independently specialising in data-driven cultivation optimisation for greenhouse horticulture
officially opened its new office in Utrecht on February 2nd
This expansion marks an important milestone for the rapidly growing company
as it aims to make its innovative services even more accessible to customers across the Netherlands
the central location offers the opportunity to attract new talent
The Utrecht office opening comes just 10 months after Ledgnd’s headquarters moved from the Dutch city of Capelle aan den IJssel to a larger space in Vlaardingen
This underscores the strong growth the company has experienced in recent years
The platform enables growers to integrate data from climate computers
and plant feedback systems into a single overview
both illuminated and non-illuminated growers are increasingly utilising the insights provided by MyLedgnd to increase yields
“The opening of our Utrecht office marks another significant milestone,” says Ramon van de Vrie
but also a centrally located base that brings us closer to our customers in the northern part of the country
It also presents an opportunity to attract talented employees who want to contribute to a sustainable future for greenhouse horticulture.”
Van de Vrie explains that the decision to open an office in Utrecht aligns with the company’s growth ambitions and its commitment to supporting the sector with innovative solutions
“We see that our clients and employees are spread across the country
A second location in the heart of the Netherlands enables us to respond more quickly and establish new collaborations.”
With the formal opening of the Utrecht office
Ledgnd is taking another step toward sustainable
“This move shows that we are on the right track,” says Van de Vrie
“But the most important thing is that we can serve our customers better while remaining an attractive employer for talent in greenhouse horticulture
We are always looking for people who want to contribute to innovation and sustainability.”
A delivery van hit an 81-year-old woman and 80-year-old man walking in Capelle aan den IJssel on Wednesday evening
the elderly couple was walking on Ketsendijk when they got hit by the car
First responders tried to resuscitate them
Rijnmond reported that the couple was walking their regular route home after attending a club night at the Westerkerk
They were crossing the street when the delivery van hit them
The man ended up quite a bit further on the road
and the woman landed at the bottom of the dike that runs along the road
The couple was from Capelle aan den IJssel
The vehicle involved was an electric delivery van for a restaurant
The police told Rijnmond that the young man was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs
The driver is still in custody for questioning
The police are still investigating how the accident happened and it is not yet known whether the young man is suspected of any criminal offenses
Complaints about excessive artificial lighting are on the rise in the Rotterdam region, prompting environmental inspectors to conduct late-night investigations
recorded a sharp increase in reports of light pollution
Most complaints involve bright advertising lights and sports field floodlights
Environmental inspectors rely on standards from the Nederlandse Stichting voor Verlichtingskunde (NSVV) to determine whether light sources exceed acceptable levels
excessive artificial lighting can disrupt sleep and have harmful effects on wildlife
including disorienting birds and affecting their migration patterns
inspectors specializing in light pollution at DCMR
spend their nights measuring light intensity at various locations
During a recent visit to Capelle aan den IJssel
they investigated complaints about a football field’s floodlights
“The lights were on just a moment ago,” Knops said
scanning the area from a resident’s balcony
Security lights at sports facilities often turn off automatically
Van der Zwaal explained that LED technology has contributed to the problem
“Any business can now install a bright LED billboard with moving images,” he said
business owners voluntarily dim lights when approached by inspectors
“One restaurant owner lowered the brightness on the spot using an app,” Knops recalled
A car dealership on Goeree-Overflakkee refused to adjust its showroom lighting despite complaints
DCMR ultimately imposed fines of 2,500 euros per violation
the inspectors measured light pollution inside a resident’s apartment
were bright enough to cast shadows on the bedroom walls
Using a specialized device called a lux meter
the inspectors recorded the intensity of the light
After an hour of testing in different rooms
they determined that the brightness exceeded permissible levels
The football club was asked to adjust the lights
either by reducing intensity or repositioning the fixtures
Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam gained full independence
the company has taken strategic steps to chart its own course and strengthen its independent position within the maritime sector
After the closure of the Vuyk shipyard in Capelle aan den IJssel in 1979
marking the end of all shipbuilding activities
former employees established a new company: Vuyk Engineering and Trading
Founded on the principles of technical know-how combined with experience in cost calculation
they gained a reputation as an expert market player
able to provide a wide range of services in vessel design and marine engineering
"Once it became clear that Vuyk would be sold
we defined how we envisioned Vuyk's future," says Floris Toetenel
"The objective was to be independent and not being affiliated with any specific shipyard
We aimed to step out of a corporate environment and return to our core: designing and engineering to meet our clients' requirements
and we shouldn’t lose sight of that.”
agreement was reached on a takeover by Royal Doeksen
The Rotterdam-based maritime investment company stepped in as major shareholder
allowing Vuyk to continue operating under its own management and as an independent engineering office
“This strategic decision was made to ensure and strengthen autonomy."
Three different specialisations - vessel design
equipment design and operational engineering - work together under one roof
"We are the last remaining independent maritime engineering office in the Netherlands and are also the only maritime engineering firm to represent three specialisations
This means we not only possess in-depth knowledge and experience in each of these disciplines
but we also have the ability to seamlessly integrate our three specialisations within one project."
"By continuously investing in knowledge development of new technologies
we remain at the forefront of innovation," said Erwin Put
noting Vuyk's commitment to new technologies
"We are not only involved in improving existing solutions but also strive to develop knowledge of new solutions that respond to market needs."
