Organizers enforce the dress code strictly — no clothes or accessories from after the 1800s
she was always in black and not [wearing] too much stuff
which attracts about 100,000 visitors each year from around the Netherlands and abroad
Amateur street actor Stef Jongbloed reveled in the festive energy
“you also have so many people that just dress up just for fun and just walk around here the entire day
Also doing it together is what makes it so amazing,” he said

Deventer football club Go Ahead Eagles won the Dutch Cup for the first time in history
defeating AZ Alkmaar on penalties during the final in De Kuip
Go Ahead secured a place in the Europa League group stage next season after winning their first appearance in the cup final in 60 years
The stunned crowd at the Rotterdam stadium saw Go Ahead captain Mats Deijl pull his team level on a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time
saved the third and fourth penalty during a shootout
after neither team scored during 30 minutes of extra time
The Deventer club scored all four of its shots during the last phase of the cup final
with last-second substitute Julius Dirksen knocking the decisive ball in the back of the net
Both teams started the match with an attacking mindset
where Go Ahead found clear scoring opportunities
The Alkmaar club held possession for longer
with attacker Troy Parrott striking the post
When the players came out for the second half
the match referee briefly suspended the match after Go Ahead fans set off fireworks
causing dense smoke and limiting visibility
a lengthy review from the VAR in the 49th minute prompted officials to award AZ a penalty
Go Ahead defender Joris Kramer was determined to have fouled midfielder Ernest Poku
but the match official ruled Go Ahead's Mathis Suray ran into the area too quickly when he sent the ball clear
with De Busser diving the wrong way as Parrott scored in the 55th minute to make it 1-0
Go Ahead Eagles pressed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages of the match
Their efforts appeared to be in vain until deep into stoppage time when AZ defender Peer Koopmeiners handled the ball in the penalty area
Despite Koopmeiners' protests that he had been fouled
the referee awarded a penalty which was confirmed by the VAR
Deijl calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro
sparking jubilant scenes among the 17,500 Go Ahead supporters in attendance
The first half of extra time saw AZ regain the upper hand
though fatigue began to show on both sides of the pitch
De Busser made several key saves for his side
though his teammates also had chances to score
securing their first-ever Dutch Cup title and their a place in the Europa League
The Deventer club will play at least eight matches of European football next season
It was also a lucky day for the Go Ahead supporter who had already purchased a tattoo with his team's cup win earlier this month
"I hope he doesn't have to laser it off," said Deijl during a press conference last week
AZ manager Maarten Martens said he was trying to block out negativity and pessimism his team faced in the run-up to the final
with many Alkmaar supporters saying their team was likely going to lose to their rivals
AZ only has three points in its last six Eredivisie matches
"We've been having a bit less luck in the Eredivisie lately," said Martens at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist before the final
"We need to radiate a lot of energy and passion."
Deijl also felt his own team was not favored to win
although that can also have a positive effect
It seems obvious to me that AZ is the favorite
although it is a compliment that people see it differently," said Deijl during a press conference in Zeist last week
it was their first time playing in a cup final since 1965
there are flags everywhere," Deijl said of his club's home in Deventer
The issue of anti-institutionalism and anti-institutional violent extremism was placed on the policy agenda in the Netherlands in June 2023 with the publication of the report on anti-institutional extremism by the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD)
we will explore the concept and phenomenon
and focus on what anti institutionalism looks like in the Netherlands
Part of the phenomenon is also the movement of sovereign citizens
They pose a challenge that increasingly more municipalities have to deal with
We question whether it makes sense to qualify anti-institutionalism as a form of (violent) extremism by referencing the academic definitional debate and by comparing the various models to study radicalisation with the way anti-institutionalism is materialising in the Netherlands
After studying the radicalisation process and the underlying push and pull factors of anti-institutionalism
we shift our focus to the national and local response mechanisms and policy frameworks
We conclude with the identification of key challenges and opportunities for prevention response mechanisms

