and will return to the neighbourhood after its offices on Foppingadreef have been renovated
‘Zuidoost Week’ was an opportunity to once again stress the importance of connecting with local residents
ABN AMRO Social Point Amsterdam Zuidoost hit the road to get a feel for the atmosphere
Zuidoost Week 2024 took place from 27 May to 2 June
It was organised jointly by parties including the City of Amsterdam
residents of Zuidoost and the Ministry of the Interior
The programme was compiled on the basis of input from local residents
and anyone else involved with the Zuidoost Master Plan
Over 120 initiators from the neighbourhood took part in activities revolving around meeting each other and working together
In the Zuidoost Master Plan and underlying partner covenant
the City of Amsterdam and other partners (including ABN AMRO)
have agreed to join forces to work towards making Amsterdam-Zuidoost inclusive and future-proof
One of the ways the bank is doing this is by providing free training courses and workshops in the areas of financial resilience
the Zuidoost city office on Anton de Komplein was packed with policy staff and local initiators
Zuidoost was well represented with people from various backgrounds
ABN AMRO hopes that moving its head office from the Zuidas to Amsterdam Zuidoost will enable the bank to work more closely with the local community and respond to the needs of local residents
Allan Kartodikromo (Equal Opportunities & D&I Enabler at ABN AMRO) was present at this evening as a panel member during the discussion between policy staff and residents
and Allan received some probing questions about how a big bank intended to integrate into the neighbourhood
People expressed doubts about whether the business community and ‘the government’ were capable of merging with initiatives being set up in Zuidoost
As the residents put it: “All these initiatives are built on a sense of purpose for the neighbourhood
intransigent working methods and tends to ‘look down from above’.”
Allan acknowledged the sentiment and replied: “Our aim is to understand the feelings in the neighbourhood
recognise the importance of these feelings and internalise them within our organisation.” He realises that this process will take time and patience
but things will only structurally change if this wish is mutual
So the community must also be receptive to ABN AMRO
The refrain of the evening was: no gain without pain
Social Point is an ABN AMRO programme through which the bank puts its knowledge
experience and resources in the areas of financial resilience
life skills and entrepreneurship to work for people who have fewer opportunities in society
The first Social Point was launched in Amsterdam-Zuidoost in 2021
It forms a base from which ABN AMRO colleagues give training courses and workshops to local residents
and where the bank provides placement and training places

The police found the body of a man in an apartment on Berthold Brechtstraat in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Wednesday
neighbors had already reported to housing corporation Eigen Haard that they hadn’t seen the man in a while
Early in 2023, neighbors reported that they hadn’t seen the man in a while and thought he might be abroad, a spokesperson for Eigen Haard told Parool
“That is not strange and the rent was still being paid,” the spokesperson said
In September this year, Eigen Haard received another report from a neighbor, again saying that they hadn’t seen the man in a long time. The housing corporation asked the municipality to see if they could track down the man in the country where he was believed to be, an Eigen Haard spokesperson told AT5
so Eigen Haard asked the police to go check the man’s home this week
The police went to check the home on Wednesday and found a deceased man inside
it would have been a signal that was immediately visible.” The spokesperson also stressed that the reports were not about smells or pests
but about the suspicion that the resident was no longer in the Netherlands
Locals are shocked and wonder how the man could have been lying dead in his home for so long without anyone noticing
Parool spoke to several residents of the apartment building
They noticed no smells or vermin around the home
the man led a very secluded life and had few contacts
I find it scary,” one local told the newspaper
You have to look out for each other a little bit.”
Another neighbor told the Telegraaf that it concerns an older Surinamese man. “I think I haven’t seen him for over a year,” he said. It’s not really a “we know each other” neighborhood, he added. Still, he wonders how it is possible that no one missed this man. “You would think that the immediate neighbors would have noticed.”
This is “a sad case,” an Eigen Haard spokesperson told the Telegraaf. “But it does show that loneliness is a major problem that needs to be addressed. People who have few contacts and lead a very solitary life often literally and figuratively disappear from the radar.”

2024 Photo: DutchNews.nlA man whose body was discovered at a flat in Amsterdam Zuidoost is thought to have died some years ago
despite neighbours’ reporting him missing to the housing corporation
Neighbours sounded the alert in January 2023 because they had not seen the elderly Surinamese man
“I used to see him around but it must have been over a year since I saw him last,” neighbour Elvis told the Telegraaf
The Eigen Haard housing corporation said the report had not been over concerns for the man’s wellbeing
“It was thought he had gone away on holiday or was abroad
The rent was always paid so we didn’t feel there was any cause for alarm,” spokesman Wim de Waard told the paper
another report last month prompted Eigen Haard to involve the police who found the man’s body
Police said he had died of natural causes and that an investigation was underway
De Waard said the fact the man was not missed is a “mystery” but showed that loneliness is a big problem and more should be done to help people who isolate themselves
Last month the bodies of a mother and son were found in Amsterdam West
Like the man in Zuidoost they had few contacts with others

Two suspects reportedly fled on a motor scooter
This incident also remains under investigation
The recent shootings have reignited concerns about public safety and crime in Amsterdam
The political party Denk has called for a debate with the mayor
“Entrepreneurs in Amsterdam are increasingly facing severe consequences due to crime,” said Denk in a statement
They urged the municipality to adopt more equitable and humane measures to protect businesses and residents
Moving to Amsterdam but not sure where to live
Find out which part of the city is right for you with our guide on where to live in Amsterdam
By Shanthy Milne
It’s no surprise that Amsterdam remains so popular for those seeking a new life abroad
It’s one of Europe’s most beautiful cities; full of life
The city is big enough to offer plentiful culture and entertainment whilst retaining pockets of tranquility and a laid-back pace of life
it really is a city that has something for everyone
Amsterdam is home to people of over 180 nationalities making it one of the most diverse cities in the world
This is reflected in the vibrancy of its seven districts
To help newcomers get to grips with Amsterdam and decide which area suits them best
we take a look at what each district can offer for you
Simplify finding a home abroad with HousingAnywhere
Their easy-to-use platform lets landlords and tenants connect