In-house knowledge of topics such as methanol
hydrogen and even nuclear power demonstrate the dedication to exploring sources beyond traditional methods
sharing our knowledge and thus promoting an open dialogue
we want to contribute to the development of the entire maritime industry."
Vuyk's engineering team has laid a solid foundation for further development
Nearly the entire staff was retained after the acquisition in 2021
“Our people are the backbone of Vuyk,” says Put
two employees celebrated their 25th and even 40 years of employment
Senior employees are the best tutors for younger colleagues by sharing their expertise and career lessons with the younger generations
This only benefits the professional development of young talent in the organisation and thus the future of Vuyk
"We consider it important that our engineering team is composed of different perspectives and backgrounds
in order to strengthen our innovative power and creativity
our focus is not only on attracting talent
"We strive for a working environment where employees feel valued and can develop
which is essential for achieving our long-term goals."
The renewed independence also brought challenges
Toetenel acknowledges that this is an ongoing process of improved visibility and full transparency: "In an industry where partnerships and affiliations are often the norm
we have to be clear that we are completely autonomous from external parties and that we operate on the basis of client's wishes," he explains
"The bottom line is that we can work with anyone the customer considers important."
Toetenel continues: "A proactive approach to the market and transparent working methods have allowed us to strengthen our commercial activities
both in the Netherlands and internationally
Our independence brought us back to the table with major contractors
and we have also carried out several dredging and offshore wind projects in the United States in the past three years
We have also been heading further into Europe
OEMs and suppliers within the offshore wind industry."
A look into the future reveals ambitious plans: "With a vision to strengthen our global presence
we are in the advanced stages of opening new subsidiaries in a couple of strategic locations
This expansion will allow us to offer our services to a wider range of international clients and to serve their local needs
Official announcements are scheduled at the beginning of the second quarter.”
emphasizing plans to reinforce core values of knowledge
most importantly: continuing to listen closely to our customers and partners."

Netherlands [Advent Magazine with tedNEWS]
In the fourth quarter 2022 edition of the Netherlands Union Conference magazine ‘Advent‘
profiled is long-standing member Freida Southuwat-Tomasoa
indigenous to the Maluku Islands (also called the Moluccas)
“Sugar!” That’s what Frieda Souhuwat-Tomasoa thought when she drove back from Assen to her hometown of Capelle aan den IJssel
Observing a huge number of military vehicles heading north
Frieda was determined to come up with a plan to end the train hijacking at De Punt
was tired of waiting and had decided to end it by force
More on her dramatic role as a mediator in a crisis situation later
but first we need to go back a little further in time
The book “A Forgotten History” by Coen Verbraak
contains fourteen interviews with leading leaders from the Moluccan movement
At the kitchen table in her home in Capelle aan den IJssel
she talks about her long commitment to the Moluccan cause.¹
After the declaration of Indonesian independence in 1949
It was quite a transition for the Tomasoa family
From a spacious house (‘we had a privileged position’) to a small room (six metres by three) in the former Vught concentration camp
Frieda hardly realised where she had ended up
at the premiere of Coen Verbraak’s interview series in Hilversum
because I thought: that’s how my parents lived there.”
It was in 1951 that Frieda arrived in the Netherlands with her parents and three brothers
Frieda’s father had played a prominent role in the Dutch colonial army (KNIL) and was in the resistance during the Japanese occupation
Het narrowly escaped being beheaded by a Japanese native
Frieda’s grandparents had converted to the Adventist faith in the Moluccas
That also played a particularly important role for her parents and Frieda herself
“It was a very difficult time for the family
I’m sure faith kept my parents going.” Her mother made sure that Frieda didn’t go to the domestic science school as was usual for girls at the time
Her motto was: we are now in the Netherlands
Me and my father would pray that God would guide us through this
The stay of Moluccans in the Netherlands was meant to be temporary
But with an increasing pressure from the Moluccan community on successive Dutch governments to make a stronger effort for the independence of the Moluccas
it was natural for Frieda to support the establishment of the RMS and so became active within the Moluccan movement
She was later become one of the most important Moluccan leaders
she regretted the radicalization of Moluccan youth in the 1970s
I have volunteered for the Organization of Unrepresented Nations.² Over the years you go through a development
My parents taught me not to return evil for evil
You can change militancy by engaging in dialogue and I’ve seen much more achieved with that
In my role I was sent to countries at war and was a member of the peacemaker teams in Taiwan
You can come to a solution with dialogue.”
Frieda played the same role between 1975 and 1977 when a train was hijacked twice by Moluccan youths in the Netherlands
As the youngest member of the mediation team with the Dutch government
“Prime Minister Den Uyl gave us another chance to convince the young people to lay down their arms
We thought the mothers would be able to convince the youngsters to stop the hijacking
because Minister Van Agt ordered military intervention
The military had orders to shoot the hijackers.”
The violent end of the train hijacking caused anger and sadness in the Moluccan community
Manusama managed to calm down the community.” Frieda further explained
“He also made it clear that the Moluccan community must live according to the laws and standards of this country
He was a strong leader.” Frieda also thinks that eventually the Moluccan youth realized that actions had no effect and that dialogue works better
Conversation with Netherlands Prime Minister Rutte
Fast forward to 2022 and Frieda shares that talks are now underway with the Dutch government about strengthening their relationship with the Moluccan community
Frieda has been invited to enter into a dialogue with Prime Minister Mark Rutte
“That has never happened in the 72 years that we as a Moluccan community have been here in the Netherlands”
“I told him that it is time for a gesture towards the Moluccan community
and the penny seems to have dropped.”
