forward Jesper Bratt has decided to undergo shoulder surgery and he will not participate in the IIHF World Championships for Sweden Both Hughes and Bratt are expected to make full recoveries to be available for the 2025 New Jersey Devils Training Camp This audio recording is part of the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings 2025 Special Episode of the Foresight Africa podcast AXEL VAN TROTSENBURG: My name is Axel van Trotsenberg I’m the senior managing director at the World Bank LANDRY SIGNÉ: Thank you so much for joining us today what are your key takeaways from the 2025 Spring Meetings is that we have been single-mindedly focused on the jobs agenda largely also driven by the concern that not enough jobs will be created in the developing countries and that could leave many youths without jobs in the future and that should be a common concern to all of us And the good news is that that resonated enormously with our shareholders primarily the developing countries clearly concerned about this see that this jobs agenda needs to be addressed We got very strong support in the development committee for that agenda and we are taking this forward and I’m very pleased about that outcome Second outcome is this is an organization that is also of course providing a lot of financing to developing countries and here half of the financing comes from the International Development Association—that is the fund for our poorest countries And we had successfully negotiated a big package at the end of last year that needed now to go through formal processes 147 countries have now voted in favor of the IDA21 Replenishment Resolution This is important because that allows us to start implementing this package as of July 1 Then the other thing that we have been showcasing here in the MC [Main Complex] is clearly the knowledge agenda and the data agenda that we are pursuing but also promoting a discussion on key development issues this time clearly centered around the jobs agenda So it gives people a bit of a sense that we will seek ideas and we hope through that debate that we all rally for action How might the 2025 Spring Meetings shape policy decisions and deliver tangible results across Africa moving forward the the results for Africa are essentially embedded in these IDA replenishments because as you know there we identify the commitments that have been negotiated between borrowing countries What is important here is to say that from the IDA resources like 70% is going to the IDA countries in Africa And actually we have been delivering on that together with our partner countries in Africa and that is the good news The Foresight Africa podcast is brought to you by the Brookings Podcast Network Send your feedback and questions to podcasts at Follow along here to catch today's action BOSTON — Ilia Malinin could attempt as many as seven quadruple jumps in his long program Saturday as he seeks to defend his world championship title One of them could be the famous jump that only he can pull off: The quad axel is the only person in figure skating history to successfully land the quad axel in international competition − a milestone for a sport in which jumps have played an increasingly important role part of the moniker that he adopted several years ago when he changed his Instagram handle to "quadg0d." And you're sure to hear a lot more about the quad axel as the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina approach What makes it that much more difficult than any other quadruple jump and everything else you need to know about the jump There are six types of jumps in figure skating: Toe loop The differences between the jumps lie in the method of takeoff and landing the first three jumps on the above list − toe loop in which the skater uses the toe pick on his or her skate to elevate off the ice The axel is unique because it is the only jump in which a skater takes off facing forward and lands backwards All of the other jumps have a backwards takeoff The "quad" part of the quad axel indicates that there are four rotations in the jump are extremely difficult − even for most Olympic skaters And the axel is the most difficult of the jumps because of the front-facing takeoff This means the quad axel actually consists of 4.5 rotations No skater has ever landed a quintuple jump But Mexican skater Donovan Carrillo said there's way more to the mythical nature of the quad axel than that "It’s a jump where you start from one foot But you only have less than a second to achieve those four and a half rotations," Carrillo explained it’s so crazy that (Malinin) is doing that jump Malinin first landed the quad axel in competition at the U.S International Figure Skating Classic in Lake Placid fully-rotated quad axel to be performed in competition it’s pretty easy for me to figure out how to get the right timing and everything to have it be a good attempt," Malinin said afterwards "To do it in competition is a different story because you have nerves and pressure that can get in the way of that What is the point value of a quad axel in figure skating? The quad axel has a base value of 12.5 points which is a full point more than the second most difficult jump But skaters can also earn points for grade of execution on top of the base value depending on the crispness and technical elements of the jump Some in the figure skating community have argued that the quad axel is actually undervalued given that only one person has ever done it It's similar to the debate around Simone Biles and her famed Yurchenko double pike vault There are times he certainly makes it look easy But in a conference call before nationals earlier this year he said he and the quad axel "have a really big love-hate relationship with each other." "There's days where it cooperates and I feel really confident about it and there's some days where I still need to work