Originally founded as a 13th-century fishing village around a dam on the Amstel River (hence the name)
breathing museum that celebrates life on and around the water
It’s not just bikes that are welcome in Amsterdam. The Dutch pride themselves on their tolerance, but the capital goes one step further, welcoming and celebrating diversity. Unsurprisingly, it’s ranked the second most LGBTQ-friendly city in the world
Amsterdam is a popular destination for expats and students. Alongside the demand for housing from the local population, this makes for a highly competitive property market. It can be a challenge to find the perfect home in Amsterdam
There are a number of expat-friendly estate agents (makelaars). Through the MVA (professional association of expat brokers in Amsterdam)
expats can identify certified estate agents with expertise in housing internationals in the city
Should you choose to search for housing yourself
you can find up-to-date rental listings throughout the Netherlands on websites like:
Amsterdam is a city of vertical living, embodied by its iconic canal-side townhouses which are typically four stories high. On average, Amsterdammers have around 49 square meters of living space – well below the national average of 65m2
Compact living is embraced by Amsterdammers
it’s also possible to find larger apartments spanning multiple floors
and many ground-floor properties have small gardens
Depending on the location of your apartment
you may even have access to a shared courtyard garden
Anyone planning on staying in Amsterdam long-term may benefit from purchasing a property
There is a lot of competition for properties and in most instances
you will need to bid above the asking price
Some lenders might also require you to take out homeowners’ insurance
which you can find through providers such as
there are tax incentives and long-term benefits attached to owning your own property in Amsterdam
Officially, Amsterdam is divided into seven districts
each with its own particular characteristics and charm
Fanning out from Centraal Station and encompassing Amsterdam’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage canal belt
Amsterdam Centrum is the beating heart of the city
Its maze of canals and winding streets draws tourists from all over the world
But if you turn your gaze upwards you will see that it is also home to many Amsterdammers
Some of Amsterdam’s most charming (and crooked!) homes can be found in this neighborhood
but if you’re lucky you may find a top-floor apartment with magical views across the rooftops
The old center of De Wallen is the busiest area of Amsterdam and its 24-hour economy means it’s hard to escape the noise here
Despite the constant hum of tourist activity
residents of De Wallen will be rewarded with the historic charm of its tree-lined canals and picturesque townhouses
families may prefer Centrum’s outer neighborhoods where tourist activity is less intense
For those seeking a mix of sophistication, history, and culture, the Canal Belt has it all. As one might expect from a UNESCO World Heritage Site
the price tags are justified by picture-perfect canal views
This neighborhood is popular with expats looking for a typically Dutch slice of Amsterdam
The Canal Belt is a stone’s throw from the city’s most famous sights and boasts plenty of chic cafes and eateries
Further to the west lies the bohemian Jordaan
the most famous of Amsterdam’s neighborhoods
The narrow streets are lined with independent shops and hip cafes
Its artistic and welcoming feel makes it popular with families and young people alike
The Jordaan has lots of playgrounds tucked into its crisscrossing streets and is close to the open green spaces of Westerpark
On the east of the Centrum lies the Jodenbuurt
the historic Jewish neighborhood of Amsterdam
The area is now a vibrant Jewish cultural quarter with many museums and cultural centers
Kalverstraat, the city’s main shopping street winds its way through the heart of the Centrum. Independent boutiques and craft stores can also be found tucked away throughout the Centrum, particularly around De 9 Straatjes (the nine streets)
Whatever your tastes or interests, from music and art, to theatres, nightlife, and museums, Centrum has something for everyone. It’s home to some of Amsterdam’s most important cultural sites, including the Anne Frank Museum
Despite its small size, there are two hospitals (in Dutch) located within the Centrum area and numerous schools
One thing the Centrum does not easily accommodate is cars
Limited space means there is a long waiting list for permits (sometimes several years)
properties in the Centrum tend to be amongst the smallest in the city
and Jewish Quarter may offer a little more space than in De Wallen
you will certainly get more bang for your buck beyond the Jordaan and outside of the Centrum area
Many small businesses and creative start-ups are based in the Centrum. There are lots of co-working spaces and the city has a good support system for entrepreneurs and businesses in their early stages
There are also lots of job opportunities in the centrum, particularly in retail, catering, and hospitality. The iAmsterdam job search portal lists jobs for English speakers
It’s also worth walking around the neighborhood as many restaurants and independent stores post job vacancies in their windows
Amsterdam Centrum is the cultural and historic heart of the city
It offers the postcard-perfect experience of Amsterdam and even the constant throng of tourists can’t detract from its wow factor
Take a short (free) ferry ride across the water from Centraal Station and you will find yourself in Amsterdam Noord
creative area of experimental art and modern living centered on the former industrial areas along the IJ
there are plenty of open rural areas further out that are dotted with picturesque villages
All this gives Amsterdam-Noord a truly unique feel. The repurposed dockyard area is a hub of cultural activity with exciting events
This area is at the forefront of eco and experimental living and is also home to a number of start-ups and creative enterprises
visitors can explore exhibitions by international visual artists
Multiple free ferry routes run across the IJ, making it an easy commute to and from Centraal Station and beyond. There are six ferry routes
The most popular one from Centraal Station to Buiksloterweg is so frequent that you rarely need to wait for more than a few minutes to board
It’s possible to take bikes and mopeds on the ferries for easy onward travel
The Centraal Station to Buiksloterweg route also runs through the night
Noord is home to beautiful Dutch family homes in its old fishing villages
There are also lots of newly built houses and apartments in Noord
Prices are more affordable than in the center and surrounding areas
Noord is ideal for those seeking family homes close to the city center
It boasts a wonderful sense of community within each of its village-like areas and also has a prospering cultural scene
Combined with the tranquility of its open spaces and good transport links to the center
you can see why so many expats chose to live here
Oost is one of the city’s most vibrant and ethnically diverse districts
along the Eastern Docklands and its chic waterside apartments towards the multicultural Indische buurt
Its many different communities give Oost an eclectic feel
More and more hip bars and restaurants are popping up in Oost and the diversity of cultural activity and events on offer draw a young
There are a number of parks and green spaces
which alongside good schools and slightly more spacious homes
Oost has historically been a green refuge for the city of Amsterdam. Amsterdam’s oldest park can be found in Oost. It’s also home to ARTIS
In contrast to the pricier Watergraafsmeer and Oosterpark neighborhoods
Dapperbuurt and Indische buurt were built for the working classes
you’ll find the streets here lined with Turkish bakeries
an increasingly younger demographic has also brought trendy bars
The growth of new communities in Oost is ongoing on its newly formed islands. The newest of these is IJburg
These islands are home to some of Amsterdam’s most prized real estate – and there are more in the pipeline
Cultural hotspots in Oost include gems like NedPhO-Koepel, home of the Netherlands Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras; Framer Framed, where contemporary art meets progressive debate and Mezrab where storytelling and spoken word are brought to life
The OLVG hospital has one of its largest sites in Amsterdam Oost and the area is well set up for families with good schools and playgrounds
Two of Amsterdam’s university campuses are located in the district
resulting in a young demographic and numerous facilities
Oost is well-connected to the rest of the city by public transport
Services to the east of the Netherlands run from Amstel and Science Park stations
but cycling remains the most popular form of transport
there are traditional townhouse apartments
there are also modern apartment buildings offering more spacious accommodation
If you’re lucky you may even find yourself overlooking the zoo
Further east towards Dapperbuurt and Indische buurt the housing gets more affordable
Most of the accommodation in this area was built as social housing
though the demographic now is more diverse
traditional Dutch-style homes offer more space for families
The islands offer modern apartments and newly built houses
Many are modern reimaginings of traditional Amsterdam homes with their own unique appeal
