Student goalkeeper shines in KNVB Cup as amateur Barendrecht stun NAC BredaGet Belgian and Dutch Football NewsOctober 31, 2024 at 3:33 PM UTC·1 min readFurther drama in the KNVB Beker’s First Round this week saw Tweede Divisie side BVV Barendrecht beat NAC Breda 2-1
Wouter Vermeer opened the scoring for the amateur hosts eight minutes in
before Lars Mol restored parity in the second half
the 50th-minute goal was a mere false hope
as the brave hosts notched a last-minute winner with Brent Vogts
While the party lasted until late into the night for the rest of the squad
Gomes admittedly had to watch his step a little
that night under the lights against Breda saw Gomes pass a test
albeit one that won’t earn him school credits

More attention to AI and another plea for hybrid education
According to Party Front party leader Storm Barendrecht
these are the most important points of contention in the run-up to the elections for the University Council
Because ‘study time is not only meant for studying.’
‘The developments in the field of AI are happening very quickly
and it is striking that the university paints a negative picture of these new applications
Many teachers are afraid that students are using AI for some form of plagiarism
Front wants more attention to be paid to the use of AI applications in education
‘Because there are also positive sides to the use of AI
We would like to explore the possibilities of such applications in the coming year
And we want the provision of information about AI to be broadened
so that students are better informed about what is allowed and what is not allowed
We would like students to be able to choose for themselves whether they follow a lecture physically or watch a recording of that lecture at a time of their choice
It is almost election time on campus again
students choose who represents them in the participation councils of Tilburg University
In the run-up to the election week, Univers publishes interviews with the party leaders of the participation parties
‘Hybrid learning has a number of advantages
students can watch the lecture and use it as a reference book
it is not always possible to be physically present on campus
because they are attending training courses or meetings
We believe that study time is not only intended for study
extra-curricular activities are also of paramount importance to us
Front wants to explore the possibilities that exist outside the current range of study places in the university library and in other buildings
We are looking at whether we can offer a digital platform so that students can get a better insight into the current occupancy rate
That way it remains attractive to come to campus to study there.’
‘Social safety is an important theme these days
Front has ensured that confidential counsellors are trained at student associations
Each association now has two confidential advisors
so that the threshold for students to tell their story if they have a problem is lowered
Another example that responds to this are the so-called ‘safe spaces’ during carnival
in collaboration with the municipality of Tilburg
extracurricular activities in addition to their studies are very important
That is why Front has committed itself to recognition in the form of a certificate for student board members
You receive this certificate at the end of your board year
so that it also has a recognized value.’
‘We think it is important that students orientate themselves broadly
This can be done by becoming a member of an association
Because that way you learn other social skills and make new contacts
you increase your chances of getting a job after your studies
a vote for Front is a vote for a party that is committed to the recognition of extracurricular activities.’
and I am currently in the second year of my bachelor’s degree in public administration
I was already active in Study Association Juribes
This year I became a member of the rowing club Vidar
and I am a member of the women’s fraternity Luna
I did a committee year at the Top Week last year
I can recommend it to everyone to get active
‘Now I am looking for a professional challenge
This position as party leader for Front fits in very well with my studies in public administration
I would like to get enough votes and get a seat
so that I can also participate in the discussion next year and represent the active student in a university council.’

The other 13 children in this case are victims of other crimes
“Think mainly of making recordings of them,” the public prosecutor said in the court in Rotterdam
The case involves 31 victims, girls aged 9 to 12. The abuse allegedly happened in Van B.’s home in Barendrecht and the campsite in Hoeven (Noord-Brabant) that he frequented. In November, the authorities already said that there were around 30 victims
These are different images than the ones he allegedly produced himself
The suspect did not attend the second preliminary hearing on Monday
The families of the involved children followed the hearing via a video link from another courtroom
is scheduled to be admitted ot the Pieter Bann Center at the end of May for a psychiatric and psychological examination
The case will continue on May 20 with another preliminary hearing
It is not yet known when the case will come to trial
“There is still a lot of work to be done,” the presiding judge said

WiredScore was started through a partnership with the City of New York and real estate owners in 2013 as part of an initiative to expand the city’s wireless connectivity
thousands of buildings around the globe have earned WiredScore certifications for how well their buildings are able to provide internet
The company has since expanded to include a smart building certification called SmartScore
the certification company is in 40 countries around the world and is looking to continue its expansion and adoption
spoke to Propmodo about how digital connectivity has evolved over the last decade
the firm’s latest product that focuses on building portfolios
and what he would be doing if he wasn’t leading WiredScore
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity
Thanks! A new tab should have opened. Click here if not.
