Inicio | News | Technology | Intervention in the Alphen aan de Rijn mast The Cellnex transmission tower in Alphen aan de Rijn was successfully replaced, with the support of VolkerWessels Telecom. Using several large cranes, the new tower, which is approximately 40 metres high, was placed on the 135-metre-high #Cellnextower. The transmission tower is used for radio broadcasts, telephony and mobile internet, among other things – these were virtually uninterrupted during the replacement. Thanks to the hard work of all those involved and the sunny late summer days, the replacement went smoothly and according to schedule. Transmission towers like this are well maintained to comply with all laws and regulations, but after decades they are often due for replacement. Minor maintenance will be carried out in the coming week. You can also attend a performance or watch a film at Castellum an entertainment complex with both a theatre and a cinema Cycle to a unique cathedral Europe has thousands of churches, chapels, and cathedrals, but there are few, if any, quite like this one. The somewhat mysterious Groene Kathedraal is located in the village of Hazerswoude-Dorp and looks like something straight out of a Legend of Zelda game Getting there by bike from Alphen aan den Rijn’s train station takes about 25 minutes Those willing to make the trek will find a small, ivy-covered cathedral with stained glass windows The Groene Kathedraal can serve as an oasis during a longer bike ride and The cathedral is the work of Tom and Conny van Dijk who originally bought the property in the late ‘90s with plans to use it as a nursery This eventually evolved into the cathedral after Tom decided to install a lookout tower Where to eat It’s hard to miss Maggie Blue It’s a large cafe that took over the Nutsgebouw If you’re looking for a more low-key place for dinner, try the aptly named Koeien en Kaas across the street. If you guessed they serve beef and cheese dishes, feel free to reward yourself with a succulent rib-eye steak. Proto is an upscale eatery with lunch and dinner menus. Ristorante Pizzeria Is Morus has over 40 varieties of pizzas and a delicatessen full of Italian products Where to stay Pickings are rather slim in Alphen aan den Rijn, unfortunately. Try Stadsherberg Alphen. It’s a boutique hotel in the city centre with a cute cafe. Van der Valk Hotel Avifauna is another option with traditional rooms and more luxurious suites especially if you can’t get enough of the avian park next door The Ali-B2 becomes a bed and breakfast ‘botel’ during the off season between October and March along with select periods during other parts of the year. There are also several nearby campsites including Camping de Oude Rijn How to get there Getting to Alphen aan den Rijn from Amsterdam usually takes around 45 minutes by car The trip from Amsterdam Centraal via train is about five minutes longer Anything else? The fire department reported that 30 apartments had to be evacuated because smoke was spreading in the apartment complex. One person was treated in an ambulance. However, the resident did not need to be taken to hospital. According to the fire brigade, the other residents were safe and were temporarily accommodated in a central room in the building. The fire was discovered around ten to half past four in the morning and has since been extinguished. In addition, the flat was ventilated to get rid of the smoke, AD reported. Around 4.30 a.m., the fire department reported that the residents of 20 apartments were allowed to return to their homes. About half an hour later, most of the other residents were also allowed to return to their apartments. The apartment in which the fire broke out is no longer habitable, the fire department reported. However, the cause of the fire is unknown. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. Notifications can be managed in browser preferences. The machines were being used to restore a bridge on the river Rijn when they tipped over, crushing apartments and small shops beneath them. Some three hours after the incident on Monday afternoon, the number of people injured remained unclear, and local officials urged the public to stay away from the scene to enable rescuer teams to carry out their work into nightfall. Local fire brigade spokesman Ton Koot told The Associated Press that one person had been taken to hospital. He added that initial reports suggesting that between seven at 20 people were injured had been based on estimates on the number of people who may have been in the buildings. "We are stabilisng the situation so rescue workers can go in," Koot said, adding that two teams armed with heavy machinery usually used overseas for earthquakes were at the scene with five specially trained dogs tasked with trying to sniff out those trapped in the rubble. Images from the scene show an enormous metal pillar after it smashed into a building, and people standing behind tape cordoning off the area. A video shows the