Shutterstock ID 780298633 The best margaritas typically begin with clean, additive-free tequilas that allow the natural agave flavors to shine "I'm a big fan of Don Fulano—especially for margaritas It's a clean spirit with no additives and the agave plant flavor comes through very strongly Other tequilas sometimes have additives such as vanilla or oak flavoring that can throw off the balance and also leave a bitter aftertaste Having that clean tequila/agave flavor is key to a great margarita." Purity and balance matter even more if you're dialing back the sweetness which is why many top bartenders favor blanco tequilas—or sometimes a carefully selected reposado—for their cocktails fresh lime juice margarita served on the rocks in a dark restaurant While traditionalists might reach for a blanco some experts find a well-made reposado adds just the right amount of depth Bar Lead at Whiskey Neat in Fort Lauderdale “For a standard Margarita I find that I’ve been leaning more towards a Reposado because it has enough flavor and a touch of natural sweetness to it that you don’t need to go heavy on all your other Margarita ingredients A good one to use would be Tequila Ocho Reposado 100% agave and no additives really shines a light on the quality and care you want to put into your cocktail By adding only fresh lime juice and a touch of agave nectar you’ll have a quality Margarita that doesn’t overpower the natural flavor profile of the Tequila." a splendid occasion to celebrate Mexican culture and Tequila’s ubiquitous cocktail it is two parts Tequila to one part sweet liqueur the sweet liquor portion has consisted of different spirits The drink is typically served on the rocks or “frozen” as an icy slush The origins of the margarita have never been determined and remain hotly debated most accounts of its invention place its creation either in the U.S or along Mexican border towns catering to American tourists The first printed recipe for a margarita-like drink occurred in 1937 The Café Royal Cocktail Book has a recipe for a drink called a Picador consisting of Tequila Another explanation is that the margarita is a Tequila-based version of a popular Prohibition-era drink called a daisy Americans frequenting Mexican border towns in the 1920s may have been offered a Tequila-based version of the daisy Jose Cuervo Advertisement Promoting Margaritas By 1945, Tequila maker Jose Cuervo was already running advertisements promoting “Margarita it’s more than a girl’s name.” According to Cuervo the cocktail was invented in 1938 as a tribute to Mexican showgirl Rita de la Rosa both the name and the characteristic ingredients were invented sometime between the 1920s and 1945 Since most of the creation myths about the margarita occurred after those dates most popular accounts about the margarita’s invention are likely incorrect Below are tasting notes on various Tequilas offering a range of aroma and taste profiles that would be excellent in margaritas Crafted in the Highlands of Jalisco, Humano uses brick ovens (hornos) and autoclaves ferments with a proprietary yeast and double-distills in stainless steel pots with copper coils resulting in what the company calls an “additive-free Tequila that reflects centuries-old traditions.” It’s aged approximately 18 months in American white oak It’s smooth and velvety on the palate with a pronounced mouth weight It exhibits a layered complexity of dried fruit The finish is long with lingering dried fruit and caramel notes Pātsch is an organic additive-free Tequila produced in Amatitan The Tequila features a distinctive lime zest aroma that morphs into grapefruit and lemongrass The finish is long and smooth with just a hint of smoke and lingering citrus and caramel notes Ghost is a unique Tequila infused with a touch of ghost pepper the infusion of ghost pepper provides a quick hit of heat followed by a fruity The Tequila features floral and fruity notes on the nose The palate exhibits a fruity/spicy heat from the ghost pepper Tears of Llorona is an ultra-aged Extra Añejo Tequila created by Master Distiller Germán González Gorrochotegui it offers a complex flavor profile reminiscent of fine Cognac or aged whiskies The Tequila is incredibly complex on the nose The palate showcases a layered complexity of dried cherries with a subtle spiciness the company calls "a warm scarf on a cold day." Good news for margarita fans in Alabama—you may be paying less per drink than the rest of the country According to a new study from FinanceBuzz, our state has the lowest average price for a margarita at $6.74—32 percent less than the national average. It’s the fourth year in a row the website has found Alabama has the most affordable margarita. Alabama is the only state with the average price sitting below $7 and one of just three states to be below $8. