the shooting Weaver said Garcia applied for the gun on Jan and returned to the store five days later to pick up the weapon Weaver said Garcia went through an FBI background check despite having an active protective order being filed against him in a Hockley County court Records show Garcia was served protective orders in November and December prohibiting him from contacting Garza or his ex-wife Jurors also heard the call Garcia made to a Levelland dispatcher asking to be picked up for shooting Garza The trial is scheduled to
