crash near Borculo according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office The crash happened on Port Sheldon Street near 72nd Avenue around 9:47 a.m A 55-year-old Coopersville woman had been traveling north on Port Sheldon Street when she did not stop at an intersection and collided with another driver The crash pushed the 55-year-old's van into a ditch temporarily trapping her 72-year-old passenger The 72-year-old was rescued and taken to the hospital the 55-year-old was cited by deputies for failure to yield The schoolhouse eventually became the Schoolhouse Restaurant which was said to be haunted by the spirit of a student who was killed by a mean-spirited teacher While the eating establishment went out of business years ago The Borculo schoolhouse was constructed in 1876 the schoolhouse was rebuilt with three rooms and the existing structure today is at the same location Legend conveys that a teacher at the old schoolhouse “had accumulated a reputation as a teacher who was not afraid to implement drastic martial force to get her students to pay attention,” according to a paranormal website the cruel teacher supposedly struck a misbehaving student in the head with such force the child died instantly as a result “I never heard the ‘Miss VanMoss’ story until I saw it on the Internet a few years ago,” said Don Vandenbosch who operates the historical website www.borculo.us attended Borculo Public School for 10 years Don was born in 1940 and attended Borculo Public School for eight years “I assume the story was someone’s fabrication,” he added The school building closed when the district was consolidated with Zeeland Public Schools in the mid-1960s and then reopened as the Schoolhouse Restaurant in the mid-1980s The establishment was owned by Herschel and Shirley Weaver of Borculo but the Weavers sold out in the mid-1990s to John E and the restaurant didn’t survive long after that Claims of paranormal activity were said to occur after the schoolhouse became a restaurant Employees and customers reported seeing silverware mysteriously being hurled across the room and on occasion a “morose child” was spotted sitting alone in one of the booths staring out into the room without speaking a word Records show that a population of residents named VanOss (not VanMoss) lived in Jamestown Township when the schoolhouse began more than a century ago Members of the VanOss family still reside in Ottawa County but the most early residents are buried in the Graafschap Cemetery in Holland “I am not aware of a teacher by the name of VanOss but I wouldn’t say there was not,” explained Vandenbosch I had a student by that name who I think lived in the Hamilton area.” Whether or not a “Miss VanMoss” ever existed or was responsible for the death of a student one Borculo woman became infamous in September 1989 for contemplating murder hired a hit man to kill her former husband a son and heir of the co-founder of Bil Mar Foods Inc Betty Lou DeWitt was arrested and wound up being sentenced in Grand Haven before Judge James Townsend and sent to prison she wanted it to look like an accident,” Brink told the court “She didn’t care how it was done or where it was done Betty Lou DeWitt testified that she canceled the contract on her ex-husband one day before she was arrested DeWitt wanted her ex dead so their daughters could get their inheritance early The legend of Miss VanMoss is still told today Oberyn Red Viper ZL (by Blue Hors Romanov x Sir Sinclair) became the dressage price highlight of the 2019 Borculo Foal Auction on 29 August 2019 The Borculo foal auction or @BizHolland The recent successes at the KWPN Championships again underline Borculo Elite Foal Auction’s strong reputation former Borculo foals still set the tone when it comes to top results in sport as well as breeding Eye-catchers are three-year-old Lolana (ds. Vivaldi, breeder A. Dijkstra) who is sired by Borculo sold KWPN stallion Galaxie and won the national championship title, and also KWPN stallion Imposantos (Wynton x Krack C, breeder W. Wijnen) who repeated last year’s Pavo Cup victory with Bart Veeze. But even more successes were to come also for foals from the current Borculo Elite Foal Auction’s collection They finished in the National Foal Inspection’s top ten group an achievement Borculo foals have developed into a tradition Special Borculo Elite Foal Auction jubilee edition The 2019 dressage foal collection comes with high expectations Holding the Borculo Elite Foal Auction in high regard many renowned breeders again offered their foals to be reviewed Our selectors Linda van Doorn and Peter Wetzelaer assisted by scouts Emmy de Jeu and Marcel Sterrenburg applied the high Borculo standards in terms of conformation which resulted in a collection of strongly bred exceptionally moving dressage foals with a bright future in sport and breeding ahead of them These delightful