managed to keep his Amerongen Castle and greatly expand his influence in the village How did he maintain his position in a time when the privileges of the nobility eroded This is the question on which Amerongen resident Leo van Putten defends his doctorate at UvA you taught history and live in the village of Amerongen How did you become involved in the life of Godard Count of Aldenburg Bentinck?“Walking around the historic village of Amerongen one immediately notices a certain monumental richness radiating from it and Amerongen Castle occupying a prominent place I had previously written a booklet on the history of Amerongen and while writing it I came across the life of Godard Who was Godard van Aldenburg Bentinck?“He was born in 1857 and grew up in a European high noble family at Middachten Castle in De Steeg His father was related to English nobility Godard automatically received an international orientation from home.” “Godard went to Brighton in England for his education With the intention of eventually going to the prestigious boarding school Eton But during his preliminary training in Brighton – unlike his brothers – he was found underqualified and returned to the Netherlands to finish his education something that hampered him throughout his life.” he was entrusted with Amerongen Castle and one-third of Amerongen’s territory He was welcomed with much fanfare: 164 men on foot and 85 horses More than 30 years after the introduction of the constitution of 1848 which had eroded the rights of the nobility at the local level the society of the classes continued to live on.” you can see that the festive welcome is also a façade Godard does face opposition as he tries to consolidate his position in the village the castle had been empty for almost eighty years because its previous occupants – Godard’s family – had fled to England during the French Revolution and had not returned the young count had to win his place within the main institutions within the village: the church the town council and the influential tobacco farmers In all these areas he managed to gain influence To what extent is this due to Godard’s own talents and to what extent to his privileges?“That is hard to say the nobility still owned territory and capital He also took his status as an international nobleman with him The nobility still managed to maintain its position in local regional and national politics for a long time They also bet on (university) education; many of them went to study law Does Godard manage to maintain his position untill the end?“Yes until his death he manages to maintain the estate although his influence and financial position diminishes dramatically The most difficult period begins after the introduction of universal suffrage in 1919 Democratisation as well as the change from a world grafted on class politics to a bureaucratic institutionalised order virtually brought the influential position of the Dutch nobility to a standstill.” “Yet Godard’s influence continued to play out in the village for a long time when in 1913 the new mayor is installed in Amerongen and he does not drive straight to the town hall but first goes for an audience at Amerongen Castle and then rides in Van Aldenburg Bentinck’s carriage to the town hall.” Godard’s financial position declines further He makes several more attempts to improve it He invests in a butter factory using milk from local farmers The infrastructure in Amerongen is still poor and farmers have to get the milk into the village on carts but competition with growers in the Westland is too fierce He does not undertake any larger initiatives; he is in his seventies by then.” Has Godard van Aldenburg Bentinck fared better than other standees?“That’s hard to say because I haven’t studied all the noble families He certainly managed to hold out for a long time there are also noble families who in the 1930s managed to find a strategy that did keep them financially healthy.” Middachten in De Steeg and Weldam in Markelo – remain in the family to this day or have retained residential rights Amerongen Castle was finally sold by his grandchildren to the Utrecht Castles Foundation in 1977 Zuylestein Castle in neighbouring village Leersum remained outside the sale and is now part of the Twickel foundation.” Do you have an explanation as to why Godard failed to keep Amerongen Castle in the family’s hands for the long term?“That remains tricky Of imperative importance within the family was the Hausgesetz a set of rules originating from the German nobility it stipulated that if the sons were not to be excluded from succession they had to enter into a so-called Standesgemäss and Ebenbürtig (equal ed.) marriage It was painful for Godard that all his children were marrying below their rank which meant they no longer complied with the Hausgesetz of genuine interest in preserving the estate for the family was hardly discernible among Godard’s descendants and an economic strategy was lacking.” What is left of the noble culture now?