the year is going well both personally and professionally
I’ve been able to do a bit of travel this year on the personal side
and WiredScore has been off to a really strong start
I think our team feels like it’s firing on all cylinders
it feels like there are signs that the macro market has an uptick of energy
which is also good news for everyone in the space
It’s been just over ten years since you launched WiredScore
and how do you feel about what you’ve accomplished in that time
but it also passed by in a blink of an eye
It’s fun to hit milestones like a ten-year anniversary
you’re not doing a ton of that; you’re looking ahead 99 percent of the time
We now have over 4,000 buildings around the world that we have certified through our two products
We also work with over 1,000 companies and have over 1,500 WiredScore accredited professionals who are folks that we partner with to help sell and deliver our certifications
I’m really proud of where we’ve come from and what we’ve accomplished
The metric we use internally that gets us the most excited is distilling down our certified building footprint into people we’ve impacted
Humans working or living in the buildings that we have certified through WiredScore and SmartScore
we used a formula to do that in terms of density
but we estimate that over 8 million people work or live in WiredScore buildings
and that is our North Star because we get really excited about our opportunity to impact the built environment and make buildings better
If we’ve helped 8 million people be in better buildings
then that’s something to be especially proud of
you partnered with then Mayor Bloomberg and New York City’s Economic Development Corporation
What was it like partnering with the city and working with Mayor Bloomberg
Mayor Bloomberg had a great reputation obviously
but especially with the real estate community in New York
The partnership brought immediate credibility to WiredScore
which is really important because landlords are risk averse
They want to work with partners with staying power
It’s especially true of a standards company
It also created a bit of a shared mission between WiredScore and the city and landlords and everyone involved
the shared mission being that we’re all working together to make New York City an attractive place to sign a lease and to locate your company
Having more transparency about the best-connected buildings was a good way to attract and retain innovative companies in the city
That was a big part of Bloomberg’s mission
to try to create a rival to Silicon Valley
and I think he did a really good job of that
And I’d like to think our partnership in New York
being the first city in the world to have a rating system for connectivity
was a small but important part of his overarching initiative to make NYC a global tech hub.How did that partnership come about
We partnered with the Economic Development Corporation [EDC] and shared the idea of this rating system
The partnership was formalized through a proposal process
and we responded to an RFP to be the partner in creating and rolling out the initiative
One of the things the EDC did after we became formal partners
much better than I would have been able to do on my own
We had representatives from the Department of Buildings and Department of Information Technology
I had Rudin Management on my initial advisory committee as I was creating the early version of WiredScore
to a bunch of smart brains to help create the best platform possible
What’s the latest product your company has been working on
The thing we’re spending a lot of time on is something we launched last year
Which is a version of our certification that we partner with landlords on when 70 percent of their portfolios are certified or more than 70 percent
We arm landlords with special tools and a platform for tracking the state of connectivity and smart technology across all of their assets
as well as benchmark data on what the rest of the data has from a technology capabilities perspective
What’s interesting about WiredScore portfolio is that it’s reflective of a big trend in building tech
which is it’s increasingly moving from asset by asset strategies to a centralized technology strategy for large building portfolios
We’re seeing the creation of smart buildings teams within real estate organizations
and a real centralization of responsibility to have technology plans for the next 5 or 10 years to modernize assets
And WiredScore Portfolio is our way to sort of shepherd that centralization and make sure we’re being helpful to companies that are taking that approach
It’s striking how a lot of buildings have outdated infrastructure that can be very costly to update and how many owners were not aware of the need to update
Do you think that level of awareness has changed over the last several years
a questionnaire that landlords could take on our website to sort of run a self-assessment of your building’s connectivity without us having gone inside the building to inspect and validate
They literally couldn’t fill out the questionnaire because they didn’t understand which service providers were in their buildings with which type of service and so on
I do think awareness has shifted over the last decade
I think the reason for that is an acceptance of responsibility from the perspective of the landlord
most landlords believed that digital infrastructure was a tenant’s responsibility
The landlord would provide the box and hand the keys over
Which was a high friction sort of attitude because a lot of that equipment
a lot of the stuff that powers connectivity in our offices
So there was a lot of sort of butting of heads when it came to that mindset
