A wave of unease hit the Dutch town of Baarn on Wednesday as all primary schools closed their doors following a disturbing anonymous threat
the message reportedly warned of a ‘horrific’ attack — strong enough for heads to act fast
Police say they haven’t found any concrete evidence the threat is serious
schools across the town decided not to take any risks
School leaders contacted parents on Tuesday evening to explain the decision
and Koningin Wilhelminaschool — were locked
One parent told local media they were ‘shocked and anxious’ but ‘grateful schools took quick action’
Baarn’s two secondary schools chose a different path
Het Baarnsch Lyceum also received a similar message but stayed open after speaking with police
Police have ramped up patrols around all schools as a precaution
but right now there’s nothing to suggest a real or immediate threat,” a spokesperson said
and no further details about where the message came from have been released

All primary schools in Baarn will remain closed on Wednesday after a report of a threatening message. Schools reportedly received an email threatening to commit “the most horrific attack in Dutch history,” but a police spokesperson declined to confirm this.
According to the police, “there is currently no indication that this is a serious threat.” A police spokesperson would not disclose information about the nature of the threat, or where it originated. The case is under investigation.
The parents of the enrolled students have been informed. A spokesperson for primary school NBS also would not say what the threat entailed, or whether all parents were reached in time.
The gates at primary school Guido de Brès were locked, and there were no police officers present. The Amalia Astroschool and the Koningin Wilhelminaschool were also closed. A spokesperson for primary school Aloysius only confirmed that a threat was received and that the school is closed today.
The two secondary schools in the Utrecht town, Het Baarnsch Lyceum and the Waldheim-mavo, were open for classes on Wednesday morning. A threat was received at the Lyceum school as well, a spokesperson confirmed, but after consultation with the police it was decided to allow classes to take place anyway.
The parents have been informed. The police said they were conducting extra surveillance at all schools.

are offering residents the option to create voluntary firework-free zones in their neighborhoods
While the popularity of this option varies by location
several municipalities are making efforts to help residents limit the noise and potential hazards associated with fireworks
19 municipalities have implemented an overall firework ban
designated zones have been established where fireworks are prohibited
particularly around sensitive locations such as healthcare facilities and parks
local governments are allowing residents to take the lead in determining where fireworks should be banned
residents have the opportunity to pick up posters from the local town hall or download and print them
please no fireworks," serve as a request for people setting off fireworks near those areas to be considerate of both people and animals
A spokesperson for the town said that by just before Christmas
but added that most residents tend to collect them in the days leading up to the New Year
has seen more demand for the voluntary firework-free zone initiative
These zones typically encompass entire streets
other municipalities have experienced less enthusiasm for the voluntary firework-free zone program
residents can pick up a sign at the city office to declare an area "firework-free." Yet
only two requests for firework-free zones have been submitted
no requests for firework-free zones have been made this year
Municipalities are emphasizing that residents must come to an agreement among themselves about firework regulations within their neighborhoods
local authorities have made it clear that they will not enforce any rules if fireworks are set off within the designated zones
"Make clear agreements with your neighbors about not setting off fireworks in your area," states Leidschendam-Voorburg's website
"The municipality and police cannot enforce the agreements in voluntary firework-free zones and rely on the community’s self-regulation."

This was stated by the Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans during his speech at a security conference, Ukrinform reports, citing Defense News
“Russia is seen ready to execute a ‘large scale’ troop move about one year after the conclusion of a ceasefire or peace in Ukraine,” Brekelmans said
During the conference in the Dutch town of Baarn
he asked his audience to imagine President Vladimir Putin deploying hundreds of thousands of troops on the border with the Baltic states for large-scale military exercises
Ukraine's experience shows that it takes only a week to transition from drills to an actual attack
raising the question of whether such movements would indeed be exercises or preparations for an invasion
The Dutch threat assessment is even harsher than previous warnings from the European Commission
Brekelmans noted that Russia is boosting its defense industry
He warned that once the war in Ukraine ends
the Kremlin will have more available resources for new acts of aggression
The Netherlands already has troops stationed in Lithuania and F-35 fighter jets deployed in Estonia
The country is also preparing for potential participation in a European mission in Ukraine
the Netherlands aims to accelerate the delivery of its promised financial support to Ukraine

