While springtime is symbolic of renewed life
it is also a time of remembrance of those who have fallen in the line of duty.
Losing someone is hard. We all suffer loss
but for the families of law enforcement officers
and done while protecting communities against the kind of pain their family is currently suffering.
Being there to protect those who are unable to protect themselves
is a calling that few in law enforcement can ignore
It is a mission in which they are willing to leave their families
and they wouldn’t have it any other way
They understand that someone must make the sacrifice
Some have paid the ultimate price and never made it home. Their children
wishing they had said something different before you left … plans gone
special moments no longer possible. Just emptiness and pain
362 officers’ names are engraved on the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial
The first Friday in May of each year is the annual memorial ceremony where the names of officers who were lost in the line of duty the previous year are added
the FBI’s Special Agent overseeing Denver’s FBI office
had the idea to create a Colorado memorial to honor law enforcement line-of-duty deaths.
there will be a service in honor of those who have fallen in the line of duty at the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial in Golden
The names of the fallen being honored this year are:
There is also a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony scheduled on May 31 at 3 p.m
at Freedom Park in Edwards to honor all veterans and first Responders who lost their lives in the line of duty
There’s also the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington
honors over 23,785 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty since 1791
the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s schedule for May includes a National Police K9 Memorial Service on May 11
a Police Unity Tour Bicycle Ride-In on May 12
and a Shomrim Ceremony and Candlelight Vigil on May 13 on the National Mall
there will be a Stand Watch for the Fallen at midnight
You can light a virtual candle for the fallen at the Memorial Fund’s website
Clint Eastwood will match your gift of $37 or more and the fund will light a virtual candle in your honor
You can also visit the Officer Down Memorial Page, which is a fallen officer database at ODMP.org
It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the lives and sacrifices of America’s fallen law enforcement officers
With over 26,000 officers lost in the line of duty since 1776
the Officer Down Memorial Page preserves their legacies by providing a meaningful platform for surviving families
and the public to remember and pay tribute to their courage and service
I will end this column with an anonymous poem (no author attribution listed)
“I’m Home.” While it reminds me of families left behind
let me go.I have so many things to see and do.You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears.Be happy that we had so many beautiful years.I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness.I thank you for the love you have shown. But
if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for a while that we must part.Bless the memories within your heart.I won’t be far away
call and I will come.Though you cannot see or touch me
I’ll be near.If you listen with your heart
when you must come this way alone,I’ll greet you with a smile and say,“Welcome Home.”

2025ShareThese Viral Slides Have the Best Arch Support—and We Have a 10% Off Code for W+G ReadersBeek sandals look as good as they feel on feet and are deceivingly supportive
Calling it now—they're the shoe of the summer
Making a purchase through our links may earn Well+Good a commission
Scroll on to read my full review after trying two styles of Beek sandals for myself
and explore a few other bestsellers from the brand
One thing to note: Spending over $200 for a pair of sandals isn’t something I’d normally recommend
but after trying them myself I have to admit: I understand the markup
Because you're a W+G reader you can use code WGBEEK10 to score 10 percent off your purchase
Aside from being super cute, Beek sandals are hand-crafted with the utmost care and quality. After all, the hand-made leather sandals have made the rounds on TikTok, with billions of views and no shortage of fans
According the brand’s website, each pair takes around 48 hours to make from start to finish using ultra-soft vegetable-tanned leather that only gets softer with every wear
Throw in a footbed with memory foam and a molded arch
Beek also has a give-back program and works with organizations to fight childhood hunger. For every pair of Beek shoes sold, the brand donates roughly five meals through the Childhood Harvest Strategy and Second Harvest Food Bank
the color selection is originally what brought me to Beek
there are also plenty of versatile neutrals
Style aside, the amount of support in these sandals really is next level
The Beek Pelican Leather Platform Sandal features a molded memory foam footbed with a slightly lifted rim for your feet to settle into
and the Beek Sugarbird Slide Sandal has a memory foam footbed with sculpted arch support (despite being a super thin
I’ve not seen this level of construction in a flat sandal—it made me do a double-take
uses a leather-wrapped molded footbed that provides arch support and plenty of pressure relief
The entire upper of this shoes is made with soft leather
while the grippy rubber outsole keeps you grounded so you can bop around town
The Sugarbird is lightweight and low profile
but still provides plenty of arch support and cushion in the molded footbed
Even the top straps are leather-wrapped memory foam for maximum comfort
Like the Pelican (but without the added platform)
the Gallito sandal features memory foam cushioning in its molded footbed for support and pressure relief
It's the most elevated flip flop in town
The Sunbeam is made with the brand's signature molded arch support
and a foam-padded insole for long-wearing comfort
this toe-ring style sandal will mold to your feet in the first few hours of wear
the Finch sandal does still feature Beek's molded arch for added support

