Dutch strawberry grower Royal Berry has purchased 16 hectares of land in the former Huissense greenhouse area Leutensche Leigraaf. The strawberry grower buys out a livestock farmer, an amaryllis grower, and two fruit growers, reports De Gelderlander
The livestock farmer is moving his business
while the fruit and flower growers are ceasing operations but will continue residing on the property
They will also keep a portion of the land to grow fruit and cultivate nuts
"This arrangement allows them to gradually phase out while still living here
which was a crucial condition," entrepreneur Jan Van Genderen explains in the newspaper
Scale ExpansionThis spring, he explicitly expressed his growth ambition
possibly also outside the greenhouse area NEXTgarden
"When I mention that I am also looking beyond our current horticultural area to grow
people sometimes still look at me in surprise." The strawberry company cultivates in glass greenhouses
the strawberry entrepreneur expects that 80 to 90 percent of the strawberry volume from the Netherlands will be grown by a limited number of larger growers
The municipality must now approve the plans of the strawberry grower with the purchased land
The municipality is also considering a housing plan
The grower wants to build a residential park for international workers near his greenhouse location at the Clivia

Patients with COPD experience changes in voice pitch and jitter during the onset and peak of an exacerbation
according to a poster presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress
“Our findings pave the way for future tools to help people manage their own exacerbations with speech applications,” Loes van Bemmel
PhD student and researcher in the department of respiratory medicine at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands
“Hopefully our findings help lessen the burden on everyday clinicians in the future
and for now convince people of the importance and potential use of speech analysis.”
Using the TACTICAS smartphone app
van Bemmel and colleagues assessed speech recordings of 28 patients with COPD taken three times a day for 12 weeks to examine differences in speech at onset and peak of symptoms of a COPD exacerbation vs
Patients filled out the EXACT questionnaire once a day
so researchers knew when they experienced an exacerbation (score ≥ 9 points above baseline for 3 days or ≥ 12 points above baseline for 2 days)
According to a press release from the European Respiratory Society
recordings captured patients “saying ‘ahh’ for as long as they could manage with one breath
then either reading a short paragraph of a story or answering a question.”
The Praat computer program allowed researchers to extract 25 speech features
voice breaks and jitter from sustained vowel /a/ in patients’ morning and evening recordings
68.6 years; 36.4% women) had at least one exacerbation
the study cohort reported 16 COPD exacerbations
researchers observed a significant difference between baseline and exacerbation onset in terms of minimum pitch (73.84 Hz vs
101.48 Hz; P < .05) and number of voice breaks (11.75 vs
minimum pitch in the morning was significantly higher at exacerbation peak vs
73.84 Hz; P < .01) and the number of voice breaks was significantly lower (4.6 vs
the speech feature that significantly differed between baseline and the exacerbation time points was jitter (breathy or hoarse sounding voice)
Local absolute jitter was significantly higher at exacerbation onset and peak vs
baseline (118.39 µs and 104.23 µs vs
jitter measured as five-point period perturbation quotient was significantly elevated at onset of an exacerbation vs
0.62%; P < .05) and at peak of an exacerbation vs
“Even though we hoped for it, we were surprised to see that the speech characteristics already change significantly the first day of the exacerbation,” van Bemmel told Healio
“We expected the speech to be different during the peak of symptoms
but finding significant difference on the onset day is very nice
“In future studies we will validate our findings with more data and design algorithms to predict exacerbations by speech as well,” van Bemmel said
we will design an app specifically for people with COPD to also employ the algorithm.”

