A shooting occurred Tuesday night on Martin Luther Kinglaan in Diemen, leaving one person injured. The suspects, dressed in dark clothing, fled the scene toward Diemen Station, authorities said.
Emergency services received the first reports of the shooting around 10:30 p.m. Police and medical responders arrived at the scene, where they found one victim who had been shot. The individual was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The victim’s condition has not been disclosed.
Police cordoned off the area around Martin Luther Kinglaan to conduct an investigation. Forensic teams examined the scene for evidence, and officers interviewed witnesses.
The police have appealed to the public for assistance. “If you witnessed the incident or have relevant information, please contact us,” said a spokesperson for the Diemen Police. They have also asked anyone with camera footage from the area to share it with investigators.
Witnesses can provide information by calling 0900-8844 or anonymously via 0800-7000.

Ex-Formula 1 driver and four-time Le Mans 24 Hours class winner Jan Magnussen will return to Formula Ford 1600 in the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone next month.
The 1992 Formula Ford Festival winner, father of Haas F1 driver Kevin, will take part in the Silverstone extravaganza on 2-3 November at the wheel of a Van Diemen RF78 run by Mike Gardner’s GT Race & Trailers operation.
Like the Foundation Racing RF92 in which Magnussen won the Festival at Brands Hatch 32 years ago, the older Van Diemen will be liveried in the colours of Duckhams, the British oil brand.
The Walter Hayes will be Magnussen’s second outing in FF1600 since his famous Festival victory, which was sealed from the back of his heat after he was excluded from qualifying.
The Dane, now 51, contested the 50th anniversary Festival in 2021 in a Low Dempsey Racing Ray GR14, but the WHT will be his first appearance in a Van Diemen since 1992.
Magnussen revealed to Autosport that the Silverstone outing in the RF78 came up purely by chance.
His 15-year-old son Luca, Kevin’s half-brother, is friends with Gardner’s step-son Giancarlo, which resulted in an introduction when Magnussen was racing at the Silverstone Festival in August.
“Luca and Giancarlo are karting buddies and were hanging out when I came over to do the Festival,” said Magnussen.
“That’s how I got to meet Mike and Giancarlo’s mother.
“He was telling me about all the Formula Fords he’s involved with and was showing me some pictures, and the subject of the WHT did come up.
“After the weekend, Mike contacted me, and said, ‘Look I’ve got a car, why don’t you come over and do the WHT?’
“I don’t see myself as a historic racer, but I love driving the old cars when the opportunity comes up.
"I’m really looking forward to the WHT: the RF78 is a bit before my time, but it looks super-cool.”
Magnussen raced a Ford-engined Turner GT in the Historic Tourist Trophy and a Shelby Daytona Cobra in the International Trophy for Classic GT Cars at the Silverstone Festival, sharing both with fellow countryman Nikolai Mortensen.
His son Luca races in the Italian-based ROK Cup series this year after winning the Danish X30 senior title in 2023.
Magnussen nearly lost the chance to win the 1992 Formula Ford Festival as the result of a late deal with Duckhams to run his Van Diemen in its colours.
New bodywork in the oil company’s livery, which a works Van Diemen had run every year since 1984, was supplied to Foundation ahead of qualifying.
What the team didn’t know was that it was lighter than the much-repaired set of panels it had been running, which resulted in Magnussen’s exclusion from qualifying when his RF92 was found to be underweight.
But the Dane was able to come through to take Festival honours after around-the-outside manoeuvres on Neil Cunningham and then Oliver Gavin at Paddock Hill Bend in the final.

is to hand out free condoms in an effort to combat the rise in sexually transmitted diseases among youngsters
A majority of council members supported the motion from D66
The measure will come into effect in 2025 and 2026
The condoms will be handed out in designated places
where girls can also get free menstrual products
The parties referred to figures from national health institute RIVM which point to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases
The provision of the condoms is accompanied by a campaign
do it safe” aimed at informing youngsters about STDs and their consequences