James Van Der Beek shared a powerful message that I believe everyone needs to hear
Per the American Cancer Society
colorectal cancer begins in the colon or the rectum
"These cancers can also be called colon cancer or rectal cancer
Colon cancer and rectal cancer are often grouped together because they have many features in common."
The ACS includes that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States
"There's no playbook for how announce these things
but I'd planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon… to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms
But that plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news."
Out of the six high school jumping competitions at the 2025 Penn Relays, only one was won by an American. That one was the high school girls long jump championship won by Lilly Ver Beek of James River in Virginia.
a multiple-time state champion and national champion from Virginia finally got her gold watch after numerous tries
This year the stars aligned and she took care of business.
but the background information makes this win even more special
One of the leading causes for Lilly just now getting the win at Penn
despite being favored in some previous competitions
is the change in schedule and a tiny bit of luck.
one thing you should know about Lilly is she is a team player
She wants to be with her teammates and if that means sacrificing her own goals
That is normally how her Penn Relays would go
she would get into a rhythm and then have to run over to the exchange zone and run the relay with her team
it finally worked out where she could focus on her jumps before the relay.
In the competition itself she started out strong
Her first mark was her second attempt where she landed a 19-2.75 wind-legal mark
She would then foul her third and fourth attempt before jumping the exact same 19-2.75 on her fifth attempt.
Then it was time for her sixth and final jump
By this time she was sitting in third place trailing two Jamaicans with one Jamaican right behind her in fourth
stormed down the runway and jumped a monster 19-11 mark in negative 2.1m wind to take over the lead.
Lilly seems to always show up for her last jumps
and in many other competitions she has had" - James River Coach Cornell Core
Though she had to wait for one more jumper for it to be official
she was already celebrating her big mark and how she took care of business the best way she could
Elizabeth Tech's Chloe Palmer jumped 19-9 on her final attempt
Lilly took down the Jamaican national champion and national runner-up for Class 1
finally got herself that Penn Relays Watch
and she would say her biggest prize was her team's 48.16 school record in the 4x100m relay just minutes after the awards podium.

Leicestershire will take a lead of 209 into day three of their Rothesay County Championship match with neighbours Northamptonshire after 16 wickets fell on a dramatic second day
The Division Two leaders bowled out Northamptonshire for 191 to lead by 113 on first innings, after Logan van Beek had taken 4 for 47 and Ben Green an excellent 3 for 17 in an impressive display of seam bowling
Allrounder Justin Broad's 36 represented a modest top score for the visitors
Northamptonshire's Ben Sanderson then single-handedly reduced Leicestershire to 52 for 5 in their second innings before they closed on 96 for 6.
The day's drama began in the second half of the morning as Northamptonshire's response to Leicestershire's first-innings efforts unravelled at pace, five wickets falling for 14 runs in the 30 minutes before lunch.
Until then, batting had looked less hazardous than on Friday as the first 21 overs of the day rewarded the home attack with only the wicket of Luke Procter, trapped on the crease by Josh Hull.
But then, with a relatively sunny start giving way to cloud, 73 for 1 became 87 for 6 in the space of 41 balls with the bowlers again finding movement through the air and off the pitch.
Green, the seamer from Somerset in his fourth loan spell in two seasons at Grace Road, began the collapse via a catch behind the stumps as a swinging, bouncing delivery glanced off the bat of Ricardo Vasconcelos as he tried to leave.
Tom Scriven dismissed George Bartlett leg before in the next over before Green's movement deceived James Sales, who was bowled shouldering arms. Netherlands international van Beek then took two wickets in two overs immediately before lunch, pinning Rob Keogh and then Lewis McManus leg before.
Northamptonshire were thus in disarray at 87 for 6 at the break, after which 191 all out at tea was better than they might have feared, Broad showing some fight to make what might be valuable runs before a good ball from Scriven found the edge.
Sanderson and Harry Conway then frustrated Leicestershire by adding a plucky 34 for the last wicket before Sanderson was caught at first slip for 18. He had two escapes - on nought, when Rehan Ahmed wasted a run-out chance by missing the stumps from two yards, and 1, when he was dropped at first slip.
Green was the culpable fielder, although he more than made amends with a masterclass in seam bowling, picking up his third wicket when extra bounce had Calvin Harrison caught at third slip. Green conceded only one boundary, bowling 71 dot balls from 84 deliveries in total.
Van Beek, who had earlier had Saif Zaib caught at third slip with a superb delivery, dismissed Sanderson to raise his tally for the season to 14.
Northamptonshire's 10 wickets had fallen in the space of less than 50 overs but there were no immediate signs of conditions becoming easier as Sanderson then proceeded to rip through Leicestershire's second innings, their lead suddenly looking slim as they floundered at 52 for 5.
Rishi Patel, compiler of a brilliant first-innings hundred, was tamely caught behind on the leg side without scoring, while Budinger, after a typically explosive 39 from 24 deliveries - including five fours and a six off Sanderson - followed four consecutive boundaries by chopping on to his stumps.
Sanderson then had Lewis Hill edging to third slip and Rehan to second, either side of a second-ball duck for skipper Peter Handscomb, trapped squarely in front. Sanderson's last four wickets had come in 10 deliveries, the only runs conceded for a no-ball.
The second of Sanderson's five took him to the milestone of 400 wickets in first-class matches for Northamptonshire, having earlier passed 1000 first-class runs for the county.
Ben Cox was sixth out at 75, gloving Conway down the leg side, before van Beek and Ian Holland, the latter hit on the helmet by Procter, survived a tough 12 overs to the close.