“It still lives on Economic and political power may have declined but there is still symbolic capital: many people still look up to nobility and assign value to it Illustrative is the request by the local fanfare orchestra in Amerongen co-founded with the support of Godard Bentinck for the descendants of the house of Amerongen to become patrons of the society It shows that nobility still carries a symbolic capital.” Leo van Putten will receive his doctorate on Friday 10 January at 11.00 on his thesis The Last Lord of Amerongen a European nobleman in a Dutch village community The defence will take place in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam Godard Count van Aldenburg Bentinck (1857-1940) the biggest issue facing the business events industry is without question We need to make government and other sectors of our society more conscious of the business events sector and the significant contribution our members collectively make to the economy and to the growth of other industries worked out the value of business events many years ago but we still have a way to go in Australia we need action on a number of fronts.  At the grass roots meeting and event organisers need to be active players in the industry working cohesively through their relevant industry bodies to raise awareness of the value of business events BECA is tackling the issue by forming an alliance with the Tourism & Transport Forum to ramp up the profile of the industry and garner more government support Advocacy hasn’t really been part of BECA’s brief in the past but we see it as a key to the industry’s future We need to raise the profile of the industry through advocacy and research and ensure that the policymakers understand how business events can help the government achieve economic and other strategic objectives The tourism and business events industries have a symbiotic relationship although our goals are not as simple as funding Tourism infrastructure such as hotels and transport systems support business events so we need government policy which understands this relationship it’s important for the industry to keep thinking ahead.  We’ve seen an expansion of meeting infrastructure around Australia in recent years but the biggest mistake we could make is to sit on our hands and assume we have nothing more to do We have to start thinking about the future needs of the industry and begin planning for 2020 and beyond otherwise we’re going to find ourselves back in the same spot Suzan van Amerongen is a Research Fellow at the Boston University CTE Center studying under Director of Clinical Research Robert Stern She is the first author of the new paper “Severe CTE and TDP-43 pathology in a former professional soccer player with dementia: a clinicopathological case report and review of the literature” that was published on May 10 This case study describes a Dutch former soccer player diagnosed during life with young-onset dementia a post-mortem analysis showed “severe phosphorylated tau (p-tau) abnormalities fulfilling the neuropathological criteria for high-stage CTE.” Her paper also addresses the lack of CTE research in soccer players and discusses that being able to diagnose CTE in life would increase the amount of research done on soccer players at all levels I asked van Amerongen about her paper and research and how she began working with the BU CTE Center from another continent Some people might get a bit confused since you are living in Europe Could you explain your professional relationship with the BU CTE Center I have been working as a medical doctor at the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam where I am also following a PhD program on the long-term consequences of repetitive head impacts Stern offered me a position as a research fellow for one year at the CTE Center after finishing this research fellowship – which will be in September – I have one more year to finish my PhD back in the Netherlands and I hope to start a residency in neurology It is both a passion as well as a personal story all those topics on neurology and the brain attracted me a lot This was confirmed after doing my rotation at the neurology department I really felt that neurology would become my new career path I felt like it was too close and emotional We often felt very helpless during this period Because the thing with most of the neurological diseases is that you are not able to cure them or there is no treatment for it Then that feeling kind of transferred into something like ‘Okay but if I am at least able to give people a feeling that I can mean something or I can support or give him at least some hope and support What made you choose to write a paper on this particular case when this patient visited the memory clinic in Amsterdam This patient was actually the inspiration to set up a study to investigate individuals at risk for CTE When I joined the Center in 2020 to work for this study I was very touched but also became curious and interested What is actually going on in his brain and is this associated with CTE the family decided to donate his brain to our center we looked into it very thoroughly and believed he had a lot of very interesting pathology We felt that this is so important for the field where CTE hasn’t been a big topic yet We also collected