Many residents of Oost also opt to live in houseboats on the water itself
Oost is best for those who wish to live in a culturally diverse part of the city with plentiful parks
Its proximity to open water areas also makes it ideal for fans of watersports
Zuidoost may be the Amsterdam district most overlooked by expats
It may be a far cry from Amsterdam’s iconic canals and townhouses
Zuidoost is a cultural melting pot with a lot to offer
Everything in the district is large-scale, from its high-rise apartments and megastores through to the gigantic Johan Cruijff ArenA, home of Amsterdam’s celebrated football team, Ajax
Around the stadium is a large entertainment complex of restaurants and shops
the district also offers vast green spaces and picturesque waterways
born in the 1950s and 1960s in response to a need for more housing in Amsterdam
This need resulted in the tall high-rises that populate the district
Within the district are the notable residential neighborhoods
Bijlmermeer (also called Bijlmer) and Gein
The Bijlmer became home to a large Surinamese community when the country gained independence in 1974
The eclectic backgrounds of its residents, combined with the large event spaces located in Zuid-Oost have made the district a hotbed of cultural activity. The highlight is the annual Kwaku Festival with live performances
Food lovers will enjoy living in close proximity to the World of Food where 25 kitchens offer international cuisines from all over the globe
Cycling from Zuidoost into the center of Amsterdam takes about 45 minutes to an hour
There is ample space for parking and a lot of people living in Zuidoost travel by car
Most residents in the district live in high-rise apartments. Housing in Zuidoost is cheaper than in other districts in the city, particularly the further out from the center you live. However, the area around the Johan Cruijff ArenA is a little more expensive
Amsterdam Zuid is perhaps the most elegant and bourgeois district of the city
which is home to Amsterdam’s most iconic museums
Zuid also takes in the once working-class De Pijp neighborhood
that’s now one of the city’s coolest areas
On the western side of the district beyond the southern end of Vondelpark
the area is characterized by wide boulevards and the distinctive staircases of its houses
It’s a very popular neighborhood with expat families
Zuid is the most geared toward expat families
Most of Amsterdam’s international schools and businesses are located here
Whilst younger internationals may prefer the edginess of De Pijp
family-friendly neighborhoods like Apollobuurt and Rivierenbuurt
offering woodland areas and plenty of activities
the chicest shopping street in Amsterdam where even if your budget won’t allow you to buy
The majority of Amsterdam’s international schools and daycare facilities are located in Zuid. It’s also home to the Zuidas Business District where a number of international companies and institutions are based
International schools in the district include:
Zuid is a mix of grand townhouses, mansions, and distinctive apartment blocks built as part of the 1917 Plan Zuid. These sweeping long blocks are emblematic of the Amsterdamse School of architecture
Prices are more reasonable the further towards the ring road you go
Zuid is perfect for expat families and young internationals
The grandiose streets around Vondelpark and Museumplein might be out of reach for most
but Zuid has a great family-friendly feel that blends with its distinctive heritage
Cozy and welcoming West roughly lies between three of Amsterdam’s most popular green spaces: Vondelpark
the striking buildings of the city’s former gasworks have been transformed into a vibrant cultural hotspot
The district encompasses several lively neighborhoods
including the lively Oud-West with its many restaurants and independent stores and the culturally diverse Bos en Lommer and De Baarsjes
Amsterdam West is historically a residential area and it retains a peaceful vibe
Traces of its history remain evident in the mix of architectural styles and repurposing of old buildings
particularly around Westerpark and the Oud-West
Amsterdam West is incredibly popular with families. In addition to the parks mentioned above, there is also the smaller yet perfectly formed Erasmuspark. Parents can sip a beer at the park’s child-friendly cafe and enjoy tasty food whilst watching their kids play
and (for those warmer days) paddling pools are located in West
The district also offers plenty of good Dutch schools
many of which are popular with expat families
The many bars and restaurants of Oud-West attract a vibrant, largely local crowd to their terraces. Meanwhile, every taste and need is catered for at De Hallen
Amsterdam’s former tram shed turned food hall and cultural hotspot which also includes a cinema
Many expat families happily make use of the many local Dutch schools in the area. To find a local Dutch school with a strong international community, parents can consult the Amsterdam Mama’s Facebook group. Located in De Baarsjes, families can also find De Visserschool
For municipal affairs, residents of West can arrange an appointment at the local city office on Bos en Lommerplein
The many bars, restaurants, and independent stores of Oud-West’s shopping streets attract a young and vibrant crowd. De Hallen, draws tourists and locals alike for its many culinary and cultural offerings. Just next to the tram shed building is the popular Ten Katemarkt which has an international allure
At Westergas, the city’s 19th-century former gasworks, residents and visitors will find trendy bars, restaurants, and pop-up stores. It’s also home to the Ketelhuis (in Dutch)
one of Amsterdam West’s many independent cinemas
For those who prefer not to cycle, tram and bus routes provide easy connections to the Centrum and around Amsterdam. Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, in the northwest of the district, offers connections to Schiphol, The Hague, and Haarlem
though in some areas there are waiting lists
there is a good chance you will find a suitable home in West
though it’s possible to find a range of sizes to meet your needs
being closer to the Centrum and the cultural buzz of Amsterdam
are more costly than the largely residential areas of Bos en Lommer and De Baarsjes
West offers a cozy and homely slice of Amsterdam life without the inconvenience of the tourist throng
and many family activities make it ideal for expat families and young people alike – particularly given its close proximity to the center of town
Several waves of construction during the 1950s led to the creation of Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West district
Stretching west from Rembrandtpark through the neighborhoods of Osdorp
the district is notable for its open green spaces and lakeside tranquility
Purpose-built residencies and innovative high-rises were built with the creation of a new community in mind
The district is also home to two of the city’s largest lakes (Sloterplas and Nieuwe Meer) and even has its own nature reserves
Its green spaces combined with its proximity to the center make the Nieuw-West popular amongst families and sports enthusiasts
Limited international stores can be found at Osdorpplein and Akerpoort
residents will find plentiful international produce along Burgemeester de Vlugtlaan
There are a number of good schools in the district, including the DENISE International School which offers bilingual learning, and the Japanese International School
Residents of Nieuw-West can enjoy reliable and frequent transport connections to the rest of Amsterdam. Lelylaan station also offers fast train connections to Schiphol, Rotterdam, and The Hague
Many newer properties include parking facilities and there are also on-street parking options
cycling to the city center can take up to an hour
It’s possible to find more affordable apartments and even houses in Nieuw-West
particularly as you travel further away from the center
Living in Nieuw-West is ideal for nature lovers
and those who prefer quieter and more affordable living
whilst still being within a reasonable distance of the city center
It’s also a good option for anyone needing fast connections to Schiphol and cities in the west
Amsterdam is recognized as the second safest city in Europe by the 2021 Safe Cities Index
It is virtually free from violent crime and there is little need for expats to consider crime rates when choosing a neighborhood in Amsterdam
there are also fewer traffic accidents in Amsterdam than in other cities
all neighborhoods in the Amsterdam area enjoy good transport connections
making them suitable options for most families
As a city with 881,000 bikes
it’s no surprise that the most common crime in Amsterdam is bike theft
this happens throughout the city and isn’t exclusive to any particular neighborhood
Expats contemplating which neighborhoods to avoid needn’t consider safety issues as a deciding factor
and the general feel of a neighborhood are more appropriate considerations
Expats who have secured jobs prior to arriving in Amsterdam may benefit from discussing places to live with their colleagues
proximity to the workplace may be a guiding factor
For families with children, the Amsterdam Mamas website is an invaluable resource. There is an endless amount of information available on this site. Their Facebook page also contains many live discussions over schools in each neighborhood, with a particular focus on the needs of expat families.