Beek Grosh passed over to the other side Tuesday
moved to Rehoboth Beach in the summer of 1983
As he and David were fond of saying about this change in geography
The Grosh boys were given the best welcome new arrivals to the area could hope to receive: attendance at Rehoboth Jr
Beek fell seamlessly into Rehoboth and beach life
where he was a standout in football and baseball
where he graduated and had continued success on the baseball diamond
he never lost the pride of being a Seahawk
Beek had a storied career on Rehoboth Beach Patrol
he was the second-youngest rookie in the history of the patrol
He valued those years with the patrol and the friendships he made all his life
He would laugh that Beek laugh anytime he told a story about those days
There will be an informal get-together at 1 p.m.
All are invited and encouraged to act accordingly
It didn’t take long for me to start hearing the name Beek Webb
I looked at a house on Prince Street that had a slightly sagging floor toward the kitchen
but the realtor told me Beek Webb would say “leave that floor alone.” That was the first time I heard his name.
Within weeks I was hired to lead a string band at St
“would be great if we could get Beek Webb to play his mandolin.” I tried to reach out
I began to hear Beek’s name in more and more musical references
sometimes prefaced by “the legendary…”
I ran into a Charleston “legend” named Roger Bellow and he asked if I had played with Beek yet
but I felt myself becoming more curious … and somewhat intimidated
Then my buddy Roland McIntosh (who taught with me at Beaufort High) said he was going to a “jam” at Beek’s house on Tuesday night and suggested I attend
I got up my courage and took my guitar into a little building on Beek’s property called the “Sunday School.”
I walked into a room containing about 12 musicians – fiddles
and a washtub bass played by Beek’s cousin Alan Webb
I heard joyful music and found that I was able to follow along
Everyone there was encouraging and I noticed immediately that Beek was “holding court.” All the players looked to him for direction
and I noticed right away he was professional
The Tuesday night jams became a source of mental therapy for me as I was struggling to build a choral program at Beaufort High School
As timed passed I started to play a few solo acoustic gigs around town.
Then I got a call to play some tunes at the Rhett House Inn on New Year’s Eve
I sheepishly asked Beek if he’d do it with me and to my surprise he enthusiastically replied “yes.”
Thus began a 20-year journey playing restaurants
We actually played for the grand opening of Roper Hospital’s new cardiac operating room in Charleston … in the operating room
Beek was equally known and respected as a builder and THE authority on historic home restoration here in the Lowcountry
If you attended a party or event where Beek was present
you might have noticed a group of seven of eight people gathered around him just listening to him talk
but the fact is he taught me so much about so many things
Beek’s passion for music and life will live on with so many souls fortunate enough to cross his path
I may have been just a blip on his musical screen
but our partnership and friendship will always be a highlight of my life
(The video linked here is of Beek’s dog Capo, who is quite a singer, but prefers to sing only with Beek’s mandolin. That’s our friend David Dowling sitting nearby, and a glimpse of Cathy, Beek’s beloved wife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qldtg6N3a5k )

protesting brings romanticized thoughts of tie-dye shirts
and grass (not the lawn type). Some would call them the good ol’ days
our parents might recollect the following from their 60s era
the epitome of protesting. If you weren’t a square
you’d pick a protest that you could get jazzed about
and we were stoked! We had rights … the First Amendment in action. Free speech was boss
and everyone wore that peace sign on their tie-dyed shirts as an emblem of a transformational generation. We blitzed the community with Andy Warhol
and Twiggy. Our world was outta sight. You should have been there — it was way out
we made sure not to show up looking grody. After running a brush through our long hair
slipping into our threads and Birkenstocks
and finishing off with our trend-setting round shades … we looked anything but lame. Our gals selected their best pedal pushers and tennies
looking totally fab. Some would toke Mary Jane before truckin’ out the door.
we had to schedule protests on the weekends so that our teacher wouldn’t flip her wig. You can bet your bippy that the protest had to be scheduled during the day
so as not to interfere with our Friday night submarine races.
while thinking about our midnight race for the pinks.
but we also knew that going too far was a downer
and our message would get lost faster than a suit at a drag race.
we had to make sure things didn’t get too hairy
There were limits to our expression of the First Amendment
but ultimately sought to maintain boundaries of respect … to our fellow protesters
We didn’t want anyone getting uptight. No destroying property
or trampling on another’s rights. Plus
we weren’t cruisin’ for a brusin’ … peace was our motto
and we didn’t want people freaking out. Law-breaking would defy our purpose
and things could get really heavy. Can you dig it?
We’d then bug out to crash at our pad
followed by mellowing in front of the boob tube
watching some chrome-dome complain about hippies
we face the same concerns as our parents did in the ’60s and as others do across the country
There is much global turmoil and national disruption that is causing distress within communities
The uncertainty of change is distressful for everyone
As a nation designed “for the people,” protesting displeasure with our government leadership is protected within the First Amendment. As with all rights
we must be cautious not to abuse the privilege of our nation. Respect for one another
is critical to getting your voice heard and inspiring change
We live in a close community and the ability to disagree
while also maintaining friendships is essential to our overall harmony. The people on the other side of these issues are the same people we work with
and enjoy life with … don’t blow it over a different perspective. Of course