on it a little bit and touch it up," Malinin said "It's been pretty normal into my training routine in practices So it really does still [require] that energy and that mental focus that I need to put into it." Both prospects did quite well in their debuts Sandin-Pellikka found the scoresheet on the power play on a pass across the blue line to an open Amadeus Lombardi for the team’s only goal Brandsegg-Nygard seemed to have developed some chemistry with Nate Danielson though they were playing on different lines Brandsegg-Nygard did get a couple of shots vs but I’ll be looking for him to have more of an impact in this game 4:05 – Sandin-Pellikka is getting lots of ice time early in this game He broke up a few Iowa attempts early with sticks in the lane and even had a couple of chances for a steal 5:39 – Brandsegg-Nygard forced a turnover on the forecheck The puck made its way to the point then was flung towards the net for a redirect chance It didn’t go in but made it’s way to the corner Brandsegg-Nygard has a powerful/explosive stride and he used it to get in front of the defender and body position on the puck The Iowa defender took him down before touching the puck 10:29 – Wild Goal 0-1 – Ondrej Becher picked up the dish from his defenseman in the left corner behind the Griffins net and saw traffic heading up the near-side boards so he decided to try a cross-ice pass through the center of the zone That’s a big no-no unless you’re absolutely sure it’s not going to get picked off who made a nice skate-to-stick move right near the hash marks It was Mistelbacher’s first pro point in his second pro game 20:00 - The first period ends at 0-1 in favor of the Wild The Griffins did not generate much offense in the first period of this game They were getting outshot 12-2 at one point then clawed back to a more respectable 13-8 No high-danger chances through the first 20 minutes 10:00 – The Griffins started the period on the penalty kill and took two more penalties in the first 10 minutes of the second period Neither Sandin-Pellikka or Brandsegg-Nygard play on the penalty kill so neither of them got much ice time There was a shortened power play of about a minute but the Griffins didn’t get much zone time Sandin-Pellikka got one shot away on the rush and there was a rebound but Iowa cleared the puck back to Griffins’ territory 20:00 – The second period ended with no goals The Griffins did fine killing off the three penalties and did start to push back in the second half of the second period Brandsegg-Nygard has not had an opportunity in this game but it’s not because he is not playing well Forwards need their teammates to generate scoring chances Nate Danielson had a shift with Joe Snivley and Austin Watson where Watson was set up beautifully twice Watson drove the puck into the right pad of the goaltender a one-time chance with no block and quite a lot of net to work with I can’t say there would have been better results with Brandsegg-Nygard instead of Watson that I would have rather seen Brandsegg-Nygard get the opportunity instead of Watson 7:45 – Griffins Goal 1-1 – The play started behind the Griffins net William Wallinder made the breakout pass to Amadeus Lombardi through center Lombardi passes to Dominic Shine on the right side then Shine passes through the seam to Sheldon Dries on the left flank He was tracking a man with the puck back into his own zone stepped in front of him to prevent the net-front drive The Iowa player held onto Sandin-Pellikka’s left arm and went down Sandin-Pellikka’s right arm was waving about to show the ref he wasn’t holding but still got the penalty called against him 20:00 – The Griffins secure third place in the division by earning one point in regulation Assuring a Central Division semi-final matchup with the Texas Stars in the Calder Cup Playoffs 2:34 – Jack Campbell makes two spectacular saves Iowa’s 22 carried the puck in the Griffins zone on the left side was streaming through center in front of his check paddle down in case Clark tried to go to the backhand and resorted to the double pad stack on the forehand shot the rebound kicked directly to 22 gliding through the slot 22 elevated the puck to the top of the net but Campbell kicked his left leg and pad hard up into the air and stopped the puck with his back and head flat on the ice A+ save and extra credit for the follow-up save in the traditional butterfly afterwards to keep his team in the game 4:00 – Brandsegg-Nygard was sent in behind the defense on a pass by Amadeus Lombardi but it was at the end of a shift that was spent mostly defending The Iowa player caught up and made a nice stick lift to break up the opportunity Griffins SO Goal 1-0 – Nate Danielson faked to the backhand The goaltender bit and Danielson slid the puck along this ice passed the outstretched pad of the goaltender for the first goal of the shootout Sandin-Pellikka had an opportunity to end the game with a SO goal Iowa failed to score with their third shooter but the Griffins got it into gear about half-way through It was the second game of a road back-to-back with a four-hour bus ride in between The Griffins still found a way to get the win against a team that had nothing to play for except putting out a good showing for their fans Especially the saves from Campbell and the breakaway chance by Brandsegg-Nygard If you want to see Sandin-Pellikka and Brandsegg-Nygard play this season Game 1 of the AHL Central Division Semi-Final is Tuesday April 29th vs the Texas Stars at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids It can also be found online at www.flohockey.tv © 2025 Minute Media - Marvin Perez from Colonial Capital Humane Society described Axel as a dog who "loves attention" and enjoys being the center of it. "He does really well in car rides and loves to snuggle," Perez said. Axel was found as a stray in Lenoir County and has shown a strong