There is a restaurant in 't Gooi that is the only one ever to have a star Cared for
It gives the feeling of a cozy living room restaurant
Under the leadership of Dennis de Jong in the kitchen and Frank Velthuyse at the front
they serve all kinds of culinary things at Soigné
such as their signature dish: smoked eel with eggplant
All this accompanied by mainly wines from Portugal
Restaurant Soigne
Zonnestraal Vineyard
Where SEAson Arsenaal in Naarden was first a warehouse for military equipment, then a home furnishings store and showroom for the art and designs of Jan de Bouvrie, it is now a restaurant where they mainly serve fish and shellfish dishes. They call it accessible fine dining themselves, and if you book via tripper (four course dinner for 39,50 euros) it becomes even more
caviar; all the goodies (and more) from the sea
You will also find meat there (with a lot less focus on it)
and there are also options for vegetarians
so you can really go there with a whole group and everyone will still have something to choose from
The Arsenal
the little sister of star restaurant 't Amsterdammertje
Bistrotel 't Amsterdammertje on the Vecht in Nieuwersluis
but the bistro has no less than eleven rooms
So you don't have to call the designated driver
because after dinner you can just roll into your (luxury) basket
Another great recommendation is the Peking duck
It was provided with all kinds of loose ingredients so that you can make your own buns and pancakes
Bistrotel 't Amsterdammertje
Then last but definitely not least - Harbor Lake Village
You can sleep here in an ecological water villa in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve adjacent to the marina
The idea is to have a 'home away from home' to create a feeling
Decorate your stay with a classic sloop right in front of your villa
load up wine and cheese and sail across the Vecht
For the sporty ones among us: you can also rent a canoe or SUP
You don't have to leave your villa for dinner (of course you are allowed to)
because you can do the whole thing à la carte menu full service have it delivered to your own outdoor terrace during the sunset
You wake up in ultimate peace with a view of the water
after which another breakfast is brought to you
Harbor Lake Village
A day of walking Blaricum is not a bad idea at all
local residents founded all kinds of cozy specialty shops
You can get the best cardamom buns Sourdough Bakery Sisters Bakery
Then you get an ice cream at the cotton candy pink Ice cream parlor de Hoop
where the choice of flavors is huge (yikes!)
Get one over-the-top filled snack board for at home Loekie Delicatessen
Get your tastiest asparagus during the asparagus season care farm BoerenBlij. And you can have lunch or dinner in the romantic courtyard Bistrôt Chapeau
Then last but definitely not least - Restaurant de Tuinman (in the photo on the left) can be found on the grounds of Buitenplaats De Hoorneboeg
A vegetarian (with vegan options) restaurant with products from their own vegetable garden
under a cozy tent canvas and lamps - nice and fresh in the open air
you can also eat inside just as comfortably
This light greenhouse (or conservatory, you might also say) is really nice. Tasting room de Serre (in the photo on the right). You drive onto the estate via a forest path – nature all around. The menu responds to this: whatever is coming from the land at that moment is on your plate. There is also a large vegetable garden and a lovely field with horses and goats. You won't get more idyllic than here and both very kid-proof.
Adventures with Van Gogh is a weekly blog by Martin Bailey

stories range from newsy items about this most intriguing artist
to scholarly pieces based on meticulous investigations and discoveries

The idyllic house where Vincent van Gogh’s posthumous career was given a major boost has been threatened with demolition
Villa Eikenhof was built in 1901 for Jo Bonger
It is set in a wooded garden on the outskirts of the town of Bussum
Among the paintings which were once kept there were Sunflowers
Van Gogh’s Bedroom and around 20 self-portraits
A protest letter about plans to demolish the villa was published on Wednesday
Signatories included the directors of three key Dutch museums: Emilie Gordenker (Van Gogh Museum)
Lisette Pelsers (Kröller-Müller Museum) and Taco Dibbits (Rijksmuseum)
chairwoman of the Van Gogh Foundation and a great-granddaughter of Jo Bonger
Josien van Gogh told The Art Newspaper that the family believes it is of “the utmost importance” to preserve Eikenhof
In the early 1900s Jo used the villa as a base to encourage international interest in the work of the artist
then moved from Paris back to the Netherlands in an effort to start a new life
where she established a small guest house to earn a living for herself and her infant son

On 9 April 1901 the foundation stone was laid by the 11-year-old son of Jo and Theo
Vincent Willem van Gogh—who had been named after the artist
Jo married Cohen Gosschalk a few months later
and they called their new home Villa Eikenhof (Oak Garden)
Johan Cohen Gosschalk’s Villa Eikenhof in Bussum (1901-04) Owner: Private collection
Around 300 paintings and 500 drawings by Van Gogh were kept in the house
most were kept in a storage room on the ground floor and in the attic
It was from the Villa Eikenhof that Jo began to organise the 1905 Van Gogh retrospective exhibition at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum
which remains the largest show on the artist ever held
Hans Luijten, the author of last year's definitive biography of Jo Bonger (due out next year in English)
