(WLUK) -- Taking to the snowmobile trails in the Northwoods is part of "How WI Live" in Wisconsin
the lack of snow has stopped the sport in its tracks
Officials in the town of Townsend say the delay has an impact on the area economy
Rick Van Asten says he'll never forget the winter of 2023
"Last year, we were open for 10 days, and then the trails closed, because of the lack of snow," said Van Asten, president of Red Arrow Snowmobile-ATV Club
Van Asten says this year is off to another relatively slow start
because we have plenty of snow in the early part of the season
things don't look so well," he said
Van Asten says the club grooms nearly 70 miles of snowmobile trails in the Townsend area
which connects numerous communities throughout the Northwoods
you don't hear the buzz up on the grade here coming through town," said Townsend supervisor Chuck De Moulin
De Moulin says snow-related business is down at least 30%
be it the the grocery store and our fuel stop
all needs to have that extra income coming in," he said
In the meantime, Van Asten says the snowmobile trails remain closed
So we ask people to please stay off the trails
until we can make them safe," he said
There are about 480 miles of snowmobile trails in Oconto County alone
no fewer than 15 combinations qualified for the jump-off of the 1.55m Grand Prix qualifier
Mathijs van Asten raced to victory with his own 13-year-old mare
but it was somewhat of a coincidence," Mathijs van Asten admitted afterward
"I took a fairly tight turn towards obstacle number three
there's decent prize money—why not keep making tight turns and go a bit faster?"
Van Asten pushed Shawn Casady and the 13-year-old Cool Quarz (Quarz
breeder: Gunula Henningsen) into second place
Skylar Wireman completed the top three aboard the nine-year-old Barclino B (Constanzehof's Barcley
Erynn Ballard finished in fourth place with the 14-year-old KWPN gelding
ahead of the winners of the 1.45m opening class—Conor Swail and Theo 160 (Christian)

APPLETON — District 4 candidate Virgil Van Asten is in a familiar position heading into the April 2 nonpartisan election for Common Council
He advanced from the February primary election and now will battle Martyn Smith
Van Asten survived the primary to face Israel Del Toro
Del Toro won the 2022 contest but didn't seek reelection this year
Smith was the top finisher in the primary last month with 219 votes
Candidate Christopher Quann finished third and was eliminated from contention
District 4 includes the area bounded by Buchanan and Weimar streets on the east
Lawe and Drew streets on the west and Pacific Street on the north
As part of The Post-Crescent's election coverage
Smith and Van Asten were asked to update a questionnaire to explain why they're running for office
what makes them the better candidate and how they would address the most important issues facing the city
For information about registering to vote and polling locations, visit the MyVote Wisconsin website at myvote.wi.gov/en-us

progressive candidates in local government
When I learned this council position was open
I knew it was time to give back to this community
Van Asten: I've been self-employed in the IT industry since 1997
That's 27 years of getting paid only when we come up with solutions to solve complex problems
Projects that should take months are taking years
Appleton should have a council that solves problems rather than creates them
What makes you the better candidate in this race?Smith: I have level-headed leadership skills that can bring people together
I will work to keep Appleton moving forward with vibrant public spaces and economic opportunity
and I'm the only candidate who's looking to continue that forward momentum
progressive candidates in local government." That means defund the police
Appleton spends 34.6% of our (general fund) tax dollars repaying debt
not someone who is going to hand cash to social special interest groups
Editor's note: Smith said he has never been an advocate for defunding the police
"Public safety means working with the police and fire departments to make sure they have the resources they need to do their jobs," Smith said
Smith: It has been great to knock on doors all over District 4 and listen to residents
which included noise along residential streets and safety in our parks
My first priority as alderperson will be to support the needs of these neighborhoods
I will work to make sure Appleton remains an affordable place to raise a family and that we support local jobs that pay a living wage
and I will bring to my work as alderman a communication style that locates common ground rather than accentuates division
Appleton budgeted $12.7 million over city revenue
The council approved tens of thousands of dollars for a new website
while we have homeless people sleeping in the walkway over College Avenue
The politicians in Chicago are cutting city operations and programs because of illegal immigration
New York and California are shipping immigrants out
The people of Appleton are saying we better have a plan
so we don't have to turn schools into shelters like New York did
Editor's note: The Appleton council adopted balanced budgets in 2024 and 2023
Expenses in excess of revenues are financed by existing fund balances or borrowing