a lot of very interesting clinical data over the years CTE in soccer players hasn’t been reported to the extent it has in American football we felt the urgency to present these findings highlight the importance of brain donation and the importance of a good diagnostic process you ruled out other neurodegenerative diseases Could you walk me through how you ruled out those diseases the clinical picture fit well with Alzheimer’s disease especially decline in memory and executive functioning We also found brain atrophy on the MRI scan that could fit Alzheimer’s disease we have good diagnostic tools to detect the Alzheimer protein (‘amyloid’) we investigated this with both a specific brain scan (PET scan) and by testing cerebrospinal fluid so we could basically rule out Alzheimer’s disease because not all other neurodegenerative diseases have such accurate diagnostic tools You try to combine the clinical history with findings from tests and brain scans We cannot always make a definite diagnosis during life but often which disease is the most likely the most important one is asking about a history of repetitive head impacts you talk about the underrepresentation of soccer players in CTE research One of the most important goals was to increase awareness of CTE in soccer Starting with the publication of these kinds of cases gives inspiration and guidance to build up bigger cohorts even though you cannot diagnose CTE during life it can be very helpful to rule out other diseases with the possible biomarkers we have there seem to be other processes going on in the brain which might be related to repetitive head impacts You had said that you are going into residency for neurology after you finish your PhD what type of research would you want to do in the future to be able to do my residency and continue CTE research I am mainly focusing on clinical research with athletes exposed to repetitive head impacts I hope that brain donations will increase in the Netherlands so I can also work on the correlation between clinical and pathological findings our cohort in Amsterdam contains over 60 participants but I hope to expand this to be able to help all these participants with their questions and worries about brain damage and to contribute to all the research questions that are remaining If you would like to read the full paper “Severe CTE and TDP-43 pathology in a former professional soccer player with dementia: a clinicopathological case report and review of the New Police Chief Robert Tracy and Mayor Mike Purzycki wanted an arrest – especially because no one had been charged in the city's eight prior shootings of juveniles this year At a prayer vigil the day after the shooting we will have that person in custody or individuals in custody very shortly." the Mayor's Office announced police had charged 41-year-old Chelsea Outlaw with first-degree attempted murder and other charges arrest notifications are sent to the media by city police Outlaw is no longer believed to be the shooter Instead of shooting a boy in the 700 block of E Outlaw and his own child were riding DART buses and doing errands Van Amerongen requested surveillance video from several locations she said would prove Outlaw's alibi STORY: Charges dropped for man accused of shooting 6-year-old boy STORY: 6-year-old shot in head in Wilmington "I get the politics of it," said van Amerongen who is head of the public defender's homicide unit "I get that when a 6-year-old is shot that people want justice But the problem is if they go and grab the wrong person then this is the kind of thing that can happen "That is what I find scary as a defense attorney." the city sent out another announcement – this time saying that Outlaw's charges were dismissed based on "uncovered evidence." Neither Wilmington police nor the Delaware Department of Justice would elaborate Wednesday on what that evidence was or what led to the mistaken arrest The News Journal was able to piece together details about the surveillance video that could explain why Outlaw was released The shooting occurred in the early afternoon of June 6 when Jashawn Banner was being driven to his father's house The SUV he was riding in stopped for a pedestrian crossing the street near East Sixth and Spruce streets and a passenger leaned out the window and began firing at the pedestrian police thought the boy's mother had been shot but they later said the injury to her left arm was caused by shattered debris created by the bullets The young boy remains in critical condition at Nemours/A.I The shooting angered many in the community who called for an end to the escalating gun violence One hundred people have been shot in Wilmington so far this year Police and prosecutors often find it hard to get convictions in these shootings because of a "don't snitch" rule that permeates the streets an unnamed witness came forward and described the shooter as a brown-skinned male with golden hair and freckles investigators pulled a photo of Chelsea Outlaw of Minquadale, who had a criminal history dating back to the mid-1990s that included traffic violations drug charges and an escape from a prison work center