Home » New Combat Support Ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy arrives at Damen
13 December 2024 – Combat Support Ship (CSS) Den Helder (A834) arrived in Vlissingen this morning after successfully completing her maiden voyage and sea trials
The new supply ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy departed from the Damen Naval shipyard in Galați
Romania on 16 November for her Sea Acceptance Tests (SATs) and is now in Vlissingen-Oost for the final outfitting phase of the project
the finishing work will be carried out before the CSS is handed over to the Netherlands Ministry of Defence’s Materiel & IT Command (COMMIT) in spring 2025
“It is wonderful to have CSS Den Helder at the quayside in Vlissingen,” says Damen Naval Managing Director Roland Briene
“Designing and then working with numerous suppliers to construct a large and complex naval ship like the CSS is a process of years and it is great to now be able to admire the result of all that hard work
This unique ship is the first of a whole series of vessels that we as national naval shipbuilder and strategic partner of the Netherlands Ministry of Defence will deliver to the Royal Netherlands Navy in the coming years
Working together with our national suppliers
we are accelerating and intensifying the coming programs for the renewal of our naval fleet
we are already rolling out the Maritime Manufacturing Industry Sector Agenda
which is receiving growing political support
We are bringing the core of naval construction back to Vlissingen and Zeeland
Damen Naval CSS Project Director Arjan Risseeuw was on board for the entirety of the sea trials from Galați to Vlissingen
“We carried out a large number of SATs along the way and simulated various emergency scenarios on board to see how the ship reacts
We are very satisfied with how the sea trials went and the cooperation between the different parties on board: our engineers and commissioners
It is a great ship that will strengthen the support and supply of our own fleet and our NATO partners.”
COMMIT Project Manager CSS captain (RNLN) Joost Meesters expressed his confidence that the Royal Netherlands Navy will gain a “beautiful and robust ship”
“We found no major problems during the sea trials and the propulsion in particular is performing well,” he said
“CSS Den Helder is the second tanker besides HNLMS Karel Doorman
and we really need it for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s permanent supply capacity
The idea was to add a robust tanker to the fleet
and I am confident that after finishing the remaining works we will have achieved that goal in the foreseeable future.”
The sea trials are an important part of a ship’s construction and pre-eminently meant to test the whole vessel
“It was imperative that we left Romania with a robust ship
Considering the area through which we sailed
we did not have the option of going back in case of problems
The ship had to be good enough to do the whole return trip and we succeeded in that.”
CSS Den Helder is the replacement for the supply ship HNLMS Amsterdam
The state-of-the-art supply ship can provide naval vessels with fuel
The CSS is deployable worldwide and can operate under high threat
It can also be used to provide emergency assistance and transport goods
The ship will soon be equipped with a Role-2 medical facility and can carry a helicopter
The nearly 180-metre-long ship will have a 75-strong crew and can take another 75 people on board
Den Helder has about as much cargo capacity as big half-sister HNLMS Karel Doorman
there is room for 7,600 m3 of diesel (F76) including self-use
1,000 m3 of helicopter fuel (F44) including self-use
434 tonnes of other goods including ammunition and 24 containers
the new tanker should be able to support a task force of six ships
the first steel was cut to build the ship in Galați
The ship was built in several modules and a large part of the hull was launched on 11 April 2022
where it was assembled with the other modules
the ship left the dock and arrived at the quay in Galați for further work and commissioning
Exactly 48 months after the first steel was cut
the ship is now at the quay in Vlissingen for final works
the ship will be christened and handed over to COMMIT for the installation of the combat systems
Commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2025
after which the CSS will be handed over to the Royal Netherlands Navy Command (CZSK) in 2026.