cranes moving a piece of decking on the river Rijn, before they crash onto nearby buildings. Haag and the biggest city Rotterdam also has a metro Based on Den Haag and Rotterdam is the RandstadRail operation which is becoming established in service and in identity To counteract the congestion encountered in this small but highly developed area the province of Zuid Holland is sponsoring a project for a new rail operation The Rijn Gouwelijn (RGL) project is for the creation of a tram-train operation from Gouda through Alphen aan den Rijn (both with populations of over 70,000) to Leiden whose population with adjoining communities exceeds a quarter of a million Already with the high population density characteristic of the Randstad region the RGL will pass through an area scheduled for more housing developments a western section will run north-west towards the coast branching to the North Sea resort and commuter towns of Noordwijk (12km from Leiden) and Katwijk aan Zee (8km) the latter is currently the Netherlands’ biggest community without any rail service Early indications were of a total project cost of €470m Since 2003 a trial service (which continues) with tram vehicles has run half-hourly over the heavy rail section from Gouda an interchange with the Utrecht-Den Haag main line also an NS interchange for Leiden and Utrecht Destined to become a composite part of the RGL operation this partly single-track secondary route has been made compatible with the low-floor trams New low platforms 40cm above the railhead opposite the standard NS high platforms or single platforms with ends of different height the publicly funded national heavy rail infrastructure body Remodelling of the Alphen aan den Rijn station area in connection with the RGL proper began in May 2008 The heavy rail section will gain extra stops as the project proceeds The RGL plans promoted by Zuid Holland in respect of the street-running sections through Leiden’s historic centre were rejected with a 69% vote by the city’s residents in a referendum held in 2007 Particular objections centred on the use of the picturesque Breestraat for rail use Although the vote carried no legal weight and opposition continues the intended alignment has been changed and will require substitute roads to be added The system’s busiest point is likely to be at Leiden Centraal on NS’s Amsterdam-Den Haag-Rotterdam main line prosperous Leiden has a large student population Deliveries of RandstadRail low-floor vehicles in Den Haag (Alstom Regio Citadis) as an indicator of the standards that may apply up to 35km/h on reserved track with the potential for 100km/h (62mph) running over the railway section At present the trams need only operate under the signalling system of the NS route over which they operate although dual systems are likely to apply on the completed scheme it is NOS cited witnesses as saying the man later shot himself in the head with a second weapon The gunman was described as a 25-year-old white male with blond hair who was wearing a leather jacket and camouflage pants His identity was known and it was "all but certain" he acted alone but investigators were not yet ready to release his name or age She said he was a native Dutchman from Alphen who has a criminal record said she was shopping at a drug store when she heard bangs and people in the store hid behind shelves When they realized a shooting was taking place customers shouted for employees to lock the doors "Then we heard the shots getting further away so he was walking back and forth," she said "Then we thought we'd have a look and there were two people lying dead near the entrance .. then he came back shooting so we locked the door again." "You hear about this sort of thing happening at American schools and you think that's a long way away," said Rob Kuipers, 50, a project manager. "Now it's happened here in the Netherlands." A resident who lives near the mall who gave his name as Marijn said the shooting went on for several minutes. When he went to see whether friends working at the mall were OK, he saw the shooter lying dead in front of a grocery store. "There was glass everywhere," the resident said. "He was just shooting everywhere as if it were the Wild West." Four of the wounded are in critical condition, five were in serious condition and at least two others were slightly wounded, Eenhoorn said. He described the incident as a "disaster of unparalleled proportions" for Alphen, known as a quiet suburb. "Under these circumstances, with many people shopping at the Ridderhof today, including parents with children, it's an incomprehensible situation," he said. Three people involved voluntarily went to police and are being treated as possible suspects A criminal investigation has been launched into the dramatic collapse of two cranes in the Netherlands that left a row of houses crushed and saw one man rushed to hospital. The crash on Monday saw two towering cranes stood on a floating pontoon in the city of Alphen