regards Villa Eikenhof as a key part of the “Van Gogh history”
From its rooms Bonger and Cohen Gosschalk “promoted the reputation of Van Gogh’s work and welcomed people from the Netherlands and abroad who came to see their collection”
was a hotbed of creativity—and home to the painter Jan Veth
the sculptor Lambertus Zij and the psychiatrist and writer Frederik van Eeden
It was Van Eeden who established the socialist commune he named Walden
after the 1854 book Walden: Or Life in the Woods by the American writer Henry Thoreau
which also served as a rest home for psychiatric patients
Johan Cohen Gosschalk and the young Vincent only enjoyed Villa Eikenhof for a few years
They went there to keep an eye on Jo's widowed mother and for the city's cultural attractions
Villa Eikenhof was rented out by the Van Gogh family until 1978
when it was sold after the death of the engineer Vincent Willem (who as a boy had laid the foundation stone)
In recent times the house was owned by an elderly woman and after her death it was resold last year for €1.6m
It is believed that the current owner would like to demolish the villa so that several houses can be erected in the large garden
Advertisement which appeared this week protesting against Bussum’s “cultural blunder”
The campaign to preserve Eikenhof is being led by an Amsterdam-based conservation group, the Heemschut Heritage Association
On Wednesday evening the municipal council of Gooise Meren (which includes Bussum) voted to call for Villa Eikenhof to be declared a monument
A key factor behind the decision was the protest letter against the proposed demolition with some very influential names
The municipality will now consider the matter and it will be open to the owner of the property to appeal a decision
So the threat remains; but there is now a reasonable chance that “the Van Gogh villa” can be saved
• London’s National Gallery has announced today that its Sunflowers are now “out of quarantine”. The museum's touring exhibition of 60 paintings
but this was blocked at the last minute because of coronavirus closures
The show will now open at Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art on 18 June and run until 18 October
It is then rescheduled to travel to Osaka’s National Museum of Art (3 November-31 January 2021) and Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia (5 March-14 June 2021)
This means that after the coronavirus delay the pictures will finally return to the walls of the London gallery next July

Courtney Van Bussum's startup FitStart Kids
a unique healthy-living tool for children struggling with obesity
ASU student Courtney Van Bussum is a locavore and at her happiest when hiking
or practicing and teaching yoga as a certified yoga instructor
is that if you aren’t outside hiking or inside doing yoga
you’re probably doing something wrong,” said Van Bussum who will be a junior in the fall
majoring in biomedical engineering at Arizona State University’s Ira A
Fulton Schools of Engineering within Barrett
that health and wellness became a driving force for Van Bussum’s startup FitStart Kids
It combines wearable activity-monitoring technology with mentorship
education and built-in gamification to help children adopt a healthy mindset
more than a third of American children were categorized as obese or overweight
children are spending more than two hours looking at screens
exceeding the suggested limit by pediatricians
Van Bussum wanted to harness children’s growing obsession with technology to bring about a behavior change
“I like to say FitStart Kids is changing the ‘game,’” she said
“We are expanding upon the world of virtual gaming by directly integrating fitness into the game itself
We are leveraging youth’s fascination with technology to shift gaming systems from being a reason for hours spent sitting in front of a screen
to instead act as the catalyst to get kids moving."
Here’s how it works: FitStart Kids uses Fitbit activity trackers to equate steps to incentives and rewards that can be used to buy upgrades
bonuses or new features within the virtual game environment
Participants design their own unique character or avatar in the game
They can challenge teammates and compete against other teams to win prizes
while receiving bonuses from answering health questions and meeting nutrition goals
who is the director of the Fulton Engineering Startup Center and has mentored Van Bussum and team
said that even though FitStart Kids is still in its initial developmental stages
“Courtney was recently selected as the Student Innovation Winner for the Social Venture Partners Fast Pitch Challenge
winning $2000 toward the venture,” he said
“As part of Fulton Schools’ Prescott Fellows program
she also flew to Silicon Valley with other ASU students to meet and gain advice from successful entrepreneurs
Van Bussum is also one of only 22 students from across the country selected by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council to be part of their 2015 Student Entrepreneur Program cohort and one of the five finalists at the program’s pitch competition
director of the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program
FitStart kids has come a long way since starting as an EPICS design challenge that focused on finding creative ways to help combat childhood obesity
“Courtney has been passionate and focused on making a difference in the area of health
and the EPICS program has given her a vehicle to let her true talents and abilities shine,” said Shrake. “She’s a rock-star and I can’t wait to see what else she accomplishes.”
