A new principal has been named for Summerland Secondary School
Chris Van Bergeyk will begin his role effective Aug
he has worked as a vice-principal at Kelowna Secondary School
he taught mathematics at Georg Elliot Secondary School in Lake Country and at Burnaby South Secondary School
Association of Math Teachers and is the lead author for the Pearson Pre-Calculus Math 11 text and the Pearson Pre-Calculus Math 10 text
Van Bergeyk is looking forward to his role in Summerland
“It’s an outstanding school and community,” he said
He added that the relationship between the school and the rest of the community has been strong in the past
“We want to be seen as a real champion of Summerland,” he said
Van Bergeyk has been in Summerland to familiarize himself with the school and said he is impressed with what he has seen so far
“I feel very fortunate to be in this school,” he said
“I have not heard a single bad thing about the school or the community.”
Van Bergeyk has a Master of Arts degree in leadership and training from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia

A Salmon Arm Secondary grad was recognized for her academic excellence over the 2020-2021 school year
Claire Van Bergeyk recently received the Governor General’s Academic Medal
awarded to a student who achieves the highest average upon graduation from a secondary school
Salmon Arm Secondary (Sullivan campus) vice-principal Noah Ralston presented the award to Claire on June 13
She appreciated receiving the award and thanked staff and friends who helped through high school
This school year Van Bergeyk continued with academic studies at the University of B.C.’s Okanagan Campus (UBCO)
and is spending the summer working at a vineyard to save up for the upcoming year

Claire is looking forward to returning to studies in biology in the fall
and a little time set aside for mountain biking
Claire also shared advice for other hard-working students
“You don’t have to have it all figured out,” said Claire
“Things can and will change; make sure you are enjoying what you are doing while you pursue your goals too.”

one project led to another for rietveld and other influential dutch architects
and eventually the suburban landscape was an established cultural landmark attracting prominent designers
architects and artists. things came to an end in the economic crisis of the 1980s

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function

there were smiles all around from the more than 60 cyclists that took part in the fourth Shuswap Cross Cyclocross event at Klahani Park on Sunday
Racers ranged in age from two to 60 and races featured kids
recreational cyclists and the elite men and women
The event was the last of the season in the BC Interior Cyclocross Race Series
the track was revamped and featured more obstacles
The race itself consists of many laps of a short course featuring wooded trails
and obstacles which require the rider to quickly dismount and carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount
Ella Mills and Marika Meerza finished in second to fourth
while Ian Van Bergeyk was seventh and Erika Peasgood finished eighth
Salmon Arm riders swept the podium in the U15 race
Keith Hepburn and Dan Holmes finished in first and second respectively
A team of four Summerland Secondary Students will hold a car wash later this month to raise money for two charities
Rachel Shanner and Aliya Van Bergeyk are participating in the Summerland Rotary Club’s $100 challenge
The challenge gives students $100 to use for a fundraising initiative
The four students had chosen to hold a car wash event
They put the call out to organizations in the area and received responses from 10 groups
The charities they selected are the Summerland Music Camp and the South Okanagan Similkameen Mental Wellness Society
appealed since they wanted to raise money for use within the community
While the mental wellness society is based in Penticton
the money raised will go to an initiative in Summerland
“The opportunity to help two charities was a big plus for us,” said Freistadt
the four students will also cook meals for Rotary members during an upcoming Rotary training day