Although there are still a lot of question marks
now with the advent of smart building technology and connected building systems
there’s still this friction between users of buildings and owners of buildings as to responsibility for who should be deploying the technology
Who gets the data that connected systems produce
But landlords definitely accept more responsibility today
Because without landlords putting in those technology foundations
there’s really nothing tenants can do in their spaces meaningfully to deliver great connectivity and smart technology to their employees
has the bar started to get raised for connectivity in buildings
and will you have to move the goalposts or add more certifications over time to reflect that upward shift
and it gets raised for two reasons: advancement in technology and evolution of tenant expectations
we didn’t have mobile signal strength in our scorecards
and the expectation that your cell phone should work anywhere in the building
there’s way more pressure in 2024 than in 2013 to support mobile signals throughout the building
So we evolve our scorecards every two years
and we think that’s a really important function for us to play because in moving that goalpost
it’s our way to tell the industry what’s next
The other thing we’ve done is we’ve created a second certification which I mentioned earlier called SmartScore
SmartScore focuses on the full breadth of building systems that impact operating efficiency and tenant experience
we toss the term smart buildings around quite a bit
but the industry is very far from meeting our definition of what a smart building is
what’s the competitive landscape like right now
We are proudly the only digital connectivity certification in the world
There are a few other smart building certifications out there
but we are about 20 times larger in footprint than our next closest competitor as a smart building certification
I think it’s important to think about how there’s a lot of value in having a single
Because when there are multiple standards for the same thing
there’s a lot of confusion between the ecosystem—landlords and tenants and brokers and architects and engineers—and we view it as our responsibility to be the global leading standard to ensure that the industry has a clear line of sight into a single way of measuring things
Most proptech companies don’t go to 40 countries around the world because it’s really hard
But when Hines develops a building we want them to be able to follow WiredScore and SmartScore standards
whether that’s in New York or Mumbai or Hong Kong
and that makes things a lot easier on landlords and developers
Do you want to continue growing geographically in the future
We aspire to be fully global and eventually be in every country in the world
but we won’t be hiring WiredScore teammates on the ground in every country
What supports our international expansion is this network of WiredScore accredited professionals
people that we partner with to help deliver services
The other thing we aspire to do is expand across asset classes
we work with office buildings and multifamily buildings
there should be a WiredScore or SmartScore available for hotels
I get calls and texts that airplanes need WiredScores
and coffee shops need WiredScores—we’re not quite there yet
Have you traveled to all the countries you’ve expanded into
but my wife and dog would prefer that I am not on the road that much
Do you still feel the same way about the city as you did when you first moved here
I do have that sort of cliche feeling every time I’m driving across a bridge from LaGuardia or JFK back into the city
where you sort of look into the skyline and feel like there’s no better place to be
But I am a Southern Californian by childhood
and I’d be lying if I didn’t say I look at the weather app on my phone at Manhattan Beach probably every other day
and think what life might be like on that side of the country as well
or are you sticking to your Southern Californian teams
but this year has had frustrating ups and downs
that means often my basketball viewing starts at 10 pm Eastern
I might get sucked into the third or fourth quarter
which is not always the best for my sleep schedule
What do you think you would be if you hadn’t created WiredScore
It’s funny; it’s a good transition from your last question
I think the job I envy the most and would love to do someday still is to be a basketball coach
I spend a lot of time doing it from the couch
defensive strategies that the Lakers should be rolling out
as I look back to the most influential people in my life
many of those people have been coaches and
Basketball teams are pretty small compared to other sports
and your coach has sort of an outsized influence on who you are as a human being in critical times in your life
I feel like being able to have that impact in the future and stick close to a sport that I love is pretty cool
Have you thought about doing an intramural league with WiredScore
I do play in what they call an old man league at the moment with some of my friends
We have rented a basketball gym for WiredScore before
Some pretty good talent on the WiredScore team

He allegedly abused them while they were visiting with his own children
either at his home in Barendrecht or at a campsite in Noord-Brabant that the family frequented
the judge briefly acknowledged that some of the victims’ parents were in the courtroom
who sometimes do not even know that they are involved in a crime
The man himself spoke at the end of the hearing
“I have hidden the worst part of me for years
I hope that is the best I can do for the victims and their loved ones.”