Van Bussum credits the extended community she found at ASU for her success thus far
“It is only with the help and support of the passionate individuals I have met at ASU that I have even gotten this far,” she said
“I would encourage any student who wants to make a startup idea happen or anyone who wants to be on a startup team to just start
The experience and insights gained alone are invaluable.”

A new ASU program intends to get kids off the couch and play outside by incentivizing exercise with video games.
FitStart Kids is tackling the growing issue of childhood obesity throughout the U.S
Biomedical engineering junior Courtney Van Bussum created FitStart Kids three years ago to change the landscape of childhood activity by combining wearable technology and video gaming to get kids active
The combination uses step count and calorie usage to measure activity goals.
After reaching certain goals using the activity tracker
the child can sync his or her tracker to the FitStart Kids website and receive rewards
The rewards are called FS game coins that can be used to upgrade or get bonus content on various video games on today’s leading consoles
Bussum, the oldest of five kids, witnesses her siblings playing video games and knows how hard it is to get young children outside rather than sitting in front of a television all day
Bussum started her program by experimenting with her siblings and said they enjoyed the incentive aspect of the program with one of their games
so they get spark points or skill level points,” Bussum said
“The FitStart Kids points can be exchanged for spark points in the game so the character can get a new upgrade.”
FitStart Kids combines wearable tech and video games to incentivize activity with gaming currency. Learn more @statepress
The FitStart Kids portal will be web-based and will be the place to go to link one's Fitbit activity tracker in order to receive the game points
“The FitStart Kids portal will all be web-based initially as a website and then (we will) make it more mobile,” she said
“You can log on and there will be directions to set up your Fitbit and create a profile
you log onto your profile it will be updated through your Fitbit.”
Bussum will add a social component in the future to give the kids in the program a mentor or coach who helps them achieve their weight loss goals
“We are looking at making a social component also so kids will get a coach or mentor and be on a team that compete against other teams on things like step challenge on the platform,” Bussum said
Working with members of ASU staff and mentors from the medical world has helped legitimize FitStart Kids as a real way for children to lose weight while offering a new way of incentivizing to get the children motivated in the first place
director of the Startup Center within the Ira A
said the most difficult part coming up for Bussum and FitStart Kids will be getting validation that this program is a viable solution for children and their families to fight the weight loss battle
“It’s a great concept and she’s not alone,” he said
“The challenge Courtney is going to have is to go out and validate that business model that is repeatable and scalable
the hope is that she will garner enough data to prove this is a useful intervention and show the parents or kids who have benefited from the program.”
Elizabeth Yurth, a non-surgical musculoskeletal specialist from Colorado
has been helping Bussum give credibility to the FitStart Kids program
“I’ve been helping with consulting in what is realistic
like eating better and not just (drinking) soda
but to teach kids and get them interested in eating healthier and not just counting calories,” she said.
Yurth said the program benefits children
so I have a 10-year-old patient who is on the chubby side and we got him a Fitbit tracker and it’s amazing how much it has motivated him to hit 10,000 steps a day," she said
"He told me yesterday that he asked if he could walk to get ice cream to meet his steps cause he hadn’t quite reached it for the day yet.”
The benefit of having something tangible to show the kids that they are achieving something more than just weight loss plays a role in how the kids interact and get excited about the program
it is something they can look at and we know that those simple motivators in kids can go a long ways,” Yurth said
“It’s like a star chart when your kids are doing chores; it is something they can look at and get something out of it.”
For physicians across the country, Yurth said helping children lose weight is a never-ending battle and not having enough time with patients to help counsel them is a major reason it is so difficult to help the children who need it
"I have these patients come in and I know I need time to counsel them on how to get this kid to lose weight and I don’t have time," she said
"If I can just write out a prescription for this youngster to start the FitStart program and then they take it from there

the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services lists 9,761 Kentucky children in active foster placements
And although each foster care family receives a per diem rate for fostering
the cost of clothing for many of the children does not factor into the rate
Amanda Simmonds and Scarlett Goodman know this all too well
All of the women are either currently or have fostered children
and each knows the struggle with clothing foster children who often don’t have more than a backpack of clothing when they arrive at a foster home
when Van Bussum joined a Facebook group for foster parents
she met Sarah Gough who had started Borrowed Hearts Foundation
a clothing closet nonprofit for foster families in Evansville
that now has sister store locations in Terre Haute
Gough had been a foster parent for six years and had noticed that kids were often coming to her with the wrong sized clothing or inappropriate clothing
so she began trading clothes with other foster moms
Realizing the need for this service for other foster families
The services offered in Evansville include clothing
a meal program and a car seat lending program
Borrowed Hearts served over 1,700 foster children
“We connect families with resources,” Gough said
“And we continue to support foster families.”