Escher — he of never-ending stairwells
and math-minded imagineer of infinite nesting universes — is an iconic image-maker who is almost universally recognized outside the art world
criminally unrepresented in the art world canon
not at all the sort of person one might suppose him to be
has inspired films from Labyrinth to Inception
and graced every college dorm room wall — but it was decades after his death in 1972 before the world finally started getting proper museum shows dedicated to his career
In the new documentary film from Robin Lutz
we find out just how he felt about that — and about a great deal more besides
Journey to Infinity’s imagery is an inventive combination of works and animations of them
spliced with vintage photographs and modern-day artistic interpretations of his most iconic compositions
The narration is almost entirely down to Escher himself — or rather
voiced by beloved British actor Stephen Fry
The script is composed from his extensive diaries
and lightly punctuated with interviews with his adult children
It deals with subjects ranging from his eternal desire to “visualize infinity,” to his consternation at the popularity of his images among drug-addled hippies
to his suspicion that his estrangement from the art community was because whereas
gorgeous choreography of the schisms and interlocutions between art and mathematics is the most recurrent theme throughout the film (other than his hatred of hippies)
To hear in Escher’s own words the step-by-step evolution of his vision and the range of his own studies is a marvelous treat
Escher was at heart a printmaker whose impossibly elaborate and finely detailed works are somehow both futurist and baroque
the results of a mastery of analog craft and abstract thought
It may come as a surprise to those who grew up loving Escher’s work that the originals are neither paintings nor drawings
It may also be a bit shocking to confront his curmudgeonly disposition
Fry performs his words with an infusion of wry humanism
and grown children who appreciate the impact of his legacy
Escher Company B.V.- Baarn – the Netherlands
the film does not function as a useful introduction to Escher from a conventional documentary point of view
Its premise works only for those who already know the art
and the absence of the expected art historians
and publishers who show up to outline the artist’s legacy is a noticeable one
the absence of those voices leaves all the more room for Escher’s own to ring through
And while there may be a lack of canonical presentations on a suitable scale in our institutions
and internet browser in the world is well stocked
inventive hybrid of documentary and monologue is dedicated to the exploration of what we don’t know about one of the best-known artists in the world

