Facility currently offers 14MW of capacity across 4,600 sqm of white space
European data center firm NorthC Datacenters has broken ground on its 4.5MW expansion in Aalsmeer
In a recent LinkedIn post
the company said: “The first pile for the expansion of our data center in Aalsmeer is in the ground
managing director Jan Willem Dees turned on the drill.”
The Aalsmeer facility is one of four located in the Amsterdam region
the facility currently offers 14MW of IT capacity across 4,600 sqm (49,500 sq ft) of white space
Timelines for the expansion have not yet been provided
NorthC added the expansion has been built in response to “the growing demand for reliable
and sustainable IT infrastructure in the Amsterdam metropolitan area
NorthC currently operates 13 facilities across the Netherlands in Almere, Amsterdam, Oude Meer, Delft, Rotterdam (x3), Eindhoven (x2)
The company plans to add 11MW of IT capacity across its Dutch data centers
Most recently
the company announced it would expand its German data center footprint with facilities in Frankfurt and Berlin
Its existing German data center footprint includes facilities in Munich and Nuremberg
Both are also due to undergo expansions this year
though further details have not been shared
NorthC also operates four data centers in Switzerland
meaning "eel-lake," is located just outside of Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a popular data center market with Digital Realty
and Equinix all having a presence in the capital

Achieving fossil-free electricity use by 2040 is no small undertaking
We’re helping solve our customers’ big challenges by innovating and delivering solutions that are better for their business - and for the environment
The opportunity: to advance the City of Aalsmeer’s goal of fossil-free electricity use by 2040 with a novel approach to capture and recycle heat generated by NorthC Datacenters as a source of heat for surrounding facilities
The solution: a custom electric heat recovery system
Often referred to as the flower capital of the world
draws thousands of visitors each year – many touring the renowned Royal FloraHolland auction and its 30,000 flower and plant species
While the colorful accolade is certainly notable
Aalsmeer touts an even more impressive distinction: the goal of fossil-free electricity use by 2040
paralleling other significant climate goals across the Netherlands
but a unique group of local entities – with different
yet shared interests – is already paving the way for progress
Brought together by their common sustainability goals and motivation to reduce community-wide carbon emissions
the municipality – along with NorthC Datacenters
a childcare center and a nearby plant nursery – joined forces to create the Aalsmeer Energy Hub
Data centers require significant cooling to run at optimum performance levels since their servers produce abundant heat
which is often collected by an HVAC system and expelled into the external environment – as was the case with NorthC Datacenters
Any heat released into the environment can be considered wasted – and since it takes energy to produce heat
more environmentally friendly route can be taken: capture and recycle it as a heat source for other functions
The choice was an easy one for Aalsmeer Energy Hub’s partners
Recognizing an opportunity to utilize wasted heat as a mechanism for reducing community electricity consumption and carbon emissions
childcare facility and plant nursery shift away from using gas fired boilers
the groundbreaking project was officially launched in 2019
Aalsmeer Energy Hub collaborated with Trane Technologies’ local team on developing a custom electric heat recovery system
leveraging Trane® CITY RTSF screw compressor heat pumps to capture excess heat from NorthC Datacenters and transfer it via heated water to the other three locations
chilled water from those facilities returned to the datacenter – providing its necessary cooling requirements
This energy transfer delivered a lower base temperature at NorthC Datacenters
significantly reducing the electricity needed to create an optimal temperature within the facility
the combination of the heat pump’s low-GWP refrigerant (R-1234ze)
on-site solar array providing its electricity
and the ability to reach 80 degrees Celsius output
“I think a lot of people don’t know it is rather easy to heat and cool your building with heat pumps
so it starts with educating people on their economic

By embracing bold innovation and advanced technologies
the Aalsmeer Energy Hub project is a quintessential case study for accelerated decarbonization
Previously wasted heat from NorthC Datacenters is now captured and dispersed to the childcare center
plant nursery and sports complex – all of which are achieving cost reductions and natural gas use
The closed loop system has decreased natural gas use
enabled a transition to low-GWP refrigerant and improved the overall energy efficiency of all facilities
avoiding nearly 400 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually – equivalent to the energy used by 48 homes each year
all Aalsmeer Energy Hub partners are saving a cumulative ~210MWh in electricity annually