dislike for being alone, even jumping out of his kennel to be with another dog. Currently residing at the Colonial Capital Humane Society in New Bern, Axel is vaccinated and up to date on his shots. Although he is heartworm positive, he is set to begin treatment in the coming weeks. Axel's adoption fee is $215, and he is eagerly waiting to find his forever home. Lehmann Published 26 February 2025 in Governance • 7 min read Imagine you’re driving down the highway when These signs aren’t just inconvenient; they’re your car’s way of telling you that something needs attention before it escalates into a costly or dangerous problem and you could be stranded by the roadside – or worse early warning signs for an organization’s culture work much the same way Small signals – an executive cutting a discussion short a refusal to put uncomfortable topics on the agenda or an uneasy dynamic between the CEO and other team members – are often the first indicators of a deeper problem These signs don’t always spell immediate disaster but they can point to underlying cultural issues could lead to bigger challenges down the road A prime example of a cultural unwillingness to escalate matters posing grave economic and reputational risk is Credit Suisse The bank racked up $5.5bn in losses in 2021 after it repeatedly ignored warning signs that investment fund Archegos was heading for impending disaster A 165-page postmortem analysis found conspicuous signs that risks were mounting: the fund persistently breached risk limits and ignored requests for new margin proposals Although junior risk controllers raised the alarm these were ignored by more senior bankers who overrode safety limits and failed to raise concerns with more senior executives and the board until just days before Archegos’ collapse your job is to encourage a culture of openness where people feel just as free to share their ideas as voice their criticism and doubts with employees pursuing narrow objectives like growth and profitability at the expense of the integrity and values needed to sustain it can you help to foster a culture of transparency and trust effective performance assessments should include at least two key dimensions: results and behavior Measuring behavior can involve gathering input from the control functions and across the organization ensuring it is not based on isolated incidents I observed how you shut down colleagues who raised concerns about the long-term objectives.” This approach reinforces accountability and encourages a culture where ethical behavior is recognized alongside measurable performance and even mid-level managers notice issues that senior leadership might overlook They are more likely to spot emerging problems speaking up isn’t always easy as the Archegos example illustrates Many employees experience conflicting pressures: the desire to contribute weighed against the fear of repercussions; the impulse to raise concerns tempered by the worry of being labeled as disruptive Leaders should actively reward those who report failures or bravely raise concerns even if it puts them in a vulnerable position Learning to welcome rather than shoot the messenger is key While many large organizations have whistleblower lines a lack of activity on these lines can itself be a warning sign potentially pointing to a culture of fear that prevents employees from sounding the alarm People are far more likely to follow what you do than what you say this means ensuring that your behavior matches the organization’s values and culture If you’re striving for a more inclusive environment examine your conduct in meetings: do you allow certain voices to dominate or do you make an effort to include perspectives that are often overlooked Following through on these values is crucial It’s pointless lamenting a lack of diversity on executive teams if no tangible steps are taken to increase the representation of women and minorities you hold ultimate responsibility for hiring and replacing the CEO and senior executives should unethical behavior persist explore how you can best support and guide them toward responsible action Senior executives operate under intense pressure Look for ways to alleviate some of these pressures perhaps by facilitating smoother relationships with key investors reinforce the organization’s values in your interactions to shepherd leaders onto the right path Responsible leadership demands a careful balancing act among competing priorities and diverse stakeholders When an organization has spent years prioritizing one goal to the detriment of its values and ethical standards restoring integrity and trust cannot happen overnight Persistent issues and scandals rarely stem from isolated individuals; rather they tend to signal deeper systemic problems that require a holistic solution True change calls for a commitment to transparency – where problems are not swept under the rug but brought to light for all to see By examining and addressing underlying issues honestly and comprehensively organizations can foster a resilient culture rooted in integrity and respect Lehmann is a former Chairman of Credit Suisse with over 25 years of experience at group executive board and board of directors’ level in the banking and insurance sector He is Affiliate Professor for Business Administration and Service Management and Chairman of the Executive Board of the Institute of Insurance Economics at the University of St 28 April 2025 • by Jordi Gual in Governance Companies pursuing ESG goals increasingly face a backlash from shareholders who fear a drop in financial performance Changes to corporate governance may be needed to restore trust on both sides of the.. 27 March 2025 • by Jennifer Jordan, Alexander Fleischmann in Governance Take our quiz to see if you're well-placed to implement new European rules on boardroom equality... 