Clasina van Bemmel has been a fighter throughout her 77 years
She left behind her abusive family in the Netherlands at age 16 to become a nanny in England
she had taught herself three languages on top of Dutch
She founded the Vancouver Trolley Company shortly after being laid off by selling her car to afford a down payment on an 11-seater tour van
With no formal business training and only a grade 7education
van Bemmel built a thriving company—and was named Canadian Woman entrepreneur of the year in 1994
van Bemmel found herself with everything—a new home
and a community of coworkers and friends who felt like a second family
and now is in the midst of a second career as an artist from her home in Victoria
But she found herself thinking of the chance she had to pass on her good fortune to those who
Van Bemmel sold a plot of land she owned in Squamish
and put the funds towards providing opportunities for others to succeed through a charitable foundation
“I always felt that [the land] didn't belong to me,” she said
“So that's when I decided to start the Compassion in Action Fund
the Compassion in Action Fund has given thousands of dollars since 2016 to groups including the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre
the Victoria Women's Transition House Society
development manager for the Victoria Women's Transition House Society
says the $20,000 her organization has received from this fund since 2018 has allowed for the shelter to make vital upgrades including a new washer
and furniture for living rooms and bedrooms
“The significance these donations hold for the women we support is really about dignity
and knowing that they are cared for by their community,” Gross said
“Thanks to Clasina and the Compassion in Action Fund
women can read to their children on a clean and comfortable couch or cook a hot meal together in our cozy shelter kitchen
It has helped to ensure our shelter is a safe and comfortable temporary home for women and their children fleeing domestic violence.”
van Bemmel and a small group of women access the pool of grant applications to determine which will receive $5,000
Van Bemmel maintains the same voting power as the other grant committee members
with the sole caveat that the charities must support a better future for women
van Bemmel says this annual cycle of giving will outlive her
The Vancouver Foundation invested her initial donation
half goes back to invest in keeping the fund going in perpetuity and half goes to that year’s beneficiaries
she says she can’t disclose the amount of her initial donation
“Both of [the accounts] keep growing,” she said
which has gone towards their No Pet Left Behind program
It provides temporary crisis foster care for animals of people who are experiencing a crisis in their lives
[the program] saves lives because we know that women who are in violent situations often will not leave if there's not a safe place for their pet,” said Kathy Powelson
executive director of Paws for Hope Animal Foundation
“And so by having the opportunity to place their pet with us for a time while they seek safety
it's saving their lives and also their pets.”
The No Pet Left Behind program pays for food
and any veterinary work a pet needs while in their temporary home
The program relies solely on funding from grants and donations

When not managing the Compassion in Action Fund—and occasionally visiting the groups she has supported—van Bemmel spends time in her home in Victoria
Retirement has allowed her to discover a new love of art; first in carving
and recently she has tried her hand at painting
she donates the proceeds in the buyer’s name to the Compassion in Action Fund
Her work is currently on display across North America
she holds onto a piece that sits close to her heart
Van Bemmel doesn’t have much left of her childhood in the Netherlands
But hanging two stories high at the centre of her home is a sculpture made from the last piece of home she has left: a wooden carrying pole her grandfather once used to bring water from a well
but I was not able to carry them with me on my travels,” she said
From it hangs more than a dozen sticks of colourfully painted bamboo
Knowing she had already gone through the worst challenges she could face as a child gave her the strength to overcome the obstacles she went on to face throughout her life
she hopes her legacy will help others lift themselves up from their own darkest moments
it's me giving back to Canada the success that I had in my businesses,” she said
A daily summary of what's happening in Victoria
The third and final day of the €3,000 Mystery Bounty Championship at the 2022 PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour reached its conclusion after roughly nine hours of play
The final 23 players out of a field of 1,132 entries played down to a winner on Friday afternoon and at the end
a new EPT champion emerged in Johannes van Bemmel
who is plenty experienced in the online streets
capturing a €251,726 first-place prize and a beautiful piece of "Spadie" silverware
He also captured a total of 10 bounties for an additional €23,000 for a total win of €274,726
This was far and away his largest live score
besting a fifth-place finish at a tournament in the Netherlands back in May
Van Bemmel started the final day in 14th place among the 23 remaining runners with just 1,010,000 chips
but he was able to fight his way back and capture the famous EPT trophy
"I started below average with a million and there were many tough players left
I quickly was able to triple my stack to three million and I began to think that maybe this would work out but I still didn't have any hopes or expectations," said van Bemmel
I busted a lot of tournaments but this one just felt good
I had ace-king against ace-queen maybe six times
I played my hands well and we're here now."
