Victory at the very last opportunity means that Martín Demichelis' side takes on the regular season's strongest side

New Jersey for two of its three Phase One games including James Rodríguez and Club León's visit
The identities of the three Liga MX teams New York City FC will face in the 2025 Leagues Cup are now confirmed, with Club Puebla, Club León, and Deportivo Toluca FC officially lined up as opponents during Phase One of the reformatted tournament
Two of the three games will be "away" matches for New York City, though they just have to travel across the Hudson River to Harrison, New Jersey. Puebla and León will both face NYCFC at the newly-dubbed Sports Illustrated Stadium
That will be followed by a marquee visit from Colombian star James Rodríguez and his Club León teammates, scheduled for Friday, August 1 – with the James connection already being promoted by New York City FC over on Twitter

August 5 to round out the not-quite-Group Stage
Part of the new setup for this tournament involved splitting the field of 36 teams into two geographic regions
and then ranking the teams within those regions based on their 2024 regular season performances in MLS and Liga MX
NYCFC gets an opponent from each of the three tiers – Toluca is the highest-ranked Mexican side in NYCFC's group
while Puebla is the very lowest-ranked team
To advance to the Knockout Stage of this year's tournament
NYCFC will need to put up enough points to be one of the Top 4 MLS teams in the competition – while MLS teams are only playing Liga MX sides during Phase One
they're competing against their fellow MLS sides in one big league table to determine who gets the league's four spots in the Quarterfinals
To get back to the Quarterfinals for a second straight year

They currently sit in eighth place through six matches of the ongoing Clausura half of the 2024-2025 campaign
and they're one of the top-ranked Liga MX sides who benefit through hosting privileges and less travel

but they climbed up to 15th during the Apertura of 2024-2025 and are a similar 14th through six Clausura matches

The Liga MX match between Atletico de San Luis and Toluca will be played at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramirez in San Luis Potosi
It will kick off at 7 pm PT / 10 pm ET on Wednesday
San Luis manager Domenec Torrent will once again miss the services of Franck Boli due to a thigh injury.
The likes of Sebastien Salles-Lamonge and Vitinho should continue in support of Diego Abitia up front.
Manager Antonio Mohamed is unlikely to be able to call upon the services of Antonio Briseno and Franco Romero due to knocks.
Portuguese forward Paulinho bagged a hat-trick last time out and will aim to add to his tally of 25 Liga MX goals this season.
Together, they scored more goals than several Liga MX teams: Puebla, Santos, FC Juárez, Mazatlán FC, Querétaro, Chivas, and San Luis
América, aiming for a fourth consecutive title, had to settle for second in Clausura 2025
as to be expected when the headliner is an all-Mexico City affair with Cruz Azul hosting Pumas
while both sides aim to solidify their Liguilla positions
The two were caught up in midweek CONCACAF Champions Cup action as La Máquina recorded a goalless draw with Club América whilst Pumas scored a last-minute equaliser against the Vancouver Whitecaps
Tigres also had to settle for a stalemate in their continental midweek tie against LA Galaxy but turned their attention to Puebla
Other standout fixtures for the weekend saw Club América travel to Hidalgo to face Pachuca