Peter Edwards has 'vivid' memories of Rostrum Clubs of Tasmania and the community breaking the world record for the longest marathon debate.
In November 1996 he and fellow Rostrum member, Dave Asten, were involved in a mammoth effort to break the world record for the longest marathon debate.
The non-stop debate lasted over 29 days and involved 725 people who came from all parts of Tasmania to participate.
The standing record for the longest marathon debate stood at just over 21 days, but during the Tasmanian attempt to break that record a new record of 28 days was set by the University of Galway in Ireland.
"We said to ourselves, 'we can do this, we can beat this'." Peter said.
"'Let's blow it, let's do 29 days'."
Dave Asten and Peter Edwards spoke with Lucie Cutting about the almost 30-year-old record set by Rostrum Clubs of Tasmania and the community that still stands today.

He is the owner and operator of Liberty Hall
a banquet and conference facility in Kimberly
Van Asten has a 35-year track record as a businessman and entrepreneur
he received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
and he has gone on to own and develop supermarkets

is making possible the Michael Van Asten Auditorium
one of the primary teaching spaces in the state-of-the-art Gehl-Mulva Science Center
The remaining $750,000 will be used to establish the Van Asten Fellows program
It will provide financial support to students at St
“We are thrilled to receive such generous gifts from Mike,” said St
“The support for the auditorium was central to the realization of the science building
which has already been such a transformational development for St
And we are especially thankful for the creation of the Van Asten Fellows program
We don’t have many scholarships earmarked for our upper-class students
and it’s wonderful to see their academic accomplishments rewarded — and at a time in their college careers when they need it most.”
Van Asten said there are many reasons behind his gift and that is more important than ever to “invest” in a well-educated and motivated workforce
Norbert liberal arts education has continually enriched my life and well-being,” he said
Norbert faculty and staff focus intentionally to connect a student’s liberal arts education with numerous learning experiences outside the classroom — to better prepare each graduate for a rewarding life beyond college.”

Van Asten has twice won the Good Neighbor Award from the National Restaurant Association and the Compassion in Action Award from the Salvation Army
You may have met Bret Van Asten at The Abbey in De Pere
or at Moe’s Southwest Grill in Ashwaubenon
which he owned. If you knew him when he was in high school
you may have hired his business to cut your lawn
learns from them and moves on when the time is right. He recently embarked on his most recent adventure — owner of Breadsmith franchises in Ashwaubenon and Howard
In last week’s column
former owner Kim Johnson reflected on 14 years of owning that franchise. When it came time to sell
she and her husband had several people interested but Van Asten’s experience made him an ideal pick
“The franchise had to make sure I was a good fit,” Van Asten said. “The process was somewhat more than I expected. I had a telephone interview with the president of Breadsmith and spent a week at their headquarters and corporate store. It was part interview and part training.”
In contrast with his previous experience as owner of a Moe’s franchise
he said that Breadsmith had more of a family feeling
There are fewer stores and more involvement with ownership
He wrote a business plan as he worked on obtaining financing
Breadsmith provided information on what a normal operation would do in terms of revenue and expenses
“Banks love a business plan,” Van Asten said. “To a degree
you have to be a little arrogant when writing it
and say what you would do differently to grow the business. What would that be? It might be mixing things up in the retail shop or growing the wholesale business.”
With the first years of his career spent as a grocery store wholesaler
his business plan emphasized that experience
He says the Johnsons did an excellent job in building a base of stores where the product is sold; he wants to add to those numbers
and he would like to have five or six. But the first year will be for learning. Johnson is staying on for 30 days to help with training
“Having Kim stay was huge," Van Asten said. "What I learned in a week at Breadsmith couldn’t possibly prepare me for everything. She is helping to put the puzzle together as to the best way to do things. She has 14 years of experience; you can’t replicate that.”
and others are not. Every franchise system is different
and even though he spent about seven years with Moe’s
the one commonality is that it’s all hard work.
I’m working about 60 hours plus a week
but I expected to do that at this point," Van Asten said. "I need to learn to delegate — that’s something I learned at Moe’s — because one person can’t handle all of these jobs
finding those people is difficult in the current environment
with “Help Wanted” signs on the door of almost every business. He believes he will be successful by adhering to his philosophy of appreciating and treating staff members well.
he found workers through referrals and by building relationships with high schools; he will continue to do that
And then there is that delicious perk of getting to take home a loaf of bread most days