foals’ sires are a wonderful mix of up-and-coming new talent and active Grand Prix stallions from Dutch Springbank II VH and Blue Hors stallions Kingston (2x) They were combined with outstanding and often famous dam lines rich in Grand Prix sport in several generations Full sister to legend Valegro and famous Dolly like Desperado part of the Dutch silver medal team at the EC supplies a striking filly whose De Niro dam is a sister to Grand Prix horses Orlandus (Lorraine van den Brink) and Partoes (David Wrightman) The popular Franklin supplies a colt whose dam also produced Big Tour stallion Nespresso (Anne van Olst) Blue Hors Farrell’s blood can be found in the colt (ds the dam of Just Mickey (2014 Olympic Games) and the granddam of Grand Prix horses Meggle’s Boston and Dolman we find the striking filly by Farrell’s half-brother Fürsten-Look bred out of living legend Valegro’s full sister finalist National Foal InspectionWhen it comes to discussing the best Dutch dressage lines the top-class foals from Ferro’s dam line (2x) and from the famous Charites’s offspring (4x) need mentioning United) even unites Ferro’s and Don Schufro’s dam lines Rousseau) from the Charites line is bred out of the dam of KWPN stallion Dorado (Anna Zibrandtsen) Blue Hors Kingston) from Charites’s legacy and he is the sire of the promising filly (ds Voice) from the strong dam line of Grand Prix horses Dark Knight Texel Belle Lady Texel and National Mare Inspection champion Iveniz Texel RS2 Also combining new and proven Grand Prix blood is the filly (ds Jazz) from Grand Prix stallion Donnerschlag’s line in his turn sired by the promising Valverde this five-year old stallion made quite an impression at this year’s Dressage World Breeding Championship for Young Horses The dam lines also contain quite some World Championship blood with examples like the colt by the proven Romanov out of two-time WC mare Zolena The blood of older stallions such as Romanov is somewhat more exclusive in this year’s collection Examples are the filly by Vivaldi out of Grand Prix horse Sacre Coeur’s full sister and a colt by Desperados FRH out of the line behind top mare Rasijgje and therefore a full brother to one of last year’s top lots Exclusiveness truly typifies this collection and is further reinforced by two colts by Dante’s Junior who passed away last year at the age of only four and a colt by Grand Prix stallion H-Ekwador who is rarely used in breeding wild cards have been given to striking foals Franklin is the sire of a fantastic moving colt out of a sister to games will include bounce houses for different ages “Probably the highlight of the whole thing is we have a barrel train that goes behind the church,” Machiela said There are around 60 entries in the parade of floats “A lot of handing out candy,” Machiela said “We give all the little kids on the parade routes yellow bags A family can come and it doesn’t cost them anything “How many places can you Estate: Well-Appointed Country House with Extensive Equestrian Facility in the U.K. Borculo CRC history has been passed down and added to through the years This is a revised version of that original text When the first settlers (some of whom came from Borculo How these early pioneers longed for their own place of worship They had to wait 18 long years before a church was established Walking would take less time than taking the oxen The swamp south of Borculo had many rattlesnakes mosquitoes and you had to be on the lookout for bears a group of settlers gathered at the home of J they moved the services to the local public school in Borculo had been an office-bearer in the land across the ocean finally it was decided to request Classis Holland to organize them as a separate congregation Brother De Haan pleaded the cause of this community so well that Classis decided to grant the request Its beginning was small; its struggles not a few who had visited us once and had already studied in the Netherlands He was a God-fearing man and willing to help (which otherwise were read by the elders) and he taught the people to live in the fear of the Lord Everyone who was able to do so donated their time and labor; and logs were brought by sleigh or wagon helped out by donating a quarter-acre of land at the Southwest Corner of the Borculo Crossing and did his share at the sawmill for nothing the first church building was dedicated for the service of the Lord Moeke and the first church came to its new location this church was torn down and a new and larger church was built on the same spot shall forever remain a sad day in the history of the congregation the congregation was forced to leave its house of worship and behold its stately building being turned into a huge pile of burning embers the new church building was solemnly dedicated to the service of the Lord Texas and Puerto Rico began coming to West Michigan to aid the farmers with