‘Masohi: Sharing and Doing Together.’
Frieda lives with her husband in the Moluccan neighbourhood in Capelle aan den IJssel and would not want to live anywhere else
“It’s our culture – where we share things together
The community is here for us where everyone helps each other
We call that masohi: sharing and doing together.” And Frieda is quick to point out that it is completely in line with her Adventist faith
by the way you help people in the form as written in the Bible – serving involves not putting yourself first
In that way you are able to command respect.” As an elder at the Adventist congregation of the Rotterdam North church
Frieda also serves on the executive bodies of both the Trans-European Division and the General Conference
there are projects in more than 200 countries to help people
then I am just very proud to be a member of this church”
Frieda is also involved in a new and innovative relationship with the Indonesian embassy
Invited by the new ambassador to get acquainted
“He told me to get rid of the enmity and that we should help each other
the ambassador wants to mean something to the people of the Moluccas – which is a poor nation
the desire for independence by the Moluccans is becoming ever stronger.”
The natural question to ask Frieda has to be; what will the situation be like between the Netherlands and the Moluccas in ten years’ time
but also for the Moluccans in the Netherlands
then we can also see bright spots in the Moluccas
Atjeh in the north of Sumatra now has a form of autonomy
and Frieda hopes that this is also reserved for the Moluccas
“Each island ultimately wants its own people to rule
Perhaps the old idea of a federated state will come back on the table.”
Frieda supports many social projects on the Moluccas and encourages Dutch companies to invest on the island
and I also believe in the power of prayer”
“God will help you because I have experienced that many times in my life.”

A series of US-led sanctions on Iranian oil over the past decade have forced Iran’s government to resort to a network of tankers
often referred to as a shadow or ghost fleet - which consists of hundreds of vessels controlled by Iranian interests via intermediaries - to evade restrictions
The Dutch law firm helped selling Iran's crude through a Surinamese subsidiary based in Capelle aan den IJssel
Last month, the US Treasury Department sanctioned several entities for their alleged involvement in shipments of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products for US-designated entities National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) or Triliance Petrochemical Company
Three of the sanctioned companies were registered at ILFT's Suriname address
told BNR that he is merely a service provider offering a solution for a client that faces a legal issue at an international level
Taheri noted that trading Iranian oil is not prohibited in Europe or the South American country of Suriname
emphasizing that his firm and its subsidiary are operating within the law
he declined to disclose the identity of the tanker fleet's owner
although the website of his firm features the logo of the NIOC under the heading 'Important Clients'
head of the Iran Tanker Tracking Program at United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI)
described the ships registered through ILFT as among the most important carriers of Iranian oil
UANI estimates that these six tankers alone have exported 160 million barrels of oil valued at about $10 billion at current market prices since US sanctions took effect
Iran exported more than $70 billion worth of oil after the 2015 nuclear deal
according to the data released by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
This fell to less than $10 billion in 2020
following a unilateral US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and then-President Donald Trump’s so-called maximum pressure campaign
The figure rose again to just above $40 billion in 2023
in large part due to a myriad of smaller Chinese refineries purchasing Iranian oil masked as originating from other countries

The month of June capped off a record-breaking first-half performance in terms of cargo tonne-kilometres
Photo: Maarten Visser from Capelle aan den IJssel
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported a significant surge in global air cargo demand for June 2024
The data in IATA’s latest update reveals that June saw a 14.1% increase in demand in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs) compared to the same month last year
This marks the seventh consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year growth
The substantial increase in demand also contributed to a robust first half of the year for the air cargo industry
highlighted the driving forces behind this growth
citing maritime shipping constraints and a booming e-commerce sector:
Strong growth across all regions and major trade lanes combined for a record-breaking first-half performance in terms of CTKs
Maritime shipping constraints and a booming e-commerce sector are among the strongest growth drivers
the sector has remained largely impervious to ongoing political and economic challenges
and the US customs crackdown on e-commerce deliveries from China
Air cargo looks to be on solid ground to continue its strong performance into the second half of 2024,” said Walsh
Available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs) rose by 8.8% compared to June 2023
The increase was even more pronounced in international operations
This growth in capacity has helped to accommodate the surging demand
When breaking down the performance by region
Asia Pacific led with a 17.0% year-on-year increase in CTKs
Each region also saw varying increases in ACTKs and cargo load factors (CLF)
indicating a widespread uptick in air cargo activity across the globe
several economic factors played a role in shaping the air cargo market in June 2024
as indicated by the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI)
while new export orders PMI registered a slight contraction at 49.3
global cross-border trade showed a modest 0.1% month-on-month expansion in May
and industrial production remained steady compared to the previous month
The EU and Japan saw relatively constant inflation rates at 2.6% and 2.8% respectively
China’s inflation rate hovered near zero amid weak domestic demand
and a persistent real estate crisis since 2023

one instantly feels relaxed and completely at ease
the pale hues and the various tactile elements
Sharita says without hesitation: “Lots of white
I love natural materials and have an extra fondness for the warm and cuddly ones
This has actually been my preference for as long as I can remember
With the huge popularity of Scandinavian interiors it has become very trendy
which feels a bit funny since it has always been my personal style.”