The Netherlands)It’s an artwork that has been reproduced countless times in popular culture
But behind the familiar picture is a mysterious figure
Alastair Sooke goes in search of MC Escher
It must be one of the most familiar images in modern art: a space-distorting interior that could never exist in reality
dominated by staircases sprouting surreally in all directions
mannequin-like figures walking up and down like members of a religious order calmly going about their daily business
Since the original lithograph was produced in the summer of 1953
Relativity – which belongs to a series of five prints by the same artist also featuring impossible constructions and multiple vanishing points – has been reproduced countless times on posters
how much do most of us really know about its creator
the Dutch printmaker MC Escher (1898-1972)
The truth is that outside his homeland Escher remains something of an enigma
despite the popularity of his fastidious optical illusions
Escher continues to suffer from snobbery within the realm of fine art
where his output is often denigrated as little more than technically accomplished graphic design
it appears that only a single work by Escher belongs to a public collection: the woodcut Day and Night
flying above a flat Dutch landscape in between a pair of rivers
Day and Night was Escher’s most popular print: during the course of his lifetime
painstakingly rendering each impression with the help of a small egg spoon made of bone
as Patrick Elliott of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art points out
even the print of Day and Night in the collection of the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery “was actually acquired by the Geography Department and was transferred to the Museum at a later date”
So who was Escher – and does he deserve the indifferent reputation as a fine artist that fate has dealt him? These are some of the questions posed by The Amazing World of MC Escher
a forthcoming exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh
which also happens to be the artist’s first major UK retrospective
Born in the small city of Leeuwarden in the north of the Netherlands
who was always known in his family as “Mauk”
grew up in a prosperous household as the fifth son of a civil engineer who was a senior official at the Department of Public Works
he had an unhappy time – and his miserable memories of this period of his life had a decisive influence upon many of his later prints
he made a number of works featuring versions of the institution’s dramatic staircase
which he had ascended so frequently as a boy
The resemblance between the school’s staircase in reality and the structures in Escher’s prints is remarkable
Escher enrolled at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem
His father hoped that he would become an architect
who had spotted his talent as a printmaker
when he sketched and came up with ideas for future works (his two visits to the Moorish palace of the Alhambra in Granada were especially important
since they taught him how to work with tessellating patterns)
“He had a severe daily routine mixing working and walking and meeting visitors,” says Micky Piller
the museum devoted to the artist’s works in The Hague
where selections are shown from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum
which has also loaned works to the exhibition in Edinburgh
Escher only became able to support himself solely from art during his late fifties
By then he had discovered his principal theme of perspective-mangling worlds
familiar from works such as Belvedere (1958)
He was also known for executing his prints to a very high level
one gets the impression that this meticulous
as hippies delighted in its supposedly “psychedelic” qualities
that the plant at the centre of Balcony was cannabis.) Yet when Mick Jagger wrote to “Maurits” asking for permission to reproduce one of his pictures on the cover of the Rolling Stones’ album Through the Past Darkly
informing the rock star’s assistant: “Please tell Mr Jagger I am not Maurits to him.” In 1965
Escher also turned down Stanley Kubrick’s request for help on a “fourth-dimensional film” (perhaps 2001: A Space Odyssey)
this doesn’t mean that Escher was humourless
“I like to think he was a rather quiet person
He was open-minded and interested in the world and very dedicated to his art.” Moreover
turning down requests from famous people in other fields didn’t stop his prints having a tremendous impact upon popular culture
Some of his pictures did appear on album covers
including The Scaffold’s L the P and Mott the Hoople’s eponymous debut
They also became a reference point for cartoonists
Escher’s mind-bending visions have provided inspiration for the creators of The Simpsons
as well as film-makers including Jim Henson
whose 1986 film Labyrinth starring David Bowie includes a homage to Relativity
Escher-like dream sequence for his 2010 blockbuster Inception
in which the streets of Paris are seen to fold
So how should we think of Escher – as a purveyor of visual conundrums and curiosities
or a “proper” printmaker working within a venerable tradition
He is sometimes called “a one-man art movement”
and this seems like as good a description as any
because he didn’t associate himself with other tendencies in modern art
including the one – Surrealism – to which he was arguably closest in spirit
He also had few artistic successors: “Although he created something absolutely new,” says Piller
“Escher has not directly influenced any artists.”
Escher was capable of concocting potent images with near-universal appeal – something
“At a time when abstract art was ruling the galleries,” Piller says
“Escher fooled all of us by exploring such abstract ideas as eternity
and the impossible in apparently realistic prints that were amazingly well made
As the general public lost contact with the art world
Escher’s prints seemed simple and easy to understand.”