and says it’s his favorite bread. His marketing efforts
will maintain the image of the product as being fresh with no preservatives or additives. While there are reward programs
most of the customer loyalty is because people love it
He is also growing in his love for the business
not only does he get to smell the aroma of baking bread every day
it also has hours that are more conducive to raising a family
this is one he plans to keep for many years with plans to put his children to work
“This business is a good fit,” Van Asten added
and just as I always worked as a young person
this will be a good opportunity and education for them to learn about business. Maybe they will want to grow up and do this or be inspired to do something else.”
he is inspired by the opportunities for growth
He plans to take what he has learned from the Johnsons and then add wholesale accounts
and a few more satellite stores. Mostly
he wants to keep the stellar reputation that has been established
“Not much is going to change," Van Asten said
"This is one good family selling it to another good family. The Johnsons bought it when their family was young
and we are the same. It will be very similar — regular folks trying to make a living.”

DE PERE – At the bottom of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay marquee on Riverside Drive in Allouez are the words “Compassionately Serves Those in Need.”
Gene Van Asten is thankful the diocese has been practicing what it preaches
Van Asten has been getting the help he needs from the diocese the last few years
Molested as a teenager by a Catholic priest in central Wisconsin
the 66-year-old Van Asten credits the comforting support of Bishop David Ricken and others from the Green Bay diocese for easing the enduring pain
Ricken for the third straight year led a Prayer Service for Healing at two diocesan churches this week
More than 125 people attended those services
including about 50 at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in De Pere on Wednesday night
The solemn services of more than an hour focus on individuals in need of healing from the Roman Catholic Church
including those who have been sexually abused by clergy
Ricken offered an apology at the service Wednesday
"It's nothing you did to deserve this," Ricken told those in the pews
Many in attendance have been directly or indirectly impacted by church abuse
“I am very grateful to Bishop Ricken for his stance on wanting to help the victims
Van Asten has attended the healing services every year
He and other victims also have helped the diocese plan the services
which are held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month
who meet every couple months with diocesan advocate Jayne Stefanic
added a new element to this year’s services
were invited to reflect on the link and then come up to place it at the foot of the cross
as a way to let go of what has been holding back that person or a loved one in their life
Ricken said the diocese has “zero tolerance” for misconduct
employees and volunteers in its churches and schools
“We have to do our due diligence with regard to accusations that might be brought forward,” Ricken said
“Most of the information like that (regarding sexual misconduct) that we have seen has been from the past.”
Ricken cited the diocese’s approach to fostering a safe environment for kids since 2003
when the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was imposed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
The charter came in the wake of widespread media reports of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests and deacons in the U.S
accountability and prevention of future acts of abuse
The Green Bay diocese requires background checks for all employees and volunteers as well as mandatory safe-environment training for those who may come in contact with children and at-risk adults
The diocese also trains nearly 30,000 children in its schools and enrolled in religious education on how to be safe
recognize signs of abuse and how to report it
“I think our people really have wrapped themselves around this,” said Stefanic
the assistance coordinator and safe environment department director for the diocese
“I always say it’s the most important ministry in our diocese
is protecting our children and our vulnerable adults.”
Van Asten said he was molested by a priest from his home parish when they traveled
His church was in a small town west of Stevens Point in the Diocese of La Crosse
Van Asten said his accused perpetrator “instilled a deep sense of shame” in the teen after their one and only encounter
“He left me feeling like I was the one who was guilty,” Van Asten said
I’m like … I was (left to feel like) this really bad person
I wouldn’t allow myself to rethink the situation
to understand that I was the one who was the victim.”
Van Asten finally spoke of the abuse when he met with a Catholic priest in Steven Point in the mid-1980s
The priest encouraged Van Asten to tell his parents and his siblings about the abuse at the hands of their church pastor
Van Asten’s family was indifferent to his account
a dismissive sentiment reflective of many Catholics for several decades when any thought of misconduct by church leaders was broached
“It was what the priest said goes; they could do no wrong.”
He stayed quiet again about the abuse for nearly another 20 years
during which time the father of three moved to the Appleton area and remarried
He let his second wife know about the incident after they started dating
Van Asten attended a few events hosted by the Green Bay diocese that addressed sexual abuse and healing in recent years
fear and also anger by what he experienced on those occasions
Van Asten started to open up and share with others his horrific story
He made a pivotal connection with Stefanic at the first healing service hosted by Ricken two years ago
she invites those in attendance who are victims of abuse to stay afterward and meet with any number of advocates there — whether it’s her
“(Ricken) wants as many people as possible to come forward because if they don’t come forward we can’t help them heal,” Stefanic said
Ricken condemned sexual abuse by a person of authority in the church
more evil than taking advantage of a child," Ricken said
Stefanic is the first point of contact with the diocese for reporting sexual abuse of a minor who is now an adult
She said abuse of children presently younger than 18 should be reported to civil authorities and then the diocese
Stefanic worked with Van Asten on reporting his abuse from 50 years earlier to the La Crosse diocese
Van Asten said resolution came last summer
when he received a letter of apology from the bishop there after a diocesan board heard and reviewed Van Asten's case
‘We believe that (the abuse) had happened,’” said Van Asten

