MISHAWAKA — When talking about a neighborhood restaurant, Felix Martinez can fill you in on what it means to Tampico's Mexican Grill
Seeking out a place in 2018 to locate a restaurant with his co-owner, Bernardo Cazares, Martinez says the former Maury's Pat's Pub at 901 W
a few businesses tried the location but failed
"There were two or three businesses (in the building) before us," Martinez said
'We'll give you six months,' but we are still here," he says with a laugh
Martinez believes it's the food the two men produce
"All the people said they needed someplace like that," he says
"The neighborhood said that they needed a Mexican place close to them."
Cazares said when the two began seting up the menu
they heard loud and clear from customers that said they wanted authentic fare
'We do not come to a Mexican restaurant to eat American food — we want authentic Mexican food,'" Cezares said
the La Tampiquena offers a marinated steak with two enchiladas with salsa
cheese with choice of flour or corn tortillas
Previous Taste: Tampico's Mexican Grill brings flavors of border and coast to Mishawaka
A full bar offers margaritas and a host of specialty cocktails as well as Mexican beer and wines
Martinez says the drinks can enhance the pairings with the food
The bar that was in the former pub was removed from the building to place more tables in the establishment to seat more customers
loud scenes and colors — so much so that each booth is a new visual experience
Both owners credit carry-outs for saving the business during the pandemic that shut down indoor dining in the spring of 2020
they would come two or three times a day," Martinez said
Cezares said they did better business in those months because of the orders to go
and the restaurant appreciated the neighborhood support during those times
And the restaurant has been consistent with the food and the staffing
Martinez says that when a new chef applies to work at Tampico's
he is taught the restaurant's flavor profiles and the ways they prepare
rather than having the chef change the menus
from the sauces to the salsa," Martinez says
The owners say that although the local neighborhood supports the place
Goshen and other areas as people tell their friends
Martinez says he sometimes is fearful when fellow countrymen and women eat there
We wait for them to say something," Martinez says
He said he remembers cooking tamales for children
which brings back his own family memories of having his grandmother's tamales
There are no big future plans on the horizon
but Martinez and Cazares say they could possibly expand to another restaurant in the future
a lot of people still don't know we are here

Canadian 19-year-old Marina Stakusic notched the biggest title of her young career on Saturday at the WTA 125 Abierto Tampico in Tampico, Mexico.
A qualifier into the main draw, Stakusic upset No.5 seed Anna Blinkova 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a grueling hard-court final to clinch her first WTA 125 trophy. Stakusic fought back from a third-set deficit before attaining victory after 2 hours and 43 minutes of play.
World No.140 Stakusic was down a break as late as 4-3 in the final set, but she broke former Top 35 player Blinkova at love to reach parity at 4-4. Stakusic then saved four break points in a tense hold for 5-4 before breaking Blinkova again for the win.
This week, Stakusic garnered seven wins (including two in qualifying), and she had to battle through the latter stages of the event. Stakusic was pushed into a 7-5 third set by Lucrezia Stefanini in the quarterfinals, and she eked out two tiebreak sets in her semifinal with Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Morgan City Mayor Lee Dragna spoke to KQKI News Friday afternoon and gave an update on the city’s condemning of Inglewood Mall
which has been the location of the popular Mexican restaurant
Signs were placed at each entrance of the mall and at Tampico’s on Thursday
informing the owners and customers that the structure was condemned
subject to be demolished and that no one should enter the structure due to the condition of the roof
which was exasperated by Hurricane Francine
Tampico’s has been forced to closed as they were the last remaining tenant who leased space from the mall’s owner
Other tenants recently moved out of the mall due to recent water damage caused by the condition of the roof
water continues to leak from the ceiling with large amounts of standing water remaining on the floors of the mall’s corridor
Dragna said the city is allowing electricity service to remain on until Monday to give the owners of Tampico’s ample time to transfer their stock to their Bayou Vista location
Dragna also said officials have given the owner of the property two options
demolition or have a second party roofing contractor provide a report stating the roof is in repairable condition