Dulwich Picture Gallery will bring to London ‘The Amazing World of M
Escher’ (14 October 2015 – 17 January 2016) the first major UK retrospective of original work by the great Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) offering a rare opportunity to rediscover a giant of twentieth-century art and master of illusion and paradox
Escher created some of the most popular images in modern art despite operating quietly at the fringes of the art world
His name instantly conjures up images of hands drawing hands
impossible staircases and distorted self-portraits in mirrored spheres
He succeeded in transforming his observations of reality into fascinating worlds
seducing and enchanting the viewer with drawings and lithographs that
have become part of our visual language - adorning teenagers’ bedrooms and appearing on famous LP covers
Often classed as a graphic illustrator this mesmerising exhibition of original drawings
woodcuts and archive material will highlight his supreme skill as a master draughtsman and unparalleled technical ability
The exhibition comes to Dulwich following its run at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
It will showcase over 100 works as well as previously unseen archive material from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
the show stretches across Escher’s whole career
tracing the periods that inspired his unique creativity
Travel was hugely influential in the development of Escher’s work
taking annual trips through various parts of Italy where
inspired by the mountainous scenery and picturesque towns and buildings
In Still Life with Mirror (1934) for example
we see Escher using surreal illusion perhaps for the first time
When he moved to Switzerland in 1935 and then Belgium in 1938 he worked from images in his mind
Escher focused on the concept of eternity in art - the subject of the well-known lithograph Drawing Hands (1948)
A shift in interest was also prompted when he re-visited the fourteenth-century palace of the Alhambra in Granada
where he became enraptured by the Moorish fortress’ tiled walls of tessellated mosaics
He coined the phrase ‘regular division of the plane’ describing his technique of tessellation which enabled him to express eternity and infinity in a single print
This is no more evident than in the woodcut Metamorphosis II (1939-40)
it has tessellations both simple and complex effortlessly merging into each other; from fish to birds; hives to bees; simple blocks to stretching panoramas which then morph into chess pieces
The technique is also adopted in the extraordinary lithograph Reptiles (1943)
This play between the two dimensional and the three dimensional
Escher’s world is one of playful imagination and the unexpected
executed with mathematic precision to create impossible
timeless realities that would inspire amazement in the viewer
He often communicated with – and absorbed much from – academics
most notably the British-born mathematicians H.S.M
Coxeter (1907-2003) and Sir Roger Penrose (b
Both were quick to grasp the complexities and originality of Escher’s work; Penrose was hugely influential in the creation of two of Escher’s most celebrated works
Ascending and Descending (1960) and Waterfall (1961) where
the mathematician’s “impossible triangle” was thrice-slotted into the picture to create a flowing yet physics-defying water structure
Throughout the decades Escher’s work has become truly ubiquitous
pervading popular culture in a way few other artists have achieved
His images have appeared on album covers (Mott The Hoople)
his concepts in films both classic (Labyrinth) and contemporary (Inception)
and countless homages to the artist have surfaced on television (The Simpsons
Family Guy) and most recently in the gaming app Monument Valley
the artist was not always happy about his images being used
He famously turned down a plea from Mick Jagger to design a Rolling Stones album cover
The exhibition has been organised by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh
“There are two qualities one needs to become a great artist: imagination and technique
There aren’t many artists whose work makes your jaw drop
The odd thing isn’t that we are showing Escher’s work
it’s that few people thought of showing him before”
Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery
"It is difficult to think of an artist with a broader appeal than M C Escher
that he creates impossible images that feel utterly real
it’s easy to overlook the astonishing skill that has gone into the drawing
This exhibition is a revelation; the artist defies categorisation
but Escher is a worthy addition to Dulwich’s wonderful series of exhibitions devoted to graphic artists."
The Ferrari Enzo
is one of the most iconic flagships coming from Maranello
a red example was crashed this morning in the Netherlands
the Enzo sustained severe damage on both ends and looks like it will be spending a lot of time in the workshop for repairs before getting back on the road
The incident happened at 11.30 am on Tuesday morning
also known by the name Amsterdamsestraatweg
A witness saw the Ferrari traveling at high speed when the driver lost control with the mid-engined supercar spinning before ending up on a tree
The aftermath is two missing wheels from the passenger’s side
but the carbon-fiber monocoque and the mid-mounted V12 appear to be unaffected

A post shared by @european_carshots
According to local news agency ad.nl
a photographer who happened to be at the spot saw an employee of the Kroymans Ferrari dealership inside the Enzo
indicating that the crash may have happened during a test drive
Other sources claim that a mechanic was driving the car
but nothing has been confirmed yet since a Kroymans Ferrari spokesperson refused to comment on the incident
The name of the dealer was also visible on the license plates that were removed before the supercar was loaded on the tow truck. Unsurprisingly, no Enzo is listed on the dealer’s inventory.
This makes the Enzo worth saving despite the ultra-expensive repair bill that will come with it – which
will make the insurance company anything but happy

Police in the Netherlands arrested a 58-year-old man suspected of breaking into two museums last year in which paintings from Vincent van Gogh and Frans Hals
valued at a combined total of 21-million euros
The man was taken into custody at his home in Baarn
He was then caught on camera walking out with the six-million euro painting in one hand
The painting was loaned to the Singer Laren by the Groninger Museum
"the painting 'Twee lachende jongens' by painter Frans Hals was stolen from the Hofje van mevrouw Aerden in Leerdam," police said
it was the third time that the painting was stolen
Police believe the suspect they arrested on Tuesday carried out both burglaries
His home in Baarn is just ten minutes by car from the Singer Laren