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bama Buzz (@thebamabuzz) Margaritas mean a lot to us here in Alabama, which could be fueled by Mobile native Jimmy Buffet and his song “Margaritaville” (a new resort is about to break ground in Orange Beach!) You’ll find some big Cinco de Mayo celebrations happening throughout the state but if you’re looking for something as simple as sitting on a patio + sipping on a margarita, there are plenty of places to make that happen too FinanceBuzz says its collected the price for the smallest “house” lime margarita or equivalent from current online menus from five different restaurants or bars in each state and then averaged those prices to find the average cost for a margarita in every state celebrants can expect to shell out $10.03 on average for a margarita on Cinco de Mayo That average price is over 50 cents higher than it was last year which amounts to a 6.06% year-over-year increase All content on this site is Copyright ©  Rushing Waters Media LLC/The Bama Buzz 2020-2025 Privacy Policy We're huge fans of margaritas here at Chowhound. In our ongoing quest for the perfect margarita, we've explored the best tequilas to use for the ultimate margarita, debated chain restaurant margarita offerings While there's definitely something to be said for the classic combo of tequila and orange liqueur served icy cold in a salt-rimmed glass that's not the only way to enjoy this iconic cocktail There are plenty of ingredients beyond just lime juice that can add intrigue to your margaritas As a former bartender who is currently based in Mexico from classic lime to tropical fruit concoctions and versions featuring interesting add-ins like cactus juice and spicy Ancho Reyes chile liqueur I'm always on the hunt for additional inspiration so I decided to reach out to several mixologists and tequila experts for their takes on creative margarita flavors Some suggested flavors that were familiar but with unique twists If you're looking for some fun ingredients to level up your margarita game these are some surprising (and seriously tasty) ways to rethink this classic cocktail One of the first places I turned to for some creative margarita inspo was Cazcanes Tequila The company produces top-notch tequilas made with lowland agave from Jalisco and natural spring water that are perfect for margaritas The Cazcanes team was quick to respond with a recipe called El Alveado or "The Elevated One." The cocktail features tequila blanco mixed with fresh lemon juice and complex without being overly complicated El Alveado is an elevated version of the classic lime margarita The lemon juice provides enough brightness and acidity to play off the fresh agave flavors of the tequila Chartreuse is a French liqueur made with 130 botanical ingredients you have the citrusy bitters and salty saline solution to balance everything out Cazcanes recommends finishing the drink with expressed orange peel which essentially means twisting an orange peel over the top to release the oils and aroma Lime juice is a natural choice for margaritas because the acidity balances the sweet notes of the agave and helps temper some of the heat of the alcohol. If you're looking to swap out lime juice for another citrus juice, Stephen Roehm, beverage director at Cabo Wabo Cantina "It has this unique flavor that falls somewhere between raspberry and grapefruit The tequila and citrus complement each other beautifully making for a perfectly balanced margarita." At first glance, blood oranges look like regular oranges. Peel them open, though, and you'll find deep ruby-colored flesh and juice, hence the name. The taste is slightly sweeter than regular orange, which can provide a nice change from the tart tanginess that you get from a traditional lime margarita. With that in mind, you may want to go easy on additional sweeteners like simple syrup or agave syrup you can make your margarita the same way you usually would The end result is a luscious cocktail with a striking reddish hue Casa Azul Orgánico is pretty traditional when it comes to its tequila. Operated by third-generation agave farmers-turned-distillers, the company grows its own agave organically and refuses to include additives. Therefore, I wasn't surprised when the team suggested a margarita flavor that takes inspiration from one of Mexico's most popular traditional drinks Hibiscus (aka flor de jamaica) agua fresca is a tasty drink that's made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers in water The petals turn the water a vibrant red color and add a tart flavor that many liken to cranberry It's a flavor that works beautifully in margaritas Hibiscus water can be pretty astringent on its own so you'll probably want to add a sweetener when you're mixing up your margaritas Another option is to make a simple syrup by simmering hibiscus water with sugar until it turns viscous The Casa Azul team shared a great recipe for a sparkling hibiscus margarita that includes tequila blanco For bartender Amby Estevez of Caspian's Cocktails & Caviar and overall harmony are key when balancing any cocktail you'll need something bright and tart to take its place." One of his favorite swaps for lime is yuzu This sour citrus fruit originated in China has "that refreshing quality limes are known for." It also has floral notes that can play well off the nuances of a bright tequila blanco While you could do a straight swap of yuzu juice for lime juice Estevez recommends constructing your margarita so that it complements the yuzu's unique flavor profile a flavored sweetener like rosemary simple syrup can add herbaceous notes that can bring out the floral character of the yuzu You can also add lemon or orange bitters to add more depth to the citrus flavors consider using a blend of flaky sea salt and a hint of yuzu zest to enhance the citrusy aroma Many of the experts I spoke to recommended pineapple juice as a substitute for lime juice in margaritas It's naturally sweet and acidic and has a tropical quality that enhances the fruitiness of tequila pair well because they're typically very fruit-forward the pineapple's enzymatic properties give the drink a silky texture