Police entered Outlaw's photo into a lineup for the witness to look at The witness identified Outlaw as the shooter and he was arrested last Thursday afternoon by federal and local police officers He was transported to prison where he stayed for nearly a week in default of $2 million cash bail until his preliminary hearing scheduled for June 19 Van Amerongen said Outlaw's family came to her office Tuesday in a "panic state." They were concerned surveillance video that would exonerate Outlaw would be destroyed because many surveillance systems do not store video for long periods of time In the forefront of van Amerongen's mind was a similar case in which the state dropped murder charges for her client in May In that case, 35-year-old Michael Rivera was set to go to trial on charges that he killed his mother and set fire to the Harbor House Apartments in Claymont The state dropped the charges after they realized that New Castle County police did not cross-check Rivera's possible alibi before surveillance video from the night of the slaying was destroyed "I didn't want to go through that again," she said Van Amerongen said Outlaw's girlfriend told police about his alibi but she was unsure of whether the police were working to obtain the surveillance footage So she and an investigator drafted subpoenas for six locations a gas station and a store where Outlaw had made a purchase The subpoenas became moot when state prosecutors filed Tuesday a nolle prosequi — a legal term used to describe the abandoning of charges in a criminal case and I do hope they find the person responsible that Chelsea was released," van Amerongen said Vaughn Correctional Center on Tuesday night He and his family would not talk about the ordeal on Wednesday told The News Journal from the prison parking lot Tuesday night that she was ecstatic "I feel blessed to be able to pick him up and see him again," she said State and city officials gave little details Wednesday about the reason for the release A statement from Purzycki and Tracy said only that the investigation has developed new leads with other possible suspects The Mayor’s Office rarely makes announcements about arrests or the dropping of criminal charges When the city released Outlaw’s arrest information on Thursday all further questions were deferred to the Police Department The same protocol was followed Tuesday night with the city and Police Department’s joint statement which encompasses both the Mayor’s Office and the Police Department will review who will release these announcements on a case-by-case basis “The city is the police,” he said Yet every other arrest announcement under Purzycki has come from the Police Department including the killing of 64-year-old store clerk Santanu Muhuri earlier this year Police charged 14-year-old Jakevis Ellington and 22-year-old Devonte Dorsett with the robbery and subsequent struggle over $20 at the Lancaster Market Purzycki has offered statements regarding some of the city’s violent incidents but has not issued arrest announcements regarding any other homicides Van Amerongen said she understands the pressures on police and politicians to solve cases "Yet it still comes down to that we cannot just arrest people without vetting the evidence," she said asked residents with information about the shooting to contact the Wilmington police She said Detective Devon Jones can be reached at (302) 576-6206 Information can also be submitted through the Delaware Crime Stoppers Tipline at (800) TIP-3333 or texted to NIXLE at 888777 Reporter Esteban Parra contributed to this report Contact Jessica Masulli Reyes at (302) 324-2777 jmreyes@delawareonline.com or Twitter @jessicamasulli Contact Brittany Horn at (302) 324-2771 or bhorn@delawareonline.com Charlese Smith could only dream of getting another chance When Smith was sentenced to life in prison at age 23 for burglarizing a home multiple times in a heroin addiction-fueled spree the courts labeled her a habitual offender She was sentenced to life in prison for stealing essentially $30 worth of property she walked out of New Castle Courthouse with the knowledge that she will soon be free "I can't wait to go home," Smith told Superior Court Judge Abigail LeGrow And I'm dedicated to becoming a productive member of society." Just one month shy of her 41st birthday Smith's life sentence was modified under new legislation to roll back the far-reaching effects of Delaware's "three strikes and you're out" law that mandated offenders with three violent felonies serve mandatory life terms that put at least 667 people behind bars for not only murder and assault Seventy-four of those people were sentenced to life in prison Smith went before a judge to ask for a sentence modification for her second-degree burglary conviction The state Attorney General's Office did not oppose her petition to be released from prison which means that after she undergoes processing — likely Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning — she will be released from James T "This is the only case I've had where a person was sentenced to life in prison and didn't kill someone," said Smith's attorney Inmates