Halsema said she had decided to move the protest in consultation with the police and public prosecution department
The threat of violent confrontations with Ajax fans means it would not be possible to facilitate the demonstration
A number of other parts of the city have also been declared “risk zones”

AM11 expands the capabilities of Equinix with 250 server cabinets sold
It is expected that a further 700 cabinets will be added when the full capacity of the establishment is used
it is also possible to extend the establishment to an adjacent building
Equinix connects AM11 to the AM7 data centre to enable customers to easily connect to business ecosystems available on Platform Equinix

The soon-to-open innovation district in Amsterdam-Zuidoost – home to ING’s new office – will bring together people from all sorts of industries and backgrounds to work on ideas that go beyond banking
Rudolf Molkenboer: "We want to create a place that brings people and organisations together to work on answers for the future."
The idea is to create an area that attracts the brightest minds from different disciplines and connects people who are passionate about progressing and moving the world forward
The district provides a neutral and welcoming environment where people can collaborate on new ideas
is the best way to find solutions for the complex challenges the world is dealing with today
The district covers five ING buildings in the southeast of Amsterdam, as well as Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, ROC college and The Traveller restaurant
It is set up in such a way that people – entrepreneurs
big and small companies and government institutions – can easily connect with and inspire each other to find new solutions
Ideas that go beyond banking. It will officially open in January 2020
We’re already starting to build communities and have initiated the first events around digital identity and blockchain
the district’s official name will be announced
Initially our vision was to create a campus but as it has developed we feel ‘innovation district’ is a far better description of what we want to do here
We are developing the area with the Amsterdam municipality and other partners
Gradually we wish to step away from our role as an initiator
which actively collaborates with others to bring new ideas to market
will be one of the participants in the innovation district
The district itself is facilitating initiatives
It’s a place that brings people and organisations together to work on answers for the future
It doesn’t necessarily involve ING or have to be about banking
This creates huge challenges but also opportunities given how technology is enabling developments like smart housing and smart mobility
which in today’s online world is becoming more and more relevant to people and businesses alike.Tackling these issues is not something one company or organisation can do on its own
It needs a joint approach from many different angles by various contributors
That’s why the district wants to be a place where people and companies from multiple disciplines can work together on solutions
it will create (virtual) communities of like-minded innovators
ING will benefit from having a pool of talent on our doorstep
Similar concepts have successfully been rolled out by companies such as Microsoft
we were one of the first big companies to do so
We are committed to the area and want to do what we can to contribute to its further development
The concept fits our own innovation ambitions and ING’s purpose
which is why we are dedicating space in our building to get it off the ground
Ultimately the district should be neutral and stand-alone in its operations
Over time ING will step out of our current role as an initiator
the number of participants will grow and the concept can be expanded to other locations in other countries
The innovation district team in front of our new office building
which will accommodate some external partners

An explosive went off at a home on Kelbergen in Amsterdam Zuidoost causing a fire on Sunday evening. Paramedics took one resident to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, but they were otherwise unharmed, the police said.
The blast happened at around 8:00 p.m. The resulting blaze caused a lot of smoke and multiple fire trucks responded to the scene. Firefighters removed the resident from the home, the police said. No one else was home at the time of the explosion.
The police are looking for two suspects, likely teenagers between the ages of 15 and 20. They were dressed entirely in black and were seen fleeing the scene on a fat bike. At least one suspect had dark skin. Witnesses couldn’t see the other suspect clearly.
The police are investigating and asked witnesses to come forward.

Most Amsterdam residents lose on average two bikes a year
In any city where there are tourists, pickpockets try their luck. Though Amsterdam is no Barcelona or Rome (true pickpocket havens)
does attract thieves and so pickpocketing happens a lot
That’s because thieves know tourists carry a lot of cash with them and are easily distracted
How big is the chance you will be robbed or mugged in Amsterdam
there are five robbings in the streets of Amsterdam per day (by comparison: just in Paris Nord station
there are 30–40 suitcases stolen every day)
it was just taken out of their hands while talking on the phone
the victims were teenagers and not tourists
just give away your belongings without hesitation
Please remember: it’s only stuff that can be replaced
So that’s one area where tourists are safer
There are not a lot of murders in Amsterdam and
they are usually carried out between criminal groups operating in organized crime
In 10 cases the victims were known by the police and active as criminals themselves
when criminal groups started murdering each other
In the Netherlands, homicide is not very common
every year 5.27 in 100,000 people are murdered
the Netherlands is surely one of the safest countries in the world
Amsterdam’s Red Light District is full of crime
prostitutes working for pimps (which is illegal)
But, for people just walking around, the red light area is not dangerous at all. There is not much street crime in the Amsterdam Red Light District
probably because it’s always so busy and there are a lot of police cameras
naming the red light district as the safest area of Amsterdam is taking things too far
The center of Amsterdam is still the unsafest area for tourists
the poorest neighborhoods in a city are usually the most unsafe
This is also true in Amsterdam. Most crimes are recorded in the West: Bos & Lommer and Nieuw-West
These are areas with a lot of social housing
it’s not necessarily dangerous to be around there – most of the crime comes from burglaries
The only famously (supposedly) dangerous area in Amsterdam is Zuidoost
an area rather separated with some distance from the city
No chance you will wander around here by accident
was built in the 1960s as a new haven for young families
the area is home to a huge number of immigrants from all over the world
It suffers from more crime than any other part of the city
though things are looking much better since a huge renovation operation of the area
the Bijlmer is safe and a lot of fun to visit during day time (it’s not like somewhere with gangs like Los Angeles)
The Amsterdam council has made an interactive map that shows the safety of different neighborhoods in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is safe for all people but as a woman traveling on your own
I advise you to take the normal precautions: don’t wander alone in deserted areas such as parks after dark and don’t trust just any stranger! Other than that: Amsterdam is safe

2024 Community has become a buzzword in housing for young adults
Photo: Depositphotos.comHundreds of current and former tenants of a block of flats in Amsterdam can claim back up to five-years-worth of excess service costs following a long legal battle
The complex in Nieuw-West, owned by CBRE and formerly run by Change=, offered what Change= called ‘networked living’ for employed young people – studios with facilities such as a gym and fast internet
which cover the building management and communal areas
and at the end of the year tenants either get a refund or have to pay extra if the estimates are not enough to cover the costs
Change= used to charge tenants a separate fee for fast internet and other facilities
leading the company to triple the basic service cost instead – from €50 a month to €166 a month at the complex in question
But the courts ruled this too was illegal and ordered the company to pay back the access fees. Change= refused to do so and at the beginning of this year, CBRE brought in a new management company which took over on June 1.
The new managers are charging tenants lower service costs and CBRE has now reached an agreement with the tenants’ association and rights group Woon about refunds dating from the Change= period.
Tenants will be able to make a claim for the period 2019 to 2023 and some will get up to €4,000 back, Woon says. The deal covers all the tenants, not just those who made a formal protest.
The settlement does not include a separate legal battle at Change= based on the top-up fees for internet and other facilities in 2017 and 2018, Woon said.
Change= still operates a complex in Amsterdam Zuidoost which is owned by a German investment fund.