The win comes at an incredible time for the player as he just quit his job only two months ago
"I did good at poker and I didn't love my job as much as I did before (as an account manager working for a big corporate company)
I was busy trying to set up my own business but poker went well so now I'm trying to do a combination of both
So I stopped working and I came to Barcelona and now this
go on holiday in Italy with my wife and friends
and then we're going to play again."
including PokerStars Ambassadors Parker Talbot and Jen Shahade
who finished in 20th place (€12,200) and 11th place (€23,230)
The original 23 would very quickly reach a final table and were already down to seven players at the very first break just two hours into the day
The first player eliminated at the final table was Silma Macalou
Day 2 chip leader Anthony Miles had opened to 275,000 and Macalou went all in for 1,100,000 with ace-jack
Miles called with ace-ten and Macalou would flop two pair
Miles would hit a runner-runner straight to send the Frenchman home in heartwrenching fashion with €30,210
Felipe Germano opened for 275,000 and Fischer moved all in for 815,000 with ace-king
Van Bemmel cold-called with pocket nines and Germano surprisingly open-folded pocket jacks
Fischer would not get any help and earned €39,280 for his efforts
Seven-handed play would continue for nearly two full levels before Saar Wilf was knocked out
Wilf limped from the button with ace-seven and Paulo Roberto Brombim checked with king-jack
Wilf would flop bottom pair and bet 200,000 but Brombim raised to 550,000 with top-two pair and Wilf called
who was an aggressive chip leader at the time
shoved turn and Wilf would go into the tank for about four minutes before making an incorrect hero call
The river was not the one he was looking for and Wilf earned €51,050 for his three days of work
Daan Mulders would be the next one to leave the table and took home €66,360 for his sixth-place finish
Mulders went all in from the button with queen-ten suited against Miles' ace-seven suited from the big blind and wouldn't improve
In fifth place was the aforementioned Germano
who came into the day as one of the short stacks and was still the shortest stack at the two-table redraw and the second-shortest stack going into the final table
the Brazilian managed to grind his way to fifth place and €86,270
His journey came to an end in a huge ten-and-a-half million chip pot with Brombim
failing to improve with ace-king from the button against his opponent's pocket jacks
It would be another 90 minutes of four-way action before Miles would finish fourth
Miles was short-stacked and shoved with queen-seven suited against the ace-six of Brombim
Miles wouldn't get there and he took home a whopping €112,160 score
The remaining three players would battle until they were eventually even with roughly 20 big blinds each and facing an increase in blinds every 20 minutes
They took about 30 minutes to come up with a deal that paid €200,000 for third
Twenty minutes after the deal was agreed upon
His ace-deuce suited was no match for the ace-five of Van Bemmel and the Dutchman went into heads-up play with Brombim with a three-to-one chip advantage
The two players would battle heads up for about 25 minutes
with Brombim giving Van Bemmel plenty of fits
The Brazilian doubled up on three different occasions and
hit an unlikely river to stay alive despite being dominated preflop
shoving his last three big blinds in with nine-six and running into Van Bemmel's ace-nine
Both an ace and a nine would appear on the flop
which virtually guaranteed Van Bemmel the title
The turn had Brombim drawing dead and Van Bemmel and his friends burst into celebration
Van Bemmel would then go to redeem his bounties and collect the last remaining €5,000 bounty for the cherry on top
which was the highest bounty still remaining on the board

Frasers Property Industrial acquired a 10.8 hectare brownfield development site at business park Pannenhuis in Bemmel
a state-of-the-art distribution centre comprising two premium 15,000 sqm warehouses will be constructed
and benefits from its close proximity to the A15 highway and the cities Nijmegen and Arnhem
Development of phase one will start in the third quarter of 2021
In collaboration with Over Engh Vastgoed as a development partner and Hercuton (part of Janssen de Jong Groep) as the general contractor
the new distribution centre will be constructed according to the latest modern building standards
targeting the certification BREEAM-NL' Very Good' or higher
each with about 15,000 square metres of warehouse space
as well as separate office and mezzanine spaces of approximately 588 and 1,200 square metres
the distribution centre can be leased by one or two customers
Managing Director Europe at Frasers Property Industrial
comments: "We are excited about our fourth acquisition site in the Netherlands within six months and are particularly looking forward to leveraging the Bemmel site's great location with our modern and sustainable development plans.”