the harvest of the pickle crop bringing more and more migrants into the area many of our people of Reformed persuasion invited them into our churches The majority did not accept this invitation they did not understand the English; also they had been taught that going to a protestant church was a very great sin The Borculo Church was very much concerned for these groups of migrants who had nominal affiliations with the Roman Catholic Church yet who knew not the way of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ gospel services were held Sunday afternoons in the Borculo School Different teachers of the Sunday school would take part in the work some teaching the children who would come to the meeting a Mexican minister of the Presbyterian Church who also would pick pickles during the week We also held street services on Saturday evenings in Holland In that way we would contact around 500 migrants a week The Fall of 1957 saw the opening of Borculo’s own Christian School an extensive remodeling of both parsonage and church was undertaken When Bohl’s Restaurant was torn down to straighten the intersection of 96th and Port Sheldon the Evangelism Committee of our church decided that we should take over the organization of the Dandelion Festival the goal was to reach out into the community showing God’s love to our neighbors by keeping the community’s tradition alive and to invite the community to free activities at the church A new ministry began in the fall of 2007 with Angel Food Ministries This is a food outreach program which the Local Evangelism Committee started in partnership with Ottawa Reformed Church From the very small group of 15 families of believers in 1883 to the many hundreds of believers here today we have seen time and time again that God has been faithful through all generations A year after the Borculo CSI Foal Auction’s première its success is clearly reflected in the upcoming edition’s exclusive foal collection The suppliers of top foals were convinced after this new concept’s introduction allowing our selection committee to top even the highest of expectations and form a truly superb collection of jumping foals for the auction taking place on Friday 24th May during Jumping Schröder Tubbergen Taking a closer look at the foals selected we first encounter powerful Bukowskey SR Z with a pedigree rich in World Championship medals Dam Anarchie is a sister to Orient Express who won the team as well as the individual silver medal at the 2014 WEG with Patrice Delaveau Great-granddam Loripierre (1.60m) is the dam of Dollar de la Pierre (Reynald Angot) Last but not least we find sire and top progenitor Berlin Number two Orlando Grandia is the attractive son of French super talent Candy de Nantuel (s Heartbreaker) performed at international 1.45m level The granddam is the well-known Sovjet Look (1.60m) This brings us to the abundantly lined Opertuno (s Laura Kraut) and her full brother Ocana (both 1.60m) The only filly in this collection is the alluring Enola’s Emerald Z This daughter of the mighty Emerald van ’t Ruytershof was bred out of the Corland dam Enola This sister to four international horses was responsible for one of the 2018 Borculo Foal Auction’s top lots.  The dam of the fifth foal Oelala is no stranger either Numero Uno) lightened up the 2018 CSI Foal Auction with her previous foal and is expected to repeat history with her current striking offspring by the phenomenal Halifax van het Kluizebos The sixth high potential presented is Ovation W stems from the reputable broodmare Delia W (s She is a full sister to Baricello (1.60m) and the dam of the seven-year-old Zangersheide approved Heavenly W (1.40m) Last nut not least Delia W is a sister to world-class horse Arrayan (Carlos Lopez) Shortly after the presentation of the six foals mentioned the selection committee managed to add a particularly exclusive foal to this collection by using the wild card We’re talking here about the appealing Charlie’s Talent Z a striking colt with a mouth-watering pedigree the undisputed number 1 stallion in the world who passed away too soon. Charlie’s Talent Z’s dam is On Verra van ’t Merelsnest. This Kannan daughter out of a world-famous BWP dam line is a sister to nine international horses including 5* crack VDL Glasgow van ’t Merelsnest (Jur Vrieling) Granddam Wendelina (1.50m) is the full sister to adoptions became finalized The Zwarts attended an adoption ceremony in Ottawa County Family Court “It feels great that we can finally close this chapter,” Zwart said Wednesday before the hearing were part of a group of about 80 Haitian children whose adoptions were expedited after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince The city is about 10 miles from the orphanage where the girls were living The Zwarts were told to be in Miami by 6 p.m The girls’ plane didn’t arrive until midnight every child had to go