"Today's my birthday, and it has been the hardest year of my life," James said in a selfie video shared on his Instagram March 8
right Which was never really all that fulfilling
"I could define myself then as a loving
steward of the land that we're so lucky to live on
that felt like a really good definition to the question
I had to look my own mortality in the eye."
James revealed last November that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023.
"I had to come nose to nose with death," he continued. "And all of those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me. I was away for treatment, so I could no longer be a husband that was helpful to my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider because I wasn't working."
The actor, who lives with his family on a ranch near Austin, Texas, said he "couldn't even be a steward of the land" because he would sometimes be too weak to prune trees.

James also thanked his fans for their support
"As I move through this healing portal toward recovery
I wanted to share that with you because I think that revelation that came to me was due in no small part to all the prayers and the love that had been directed toward me
"And so I was faced with the question," he continued
weak guy alone in an apartment with cancer
James has leaned on support from his loved ones as well as his faith
"I meditated and the answer came through," he said
"And if the word 'God' trips you up
I can't claim to know what God is or explain God
My efforts to connect to God are an ongoing process that is a constant unfolding mystery to me
you can take the word 'God' out and your mantra can simply be
'I am worthy of love.' Because you are."

It is with great sadness that I share the news that Beaufort lost a great and humble man recently
a man who truly embodied everything “Beaufort,” passed away peacefully at his home on Coosaw Island this past week
I got to know Beek through my work at the Open Land Trust
We could sit for hours talking about the importance of connecting our kids and grandkids to nature so that future generations would care about this place
He served on the Open Land Trust’s board for several decades — a conservationist with saltwater in his veins and pluff-mud in his bones
he crafted what may have been the first conservation easement in our region to save Bay Point Island — decades before the idea became known
a place that he and his friends inhabited as much as their own homes back in Beaufort
helped Beek to articulate his love of the Lowcountry
It’s also how he knew the importance of kids having special places to explore and learn from early on
he asked each one of his friends to sign his manifesto agreeing to principles that would not only protect his campsite
The manifesto closed with “May we all strive towards perfection in the pursuit of these principles and may the great God of Gale Brake be with us always.”
His life was spent saving the places and things he loved most
From the Robert Smalls House to The Green and the historic sea island cotton fields on Coosaw Island
Beek’s vision and heart are everywhere you turn in our community
although he already seemed to know more about everything than anyone I’ve ever met
Beek shared a thought that resonates now more than ever:
“The life we have now is the only one any of us can be sure of
We all need to do the very best we can.”
We are committed to continuing his vision for a place where people and place are connected and where people approach life with curiosity and fellowship
we thank you for being part of this community and for helping us keep Beek’s spirit alive through the work we do together today
If you’d like to read his obituary, you can do so at https://bit.ly/4hSYZVW.
They say that the best way to honor someone you’ve loved and lost is to embody the best of them
as we save the land that he and so many others love