Use this graf to start: Surviving family members were joined by community members on Friday in commemorating the plane crash that rocked the Bijlmer in Amsterdam. It was 32 years ago that a cargo plane from Israeli airline El Al crashed into a high-rise apartment complex in the Amsterdam-Zuidoost neighborhood. The crash is "part of our national history," said Mayor Femke Halsema on Friday evening at the annual memorial near the “Tree that Saw Everything,” which is at the site of the disaster.
The Boeing 747-200 aircraft crashed into the Groeneveen and Klein-Kruitberg apartment buildings on October 4, 1992. At least 43 people were killed including all three El Al crew members and an El Al employee. It is unclear how many people were killed in total, because it has long been rumored that undocumented immigrants were living with friends and family members in many of the homes. The crash obliterated 40 apartments, and 135 other residential units caught fire.
"For many residents, there is a Zuidoost before the disaster and a Zuidoost after the disaster," Halsema said. "But, I say to the residents among you, many of you have found renewed strength to hand off your district in a better and more beautiful way to the generations that will follow you. After the nightmare of October 4, 1992, you are working on a district where your children can realize their dreams," she continued.
The memorial service began on Friday at 5:15 p.m. at the Tree that Saw Everything. "Zuidoost is coming together again today around this tree. For a listening ear or a comforting word. So that everyone who still lives with the disaster every day, can also find a little peace here and today," the mayor said to the dozens of people present.
The ceremony was scheduled to include a musical performance, the laying of flowers, and a moment of silence. Aside from Halsema, Bijlmer Air Disaster Commemoration Chair Henk van de Belt was set to speak, as was Ineke van Gent. She chaired the ACOI advisory board to convince the Dutch government to declassify more documents about the crash and to make them more publicly available. In September, part of the secret archive was made public. However, some other documents remained classified.
The exact contents of all of the cargo that was carried by the Israeli airline that fateful day is still partially unknown. Although the contents of material loaded in the Netherlands was officially cleared by Dutch Customs officers, it was later revealed that they did not actually inspect the cargo.
It has been the subject of rumors, speculation and uncertainty for more than three decades. Emergency workers and local residents suffered health problems in the years that followed the crash. The black box flight data recorder was never found.
Edge and BAM Bouw en Techniek are officially starting the construction of ABN AMRO’s new home base at Foppingadreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost
the original building will be redeveloped into a Paris-proof building and refurbished in a circular way
The redevelopment plans for the building of over 100,000 square metres are in line with ABN AMRO’s sustainability vision and were designed in partnership with real estate developer Edge and the architectural firm that designed the original building
which will be realized by BAM Bouw en Techniek
will soon provide space for around 11,000 employees and will also have a social function
ABN AMRO has set the ambition that by 2030 all owned offices will comply with the Paris Climate Agreement
the purpose of this redevelopment is to renew and expand the existing building on Foppingadreef and to make it Paris Proof
70,000 square metres of the building will be reused and many of the materials left over after demolition will be repurposed
wood rather than concrete will be used for the main structure that will support approximatively 30,000 square metres of new office floors
The roof and the front of the building will be lined with 10,500 square metres of solar panels to significantly reduce energy consumption compared to the existing building
Circular principles are integrated in every phase of the redevelopment
a BREAAM Excellent sustainability certification will in any case be awarded
The new office will thus become an inspiring place to work and meet that is not only better for the climate but also better for the immediate living environment
Foppingadreef is a street located in Amsterdam Zuidoost
a district with a great deal of social inequality
ABN AMRO has teamed up with the City of Amsterdam
(neighbourhood) organizations and residents to contribute on a social level
for which the bank already signed a covenant in 2021

Parking fees in the municipality of Amsterdam are expected to swell by about 3.5 percent next year
bringing the rate in the city center up from 7.50 euros per hour to about 7.76 euros
Parking permit fees will also increase by the same rate
according to a city announcement on Wednesday regarding a deal reached between the mayor and the coalition of aldermen
The full City Council will still need to vote on the matter
but the coalition is expected to hold majority support for the rate increase
It will bring parking rates in denser and more popular areas just outside the city center up from 6.50 euros hourly to about 6.73 euros
and the next tier will see an increase of about 18 cents above the current 5 euro rate
nearly all paid parking within the A10 ring road
the cheapest street parking hourly rates in Amsterdam will increase by five or six cents from 1.60 euros
Residents in the heart of the city center can also expect to see their permits increase from just over 316 euros for a six-month period to nearly 327 euros
Other urban neighborhoods just outside the center will see permit fees increase from 186 euros to 193 euros
already made it clear that most free parking areas would be eliminated by the fourth quarter of 2025
The city already said in 2023 it was looking to eliminate a total of over 10,000 parking spaces by 2025. The number of parking places in the city center will also be reduced as the city is trying to focus on becoming more sustainable
Asylum Minister Marjolein Faber has said that there is nothing she can do for Dutch-born Mikael (11) and his Armenian mother, who are not allowed to stay in the Netherlands
The minister reiterated that she no longer has the authority to make an exception in dire cases
“We are not going to make any exceptions,” Faber said during an official work trip
Mikael’s mother arrived in the Netherlands in 2010 and stayed in the country even though her asylum and residency requests were denied
Mikael and his mother must leave the Netherlands within 28 days of the court ruling
be out of the country before the end of this month
Faber placed the blame squarely on Mikael’s mother
She heard very quickly that she has no right to stay here.”
A rally and march in support of the boy is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Amsterdam-Zuidoost
This was organized by a woman who lives in the same neighborhood as the family
Mikael, an 11-year-old boy who was born in Amsterdam, is facing deportation to Armenia. The Amsterdam court previously ruled that the boy should be granted a residency permit. But despite that ruling, a personal appeal from Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, and a petition signed almost 25,000 times
the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) still wants to deport him
in an asylum center in Amsterdam Zuidoost and is set to start at the Cygnus Gymnasium after the summer
The asylum center is their fifth address so far
Mikael and his mother will be evicted from the asylum center and taken to a family location
where they will be prepared for deportation to Armenia
“The IND might as well send me to Ghana. I know that country just as well as I know Armenia,” Mikael told Parool
The IND has been trying to deport him for five years
“We live in constant uncertainty,” the boy said