a fixture Las Águillas have won just once in their last six meetings
Chivas were winless from their last four and had the difficult task of heading to Monterrey
whilst Toluca met bottom-side Santos Laguna in an attempt to reduce the gap at the top of the table
León dropped even further down the table and into fifth with a draw against Los Gallos
they were at the top of the league and unbeaten
they are winless from their last four as Aldahir Pérez scored on halftime to cancel out Salvador Reyes's early goal for the Guanajuato side
Necaxa made it three wins in a row to close the gap to fourth in a game that was decided by a hectic ten minutes of action
Necaxa took the lead through Pavel Pérez moments before José Zúñiga got Tijuana level from the penalty spot
which lasted for two minutes as José Paradela restored Necaxa's lead
Tijuana sit seven points outside of the playoffs and would need a miracle in the final three games to mount the most unlikely of comebacks
Pubela ended a run five straight league defeats and a streak of four consecutive losses to Tigres with a goalless draw on Friday night with the visitors gearing themselves up for a crucial second leg in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against the LA Galaxy
Juárez moved a step closer to confirming a place in the play-in tournament with a point in Guadalajara as Guilherme Castilho opened the scoring for the visitors
but they were denied maximum points when Matias Coccaro pulled Atlas back into the game to salvage a point
Salomón Rondón scored the only goal of the game to keep Pachuca's hopes of an automatic spot in the playoffs alive
The result leaves Club América joint top with Toluca
Necaxa and León are all close behind with three points being the difference between all five sides
All the action in this one came in the first half as San Luis took the lead twice through Rodrigo Dourado and Sebastien Lamonge hitting the back of the net to move the side up to 13th
The big meeting between Sergio Ramos and Javier Hernandéz took place in Monterrey as Ramos' Rayados had the last laugh with a comfortable win
bouncing back from their surprise loss to Tijuana last week
The three points take Martín Demichelis's men up into 8th
four points behind their city rivals in Tigres
Pure chaos broke out at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla as Cruz Azul held on for maximum points against their city rivals
Pumas took the lead through Ignacio Pusetto
but the sides were back level before the half hour mark due to a Rodolfo Rotondi equaliser
The real drama started in added time of the first half when Pumas had a penalty but were denied by Kevin Mier in the Cruz Azul goal
before La Máquina went up the other end and scored a spectacular free kick through Andrés Montaño
who scored a second in as many league games
Cruz Azul doubled their lead in the second half when Rotondi scored his second of the game but were made to hold on when Adelberto Carrasquilla converted the second penalty of the game
making up for Nathan Silva's missed attempt earlier in the game
Los Diablos Rojos joined Club América at the top of the table this weekend with a narrow win against bottom-side Santos Laguna
Paulinho scored his third in four games to get the ball rolling before Marcel Ruiz's long-range curler flew towards the top corner to score an incredible second for the hosts
they were put under pressure by Fernando Ortiz's side when Javier Guemez pulled one back for the visitors
but the hosts were able to hold onto an important three points