The actor revealed to PEOPLE in November that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer and had "reason for optimism"
parenting and pop culture for more than 15 years
The actors’s wife has been by his side since his cancer diagnosis last year
"I had to look my own mortality in the eye," said the Dawson's Creek alum
"I had to come nose to nose with death."
There's nothing like a brush with death to make you reflect on your life
It's so easy for all of us to get caught up in the day-to-day details of living and not take the time to ponder the deeper elements of existence
from the nature of the universe to the meaning of life to our own individual role in the big picture
Existential questions can sometimes feel overwhelming
but actor James Van Der Beek shared a thoughtful 48th birthday message with his own life reflection after facing cancer
and it distills a lot of the angst of those questions into a simple yet profound answer that's hitting home with people
Van Der Beek, who starred in the millennial favorite Dawson's Creek, announced he'd been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2024 at age 47
Van Der Beek shared the progression from his somewhat unfulfilling identity as an actor to "the ultimate" identity as a husband and father prior to his cancer diagnosis
steward of the land that we're so lucky to live on," he said
that felt like a really good definition of the question
I had to look my own mortality in the eye," he continued
"I had to come nose to nose with death
And all of those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me
so I could no longer be a husband who is helpful to my wife
I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them
I could not be a provider because I wasn't working
I couldn't even be a steward of the land because at times I was too weak to prune all the trees during the window that you're supposed to prune them."
He found himself facing the question: "If I am just a too-skinny
So often we define ourselves by our roles in life or by what we do
with nothing external to anchor us to a particular identity
"And I meditated and the answer came through," Van Der Beek shared
I offer that to you however it sits in your consciousness
I certainly don't know or claim to know what God is or explain God
But if it's a trigger or if it feels too religious you can take the word 'God' out and your mantra can simply be 'I am worthy of love.' Because you are."
warm delivery and universal message of love and worth hit home for a lot of people
Fellow celebrities and fans alike praised and thanked him for it:
This was absolutely beautiful 💜🙏🏻💜," wrote singer Chris Daughtry
"You’re a gift to this earth and I’m grateful to know you even if it’s just through IG
Greatly admire the graceful way you share and happy you made it around the Sun again," wrote New Kids on the Block's Joey McIntyre
"I watched this with Bodhi with tears in our eyes and Bodhi said 'that was really touching' thanks for being love James and sharing that with everyone
Battlestar Galactica reboot's Katee Sackhoff wrote
"Thank you for your vulnerability and wisdom ❤️ Amen!'
You are pure love my friend," added actor Nikki Reed
"Worthy of it all… hoping to hug all of you soon
Some people took issue with Van Der Beek saying people could remove the word "God" from the message if they wanted to
but the reality is that not everyone has positive feelings about God or religion
and some have even been deeply hurt by people weaponizing them
Van Der Beek making a message of love more universal so that everyone can take it in and benefit from it without barriers or hang-ups is part of what makes it so beautiful
He was able to express his own religious/spiritual experience without shying away from the terminology that was true for him
while also making sure that his message was accessible to everyone regardless of faith or belief
Perhaps we can all take a lesson from Van Der Beek's sincere
Pura’s inaugural impact collection honors both sacred traditions and sustainable futures
it’s easy to forget that lasting change is built on trust
Real impact doesn’t come from rushing toward an end goal or measuring success through lofty metrics
It comes from falling in love with the problem
and sharing a vision for lasting transformation
Pura, the smart home fragrance company that marries premium fragrance with innovative technology, recently launched its inaugural impact collection with K Farmer Dutjahn Foundation (KFDF) and Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils (DSO)
The Pura x Dutjahn partnership began with a clear purpose: to source a sacred ingredient directly from its origin while honoring the land and the people who’ve cared for it
Our goal wasn’t simply to find sandalwood — it was to find a community and an ingredient that embody exceptional land stewardship
After careful research and over three years of development
luxurious ingredient while supporting a regenerative supply chain that invests in Indigenous-led education
an Indigenous tribe from the vast Western Australian desert
Martu are one of the oldest living cultures in the world
they have unparalleled ecological knowledge
making them the traditional custodians of the land
Their approach to sandalwood harvesting isn’t driven by market demand but by a deep respect for seasonal rhythms
Their work adapts to the environment—whether it’s “sorry time,” when mourning pauses activities
or the harsh desert conditions that make travel and communication difficult
a deliberate rhythm shaped by millennia of experience
Martu’s ecological knowledge isn’t documented in baseline reports
and practiced with rigor and respect for the changing needs of the ecosystems
True partnership means unlearning the typical approach
It means standing beside—not in front—and recognizing that the wisdom and leadership we need already exist within these communities
as I spoke with Chairman Clinton Farmer and the KFDF team about our focus for this piece
I learned that Clinton’s truck had broken down (again)
leaving him to “limp” back to town from the desert at low speeds for hours and hours
and brings real financial and emotional strain
These barriers are relentless and persistent
part of the harsh reality Clinton and his community face daily
we need to truly partner with communities — equipping them with the resources to operate sustainably
and protect the very land they love and care for
All while they endeavor to share these incredible
sacred ingredients with the world and build an economic engine for their people
The future we need will not be built in quarterly cycles

Christine Kesteloo has become popular on TikTok with over 680,000 followers because she shares what living on a cruise ship is really like. Kesteloo is the wife of the ship’s Staff Chief Engineer, so she gets to live on the boat for free. She only has to pay for alcohol and soda, which she gets for half off according to Business Insider.
“I live on a cruise ship for half the year with my husband
and it's often as glamorous as it sounds,” she told Insider
she's basically on a permanent vacation
even though she lives on a cruise ship as a “wife on board,” there are a few things she either can’t or shouldn’t do
She shared these four things in a TikTok video with nearly 10 million views

Kesteloo says she cannot sit at a slot machine and “play my heart out until I win.” She believes it would “look a little weird if I

When the ship arrives at a destination, she can't get off with the guests. She must wait about an hour and exit the vessel with the crew. When returning to the ship, she also has to be on time. “No, they will not wait for us,” she says. And the same goes for her husband
media1.giphy.com
she’s cautious not to interfere with the guests' good time
She’ll exit the pool if it’s busy because “it’s just the right thing to do.”

She must have insurance in case of a misfortune on the ship
they already have coverage and just have to pay a few extra dollars a month
Though folks generally welcomed Kesteloo's advice
some of the most popular commenters on the video were from women regretting that they married men who aren’t chief engineers on cruise ships or those who want to know where to find a single one
can you explain how to marry a cruise ship engineer?" one female commentator wrote
H E double hockey sticks do I become the wife of a cruise ship engineer???
I don’t have to work AND cruise for free!" another added
"Does he have any single friends with same job??