Trade Fair Aalsmeer attracted the same number of visitors as in 2023
with a 5% increase in international trade visitors
On 25,000m2 of space specially cleared for the fair at our hub
the 622 exhibitors offered a diverse range of products
Besides the 80% growers of flowers and plants
exporters and hardware and value-added suppliers
There were several anniversaries and award ceremonies during the Trade Fair Aalsmeer
including celebrations of anniversaries such as Decorum's 25th anniversary and Kolster's 80th anniversary
Dutch Flower Group Award and Greenovation Award
The Glass Tulip Award, which rewards the best market introduction in five categories, was presented to growers who have worked for years on innovative products. There were no less than two awards per category; The jury award and a public award! There was a lot of voting for the audience awards, as many as 3,460 times! Flowers are being destroyed at the flower auction in Aalsmeer
The Dutch horticultural sector is sounding the alarm about the effects of the coronavirus crisis
the auctions are struggling with low prices and the need to destroy the flowers
Spring is usually the busiest time of year at the Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the Netherlands
Now most of these flowers are being composted
The coronavirus has grounded deliveries and shipments
And now the Dutch government has banned public gatherings of any size until June
People are hardly buying flowers right now
"It's a dramatic situation," says Michel van Schie, spokesman of Royal FloraHolland
the country's largest cooperative of growers
which sells some 12 billion plants and flowers each year
The Netherlands accounts for nearly half of the world trade in floriculture products and 77% of flower bulbs sold globally
The Dutch exports overall are valued at $6.7 billion and the sector accounts for about 5% of the country's gross domestic product
Now revenue has dropped by 85% since last month
"You can't order [flowers] to stop growing," he says
"And it's not possible to keep them in storage when they're not sold
The decline comes as the Netherlands battles the rapid spread of the coronavirus. As of Tuesday, 276 people have died in the Netherlands from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and the country has identified 5,560 cases of infection
most through an auction in the Netherlands
Farmers there are leaving their roses to rot
Flowers are stored prior to their destruction at the flower auction in Aalsmeer
Van Schie says some Dutch growers have been giving their unsold flowers away to hospitals or even to passers-by on the streets
More than 150,000 people work in floriculture
many in family-owned businesses that have been operating for decades
"It will be a disaster for local communities if these businesses go under," he says
Daniel van de Nouweland runs Marjoland
pink and yellow roses in greenhouses in the southern Netherlands
"We have like 32 football [soccer] fields of roses," de Nouweland points out
The company has weathered the 2008 financial crisis and a bacterial infection that killed off many of his blooms
"But this crisis is different because we don't know when it will end," de Nouweland says
Marjoland is only selling about 30% of the 170,000 roses it produces every day
The rest it either gives to charity or presses into compost to be used as biomass fuel
Van Schie says the cooperative he represents
is talking to the Dutch government about financial lifelines for flower growers like Marjoland
"Otherwise a lot of these businesses will go bankrupt," he says
"That will damage our industry in a very heavy way
And the flower business is one of the most important for the Dutch economy."

It should come as no surprise that the largest flower auction on the planet belongs to the Dutch
who are synonymous with the notion of the blooming flora industry
Known as "the Wall Street of flowers,” FloraHolland is the largest floral trader in the world
it is one of the largest auction houses of any kind in the world
They process flowers from 8,000 nurseries around the world and sell them to distributers at the Aalsmeer and Eelde warehouse
who in turn put bouquets into the hands of customers.
approximately 20 million flowers from all over the world are sold off in this monolithic 243-acre building in a fast-paced
Buyers can either sit at terminals in the actual auction house to place their bids
They used to roll the lots of flowers out for the bidders to see (and smell) but those days have given way to the less romantic but more practical method of showing photographs of the wares on the terminals
and leaving the actual goods in the freezers to keep them fresh
The Dutch style of bidding starts with the highest price
until someone's itchy finger hits the buzzer and secures the lot
this is the center point of 60% of the world's cut flower market.
Its warehouse measures over 200 soccer fields in size
Workers move about the cavernous space via electric carts and aerial tramways
and various other blossoms are stacked on giant rolling shelves
creating a colorful patchwork meadow when viewed from above.
Perhaps because flowers are such an ephemeral
it might seem odd that there is such a high-stakes industry supporting them
These are supposed to be the things of poetry
But FloraHolland balances both the romantic nature of flowers with the busy industry surrounding them
The company’s copy is peppered with slogans like
planting seeds of opportunity…” Though flowers are sentimental
selling them has to be done quickly–they won’t last forever
Despite its struggles with the changing market
the auction is still a fantastic place to visit
with the automated system of tracks and trolleys that move the product around
you can visit the center and watch the action from a special gallery that puts you right in the middle of all the action.