The police supported two new searches for missing Anne Faber from Utrecht in Baarn on Monday afternoon. The searches focused on the areas around Soestdijk Palace and around Hilversumsestraatweg, NU.nl reports.
Friends and family members of Faber gathered to search for the 25-year-old woman, who disappeared while cycling in stormy weather around 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The police traced a selfie she sent to her boyfriend shortly before she disappeared to Baarn.
On Twitter the Utrecht police announced that several items were found during the search. The police are investigating where these items came from. According to newspaper AD, one of the items found was a bicycle wheel.
A police team also searched Baarn on Sunday, using a police helicopter with thermal imaging equipment, but no trace of the young woman was found.

Margriet Francisca was born on 19 January 1943 in the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, during the Second World War to then Princess Juliana (future Queen Juliana) and Prince Bernhard. Her family had fled the Netherlands after the Nazi invasion and had resided in Canada since June 1940.
The maternity ward where she was born was temporarily declared, by the Canadian government, extraterritorial. This technically made the ward international and ensured that the young Princess would have Dutch citizenship only.
Her first name was based on the Marguerite flower (oxeye daisy), which was a symbol of the Nazi resistance.
Margriet has two older sisters, Beatrix and Irene and one younger sister, Christina (1947-2019). Of course, Beatrix would go on to be Queen Beatrix until her 2013 abdication in favour of her eldest son, Willem-Alexander.
She was christened in Ottawa at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on 29 June 1943. Her godparents were United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt; Crown Princess Märtha of Norway; Governor-General of Canada, Alexander, 1st Earl of Athlone; Queen Mary of the United Kingdom; Princess Juliana’s lady-in-waiting, Martine Roell; and the Dutch Merchant Fleet.
Princess Margriet was two-years-old when they returned to the Netherlands after it had been liberated in August 1945. She lived with her family in Soestdijk Palace in the town of Baarn. For her education, she attended De Werkplaats school and Nieuwe Baarnse School in Bilthoven and Baarn, respectively. She completed her secondary education at Baarns Lyceum; she graduated in 1961 after passing her exams.
She spent a year at the University of Montpellier in France, focusing on French literature, history and art history. Afterwards, she attended Leiden University, studying “elementary jurisprudence, constitutional law, Roman law and some social science subjects,” according to the Royal House of the Netherlands. It was there that she met her future husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven.
The couple announced their engagement on 10 March 1965 and married on 10 January 1967 in a civil ceremony followed by a religious ceremony at St James Church. The couple moved into the east wing of Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn. In 1975, their home Het Loo House was completed, and they moved in.
Margriet and Pieter have four sons: Prince Maurits (b. 17 April 1968), Prince Bernhard (b. 25 December 1969), Prince Pieter-Christiaan (b. 22 March 1972) and Prince Floris (b. 10 April 1975). Their children, as was decided when they wed, were only Princes of Orange-Nassau with the style of Highness. Margriet and Pieter have 11 grandchildren.
In the Netherlands, she holds the honours of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Grand Cross of the Order of the House of Orange, 1966 Royal Wedding Medal, Queen Beatrix Investiture Medal, 2002 Royal Wedding Medal, and King Willem-Alexander Investiture Medal.
Princess Margriet also holds honours from the following foreign countries: Belgium, Cameroon, Chile, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Luxembourg, Norway, Mexico, Portugal, Romania, Senegal, Spain, Suriname, Sweden, and Venezuela.
I work at St Andrew’s Church Ottawa Canada: we are very proud and honoured to have our Dutch connection! We have a lectern given to us by the Dutch Royal family when they left Canada; visit us and we will tell you the whole story of the family’s time in Canada….

which was sold by the state to a private developer five years ago
The approval means work can now go ahead on building houses and a hotel on the property
the former home of queen Juliana and prince Bernhard
In total, 120 companies drew up proposals to develop the estate and the current owner won the beauty contest and auction with a bid of €1.7m in 2017
it will be partly turned into a ‘meeting place’ with exhibitions