that makes for a smooth and well-balanced margarita and it becomes even more frothy and velvety you can peel the fruit and blend the flesh for a tasty juice that makes a mean margarita Prickly pear juice has a unique flavor that's refreshing You can use the juice in your margarita as a substitute for lime juice or create a syrup to enhance the flavor of a traditional margarita Lime juice can help cut through the sweetness "If I'm making a margarita-esque cocktail and I'm using different ingredients I will use lemon juice instead as it is slightly less acidic allowing for other ingredients to shine through in the profile." As the founder and CEO of Cheeky Cocktails a company that produces premium cocktail and mocktail mixers April Wachtel knows a thing or two about great cocktail flavors One of her top choices to bring unique dimensions to a margarita is guava round fruit has pale yellow or green skin and flesh that ranges from yellow to light pink and red almost floral sweetness that pairs well with tequila's vegetal notes." but it can also be a tad on the sweet side Wachtel recommends pairing it with something acidic like a fruity vinegar or verjus a sweet and sour juice that's made by crushing unripe green grapes earthy peppers to add depth and prevent the drink from feeling flat if the issue is that your drink is too sweet you can always add more of every component except the sweet ingredient to balance it out." It's poured ice-and-all into a margarita glass and given a float of añejo mezcal "This drink will get everyone out strutting for sure." Olive juice might seem like an unlikely margarita ingredient but it makes perfect sense when you break it down which enhances the flavors of both the tequila and any citrus or sweetener in the drink "The Dirty Sue adds a clean salinity and replaces the salted rim." Olive juice also introduces a subtle umami depth This works especially well with blanco tequila slightly briny twist on a margarita that's surprisingly smooth and drinkable Ryan Andrews, beverage director for GBOD Hospitality Group is a huge proponent of using tropical flavors with agave spirits refreshing notes that naturally complement bold flavors Andrews said that passion fruit is a favorite at the group's restaurants This unique fruit has pulpy seeds that can add body and texture to margs If you're not a fan of seeds in your drink you can strain them out or purée the seeds for a smoother texture Andrews's favorite cocktail is called Sweet But Not Too Sweet along with tang from the passion fruit and a hit of mouth-tingling spice "The tropical flavors and the punch from the passion fruit make this a standout cocktail and then the subtle heat from the fire bitters and the tangy spicy note from the Tajín lingers on the palette making this a repeat order 99% of the time." While Andre Teixeira, general manager at Amaya Modern Mexican at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas loves experimenting with indigenous Mexican ingredients for his margaritas one of his favorite non-lime variations of the cocktail features flavors that you're more likely to find north of the border The drink is called the Flor de la Pasión and it consists of blanco tequila "The blend of lavender and blueberry gives it a unique floral and fruity twist while the fresh lemon juice keeps it bright and balanced." If you've been keeping up with the canned craft cocktail trend, chances are you've come across Cutwater The company has a wide range of tequila cocktails many of which were created under the expert guidance of Gwen Conley who is the head of innovation and global expansion When I asked Conley what her favorite non-lime margarita flavor is and Cutwater's Spicy Mango Margarita is hands down my new favorite." The cocktail is new to the Cutwater collection Mango is a great addition to margs because it brings tropical flavors and a nice velvety texture The spiciness can help counter that sweetness and make the drink much more exciting Conley believes jalapeños and serranos are the perfect choice "They bring a balanced heat that's more 'Oh that's nice' and less 'Where's the fire extinguisher?' It's the perfect combination of heat and sweet — a little unexpected Experimenting with mixers is one way to give your margaritas a facelift, but you can also play with different spirits for a new twist on the drink. Adrian Gonzalez is the general manager of the Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park an intimate bar featuring a range of Mexican spirits that can be used to level up traditional margaritas but sotol is another great option due to its light smokiness and high minerality." Like many of the experts I interviewed, Katy O'Donnell, bartender and the vice president of brand development at Tequila Tromba is all about keeping things tropical when it comes to margarita variations Either frozen with a coconut purée or fresh shaken with coconut water." The slight sweetness of coconut complements the cooked agave flavors you get in many blanco tequilas vanilla notes you get from reposado tequilas There are several ways you can incorporate coconut into your margaritas You can use a coconut purée or cream for a richer texture or opt for coconut water to make the cocktail lighter and more hydrating You can also rim the glass with toasted coconut flakes to enhance the tropical feel and even a touch of spice like a dash of cinnamon or chili like fresh lime juice or a splash of pineapple juice can brighten the drink and keep it