The latter has served her well though: what started out as a little pastime of sharing interior shots on Instagram is evolving into an actual job as a stylist. As more and more people follow Sharita’s Instagram account
One memorable project was helping a family who moved to Dubai
“Due to the long-distance nature of the job
But everyone was super happy with the result,” says Sharita with a big smile
With a light-colored home and four children
the burning question is undoubtedly: How do they keep it so clean?
“Do you know I get that question at least once a week?” Sharita grins
There are some basic rules like ‘please eat at the dining table’
The sofa has been treated against stains and we chose good quality rugs
so if someone does spill it’s a breeze to remove the spot
Last but not least: We take off our shoes when entering the home
I find it interesting how white has a bad rap in terms of maintenance
while black doesn’t have that reputation but in reality is worse to upkeep
on a black surface you will see dust constantly unless you wipe it off every day!” The family is very comfy in their welcoming home
but is there anything Shai and Sharita would change
They’d really like a more open kitchen that would feel like an extension of the living area
Although they would also still like to be able to close the kitchen when desired
“Glass doors within a black steel frame would be ideal,” says Sharita
“that way we’d still maintain the sense of space while being able to shut off food odors etc
Favorite Element: Definitely my workspace
I love working at my computer here or flipping through an interior magazine
This was a deliberate decision: I would be secluded
but at the same time I would also share the space with the kids while they enjoy crafting at the dinner table or watching a movie on the sofa
so I found it challenging to make it cozy as well as functional
By painting the walls white and hanging a large round mirror the entry feels a lot more spacious
I used natural materials like a wooden coat rack and a narrow wooden bench; it adds warmth to any space
it’s important to not fill the room with jackets and shoes
A few nice plants are the finishing touch to make the entry look homey
What Friends Say: Everyone who visits says it’s a pretty
I often hear them say words like “peace” and “Zen”; which is great
because that’s exactly what I want our home to radiate
Biggest Embarrassment: None that I can think of
I don’t even have bad buys since I always give a purchase much thought to determine if I truly want it
Of course I see many things that are pretty
I like to mix sleek design with soft and tactile materials
My absolute fave are products that are exclusively handmade; I find these so so beautiful
Proudest DIY: My favorite DIY has to be my felt memo board
Very simple and yet so indispensable for my workspace
But it turned out I’m not nuts about cork and it would also define and darken the space
I was actually looking for something pretty and functional
Then the idea hit me to stick felt to the wall
It’s a special kind of felt: 8 millimeters thick (0.31 inch)
very natural and exactly what I was looking for
I cut out the right size and stuck it to the wall with a special glue
very simple but really good-looking and functional
It’s perfect for hanging all my lovely things
That’s what’s so great about a felt wall: You can keep on pinning and removing stuff without ruining the wall
Biggest Indulgence: My pink armchair from HAY
There’s a pink HAY cushion in the entry and I very much love the fabric’s delicate color
So I went to the HAY store and asked if this particular fabric could be used to upholster one of their chairs
And that was actually possible: I could pick the chair model
So it felt like this chair was made especially for me
Best Advice: Don’t let the trends lead your decisions
since home decor styles keep on shifting and for most people it’s impossible to change their interior every year
you can change some accessories or transform a wall with paint or wallpaper
This will already have quite some impact on the overall look
You’ll see: a different vase here and a new cushion there will give your home a new feel
That way your home will be updated without costing a lot
Last but not least: always stay true to yourself
it’s the base for creating a warm and cozy home

High-Risk Citizens A software is used for detecting potential benefit cheats in the Netherlands
The government keeps quiet about how that works
Civil rights activists are taking the matter to court
Capelle aan den Ijssel is a Dutch town on the edge of Rotterdam
If one took the town administration's word for it
you’d better stay away from the municipality of 66,000 residents
the place suffers from an "erosion of values and norms" in "multi-problem families" who are "mainly occupied with surviving on a day-to-day basis"
A disproportionally large share of council housing and fading social cohesion
paired with work migrants who only stay temporarily and often do not report their residence
lead to moonlighting in illegal garage workshops
many people outside the Netherlands have quite a different picture of the country
the Netherlands were famous for their welfare state
When things were going well for the small country
it was possible to live carefree off social and unemployment benefits
the Dutch government's all-round care system has been scaled back and replaced by appeals to self-responsibility
the Dutch authorities are using far-reaching technical facilities to identify citizens who may be cheating the state by cashing in on wrongfully collected housing
The magic word is SyRI: System Risk Indication
Citizen data stored by various authorities and state institutions are combined and analysed
tax data can be compared with information on who receives state aid and support
Or information on the place of residence with data from the naturalisation authority
the software allegedly detects an "increased risk of irregularities"
SyRI would set off an alarm if someone received housing benefits but was not registered at the address in question
An employee from the Ministry of Social Affairs would then take a closer look at the data
If they believed that something could be amiss
which is passed on to the relevant authorities
The agency responsible for housing benefits would send an inspector to the "risk address" in question
For Tijmen Wisman, chairman of the civil rights NGO Platform Bescherming Burgerrechten (Platform for Civil Rights Protection)
The data protection principle of purpose limitation is turned on its head because it is not defined for which purposes the data was collected
individual citizens are not even informed if the software classifies them as a "high-risk citizen"
"You end up in a register and get a score for a certain risk," says Wisman
"On the basis of the data in this register
decisions are made that affect you personally as an individual
But you don't even know that you're in the register or what consequences that can have for you personally."