It will kick off at 4 pm PT / 7 pm ET on Saturday
Toluca manager Antonio Mohamed has a clean health bill with the exception of defender Brian Garcia who remains a doubt due to a knock
Alexis Vega and Paulinho have been impressive in front of goal lately and should both continue to feature from the onset
Tuzos boss Guillermo Almada will be without injured duo Andres Micolta and Miguel Rodriguez
John Kennedy will start just behind center-forward Salomon Rondon
with Owen Gonzalez and Oussama Idrissi supporting from the flanks
How to watch the Liga MX match between Atlas and Toluca
With their postseason hopes hanging by a thread
this might be their final shot at securing a Play-In berth
especially with a three-game winless skid looming large
most notably disappointing draws and defeats against FC Juarez and Mazatlan
who sit atop the current Clausura table but have a tricky clash against third-placed Cruz Azul on Saturday night
Though Antonio Mohamed's men are riding high on a four-game winning streak
their narrow 2-1 escape against Santos Laguna last weekend exposed vulnerabilities
Mohamed will need to show more tactical restraint to avoid the kind of scares that nearly cost them last time out

The Liga MX match between Atlas and Toluca will be played at Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara
It will kick off at 9:05 pm ET / 6:05 pm PT on Saturday
Much of Atlas' slide has been down to a shaky backline
and unless their defensive issues are shored up quickly
or Mato Miljevic (depending on who's picked to complement Atlas attackers if Uros Djurdjevic is injured or dropped) may struggle to swing momentum
Leonardo Flores remains in doubt for selection after sustaining a knock
Gustavo Del Prete is dealing with a sprained knee and is expected to be sidelined for approximately another week as he works his way back to full fitness
Carlos Cruz is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury and isn't projected to return until early November 2025
There's still no clear timeline for Eduardo Zaldivar
who continues to recover from a knee issue
while Mauro Manotas also remains out with a cruciate ligament injury that has ruled him out indefinitely
Brayan Lozano is managing a groin injury that has kept him out of recent action
Franco Romero is nursing a knock and remains doubtful heading into the weekend
with his availability set to be determined closer to kickoff
Veteran midfielder Hector Herrera is also questionable after picking up a muscle injury
and the club will assess his condition in the coming days
Antonio Briseno is expected to miss around a week as he recovers from a knock
while Brian García is on a similar timeline
with both players targeting a return in the short term
Many Mexican states are indelibly associated with a single dish
in the case of México state and its capital city of Toluca
the association is with a single ingredient — albeit one that has flavored countless dishes over the past 500 years
Yes, Toluca’s history of chorizo production is that old. It dates to the first years of Spanish colonization in the early 16th century, when livestock such as cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens were introduced to the country. Hernán Cortés
was responsible for the birth of the industry in Valle de Toluca
which celebrates its quincentenary this year
but he also assigned someone to run them regularly to ensure they didn’t become too fat
Spain had already established a tradition of making minced sausage from pork and pork fat in a “natural casing” (a pig’s small intestine)
those sausages looked nothing like the ones made in Spain today
The Spanish discovery of the paprika chile pepper in Mexico used to make pimentón
native chorizo was distinguished from Spanish ones
most notably through feeding the pigs with corn
another Mexican ingredient previously unknown to Old World sausage makers and one that markedly changed the sausage’s flavor for the better
The addition of more chile peppers — some combination of ancho
and chile de árbol for chorizo rojo; and serrano
and jalapeño chiles in later chorizo verde — also ensured Mexican chorizos would never resemble the Spanish version
although European ingredients like garlic and ginger would also be added
Toluca was not only the chorizo center for the country
However, chorizo was by far the most famous of these pork-derived foods from Valle de Toluca, a fact confirmed by a legendary event in 1713 when the viceroy of Nueva España organized a pirámide gastronómica in Mexico City to honor a newly born prince to the House of Bourbon
All the representative dishes from the country’s various regions were present at this so-called “Monument to Gluttony” (I so hope time travel is invented during my lifetime)
Today, chorizos from Toluca are generally classified by color: rojo or verde. But the latter, despite its subsequent fame, is a relatively recent invention. When Alfonso Sánchez García wrote Chorizo del Toluca: apuntes gastronómicos
a landmark tome on the history and influence of the state’s signature sausage
That’s likely because the book was published in 1976
and chorizo verde is thought to have been created sometime during that decade
with its invention often attributed to Texcalyacac
Toluca’s iconic sausages evolved to be made using specific ingredients and processes
Most Mexican chorizo is fresh rather than smoked or cured and thus must be cooked before serving
Like chorizo, longaniza’s roots are in Spain. But it’s instantly identifiable in Mexico due to its color (it’s more maroon than red thanks to the use of achiote along with paprika and guajillo peppers) and size. Chorizo is often tied off in servings of about 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) whereas longaniza
Quality was also a differentiator in the past
as chorizo was made from high-quality pork
while longaniza was traditionally made from cheaper portions
Chorizo has long since transcended the borders of México state
in the sense that it’s also made elsewhere and is used as an ingredient in a staggering number of regional recipes
it’s a common complement to eggs for breakfast
But it’s also added in everything from tacos
and quesadillas to myriad stews and sauces
For the best introduction to chorizo in el estilo de Toluca, order a pambazo de chorizo con papas — a signature regional sandwich featuring chorizo and potatoes — ideally during the city’s annual Expo Chorizo
a monument to gluttony not quite on the order of the Gastronomic Pyramid in 1713
but an event gaining in influence and importance
No other state in Mexico and no other country
has ever achieved the quality of chorizos made in Toluca
a fact as true today as it was 500 years ago
the term choricero is sometimes used synonymously with toluqueño
and indeed Los Choriceros remains one of the nicknames for Toluca’s football (soccer) club