26 March 2025 • by Didier Cossin, Yukie Saito in Governance Executive Vice President of People and Culture at Neste – the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – and a board member of Finnair 18 March 2025 • by Diana Markaki-Bartholdi in Governance New EU legislation requires stronger female representation on corporate boards. boyhood club Manchester United Aston Villa have completed a third signing on deadline day, bringing in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi on loan until the end of the season the Premier League club Frenchman possesses a rapid turn of speed and is a factor in stage races and one-day events criticized the Beltway publication for running a story reliant on Hamas casualty figures Main entrance of the Axel Springer high-rise Israel’s decision to strike Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday ending a fragile ceasefire after negotiations to release the hostages held by the Palestinian terrorist group had effectively collapsed has reignited a debate over media coverage of the conflict as it enters a new phase of escalation.  distributed a push notification on Monday morning that read “A wave of Israeli airstrikes has killed more than 400 people raising the prospect of a return to all-out war,” without specifying that the health ministry is run by Hamas or noting any reason that may have driven Israel to take action.  Most notably, the widely read Beltway news outlet Politico is drawing particularly fierce criticism from an outspoken board member of its parent company, Axel Springer, the German publishing giant whose mission statement has long espoused support for Israel, among other so-called essentials reporters are expected to uphold in their coverage.  Martin Varsavsky, a Jewish tech entrepreneur who is based in Madrid, Spain, took direct aim at Politico on Tuesday in an unusually critical social media comment about the site having run an article by the Associated Press emphasizing that Israel’s renewed airstrikes had killed “at least 200” Palestinians in Gaza.  “I consider this article one-sided Hamas support,” Varsavsky, a longtime member of Axel Springer’s supervisory board “It fails to mention that the airstrikes were aimed at eliminating top Hamas military and that Israel was successful at doing so It also quotes casualty figures given by Hamas that are not believed to be accurate.” Varsavsky did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday Politico’s own flagship Playbook newsletter on Monday led with the AP article “The surprise attack shattered a period of relative calm during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and raised the prospect of a full return to fighting in a 17-month war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and caused widespread destruction across Gaza,” before Playbook author Jack Blanchard added his own assessment: “Expect plenty of fallout today.” Varsavky’s unvarnished social media comments were the first to publicly surface simmering editorial tensions between Axel Springer and Politico which Axel Springer acquired in 2021 for more than $1 billion amid a broader push into global markets Axel Springer has struggled to balance its long-standing commitment to the Jewish state enshrined in a set of hallowed principles devised by its eponymous founder more than 50 years ago as Politico has turned a distinctly critical eye on Israel in the wake of Hamas’ Oct The news site has frequently challenged its parent company’s approach to the Jewish state by giving special prominence to detractors of Israel over pro-Israel voices or even neutral foreign policy experts, while publishing columns suggesting Israel is a human rights violator among other sources of apparent disconnect between the two organizations “Mathias is a radical centrist and that annoys people on the right and the left,” Varsavsky said in a social media post last year “If you want to understand more about his views think of the views of our publications Business Insider and Politico: at the center.” In a statement to Jewish Insider last March, a spokesperson for Axel Springer said that Politico’s “editorial independence” is “our first priority,” while adding that “independent critical journalism is not at odds with our essentials which simply affirm the right of Israel to exist.” however,  raised questions about whether his sentiments reflect the company’s own internal assessment of Politico or if he was speaking solely for himself senior vice president and global head of in speaking publicly about editorial issues did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday Some recent editorial hires suggest that Axel Springer is more broadly working to bolster its commitment to its values, as Döpfner has vowed to double down on its support for Israel amid a resurgence of antisemitism in the U.S the company announced that it had launched what it called a global reporters network to “enrich the offerings” of Politico and other media properties owned by Axel Springer Among the company’s first hires were the journalists Jamie Kirchick and Ayaan Hirsi Ali The company said in a statement that its network “will be expanded in the coming months” and will be helmed by a rotating crew of editors beginning with John Harris who called the initiative “an exciting development” and said it will “bring great additional value” for news consumers Döpfner did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday Axel Springer’s editorial values have largely distinguished the company from other mainstream American media outlets But some publications that have faced accusations of unbalanced Middle East coverage are also showing receptivity to addressing such criticism — indicating something of a nascent tonal shift within the industry a spokesperson told JI on Monday that the paper was “aware of the alleged social media posts” and is now “looking into” the matter Copyright ©