Does this mean that the Netherlands are a surveillance state
It’s obvious that many things are done differently there compared to other countries
So-called "intervention teams" have existed in the Netherlands for around 15 years: police
the service providers for employee insurance
social security and local authorities have been working together in interdisciplinary teams to intervene in socially deprived areas
This is not necessarily meant as a repressive approach. It is no secret that crime and social problems are often connected
Different authorities working together in this area can also be of advantage – social issues are not just left to the police
But what if those who work together in teams now also merge the citizen’s data to form profiles – is that a breach of privacy
or rather the extension of a cooperative approach
information on fines and tax data to data of state support services
information regarding the place of residence
data concerning reintegration at work after a long illness and personal debts up to information on the health insurance status
According to civil rights activist Tijmen Wisman
there had been no intensive discussions on the new regulation; on the contrary
the regulation was "simply waved through" by Parliament in 2014

"The risk model is a collection of one or more sets of related risk indicators that may be combined to assess the risk that certain natural or legal persons are not acting in accordance with applicable law
If one were to disclose what data and connections the Inspectie SZW is looking for
(potential) lawbreakers would know exactly on which stored data they would have to concentrate"
Have the SyRI projects up to now really made a significant contribution to combating welfare abuse
tax fraud or violations of labour law? In a reply to a request by AlgorithmWatch
the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment says that results are only available for a single project so far
namely for the operation in Capelle aan den Ijssel described above
There were 113 risk reports for this project
The identified violations of the law have resulted in the discontinuation or recovery of state benefits and allowances in a total volume of 496,000 euros (including subsequent savings)"
[su_box title="When and How is SyRI Used?"]SyRI is not used throughout the whole of the Netherlands
but only at the specific request of a so-called co-operation association
The request for such a cooperation usually comes from a municipality whose administration would like to work together with other administrations
such as the social insurance carrier for employees or the tax authorities
The goal is defined by law: To combat or prevent the unlawful use or recourse to public money or social security institutions or other income-related state benefits
action is supposed to be taken against tax and duty fraud and labour law violations
but also against illegal exploitation of labour
SyRI has been applied four times so far: in addition to Capelle aan den Ijssel also in Eindhoven
and projects have been running in Haarlem and Rotterdam since 2018
the municipality of Eindhoven has not sufficiently succeeded in gaining an overview of the developments and steering them in a positive direction”
the plan was to " break through the intimidating climate and contribute to improving the quality of life in this district and the industrial area"
This should be done by using the data "required for the 'Neighbourhood-centred approach' risk model built into SyRI"
"It was determined that the use of the respective data is necessary to achieve the objectives of the project." In Haarlem
data is compared coming from the municipality
the social security bank responsible for child benefit and pensions
the immigration authority and the Inspectie SZW

"This may reveal unlikely data combinations that give rise to further investigations," the application states
trying to find out exactly how the SyRI software is supposed to contribute to solving these problems
the only answer is that thanks to a "risk analysis" supported by SyRI
"a selection of risk addresses" is going to be provided
The inspectors of the agencies and authorities do not seem to know where to start
That’s why it comes in handy if the software suggests names and addresses of people for whom there is any irregularity in the data.[/su_box]
the data is examined for so-called "false positive" signals
as Ministry spokesman Ivar Noordenbos explains to AlgorithmWatch: "Since the data is linked automatically in accordance to a pre-defined risk model
it can happen that a risk is wrongly indicated because of imperfections in the model
To give a fictitious example: Assuming that the model would not be familiar with the concept of retirement homes
then recipients of the basic state pension could be suspected of living in a common household without having reported this
A data analyst at Inspectie SZW therefore first examines the software's signals for such obviously false risk signals so that no risk reports are generated
the data analyst would notice that the situation of the recipients of a basic state pension is different than presumed
The corresponding data would be sorted out as 'false positives' so that they would not be used in any subsequent checks
Such false signals are also used to adjust the risk model as far as possible so that the corresponding error does not occur again”
62 of the 113 cases in Capelle aan den Ijssel have not been found to be in violation of any law
which was intended precisely to guarantee the protection of privacy
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment declined to comment on the current proceedings
the part of the law that concerns the use of SyRI would have to be declared unlawful
It would then have to be amended or even be completely abolished
The Dutch government would have to put its risk profiling on hold
whether the civil rights initiatives can sue SyRI at all or whether a person directly affected would have to prove that their fundamental rights had been violated
As long as it is not known just how SyRI works
proving exactly that should be extremely difficult

Police in the Rotterdam district of Hoogvliet fired at two suspects during a high-speed chase Tuesday evening
The incident unfolded after officers responded to a report of a firearm threat in nearby Hellevoetsluis
officers located the two suspects in a car
but later resorted to shooting directly at the fleeing vehicle
a 20-year-old man from Rotterdam and a 35-year-old from Capelle aan den IJssel
were apprehended and taken to the hospital with injuries
police discovered an object resembling a firearm
The Dutch National Criminal Investigation Department (Rijksrecherche) has launched an investigation into the police shooting
a standard procedure when officers discharge their weapons and individuals are injured
The Dutch authorities have placed Sami Bekal Bounouare on the National Wanted List
The Moroccan-Spanish man is wanted for involvement in the attempted assassinations of a Spanish politician in Madrid and an Iranian activist in Haarlem
He is also wanted for a murder in Capelle aan den Ijssel in 2021 The authorities offered a €50,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest
Bounouare is suspected of directing an attempt to assassinate an Iranian activist and publicist in Haarlem during the early hours of June 6 this year
Internationally, Bounouare is wanted for involvement in an attempt to assassinate Spanish politician Alejo Vidal-Quadras in Madrid in November 2023
The far-right politician was shot in the face by a suspected hitman and barely survived the attack
The Dutch police have arrested two suspects for involvement in the attack on Vidal-Quadras, a 27-year-old woman from Den Bosch and a 38-year-old man from Tunisia
Both are also suspected of involvement in the attempted assassination of the Iranian activist in Haarlem in June
A 27-year-old Colombian is also in custody for the Haarlem attack
Bounouare is also suspected of involvement in the assassination of 37-year-old Wisam Al-Albassi in Capelle aan Den IJssel in 2021. The man was shot dead while walking his dog.