Deventer in The Netherlands transformed when almost a thousand people donned costumes
creating a picture postcard image of 19th-century England for the Dickens Festijn
the Dutch town celebrated one of its biggest festivals in honour of English writer Charles Dickens
Participants brought back to life characters from The Pickwick Papers
and more in a giant form of street theatre
and Miss Havisham all featured among chimney sweeps
and even someone playing the role of Queen Victoria in the historic old town of Deventer
Street market stallholders were selling antiques and traditional sweets and cakes of the time
The annual tradition began as a protest against local rules that made Emmy Strik keep her antiques shop closed on Sundays
Strik and other shop owners dressed up in 19th-century English costumes to form a protest march around the centre of town
Now 84 years old, Strik has amassed more than 1,000 Dickensian costumes for the event
which organisers enforce with a strict dress code policy with absolutely no trainers
or any of the accoutrements of 21st-century living
This was the 32nd year of the Dickens festival
which now attracts around 100,000 visitors each year to see the actors and those who just dress up for fun to wander around the streets of Deventer and join in with the world’s biggest improvised play

Four secondary schools in Deventer sent their students home on Tuesday morning after a threat of a mass shooting at the VMBO De Marke. In consultation with the police and municipality, the Etty Hillesum Lyceum decided to cancel morning lessons at all four schools it covers, including De Marke, De Stentor reports
A screenshot of the threat is circulating in messaging groups
The message writer says that they will commit a shooting at Marke Noord (where students of the upper grades are) and possibly also Marke Zuid (where the lower grades are taught) today or tomorrow
“I will kill without mercy,’ the message reads
They said they planned the attack months ago
and that their motives would never be guessed
the four secondary schools under Etty Hillesum Lyceum—De Marke Noord and Zuid
and Arkelstein—informed parents that the first three morning classes were canceled and kids were being sent home
Students can’t enter the schools until at least 10:15 a.m
when the schools hope to have more information
there is no reason to believe that the threat is real
but the schools and authorities decided to rather play it safe
A police spokesperson confirmed to De Stentor that they were investigating the threat
“The police cannot say more at this time.”
The 32nd edition of the Dickens Festijn in Deventer successfully kicked off on Saturday
with organizers reporting a positive response from the crowds
which transforms the medieval Bergkwartier area into a 19th-century English town
was met with good weather and a festive atmosphere
and the atmosphere was great,” said Martijn Westerbrink
but that fits well with the Dickens Festijn.”
left some travelers unable to make their way to the event via train for several hours
some visitors opted for buses or arrived later in the day
the train issue spread out the visitors throughout the morning
which made the queues run more smoothly,” Westerbrink said
The Dickens Festijn attracts roughly 125,000 visitors each year
Westerbrink expects that attendance will reach the same number this year
visitors waited in line for up to two hours
the event did not have to temporarily close due to overcrowding
“The queue is part of the experience,” Westerbrink added
and performances to entertain those waiting
accessibility ambassadors were stationed throughout the festival to assist people with disabilities in locating a designated entrance
Although the entrance was available in previous years
a survey last year revealed that visitors had difficulty finding it
thanks to the visibility of the ambassadors
nearly 950 characters from the works of Charles Dickens
While the event has traditionally been free
there are indications that entry fees may be introduced next year
“Costs have risen so significantly that it’s almost unavoidable to charge for entry,” Westerbrink said
the anticipated fee will be between 5 and 6 euros per person

Dutch top-division football club Go Ahead Eagles is working on expanding its stadium in Deventer
RTV Oost reported that residents who live close to the stadium have contacted a lawyer's office in Amsterdam to try to force the club to move the stadium away from the current area
Go Ahead plans to raise the stadium's maximum capacity to 13,000
The stadium can currently hold 11,000 people
The municipality of Deventer supports this plan
"This comes as a shock to us." The club had expected the residents to oppose building a new stand as part of the expansion but had not expected this kind of resistance at the last second
There is a file with over 50 objections against the location of Go Ahead Eagles stadium
"The English setting of a stadium with open corners in a residential area will lead to more spectators
and more events when the capacity is increased
The nuisance in the neighborhood will increase
The environment is not suitable for processing large flows of visitors
The stadium does not fit into a national vision for good spatial planning," said the residents via the attorney office AVC
Go Ahead stated that it has been in intensive consultation with these residents since 2022 to properly prepare the plans for a new IJsselstand and B-side
"The necessary changes have been made to the plans in the last year and a half at the request of the neighbors
This to the full satisfaction of most residents," says Van Dop
The old stadium entrance on the Brinkgreverweg was previously closed
and visitors can no longer walk behind the stadium in the residents' back garden