rumbled ashore early Thursday and moved inland over northeast Mexico
bringing heavy rains to the parched region and leaving at least three dead
The storm was expected to weaken rapidly over land
but carry several inches of desperately needed rain inland to Mexico’s Tamaulipas
READ MORE: Tropical Storm Alberto, first named storm of hurricane season, forms in southwestern Gulf of Mexico
Alberto had spurred tropical storm warnings covering most of the western Gulf of Mexico’s coastline from Texas to Veracruz
The storm made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kmh)
Schools were closed across Tamaulipas state where Alberto came ashore and would be through Friday
Shelters were prepared across the state to receive residents trying to escape high water
As much as 5 inches (13 centimeters) to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain was expected in some parts of northeast Mexico and southern Texas
according to the National Hurricane Center
Some higher locations in Mexico could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain
which could result in mudslides and flash flooding
READ MORE: When the storm came, alerts came only in English. This team is trying to change that
Alberto had rumbled toward northeast Mexico as the first named storm of the season, carrying heavy rains that left three people dead. But the storm also brought hope to a region suffering under a prolonged, severe drought.
Mexican authorities downplayed the risk posed by Alberto and instead pinned their hopes on its ability to ease the parched region’s water needs.
“The (wind) speeds are not such as to consider it a risk,” said Tamaulipas state Secretary of Hydrological Resources Raúl Quiroga Álvarez during a news conference late Wednesday. Instead, he suggested people greet Alberto happily. “This is what we’ve been waiting for for eight years in all of Tamaulipas.”
Much of Mexico has been suffering under severe drought, with northern Mexico especially hard hit. Quiroga noted that the state’s reservoirs were low and Mexico owed the United States a massive water debt in their shared use of the Rio Grande.
“This is a win-win event for Tamaulipas,” he said.
But in nearby Nuevo Leon state, civil protection authorities reported three deaths linked to Alberto’s rains. They said one man died in the La Silla river in the city of Monterrey, the state capital, and that two minors died from electric shocks in the municipality of Allende. Local media reported that the minors were riding a bicycle in the rain.
Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel García wrote on his account on social media platform X that metro and public transportation services would be suspended in Monterrey from Wednesday night until midday Thursday when Alberto has passed.
Alberto was bringing rains and flooding to the coast of Texas as well.
The U.S. National Weather Service said the main hazard for southern coastal Texas is flooding from excess rain. On Wednesday the NWS said there is “a high probability” of flash flooding in southern coastal Texas. Tornadoes or waterspouts are possible.
Areas along the Texas coast were seeing some road flooding and dangerous rip currents Wednesday, and waterspouts were spotted offshore.
In Mexico, residents expressed hope for Alberto bringing rain.
Blanca Coronel Moral, a resident of Tampico, ventured out to the city’s waterfront Wednesday to await Alberto’s arrival.
“We have been needing this water that we’re now getting, thank God. Let’s hope that we only get water,” said Coronel Moral. “Our lagoon, which gives us drinking water, is completely dry.”
Alberto was expected to rapidly weaken over land and dissipate Thursday.

Early on the morning of September 19, 1955, Hurricane Hilda slammed into Tampico, Mexico. The storm, which brought great death and destruction to the city, was the second of a trio of hurricanes to plague the Mexican Gulf coast that year.
Despite the woe brought by Hilda, the custom of retiring hurricane names had not yet been instituted so the name remained on the list. It was used again in 1964, and that Hurricane Hilda, which struck Louisiana, caused the name to be retired.