Damen press release – Translated by Naval News
The delivery of the new Combat Support Ship (CSS) for the Royal Netherlands Navy is approaching
The future HNLMS Den Helder began its sea trials this morning (Nov 17)
departing from Damen Shipyards’ yard in Galați
The new replenishment ship is expected to arrive in the next port around next weekend
the CSS will make its first nautical miles via the Danube River
Initial sailing tests will also be conducted
The trials will remain within or close to the territorial waters of NATO partners
The ship will then sail to the Netherlands for final outfitting
This will take place at Damen facilities in Vlissingen and Den Helder
where the vessel will be equipped with sensors and weapon systems
the Royal Netherlands Navy will gain significant replenishment capabilities
This will enhance the sustainability and operational availability of the naval forces
This is positive news not only for the Netherlands but also for international partners
The Dutch Ministry of Defence is increasingly focusing on its primary task: protecting its own territory and that of the alliance
The Combat Support Ship will make a concrete contribution to the deployability of other naval vessels
Dutch company Damen Naval produces ships for the Dutch Navy
much of the construction of these ships now takes place outside the Netherlands
This is a deliberate choice due to lower labor costs and the availability of qualified personnel
Through the Maritime Manufacturing Industry Sector Agenda
the Netherlands aims to preserve and strengthen its maritime knowledge
studies are being conducted to determine whether full construction of naval ships in the Netherlands can be feasible and attractive again in the future
Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding has entered the final stages of development of Den Helder
the new combat support ship being built to support the Royal Netherlands Navy’s (RNLN) multi-naval missions
Named after the Royal Netherlands Navy’s home base
the ship started its first sea trials a few days ago
where the construction activities took place
the CSS will sail in the territorial waters of NATO partners
The ship will then sail to the Netherlands to be equipped with sensors and weapon systems at Damen and Den Helder in Vlissingen
CSS will be operational in the second quarter of 2025
replacing HNLMS Zuiderkruis and HNLMS Amsterdam
HNLMS Den Helder will greatly enhance the Royal Netherlands Navy’s logistics capabilities
It is roughly 200 meters long and 26.4 meters wide and can house up to 150 personnel
which will be used primarily in conjunction with the multifunctional support ship HNLMS Karel Doorman (A833) to supply ammunition
and various replenishments to other Royal Navy and NATO allied ships
is equipped with two 40-tonne cranes and can carry approximately 20 ISO standard containers
The CSS can also be used in operations to prevent drug trafficking
The Dutch Defence Ministry states that this development is in line with the Ministry of Defence’s focus on the protection of national and allied territory
‘The capabilities of the CSS directly contribute to the operational readiness of both the Dutch Navy and its NATO partners
such as NATO allies,’ the ministry added

christened a ship this weekend while gleaming in a favorite pair of golden earrings
The Princess of Orange arrived in the harbor town of Vlissingen on Saturday for the christening of a new combat support ship, Den Helder. The ship, which was made by Damen Naval, will be the new supply ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Per the Dutch royal website
the new ship “will supply naval vessels at sea worldwide with fuel
Princess Amalia christened the ship with the words “I baptize you Den Helder and I wish you and your crew a safe voyage.” Afterward
she was given a tour of the ship and met with some of its personnel
as well as those who were involved in its construction
For the occasion, Amalia wore an ensemble in shades of pink, brown, and gold. ModeKoninginMaxima tells us that the pink trouser suit and camel-colored coat both come from the brand Max Mara
Amalia accessorized with a braided straw headpiece and a pair of familiar golden earrings from her jewelry box. UFO No More shares that the earrings come from LOTT. gioielli, a Dutch brand that takes inspiration from traditional Italian design. These are the brand’s medium-sized Classic Circle Earrings
then plated or treated with another material to produce the golden color)
They retail on the company’s website for €140
This is the second time that we’ve seen Amalia wear the earrings in public. In September, she wore them with a medieval-inspired dress for Prinsjesdag
the annual opening of the nation’s parliament
She also added other gold-toned accessories for the Prinsjesdag appearance, coordinating the earrings with a golden headband
Here’s one more look at Amalia wearing the earrings for the ship’s christening in Vlissingen
These seem right on trend for a 21-year-old princess—and the fact that she’s comfortable wearing statement-making jewelry certainly bodes well for the future

Port of Amsterdam and Port of Den Helder have decided to strengthen their cooperation on energy transition
and hydrogen through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU)
The Dutch ports signed the MoU on October 23
to intensify their collaboration in the areas of commerce
aiming to propel the energy transition further
Both ports are said to have a good starting position for offshore wind and renewable energy generation in the North Sea as well as conditions to develop sustainable energy landing
with particular focus on the development of a hydrogen hub
we emphasise the great importance of offshore wind activities for our port and our customers
The energy transition is an important pillar in the port development of the North Sea Canal area and the Maritime Cluster Den Helder
Both ports want to accelerate the energy transition by realising cooperation
This can involve setting up joint projects
in which the strengths of both areas are bundled
while retaining the uniqueness and local anchoring of both ports.”
added: “The role of port authorities as facilitators for the energy transition means that we have to look beyond our local interests and explore new partnerships
More intensive cooperation between our ports could be a means to increase our added value.”