The secured truck parking facility on Van der Landeweg in Deventer
featuring enhanced safety and amenities for truck drivers
which has long accommodated over 100 trucks
now meets all European requirements following recent upgrades
The renovations include enhanced facilities for resting drivers
and 24/7 safety monitoring from a private control room
These improvements aim to provide a comfortable and secure environment for truck drivers during their mandatory rest periods
The province of Overijssel has contributed to the project
emphasizing the importance of good and safe facilities for truck drivers in the logistics sector
a leading and sustainable business park in the Netherlands
This facility aligns with the recent development of a hydrogen filling station at the park
serving both national and international trucks
Despite the positive developments in Deventer
Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN) stressed the ongoing shortage of truck parking spaces in the country
A recent study for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management estimated a deficit of approximately 4,400 spaces
TLN warned that the shortage is likely to worsen due to the growing transport and logistics sector and the disappearance of existing parking facilities

Sam van Deventer, the director of the Kröller-Müller Museum during the Second World War, was deeply involved in collaborating with the Nazis, according to a new biography. Ariëtte Dekker has uncovered a disturbing story in her book The Confidant: Sam van Deventer (1888-1972)
published in Dutch this week by Prometheus
Van Deventer even hosted a family 50th birthday party for Arthur Seyss-Inquart
the Reich Commissioner for the German occupying forces in the Netherlands
Seyss-Inquart created a reign of terror and under his rule around 100,000 Dutch Jews were sent to their deaths
After the Second World War Seyss-Inquart was found guilty of war crimes and executed
in a national park on heathland in the east of the Netherlands
In 1908 Van Deventer was taken on by Helene’s husband
From then onwards he would become closely involved with the couple
their trading and shipping company—and the art collection
Although German-born Helene had married Anton in 1888
she has always been believed to have become Van Deventer’s lover
For two decades Van Deventer lived with the couple on the Kröller-Müllers’ estate just outside The Hague
Dekker gained access to a chest containing more than 3,000 letters from Helene to Van Deventer
Dekker believes it unlikely that a sexual relationship was actually consummated
since Van Deventer once wrote that Helene had convinced him of the superiority of platonic love
Helene was also twenty years older than him
Helene Kröller-Müller and Anton Kröller (1920s) Kröller-Müller Museum (photo archive)
Van Deventer soon became involved in helping Helene build up her Van Gogh collection
although initially he found the artist difficult to appreciate
In 1914 she wrote to him that the artist’s published letters were “like a true mirror of the human soul”
Van Deventer soon became an enthusiast and later went on to organise touring exhibitions of Helene’s Van Gogh works in Switzerland
Germany and Belgium (1927-28) and in America (1936-37)
In 1919 Helene had commissioned the Belgian architect Henry van de Velde to design a “grand museum” for her collection (which included many other late 19th- and early 20th-century artists)
but a few years later the plan was aborted because of financial problems impacting on Anton’s business
A more modest museum finally opened near Otterlo in July 1938
with Van Deventer’s much-needed assistance
only a few weeks after the outbreak of the Second World War
Helene Kröller-Müller’s coffin among her Van Goghs in the Kröller-Müller Museum (15 December 1939) Kröller-Müller Museum (photo archive)
What is deeply troubling about Van Deventer’s life is the role that he played following the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940
As an assistant to the opportunistic Anton
he made every effort to be helpful to the Germans
who quickly promoted him as director of the Kröller-Müller Museum
Sam van Deventer at the Kröller-Müller Museum (November 1940) Kröller-Müller Museum (photo archive)
Van Deventer would sign letters to the German authorities “Heil Hitler” and gave them Nazi salutes
He allowed the Germans to temporarily store art
Van Deventer arranged the sale of three of the museum’s German old masters
including Lucas Cranach’s Venus with Amor the Honey Thief (after 1537)
for the personal collection of Hermann Göring
Van Deventer then spent part of the proceeds acquiring paintings by Camille Pissarro and Camille Corot which had been looted from Jewish owners and delivered by German art dealers
is that Van Deventer successfully safeguarded Helene’s important collection of modern art from war damage
The Van Goghs were safely stored in a specially constructed shelter
built beneath two metres of concrete and eight metres of sand
He was also successful in protecting the national park and its hunting lodge during the war
the Kröller-Müller Museum was liberated by Canadian troops
Two days earlier Van Deventer had been arrested and he would then spend 15 months in detention
Initial attempts were made to charge him for war crimes
He was freed in July 1946 and in 1950 the case against him was adjourned
in 1948 he had been formally dismissed as director of the museum
which had reopened in October 1945 under a new acting director
Van Gogh’s The Olive Trees (June 1889) Museum of Modern Art
By far the most important work was The Olive Trees
Van Deventer had bought this in 1925 from the estate of the distinguished German collector Karl Ernst Osthaus
paying 20,000 guilders (then around $8,000)
This was recorded for the government’s Art Property Foundation after the war
Dekker believes that it is “likely to have been a senior Nazi official”
possibly even Göring himself (during the war he acquired twelve Van Goghs
The whereabouts of The Olive Trees during the war remains unknown
but by 1946 it was with two Swiss-based dealers
The noted American collector John Hay Whitney bought the painting in 1947 and his widow bequeathed it to MoMA in 1998
funded by gradually selling off his personal art collection
In 1966 he moved to Switzerland and bought the house of the deceased architect Van de Velde
Van Gogh’s Recumbent Nude (early 1887) Kröller-Müller Museum
Van Deventer died in 1972 and his ashes were buried next to the graves of Helene and Anton
He had retained only two of his Van Goghs at the end of his life: the painting Recumbent Nude and the drawing Woman with a Wheelbarrow (March 1883)
In 2005 both were bequeathed by his son Rudi to the Kröller-Müller Museum