"This brownfield development perfectly illustrates how old industrial land can be revived sustainably
and the site's proximity to the A15 highway and likely connection to the A12 highway in coming years supports its attractiveness for international transport."
Director at Over Engh Vastgoed comments: "We are looking forward to supporting Frasers Property Industrial and Hercuton in developing the industrial estate at Bemmel
adding optimal value to the site and its environment
We strive to make maximum use of our skills and competencies to ensure a high-quality development that perfectly serves the needs of Frasers Property Industrial's future tenants."
comments: "At this brownfield development with Frasers Property Industrial and Over Engh Vastgoed in Bemmel
we will combine modern construction techniques with high sustainability standards
We are particularly enthusiastic about redesigning the site as a gasless building which follows the ongoing trend of industrial buildings going all-electric."
Commentary
I can sit idly by listening to this racist hatred no more
Canada prides itself on having created a tolerant and inclusive society
We are internationally recognized for reconciling subnational identities; we have legislated and even constitutionalized our practices of accommodation
We like to believe that this is an important part of our history and a defining feature of our country
Responses to the Idle No More movement suggest otherwise
These comments are based on negative stereotypes and misinformation that deprecate First Nations
The acceptance of them by the public only fosters conditions that allow the uninformed to discriminate further against First Nations
No other group in Canada is subject to these sorts of comments
With constructed superficial multiculturalism
we allow our selective memory to ignore our colonial legacy and current racial issues
We then question the position of First Nations
and spout that they should “join the rest of Canada” to be afforded the same rights and privileges as every other Canadian
many ethnicities have retained their culture under Canadian governance
We wonder why this isn’t working for First Nations
and that the answer must lay with equality
this notion of equality blankets the real issues
letting us forget the history and injustices committed
It is important to remember that Canada was not an empty land discovered by Europeans; it had already been settled for millennia
and that is precisely why the Royal Proclamation of 1763 identified respect for the lands of the “Indian nations” that inhabited them
The aboriginal peoples living here before British colonialism had settled these lands
and had developed their own cultures and languages
This is why we cannot classify First Nations alongside those who have immigrated here
First Nations are the ones who suffered the involuntary incorporation of their homeland
they did not make the decision to move here for a new life
This is exactly the reason why Section 35(1) of the Constitution Act upholds aboriginal rights
First Nations had been living here for centuries
Special legal and constitutional status has been mandated for First Nations because we are supposed to recognize their rights
and identify them as the original inhabitants and keepers of this land
the Canadian government acknowledges that First Nations have their right to a distinct society
and self-government in order to sustain themselves as distinct societies
This is why the White Paper on Indian (assimilation) Policy of 1969 was repudiated
and aboriginal rights were included into the Constitution Act of 1982
Public focus rests heavily on monetary handouts and accountability
reducing a complex and sordid history of colonialism
and residential schools down to entitlements and rights
Many Canadians feel First Nations are taking an unfair advantage with tax exemption benefits and other programs
The only tax exemption is limited to those who are situated on a reserve
as stated under Section 87 of the Indian Act
The courts maintain that this exemption reflects the “unique constitutional and historic place of Aboriginal people in Canada”
What happened to the relationship between Aboriginals and settlers that began with treaties of shared land and resources
These treaties were broken as more and more land was sought for profitable exploitation of natural resources
removal of First Nations and their rights and lands has been essential in Canada whenever they proved to stand in the way of exploitation for profit
Colonialism introduced European conceptions of what society is
and became the dominant way to think of progressive development