the community radio station for the town of Aalsmeer
has taken their on-air studio digital with a new mixing console and “virtual radio” software solutions from Lawo
The main studio installation consists of a 16-fader Crystal surface powered by a Lawo Compact Engine
Value played a big part in the selection of Crystal
according to Lennart Bader and Niels Tenhagen
self-employed broadcast professionals who began their respective careers volunteering at Radio Aalsmeer
Funds for the renovation came from generous donations by Rabobank and Schiphol Airport
Tenhagen says that at the start of their project
and the Lawo Crystal quickly became our favorite

and a swimming pool all use warm water from the site
Dutch colocation player NorthC has successfully set up a district heating system in Aalsmeer just south of Amsterdam
a Netherlands-based specialist refrigeration publication
The Hub manages to capture and reuse the facility's waste heat and around 20 percent of it goes to the IKC Triade school
and a swimming pool and sports hall called Die Waterlelie
according to the RCC Koude and Lucht story by Uko Reinders
Other heat could be used elsewhere but the distance to other potential customers would make this harder
The data center uses outside air cooling as long as the temperature is below 18˚C
"That heat was previously blown into the air," says Reinders [Google translate]
because it involves a lot of energy: no less than 4MW
This is now 0.75MW less during peak days; that energy is used for heating at three companies and institutions in the area."
The water goes through a 1,400m pipe and reaches customers at a temperature of 22˚C
the project decided to go deep and use horizontal directional drilling (HDD) because of the risk of meeting other pipes and potentially Second World War ammunition
the water returns to the data center at a temperature of 12˚C
because the water flows at a high speed of 1.5m/s
Jeroen Roos of the energy transfer company Infinitus told Reinders
Fertiplant uses warm water all year round to heat its offices and planting areas
The company initially hung onto its gas boiler as a backup
The swimming pool and the school have yet to fully test the system because they have been closed and not used heat during the coronavirus crisis
which could potentially use waste heat from the data center
NorthC would have to meet supply obligations to serve domestic consumers
Data centers are increasingly encouraged to help their neighborhoods to reduce emissions on heating
by offering their waste heat to nearby homes and businesses
comparatively few organizations have been able to benefit
because of the high capital costs of such projects
and the relatively low quality of data center waste heat - it tends to come in the form of warm air or lukewarm water
District heating systems only tend to exist in Nordic countries where the climate and political systems favor such developments
New district heating systems such as the Aalsmeer Energy Hub are a comparative rarity
However, in recent months, the data center operators of Europe have signed a climate-neutral data center pact, which promises that they will at least consider offering waste heat to district heating systems where appropriate
the Norwegian government's Minister of Energy Tina Bru has proposed that all data centers in Norway should be required to evaluate the possibility of connecting to one