serving life hope for end to three-strikes law Trans inmate first to begin hormones in prison van Amerongen recounted the day Smith was found guilty of the burglary charge a day that the attorney called the worst of her legal career the life sentence for such a young person didn't seem to fit the crime "This has been more important to me than a lot of things," van Amerongen admitted after the hearing adding that she had barely slept the night before Smith was put behind bars for crimes driven by a heroin addiction. Over the years prompting Charlese — who then went by her birth name of Charles Smith — to steal from neighbors When she was caught by police, Charlese ran from the cops for 17 blocks wearing stiletto boots and silicone breast inserts, she told The News Journal in 2016. Smith, who is transgender, later changed her name in prison and now identifies as a woman She began hormone therapy last year inside James T Vaughn Correctional Center to complete her transition None of those details changed the fact that Smith was sentenced to life in prison under the three-strikes laws which she talked to The News Journal about when state Attorney General Matt Denn's office began discussing an amendment to the law.  "I don't think I deserve the same sentence as someone who has raped an individual or murdered an individual," she said during a 2015 interview in prison "I understand I have broken someone's peace in their home and violated their space Denn — and Delaware lawmakers — agreed.  the state is in the process of reviewing cases under the habitual offender statute that may be eligible for resentencing followed by property crimes and eventually more violent offenses in which a person was injured.  But a change to the law allowed cases like Smith's to be heard sooner if both the state prosecutor's office and the defense attorney agreed.  11 sentences have been reviewed and modified through petitions under the amended statute.  "You want to see justice done and the right thing happen," Denn said after the hearing Tuesday So it's important to go back and have the opportunity to make it right." Family and friends who showed up in support of Smith felt similarly calling it a day they awaited for too long But one important person was missing among the pews — Smith's mother She died in June after years of hoping her daughter might make it out of prison.  "She fought for 17 years to get me out of jail Tears rolled down the face of Smith's aunt who cared for Smith's mother in the past few years and now will take in Charlese when she is released from prison The court recommended Smith be under home confinement for part of her step-down from incarceration at Vaughn "He's gonna make it," Moore said repeatedly She plans to welcome Smith home with fried potatoes graduated high school and became a skilled hairdresser while in prison — has big dreams She plans to work in landscaping until she can afford cosmetology school She wants to start a family and have children someday "I want to show young trans that they can make it," she said Six more rape charges filed against former difficult) software in the world I was preparing to have a pop at the Vancouver contest and had decided to take a break from writing browser fuzzers to try something different: VirtualBox Virtualization is an incredibly interesting target The complexity involved in both emulating hardware devices and passing data safely to real hardware is astounding And as the mantra goes: where there is complexity it was a safe bet to target an emulated component network hardware emulation seemed like the right (and usual) route to go I started with a default component: the NAT emulation code in /src/VBox/Devices/Network/DrvNAT.cpp so there was no specific methodical approach to this other than scrolling through the file and reading various parts The function used for sending packets from the guest to the network contained a separate code path for Generic Segmentation Offload (GSO) frames and was using memcpy to combine pieces of data The next question was of course “How much of this can I control?” and after going through various code paths and writing a simple Python-based constraint solver for all the limiting factors the answer was “More than I expected” when using the Paravirtualization Network device called VirtIO An alternative to fully emulating a device is to use paravirtualization in which the guest is entirely unaware that it is a guest paravirtualization has the guest install drivers that are aware that they are running in a guest machine in order to work with the host to transfer data in a much faster and more efficient manner VirtIO is an interface that can be used to develop paravirtualized drivers. One such driver is virtio-net which comes with the Linux source and is used for networking like a number of other virtualization software Similarly to the e1000 VirtIO networking works by using ring buffers to transfer data between the guest and the host (In this case called Virtqueues VirtIO doesn’t use a single ring with head and tail registers for transmitting but instead uses three separate arrays: When the guest wishes to send packets