On Tuesday, the Anaheim City Council approved a cooperation agreement with Jamboree Housing Corp. to convert the site of the former Tampico Motel into housing for youth between ages 18 and 24 who are transitioning out of the foster care system or are otherwise at risk of being homeless.
“It is our goal that this is a stepping stone for them,” said Grace Stepter, executive director of the Anaheim Housing Authority. “They [will] not age out of the program.”
The city is also closing a $6.9-million funding gap for the project.
TimesOC
Anaheim City Council approved the $5.3-million purchase of the property under its motel conversion program
Two years ago, Anaheim had originally envisioned the site as housing for seniors who were either recently homeless or at risk of becoming unhoused.
State Sen. Tom Umberg had earmarked $5.5 million in state funds to go towards a motel-conversion purchase in the city. CalOptima also provided $2 million for the future project.
When Anaheim acquired the half-acre property for $5.3 million in April 2023, Jamboree Housing Corp. followed with a proposal seeking to offer 32 studio rental units to a much younger demographic that has never had a permanent supportive housing project address its needs in the county.
City officials selected Jamboree in a competitive bid over one other potential developer.
The total development cost of the 32-room Tampico Motel conversion at State College Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue is estimated to run about $26 million. The existing building will not be torn down.
While most of the project’s funding will come from federal tax credits and bond financing, Jamboree asked the Anaheim Housing Authority for a $6.9-million loan to close a financial gap. The developer also requested that the city issue $20 million in bonds.
The youth housing project, which would be 100% affordable at extremely low-income levels, found broad support among council members, who only had clarifying questions about it.
Over the years, the Tampico Motel attracted a large volume of calls for service from police. (Gabriel San Román) “At one time, this motel had the highest calls for service in the city,” said Councilman Stephen Faessel, who represents District 5 where the conversion will take place. “I’m very happy that the Tampico [Motel] is going to be completely rebuilt.”
Faessel took the motel conversion’s complex web of funding as a prime example why council members would consider introducing an Anaheim Local Housing Trust Fund law later on in the meeting, which they did.
Responding to questions from Councilwoman Natalie Meeks, Stepter assured that the future housing site would have a parking management plan, as currently only 12 parking spaces are allotted for incoming tenants.
She also stated that the bus stop at the intersection made the location “prime” for the target demographic who don’t always own cars.
Councilwoman Natalie Rubalcava cited concerns about guarding the new housing development against crime at the intersection, particularly around the bus stop.
“What’s the plan to make sure that our youth are protected if we’re not providing enough parking spaces and they will be expected to take public transportation?” she asked. “How are we addressing that? Right now we’re not doing a good job.”
As part of Project Homekey, three former motels along or near Beach Boulevard in Stanton are now permanent supportive housing sites.
Stepter noted that a gated entrance would lead into the housing site with buffers added along the back of the building. Conversations are also ongoing about what to do with a walkway that cuts through to a neighborhood of single-family homes.
“The one thing our department does pride itself is [that] once we build, we don’t walk away,” she said. “If there are issues, we will remain there and we will address them collaboratively with Jamboree.”
Once opened, on-site social services will be required and offered at the future housing site.
The project-based voucher system that will move tenants in will only put an income ceiling when people are applying for housing. If future tenants get on solid financial footing through stable housing and services, their share of the rent would increase, accordingly, up to 30% of their total income.
Once a tenant exceeds that mark, they effectively “graduate” out of the program.
After half an hour of discussion, the funding plan for the Tampico Motel conversion found favor with all council members, who voted unanimously to advance it.

The mangroves there are known to host a hundred or so crocodiles

French manufacturer SOCATA introduced the TB family of single-engine piston aircraft
fixed-gear TB-9 Tampico with a 160-horsepower Lycoming O-320 to the complex
over 2,000 examples were produced by the time production came to an end in 2012
This particular example is a 160-horsepower TB-9 and offers a compelling change of pace from the Cessnas and Pipers that tend to represent the price range
it has seen far less use than many examples that were heavily used in training environments
And in addition to having hundreds of hours remaining before TBO
the engine has only 71 hours since receiving a top overhaul to freshen it up
Climb into the cabin via a wide-opening gullwing door - on either side of the cabin - and you’ll be welcomed by a neatly-organized panel that’s a welcome change from earlier panels with haphazardly-arranged gauges