Woman's tweet convinces thousands they have pinworms
But is this something adults also need to worry about
Mary-Cate Delvey
"Friendly vet tech PSA to please deworm yourselves
you can get pyrantel pamoate on Amazon and it tastes like a banana smoothie
Why are fecal parasite screenings not part of human healthcare
File:Strongyloides Storcoralis Lifecycle Diagram.jpg - Wikimedia ...commons.wikimedia.org
Well, you can't say something like that in the big giant world of the internet and not expect a disproportionate response. But she's not the only person to either ask the question if people should be deworming as frequently as they deworm their pets, or even suggest that deworming is essential. Sure, pinworms are extremely contagious and here's why–their eggs are practically microscopic
carried under the fingernails and stick to everything
Basically anything an infected person touches now likely has eggs on it
you now have undetectable eggs on your fingers that can end up in your mouth for the parasite to start its life cycle in your small intestine and rectum
It's certainly a vision to behold in your minds eye but even given their contagion level
are they really so contagious that you need a monthly dewormer
File:Hookworms.JPG - Wikipediaen.m.wikipedia.org
But the post sparked lots of concerned replies with one person writing
this is my most unreasonable phobia."
While Delvey's post was more of a claim than a question
she's not the first person to think regular deworming should be common
a quick search will pull up multiple people pondering the same question
it's a general question of human deworming without specifying which parasites you're trying to rid yourself of
The medication the vet tech tells people to get treats pinworms
which as mentioned previously are easily spread from person to person
the person infected with them would be likely become very suspicious that something was a little off
Pinworm eggs get trapped under your fingernails for one very uncomfortable reason. Nighttime scratching of an itchy anus due to the worms coming out while you're sleeping to lay their eggs around your...uh...butthole
Chances are if you're not consistently resisting the urge to get up from your bed and scoot your bottom across the carpet in your bedroom
Other parasites have more alarming symptoms that would certainly have the average person seeking medical attention in a developed country
But in the United States, pinworms are the most common intestinal parasite as parasites like ascaris are spread through soil contaminated with human feces
Almost all other intestinal parasites are contracted by either touching soil contaminated with eggs and touching your mouth with an unwashed hand or in the case of hookworms
walking barefoot on soil contaminated with hookworm larvae
the first two are contracted by eating undercooked meats of animals infected with the parasite
while flukes are contracted by drinking contaminated water or eating infected fish
According to the World Health Organization (WHO)
"Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are among the most common infections worldwide with an estimated 1.5 billion infected people or 24% of the world’s population
These infections affect the poorest and most deprived communities with poor access to clean water
sanitation and hygiene in tropical and subtropical areas
with the highest prevalence reported from sub-Saharan Africa
This means the likelihood of parasites running rampant in the intestines of everyday Americans is pretty slim outside of the occasional pinworms a child might bring home
even that doesn't necessarily require an urgent visit to the doctor
It's more of an annoyance than anything else due to the itching as the medication needed is sold over the counter at your local pharmacy for around $10
Even the testing for pinworms doesn't involve anything super scientific that you'd need to spend hundreds of dollars on a lab test. According to the CDC
people worried that they may have the pesky parasite can simply put a strip of scotch tape near their bum hole first thing in the morning
The eggs will appear on the tape though they're small and will likely need to be seen with a microscope
do you need to have a family deworming night every few months
though any concerns about possibly having a parasite should be discussed with your primary care doctor
"There is just so much pressure on social media to be perfect."
Stephanie Murphy shares her "average" home in viral TikTok video
Lets normalize “average” because there is nothing wrong with it
Everywhere you look on social media you see big gorgeous houses in perfect condition and its hard not to compare yours to them
But its not the norm and half the time its staged
and its filled with love and tons of memories and at the end of the day thats all that matters

the early riser lifestyle works: Australians who wake up early are reportedly more productive and happier

Before heading to work or to school, many Australians start their day with exercise classes, surfing, or some other outdoor activity. “I’m all about not setting the bar impossibly high,” says Turia Pitt

Sasha Friedman and the actor jammed out to the 'Minecraft Movie' hit
Jack Black surprises girl battling cancer on her birthday
The two connected via video for an epic chat and some singing
they bonded over his recent film A Minecraft Movie
and his viral song "Steve's Lava Chicken"
"@jackblack surprised a 13 year old fan battling cancer on her birthday 🥹❤️ Can we wish her a happy birthday
Garza first surprises Friedman with some birthday cash
before telling her he has a second surprise
"I have someone who wants to meet you right now
Will you come with me right now to meet him?" In the next clip
Friedman is sitting in front of a computer screen
and Black excitedly raises the roof with his hands and says
Is it true?" Friedman is smiling from ear-to-ear
- YouTubewww.youtube.com
"She was just talking about you yesterday!" And Garza adds in the caption that it has been Friedman's dream to meet Black
"I was singing your song!" Black asks
"Were you singing 'Lava Chicken'?!"
"Sadly yes," as Black laughs and responds
You can't escape my 'Lava Chicken'!" Then
who starts dancing and mouthing the words with her
that was the most beautiful rendition!" he tells her
and Friedman shares more about her cancer journey with him
"I've been fighting cancer for three years now
"And I had part of my skull removed." Blacks says "wow" again
"And that was probably the hardest part
and it was really great getting to talk to you and hang out with you for a little while." Before they end the call
"Can I get a 'Chicken Jockey' before you leave?!" And Black happily gives her one in dramatic fashion
someone just came in the room...who is that
CHICKEN JOCKEY!" They all laugh together
And the video of their meeting received so many positive comments. Friedman herself wrote, "Thank you so much @isaiahgarza and @jackblack
You made it one of the best days of my whole life." Another viewer added
"Jack is one of the best people in Hollywood seems to actually care for his fans." And another wrote
Great guy all around." And another also commented
"I appreciate when public figures do this
You can tell that Jack made this girl’s day
I hope she continues to fight cancer courageously