The case came to light in September when two girls having a sleepover with the man’s children woke up unexpectedly while he was sexually abusing them. The girls told their parents, who went to the police. The Barendrecht man turned himself in a short time later and, to the police’s surprise, immediately started confessing one crime after another
The man confessed to sexually abusing 19 children
But further investigation revealed more victims
The man will be admitted to the Pieter Baan Center for psychological and psychiatric evaluation as soon as possible
AGF-Online has been growing various products from German soil
innovating remains a must," says Angèlique van der Meij
"When my father started Van der Mey-Barendrecht
we made a tentative start in 2001 with two pallets of spring onions
they proudly arrived in Barendrecht at 03.00 at night
cars unload all day long because the space in Barendrecht is too limited for these quantities
We also have several departure times scheduled in Germany
so customers can order until late morning or early afternoon
Those who order earlier can load earlier the other day
the vacuum coolers can keep up more easily."
we are developing a plant protection product against mildew organically
Mildew didn't always go completely well in the past much too humid spring
"We have also been feeding German carrots for years
The carrots in De Pfalz have a fantastic flavour due to the greasy clay soil
Smooth drainage and controlled groundwater levels are therefore of enormous importance
which are slightly lighter than the 12'ers and therefore a bit easier to flowpack
the cask and transport costs are obviously lower
"Celery and radishes can of course be packed in all kinds of ways
The marketing of German parsley is also improving
but gently there is a growing realisation that they are tougher and tastier," Angèlique continues
we are carefully driving up the first pumpkins
Next week we will also be very ample in kohlrabi
And as the Maths teacher always concluded at Mavo: Don't ask how it can be done

Sex crime suspect Mels van B. (45) from Barendrecht may also have drugged the children that he abused. The investigation team who is investigating the large sex crime case is currently investigating these clues, De Telegraaf reported based on information from sources
more and more parents are reporting to the police
Van B. has said that he abused 19 children
Some were five or six years old when the severe abuse took place
Most of them were friends of the man’s own children
Many of the children were members of the same water polo club
This also happened at the primary school that one of the suspect’s children attended
The suspect was caught after two children woke up while he was taking advantage of them. The two told their parents, who then went to the police to press charges. Van B. turned himself in to the police on September 10
A Large-Scale Investigation Team of 20 detectives
The Telegraaf understands that even the most experienced investigators have been shocked by the case
“We think that the 19 are just the tip of the iceberg
More and more parents are reporting to the police because they now know that their child also slept at the suspect’s house
The suspect has been confronted with these claims,” said a source to the Telegraaf
An investigation into allegations of extensive sexual abuse of children at the hands of a single man in Barendrecht is currently focused on 19 minor-aged victims
The suspect has acknowledged the abuse of these victims
and has been questioned about "indecent acts" involving each of the children
the Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirmed in an update issued on Tuesday
Investigators do not believe the abuse involves more victims
The child victims are "mainly at the end of primary school age," with students in the Netherlands often leaving primary school around 11 or 12 years of age
News of the abuse first surfaced a few days after the 45-year-old suspect was arrested on September 10
but few details were released in the days that followed
The suspect was identified by the Telegraaf as Mels van B
The newspaper's sources said that many of the victims were houseguests who participated in activities with his children
He emerged as a suspect after a victim pressed charges against him
and he later turned himself in at a police station
Authorities searched the man's home in the Zuid-Holland town south of Rotterdam
but they also carried out searches at a campsite in Hoeven
The OM confirmed in its update that the man "regularly stayed" at this location
Evidence seized included mobile phones and data storage devices
The OM did not state the nature or frequency of the abuse
It also did not reveal biographical details about the victims
The OM and the police did not want to go public with more details immediately after the arrest
because they needed an opportunity to discuss the situation with the victims' parents
police launched a wide-scale investigation to determine what crimes took place
Aside from the searches of his home and the campsite
the police also interrogated the man at several different times
"There are currently no indications that there are more victims," the OM stated
and neighbors living near the Barendrecht residence have either refused to comment or have had little to say
Everyone will see that," said Barendrecht Mayor Ronald Schneider
"I can well imagine that people who hear or read about this think
"We can well understand the concern of and impact on local residents," the OM said on Tuesday
"A sex crimes case is drastic and impactful for the victims and their loved ones
the police and the Public Prosecution Service can conduct the investigation
he was remanded into custody late last week by an examining magistrate
A court hearing on September 26 will determine if his pre-trial detention can be extended by up to 90 days