When Gough met Van Bussum in the online group
the two discussed the need for a store like Borrowed Hearts in Owensboro
Gough knew the area needed it and Van Bussum had been talking to other foster moms about trading clothing
Simmonds said she was already doing something similar out of her garage with foster families
Van Bussum talked to Hurm and Goodman as well
Goodman was already friends with Gough and often went to Borrowed Hearts in Evansville to help with her foster children
Conversations began in August and as soon as they green-lighted the project with Gough
the first thing the group knew they needed was a location for Borrowed Hearts
whose husband works for Don Moore Automotive asked Don Moore if he knew of a place for the nonprofit and pretty quickly
Don Moore Automotive became the first corporate sponsor by donating their Second Street collision center as the building to house Borrowed Hearts
the families have been putting in many hours getting the building ready for its clients
Families along with volunteers from school service organizations and friends have been painting rooms and cleaning floors along with sorting donations
The four women said the community has been so supportive in helping to get Borrowed Hearts opened for foster families
They are currently looking for an attorney to help them become a separate Borrowed Hearts with a separate tax identification number so that when they apply for grants
they are not restricted because another Borrowed Hearts has applied for the same grant
In-kind donations are also needed for some minor renovations and cleaning up the building
we are in need of more corporate sponsors,” Hurm said
Having sponsors will allow the different rooms to open and serve local foster families
paint to get the rooms ready and new hygiene items for families as well as new socks and underwear
The community has generously begun donating clothing and volunteers are filling the existing racks to get ready for their early December opening
Although Owensboro’s Borrowed Hearts is not officially open
they can serve families now — and have been
“We love working together,” Hurm said of the relationship between the four women who have spent many hours getting Borrowed Hearts ready for the community
The partners hope to implement the same programs as the sister stores
but for now they are accepting gently-worn
New hygiene products and socks and underwear are also requested
They plan to cooperate with local organizations to partner with items they can’t use but others can and vice versa
“Having a co-op will help everyone,” Van Bussum said
Evansville’s Borrowed Hearts is open 180-200 hours a month
and the women said the Second Street location is of comparable size
“This will be a huge help for foster families,” Hurm said
“To have a clothes closet and hygiene bank.”
Van Bussum said that one of their primary reasons for opening the store is finding a way for the community to help
“Not all are called to foster but are called to help,” Van Bussum said
“This is a vehicle for them — it will allow people to help.”
Eligibility guidelines are listed on the Borrowed Hearts Owensboro Facebook page, which also includes the current needs.
For those interested in a financial donation, an in-kind donation, or volunteering individually or with a service organization, contact Borrowed Hearts Owensboro through their Facebook page as well.
Borrowed Hearts is located at 1705 W. 2nd St.

With erratic weather conditions viewed as the primary suspect behind the tragedy
Wallman had been called to the blaze specifically to prevent a repeat incident by keeping firefighters informed of changing weather conditions
The Yarnell Hill fire.Credit: Wikimedia Commons
As one of 85 specially trained incident meteorologists
Wallmann has knowledge of “microscale” weather forecasting
including anticipating highly localized and chaotic winds in the vicinity of individual thunderstorms
Wallmann also has expertise in firefighting operations
That combination makes him a critical asset to the incident command staff and the hundreds of firefighters that raced to the scene of the fire since the accident on June 30
Deployed to the front lines of volatile incidents ranging from wildfires to chemical and oil spills
IMETs are the National Weather Service’s equivalent of special forces
sent to the vanguard to provide on-site forecasting support
IMETs have even been sent abroad as they've assisted Australia in battling severe wildfires in recent years
After getting the order to deploy on the morning of July 1
it took Wallmann nearly 24 hours to reach the fire command center
and battling fatigue while driving from the Phoenix airport through sparsely populated areas in the midst of a record heat wave
Speaking to Climate Central on Tuesday afternoon amid the din of landing and departing helicopters at the Yarnell Hill fire command center
Wallmann said he is trying to give fire crews as much situational awareness as possible given the variable weather conditions in the region
with afternoon thunderstorms expected for much of the week
some of which may be capable of producing sudden wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph at times
we’re all aware of what went on two days ago,” Wallmann said
“As much as what happened is in the back of our minds
we’re just really focused on the task at hand.” As of Wednesday morning
the blaze was still only 8 percent contained
he can provide firefighters with a warning of incoming storms at least 45 minutes in advance
but that varies depending on where thunderstorms form
At a press conference in Maryland on Tuesday, acting National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) administrator Kathryn Sullivan said that an IMET could have made a decisive difference