The Dutch authorities offered a 50,000 euro reward for information that leads to Bounouare’s arrest
The man has lived in the Netherlands since 2010
but also spending time in Schiedam and ‘s Hertogenbosch
The electricity grid in Rotterdam and the surrounding area has reached its maximum capacity
Large consumers who apply for a new connection or want to expand their existing one will now end up on a waiting list
The affected area includes a large part of Rotterdam-Zuid
Parts of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpernerwaard are also affected
Stedin is investigating whether it can reward some large consumers for using electricity at non-peak times
Large consumers who would like to participate can register with the grid operator
Stedin also appealed to households and small businesses to avoid peak hours on the electricity grid - between 4:00 p.m
“By using charging stations and heat pumps mainly outside these peak hours
residents and businesses help relieve the electricity grid,” regional director Maarten Bijl said
Stedin is working with TenneT on expanding and strengthening the grid around Rotterdam and expects it to have space again from 2029
The power grid throughout the Netherlands is under pressure
Demand for electricity keeps rising as the country transitions away from natural gas for cooking and heating and fossil fuel vehicles
Zuid-Holland is the only province in the Netherlands that still has some space on the electricity grid
All other provinces are colored red or orange
“Zuid-Holland still has some white spots because heavier grids were installed here due to the many industries,” a spokesperson for Stedin explained to NU.nl
the electricity grid is reaching the limits of its capacity and therefore expansion is necessary
A 30-year-old man from Gouda was arrested on Thursday evening in Capelle aan den IJssel following the laser projection of anti-Semitic texts onto a building, the police announced on Friday
Police Several reports were received around 11 pm on Thursday about a blue laser-projected text on a white office building in the Rivium business park in the municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel
located in the Rotterdam metropolitan area
A video posted on Twitter shows the slogan "Joden runden de slavernij
blanken schaften het af," translating to "Jews ran slavery
The text shown on the building used language previously associated with white supremacy and far-right nationalism
by blaming the Jews for all slavery in the past
and falsely claiming that white people were not linked to past history of slavery
King Willem-Alexander formally apologized for Dutch historical ties to the slave trade.https://twitter.com/maassen_agnes/status/1677195815117283328
After an investigation to determine the probable direction of the projection
police officers located a man nearby with the necessary projection equipment
The 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of discrimination and incitement to hatred
The man remains in custody at a police holding facility and will be questioned on Friday
the chairwoman of the D66 party in Rotterdam
labeled the text as "repulsive" on Twitter
"It's important that the perpetrators are quickly identified
I plan to address this in the council with written questions," she wrote
A laser projector to display hate speech and statements promoting discriminatory behavior was already used on the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam during the nationally televised New Year’s Eve countdown. In February, racist texts were briefly projected onto the Eindhoven city hall

TU Delft's latest news
At the town hall of Capelle aan den IJssel
Vuik was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau – this honour is conferred on a person who has rendered outstanding service to the Dutch society
Not only as a scientist Vuik has made a meaningful contribution to society; thanks to his modest
connecting and initiative-driven personality
he has also meant much to others outside the university walls
Kees Vuik’s career at TU Delft started in 1977 with a degree in Applied Mathematics
With four of them he shares a TU Delft connection
The field in which Professor Vuik operates is numerical analysis
A branch of mathematics that bridges the gap between the processes taking place in the reality surrounding us and the prediction of these processes using a computer
numerical mathematics has a strong connection with computer science
because algorithms must be implemented efficiently on state-of-the-art computers.