Meanwhile, the Amsterdam port is working with international partners on establishing hydrogen connections
the port reached an agreement with Petronor
and GasLog to evaluate the technical feasibility and commercial viability of a liquid hydrogen corridor between the ports of Bilbao and Amsterdam
the Port of Amsterdam inked an MoU with Petronor/Repsol and KLM to explore the possibilities for the production of synthetic aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrogen-based synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF) in Bilbao
At the end of 2023, the Dutch port, together with SkyNRG and Zenith Energy Terminals, signed a joint study agreement (JSA) with Abu Dhabi-based clean energy company Masdar to assess the feasibility of a dedicated liquefied green hydrogen supply chain for Masdar-produced hydrogen to Amsterdam

The performance of new and existing jack-ups
the new CSS will start the final outfitting phase of the project
Work will be carried out over the next few months at Damen's shipyard facilities in Vlissingen and Den Helder
after which the vessel will be handed over to the Dutch Ministry of Defence's Materiel and IT command (COMMIT) in the second quarter of 2025
commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2025
after which the CSS will be handed over to RNLN Command (CZSK) in 2026
The new CSS is being built by Damen under a contract awarded in February 2020
The ship started manufacturing activities in Galați in December 2020 and was laid down in June 2021
and the first major section – measuring 90 m – was launched on 11 April 2022
The new oiler will be one of the first surface vessels to breathe new life into an ageing service
The Royal Netherlands Navy anticipates the delivery of its single Combat Support Ship (CSS)
As part of the country’s plan to transform all the ships in its fleet over the next 15 years – a goal worth several billion euros – the CSS will be one of the first surface combatants to breathe new life into an ageing service
Den Helder will arrive in the Netherlands from Romania
where the prime contractor Damen Schelde is building the new auxiliary fleet
Meanwhile the final outfitting will take place in the town of the flagship’s namesake
The CSS project is estimated to cost €375m ($445m); it is expected to become operational in Q2 2025
Based on the Karel Doorman
an existing multi-function support ship that entered service in 2015
the vessel will have the capability to operate in high threat situations when protected by frigates
It can also be used to prevent drug trafficking
control refugee flows and support emergency aid missions
The Dutch Government announced the procurement decision in December 2019
Damen signed a contract with the Defence Material Organisation for the construction of Den Helder in February 2020
Just over a year ago, Damen announced through social media that it had moved the vessel from a drydock to water for the first time after the installation of the main ship’s mast
CSS will measure approximately 180 metres long and will have a displacement of 22,400 tonnes
ammunition and goods to other naval vessels at sea
The vessel will have the capacity to accommodate a total of 150 personnel
with 75 crew members and 75 additional people on board
She will also offer space to house two helicopters and up to 25 containers on the upper deck
Damen also signed a contract with Facet Netherlands for the supply of a helicopter refuelling system for the vessel
While the delivery of the CSS replenishment oiler marks the start of the Navy’s renewal
there is still growing pressure for the service to deliver the renewal plan on time
The Dutch Ministry of Defence will still need to sustain its four Walrus-class submarines
the Karel Doorman and HNLMS Johan de Witt among others until 2026 at least
This will continue to cost the republic a considerable amount just to maintain a credible force in the interim
after which most of the new ships will have entered in the early 2030s
This is a crucial period that requires an unprecedented level of defence commitment across the Western coalition
HNLMS Tromp and its on-board NH90 frigate helicopter were approached by two Chinese fighter aircraft and a helicopter
The incident took place just as the Royal Netherlands Navy was conducting a patrol in the East China Sea
A credible maritime presence is necessary to ensure a dependable level of deterrence and thus security