through customs before any could be united with their new families the next day before they could take Ermithe and Destinee home It was a painfully long wait for the Zwarts especially considering they began the process of adopting from Haiti in 2006 but couldn’t have any more biologically,” Cindra Zwart said “We decided Haiti would be our best option because it wasn’t too far.” The Zwarts visited Haiti to meet the sisters in November 2009 They were expecting to take custody sometime between March 2010 and March 2011 That all changed after the earthquake devastated the country “The earthquake expedited the process for some of the children who were already matched up with a family,” said John VanValkenburg “That’s why those children were selected to leave they’re still trying to figure out a year and a half later which children are truly orphaned.” Of the 80 children who arrived the same day as Ermithe and Destinee 58 were placed by Bethany Christian Services Ermithe and Destinee have adjusted well to their new lives They’re doing well in school and have fit right in with the Zwarts’ two boys “They fight just like regular siblings,” Zwart said dandelions in the lawn are a less-than-welcome sign of spring For over a decade, Borculo Christian Reformed Church has made the increasingly popular Dandelion Festival blossom each May “We wanted to do it as an outreach for Bible school,” said festival coordinator Bev Machiela, “to get the area kids comfortable at our church, to get their parents comfortable.”For over a decade, Borculo Christian Reformed Church has made the increasingly popular Dandelion Festival blossom each May Although many festival-goers contribute free-will donations from a community pancake breakfast to children’s carnival activities to hot dogs and all-you-can-eat popcorn “We can serve 2,000 hotdogs in an hour,” said Machiela Borculo Christian School also puts on a fundraiser barbecue dinner and a Fun Run during the weekend The church takes early VBS sign-ups during the festival and will canvas door-to-door in neighborhoods in the summer People have been much friendlier and more receptive to canvassers since the church began running the festival “The difference is huge.” They have also seen an increase in the number of children without a home church who attend the Bible school Putting on the weekend extravaganza is no small feat for the church “For us to take on something like this is kind of stepping out,” said Machiela most from the congregation and their extended families as well as local businesses and others in the community Susan Vanden Berg is a freelance news correspondent for The Banner every person and family in the CRC Give Now Every time Austin Weaver trimmed the end off a board to make a truss at Ottawa Roof Truss he looked at the scrap and figured there had to be a way to put it use he turned the scraps into wood shavings and sold them to area turkey farmers for bedding started converting the truss scraps into landscaping mulch Austin Weaver died of cancer shortly after the new company was formed and didn’t see the small business he helped launch in Borculo grow into one of the largest producers of landscape mulch in Michigan But our primary range is within 125 miles of Borculo,” said Nate Weaver Chuck’s son and the company vice president “It’s not uncommon for us to ship 40 or 50 (140-yard) semi loads of mulch in a day.” Michigan Wood Fibers is nearing the height of its busy season as landscapers and homeowners gear up for spring That means stockpiling raw materials and grinding the mountains of mulch that eventually cover the firm’s property from front to back the 20-acre site just off 96th Avenue north of town is virtually buried in mulch and materials waiting to become mulch some of the piles reaching up to 40-feet high The wood comes from forest companies and saw mills from pallet companies and furniture factories Michigan Wood Fibers is a place for them to dispose of scrap materials rather than burn it or dump it in a landfill But all of the products that end up as mulch have one thing in common — they are no longer useful to anyone else “We are kind of at the bottom of the food chain We are kind of the last resort,” Weaver said “If someone can take a log and saw that up and make a shipping pallet out of it there is more value to that than there is to mulch We are kind of a place for them to get rid of the materials without incurring such a large cost,” he added a lot of the wood was going to the landfill or they were burning it Once that waste ends up at Michigan Wood Fibers it is processed through the company’s grinders Depending upon the type of mulch being made the material often runs through the grinder two or three times huge magnets extract any nails or other metals from the mulch which is then brought out to the back of the property and allowed to age Some of the mulch is dyed in one of five