“Had we have been there maybe we would have had a better outcome,” Sullivan said
A NOAA incident meteorologist at the scene of a wildfire.Credit: NOAA
But IMETs deploy from their usual assignments (as forecasters at local NWS offices) at the request of incident commanders
when the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew was overrun by the fire
the Yarnell Hill blaze was not classified as a “Type 1 Incident,” which automatically triggers IMETs to deploy
National Fire Weather Operations Coordinator for the National Weather Service in Boise
“They (incident commanders) ask for IMET support when they ask for it
and we don’t have any say as to what kinds of teams are put on an incident,” Van Bussum said
Randy Eardely, a spokesman for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise
said IMETs are “almost never requested” for small-range fires like the Yarnell Hill fire was prior to its dramatic expansion on June 30
when the blaze more than quadrupled in size due to perilous weather conditions — a combustible mix of triple-digit heat
a large amount of dry vegetation in the path of the fire
Van Bussum said the request for an IMET came in at 7:30 a.m
thereby necessitating many more firefighting resources than had been allocated the previous day
the NWS did provide localized weather forecast information for the Yarnell Hill fire despite the lack of an IMET
with two “spot forecasts” requested by incident commanders and issued by the NWS office in Flagstaff
phone calls from the NWS office to commanders warned of approaching thunderstorms
Wallman said the spot forecasts and phone calls meant that firefighters had advanced notice that thunderstorms with gusty and variable winds were likely on Sunday afternoon
The lack of an IMET at the command post on Sunday
“doesn’t mean that there was nobody looking out for them.”
When they deploy to the scene of an incident
IMETs carry several tools of the trade to allow them to tap into streams of weather data
“We are equipped to basically be a weather office, but a mobile weather office,” said Lisa Kriederman, an IMET and forecaster at the NWS' Denver forecast office. Kriederman, who deployed to the devastating Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs last year
and has already been dispatched to three wildfires this season
said the standard instrument package most often consists of a laptop with a weather forecasting program installed on it
along with a portable modem and satellite connection
and an instrument to launch and track weather balloons to gain insight into weather conditions aloft
A NOAA incident meteorologist setting up equipment at a wildfire incident command post.Credit: NOAA
IMETs also carry instruments on their belts to allow them to do “spot checks” of temperature
1 goal is the safety of those firefighters,” Kriederman said
“We are there to be that dedicated watchful eye
to watch for the safety of everyone involved in the incident.”
She said that as part of the firefighting community
“It was a terrible tragedy and it really struck me because that is my
purpose at an incident; (we’re there) for the safety of firefighters.”
Firefighters battling active wildfires around the country will take a brief pause Wednesday to honor the fallen at Yarnell Hill
Although the NWS is facing budget constraints due to the sequester
with a hiring freeze in place agency-wide that has left many forecast offices short-staffed
Van Bussum and others interviewed for this article said the NWS continues to meet every IMET deployment request
we have never once turned down a request,” Van Bussum said
That continues to be the case even though IMET deployments can put short-staffed offices under more strain than usual

Amanda Van Bussum was determined to be a perfect match for her husband Travis, and both will undergo surgery Tuesday. | Photo courtesy of Travis and Amanda Van Bussum
On Dec. 14, 2018, the Van Bussums introduced the Facebook community to their newest challenge — Travis’s need of a kidney.
The post explained that, as a child, doctors found a tumor on one of Travis’ kidneys and that kidney was removed. He also underwent aggressive chemotherapy for six months.
“For most of his life, Travis was in remission, just a normal little boy, normal teen guy, normal young man…normal,” wrote Amanda.
Shortly after Travis and Amanda began dating in 2012, Travis told her about his history with cancer and some heart issues he had been experiencing.
“When I first heard this, I didn’t realize to what extent it would end up impacting our future together — but not in a negative way at all,” Amanda said.
Within the year, Travis’ nephrologist determined his heart issues to be a result of his remaining kidney and that over time he would experience kidney failure and need a transplant.
Hoping to preserve the kidney’s function, which was 30-40 percent at the time, Amanda became diligent about preparing renal-friendly meals for him.
“Being young and in love, I remember thinking that, when the time came, I’d try to give him my kidney,” Amanda said.
“In May of 2017 we signed the papers, officially adopting the children that we’d loved with our entire hearts for two years and eight months — over 900 days,” Amanda said. “We thought life would calm down now — that we’d be ‘normal.'”
Eighteen months later, Travis’ nephrologist said his kidney function was less than 20 percent and referred him to Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Prior to Travis’ first appointment, he caught a stomach virus and ended up in the hospital, and it was then Amanda realized that his body could not fight much longer. She credits his medical team at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in getting him healthy enough to travel to his Louisville appointment.
