the government of the border state of mexico city – estado de méxico – launched a program called ‘bicentenary cities’
which proposed careful land-use planning and the creation of a state structure for key population centers. one of the centers selected was tecámac
however, neither the state or the private developers fulfilled their commitments of establishing an urban settlement with sufficient services
educational and recreation areas. the explicit aim of building a model city
got lost between the change of governments and the uncontrolled growth of housing
the people tecámac were left to their own devices and the result of the unplanned construction has been captured by moz

As The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sought to help people in need throughout Mexico in 2023
We believe that all of God’s children should have access to the services and resources that allow them the basic needs of life
and we are committed to helping,” said Lilian Guzmán
manager of Welfare and Self-Reliance of the Church of Jesus Christ in Mexico
She presented the 2023 annual report at the multistake center on Temple Square in Mexico City on Jan. 25, 2024. Representatives of more than 40 foundations as well as private and public assistance organizations attended, reported a news release from ChurchofJesusChrist.org
The report summarized efforts by the Church and its work with foundations and nonprofit organizations
“We are grateful for the opportunity to serve others,” Guzmán said
“We believe that humanitarian aid is an expression of our love for Jesus Christ and our neighbors.”
said: “The true purpose of the Church welfare plan also includes promoting self-sufficiency as a way of life,” explaining that self-sufficiency “encompasses various facets of a balanced life
Leaders of organizations and foundations spoke about benefiting from the Church’s generosity and passion for helping others
They called the Church a great ally in the work to help those in need in Mexico
In November 2023, the Church held a cleanup day around Acapulco to clear all the damage from Hurricane Otis. Then in December 2023, the Church donated 10,000 boxes of food to help those affected by the storm
the Church worked with leaders in Ciudad Juárez to improve conditions at a temporary shelter for migrants and displaced people
The donation to the Kiki Romero Shelter includes kitchen equipment
The project will directly benefit 5,000 migrants and displaced people who pass through Ciudad Juárez each year, explained the Church’s Mexico Newsroom
On Feb. 7
the Church donated a state-of-the-art surgical microscope to the Dr
Jesús Gilberto Gómez Maza General Hospital
Elder Adrián Ochoa
General Authority Seventy and first counselor in the Mexico Area presidency
shared how the Church was pleased to be a part of the effort to serve others
“We hope that the donation of this technological equipment
which will allow advanced ophthalmological care to be provided to those who need it most
serves as an example and a reminder of the love that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has for the people of Chiapas,” Elder Ochoa said
In January, the Church collaborated with the Bertha O. de Osete Foundation to donate 311 wheelchairs and walking aids to help people — mostly children — in Oaxaca and Chiapas
Tuxtla Gutiérrez México Mactumatzá Stake President José de Guadalupe Moreno said the project was a clear example of how the Church promotes self-sufficiency and dignity

Mexico City’s Distrito Federal is the nation's largest urban administrative unit
Of the 22 million residents of the metro area
If you were to ask most Mexicans what the country’s “second city,” the runner-up in terms of population
While Guadalajara is in fact the second largest metro area in Mexico
the country's second largest municipality is Ecatepec—a growing
multi-faceted district of greater Mexico City
More than 1.6 million people live in Ecatepec; in adjacent Tecámac
is home to some 800,000 residents (including the previously-mentioned Ciudad Satélite)
There's no particular message in to tying together these images as a set
they're all taken in the Estado de México
in Mexico City's rapidly growing hinterland
in these different municipalities around DF
there is a huge amount of diversity in architectural and neighborhood form
until you pass to the next neighborhood to find it with rough dirt roads
shadowed by a tangle of DIY electrical wiring
with manicured plantings and modern amenities
Given that Ecatepec alone is more populous than all but the four largest cities in the U.S.
we should expect a palpable multiplicity of styles

A 12-year-old who gave birth to a baby boy in México state last Wednesday will receive medical
health and wellness assistance as well as a 2,500-pesos-per-month stipend
gave birth uneventfully after eight months of pregnancy
said Tecámac Mayor Mariela Gutiérrez Escalante
who posted news of the birth on her social media accounts
The father of the baby is also a minor — aged only 15
The new family will live together with his mother
the woman has expressed willingness to take care of the couple and her new grandchild
The young mother assured the DIF family services agency that she also has the support of her own family
“We haven’t been abandoned,” the young mother reportedly told the social workers
“[The father and I] are living together by our own decision
and we remain in contact with our families.”
The mayor said that besides the financial support and periodic follow-ups with the couple to check on their living conditions
mother and baby would also be offered free health services by the DIF
Gutiérrez had publicized the birth to promote a new government social welfare program for minors in the state that has to date registered 70,000 children in order to document their physical and emotional health
a program which she said could avoid more cases like the one she was highlighting
Gutiérrez said the 9,276 children the program has identified are in need of medical
psychological or nutritional attention and will begin to receive it in March

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum was in Hidalgo this weekend to ceremonially inaugurate construction on the planned Mexico City-Pachuca passenger train
Located about 106 kilometers north of Mexico City
Pachuca is a city in central Mexico and the state capital of Hidalgo
The passenger rail service would connect three states and include a stop at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in México state
It will be electric with double electrified tracks along all 106 kilometers of the route
With an estimated speed of 120 kilometers per hour and a capacity of 718 passengers per train
the journey between AIFA and Pachuca will take only 20 minutes
Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena said that the project will include green walkways
soil and water quality near the route will also be monitored as part of efforts to make the train an ecologically sustainable travel option
The commuter railway line seeks to improve access to AIFA while facilitating connectivity for commuters between Mexico City and Pachuca
It is expected to benefit the inhabitants of Zumpango
Temascalapa — all municipalities in México state — and Tizayuca
Communications and Transportation Ministry (SICT) show the commuter train will require an initial investment of 50 billion pesos (US $2.5 billion)
the Defense Ministry (Sedena) will be responsible for the project
Sheinbaum said during the inauguration that she will soon be in the state of Querétaro to inaugurate construction on other commuter train routes
is to create passenger train routes that extend to the border city of Nuevo Laredo
During her presidential campaign, Sheinbaum unveiled plans to build three new train routes based on the model of the Maya Train
In addition to the Mexico City–Pachuca line
plans include a train to connect Mexico City with Nuevo Laredo and Mexico City with Guadalajara
Her plans also include the expansion of the Maya Train and the Interoceanic to Guatemala
Sheinbaum’s plan builds on former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s commitment to revive the use of passenger trains across the country
the Mexican government eliminated passenger train service
but now it is seeking to revitalize it as a viable option to improve mobility