from being too heavy Many people tend to think of avocado as a salad ingredient or a topping for toast but it's technically a fruit and one that works surprisingly well in drinks like smoothies and cocktails Its creamy texture and mild flavor make it a great match for tequila Avocado adds richness without overwhelming the other flavors making the margarita smooth and satisfying balancing the tang of lime and adding a soft Bar manager Alex Serena of Teleferic Barcelona swears by the combination of avocado in margaritas "You can use avocado oil for a rich texture or blend the whole avocado directly into the shaker." His version of the cocktail includes tequila and a mixture of puréed avocado blended with simple syrup it needs something to amp up the sweetness and acidity or a vinegar-based shrub (a non-alcoholic syrup) for extra tang If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate there are plenty of opportunities in May in the Wilmington area toast to Mexican culture or just appreciate learning a new kitchen skill Here’s a look at some of the food and drink events happening at local bars the new Oden Brewing Company location at 116 Dock St is making it official with a Grand Opening party Look for food from Rude Bwoys Jerk BBQ beginning at 5 p.m May 1: The second annual Taste of Golf event takes place at the Shell Island Resort, 2700 N. to office policies are in full swing often mandating face time on weekdays regardless of any tequila-fueled soirees the night before Almave a non-alcoholic spirit made with blue agave has come up with a work-around for those who still want to party but also spare themselves the painful hangover and awkward absence that could follow.  The fast-growing brand, founded by seven-time Formula 1 world champ Lewis Hamilton and distiller Casa Lumbre will give away a water cooler that dispenses booze-free margaritas instead of H2O Cinco de Mayo has legions of American fans—30% of legal drinkers take part and 50% of all drinks that day are margaritas it’s a margarita holiday,” Serino told ADWEEK “And we have just as much right to be there as a full-strength tequila or cerveza,” given Almave’s premium ingredients and production process “It can be important and worthwhile for NA brands to lean into holidays tied to booze so that they can showcase an inclusive way to celebrate without drinking,”  Sheinbaum told ADWEEK.  A new booze-free brand called Liquid Luck debuted on St. Patrick’s Day, Sheinbaum noted, and NA beverages have amped their presence during spring break, Fashion Week, Grammy events, Super Bowl The booze-free dispenser “is a way to enjoy a classic margarita over lunch without slowing down your day and messing with your work flow,” Serino said “And it’s a way for us to double down on celebrating the holiday midday—really heroing the lunchtime occasion.” An accompanying campaign from indie agency Fellow Kids—dubbed “MSFW,” meaning margs safe for work—outlines this year’s May 5 conundrum and offers its spicy mocktail solution The goal was to continue destigmatizing the drink segment stoking “a sense of pride around NA culture and being playful about it,” Serino said but sober curious consumers can also find Almave at an expanding group of bars and restaurants around the country At several in the New York area—Nomad Tea Parlour among others—the brand will pay the check for chips and guacamole for those who buy two of the brand’s margaritas on Monday Cinco de Mayo trivia: Americans drink an average of 3.5 tipples, putting the day in sixth place on the list of “booziest holidays,” per Alcohol.org Mardi Gras is first (with a migraine-inducing 4.5 drinks) May 5 became known as an alcohol-centric holiday in the 1980s, when beer makers heavily targeted the Spanish-speaking population, according to Jose Alamillo, a professor of Chicago studies at California State University, per a Time magazine story it commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 Soberchella 3.0: Booze-Free Brands Get More Immersive for Festival Season Kickoff who has been in the spotlight lately for his much-anticipated debut for the Scuderia Ferrari HP team appeared at the seminal Beverage Forum trade show this week in Los Angeles to tout Almave He also took time to hype the campaign and the Moth has taken off in the UK, where it’s the fastest-growing RTD brand, and it’s largely down to this 14.9% ABV expression It’s made with Enemigo Tequila, and its premium qualities saw it win a Gold Medal at 2023 RTD Masters Price: £5.80 (US$7) for one 100ml can; £20 (US$25) for a four-can pack The big bold chilli printed on the blue can says it all really – this one is a spicy number and it’s not afraid to show it The cocktail is made by infusing Tequila with whole chillis – jalapeño Whitebox said the result is a ‘perfect balance of sour For those who prefer it milder, Whitebox also does a classic, straight-up Marg (named the Squeezy’s Margarita) which is canned at 19% ABV and combines lime and triple sec with a hint of salt for a bar-quality serve Could the Mirror Margarita be the fairest of them all? This one from Hacha’s Deano Moncrieffe went down so well it became its own standalone brand, after first starting life as a cocktail on the London agaveria’s menu The serve gets its name from its crystal-clear colour and is made with Cazcabel blanco Tequila blended with citrus oils and organic malic acid for a taste that’s perfectly balanced between sweet and sour Another one for those who live on the spicy side, rosy