Because there is an increasing need for computing power to solve and calculate complex problems
Vuik devoted the past few years to the realisation of a Delft High-Performance Computing Centre (DHPC) on the TU Delft campus
This supercomputer offers scientists and students more flexibility in their research
Vuik fulfilled an important role in the establishment of the Delft Center for Computational Science and Engineering and the 4TU Applied Mathematics Institute

A Dutch-based law firm has helped the Iranian oil industry evade United States sanctions for years, according to research by BNR
International Law Firm Taheri (ILFT) has set up at least six companies since 2020 to manage oil tankers with paid intermediaries as directors so that the real owner remained out of sight
This was done by a Surinamese subsidiary of the law firm based in Capelle aan den IJssel
the United States put three companies registered at ILFT’s office address in Suriname on its sanctions list
The companies are accused of involvement in the trade of Iranian oil
Iran uses the income from its oil trade to fund terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah
ILFT owner Masoud Taheri (44) told BNR that he is merely a service provider offering a “solution” for a client faced with a “legal issue at an international level.” The six oil tankers registered with ILFT are managed on paper by Surinamese people affiliated with the firm
ILFT plays an important role in Iran’s “ghost fleet,” which consists of hundreds of tankers controlled by Iranian interests via intermediaries
This clandestine oli trade earned Iran at least 50 billion dollars last year
head of the Iran Tanker Tracking Program and the anti-Iranian advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI)
the ships registered through the Dutch firm are among the “most notorious” clandestine carriers of Iranian oil
UANI estimates that the six tankers registered through ILFT have collectively exported 160 million barrels of oil from Iran since America’s sanctions took effect
Taheri told BNR that the trade in Iranian oil is not prohibited in Europe and Suriname and his firm adheres to the law
He strongly denies the suggestion that he contributes to financing terrorism
Taheri wouldn’t say who is behind the tanker fleet
though his website features the logo of the Iranian state oil company NIOC under the heading “Important clients.”
Police announced 20 arrests in two separate money laundering investigations on Tuesday
The first case involved hundreds of detectives who raided 22 different locations in the Netherlands to tackle an organized crime ring that allegedly laundered over a hundred million euros
The other case saw a gang broken up after they used high-end watches and forged documents to launder ill-gotten money
Seven suspects were arrested in the first case
The investigation was launched over two years ago with an eye on the people taken into custody
early Tuesday morning tactical teams raided the suspects' homes and took the suspects into custody
More specialized units were sent to Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Montfoort to secure commercial properties to allow the hundreds of detectives involved to safely carry out their job
"Information was available that the suspects were involved in drug trafficking and money laundering
The investigation team believes that in recent years a sum of more than a hundred million euros has been laundered by the suspects," police said
The suspects were placed in restricted custody
and were only allowed contact with their legal representation
A total of 22 homes and commercial properties were raided
police in Luxembourg and Serbia also took part in the case in their own countries
but Dutch authorities did not release more detail about the international involvement
"Expensive cars and cash were seized in today's searches," police said on Tuesday
detectives and digital specialists will work with the contents of business administration
telephones and computers that were taken today."
police said they arrested 13 suspects and raided three homes and a commercial building in an investigation into the facilitators of organized crime
The suspects are accused of laundering criminal money through the trade in luxury watches
and participating in a criminal organization
According to the police
the suspects use their trade in Rolex watches to launder money for organized crime
“Dealers in exclusive watches sometimes come into the picture in organized crime investigations
The watches are used as means of payment or collateral in the large-scale drug trade
The suspects arrested on Tuesday are a 71-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman from Rotterdam
a 36-year-old and 46-year-old man from Capelle aan den IJssel
a 28-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man from Moordrecht
They are in restricted custody for further investigation
That means they are only allowed contact with their lawyers
Investigators searched three homes in Moordrecht
as well as a business in Berkel en Rodenrijs
Tuesday’s raids were not the first in this investigation
and Capelle aan den IJssel and an office building in Alblasserdam
Investigators searched a jewelry store in Rotterdam in October 2020
suspected of being used as a stash location
The German authorities also searched two jewelers in May this year

an experiment will start with running night subways in Rotterdam and its surrounding areas
transit company RET will run subways on all lines for an hour longer on Fridays and Saturdays
This means that the last subway will leave Rotterdam at 1:30 a.m.
Most all routes will remain the same during this experiment
because Pijnacker and The Hague does not want to pay to participate in the experiment
They feel the Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague should pick up the bill
Nissewaard is also not participating in the experiment
Schiedam and Capelle aan den Ijssel a total of 530 thousand euros
despite residents' fears for noise pollution
"The subway can only turn around in Spijkenisse
Whether the night subway will also run on the Hoekse Line
The municipalities along the Hoekse Line are not very enthusiastic about the experiment
but that may change if it proves successful
RET expects to be able to transport around a thousand extra passengers per weekend
"That's also good for local entrepreneurs"
"But we especially hope that people who go out decide to leave their car because of this
That's better for the environment and for road safety
because many in the nightlife public have a drink."
The success of the experiment will be evaluated in December next year
The evaluation will not only look at extra passengers transported
but also at problems caused by the extra noise
De Kringloopwinkel: Thrift shops in the NetherlandsBookmarkBookmarkBy Manja van KesterenUpdated on Oct 24
there is nothing like browsing my local thrift shop or charity shop (or in Dutch: kringloopwinkel)
The smell (reminiscent of my grandma’s house…)
The sights (do they really think that obviously haunted doll will be sold?)