Norwegian offshore vessel operator Havila Shipping has signed a contract with Peterson Den Helder for a platform supply vessel (PSV) from its fleet
the contract for the PSV Havila Borg will be in direct continuation of an existing contract
It encompasses a firm period of three wells estimated to last 215 days
The 2009-built Havila Borg is of a Havyard 832 design
The 3,787.4 DWT vessel can accommodate 23 people
Peterson previously hired Havila Borg in August 2024
to work on two wells for an estimated 200 days
Royal Navy warship HMS Somerset has returned to Plymouth after more than 100 days at sea
including six missions tracking Russian naval vessels in UK waters
The Type 23 frigate was recalled from Christmas leave to monitor a Russian task group moving through the North Sea
cutting short the festive break for the 200-strong ship's company
Somerset has sailed more than 18,000 nautical miles
mostly around the English Channel and North Sea
cargo vessels and the intelligence-gathering ship Yantar
it is with immense pride and joy that I welcome our return home from a successful deployment
"Our presence has made a real and tangible difference in delivering UK national security objectives and reinforcing Nato's mission of collective security
HMS Somerset also operated closely with Nato allies
More than 1,000 members of the public visited the ship during an open day in Hamburg
It was used to gather intelligence on Russian warships and took part in anti-submarine warfare training during Exercise Arctic Dolphin in the Norwegian fjords
HMS Somerset and her Merlin crew worked with Nato submarines - some of whose captains were undergoing the Submarine Command Course
The exercise saw HMS Somerset simulate attacks and carry out high-speed manoeuvres to push trainee commanders to their limits
The ship's company is now back in Devonport and preparing for well-earned leave

The anniversary of the Royal Marines has been marked by a 360-mile bike ride from the Netherlands to Portsmouth
the challenge saw a team of one Royal Marine and three Dutch Marines cycle from Den Helder
North Holland to Portsmouth to mark their 360th anniversary
"What an opportunity to celebrate the 360th birthday of the Royal Marines and our two Corps’ relationship," said Royal Marines rider Captain Sam Edwards
Marine 1st Class Halvar de Jager from the Dutch contingent said: "I'm looking forward to the return trip next year for our own 360th birthday."
arrived at HMS Excellent on Whale Island in Portsmouth on 13 September and were warmly greeted by the Deputy Commandant General Royal Marines

the Dutch Marines will celebrate the 360th anniversary of their own Marine Corps
The bike ride took the team from Den Helder through The Hague
Pett Level and Littlehampton before arriving in Portsmouth
The Royal Marines can trace their origins back to King Charles II and were formed as a Corps on 28 October 1664 as the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot (or Admiral’s Regiment)
The name Marines first appeared in the records in 1672 and in 1802 they were titled the Royal Marines by King George III.

New ship for the Dutch Navy: On February 22
the Dutch Crown Princess Amalia christened the new supply ship “Den Helder” with a bottle of champagne smashing against the bow of the ship
the “Den Helder” will supply other ships with fuel
The ceremony took place at the shipyard of the main contractor Damen Naval in Vlissingen and was also attended by the State Secretary for Defense
It can also provide emergency aid after natural disasters and can be used for anti-drug operations in the Caribbean
It was built at the Damen Shipyards shipyard in Galaţi
The ship left for the Netherlands in mid-November
This was also the sea trial with the first sailing tests
radar and navigation systems of the supply vessel were checked
Further tests will be carried out in the coming weeks
The weapon systems and sensors will later be installed at the shipping company in Den Helder
The Material and IT Command is in charge of this in collaboration with the Material Maintenance Directorate
The “Den Helder” is efficiently designed and highly automated
This means that fewer crew members are needed
The ship also consumes less energy and can stay at sea longer
as State Secretary Tuinman explained: “The crew members were already training with VR goggles before the ship was finished
This allows the maintenance team and the fire department to familiarize themselves virtually in advance.”