cheeks are all but guaranteed with The Drinks Bureau’s Spicy Margarita which is canned at 10% ABV and made with Tequila This Spicy Margarita won Taster Master at last year’s Pre-Mixed RTD & Hard Seltzer Masters: the top accolade an RTD can win at the competition As one judge gushed: “Agave comes through with lime and a little bit of savoury spice The RTD also comes in a game-changing party box Pour away for a day of silliness under the sun in the park – you can’t get much better Eye-catching packaging goes a long way and Pimentae reels you in with its tropical-printed cans but there is substance to go with its style – the brand’s classic Tommy’s Margarita brings together El Tequileño with zesty lime and a sweet touch of agave The brand was founded in 2021 by Alice Parmiter and Wynter Karo who are looking to change the ways consumers view and enjoy Tequila if you don’t mind committing sacrilege on National Margarita Day In November 2022, travel-inspired RTD brand Tom Savano moved into canned cocktails and the world was all the better for it the Margarita – but not any old Margarita: a Hot Honey Margarita The brand also does a Tommy’s Margarita for those who’d rather stick to the familiar including a Single Estate Reposado Margarita and a Spicy Mezcal Margarita Be the envy of your next train ride with Aussie brand Curatif’s moreish take on a Tommy’s which pairs Tequila Tromba Blanco with Australian lime juice and agave nectar the spice level finds the right spot without making it feel as though your face is on fire thanks to what the team say took ‘many months of palate-challenging testing’ The brand has also just released a pineapple version of the serve for an added touch of sweetness Price: £24 (US$30) for 500ml bottle containing five serves Black Lines never misses with its bottled cocktails (see its Negroni) and its Tommy’s Margarita is no different the serve has all the hallmarks of what you get in a nice bar but with the added bonus of being able to enjoy it in peace The bottle features a label designed by Brooklyn-based illustrator Spencer Gabor and is worth keeping around for after – perhaps repurposed as a flower vase When you’ve promised a big group of people coming over that you’re making Margaritas and great ones at that – here’s your saviour which is blended with the flavour of fresh fruit and extract of lime for a ‘crisp bite’ and ‘tangy finish’ Act like you’ve come up with your own twist by grabbing one of 1800’s flavoured Margaritas, such as the strawberry one pictured above – no one has to know We are using cookies to give you the best experience on our website. Mesero offers a vibrant fusion of Mexican spirit and American life reflected in every dish on its flavorful menu Mesero showcases its culinary roots through both traditional and modern fare—from award-winning Queso Mesero and brisket tacos to the indulgent Hollywood Cobb and signature Rose Burger News | May 2 I’ll admit it: I have politely turned down offers of tequila for one reason — it made me cry I ended up in tears (and not the good kind) I’ve realized one very important truth: All tequila is not the same; aswith many things Tequila has come a long way from its party-shot reputation “If Jose Cuervo Gold is the only tequila you’ve ever had you’re not drinking tequila,” says Ron Girotti “You’ve definitely missed the boat because there’s so many good flavors and I feel like that kind of gives people a bad taste I don’t drink tequila because I had that 20 years ago.” Girotti credits Patrón Tequila with creating a more palatable tequila that brought consumers out of their comfort zone and into the world of tequila imbibers have access to a wide range of tequila expressions from small-batch family- run distilleries to operations that are crafting award-winning spirits a complex production process and several diverse styles as varied as fine wine or whiskey more people are stepping into the world of sipping tequilas and “flight” experiences to discover the nuances of this Mexican spirit “Don’t be afraid to try some new things and to experiment because there’s a lot of really good stuff out there and a lot of good smaller brands,” Girotti says “And nothing really tastes like the Jose Cuervo Gold That almost doesn’t even count as tequila in this world anymore.” Whether you’re looking for a sipping experience or the perfect base for a cocktail a brief tutorial on how tequila is made and the differences between styles will not only elevate your next tequila experience but might also avoid tears or other potential pitfalls Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant specifically “agave tequilana,” which thrives in the volcanic soils of Mexico’s Jalisco region The process starts with jimadors harvesting mature agave plants known as the “piña,” is extracted and baked to convert its starches into fermentable sugars the piñas are crushed to release their sweet juice called “aguamiel.” Traditionally a heavy stone wheel pulled by a donkey; though most distilleries have gone modern The juice is fermented using yeast which converts the sugars into alcohol; it’s then distilled twice to produce a clear while others are aged in oak barrels (or other vessels) to develop different flavors and characteristics each with its own profile and aging process: Blanco (or Silver) – Often considered the purest expression of agave blanco tequila is unaged or aged for less than two months It’s a clean and crisp spirit with vegetal and peppery notes making it an excellent