First Nations have been denied in the sharing
We need to be educated on the history of this country and to stop spreading misinformation and fostering hatred
We need to recognize that the land we currently inhabit has been inherited from First Nations at a great cost
The Government needs to be restructured to return to the relationship of respect and equality
before treaties were broken and European ideals were presented as the only concept of society and progress
First Nations need to have the choice to be able to govern their own affairs
whether it be traditional hunting and fishing or resource extraction and development
Alexis Van Bemmel is a geography student at the University of Victoria
Van Bemmel has a degree in history and First Nations studies
I would prefer the hunting and fishing over resource extraction and development...just sayin'
Just because you disagree with them does that make you a "RACIST" is the question
but as unfortunate as it is it goes both ways
I went to a protest to give my support and was told "whitey go home"
it upset me terribly as beside me was my native daughter
How do I tell her that her white mother is not welcome there
The Natives are not merely one more "multiculture" that decided to flee to here from some other part of the world they didn't want to stay in
and the newcomers only for at the most about 400 years
The fundamental culture of Canada is still
if we look at the foods we eat (corn and potatoes
our distinctive Canadian cultural practices
and fish as teens to "find themselves" and go on a "dream quest" or whatever
"Confederation" is a term coined from the 18th Century translation of the Iroquois Great Law
Most of us non-Natives are really the descendants of refugees
and the influence of the Natives on them was pretty strong
The rhythms of life here have very ancient
I'm not disputing the impact of the British and French cultures here too
we would all be learning the "Ancient Languages" of the land
or in Greece where they all learn Ancient Greek
Here we would be learning and taking pride in the ancient languages and cultures of our land
where we don't respect the culture of our new found country
We don't value the 40,000 years of heritage and pride right here
We had better recognize that we are Canadians
people arent always supposed to have to beg to get what is status quo harper et al
send your ambassadors lying around the world saying how great canadas infrastructure is
and you will hopefully always be wisely judged as precarioius to do business with with this legacy of avoiding pertinent humanity issues and making people beg for what they are already to have received
is why you are losing your grip on this nation
after the exposure of the human traficking
the counterfeit stamps that bankrupted the postal service in 2013
it is so you would pay more attention to what you were doing wrong at home
shameful and continuing in not providing what you have guaranteed every community of this nation
its putting you dangerously close to being lawless in the full
you are falling apart because of this maltreatment and you inability to lawfully provide what your laws have said you would
Some of these posters still don't get it
The issues are about Political jurisdiction (section 35
It's not about "race" at all
But I was taught that if you don't have anything good to say
don't say anything at all.So let me tell you about 'native americans'..
I would say that most people would agree that native people did not discover
Global warming,Mercury in fish,Clear cutting,UV rays and increased skin cancer,Melting Artic Icepacks,Nuclear weapons or meltdowns,Meth
The letter he wrote is pretty silly if you think about it
Bemmel's article here is pretty good and I agree with his main point that people should be educated in how things work in Canada and it's First Nations
Why don't we go to italy and tell the Italian people the Romans were here once and they should leave
i am an immigrant to canada and i think it is a two way street
I did a course in university about the history of the first nations people and i remember quite distinctly that there were times i supported the natives and at other times i supported the government of Canada..
There needs to be equality and the treaties need to be upheld...but accountability is also important....canadians feel like so much money has been invested in the reserves with very little to show for it and a lot of people are frustrated....there is no reason why people should not have the basic neccesities of life in a country like Canada
Your hair was short-cropped and dyed orange