The bargains (only 50 cents for that vase!)
chances you’ll find a priceless heirloom during your thrift shop adventures are pretty slim
ever heard of the saying: one person’s trash is another person’s treasure
Some of the second-hand items you will encounter during your browsing
while our old stuff is still perfectly fine
the stuff found at thrift shops just needs some extra love
I have found some amazing things at thrift shops
such as vintage art nouveau mirrors from the 70s and a cute retro cabinet for only 50 euros
Are you ready to give cast-aside things a second chance
There are a few thrift shop chains that can be found throughout the Netherlands - these are the most popular ones:
RataPlan was founded in 1982
and back then it was called Stichting Kringloopwinkel
“To counter the enormous waste of raw materials and energy in society and the associated pollution of the environment.” RataPlan’s first store opened in Den Helder
the organisation has 30 thrift shops in North Holland
South Holland and Flevoland and provides work to people struggling to find work
What can you find at RataPlan? Well, almost anything really. Clothes, furniture, bicycles, toys, household items, books and more
and some stores even have a bicycle mechanic to fix your bike
Noppes is committed to a green world where everyone is included
Noppes collects more than seven million kilograms of textiles and household goods - about 76 percent of these products are reused and rehomed and the rest is recycled
This reduces CO2 emissions by roughly 5 million kilograms
You can find Noppes here: Purmerend, Wormer, Zaandam, Volendam, Hoorn, Grootebroek, Opmeer, Velserbroek, Beverwijk, Castricum, Nieuwegein, Houten, Woerden and Gouda
In the Netherlands, Emmaus consists of 14 residential and working communities
All branches are focused on giving people the opportunity to fulfil their lives in a meaningful way
to help them get out of a problematic situation
to improve the environment by sorting and reusing discarded products as much as possible
and to give people with a small budget the chance to buy things for little money
And what’s also great is that the money that’s leftover goes directly to charities at home and abroad
Founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne, Switzerland, Terre des Hommes ("Land of People" or "Land of Men") is an international children’s rights charitable organisation, located in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Syria, Switzerland and the Netherlands
Terre des Hommes runs over 40 thrift shops in the Netherlands
you help the fight against the exploitation of children
To see if there is a Terre des Hommes shop near you, enter your postcode in their site’s shop finder
In the Netherlands, the Leger des Heils (Salvation Army) has been collecting second-hand clothing and textiles for over 100 years. Today, you can find these clothes in the ReShare Stores
ReShare focuses on growth and innovation with benefits for people, society and the environment. They also strive for circularity within the textile industry. To achieve this, ReShare works together with municipalities
All the chains mentioned above also accept donations. So, is your attic looking a little messy or did you just Marie Kondo your closet? Take your old clothes and furniture to one of these shops to give them a second chance. Oh, and some of these stores will even pick up your things, so there is no need for you to drive anywhere if you can't
Have you ever shopped at a thrift shop in the Netherlands

Authorities arrested a driving instructor on Wednesday
accusing him of having sex with his 17-year-old student
Police said the 23-year-old gave the lessons in exchange for sexual acts with the girl
He is suspected of placing advertisements on sexjobs.nl
a website claiming to be a “erotic marketplace.” Officers working with a specialized unit investigating the identities of undocumented migrants and human trafficking (AVIM) started researching the case after they saw the posting on the website
“The suspect advertised driving lessons there which could be paid for by performing sexual acts,” police said in a statement
the team discovered that the suspect had had sex with the girl.”
The suspect was arrested in his home in Capelle aan den IJssel
He is expected to appear before a magistrate on Saturday in an initial hearing
Police did not say if sexjobs.nl cooperated in the investigation
The site’s code of conduct states that its managers will notify police whenever they think something is in violation of the law
The police busted a massive fake designer clothing operation in Capelle aan den IJssel on Tuesday after receiving an anonymous tip
Officers raided a business building on the Rivium Promenade and found “an enormous amount” of fake designer clothing
The tip to the police’s anonymous line Meld Misdaad Anoniem was about a person trading in fake brand clothing
The information led the police to the multi-company building on the Rivium Promenade
the man behind this operation used the building for storage and a store for his criminal activities
The police raided the building on Tuesday and found racks
and accessories “from just about all major designer brands.” Investigators estimated the value of these counterfeits at around 450,000 euros
Officers also searched the rest of the multi-company building and discovered two more units with fake clothing and shoes estimated to be worth another 50,000 euros
“The Intellectual Property Fraud Team is further investigating the suspects and the scope of the case
No arrests have been made at this time,” the police said
including a collision in one area and a broken-down train in another
has left large parts of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland with reduced passenger train service
Dutch railroad manager ProRail identified problems on four routes Monday morning in addition to scheduled maintenance
There were no trains running on the route between Haarlem and Zandvoort aan Zee because of the collision
Dutch national railway NS said a replacement bus service was in operation
Passengers should take into account they may need an extra 60 minutes to complete their journey
The problem was expected to continue through the end of the morning
A collision was also identified as the reason behind a shutdown in service between Bodegraven and Alphen aan den Rijn
Replacement buses will also run there through at least 1:45 p.m
This will also impact people traveling between the Utrecht and Leiden central stations
Journey times are also likely to be longer on this route until the problem is resolved
The NS was also running fewer Intercity trains between Gouda and both Rotterdam and The Hague after a train broke down
This was again expected to continue into the early afternoon
The extra travel time needed should be about 15 minutes or more
Affected routes include Gouda to the two larger cities
These incidents were all separate from delays causing up to 30 minutes of extra travel time between Amsterdam and Breda due to scheduled rail works
The repairs are due to be completed by Monday
the NS advised passengers to monitor the online travel planner for the most up-to-date information
In provincie Groningen vonden twee dodelijke verkeersongevallen plaats
‘In verschillende eenheden raakten agenten gewond