aan den Rijn slowly topple over while transferring a new section of a bridge across a river as part of restoration work. The cranes fell into a row of houses and local shops, crushing the buildings beneath them, while one man was taken to hospital with a hip injury. Prosecutors said in a statement that three people involved in the bridge restoration had voluntarily visited police and were now being treated as possible suspects. One man was pulled from the rubble on Monday night as rescue teams with sniffer dogs prepared to work late into the night. Ton Koot, a spokesman for the fire department, said on Monday night: “We hope that the number of victims stays at this one man who was taken to hospital with hip problems.” Rescuers have since said they are confident that no one else is trapped underneath the collapsed buildings. At least 20 people are believed to be injured after two cranes collapsed into a row of buildings in a town in the Netherlands The accident took place at the Juliana Bridge in Alphen aan den Rijn – a town in the west of the Netherlands where about 100,000 people live The cranes were reportedly renovating the bridge when they collapsed into the buildings Local emergency services wrote on Twitter how there were "reports of several wounded" but no number has been confirmed yet a spokesman for the local fire brigade in Alphen aan den Rijn told Dutch broadcaster NOS a special search and rescue team is on the scene in order to find anyone trapped in the wreckage Live beelden van de rampplek #Julianabrug #AlpenaandenRijn http://t.co/75xJXU6nDW pic.twitter.com/TCAlbXGI8Z Filmpje van omvallen brugdek #julianabrug en kranen op huizen. #Alphen pic.twitter.com/E3p2Zz9Yb0 The cranes carrying a piece of the bridge crashed into a shop selling second-hand goods and a shop selling artists supplies as well as other properties, according to Dutch News. ALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN, The Netherlands — A man armed with a machine gun went on the rampage in a shopping mall in the west of The Netherlands on Saturday, killing at least four people including himself. Residents in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn heard machine gun fire in the shopping mall just after midday. The municipality confirmed the deaths of four people, including the gunman, with 16 wounded. It said the shooting took place near the entrance to the Ridderhof shopping center. The state broadcaster NOS, citing a shopkeeper at the mall, said the suspected gunman shot himself in the head. "There was panic in the mall, many people were running," the broadcaster quoted the shopkeeper as saying. "I saw people lying on the floor. When I saw the offender, I went inside and I closed the blinds." Emergency teams were called to the mall, and photos on social networking sites showed the area cordoned off by police tape with victims being carried to waiting ambulances. The shooter was described by NOS as a man in his mid-twenties dressed in a bomber jacket and army pants. Two people were killed and another two injured in a drugs-related shooting in the same town last Friday. Alphen aan den Rijn is located about 15 miles southwest of Amsterdam. "Two cranes and the stretch of roadway they were carrying fell on five houses in all," Ton Koot, brigade spokesman for firefighters of the central Netherlands region, said. "There are about 20 injured," he said, giving preliminary figures from first responders, who were being aided by air-ambulance helicopters. The cranes, working from barges, were renovating the Queen Juliana Bridge, a canal bridge dating from the 1950s, when the first machine went down. Unbalanced by the extra load, the second crane also fell. Dutch TV channel NOS said the cranes fell on a second-hand clothing store and another shop selling art and drawing supplies, but it was unclear how many people were inside at the time. According to the shop owners involved, this led to "dramatic" loss of income. Several of the business owners now face major financial problems. Four companies already went bankrupt, Kadir said. The letter sent to the municipality this week was written on behalf of three entrepreneurs. According to them, they suffered the most problems from the incident. The three want between two and three million euros in compensation. Should a court rule in their favor, Kadir will file a similar case on behalf of the 30 other entrepreneurs affected. Their damage claims will amount to tens of thousands of euros apiece. According to the lawyer, the entrepreneurs are only now demanding damages because they hoped that long ongoing settlement negotiations will prove to cover their damages. "We had long hoped that the emergency fund would offer release. But the municipality and insurers put in every effort to pay no money", he said to NU.nl. "We have absolutely no interest in a lawsuit; that would likely take months, and most of the victims don't have that time. But the municipality left us no choice." Kadir said.