Text description provided by the architects. The new city hall in Deventer unites the old historical city hall with a new city office
The new building complex is located at the ‘Grote Kerkhof’ and extends as far as the ‘Burseplein’
The 24.000 m2 large project consists of 20.000 m2 new buildings and 4.000 m2 renovation and restoration of existing listed monuments
The project consists of an entrance building with a main building behind it and unites all of Deventer’s employees
It houses the city council and all municipal services and invigorates a formerly forgotten part of the inner city
PlanBUILDING AND ENVIRONMENT The front building at the ‘Grote Kerkhof’ consists of two layers with a sloped roof and a facade composition with strong vertical lines, like its neighbouring buildings ‘de Hereeniging’ and the old city hall. This continuity makes the front building effortlessly fit in with its historical surroundings. By placing the roof backwards a city balcony is created. This makes the facade appear more separated, creating a recognizable facade at the ‘Grote Kerkhof’.
ElevationFACADES AND ART Open filigree wooden frames and closed brick volumes alternate within the facades. The stone facades consist of large block masonry with protruding window frames. The bricks are multi-coloured creating a lively image. The filigree facades consist of a grid of different sized oak wood frames. The oak framework provides space to integrate contemporary art in the building’s architecture.
© Scagliola BrakkeeIn collaboration with local artist Loes ten Anscher a series of aluminium grids was designed to fit within the oak framework, containing 2.264 unique fingerprints of 2.264 different citizens of Deventer. Spread out over the outer and inner facades of the building they form one large work of art. The visible presence of Deventer citizens in the facade turns the city hall into a true ‘Citizen House’.
© Scagliola BrakkeeSUSTAINABILITY The Deventer City Hall is one the most sustainable public/government buildings in the Netherlands. Thanks to a clever design with tall spaces, vast amounts of daylight and air, optimized use of as many natural sources as possible, the implementation of green and multiple technical sustainable measures.
© Scagliola BrakkeeThe great amount of windows
roof lights and high ceilings allow natural light to enter the building everywhere
creating an agreeable working environment and simultaneously lowering the electricity consumption
The exposed concrete inside the building contributes to a high-quality
comfortable indoor environment: the concrete stores warmth or cold in various seasons
The shed roof construction in the public hall prevents direct sunlight from entering and overheating the building
Ventilation ducts and grids in the windows and floors let fresh air seep into the building
By transporting this heated air out of the building via the atrium
rainwater and water from the IJssel river (for cooling and heating) increases the building’s sustainability with 25% as opposed to similar offices in the Netherlands
The City Hall received the Dutch sustainable GPR score of 8 to 9 as well as the international qualification BREEAM ‘Excellent’