to the network adds the index of this descriptor to the Available ring and then increments the Available Index pointer: the guest ‘kicks’ the host by writing the VQueue index to the Queue Notify register This triggers the host to begin handling descriptors in the available ring it is added to the Used ring and the Used Index is incremented: it’s important to understand the problem that it solves for network cards Originally the CPU would handle all of the heavy lifting when calculating transport layer checksums or segmenting them into smaller ethernet packet sizes Since this process can be quite slow when dealing with a lot of outgoing network traffic hardware manufacturers started implementing offloading for these operations thus removing the strain on the operating system this meant that instead of the OS having to pass a number of much smaller packets through the network stack It was noticed that this optimization could be applied to other protocols (beyond TCP and UDP) without the need of hardware support by delaying segmentation until just before the network driver receives the message the driver is aware that it is in a guest machine and so GSO can be applied between the guest and host GSO is implemented in VirtIO by adding a context descriptor header to the start of the network buffer This header can be seen in the following struct: The VirtIO header can be thought of as a similar concept to the Context Descriptor in e1000 the parameters are verified for some level of validity in vnetR3ReadHeader Then the function vnetR3SetupGsoCtx is used to fill the standard GSO struct used by VirtualBox across all network devices: the VirtIO code creates a scatter-gatherer to assemble the frame from the various descriptors: The frame is passed to the NAT code along with the new GSO structure reaching the point that drew my interest originally it gets the full ethernet packet and passes it to Slirp (a library for TCP/IP emulation) as an mbuf message VirtualBox allocates a new mbuf message and copies the packet to it The allocation function takes a size and picks the next largest allocation size from three distinct buckets: If the supplied size is larger than MJUM16BYTES this assertion is only compiled when the RT_STRICT macro is used This means that execution will continue after this assertion is hit resulting in a bucket size of 0x800 being selected for the allocation this results in a heap overflow when the user data is copied into the mbuf a function called PDMNetGsoIsValid is used which verifies whether the GSO parameters supplied by the guest are valid whenever it is used it is placed in an assertion assertions like these are not compiled in the release build This results in invalid GSO parameters being allowed; a miscalculation can be caused for the size given to slirp_ext_m_get making it less than the total copied amount by the memcpy in the for-loop my parameters for the calculation of pGso->cbHdrsTotal + pGso->cbMaxSeg used for cbMin resulted in an allocation of 0x4000 bytes but the calculation for cbPayload resulted in a memcpy call for 0x4065 bytes The title of this post makes it seem like GSO is the only vulnerable offload mechanism in place here; however another offload mechanism is vulnerable too: Checksum Offload Checksum offloading can be applied to various protocols that have checksums in their message headers VirtualBox supports this for both TCP and UDP the GSO frame needs to have the first bit of the u8Flags member set to indicate that the checksum offload is required this bit must always be set since it cannot handle GSO without performing the checksum offload When VirtualBox handles UDP packets with GSO it can end up in the function PDMNetGsoCarveSegmentQD in certain circumstances: The function pdmNetGsoUpdateUdpHdrUfo uses the offHdr2 to indicate where the UDP header is in the packet structure Eventually this leads to a function called RTNetUDPChecksum: the uh_ulen property is completely trusted without any validation which results in either a size that is outside of the bounds of the buffer or an integer underflow from the subtraction of sizeof(*pUdpHdr) rtNetIPv4AddDataChecksum receives both the size value and the packet header pointer and proceeds to calculate the checksum: adding large amounts of out of bounds data together may not seem particularly interesting if the attacker is able to re-allocate the same heap location for consecutive UDP packets with the UDP size parameter being added two bytes at a time it is possible to calculate the difference in each checksum and disclose the out of bounds data it’s also possible to use this vulnerability to cause a denial-of-service against other VMs in the network: Got another Virtualbox vuln fixed (CVE-2021-2442) Works as both an OOB read in the host process, as well as an integer underflow. In some instances, it can also be used to remotely DoS other Virtualbox VMs! pic.twitter.com/Ir9YQgdZQ7 — maxpl0it (@maxpl0it) August 1, 2021 and jurisdictions merge in the melting pot of the digital domain the perils of the threat ecosystem become unparalleled Crimeware families achieve an unparalleled level of technical sophistication