A 45-year-old man from Barendrecht is in custody for sexually assaulting multiple children. The man turned himself in after a report was filed against him, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said
the examining magistrate remanded him into custody for another 14 days
“The investigation is currently in full swing,” the OM said
Sources told the Telegraaf that the man sexually abused children of varying ages
including “very young children,” at his home and other locations
The man allegedly knew the children from clubs and through acquaintances
The sources called it a very serious and extensive sexual offense
Sex crimes have a massive impact on the victims and their loved ones
no further statements will be made about this case.” The prosecutor added that it understands that local residents will have questions and concerns
The electricity grid in Rotterdam and the surrounding area has reached its maximum capacity
Large consumers who apply for a new connection or want to expand their existing one will now end up on a waiting list
The affected area includes a large part of Rotterdam-Zuid
Parts of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpernerwaard are also affected
Stedin is investigating whether it can reward some large consumers for using electricity at non-peak times
Large consumers who would like to participate can register with the grid operator
Stedin also appealed to households and small businesses to avoid peak hours on the electricity grid - between 4:00 p.m
“By using charging stations and heat pumps mainly outside these peak hours
residents and businesses help relieve the electricity grid,” regional director Maarten Bijl said
Stedin is working with TenneT on expanding and strengthening the grid around Rotterdam and expects it to have space again from 2029
The power grid throughout the Netherlands is under pressure
Demand for electricity keeps rising as the country transitions away from natural gas for cooking and heating and fossil fuel vehicles
Zuid-Holland is the only province in the Netherlands that still has some space on the electricity grid
All other provinces are colored red or orange
“Zuid-Holland still has some white spots because heavier grids were installed here due to the many industries,” a spokesperson for Stedin explained to NU.nl
the electricity grid is reaching the limits of its capacity and therefore expansion is necessary
On April 19, Simwave officially opened its 5,000-square-meter (16,404-square-foot) maritime training center in Barendrecht
The 300 guests took a behind the scenes look at the new location
The ‘site acceptance test’ was completed on January 29 in collaboration with the supplier of the simulators
the center has been operational with many training courses being organized for customers such as Genting Hong Kong
Simwave courses can be run on one of the 59 simulators or they can be linked to provide multi-vessel simulations
The ‘full mission’ simulators have a replica of an entire bridge of a ship almost at full scale
The machine room replica comprises seven simulators
which occupy two floors of the new building
Netherlands-based Simwave operates maritime simulation training centers worldwide that are one-stop shops for certified maritime training

I was stunned to receive a call from a friend this afternoon telling me that Wouter Barendrecht
co-chairman of the top arthouse international sales and production company Fortissimo Films
Wouter has been a bedrock of international art film distribution as long as I have been in the film business
championing of auteurs new and established
uncanny networking ability and indefatigable good cheer at the festivals he seemed to effortlessly navigate were all things anyone who worked in world cinema strived to emulate
for both the international film business but
many friends Wouter had all over the world
Here is the statement issued by his colleagues at Fortissimo Films.
Fortissimo Films is deeply saddened to confirm that company founder and co-chairman Wouter Barendrecht died on Sunday
Thailand where he had gone to screen a rough cut of Fortissimo’s upcoming Thai co-production NYMPH
Barendrecht was a passionate advocate of independent cinema for his entire career
the last 19 years of which were at Fortissimo Films and previously at the International Film Festival Rotterdam
where he helped create the Cinemart co-production forum
is an inestimable loss: to his beloved family and co-workers
where his enthusiasm and drive helped create enduring testaments to his memory
Barendrecht’s vision helped a generation of film-makers reach a global audience
particularly in Asia where he moved to Hong Kong in 1997 upon the advice of acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai to set up the Fortissimo office along with subsequent business partner and co-chairman Michael J Werner
led to repeated collaborations with directors such as Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul and his decision to establish a second home in Bangkok
Barendrecht’s passing has shocked and saddened all his colleagues
His death comes shortly after a busy Filmart in Hong Kong for the company
and preparing for Fortissimo’s upcoming Cannes slate
“We are all too shocked for words by Wouter’s untimely death
and one of the closest friends anyone could ever have
We at Fortissimo are all devastated by this news and we intend to celebrate Wouter’s life and work by proudly carrying on his vision of the company and the business
Everything is too early but we are in the planning stages of one or more memorial services
“Wouter’s artistic collaborations were as numerous and far-flung as his friendships
His enthusiasm for life and art was infectious; he was a loyal friend and colleague
DDA PR Chairman Dennis Davidson added “Wouter was a one of a kind cineaste who brought a unique sensibility to the international marketing of films.”