After being educated about kidney transplantation in Louisville, Amanda asked to be on the donor list. She was told by the living donor coordinator that, because the cost of testing is so high, only one person would be tested at a time until they found a match.
“Since becoming a mother, I’d gone back and forth between attempting to donate and not,” Amanda said. “I didn’t want to neglect our children, but I wanted to do all I possibly could for my husband.”
After putting their story on Facebook in December, Amanda said over 30 people reached out willing to be tested.
“The most touching were Travis’ past and current students at Apollo who wanted to help in this selfless manner, saying it’s ‘the least they could do,’” Amanda said about their “beloved Owensboro community.”
In the beginning of January, Amanda received a call from Jewish Hospital informing her she could be tested. Although she was equally scared and excited, she believed that, if she was meant to donate, she would be a match and “trust that God would provide.”
“If I wasn’t a match then I figured my role would be to be Travis’ champion and caregiver through this,” Amanda said.
Amanda overnighted her living donor kit to Louisville to discover that blood and tissue from the kit were a match. So Amanda traveled to Louisville for the necessary testing and to meet with a social worker to determine if she was healthy enough to withstand surgery and could live with one kidney.
By the end of January, she was confirmed to be a complete match — something that she said still leaves her speechless.
“And God has provided. Our community is simply astounding,” Amanda said. “I work at Owensboro Catholic Middle School, and the Owensboro Catholic School System and families have responded in a big way. The awesome Eagle family at Apollo has been equally generous. Our church has been just phenomenal. Our children have been cared for. We’ve had a meal delivered to our door every night for nearly a month. We have been flooded with gift cards and well wishes.”
Amanda said this has not been nearly as scary as they initially thought because of the love and support that has surrounded them.
“I am so grateful that God created me in a way that allows me to give this gift to my husband. And I’m so grateful to live in this sweet town that has made sure all our needs have been provided for and that has truly covered us in prayer,” Amanda said. “ We are forever blessed and grateful.”
The Van Bussums will be in surgery on Tuesday and will remain in the hospital until Friday when they can return home. Then they will both be off of work for at least four weeks.
“I’m eager to get past this so that we can start paying it back and paying it forward,” Amanda said. “Because God and this community have been so good to us.”

Seven-month-old Noah Van Bussum beamed as he looked at the pictures in the book that volunteer Suzanne Egeln was reading to the Just For Babies story time group Tuesday morning at the Ponte Vedra Beach branch library
helped him click wooden sticks together to the beat of the Mother Goose poem
and smiled as they shook plastic bead-filled eggs to the beat of the song Itsy Bitsy Spider
sitting crosslegged on the floor with her son
But I don't think he really understands them yet."
but that Just For Babies also offers additional valuable exposure to the world of books
Just For Babies is offered every Tuesday at 10:15 a.m
Youth services librarian Anne Crawford leads many of the Just For Babies and Family Story Times
but said she couldn't offer it every week during the summer without the help of Egeln and another volunteer
Egeln is chairman of the board of Bird Island Park
located behind the library at 101 Library Blvd
she volunteered to help lead some story times so they could be offered weekly
and a self described "very retired" preschool teacher
Crawford is busy with planning and other duties
so she said she appreciates the help of Egeln and Hilliker
They also help during the rest of the year
"We have a close relationship with Bird Island Park
and Suzanne and Gail go full out," Crawford said
"I'm a big believer in early literacy," Egeln said
"we are fortunate here because the mommies know that."
and modeled their sessions on hers to include picture books
Egeln started Tuesday's session by singing a song welcoming each baby by name
The number of participants varies each week
and that day she had an intimate group of four mommies and their children
Then Egeln read them a book about "yes" things and "no" things
read a book about quiet things and loud things
when they shook their sillies out to a song by that name
And then launched into a bit of free playtime at the end

A 66-year-old driving instructor from Amersfoort was killed in a collision between his car and a train in Bussum on Tuesday
managed to get out of the car and off the tracks just in time
None of the 140 passengers in the train were injured
Another train took them to their destination
The cause of the accident is still unclear
the rail crossing is equipped with lights and booms
A video of the accident shows that the girl got out of the car and off the tracks just seconds before the train hit
The accident happened just a few meters away from the girl
The accident disrupted train traffic around Bussum for a large part of the day
The train tracks did not sustain much damage
this crossing is not known to be dangerous
This was the first accident on the crossing since 1999
Why the driving instructor did not also get out of the car when his student did
everyone can basically react in three primitive ways: flight
traffic psychologist Gerard Tertoolen said to AD
and the third must have happened to the man

(The latter.) I often work from my office at home
but sometimes you need to get out of the house
Maybe you need some human interaction… or even just a good coffee
We’re in the Netherlands but I’m talking beverages here!