APPLETON — Voters in District 4 have three choices for their next representative on the Common Council
The candidates for the nonpartisan office are Christopher Quann
20 primary election will advance to the April 2 general election
Van Asten was in a similar situation in 2022, when he advanced from a three-way primary election before losing to Israel Del Toro in the general election
the candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire to explain why they're running for office

Smith: The past few years I've seen we need strong
When I learned this alderman position was open
Van Asten: I've been self-employed in the IT industry since 1997
What makes you the better candidate in this race?Quann: My love for this city
my previous careers in architecture and nursing
and my past experience community building give me the passion and skills to identify our city's needs and to build teams to get things done
Smith: I am a candidate with level-headed leadership skills
and I will work to keep Appleton moving forward with vibrant public spaces and opportunities
The position of alderman requires not just technical skills
but a vision for what this city can become based on experience living in this city
Van Asten: I have a lifetime of leaving things better than I found them
I still volunteer at my daughters' high school
which means all who live here are important to me
Quann: People I have been talking to want safe streets
strong neighborhoods and an environment that promotes small businesses
These concerns and many others depend on embracing our most central asset: the Fox River
I would strive to create safe streets and trails so that people can better enjoy this place we live
I would strive to create a strong city that welcomes everyone
Smith: I'm just beginning to knock on doors and talk to a cross-section of people in my district
and much of this is making Appleton a vibrant and open city that will attract young people to stay and raise a family
With these changes we have to make sure that the city remains affordable and that our neighborhoods remain safe