President of Shangri-La Entertainment commented “We mourn the passing of one of the most respected sales agents we have been privileged to work with.”
Eugene Hernandez at Indiewire first posted news of the Wouter’s passing, and his story has a comments thread in which a number of his friends are posting their thoughts
and we will post news of them as well as other memories of Wouter in the days ahead
Paccar Parts Europe has installed a power supply system at Best Trucks
a DAF Electric Truck Centre in Barendrecht
power storage and three fast-charging connections
This microgrid consists of 750 roof-mounted solar panels
battery storage with a capacity of 480 kWh
an energy management system and three fast charging connections with a maximum output of 360 kW
Two charging stations were installed in the workshop
which can charge lorries with electric drives within an hour
The third fast charging station is also accessible to the public
“Due to the increasing demand for energy
securing the energy supply is under pressure
You don’t want to choose between keeping the lights on in the workshop or supercharging your customers’ electric vehicles,” explained Ronald Janssen
“This microgrid ensures a consistent and sustainable energy supply while also facilitating rapid charging
It remains operational even in unfavourable weather conditions or during periods of insufficient grid electricity
It is good to know we always can rely on the energy storage.”
The two companies can trace their charging cooperation back to 2021, when DAF Trucks had announced a complete range of charging stations with outputs from 20 kW to 350 kW from Paccar’s portfolio. In 2022, a charging partnership was announced with Heliox
DAF is based in the Netherlands, where it also manufactures electric trucks

Dutch importer Hillfresh International will open its new distribution centre in Barendrecht
marking the start of what is expected to be another year of strong growth for the company
the company has been based in Rotterdam but
according to managing director Hans van den Heuvel
the time has come to move to a larger facility
“Barendrecht is the fruit and vegetable centre of the Netherlands and therefore an ideal location for Hillfresh International,” he told Fruitnet.com
it has been Hillfresh’s wish to set up its business in Barendrecht
Founded in September 2007 by Leo van den Heuvel and Pieter de Jong
the firm now employs 63 staff and has focused its business on vegetables such as peppers and tomatoes
After what he described as a 'turbulent' first year followed by impressive growth in the second year
Mr Van den Heuvel said the company had outgrown its Rotterdam premises
“Moving to the new premises was a must for further development of the company and by this move alone we expect to achieve a double-figured growth,' he said
two-storey facility offers a storage area of 11,500m2
21 ‘green’ coldstorage units as well as 7,500 pallet spaces
the company is BRC and IFS certified and is a member of FoodCompass
Albert Heijn will open an automated Home Shop Center (HSC) in Barendrecht next year
employees won’t have to pack non-perishable products from the shelves to fill online orders because robots will do that automatically
The Dutch supermarket chain is working with Swisslog
a global warehouse automation and software supplier
The system uses robots and bins to quickly collect loose products
like a jar of peanut butter or a tube of toothpaste
“Nearly 300 robots will soon be driving through the HSC to collect the ordered groceries
This makes the work easier for employees,” Albert Heijn said
The completely gas-free building will be equipped with solar panels
and a heat pump for temperature control in the offices
innovation and sustainability come together,” said Albert Heijn CEO Marit van Egmond
calling them the main themes in the supermarket’s goal to make better food accessible for everyone
whose smart automation solution makes work more efficient and lighter
with our colleagues continuing to play a vital role in delivering groceries to our customers.”
Construction of the new building is already underway
Albert Heijn plans to open the location in the autumn of next year
The HSC will deliver 45,000 orders to customers’ homes per week
a new citrus washing line was installed at the location of Europe Retail Packing (ERP) in Barendrecht
The new MAF Roda line is currently undergoing extensive testing
According to location manager Cees de Vaan
the washing line can carry out the work of five people
Fewer human hands results in a faster process
fewer errors and a higher continuous quality
The new line has a capacity of 5 tonnes per hour
The new line is suitable for citrus in the broadest sense of the word and can therefore be used for oranges
The fruit is brought to the line from the box or bins
After an initial manual selection in which the rotten fruit is removed
the citrus enters the washing area and is then brushed and blown dry in the drying unit
the post washing selection takes place in the UV tent
whereby the cameras are able to detect the smallest fungal spots by means of UV light
"You can't always get melted rot out with the naked eye
but thanks to the UV light we can sort it out perfectly
That way only the very best citrus remains for packaging
further damage to the batch is prevented," said Cees
For Europe Retail Packing it is the first location with a citrus washing line
"Here in Barendrecht we are of course right at the heart of the citrus import and we have a lot of confidence in its added value
but a citrus washing line at our own location saves labour and ensures a higher quality end product."