Freelancers need a good cafe where they can hang out and work… somewhere with strong wifi and equally strong coffee…
I’ve visited A LOT of cafes in Hilversum over my 4 years of working from home
so let me share my favourite spots with you:
If you follow me on Instagram
Food halls are fantastic concepts in general but here it’s done really well
Drinks are ordered at your table by waiting staff
and food is ordered at each individual food stall using your table number
A lot of food halls require queuing and waiting for your food
but here they will bring it to your table as soon as it’s ready
My personal tip: the sweet potato fries with Parmesan and basil mayo are THE ONE!
and the place is massive so there’s loads of seating to choose from
Mouthilversum.nl | Naarderstraat 8
so it depends what kind of work you’re doing
I can’t go here when I’m working on spreadsheets!
the wifi works and it’s split on 3 levels so you’ll almost always find a place to sit
The best thing on the menu is without a doubt the Paddo burger (mushroom burger)
They have gluten free and low gluten bagels and there are lactose free options too
Bagelsbeans.nl | Kerkstraat 3
This is a cute little place slightly out of the centre
because generally it means it’s quieter than the other places I’ve mentioned so far
The wifi is good and the interior is really cool – industrial meets homely
Bag yourself a seat on the turquoise sofa if you can!
There’s also plenty of outside seating but unfortunately not much view to speak of
They have gluten and lactose free options and a page of specials
The banana bread (gluten/lactose/sugar free) comes highly recommended
Presto Facebook page (no website) | Herenstraat 20
I think everyone in Hilversum knows this place… hence it’s always packed
But you can usually find a table as there’s loads of seating inside (2 levels) and out
There’s also a section / play area for kids upstairs… but this post is about remote working
If you’ve built up an appetite whilst working they do an excellent Buddha bowl and the chicken thighs with spelt bread is also really good
but if you can’t be bothered to walk downstairs to order they have these little notes where you can write your order and then put it inside a ball and drop it down a drainpipe-esque chute
Yourcoffeehilversum.nl | Kerkstraat 38A
I went here this week and had a Bountyccino!
There’s a terrace outside and plenty of space to sit inside
It’s actually quite deceptive just how large it is inside
so I doubt you’ll ever struggle to find space
Doppioespresso.nl | ‘s-Gravelandseweg 14
those 5 are all in Hilversum but if you fancy going a bit further afield I can also suggest the following:
This place has also featured on my Instagram account a fair few times recently
To be honest I haven’t worked here yet – but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t
in the middle of the Hei (heathland) hence the name… and it’s just a lovely
but the charcuterie platter (pictured above) is pretty good
In terms of borrelhapjes (for once you’ve finished working
as it’s open til 8pm): the garnalenkroketjes are good (8/10)
bitterballen are ok (7/10) but unfortunately the groentekroketjes are decidedly average (5/10)
Heidezicht.nl | Randweg 203
It’s *technically* located in Laren but from Hilversum it’s a nice walk or cycle through the Hei to get to it
Good wifi and menu – the borrelplanken are very good – especially the cheese one
Service can be a bit hit and miss… but hey
Bluk.nl | Zuiderheide 2
This place is also located a bit out-of-the-way in ‘s-Graveland
But it’s well worth the drive or cycle as you’re surrounded by nature
I wouldn’t recommend walking from Hilversum because it’s too far
It’s situated right next to the visitor centre for the Natuurmonumenten – “Nature Monuments’ (jeez, how do you translate that?!) Here it is in Dutch anyhoo: Bezoekerscentrum Gooi en Vechtstreek – Natuurmonumenten)
(Tip: avoid Wednesday afternoons as many kids are off school then and it does get rammed!) The kaasstengels are excellent and they also do gluten/lactose/sugar free banana bread

Quality and potential Drommel made his debut in the Eredivisie for FC Twente six seasons ago and has since played more than 100 games in the first of the club from Enschede
he was a base player for the team that became champions in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie and then grew to become FC Twente's undisputed number one and (reserve) captain in the Eredivisie
already has an awful lot of experience at the highest level," De Jong said
"He is one of the most promising goalkeepers in the Netherlands and the Eredivisie
We are convinced of his qualities and potential."
PSV is responding to changes in the club's goalkeeping staff
"With the upcoming departure of Lars Unnerstall and the possibility of Yvon Mvogo returning to RB Leipzig in the back of our minds
we wanted to make sure we had a reliable goalkeeper at the start of the season who has the qualities to play for PSV," De Jong continued
"That has been achieved with the recruitment of Joël
with Maxime Delanghe and Vincent Müller we have two talented goalkeepers who have grown this season through training with the A-selection and match minutes with Young PSV."