Leopold van Asten and his top horse VDL Groep Zidane pictured at Stoeterij Duyselshof
That’s a game Leopold van Asten has become pretty good at throughout his career
Leopold made not only one step forwards - but more a giant leap when he jumped his way back on to the Dutch team and could head for the European Championships on VDL Groep Zidane
hoping for a ticket to Rio - of course in his own composed and matter-of-fact way.
We meet Leopold at the breathtaking Stoeterij Duyselshof
which he has been lucky enough to call his home stable for the past 15 years
Located in the little town of Duizel in the Netherlands
the stable offers everything a rider could dream of in the most idyllic location
The property belongs to Wim van der Leegte - owner of VDL Groep and a passionate horse man - who Van Asten has been working for since the idea of Stoeterij Duyselshof was born.
when Van der Leegte started his adventure at Stoeterij Duyselshof he sensibly chose to ask the then 24-year-old Leopold if he would like to work at the showjumping stable as the main rider
“Wim wanted to start up with a young rider
At this time I was working for Henk Nooren
and had gotten some good basics to bring with me to Duyselshof,” Leopold says about how he ended up with what seems like a dream job.
Although far less experienced than other candidates for the job
Leopold had already proven his talent as a junior and young rider
With horses being a part of his life since he was a little boy
it was no coincidence that Van Asten chose the career he did though
and when I was five years old I started at the local riding school
I was given my first pony,” Leopold tells.
To get to his first shows he would ride his pony to the centre of the village where he lived
There a collecting point had been organised for a big truck to pick up him and the pony
On they went with other kids and other ponies
Leopold was joined by his younger brother Mathijs as well
and our father started taking us to the shows and supporting us in every way he could
Our parents have been amazing to the two of us,” Leopold says.
As a junior rider Leopold won the Dutch Championships and also went to the 1993 European Championships on Henk Nooren’s Candeleria
who van Asten ended 5th with at the European Championships in 1994
it came as no surprise that Leopold chose to work with horses rather than continue with additional education at university
and I got the opportunity to work for Henk Nooren - and of course I took it," he says.
It was the whole package from A-Z; from managing the stables to training the horses
so I quickly understood the importance of taking responsibility and to take care,” Leopold says.
Home made: Leopold and the 7-year-old stallion VDL Groep Spriritivo
who is out of VDL Groep Think Twice and by Indoctro
the route to success following Leopold's arrival at Stoeterij Duyselshof was short
In 2003 he became Dutch Champion on VDL Groep Think Twice
and went on to jump at the Dutch team at the European Championships
The year after Leopold did his first Olympic Games - with VDL Groep Flèche Rouge - in Athens. “It all started with Think Twice,” Leopold says looking back
“I was lucky because there were made a few investments in some good horses from the beginning
soon we started playing with the idea to do our own breeding for the sport
We started up breeding around ten foals a year and then also bought some
Now we breed with our own mares that were good in the sport
and we have some fantastic young horses coming out of these mothers like Spiritivo out of VDL Groep Think Twice
Casanova out of VDL Groep Navarett and C Tara Z out of VDL Groep Comtessa - and there are lots more to come,” he smiles
It consists of Leopold’s beautiful sport stable that houses around 10-12 horses depending on the circumstances and then - a short drive away - is the yard where the young horses are trained and the breeding stud itself
The stable for the younger horses houses no less than seventy horses
all with the best blood lines in the world - and right by is the stud where the young horses stay in perfect conditions until they are three years old and ready to get into work.
“When the horses are around six or seven-years-old
we make a selection of which horses go into my stable for me to bring on further and hopefully into the top sport
Like everyone else I always look for scope
carefulness and that they have the right mentality - you need a horse that wants to jump clear. I can pick first here so to say - I am very lucky in that way - but I am also dependent on the breeding program we have
I try to follow the horses from they are young though; be present when they are in the final stages of free jumping and looking at videos from the shows to see how they develop."
Van Asten believes in this way of approaching the sport; "I believe that having the horses from they are born and being there all the way is a big advantage
You know the whole history of the horses then
what they have experienced and gone through
Van Asten with VDL Groep Alexia Z
Stoeterij Duyselshof is by now a huge success story
Leopold has also had to deal with setbacks during his fifteen years there - and it has not always been easy
"My goal has always been to do the five stars and to represent my country
as a rider and a horse man you also have to be realistic and accept that this is not always possible
it has sometimes been hard - and I have gone through periods of time where I had no luck at all
For example I had such a great horse in VDL Groep Santana B
but she was out with an injury again and again during the years I had her
We tried everything we possibly could for her
and to make it possible for her to do the big sport - but in the end I had to let her go and accept that she had to be a breeding mare here instead,” Leopold says about the mare that has a very special place in his heart
“During this time I found it was better to take a few steps back
pull out of the biggest shows and build up younger horses to move forwards again at a later stage,” Van Asten says.
After a few years of patiently bringing up a younger group of horses on the two
three and four star shows Leopold jumped back into the spotlight this year being crowned Dutch Champion and also found himself back on the orange team heading for the Europeans
The one who currently leads him on the way is VDL Groep Zidane
who according to his rider "has been quite a challenge"
The now 11-year-old gelding came to Leopold two years ago
having jumped up to 1.50 level with Eric van der Vleuten - who also has a close relation to Stoeterij Duyselshof together with his son Maikel.
“Zidane is special; a horse with a lot of character,” Leopold explains
He has all the qualities you need in a top show jumper; he is super careful
was that he had a lot of opinions and he liked to show them
I quickly realised it was a fine line with Zidane; he needs to respect you - but on the other hand he needs to trust you and be able to relax so you can never put too much pressure on him
Somehow we have found the balance together
and I have to say that my groom Aurelie also has done an amazing job with him to make him what he is today,” Van Asten says displaying the understanding he seems to provide for every horse he has in his stable.
Enjoying a moment with his 2004 Olympic Games ride VDL Groep Flèche Rouge - now 22 years old
“I am very happy to be back on the Dutch team,” Van Asten smiles as he talks about his summer season which included winning the Furusyyia FEI Nations Cup in Falsterbo as well as getting called in for duties in Aachen
that is for me the biggest thing of our sport
and I made it as a reserve for the team so hopefully - and if everything goes according to plan - I can aim for Rio next year."
And for the next years it looks even better for Leopold
In the stable are talents that thrive from the time the Dutch rider has spend with them; the 9-year-old VDL Groep Beauty by For Pleasure
the 8-year-old home bred VDL Groep C Tara Z by Crown Z and the 7-year-old VDL Groep Spiritivo - also a home bred - by Indoctro
Leopold takes us around to see each and everyone of them; it’s clear they are special to him - having competed Tara and Spiritivo’s mothers at the highest level it feels like Leopold is introducing us to his own family as he takes us around the stable
some big words come from a man who seem to never really use those kind of superlatives
To ride such talented horses every day is of course an honour
and then get the proof that your feeling was right is another amazing thing I get to experience here
To see a horse I believed in fulfil it’s potential; that is probably the most satisfying part of my job!"