the Rutte II government implemented a children’s pardon for kids who have lived in the Netherlands for a long time without a residency permit because they’re asylum procedure took too long or their parents didn’t cooperate
Children who had lived in the Netherlands for five years or longer on 1 February 2023 would receive a residency permit under certain conditions
so he fell under the much stricter “definitive arrangement” on his fifth birthday
Four years after the arrangement took effect
only 6.7 percent of children who applied for this arrangement got a residency permit
compared to 46.9 percent of kids who fell under the transitional arrangement
the Amsterdam court ruled that Mikael and his mother should be granted residency in the Netherlands
The State Secretary of Asylum Affairs filed an appeal
The case has still not been brought before the Council of State
“We have been waiting for the verdict for 2.5 years now,” Gohar told Parool
She thinks the government is playing with her child’s life
All we want is peace and a place to live in Amsterdam
we have people here who feel like family.”
Lawyer Martin Vegter of Defnese for Children
told Parool that outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg has written an appeal of “many dozens” of pages to get this boy deported
“And that while the IND has a backlog of 70,000 cases
and why does the State Secretary choose to invest so much money and resources into this case involving a child?” Defense for Children is aware of at least four other similar cases that the Ministry continues to litigate
Amsterdam is investing 7.5 million euros into making public transport more accessible and affordable
with measures particularly focused on the districts Noord
The city wants to make public transport stops easier to access for people with disabilities
adapt roads to allow more buses in underserved neighborhoods
and improve the link between bicycle use and public transport
The money for these measures was previously released to maintain public transport in the face of disappointing passenger revenues
decided to redirect it into improving accessibility to publid transport in the short term
proximity to public transport stops is an important condition for improving its use
There are currently neighborhoods like De Eendracht
where the distance between stops is too great
The city will modify roads in these neighborhoods so that buses can use them more easily
It will also build additional stops in a way that is more accessible to people with disabilities
the city will take measures to absorb the increasing number of travelers resulting from new construction in these areas
the public space around several metro stations will be improved
the public transport initiative to Riekerpolder will get once-off financial support
The city will create more bicycle parking at public transport stops in Noord
the tram track on De Boeleaan will be made suitable for buses
and the tram stop in the Sluisbuurt will be widened to accommodate more travelers
“Many people are already dependent on the metro bus and tram
But we will also need public transport in the future because the city is becoming increasingly busy
and public transport is a very efficient way to transport people,” Van der Horst said
“It is not yet easily accessible to everyone due to the distance
or because they cannot easily reach the stops
I want to ensure that more people can travel by public transport in a pleasant way.”
Amsterdam is also pushing money into investigating whether it can run metros longer into the night during the weekend
That is a long-cherished wish of many locals
but complicated to implement given the current staff shortages and the fact that maintenance to the tracks happens at night

The perpetrator fled and is still at large

“Artists from Zuidoost are often not linked to the classical school,” says Breeveld
“We know the hip-hop from Southeast and it's great

There is a diverse palette of artists on stage
all with a personal connection to Zuidoost
The relatively unknown classical music of these musicians runs parallel to the untold history on which the exhibition focuses.

Someone stole part of the Nelson Mandela monument in Amsterdam Zuidoost
The memorial in the Nelson Mandela park consists of seven bronze faces
The police are investigating. “On Wednesday, March 1, both the police and municipality received a report that one of the faces of the monument is missing. Given the size of the part, it was not an easy and unobtrusive act to perform,” the police said
“That is part of the investigation,” the police said
The monument is a memorial to South African freedom fighter and president Nelson Mandela
It was designed by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng
The seven faces are of people who live in the area
“I was shocked to hear that our residents have been robbed of one of our finest works of art,” district chairman Tanja Jadnanansing said to AT5
“The memorial stands for freedom and fits perfectly within our district
It often functions as a meeting place and is also mentioned very regularly.”
A spokesperson of the district said it was doing everything in its power to get the piece of art back
and extra attachments on and around the remaining parts of the monument

and the construction of what is termed a ‘land tunnel’
A park will be built on the roof of this tunnel
which will connect the various districts in Amsterdam Zuidoost
This park will be twice the size of the Vondelpark

The city of Amsterdam closed a home in Zuidoost due to suspicions of human trafficking
Municipal inspectors and the police followed an online prostitution ad to the home and found two women working there as sex workers in exploitative conditions
The municipal inspectors responded to the advertisement on a prostitution website and made an appointment for January 5
A “scantily dressed” woman opened the door when they arrived
They identified themselves as municipal inspectors and entered the home for inspection
according to the closure notice provided to NL Times
The sex worker who opened the door told the inspectors that she had been in the Netherlands for 15 days
The inspectors found a second woman hiding behind a couch in the home
that a customer had assaulted her a few days earlier because he wanted his money back
The inspectors noted that the bedroom was furnished to “receive customers,” lit with red LED lights and with condoms and lubricant on a table
There was also a camera in the corner of the room
One of the two sex workers told the inspectors that the camera was always on: “Even when I sleep.”
the two women were in a text message group with two men and a woman who placed their ads and arranged their appointments
The sex workers paid them half of their income
The women told the inspectors that they put the money in an envelope in the letterbox every day
and someone whom they never spoke to came to collect it at different times
The municipality closed the home for three months based on the General Local Ordinance and the zoning plan
“Because there were signs of human trafficking
the sex workers were transferred to the Amsterdam Coordination Point against Hunan Trafficking
where they were taken in,” the city said in a press release
On Monday, the court in Amsterdam sentenced three men to 25 years in prison for the murder of 24-year-old Shaquille Goedhart
The victim was shot dead on 2 May 2019 near the Hoptille flat in Amsterdam Zuidoost
The imposed sentences match the Public Prosecution Service’s (OM) recommendation
The court considered it proven that the trio - Badr K
(29) - were responsible for the “thoroughly prepared” assassination
“Chilling and brutal,” the court described the murder
allegedly belonged to the same criminal network as the three suspects
The motive for the murder remained unclear
“The court assumes a settlement in the criminal circuit.”
the suspects lured the victim to Amsterdam Zuidoost
Investigation showed that the suspects had several telephone contacts with Goedhart shortly before his murder
two gunmen fired three bullets at the victim
Attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail
which the police tracked down over a week after the murder
Traces of Goedhart’s blood were found in the back seat
it has not been established which of the three men were the gunmen and who drove the getaway car
But that is not necessary to convict all three
including the attempted murder of a spy shop employee
The OM had also recommended acquittal for these charges
The first explosion happened at around 11:45 p.m
at an apartment complex on Mastbosstraat in Noord
The blast blew out several windows in the building’s entrance and caused cracks to form in others
The police arrested two suspects on the N247 a short time later
The second explosion also happened in Noord
this time on Terschellingstraat just before 1 a.m
That incident also caused damage at the entrance of the building
the word "war" was found written on the wall
which was likely scrawled by the perpetrators
“War” was also written next to the entrance of an apartment building on Populierenweg in Amsterdam-Oost
left shards of glass littered on the street
Several workers were still at the location at 11 a.m
The fourth blast happened on Kelbergen in Zuidoost
Some explosives may have been left at the scene
The police cordoned off the area for some time
and the military's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service responded to the scene
A connection to the Bigidagoe's murder is one of the scenarios police are investigating