Sense of PSV Drommel was medically examined by PSV this week and then received at Philips Stadium
PSV and FC Twente earlier reached an agreement on a transfer fee for the goalkeeper
I set my sights on a transfer to PSV," Drommel said
"The club and Roger Schmidt have a lot of confidence in my qualities
competing for prizes and playing European football every year
I want to finish the season well and look forward enormously to joining PSV afterwards and getting to know the player group and other staff members."
Brunch in Amsterdam: 11 best breakfast places in the cityBookmarkBookmarkBy Victoria SévenoUpdated on Jul 26, 2024Savoury or sweet, healthy granola or a greasy fry-up - regardless of what you like, brunch certainly has something for everyone and every occasion. If you’re visiting Amsterdam and are looking for the best spots to hit up for breakfast
or are on the hunt for where to host your next bottomless brunch with friends
there’s plenty of choice in the Dutch capital
Kicking things off with a classic, The Breakfast Club has locations dotted all over Amsterdam (and Bussum!):
The fact that there are numerous locations means it’s easily accessible by foot, bike and public transport
and - as the name suggests - The Breakfast Club specialises in any and all kinds of breakfast and brunch dishes; think everything from syrupy pancake stacks and chicken and waffles
to English breakfasts and huevos rancheros
A post shared by THE BREAKFAST CLUB AMSTERDAM (@thebreakfastclubnld)
Coffee & Coconuts serves breakfast from 8am right through till closing time
A post shared by Coffee & Coconuts (@coffeecoconuts)
“Cheap” and “Amsterdam” are not two words that you’ll hear together very often, but there are a couple of spots worth heading to if you’re after a quick and cheap bite to eat before starting your day. You could head to somewhere like Hema or IKEA if you’re after a real bargain, but if you’re looking for a more aesthetic dining experience, be sure to check out Sango Amsterdam
a cute little cafe selling speciality coffees
Greenwoods is another extremely popular brunch spot in Amsterdam, and both locations in the Netherlands (which can be found on the Singel and Keizersgracht) generally have queues for tables
and serve plenty of different breakfast dishes all day including - of course - the classic English breakfast
A post shared by Greenwoods (@greenwoods.amsterdam)
Waffles might not be one of the first breakfast dishes you think of, but it’s hard to deny that the traditionally American dish has become increasingly popular around the world in recent years. In Amsterdam, you might be surprised to hear that there are a couple of different restaurants that serve waffles, but Miss G’s - with their locations in De Pijp and a boat(!) in the city centre - have the widest variety of waffle dishes
A post shared by Miss G’s (@missgs_nl)
Americans are pretty good at breakfasts, and because of the variety of dishes that are traditionally eaten for breakfast (or brunch) in the US, it’s likely that everyone has a different idea of what a good American breakfast looks like. Staring at Jacob - an American-inspired brunch bar - does a pretty good job of capturing what you expect from an American breakfast - plus cocktails
If you’re a traditionalist at heart and believe that the best breakfasts must include eggs, then Omelegg - as the name suggests - is the place for you
If you’re tired of always having the same old omelette
feel free to be a little more adventurous and try the Viking Fisherman (smoked salmon
cheese) or the Banana Peanutbutter (banana
A post shared by Omelegg (@omelegg)
Those who like to experiment a little more when it comes to food would probably feel pretty comfortable having brunch at Little Collins
so you can’t ever know exactly what to expect
but generally the dishes are full of flavour
and ingredients you’d never think to combine
While a couple of spots on this list also offer bottomless brunch (we're looking at you, Staring at Jacob and Miss G's), De Bar has got to be the bottomless brunch spot in Amsterdam - especially for those who like a bargain
De Bar gives you three hours of bottomless mimosas for 20 euros per person
which comes with pretty much everything you could want from a brunch dish (including scrambled eggs
A post shared by No Man’s Art Gallery & de bar (@debar.nomansart)
PLUK is a great place for those who like bright and airy breakfast spots
and with two locations right in the heart of the Negen Straatjes in the city centre
they’re also primely located for those looking for a healthy bite before going off to explore the canals
Alongside cute shops selling a wealth of goods
Picking just one Amsterdam brunch spot out of all the ones on offer in the city is no easy feat, but the most popular among locals and tourists alike has got to be Bakers & Roasters - and all those people can’t be wrong
If you’re heading here for some food be prepared to wait for a table
as there’s almost always a queue up the street at both their Amsterdam locations
get ready to enjoy plenty of delicious food
A post shared by Bakers & Roasters (@bakersandroasters)
the creme de la creme of Amsterdam breakfast spots
Now all that’s left to do is to make sure all those conversations about bottomless mimosas and eggs benedict make it out of the group chat
Have we left your favourite brunch spot off the list