choice for cocktails like margaritas, palomas Reposado — Reposado means “rested” and refers to tequila aged for at least two months — but less than a year — in oak barrels the agave flavor remains fresh but the oak imbues notes of vanilla Girotti notes that reposados are a great middle-ground for newcomers to the world of sipping tequila They’re perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks or creating a twist on classics like a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned Extra Añejo — This category includes tequila aged for more than three years These tequilas are often compared to high-end cognacs or bourbons with rich Cristalino — A newer style that is technically an añejo or extra añejo but has been filtered to remove the color picked up from the oak barrels The result is a clear tequila with the complex flavor of an aged spirit but the appearance of a blanco vegetal flavors hold up well when mixed with citrus and other ingredients making them ideal for classics like margaritas and tequila sunrises You want to look for a blanco that is smooth and crisp but with enough agave character to shine through in a mixed drink Some cocktail enthusiasts prefer using a reposado for a richer flavor The slight barrel aging adds a layer of complexity that can complement the other elements in the drink without overpowering them extra añejos or heavily aged tequilas are usually wasted in a cocktail — like whiskey or bourbon they’re meant to be enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to open up the flavors bar manager at Tavern on the Square in Lionshead has convinced customers to create their favorite whiskey cocktail with tequila; Project Funway Get ready to be wowed by the fashions at Project Funway which returns to Dobson Arena again this Saturday One of the most creative fundraisers in the Vail Valley Patrón tequila has been around for a long time Patrón is probably the first top-shelf tequila that comes to mind there are lots of other reputable tequilas but its popularity among those in the know is well deserved and they're backed by a bit of star power — one of Patrón's founders is the man behind the hair products company Paul Mitchell and Casamigos counts actor and filmmaker George Clooney in its lineup of founders Regardless of what goes on behind the scenes, the similarities between these two tequilas can leave consumers wondering which to buy, and, more importantly, which makes the better margarita? If you're ready to find out, look no further. I bought a bottle of Patrón Silver and another of Casamigos Blanco, whipped up some fresh margaritas and tasted them both so we can put the question to bed A closer look at my methodology can be found at the end suffice it to say I have quite the resume when it comes to experiencing various tequilas and margaritas let's find out whether Casamigos or Patrón tequila makes a better margarita Margaritas are the most popular tequila cocktail they are deliciously sweet and tart all at the same time and there's no denying they are refreshing the type of tequila you choose to incorporate makes a big difference While these flavors come together as expected it obviously affects the flavor of your margarita It's also well-rounded and ignites the palate I found that both tequilas were frequently requested in margaritas it seemed like less experienced drinkers opted for Patrón and more experienced or adventurous tequila drinkers chose Casamigos you should expect a margarita to cost anywhere from $2 to $4 more if you upgrade to Casamigos or Patrón The Patrón margarita I whipped up tasted fresh Thanks to the recipe I used (which can be found at the end) I needed to make sure I could really taste the tequila and get a feel for how it complemented a margarita — or not I'm pleased to announce that Patrón definitely mixed into my drink exceptionally well and I could still detect some of the signature Patrón flavor on the back end a friend who also assisted in my taste test immediately picked it out as the Patrón margarita I drank more than my fair share of Patrón in my 20s but I think it's the smoothness that makes it stand out Patrón Silver doesn't make a bad choice at all Next up on my taste-testing adventure was a margarita made with Casamigos Blanco Much like the Patrón margarita I sipped on earthy tasting notes shone through the bright citrus and sweetness in expert fashion It certainly had more of a burn or bite that lingered on the palate as well and even though I used the same measurements for both drinks It somehow stands out while still mixing in and complementing the other ingredients beautifully If you're going to pay premium prices for a top-shelf tequila you don't want it to get lost in your drink Considering how potent fresh lime and sugar are If you're looking for a tequila to blend in and go largely unnoticed in a margarita I much prefer a layered flavor with bite over a smooth It tastes like a tequila that was intended for the American market Patrón is labeled silver for crying out loud so I know a thing or two about both Casamigos and Patrón and the almighty margarita l made more of them than I can count during my time behind the bar and tequila has been my spirit of choice for decades it's fair to say I'm somewhat of an expert I purchased a bottle of Casamigos Blanco and Patrón Silver so I could give them each a fair shake You can rest assured that I made both margaritas exactly the same I also cleaned all of my measuring and mixing supplies