Hundreds of local residents and surviving relatives commemorated the Bijlmer plane crash in Amsterdam-Zuidoost on Wednesday
It has been 31 years since a cargo plane from Israeli airline El Al crashed into the Groeneveen and Kruitberg apartment buildings in Amsterdam’s Bijlmer
the disaster is commemorated at the “Tree that saw everything,” a tree that was left standing despite the crash and resulting fire
even after 31 years," said Tanja Jadnanansing
the chair of the Zuidoost district council
"The tree that was there then is still there
All those unanswered questions are still there," Jadnanansing said
Survivor Marlène Truideman reflected on the loss of her two children
"A plane crashed right in the house where they felt safe
A total of 43 people are known to have died as the result of the crash on October 4
The three crew members of the El Al Boeing were among the dead
Forty apartments were completely destroyed
and Henk van de Belt of the Bijlmermeer Airplane Commemoration Committee
The gathering closed with music by Gilbert Hamel
there was no air traffic over part of the Bijlmer during the commemoration
which is normally a busy flight path for Schiphol
After the disaster there was a lot of uncertainty
it is not known exactly how many people died
because many undocumented migrants were said to have been living in the flats
There were also questions raised about the cargo on the aircraft
Emergency workers and local residents suffered health problems later
and the black box containing the flight information was never found
considered a "neighborhood mother," mentioned how there was no victim support 31 years ago
"To heal we only had each other; the Bijlmer community."

Extinction Rebellion (XR) announced plans to block a section of the A10 ring road in Amsterdam to protest against ING's funding of the fossil fuel industry
The activist group will block the A10 near Amstelveenseweg at the iconic Infinity building where the bank's headquarters was formerly located
"Extinction Rebellion will not release the A10 until ING stops financing climate disruption," the organization wrote in a statement
It was not immediately clear if XR intends to block the A10 on a daily basis
similar to the daily blockade of the A12 in The Hague during a four-week period at the end of the summer
"We will basically stay on December 30 for as long as it lasts
we will see what we do next," an XR spokesperson told reporters during a press conference on Friday in front of the bank's current headquarters in Amsterdam-Zuidoost
ING has not had a presence in the building since 2014
The Infinity building shares nicknames with the Dutch words for shoe
the building in the Zuidaas is still owned by ING
Extinction Rebellion has been taking peaceful action against ING's fossil financing policy
Climate disasters are occurring at a rapid pace
with 20,000 children having to flee extreme weather every day," Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Let de Jong wrote
"Yet ING only pursues one thing: profit for its shareholders on the backs of innocent people."
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said that there is a fundamental right to protest
but added that right is not without limits
She said that she would discuss the planned protests with the climate activists
demanding that the bank immediately put an end to its provision of financial services for the fossil fuel industry
"We will ensure that the whole of the Netherlands knows what ING is doing
The organization plans to bring in supporters who helped organize 35 separate blockades on the A12 in The Hague
including the daily protests from September 9 through October 5
Those protests were to demand that the national government stop subsidizing fossil fuel projects
and were stopped after members of the Tweede Kamer
passed a motion to phase out the subsidies
"Three-fourths of Dutch people now support phasing out fossil fuel subsidies
and no less than a third even support stopping them immediately
The GroenLinks faction in Amsterdam partially relented on its plan to remove all I Amsterdam letters in the Dutch capital
If the residents of Nieuw-West and Zuidoost want to keep their I Amsterdam letters
D66 alderman Udo Kock previously said in his advice to the city council that the I Amsterdam letters in Zuidoost and on Sloterplas "do not have to go"
the letters serve as a meeting place and a jungle gym for children
The PvdA and SP also want the letters to remain in these locations
"Of course we also let the whole discussion affect us"
GroenLinks council member Zeeger Ernstig said to AT5
the letters on the Museumplein are in our view symbolic of the city as a money machine and a symbol of mass tourism
We understand that in other parts of the city the letters are valued differently
We are not deaf to this and we want to determine together with the neighborhoods what needs to be done."
residents of Zuid do not get a say in this because removing the letters from the Museumplein is "a necessary change to show that the city is not just a product"
A fire broke out in a restaurant on the Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam-Zuidoost early Thursday morning, Amsterdam police said
The fire was believed to have been caused by an explosive device that detonated inside the building
Police officers at the Flierbosdreef police station heard a loud blast at 2:40 a.m
They immediately went outside and were soon informed by dispatchers about a fire at a building in Bijlmerplein
the fire brigade arrived and quickly brought the situation under control
The incident occurred at a Surinamese restaurant. No one was inside the building during the explosion, and there were no reported injuries, according to Het Parool. The owners have not yet determined the full extent of the damage
Police stated that a suspicious individual was reportedly lingering nearby just before the loud explosion
Investigators are searching for a male suspect
with a light tan complexion and a solid build
He was last seen walking towards Bijlmerdreef
Police launched an investigation into this fire and said they were looking for more information
They are particularly interested in any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the Bijlmerplein area between 2:30 a.m
This is the third incident involving an explosion in Amsterdam this week. Early Monday morning, an explosive device went off on the balcony of an apartment building in Amsterdam-Oost. On Thursday morning, another explosion occurred at an apartment building in Amsterdam Nieuw-West around 4:10 a.m
Kurano Bigiman brought the grammar school to Amsterdam-Zuidoost
“A teacher's job is to model a curious attitude toward knowledge.”
classical languages teacher Kurano Bigiman cheerfully starts the Latin lesson by raising his voice
There are thirteen fifth and sixth year students in the class
Three of them will be the first graduates of the gymnasium at IR in the spring
Two of these students study Greek in addition to Latin
Bigiman worked at the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam South
which has existed for almost a hundred years and where he also went to school
His former colleague Jeroen Rijlaarsdam had become rector at IR
Lely Lyceum in Amsterdam-Zuidoost - in which the Bijlmer is the oldest and best-known district - and asked Bigiman to start a gymnasium there six years ago
“Students have the right to have any type of education relatively nearby,” is his belief
In 2021 he was therefore elected Amsterdammer of the Year
“Many of our students dream of a university study such as medicine or law and think that the extra 'sticker' on their diploma gives them more access to this
but I think what they hear from home is: 'Do your best and you might get better.' And I try to support their motivation.” The grammar school students say that their families have indeed encouraged them
“You have a better chance of getting a good job and earning more money.” And what do peers say
“That it is of no use to you,” says one of the students
Bigiman works at IR for the first half of the week
Lely Lyceum and the other half still at the Vossius Gymnasium
The cut is exactly on Wednesday during the lunch break
“Vossius also has students who are the first in their families to go to grammar school
But they often receive more direct pre-university or grammar school advice from primary school than students in Zuidoost and their parents have also taken them to the theater
for example.” Bigiman himself accompanied his parents to the library and the city center to gain new knowledge
“They pushed me to achieve more than they could.” He was the first in his family to attend grammar school
“The Vossius was a whiter stronghold then than it is now
I felt at home and am very grateful that I had the opportunity to learn a lot there
I want to offer my students a similar opportunity
At grammar school you can become acquainted with story elements that are universal and with texts and myths that are so catchy that we still deal with them
Take General Scipio's speeches in Livy's text to his soldiers to encourage them
that resembles the political speeches of our time
That also provokes discussion and that is good.”
“With my profession you will not immediately create world peace or solve diseases
but it is the task of a teacher to demonstrate a curious attitude towards knowledge
I can go crazy about the different verb forms in Greek
I play a bit of a professional idiot to show them that you can disappear in your profession and that that is okay
And of course students will think you are crazy and strange
but I think it will come across and they will appreciate it too.”
Lely Lyceum has developed in recent years with bilingual education
technasium and gymnasium and is experiencing strong growth
The school now has more than 1100 students
There are not enough places to sit during breaks
so students wander through the corridors or eat their lunch - acquired in the nearby Reigersbos shopping center - at the study places
Akosua and Afra are taking a break in one of the hallways
Akosua says: “My parents thought it was interesting that I was going to study Latin
which gives it prestige.” Afra: “Gymnasium sounds like the highest thing you can do
And I've been at it too long to stop.” They say that Bigiman teaches very enthusiastically
Bigiman has had a colleague in Radhika Sahtie for more than two years
Together they form the professional section
Sahtie is teaching Greek to third-year students today
The students come in and hang their coats over their chairs
and then a conversation about her relationship follows
Sahtie previously worked at a school in the Schilderwijk district of The Hague
“I moved to Amsterdam and wanted to work at a similar school to contribute to equality of opportunity in a neighborhood where students often miss opportunities.” Bigiman and Sahtie are happy with the extra attention they can give students because the classes are small with a maximum of fourteen students
VWO students can take a course on the Roman Empire during separate hours
Anyone who is interested can then transfer to grammar school
Bigiman: “A pre-university education student took Latin for a while and then left again
But he got the chance and was able to make a choice
My brother was very interested in myths and wanted to do classical education
but that was not possible because he was doing HAVO
Why can't we be a little more relaxed about that
At a school in Oslo that we visited as teachers
boys who assembled a fuse box in electrical engineering then went on to French literature class
It is good not only to think in terms such as 'useful'
but to look at what is deepening and enriching
A car company Carfix Dew in Amsterdam Zuidoost was closed down indefinitely by Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan on Tuesday morning
The authorities believe the company built hidden compartments into cars for criminals to use in smuggling weapons
This is the first time that a garage in Amsterdam is closed for posing "a serious risk" to public order