Community radio station moves to all-digital infrastructure with Lawo Crystal console and RƎLAY software solution
Lennart Bader is CEO of RadioPush.co and Dancefoundation.com. Niels Tenhagen is creative technologist at nielstenhagen.nl
is situated about 13 kilometers south of Amsterdam
It is famous for or being home to the largest flower auction in the world
with more than 20 million flowers sold every day — so big that the whole of Vatican City could easily fit inside
Founded in 1991, Radio Aalsmeer is the community radio station for the municipality of Aalsmeer
producing approximately 60 hours of live radio every week
according to the latest audience research carried out by an independent constultance firm
the station is the fifth most listened to in the community
being located inside a building that originally housed a flower auction; it later became the birthplace of commercial television in The Netherlands
Radio Aalsmeer’s studio is prominently on display and visible to visitors
station staff put much effort into creating a clever design with custom furniture and logo wallpaper
had already been in operation for over 10 years at that time
In 2018 the tech team decided it was time for a big update
and a move to an all-digital infrastructure
We make up the tech team and launched our respective careers based on our volunteer work at the station
When we started looking for a new mixing console we visited trade shows like IBC and quickly decided that the Lawo Crystal was our favorite
We love the clean design and high-quality engineering
Literally every knob and button can be programmed
There are of course cheaper options available
but we felt the Lawo Crystal offered the best value for the money in our quest to further professionalize the station
working with really limited budgets forces you to be very creative
This project became a true passion for both Niels and myself
Thanks to donations from the charity funds of both Rabobank and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport
we were able to raise the money necessary for the project
Radio Aalsmeer purchased a 16-fader Crystal console and a Compact Engine with expansion boards to accommodate both analog and digital audio
We decided to do everything by ourselves and learn from the experience
The project took almost nine months to complete
We learned to program the console by just using it and following the manuals
our initial thoughts on solutions improved as we spent more time and pitched ideas back-and-forth to each other
[Read: Casablanca Broadcast Days Looks to Increase Knowledge, Skill Set]
so everything has to be as perfect as possible
The footprint of the previous console was much bigger than the new Crystal
so the team designed a piece of furniture to place on of the desk to cover the now-empty hole
and the new furniture houses three computer screens on an angle
The construction budget didn’t cover the Lawo GPIO expansion to the Crystal console
Lawo employs open standards throughout its product lines
so we went devised an open-source Ember+ solution based on a Raspberry Pi mini-computer
Our software is written in NodeJS and uses the Ember+ protocol to communicate with the Crystal
and also the LED strip that has been integrated into the new furniture piece
flashes blue when a phone call is incoming
and turns green when there’s somebody at the door
We are probably the only station with an Ember+ powered doorbell
all the playout and studio computers run Lawo RƎLAY VSC Virtual Sound Card software
VSC allows the PCs to send routable AES67 streams directly to the Ravenna AoIP network
The station’s switching matrix uses another RƎLAY product
We use Thimeo Stereo Tool for audio processing
and are now able to route signals as desired to and from various source and outputs
and even allowed us to add additional analog in- and outputs for various uses — to monitor the on air signal via a tuner
Stereo Tool software provides all the audio-shaping tools found in dedicated hardware
but virtualized and running in a PC environment
Radio Aalsmeer employs it not only to shape the station’s over-the-air signal
but also to pre-process the program feed prior to encoding with Icecast for live web streaming and for on-demand online listening
The station’s transmitter is also connected to the AoIP network
Located in the same building 500 meters distant from the studios
IP proved an efficient way of getting final programming from studio to air
We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved
It has turned out both very functional and beautiful
Our colleagues are in awe when they first see it
Change is always tough but it literally only takes about 10 minutes to explain the new Lawo setup
it’s just a matter of getting used to a new layout
With these up-to-date mixing and software solutions
Radio Aalsmeer is now future proof — and with a studio like this