the “Den Helder” has an online condition monitoring system
This minimizes the time spent in a maintenance dock
Was Europa braucht, um sich ohne USA gegen Russland zu verteidigen
“Europe must take more responsibility for its own security and stand on its own two feet militarily,” emphasizes Tuinman
“Den Helder‛ is making an indispensable contribution to this
As Napoleon said: ‘An army marches on its stomach’
a fleet sails on fuel and its galley’
The combat support ship heralds the renewal of almost the entire naval fleet
the naval port should “quickly take on an appearance that deters enemies and gives the Dutch security”
The “Den Helder” is due to be commissioned on October 1

2024 Photo: Depositphotos.comA school in Den Helder in Noord-Holland has banned smoking and vaping unless pupils have written permission from their parents and wear a high visibility yellow vest while doing it
Just nine parents at the 1,300-pupil Lyceum aan Zee school said their children could vape or smoke during breaks
“The measure is meant to cause a bit of friction,” school director Hielke ter Veld told the Telegraaf
“We wanted to do something to engage parents and children in a conversation
We want to involve the parents in school policy,” she said
Ter Veld said parents often don’t know their children smoke or vape
“It’s one of the things that used to be part of the parents’ responsibilities but are now being left to the school,” school board chairman Hans van Beekum told the paper
“And the image of all those kids vaping in front of the school was horrible
The nine children who did get their parents’ permission
“We are under no illusion that they are the only ones who are vaping.”
Some parents objected to the yellow vest for restricting smokers’ and vapers’ movements and even made WW II comparisons but
the vests are simply meant to identify those who can smoke from the rest of the pupils
The first few days of the new regime have seen few pupils put on the vest and the measure has not given rise to the expected heated discussions
Fifth-year pupil Tanja said she found it “a bit shocking” to find herself alone
“My friends used to come outside with me if I wanted to vape
She also said she would not cut down on her vaping because of the measure
saying “no way I’m wearing the vest”
“Most pupils won’t want to ask permission from their parents and wear the vest
They will smoke less and that will hopefully become part of the school culture
If we only get a few pupils to stop smoking then it’s worth it,” Ter Veld said
Recent research has shown that many of the vapes used by teenagers contain harmful chemicals including too much nicotine and formaldehyde.

workshops and events about wellbeing for young people
That's how the new organisation MentalMotion aims to be different from other initiatives focused on mental health
"We try to promote mental health to reduce the pressure on therapists," says founder Marik Eijgenstein
he had just completed his Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
Life passing byMentalMotion wants to be a "part of a movement"
We want to bring something new without detracting from the wonderful support currently available
mental health problems are becoming more and more common and the pressure on professional care is increasing
Students go to the psychologist because their friends and acquaintances do it too
we try to show that there are other options as well."
"Many young people feel life is passing them by
They are dominated by worries and therefore don't have time to live in the moment and make friends and connections
We can't do much about their worries but we can help them deal with those by sharing our experiences
It's a bottom-up way to look at a person's needs
Peer supportPeer support is one of MentalMotion's pillars
Volunteers are trained to help other students individually or in a group
which "ensures they have more tools to engage in conversations," Marik explains
The organisation currently has 11 volunteers
but Marik hopes it will grow quickly.Gijs Hilhorst (23) is one of the volunteers
He is studying Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) at UU and joined MentalMotion a month ago
He explains that he used to "struggle" with addiction and depression when he first joined the university
He hopes to make a positive contribution by sharing his experiences and helping other students in a non-directive way
which allows me to help others casually," he says
Living roomThe communal space in Lombok is the beating heart of the initiative
It's just a five-minute bike ride from the central station
MentalMotio has a lot of space at its disposal
The convivial communal room offers complimentary coffee
the organisation must be a place where "young professionals" can easily drop in
The common room is open every Monday and Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
You can use the space to study or hold a meeting with a board or committee
Courses and events are also held in this space.
When they say young professionals are their target group
they mean anyone between 18 and 30 years old
"But if someone aged 32 comes in asking for help
All students and young professionals are welcome
Not at Utrecht Science ParkAsked to explain the choice of location
Marik says: "We didn't want to be at Utrecht Science Park because we want to be separate from the space where the university and university of applied sciences teach
students following vocational education (MBO) can barely be reached at USP
The campus is out of the way for those living outside Utrecht."