"Customers are therefore very pleased with this new line
the citrus is ready in no time to be delivered to the customer spotlessly clean and fresh," Cees concludes

Fresh2You’s main trade will be moved to the new building at the trade centre in Barendrecht
wholesaler and cash&carry was founded about three years ago
and is already moving to a new building of as much as 5,000 square metres of cold store and another 500 square metres of office space
AGF.nl was given a look behind the scenes by Evert van Oers and Corné Roks
Barendrecht has hardly any Cash&Carry trade left
It turned out Barendrecht had a major need for it
but further inland in the Netherlands as well
We were personally surprised by how large this clientele still is
but we also manage to sell a good bit of Class II,” says Corné Roks
the cash&carry customers can be supplied even better
there are three cash&carry cells with temperature regimes of 12
but also greenhouse vegetables and bananas
and the pallets can be stacked three high.”
Please click here for the photo report.
“An advantage of the new building is that you can set it up as you want it,” says Evert van Oers
“Considering the growth we’re experiencing
we’ve chosen to build the entire plot of one hectare
Bias Architecten had a good design right away
Nijssen took care of the cooling technique
A lot of details were considered in the new building
the commercial department has a view of the warehouse
the cash&carry customers can stay dry when loading their purchases under the awning
and the new building has a lift and a disabled toilet.”
“We looked into whether BREEAM certification was an option
but we decided not to go for that in the end
because the investment compared to the number of square metres was unbalanced
We are becoming GPR certified for the sustainable construction
The building was constructed as sustainably as possible
and we’re using residual heat of the cooling to heat up the offices,” Evert explains
Fresh2You also plays an important role as a wholesaler
“It’s remarkable that a lot of people didn’t notice this lot at first
We made a conscious decision to establish ourselves on the existing trade site
We’re getting a lot of synergy from the site
but here we’re immediately connected to existing infrastructure
and we’re at a refurbished site,” Evert continues
Remko Oirbans and Martijn Valerius not pictured
“Quite a number of suppliers for European retail have their own production
When these companies can’t sell their trade
we’d like to sell it for them,” says Corné Roks
“We really distinguish ourselves because of our old-fashioned service
Customers are always welcome for a chat and a cup of coffee
they can load their trade within ten minutes.”
The majority of Fresh2You’s trade consists of bananas
The wholesaler supplies practically a complete range
and they want to expand even more in the new building
Fresh2You primarily imports from Southern Europe
the wholesaler created a furore with their own citrus brands Brixfruit and Famisa
the UK and Scandinavia being their most important sales markets
“Naturally it tends to be a bit quieter during the holidays

According to the newspaper, the man struck when his own children brought friends home or to their caravan at a campsite in Noord-Brabant for a sleepover. Insiders told the newspaper that he may have drugged the girls first
The man’s daughter is said to be one of his victims
The case came to light in September when two girls having a sleepover with the man’s children woke up unexpectedly while he was sexually abusing them
told AD that several parents are still reeling from the shock
“They are really wondering: what have we gotten ourselves into
Their lives have been completely turned upside down.” Many parents are having sex talks with very young children
“They are also worried: what will their children read about the case in the media later on
They are also extremely afraid that their child’s name will end up on the street.”
Hamers wouldn’t say much about the children
Parents mainly want their children to be able to remain children
The case has sent shockwaves through Barendrecht
The house where the Barendrecht man allegedly sexually abused dozens of children
located 100 meters from a playground and across the street from two primary schools
Locals are horrified about how large this case has become
but still… You don’t expect this,” one local told the newspaper
“He should not return here,” a 70-year-old local told the newspaper
There are many families with young children in this neighborhood.”