On Tuesday night television program Opsporing Verzocht paid attention to the disappearance of 25-year-old Anne Faber from Utrecht
the police received dozens of tips about the young woman
a witness noticed a jacket in Huis ter Heide and called the police
The police believe the jacket belongs to Faber
A search was launched in Huis ter Heide around 5:00 p.m
A spokesperson for the police told the newspaper that a crime scene was established where the clothing was found
That means that forensic investigators examined trace evidence that could be related to a crime
The police also investigated Faber's phone traffic
in an effort to get more clarity about what happened to her
"It gives an ever better picture of where to look for Anne"
"From the data it seems that Anne cycled on the bike route 115802 from Soest to De Bilt
This was on Friday September 29th between 19:00 and 20:30
The last signal we received from her phone was just before 19:30
The police are very concerned about the missing woman
There are no indications that she wanted to disappear for a while
Discussions with friends and family members sketch the image that Anne is someone with a strong sense of responsibility
according to a file the police partially put online
After struggling in relative obscurity and poverty for decades
Escher gained a huge following starting in the 1950s for his eerie
unsettling images of staircases that seem to rise and descend at the same time
or of interlocking patterns of goggle-eyed birds
fish or reptiles that seem to recede to infinity on surfaces that are manifestly flat
The problem with Escher is that he’s been loved to death
His work has been reproduced so often in books and on posters
coffee mugs and trinkets that it’s easy to think that if you know Escher in reproduction
That's not the case at all, as it never is with any artist. An illuminating new exhibition on Escher's work at the Akron Art Museum illustrates the truism that seeing an artwork in a book or on a poster is never
the same as seeing the original in the flesh
Akron Art Museum: The exhibition "M.C
The show, on loan from the Herakleidon Museum in Athens
which holds one of the world's largest collections of Escher's work
They include the strangely beautiful double portrait of Escher and his wife
in which their faces are described by intertwined Mobius bands
Also on view is a woozy lithograph depicting a print gallery in which the image contemplated by a visitor on the left side of the image leaps out of its frame to become the foreground on the right side of the very same image
The show illuminates the perfectionism of Escher’s work by exploring his development from gawky art student to polished professional
Early prints and drawings from the 1920s display the young Escher’s fascination with linear perspective
a technique he didn’t completely master until a decade later
the show also includes pencil sketches in which the mature Escher explores with mathematical precision interlocking patterns of crawling lizards or a strange
infinitely receding three-dimensional grid of grinning flying fish
who seem to fly through space in the finished print like an airborne armada of torpedoes with fins
On the printed page of an art book or magazine
mechanical coldness that exaggerates certain tendencies in his work
principally his overpowering search for visual order and his desire for an almost ruthless sense of control
more luminous and more engaging than in mechanical copies
His prints have a suppleness and presence that fails utterly to come across in reproduction
a quality that vanishes in photomechanical copies
By restoring humanity and a sense of touch to Escher’s work
the Akron exhibit makes the artist’s struggle for mathematical precision more understandable
And while the show makes it easier to perceive Escher as an artistic throwback to the Old Masterly traditions of graphic art before the rise of modernism
it also connects him to the 20th-century avant-garde
because most art historians and critics don’t consider Escher a member of the vanguard
Important texts on modernism, such as H.H. Arnason's "History of Modern Art" or H.W. Janson's "History of Art," don't even mention Escher
the Oxford Dictionary of 20th Century Art points out that Escher’s work is often associated with the psychedelia of the 1960s and the tastes of “young people” who felt that his work “complemented the ‘mind-expanding’ experiences gained through hallucinogenic drugs.”
the show makes a visual case for considering Escher’s rigorous pursuit of visual and conceptual logic as part of the modernist impulse to turn art into a form of research in a forward-moving version of aesthetic progress
connected to Paul Cezanne’s apples or Georges Seurat’s pointillist dots
Escher wanted to push linear perspective to the breaking point and beyond
while the French artists explored the optical properties of color
Escher’s work also derives much of its force from his media
He coaxed enormous precision and subtlety from lithographs
drawn in greasy black crayon on heavy blocks of stone
made by gouging lines and forms on flat pieces of wood
the medium in Escher’s work becomes part of the message
laced-up probity that makes it seem oddly uptight
conservative and set apart from the artistic revolutions of the 20th century
a 1935 lithographic portrait of the artist’s father
which dwells minutely on the elder Escher’s moustache
has a stillness and an acuteness of observation that links it to precedents in northern European art such as Albrecht Durer’s famous drawings of a hare or a beetle
The show indicates that Escher bears comparison to Surrealists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte
had roots in traditional and conservative academic techniques
But the strangeness that permeates Escher’s work seems to spring from different sources than the erotic and psychological anxieties that permeate Dali and Magritte
is pervaded by an almost unsettling coolness
Moved by a decadelong sojourn in Italy early in his career
Escher often drew on memories of the terraced hillsides and crowded
fortified villages of the Amalfi coast or the Baroque churches of Rome
But while other artists throughout the centuries have reveled in the warm light of Italy
Escher turned down the thermostat and replaced the warm haze of the Mediterranean with a cool light reminiscent of northern Renaissance masters such as Jan van Eyck
The effect contributes to the fundamental strangeness at the core of Escher’s work
but it may have been a byproduct of his search for precision
not any desire to impart a surreal quality to his scenery or to impart a mood of anxiety
Such distinctions are subtle but important
and they can only be understood by seeing the prints in person
The same could be said of Escher’s strangely homogeneous approach to the surface texture of the forms he assayed
In his depictions of Italian Renaissance and medieval architecture
the solid objects in his scenes seem to be molded out of plastic
and it’s clearly part of Escher’s desire to control one artistic variable so as to give his full attention to another -- his quest for a precise way to depict illusions that would be impossible in the real world
Escher comes across in the show as a heroic individual struggling for transcendence while remaining painfully aware of his limits
cited in wall labels and a 1986 book entitled “Escher on Escher,” available on a study table in the exhibition
are haunted by a sense of struggle and failure
Yet Escher was determined to gaze into the infinite
In an astoundingly precise and rich mezzotint depicting his right eye
the artist’s retina reflects a human skull
The image is both a memento mori and portrayal of the artist as a kind of hero
By presenting Escher’s work in its complexity
the Akron show has done the artist a posthumous service
It has helped to rescue him from his own success