we caught up with Richard Beek to find out more about his career path
proudest projects and the people who've inspired him along the way
and a big part of what I love about the role is how varied it is
meeting press and influencers… it never gets boring
Between 1996 and 1999 I did a lot of work experience - unpaid work on films
I grabbed any opportunity that came up to be involved in filmmaking
but it helped me build lots of contacts and eventually the unpaid work started to turn into paid work
One of my first paid jobs was on a horror movie called Grim
it really couldn’t be further away from the work we do at Aardman
Check it out on IMDb - the reviews aren’t kind and if you’ve got 90 mins you never want back you could watch it and see my cameo as a security guard who gets attacked by the monster
Fun fact - it wasn’t my acting skills that won me the role
I was the only crew member who fitted the costume that had been hired
– that was my first Project Manager role on a feature film
Shaun the Sheep series 4 and Shaun the Sheep Movie were both really fun to work on and I loved the ‘make do and mend’ approach we had on those projects
Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas – I’m really proud of how much we achieved with a relatively small budget
and obviously the recent Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
The response to Vengeance Most Fowl has been amazing
I can’t really describe how proud I am to have been a part of it
Ha ha! I’m not sure I’m equipped to answer this question; my work habits aren’t always healthy
Having a senior role is responsibility I take seriously
but what I have learned is that although I take the work seriously
I try not to take it personally – since realising that I’ve felt a lot less stressed and much happier
My Dad – he’s responsible for my love of films; Tom & Jerry
taking me to see a Star Wars double-bill aged 5 – we’d spend hours watching films together when I was younger
often they’d be my choice and lots were probably totally rubbish but he never grumbled
My Mum – I think Mum would make a brilliant Producer – determined and full of energy
Bob Mortimer – his hairstyle inspires mine

Mar 16, 2025 2:37 PM EDTJames Van Der Beek celebrated his 48th birthday by sharing what he has learned—about the world and his place in it—since being diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer last year
The actor gifted his Instagram followers with a video on his birthday on March 8th
which he captioned “What I got from my 48th trip around the sun.” In it
he shared some of the wisdom he has gained over the years
since first rising to fame in his early 20s as the star of Dawson’s Creek
But being diagnosed with cancer changed all that for the father of six. “I had to look my mortality in the eye; I had to come nose-to-nose with death,” he explained, describing the past year as the “hardest year of my life.”
What has been most challenging for Van Der Beek is being “stripped” of all those words and titles he used to so proudly define himself. As his cancer treatments have taken him away from home for long stretches of time, he could “no longer be the husband that was helpful to my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider.”
Ultimately, Van Der Beek says he was “faced with a question: If I am just a too skinny, weak guy, alone in an apartment with cancer, what am I?”
It took some self-reflection, and a bit of meditation, but Van Der Beek eventually found the answer to that question. “I am worthy of God’s love,” he stated, “simply because I exist. And if I’m worthy of God’s love, shouldn’t I also be worthy of my own?”
Van Der Beek then took a moment to address his fans directly and declare that “The same is true for you… I offer that to you; however it sits in your consciousness, however it resonates, run with it.”