An adult lion roaming the streets of a town about an hour’s drive from central Mexico City prompted concern among residents Wednesday morning
but fears subsided after the animal was safely recaptured
The incident occurred in San Pedro Cholula
a locality in México state about 18 kilometers west of Toluca and 52 kilometers southeast of Mexico City
After escaping from a local facility known as the RECICA wild animal shelter
Videos and images shared on social media showed the lion walking through public areas
But when officials from local security and civil protection agencies arrived for a search operation
they confirmed that the lion was secured safely and without incident by someone from RECICA and returned to the facility
the foundation’s acronym stands for Rescate de Circo y Cautiverio
or Rescue from Circus and Captivity in English
A 2015 federal law that prohibits the use of wild animals in circuses across Mexico resulted in such animals being confiscated by federal authorities from circuses and similar shows
Many ended up in facilities like that of RECICA
which appears to have existed since at least 2016
located in the community of San Pedro Cholula
houses various wild felines — including lions
According to a 2022 feature by the news media outlet Excelsior
it at one time had about 80 wild animals living on the property many of whom had been rescued from circuses and other similar shows
although it included in that number animals such as coatis and raccoons
In November, a pair of inspections at a San Pedro Cholula
facility operating under the name “RESICA” resulted in the arrest of four dozen individuals
The federal environmental agency Profepa conducted the raid after the officials from the state of México’s Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) were met with armed resistance during an earlier attempted inspection
Authorities reportedly found on the premises more than 30 exotic animals
Profepa said the animals were found in good health and well-fed
and “that the place allegedly has authorization as an animal sanctuary and refuge.”
“the person in charge did not show proof that it is registered to operate as a Wildlife Management Facility or Property (PIMVS) and did not present the document with the corresponding management program.”
The newspaper El Financiero reported that a criminal complaint was initiated against the property owner
allegedly the leader of a criminal organization “linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.” The paper identified him as Francisco Torres Palacios
These incidents and others highlight ongoing concerns about wildlife trafficking and illegal animal trade in Mexico
Just this week, Profepa rescued an African lion that was found chained in a private home in Sinaloa. And last month, the agency rescued 12 animals — including five leopard geckos
three veiled chameleons and two three-keeled musk turtles — from a parcel delivery company
This isn’t the first time a lion has wandered the streets in México state. In late 2023, a lion cub was on the loose in Xonacatlán, about 20 kilometers from San Pedro Cholula

while captain Johnny Russell and forward Alan Pulido relieved Daniel Salloi and Erik Thommy
Toluca won at Children’s Mercy Park for the second straight year
having beaten Sporting in the Leagues Cup Round of 32 last August
but Vermes’ side enjoyed the brighter start on Monday
Afrifa cut centrally from the left wing and delivered a teasing cross that striker Willy Agada nodded marginally wide of the right post
Afrifa settled into possession off a cleared corner kick and sent a searching ball to the opposite side of the penalty area for Robert Castellanos
The center back sent a volley back across the face of goal and Nemanja Radoja’s booming effort from 15 yards carried over the bar
who starred in LIGA MX before joining Kansas City ahead of the 2020 campaign
almost vaulted Sporting ahead in spectacular fashion in the 34th minute
but his sweetly struck curler from 22 yards was cast aside by diving Toluca goalkeeper Tiago Volpi
Toluca found its footing and landed the first blow in the 40th minute
After Sporting failed to clear their lines inside the box
then finished low past Tim Melia for his second goal in as many Leagues Cup matches
Sporting suffered an injury blow in the 45th minute as Radoja was forced to exit
who had spent the last three weeks with the U.S
Second after his substitution into the game
Sporting were on level terms as Afrifa drifted into a pocket of space and unleashed a brilliant bending effort that beat Volpi from 25 yards

The right back latched onto the end of Marcel Ruiz’s searching diagonal ball and cushioned a header back across for Araujo to bundle home on the doorstep
making the score 2-1 in favor of the 10-time LIGA MX champions
Angulo had his bid for a brace denied in the 70th minute as Melia made a smart save to deny the Toluca playmaker from the top of the box
Sporting left back Logan Ndenbe received a standing ovation by entering the action for his first appearance since last November after overcoming an ACL injury suffered in the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs
Sporting committed numbers forward in search of a late equalizer
and a well-worked move down the left side involving Davis and Salloi culminated with Agada unearthing a shot that was blocked near the penalty spot in the 90th minute