APT groups are competing in fully-fledged cyber warfare while once decentralized and scattered threat actors are forming adamant alliances of operating as elite corporate espionage teams Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Sign In Subscribe Now Working as a past-life regression therapist in Holland Henri van Amerongen thought he had seen it all — that was until he attended his first family dynamics workshop The workshops have a different name in Holland but essentially take the energy from a person or animal and transpose it into someone else (or wooden mannequins) enabling thoughts and feelings of others to come to the forefront and solve all kinds of issues the man behind Dare 2b U Academy which hosts the Dynamics workshops relocated to Parksville within the last couple of years and will be holding a number of introductory sessions in the area in the coming weeks 27 at the Parksville Pharmasave Conference Room and deals with the underlying fear and anxiety felt by immigrants Family Dynamics takes place March 19 at the same location and Animal Dynamics will happen at Sunrise Ridge Resort March 26 Although van Amerongen said it is a popular tool in Europe the technique is fairly undiscovered here in North America “You have to see it to believe it,” he said you have to get people out of their head and into their body.” Van Amerongen performed the workshops in Holland for 16 years and continues to teach the technique to others Sometimes people have a sadness or pain that they can’t put their finger on and often pain is inherited from parents or grandparents and is anchored in people’s subconscious His technique can help heal and remove feelings that have been blocking success and happiness for years he said.  It’s about energy and connecting and results can become apparent within 15 minutes sometimes Van Amerongen has been equally successful over the years helping animals where he figured out what had an older dog confined to a bed for three weeks “The next day the dog was running around and was adopted in 2 days,” he said To check out one of van Amerongen’s introductory sessions in Parksville sign up by filling out the form at www.dare2bu.ca or call 250-586-8822 Dialogue and debate are integral to a free society and we welcome and encourage you to share your views on the issues of the day. The company has 7,700 employees worldwide. At the end of 2018, it had 648 employees at three facilities in Mexico, including the Ocotlán plant. “This was an extremely difficult decision given the impact to our employees and the local community, and we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible,” van Amerogen said. “Today’s action is not a reflection of the quality of work performed by our employees at the Ocotlán site." The device appeared in the 2019 Pwn2Own conference as well as being named as a target in Pwn2Own Austin 2021 He came across the NetUSB kernel module while sifting through various paths through various binaries where he saw something fishy: “As it turned out this module was listening on TCP port 20005 on the IP 0.0.0.0,” Van Amerongen explained “Provided there were no firewall rules in place to block it that would mean it was listening on the WAN as well as the LAN Who wouldn’t love a remote kernel bug?” He does love to pop kernels: In November, Van Amerongen wrote up a bug (CVE-2021-43267) that he discovered in a Transparent Inter Process Communication (TIPC) message type that allows Linux nodes to send cryptographic keys to each other. The critical heap-overflow security vulnerability in the Linux kernel could have allowed local exploitation and RCE The USB connection process starts with a handshake between the PC and router that initializes communication: a handshake that SentinelOne depicted in the graphic below The handshake that initializes communication What comes next after the handshake is a command-parsing while-loop The code that takes a command number and routes the message to the appropriate SoftwareBus function “SoftwareBus_fillBuf acts in a similar way to recv by taking both a buffer and its size filling the buffer with data read from the socket,” Van Amerongen wrote The vulnerable chunk of code in the kernel module is triggered when the command 0x805f reaches the following code in the function SoftwareBus_dispatchNormalEPMsgOut: The vulnerable segment of code in the kernel module “Four bytes are fetched from the remote PC,” the researcher continued “The number 0x11 is added to it and then used as a size value in kmalloc Since this supplied size isn’t validated the addition of the 0x11 can result in an integer overflow a size of 0xffffffff would result in 0x10 after 0x11 has been added to it.” This allocated region is then used and written to through both dereferencing and through the SoftwareBus_fillBuf function Out-of-bounds writes taking place on the small allocated region “Looking at the final call to SoftwareBus_fillBuf the supplied size is used as a maximum value to read from the remote socket,” Van Amerongen said the size 0xffffffff would be used here (not the overflown value) as the size sent to recv.” SentinelOne sent a suggested