and a steadily growing crew from Byford has been riding the surge and bringing in the bling
Byford riders cleaned up at this year’s maxed-out Downhill State Series with seasoned speedster Alan Forde taking the top podium place in the Masters 1/2 division and long-time mate and riding buddy Matt Garrett finishing up second in the Masters 3/4 division
Alan’s daughter Asten proved her mettle this season and finished up third in the U15 Female division
But it was newcomer Brock Williamson who really turned heads this year after smashing his 59-rider strong competition to take out the U17 Male division
“At the season opener in Albany he just screamed down in a flash of black and white on this tiny-wheeled bike that’s pretty much obsolete
and left everyone wondering where this kid had come from,” Matty said
“And we were all just jumping up and down cheering him on – we were stoked,” Alan said
Brock finished off his near-perfect season with another win at the Peel Downhill State Championships at the newly-minted Tom’s Crossing trail in Dwellingup last month
Alan just missed out on a similar shutout performance
coming in second place to a first-time rider from the east coast: “I was stoked for him though”
While Alan’s son Roman – “an absolute weapon” – came in third in the Under 13 division
who fell into the sport when he ventured out to “see who his son was hanging out with”
also finished in third in the relatively new e-bike division
but he’s one to watch in 2025 after setting himself up as a consistent top 10 rider this year
This is not the first time Byford has seen results
Alan and Matty have done alright for themselves over the past three seasons
“Compared to other crews Byford is right up there,” Alan said
And the Darling Scarp above Byford is famous as being the training ground of two-time world downhill champion Sam Hill
He’s inspired pretty much everyone,” Matty said
And now we’re seeing all the young ones come up and dominate,” Alan said
“And there’s been a lot of local support too
He said he sees mountain biking as a safer alternative to motorbikes
and is thrilled to see his kids take up the sport
picked up the sport as a compromise to himself after a motorbike accident
But downhill is definitely not for the faint-hearted
Far from the image of lycra-clad dads pedalling serenely through wooded glades
downhill is packed with thrills and spills
“When you’re at the gates getting ready for the drop
you’re putting your life on the line,” Alan said
“You end up with grazes on your shoulders from skimming trees
And you’re doing jumps sometimes as big as a two-storey building
and drops taller than a truck – if you come off that you’re breaking bones in both legs for sure
“You’ve gotta be wired; your reaction times have to be so switched on.”
and often there’s only three seconds between the top 15 riders,” Rob explains
“People ask us all the time why we’re doing this still at our age – it’s the rush,” Matty said
“And the atmosphere is unreal – it feels like you’re a superstar
You’ve got hundreds of people lining the track banging and crashing
revving bladeless chainsaws – the feeling is just like nothing else.”
But it’s not all about the high-adrenaline antics
The crew explain there’s a real sense of camaraderie found riding trails together set against a backdrop of exquisite natural beauty
“There’s something about being out in nature like that – it’s the biggest mental relief ever,” Alan said
“And it’s awesome because there’s no drama about age gaps – everyone’s just as passionate
You can be a 14-year-old kid riding the same track beside a 40-year-old dude and it’s not weird,” Matty said
“And there’s good banter – there’s no sledging
I reckon that’s why more people are doing it.”
The boost in popularity in mountain biking disciplines has been pretty even across the board since COVID
making it one of the fastest growing recreational activities around the world
Regional towns across Tasmania and Victoria have been banking their buck on mountain biking as a lucrative future for local tourism
with the state government splashing unprecedented amounts of cash on new trails
particularly in the Perth Hills and the South West
And the gains are starting to show: in two weeks Collie will host the AusCycling Mountain Bike Enduro National Championships
bringing more than 1000 riders to the coal town
there has been a general perception that WA simply can’t compete with the downhill potential of the east coast and its Great Dividing Range
The epicentre of the nation’s downhill escapades is in Cairns
geographically as far from here as possible
But Alan explains that what WA lacks in elevation
it more than makes up for in “technical terrain”
“We’ve got the gnarliest tracks around,” he said
“It would be good to see the downhill nationals here next year at Tom’s Crossing and some outside industry sponsors come on board.”