MentalMotion is involved in an initiative by housing boards at Utrecht Science Park
The boards recently expressed their desire for a meeting space at Utrecht Science Park
but we would rather train people so they can get started themselves
We want to be a kind of oil slick that slowly spreads."Letter of intentMentalMotion is not completely separate from UU either
The two parties have signed a declaration of intent indicating the university's desire to work with the organisation someday
"But there are a few requirements for that," Marik explains
the declaration means that we will talk to UU twice a year and we will be introduced to student supervisors
we would like to participate in the Wellbeing Weeks
for example.’"The letter of intent aims to encourage MentalMotion to further develop their project," says Tirza Wildeboer
project manager for student wellbeing at UU and one of the people involved in MentalMotion's Peer-Power guidance group
"We support MentalMotion's idea to increase peer support
although we think their plan is a bit short-sighted sometimes.""In addition
we need to think carefully about what we can solve with peer-to-peer support: based on evidence
which topics are suitable for this and which are not
We also think MentalMotion should carefully consider how they can coexist with other wellbeing initiatives and ensure all initiatives mutually reinforce each other
hence our intention to collaborate with MentalMotion in the long run
We are looking forward to seeing how their plans will develop."
Financial healthA UU-wide cooperation agreement will take some time
but together with associations and faculty
MentalMotion is already doing the necessary
"Our tool package includes workshops on positive health
We also want to organise themed events in collaboration with the association
We always try to work with the association to see exactly where the need lies."For example
the organisation recently organised an event with Atlas
The evening was dedicated to financial health
They also stopped by the sports council's board day to give a workshop to directors of student sports associations
Free participationMarik's startup currently consists of four people who get paid for their work
everything at MentalMotion is free for students
They can offer services for free thanks to sponsorships
"We're going to keep things this way for the time being," says Marik
"We are a partner of the Municipality of Utrecht until the end of 2025 and we are also supported by Dock and Oranje Fonds."

the joint venture owned equally by CAE and Leonardo
has announced the successful start of training on the NH90 Full Mission Flight Trainer (FMFT) following its relocation from the Rotorsim training center in Sesto Calende
to a new training facility at Maritime Air Base de Kooy in Den Helder
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (NLMOD) and Netherlands Defence Helicopter Command recently hosted a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new NH90 training facility in Den Helder. The ceremony was attended by officers from the Royal Netherlands Navy and Royal Netherlands Air Force; officials from the NLMOD; executives from CAE
Leonardo and Rotorsim; and military officials from Italy and Belgium
“We have trained our NH90 crews for the past eight years in Italy as part of the very successful Joint NH90 Training Program,” said Air Commodore Robert Adang
commander of the Netherlands Defence Helicopter Command. “This new training facility in Den Helder now allows us to train our aircrews in the Netherlands while further advancing our synthetic training capabilities
The value of simulation-based training is critical to preparation and readiness
and the NH90 FMFT plays a key role in complex mission training for our NH90 aircrews.”
As part of the relocation of NH90 training
Rotorsim moved the NLMOD-owned NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) simulator cockpit from the Rotorsim training center to the new facility in Den Helder
the NLMOD had contracted CAE to design and manufacture a new roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) full-mission simulator mothership
which includes a six degree-of-freedom (DOF) electric motion system
high-performance vibration platform to replicate vibration cues critical to helicopter pilots
and the latest CAE Medallion-6000 image generator with laser projector display system
The RO/RO cockpit design enables cockpits representing various helicopter types to be used in the mothership simulator platform
thus giving the NLMOD the flexibility to add simulator cockpits in the future
will now provide on-site maintenance and support services on the NH90 full-flight and mission trainer in Den Helder
“Through our Rotorsim joint venture with Leonardo
we are pleased to have supported the Netherlands NH90 training since 2011
and now assisting the Netherlands in relocating NH90 training to Den Helder,” said Marc-Olivier Sabourin
CAE. “The NH90 FMFT is now entering service in Den Helder where CAE had supported the operations of the Joint Lynx helicopter simulator for over 25 years
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Netherlands Ministry of Defence to support their training and readiness requirements.”