mitigation strategy This integer overflow check should be performed before allocating memory with user supplied sizes There are a number of factors that play into the feasibility of exploiting this bug Size that can be allocated: The minimum size that can be allocated is 0x0 “That means that the allocated object will always be in the kmalloc-32 slab of the kernel heap,” Van Amerongen noted The amount of control over the overflow itself: The attacker controls the data being received over the socket “Since a size of 0xffffffff is not realistically exploitable on a 32-bit system it’s necessary to take a look at how SoftwareBus_fillBuf actually works,” the  researcher explained “Underneath this function is the standard socket recv function That means that the size supplied is only used as a maximum receive size and not a strict amount Ease of laying out the kernel heap for the overflow: “Many exploits require the use of heap holes in order to make sure that the vulnerable heap structure will be placed before the object that will be overwritten,” Van Amerongen added there’s a timeout of 16 seconds on the socket for receiving data meaning the struct can be overflown up to 16 seconds after it is allocated This removes the need to create a heap hole.” Constraints regarding which target structures could be overwritten:  Bottom line: It’s not a trivial task to write an exploit for this vulnerability but SentinelOne doesn’t think it’s impossible “This vulnerability affects millions of devices around the world and in some instances may be completely remotely accessible,” Van Amerongen stressed Given that the vulnerability is in a third-party component licensed to various router vendors that means the only fix is a firmware update rolling out from each specific vendor – if it’s even available SentinelLabs began the disclosure process on Sept. 9, and the patch was sent to all vendors on Oct. 4. On Dec. 14, Netgear had released fixed firmware for its R6700v3 device (version 1.0.4.122). And on Dec. 20, Netgear released an advisory about the flaw with patches for D7800 models (firmware version 1.0.1.68) and R6400v2 routers (fixed in firmware version 1.0.4.122) All of the other vendors affected by the NetUSB bug are aware of the vulnerability and have either fixed it or in the process of fixing it Long story short: Router owners should be on the lookout for a firmware update the mitigation listed above is the way to go “While we are not going to release any exploits for it there is a chance that one may become public in the future despite the rather significant complexity involved in developing one,” he said “We recommend that all users follow the remediation information above in order to reduce any potential risk.” Lockbit is by far this summer’s most prolific clothing items new homes—eliminating textile waste while helping community members update their wardrobes and save money Lisa Amerongen has always been a big fan of vintage clothing and swaps—but not of the fashion industry’s wasteful and unethical practices and hosted the first edition of The Good Swap at The Centre for Social Innovation in downtown Toronto.  It turned out the timing was right: people were excited to be back in the world were looking for ways to green their wardrobes and the event sold out,” Amerongen says they’ve hosted 26 events that have been attended by over 1550 individuals The premise of the swaps is simple: attendees of all genders and ages can bring up to 10 items of preloved clothing and accessories in good condition to the swap they can browse through the donated clothes and take home some items they love “If you want to make a positive change swapping is a great way to start,” says Amerongen “All the dopamine without the dilemma!”  Swapping is an example of a circular economy a closed-loop system that leads us to use what we already have “People are consciously – or unconsciously – influenced by a market-driven bias that claims “new is best.” We’re fed advertisements constantly We’re made to feel that ownership and upgrades are essential to our personhood,” Amerongen says if you’ve bought into the “new is best” paradigm swapping won’t feel like an acceptable option.” and more people are realizing the negative impacts of their shopping habits on the environment and garment workers—and their wallets “People realize that the need to buy new items is entirely manufactured by global marketing and sales teams,” she says “There are so many ways to curate your style without overconsuming.” Amerongen tells us that word-of-mouth alone has been huge in spreading the word about The Good Swap she’s established a devoted community dedicated to conscious clothing consumption judgment-free atmosphere where people are free to experience the joy of clothes swapping.   “It’s a lively buzz of people browsing With their second-anniversary swap happening on March 23 Amerongen is excited to keep hosting clothing swaps in the GTA and beyond “I hope we continue to bring new life to the clothes that are languishing in the back of your – yes and reduce textile waste in the city.” Wondering how you can take steps towards more conscious clothing