Dutch police arrested a 58-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of stealing two paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Frans Hals from small museums
saying it brought them closer to recovering both masterworks
The man was held at his home in the central town of Baarn over last year's thefts of Van Gogh's 1884 work Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring
and 17th-century painter Hals's Two Laughing Boys
Police said that they have not yet found either of the paintings – the Van Gogh is valued at up to six million euros – but the arrest was an "important step" in the investigation
intensive investigations into the robbery of both paintings were conducted under the leadership of the public prosecution service," a Dutch police statement said
"This has led to the arrest of a 58-year-old suspect from Baarn
The man is suspected of stealing the paintings."
The Van Gogh painting was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum near Amsterdam just over one year ago on March 30
while it was closed due to coronavirus measures
It is around 10 kilometres from Baarn where the suspect was arrested.
The Two Laughing Boys by Hals was meanwhile taken in August from the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden museum in Leerdam
dubbed the "Indiana Jones of the Art World" for finding a number of lost paintings
"Another huge success for Dutch Police," Brand tweeted
It was Brand who two months after the theft of the Van Gogh received two "proof of life" photos of the painting
The Singer Laren Museum said it hoped the arrest would lead to the recovery of the "beautiful work"
which it had on loan from the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands
Detail of Van Gogh’s ‘Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring’
"Compliments to the police for their investigative work
Nobody is allowed to break in with impunity," general manager Evert van Os said in a statement
"I sincerely hope that this arrest will lead the police to the painting in the short term..
It has now been a year since the break-in took place and every day we hope for this good news."
The Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden said on its Facebook that there was now a "little bit of hope" about getting the Hals painting back
The police statement said that "both paintings have not yet resurfaced with this arrest
"This arrest is an important step in the investigation
If you have information and have not yet shared it with the police please do this," it added
Parsonage Garden comes from early in Van Gogh's career
before the prolific artist embarked on his trademark post-impressionist paintings such as Sunflowers and his vivid self-portraits
The theft happened on what would have been his 167th birthday
featuring two laughing boys with a mug of beer
had for its part previously been stolen twice before from the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden museum in 2011 and 1988
It was recovered after six months and three years respectively
a contemporary of fellow masters Rembrandt and Vermeer
is best known for works including The Laughing Cavalier
which hangs in the Wallace Collection in London
Van Gogh's works have been a frequent target of crime
Van Gogh’s 'View of the Sea at Scheveningen' (1882),recovered from a mafia drug baron’s home near Naples in 2016
Two Van Gogh masterpieces went back on display at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum two years ago after they were stolen from there in 2002.
The paintings – the 1882 View of the Sea at Scheveningen and the 1884/5 Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church at Nuenen – were recovered from a home belonging to a mafia drug baron near Naples in 2016.
three Van Goghs that were stolen from the Noordbrabants Museum in 1990 later resurfaced when a notorious Dutch criminal made a deal with prosecutors.