designer colors — red The colored mulch is a growing segment of the company’s business mulch in general has been popular with home owners lately “The demand has been really great over the past few years because people spending more time at home and doing projects around the house,” he said Nate Weaver said the company does about 70 percent of its sales in the spring and early summer but production continues throughout the year in preparation for the busy season “Some people think we retire during the winter,” Weaver said “There is a lot of prep work getting your business in order so when it’s time to go you are ready to roll.” Michigan Wood Fibers has about a dozen full-time employees and adds four or five more to handle the demand in the spring The company’s primary customers are small garden centers churches and even some municipalities who use a large quantity of mulch Michigan Wood Fibers has been a family-run business Chuck and Nate have been joined in the business by Nate’s brother There are three other brothers who work outside the family business and several grandchildren who might be waiting in the wings to join the firm some day “We have a good solid business and we are keeping it going and hoping there is a little room for growth,” Chuck Weaver said “It would be really nice to keep it in the family.” Nick Schaap is locked in a life and death battle with cancer The 29-year-old from Borculo was diagnosed with melanoma two years ago went through a year of chemotherapy and thought he’d come out on top and doctors later told him he had six to 12 months to live “I couldn’t believe (the cancer) had gone from where you couldn’t see it on the scans to where we could bring up the scans on our home computer and you could see huge tumors all over my body.” Schaap traveled to the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit for treatments of the anti-cancer drug interleukin He is scheduled to return to Karmanos in February for his second course of treatment Though interleukin is the best defense for stage IV melanoma it has only about a 6 percent success rate ‘We are going to do whatever it takes to win.’ Whatever has to be done “It seems like there is so much unfinished work here with my wife and kids I want so badly to be part of graduations and weddings and grandbabies.” Schaap has three children from a previous marriage — 8-year-old son Logan 5-year-old son Dillon and daughter Makenna was married in mid-December after Schaap was rediagnosed When he received a clean bill of health in the spring They bought a five-bedroom home in Borculo over the summer and settled in for what they expected to be a long life together Schaap was happy to provide a stable home environment for his children who have been through a lot over the past few years custody struggles and his bout with cancer Now he’s worried what will happen to them if he can’t beat the disease I believe I know where I’m going,” he said “But I fought for quite a few years to get full custody of my kids “I want to be the influence for them and the one who raises them to be good The hard part would be missing out on their lives.” something his friends and family are calling “Nick’s Last Wish.” “My hope is that my kids would stay here and be in the home they love and be in the school that we’ve got them in,” he said Family friend Tabitha Kent has set up an account called Nick’s Last Wish on the social networking site Facebook hoping to raise money to help the Schaaps pay off the mortgage on their home Her goal is to get 2,000 people to donate $100 each The site lists two ways in which those wishing to help can donate directly to Chase Mortgage in Louisville or by donating to the Harlem Reformed Church benevolent fund visit facebook.com and search for Nick’s Last Wish Money sent to the mortgage company is not tax deductible and goes directly toward paying down the Schaap’s home loan Funds donated through the church are tax deductible and will be distributed to the Schaaps through the benevolent fund just as money might be given to any other family the church opts to help “It’s our goal to get that house paid off,” Kent said “Nick’s biggest fear is to not know that is family is OK.” Schaap knows if he dies there is no guarantee his wife would be granted custody of his three children would help Jenn gain custody if he is gone “The hope is that long term the kids can stay in this house because it’s their home,” Schaap said “And the hope would be that Jenn is taking care of the kids.” Nicks Last Wish is also set up to help inform people of the dangers of melanoma Schaap’s cancer came from a small mole on his back that he disregarded for several years the aggressive cancer eventually spread throughout his body and he now has several painful tumors It’s very important to Nick to do something bigger than himself and try to reach people and tell them to make them aware.”