to ensure no flavor transferred from the first to the second drink In order to get a better taste for the tequila in my margaritas I stuck to a basic recipe: 1.5 ounces tequila and 1.5 ounces of fresh-squeezed lime juice — shaken and poured over ice But not all these mixed-up margaritas are created equal Some gleam with balanced flavors and creative flair while others fall flat or venture too far from classic margarita territory That's why I've taken on the tough job of sipping and savoring every margarita Texas Roadhouse has to offer then ranking them from least impressive to absolute must-try Whether you prefer frozen or on-the-rocks, a time-honored and pure margarita makeup, or something a little more daring, this ranking will help guide you to the cocktails bound to make your happy hour even happier while steering you away from those ain't worth a lick Some recommendations are based on firsthand impressions of promotional materials and products provided by the manufacturer The Hurricane is a cyclone of flavors all mixed into one Texas-size schooner glass It combines the chain's simple lime house margarita with the ingredients of a classic Hurricane cocktail This means Captain Morgan makes a guest appearance and flaky salt on the rim to top off the coral-colored concoction I suppose the double-booze beverage is meant to taste sweet and tropical with a hint of citrusy tequila it just tastes like cherry syrup and a hangover Thick saccharine grenadine comes on strong — possibly because it was poured a bit too heavily at the bar even after a few good stirs with the straw as it makes any and all possible hints of tequila walk the plank The rum's strong spice is present in every swig and certainly warms you up as it makes its way down your gullet While its overall taste could certainly use some work what turned me off most about the Hurricane is that it completely does away with that true margarita essence Lime and tequila are unrecognizable under a flurry of fruit flavors and rum If you're browsing Texas Roadhouse's website you won't find the Jamaican Cowboy mixed up with the likes of other margarita beverages alongside Texas Roadhouse favorites like the Porch Rocker or the Island Cooler it's allowed entry into this taste test — and onto the margarita page of the in-restaurant menu — thanks to the small splash of house margarita mix tacked onto the end of its recipe The other piece of the boozy equation involves orange and pineapple juices cough the Hurricane margarita that's still fresh on my mind and palate) it's made different by swapping Captain Morgan for Malibu and adding in DeKuyper Peachtree schnapps rather than grenadine — they're small changes that make a world of difference The coconut from the rum and the pineapple combined with the influence of the tree fruits gives the drink the tropical status the Hurricane couldn't dream of It's dangerously smooth with no large bites of liquor the sugar on the rim would help to soften the blow my answer once again is "not really" — which is the reason why it's ranked so low I would drink this sweet on-the-rocks treat again in a heartbeat The house margarita is to the chain's cocktails what the hand-cut sirloin is to its steaks it's not only the restaurant's main squeeze but also the backbone of all its other margs In the fine print of all the other libation options you'll see that it's made with various components that have been blended or swirled with the signature mix I respect the house margarita for its straightforward nature and the work it does for its fellow cocktails the on the rocks iteration unfortunately falls a bit flat (there's also a frozen version available Somehow the basic recipe tastes both watery and a touch syrupy at the same time even though there are consistent flavors of light tequila giving off strong bursts of tartness that dissipate into a bitter aftertaste this is still a margarita I would gladly employ to wash down a meal of steak and buttered rolls I appreciate the thick salt used to cut and elevate some of the other flavors I still think you're getting your money's worth tequila-wise this house marg would without a doubt rival the options shaken up by other chain restaurants Every bar menu needs a fruity margarita on its books for those of us who can't shoot whiskey or who just enjoy a touch of sweetness and variety Texas Roadhouse offers a few legendary drinks that fit into this category including a fruity strawberry and a fruity raspberry margarita I tried out only the raspberry rendition during my visit I assume the sister strawberry would have followed the same pattern so I don't think I missed much by skipping it this is your run-of-the-mill frozen margarita The slush-like texture is inviting — but at the same time it promises a brain freeze if you sip too fast It's certainly sweet with the tiniest hint of artificiality I didn't feel like a cavity was forming on impact — let's put it that way agave tangs of tequila arrive on the back-end I think the spirit is once again sneaky and stronger than the beverage may lead you to believe easy-to-drink margaritas that are more like a dessert Slurpee than an alcoholic beverage I think there are a few other options on the menu you may like just a bit more Slipping into the sipping world of the frozen house margarita felt natural and smooth blended twin of the earlier on the rocks flagship margarita it comes off more balanced without any one ingredient trampling over the next The frozen form consists of