If you are a fan of cars
Pictured below is a rare £2.5 million Ferrari Enzo which tragically crashed into a tree on Tuesday (18 January)
The accident occurred in the town of Baarn
Local reports suggest the unlucky guy behind the crash was a dealership mechanic
who we suspect will probably never live this one done
but was taken to the hospital for a check-up
An eyewitness to the aftermath said: “The local Ferrari dealer is about two kilometres away from the scene
“The Weather conditions were damp and chilly
“It hit a tree stump at the side of the road
It hit it on the passenger side and the stump was damaged
but I think he wanted to turn right back to the dealership.”
Car lovers will be mourning the loss of this one for a long time
as just 400 Enzos left the Ferrari production line between 2002 and 2004
A 2003 Ferrari Enzo was sold in August 2021 by RM Sotheby's for an eye-watering $3,360,000 (£2,463,132)
Earlier this month, Richard Hammond was brave enough to get back behind the wheel of the car that nearly killed him 16 years ago
Hammond was injured in a Vampire dragster while filming a segment for Top Gear back in September 2006
He had been travelling in the jet-powered car
at Elvington Airfield near York when one of the front tyres failed
The frightening incident resulted in Hammond suffering a significant brain injury and being in a coma for two weeks
the beloved presenter made a full recovery
Now he’s been reunited with the model for DriveTribe
the digital community set up by Hammond and his former Top Gear colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and James May
The site shared a YouTube video of the event
saying in the description: “Richard Hammond has been entertaining us on our screens for over 20 years now
but one car nearly changed things forever – the Vampire jet car
Hammond sets out DriveTribe's plans for 2022
before attempting to get comfortable again with the 300mph+ land speed car.”

What does a 20th-century Dutch graphic artist have in common with a contemporary Japanese design studio
which will be explored in the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) summer exhibition Escher X nendo | Between Two Worlds
You are probably familiar with Escher’s mindboggling ‘impossible constructions’ – staircases that don’t lead anywhere
buildings that defy gravity and physics – and his metamorphosing shapes and patterns
Escher (1898–1972) was known for his mathematically inspired prints
Between Two Worlds will feature more than 150 prints and drawings by Escher
loaned from the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague
which houses the world’s largest collection of Escher’s work
The works will be presented within an immersive exhibition environment
especially created by acclaimed Japanese design studio
Escher was interested in the paradox of presenting three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane
The pairing of Escher and studio nendo was conceptualised as a way for the NGV to present Escher’s imaginary world within a three-dimensional reality
Using the universally recognised motif of a house (which will appear in various forms) as the basis for their exhibition design
nendo have drawn from Escher’s playful work process to create their installation
says that the exhibition design is intended to allow visitors “to experience Escher’s world in a very physical way
It’s as if they are walking inside Escher’s mind
but seeing the exhibition through their own eyes.”
The exhibition will open at 8am during the final week
and there will be special late night programming on 4-7 April