is facing a challenge that could make the hardiest bloom wilt: Brexit
"We are preparing for all kind of disturbances along the way," Pasma said at the huge warehouse in Aalsmeer
"The worst is a hard Brexit and we are preparing for that as well."
The Netherlands has long been famous for tulips
and flowers remain a vital part of the Dutch economy
with 7 billion euros ($8 billion) a year in sales
Britain is the third largest market for the Netherlands' flower export business
flowers are flown in from around the world before being sent seamlessly to Britain or other parts of the European Union's single market
the political chaos around Britain's impending exit from the EU on March 29 next year has left businesses unsure about what kind of trade arrangements-if any-will follow
Businesses across the continent have been worrying about this since Britain voted to leave in 2016
but nowhere is the problem as pertinent as in a business where only the freshest produce will do
A virtual Wall Street for flowers a few miles from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport
Royal FloraHolland acts as both auction house and distribution center
Around a third of world flower trade passes through the Netherlands
with about 20 percent flown in direct from Africa via Amsterdam airport
and being checked by customs agents at the warehouse
with Russia and the United States also major destinations
Those headed for Britain are sent by ferry-90 percent-or via the Channel Tunnel
"It's a fresh product so we have to keep it cool and we have to bring it within one or two days to the customers," says Pasma
But Brexit risks leaving some of those flowers-whether destined for vases in people's homes
wedding bouquets or other blooms for special occasions-stuck at the border
Political chaos in London has raised fears that Britain could crash out of the EU without a deal
which would mean the return of customs and regulatory barriers
"We've been preparing for two and a half years now
but still the uncertainty remains on what kind of scenarios it will be so we are waiting for the decision so we can really work on a solution," Pasma said
With historically close trading links to Britain
the Netherlands has been one of the countries most worried about the fallout from Brexit
A Dutch official report this month estimated the cost to the Dutch economy of a no-deal exit at 2.3 billion euros up to 2023
while Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was one of only three European leaders that British Prime Minister Theresa May visited this week as she tried to win support for changes to get a deal through parliament
In fact Brexit has already hit the flower industry
"People in the UK will still put flowers on their table and they will still come from the Netherlands," he said

Royal FloraHolland offers floriculture companies both the option for leasehold and
Mayor Gido Oude Kotte: "Everything in Aalsmeer breathes flowers and plants
The development of Aalsmeer-Oost is taking place in close cooperation with the municipality and in good consultation with the surrounding area."
Cooperation with Royal FloraHolland in the area of logistics services
is an advantage in both issuing the land on a leasehold and renting it out
CFO Royal FloraHolland: "With growers or buyers who want to establish themselves in Aalsmeer-Oost
we will discuss in advance how we can strengthen the floriculture cluster through cooperation
The new building offers numerous opportunities for this
We also reserve space ourselves to provide existing and future services."
The site at Aalsmeer-Oost is ready for construction and the ring road
Work is currently still underway on the construction of the Undisturbed Logistics Connection (OLV) towards the N201 and a good connection to Schiphol Airport and the A4 and A9 freeways
Companies establishing themselves at Aalsmeer-Oost are directly connected to the product street that forms the link with Aalsmeer-Centrum
The new building lends itself perfectly to redesigning and optimizing logistics processes
the buildings can be given their own look with their own identity
such as with a specific entrance and the company name on the facade
This can already be seen at the first built-up plot already occupied by Marginpar
The five plots now coming on the market are directly connected to this plot at the visibility location along the N201

The schedule for connecting the rose clocks at Rijnsburg is still being decided
ShareBattery-powered trolleys and a miniature-railway-like system shuttle 20-million flowers and decorative plants around.By David EllisUpdated January 31
2019THE next time you’re worrying about what flower
rose or maybe potted plant to buy for that special someone
give a thought to those in the floral industry charged with going along and buying at the daily Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the Netherlands
Because here is the biggest flower auction in the world
held in a building with one of the largest floor areas on earth
An amazing twenty-million flowers and decorative plants are sold here to commercial buyers every day
in a building whose floor area of 518,000 square metres comes to 52 hectares
or around the equivalent of 100-plus football fields
The first Aalsmeer flower auction was held back in 1911 in a simple local eatery – the Café Welcome – and after that
auctions moved around various sites as they grew in size over the next 60-odd years
The current gigantic purpose-built market was opened in 1972 near Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport as the-then world’s biggest building by floor area
Flowers now sold here come from across Europe
and such diversely far-flung countries as Australia
Roses (live and cut) are the biggest sellers at twenty-eight per cent of all sales
Some Euro 4.6 billion ($7.3 billion in our money) worth of flowers sell here annually using the Dutch Auction system
in which the price starts high and works its way down
Daily trading starts at 7am and is all over by 11am (Thursdays 9am.) Something like 280 battery-powered “scooters” hauling shuttles of trolleys
are used to move each day’s 20-million flowers around the vast building
An elevated Visitors’ Walking Gallery for viewing the flowers on display and the auctions in progress has information panels in four languages..
but be prepared for a long walk to take-in as much as you can