the same simple makeup if you need a refresher (anyone would after four giant chalice-sized margaritas) This amalgamation comes pre-blended with ice — that means no blenders whirring at the bar — so all that's left to do is pour in the Dorado Gold tequila everything just felt right about this frosty glass It's imbued with a subtle sweetness throughout offset by pangs of the citrus fruit which kick off steadily before the tequila kicks in perhaps a result of frigidly numb taste buds or just the sign of an expertly homogenized beverage Some may criticize that this cool imbibe accomplishes the bare minimum the mango margarita wins the beauty contest It's a work of art that belongs in a mixologist magazine Not only does it dazzle with its golden hue salty Tajín and a trio of real mango chunks hovering in its center because this fruit-blasted bevvy also happens to be quite easy on the ol' palate it's sweet but not too sweet; it manages not to overwhelm your senses with a sugary surge What's more is that the mango infusion is impressively authentic It's dissimilar to dried mangos or the diced mangos swimming in liquid inside of a Dole can like fleshy meat just pulled from the outer skin This rich flavor complements the natural citrus of the margarita mix and it elevates a succulent slush to a cocktail splashed with complexity The Tajín is the chef's kiss that polishes everything off; it cuts the sweetness and gentle acidity with a flame of chile and moderate spice Sugar or even salt would make for just as good a match for the versatile mango margarita The old saying goes "wine before liquor," but what about if you drink the two simultaneously Texas Roadhouse's sangria margarita allows you to take a walk on this boozy wild side we meet again) with its classic red sangria The combination of the two makes for a festive yet slightly menacing swirl of deep maroon and pale green that greets you as the great goblet is brought round to your table three different garnishes — including an orange slice and maraschino cherry — hint at the beverage's diversity of ingredients This was love at first sip — or more of a slurp The vino's full-bodied fruit flavors permeate each taste turning the entire drink into something that resembles a more suave and sophisticated frosé The margarita fixins meld beautifully with this steady base delivering citrus zest and giving it an obligatory Texas-like flair In the midst of all these strong personalities the Dorado Gold does tend to take a back seat I know it's working in the shadows to supplement the wine's efforts I honestly didn't know what to make of this dual-alcohol cocktail as I stared it down for the first time as you can have your wine and your margarita too without compromising on taste Texas Roadhouse knew what it was doing when it named this masterpiece of a margarita. The Legend is not your average tequila It stands out from the steakhouse's sea of other margs thanks to its not one all mixed together to create a drink of epic proportions — both in size and taste The spirits trio of choice includes Patrón Silver The three are married to the chain's signature margarita sour and on the rim lies a unique dusting of black lava salt With this one-of-a-kind makeup the Legend is miles ahead of the house on the rocks variation though the two share essentially the same look and color It's everything that you would want in a classic margarita and reaching for the top-shelf liquor paid off; the smoothness exuded from each sip is unmatched It's uncertain if even Patrón ever imagined someone would whirl together three of its most prized tequilas into one glass nonetheless do just that and wind up with a wonderfully full-flavored yet stabilized beverage — you would never guess the marg was inundated with a trilogy of tequilas Texas Roadhouse takes this road less traveled though and I can't thank the restaurant and its clever mixologists enough Margaritas aren't just another drink at Texas Roadhouse — they're the drink With an entire page on the in-house menu dedicated to their variations these margaritas are as integral to the experience as the warm rolls and steak Each has its own panache but is built from a foundation of the chain's signature margarita sour mix a reliable crux that holds the entire bar menu together Every boozy choice satisfies a different preference and taste bud need but some inevitably display higher palatability than others As I sipped my way through the imposing chalices I first looked for a clear margarita quintessence — a bright Drinks like the Hurricane and Jamaican Cowboy fell short here veering too far into the realm of generic tropical cocktails Once that classic identity was established I evaluated the balance of flavors: sweetness A great margarita lets tequila shine without making you feel like you just took a straight shot of the agave-based liquor — I like to refer to this as "smoothness," which the last few options clearly exhibited Garnishes and rim adornments were the icing on the cake for many of the margaritas but what really won me over was a well-built and sophisticated drink that you would have a hard time finding anywhere else due to its unique recipe That particular drink happened to be the three-tequila blend: the margarita Best Coffee Shops in San Antonio The Best New Restaurants in Austin, May 2025 The Best Restaurants in Austin for Private Dining, Events, and Parties Where to find the unofficial cocktail of the city Fortunately, Eater knows good margaritas.