The main suspect in that investigation was seen speaking to K
several times and hidden compartments were found in three of his cars
In February a surveillance team frequently saw criminals convicted for drug or weapon crimes entering the business
And a Volvo seized in a money laundering investigation was also driven in and out of the company several times
though Het Parool could not reach him for a comment on Tuesday morning
Criminals increasingly use hidden compartments to traffic drugs, weapons or money. One Amsterdam detective told the newspaper that this is likely due to increased and more dynamic searches and checks. Last year the Amsterdam police discovered 1.3 million euros in a hidden compartment under a Saab's spare tire.
Three people were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in a student home in Amsterdam Zuidoost during the early hours of Tuesday morning
A 26-year-old man from Amsterdam was killed in the shooting
The police responded to a report of shots fired at the home on Daalwijk around 1:00 a.m
First responders found the 26-year-old man with a bullet wound in his back
The three suspects reported to a police station on Tuesday morning
They were arrested for further investigation into their possible involvement in the shooting
Exactly what happened in the student home is still unclear
The police have spoken to a number of witnesses
Investigators call on witnesses to come forward
A man who was shot and killed in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Wednesday night was identified as 32-year-old former football player Kelvin Maynard
Two people on a two-wheel vehicle open fired on Maynard as he was driving his car on Langbroekdfreef at around 8:30 p.m
The car came to a stop against a nearby fire station
Firefighters immediately started resuscitating the former footballer
But he succumbed to his injuries a short time later
They were dressed in black clothing and driving a black two-wheel vehicle
The police are investigating and call on witnesses to come forward
and developed as a young footballer with Zeeburgia in Amsterdam before transferring to FC Volendam where he eventually turned pro
He spent the bulk of his professional career there
His second season there helped the team to a surprisingly strong finish that landed Volendam in the Eredivisie for the first time in years
In later seasons he played with FC Emmen and Royal Antwerp
The defenseman also had stints with Portuguese side SC Olhanese
Earlier this year he joined Alphense Boys after playing with semi-pro team Quick Boys in Katwijk
Early in September, 23-year-old Genciel Feller from Amsterdam Zuidoost was shot and killed in Willemstad on Curacao
there are rumors in the Amsterdam criminal underworld that Feller and others from Amsterdam Zuidoost stole hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from a criminal for whom they had to store the drugs
Feller suddenly had a lot of money to spend
Locals fear that this will prompt more violence in the district
Amsterdam police chief Frank Paauw recently raised concerns about young people walking around armed in Amsterdam Zuidoost. During a debate on the increasing violence in this neighborhood
Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema said that more than conventional measures will be needed to address this issue
She therefore wants to focus the city's approach on police investigations and strengthening the district
so that local residents can help suppress violence themselves
Maynard was also the second person to be shot and killed in Amsterdam on Wednesday. Defense attorney Derk Wiersum was gunned down in front of his home in Amsterdam Zuid on Wednesday morning.

It was a difficult night for one drunk pedestrian
who police officers found sleeping on the shoulder at the junction of two major expressways in Amsterdam on Friday night
The man was on his way to Amsterdam-Zuidoost
but police said he was "so under the influence" that he decided to plop down on the shoulder get some sleep
Police parked their vehicle to block a portion of traffic from approaching the man near the Amstel Junction
where the A10 ring road connects with the A2
Officers there rousted the individual and got him off the expressway

The police believe that the perpetrators behind the assassination of Ali Motamed in Almere in December last year
Analysis of telephone traffic revealed that they likely live somewhere in the area south of Gaasperplas to Gein
was murdered on his way to work around 6:45 a.m
A BMW can be seen in the victim's street several times before the murder on surveillance camera footage
This same BMW was found burnt out on Almere-Poort shortly after the shooting
Digital detectives found a recurring pattern when analysing telephone traffic surrounding this assassination
At the exact times the BMW was spotted in the victim's street in Almere
cellphones also moved from Amsterdam to Almere
Te police believe these are the phones of the assassins
those phones were in the area of Almere Poort
The police believe the perpetrators were hiding in the area
as the phones only returned to Amsterdam later that evening
The cellphones' signals disappeared a short time later and was not used again since
The perpetrators are two men between the ages of 20 and 25 years old
Both were completely dressed in black during the shooting
One man is around 1.8 meters tall and has a wide or solid built