Living in a place with such seasonal variations makes transitions a time of excitement as we contemplate new outdoor adventures. Yet
we extend our winter sports for as long as possible because we wait all year for those first few flakes of snow to arrive and aren’t quite ready for them to disappear
we must transition our approach to mountain activities
as Mother Nature isn’t always as cooperative to our adventurous spirit as we’d like.
our approach to mountain sports must adapt.
we have witnessed tragedies in the mountains
Whether it’s allowing our imagination to outperform our actual skillset
or simply a lack of awareness of the changing trail conditions and its associated dangers
Freeze-thaw can lead to terrain variances that can create perilous conditions because the surface appears solid
slush can greatly impede our movement forward
and unseen tree stumps can cause fatal impacts. Potholes can become impossible to crawl out of
and the near freezing water can cause hypothermia and increased drowning possibilities.
All of this is compounded by avalanche conditions. Those beautiful white peaks can come tumbling down with even the slightest movement delivered at precise angles. Thus
this week we will focus on spring and avalanche safety
make a quick call to the forest ranger for updates
It should include recent wildlife activity
and other information. Understand that when it comes to the backcountry
think of it this way: If someone told you that you had a chance of getting punched in the face by going somewhere
what level would be acceptable? Would “considerable” or “moderate” be acceptable
An avalanche can be triggered by activities located as far as a quarter mile away. To reduce the likelihood of being caught in an avalanche
stay away from angles that are greater than 30 degrees … it will look similar to a blue run
Begin your outdoor expedition early in the day because the hike or cross-country ski trek may take longer than expected and you don’t want to be stuck in the mountains in the dark
When minutes make the difference between life and death
your best chance of living through a disaster comes from your backcountry partners. It may take search and rescue as long to reach you as it took for you to get there. Make sure everyone has taken avalanche training beforehand
as backcountry exploration requires a unique skill set
Communication between party members is critical. Bring a satellite phone and walkie-talkies
as cell reception is generally limited. Carry an avalanche transceiver (rescue beacon)
It emits a unique signal that rescuers’ equipment can interpret as visual or audible displays. Avalanche shovels and probes are essential in testing snow conditions and locating and digging out those submerged. Avalanche airbags may help you rise to the top of avalanche debris
With partially thawed snow and repeated freeze-thaw cycles
a thin ice cover can result in a catastrophic fall down a mountain slope or spark an avalanche below. Trekking poles and crampons will help considerably
Bringing a rope for steep descents is a good idea
Ice axes help to break up a slippery trail
but be cautious because they may cause a rockslide
Large wildlife and seasonal sports gear can create deep holes in the terrain
The spring thaw-freeze can disguise these mudholes
causing stealth hazards that can easily break a leg
While trekking poles can warn of what’s ahead
it’s impractical to probe every step of an entire trail
That lake where you drove your truck this winter may look the same
Warmer weather has caused cracks and thawed the ice to the point of easily collapsing if you attempt to cross it. Use trekking poles to check density and listen for hollow sounds beneath
keeping in mind that you may not be able to accurately detect its ability to sustain a vehicle’s weight. Walk around the ice
use snowshoes to redistribute your weight. Getting trapped under river ice will most certainly be fatal
When traveling in areas where avalanches are likely
thawed ice can loosen rocks to the point of tumbling downhill
picking up smaller rocks on the journey. If you must be in a hazardous area
Bears are surfacing out of hibernation and mountain lions will be on the prowl
to avoid surprising wildlife which could prompt a defensive attack that might not have otherwise occurred

DAWSON’S CREEK star James Van Der Beek says his 47th was the “hardest year of his life” as he battles stage 3 colorectal cancer
but he found solace in knowing he’s valuable to God
On his 48th birthday on March 8, Van Der Beek said in an Instagram video
“Today’s my birthday and it has been the hardest year of my life
and then I became a husband…it was much better and then I became a father…that was the ultimate.”
His struggles with cancer have forced him to “look my own mortality in the eye,” he said
“I had to come nose to nose with death
And all those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me.”
Not being able to be an available husband and father to his six kids took a toll on him
so I could no longer be a husband who was helpful to my wife,” Van Der Beek continued
“I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them
I could not be a provider because I wasn’t working.”
He questioned if he was “just a too-skinny
alone in an apartment with cancer…what am I?”

“I wanted to share that with you because that revelation that came to me was in no small part to all the prayers and the love that had been directed toward me.”
He added there’s a lot he doesn’t know about God
who he says is still a “mystery” to him in some ways
if it’s a trigger that feels too religious

James Van Der Beek is opening up about the emotional and physical ravages of his cancer battle
saying he had an epiphany after coming “nose to nose” with death
The Dawson’s Creek alum revealed in November 2024 that he’d been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and had been privately seeking treatment with the support of his family
which includes wife Kimberly and their six children
And in a recent Instagram video
Van Der Beek said he had to reconsider his self-image amid his bout with cancer
[and] steward of the land we’re so lucky to live on.”
All of those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me
so I could no longer be a husband [who] was helpful to my wife
I could not be a provider because I wasn’t working
I couldn’t even be a steward of the land because at times I was too weak to prune all the trees during the window that you’re supposed to prune them.”
A post shared by James Van Der Beek (@vanderjames)
he didn’t know who he was during his time as “just a too skinny
Through meditation, however, the Varsity Blues actor understood the answer to his question of identity
And as I move through this healing portal toward recovery
I wanted to share that with you because I think that revelation that came to me is due in no small part to all the prayers and the love that had been directed to me.”
And Van Der Beek — who promoted prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer awareness through the Fox special The Real Full Monty in December — told Instagram followers that if his revelation feels too religious

On "GMA," Van Der Beek shared that receiving his diagnosis at first "felt like a nightmare that I couldn't quite wake up from." He said that about 90% of the time
he has felt that the cancer would require him to make changes to his lifestyle that would make him ultimately grateful in 30 years that the diagnosis happened
which I feel like is a pretty good percentage," he said
The actor recently told fans on Instagram that he would be selling lookalike autographed jerseys from the 1999 movie "Varsity Blues," with 100% of the proceeds going "to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own)."