This new building is on the Barendrecht trade center in the Netherlands
It comprises a 5,000m2 cooling area and 500m2 office space
This move was followed by a new branch at the Antwerp wholesale market in Belgium
That was in April 2020. "It happened quickly; by now
we employ over 30 people," says Corne Roks
This Dutch company combines produce from its own farms and import line with that supplied by other growers
They make sales from both the office and the flourishing Cash & Carry
"Our vision is to further expand Fresh2You around two axes
we offer a wide range of fruit and vegetable products
there's hardly any cash & carry trade at Barendrecht anymore
That means they don't need any storage themselves
The Cash & Carry is where the promotions are presented
It has three cash & carry cooling cells
and store owners come to collect the goods themselves
But the Cash & Carry has a twofold function
Marlon Franken has 30 years of fruit and vegetable experience
we're fully committed to selling produce from our farms in Morocco and Senegal
That's done according to the Van Oers family's philosophy and decades of expertise
we're also going to start growing our own crops in the Netherlands," continue's Corne
Feel at homeWhen asked how the company grew so fast in such a short time
"It's thanks to the range of products we offer and the brands we carry
we want clients who come here to feel welcome
They get old-fashioned service and the feeling of being at home
Clients can help themselves to a cup of coffee and chat with the Fresh2You staff
We now have several German clients who come here every week to find merchandise
They load this under the awning where it's dry
They then have a bite to eat and drive back
That's why the smaller customers feel so valued
We also sell a few brands and products that clients come for
hasn't been bad for us," says Rob Langenberg
who's responsible for Fresh2You's citrus and banana purchasing and sales
the lockdown was announced very soon after we opened
That's a true cash & carry location because Antwerp has quite a lot of hospitality establishments
more and more clients find their way there
That site's long-term future looks bright."
We don't yet have a total package," says Rob
"But we do offer 80-85% of the total fruit and vegetable assortment
Our goal in 2021 is to expand our range even further
Then we can be a total supplier to our clients."
"Bananas and citrus are our top import products
we'll also start selling home-grown Senegalese mangos
we began a partnership with the Dutch strawberry grower HG Eerenburg
We expect the first strawberries in March," Rob concludes

Authorities in the Netherlands arrested the driver of a truck that was used to transport a massive shipment of cocaine valued at over 191 million euros
The truck was stopped near Barendrecht on Saturday
“When officers opened the doors of the shipping container
hundreds of blocks of cocaine fell onto the street,” the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said
He will face a hearing before an examining magistrate on Tuesday
who can choose to extend the suspect’s initial detention by up to 14 days
Officials in the Netherlands received a tip that a drug shipment from Belgium was headed to the Netherlands
and ordered it taken off the highway near the Zuid-Holland city
Once the bricks of cocaine tumbled out of the vehicle
a specialist team from the Dutch Customs office was called in for assistance
They drove the truck to a secure area at the Rotterdam port
The street value of the narcotics is more than 191 million euros,” the OM stated on Monday
General director Eric Barendrecht of AFL Barendrecht and Gert-Jan Metselaar
director of the New Reijerwaard Joint Scheme
have signed an agreement for the pre-reservation of a plot of more than 2.2 hectares (22,245 m²) at Nieuw Reijerwaard
Founder Alex and general director Eric Barendrecht of AFL Barendrecht with Gert-Jan Metselaar
director of the New Reijerwaard Joint Scheme (GRNR)
Former wholesaler Veiling ZwijndrechtThe Barendrecht Firm was founded in 1971 by Mr
"My father started as a wholesaler of fruit and vegetables at the Zwijndrecht auction
We moved from Zwijndrecht to the ZHZ trade centre in Barendrecht
where the activities were expanded to include fruit and vegetable im and export
At the turn of the century we slowly switched from a wholesaler / importer / exporter to providing logistics services in fruit and vegetables," says Eric
"At that time we were doing the storage of fruit and vegetables and we also started with the fruit and vegetable transport
We started with two trucks and have now grown to a workforce of 45 colleagues and 45 tractor units
In 2008 we took the container transport into our own hands in addition to our conventional transports to provide our customers with that as well
Currently we also work a lot with charters in transport
either for conventional freight or container transport
No expansion options on the Oosteinde"In 2008 we had to leave the three warehouses at the trading centre and moved from there to the Oosteinde in Barendrecht
Here we have grown so much over the past twelve years that we were unable to expand our activities
That is why we chose Nieuw Reijerwaard to expand our logistics activities and to be able to serve our customers better
The company is building a commercial building with parking spaces on Nieuw Reijerwaard
The building will be taken into use at the end of 2022
Gert-Jan Metselaar: “We are very happy with the interest of AFL Barendrecht in Nieuw Reijerwaard
We offer space for the necessary expansion for many companies in the region
Companies within fruit and vegetable logistics are certainly very welcome here