who was sentenced to life in prison by a court
had his sentence reduced to 25 years and four months after an appeal on Wednesday
The Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled that the 44-year-old from Amsterdam is guilty of ordering a brutal daylight assassination attempt in Diemen in November 2015
but acquitted him of ordering the assassination of Iranian man Ali Motamed in Almere two weeks later
Prosecutors had again recommended a life sentence against F
The court read the verdict from the highly-secured courthouse near Schiphol Airport
F., also known as “Noffel,” was sentenced to 18 years in jail in 2018 for the murder attempt in Diemen in which dozens of shots were fired at Peter R
The court ruled that he had issued an order to kill the Amsterdam criminal who barely survived the attack
managed to survive by trying to chase down the gunmen in his car before he drove into a drainage ditch off Fregat
First responders had to fish him out of the water and pull him into an ambulance to begin treatment
Prosecutors in the original case presenting evidence based on chat messages sent via the encrypted platform Ennetcom
the district court added a life sentence on allegations that F
helped orchestrate the murder of Ali Motamed
an Eneco mechanic who was not believed to have any ties to the criminal underworld
The Iranian died as a result of the shooting in front of his home in Almere in 2015
The Court of Appeal said there was evidence that F
which was only prevented because the gunman he recruited was jailed before the Almere incident
the court said there was not enough evidence to show that he was involved in the actual murder
Acting as an "intermediary and conduit" is not enough to demand a life sentence
was instead convicted on appeal of the lesser crime of attempted solicitation of murder
and his conviction for wide-scale money laundering was also upheld
"spoke with apparent ease and without any moral sense about this murder as a purely business matter
a nice gig,” the court wrote in a statement
"The court considers that the defendant’s actions left no doubt about his ruthless and merciless attitude: a human life was worth nothing to him
F.’s lawyers were stunned by this decision but said that the acquittal of arranging a murder was “completely correct.” They said last month that this should never have been a conviction partly because the assassination was already discussed in decrypted communications long before the device attributed to F
They also recalled that Stefan Blok, the Minister of Interior Affairs at the time, told Parliament that the intelligence services AIVD and MIVD had “strong” indications that the government of Iran was behind the murder of Motamed. The attorneys pointed out that nothing was found during the investigation to suggest any contact between Iran and any phone that F
Motamed allegedly lived in the Netherlands under a false name. He was presumed to be on the run from the Iranian regime after committing a bloody murder
was found at a home in Landsmeer the following day
Evidence showed the 52-year-old Diemen woman was killed
and prompted police to take a suspect into custody
Alleman was the co-owner of a small accounting and tax advisory firm in Landsmeer
She was last seen in the village just north of Amsterdam on January 8
Her car was discovered on Thursday at a McDonald’s in Amsterdam-Noord
where police had conducted an investigation
“Based on information from the investigation
the police decided to enter a home on Dorpsstraat in Landsmeer
officers found the woman’s lifeless body,” police said
a few hours after police released a statement saying they were concerned for her well-being
A 31-year-old Amsterdam man was arrested later that night
The man was identified as a suspect over the course of the investigation
but police have not revealed a possible motive
He was due to be questioned by police on Friday
and was only allowed to have contact with his attorney
Alleman described herself as a married mother with at least one grandson when she was recently profiled in an article in the Telegraaf about how much fun she and her family have around the Christmas season
She and her husband have spent the last two decades collecting houses and other miniatures to place in their massive Christmas village display in their living room
Her family opened their Diemen home up to the neighborhood to show off the display in December
“Luckily my husband likes it as much as I do
because it’s impossible to do it on your own
He was already a big fan of Christmas when we met.”
Energy supplier Vattenfall has confirmed they are finally canceling their plans to build a biomass power plant in Diemen
the company is investigating whether it can heat homes sustainably using other options
including geothermal energy and residual warmth
This is stated in a cooperation agreement by Vattenfall with several municipalities and the provinces of Noord-Holland and Flevoland
Biomass power plants are often criticized by environmental organizations
Wood is one of the biological-based raw materials that are burned in the plants
This results in air pollution and can contribute to deforestation
Vattenfall had plans to build a large biomass plant in Diemen which would have used wood pellets
But the Council of State ruled last year that the Province of Noord-Holland gave permission for this too easily
Residual heat is the heat that is released
by waste incineration plants or in the industrial sector
it is transported to homes as a means of warming them
Geothermal energy is extracted by pumping up warm water sometimes hundreds of meters underground
Vattenfall is also focusing on the use of large electric boilers and converting a power station in Diemen to use hydrogen instead of natural gas
Vattenfall said that they have received “active support” from the municipalities and provinces for the development of sustainable heat sources
the company has said that there are still “important challenges” to make the alternatives of gas heating affordable for suppliers and customers
The cooperation agreement does not include any agreements on financial support from municipalities or provinces towards Vattenfall
the energy company and the lower authorities are entering into discussions with the government on subsidies
Vattenfall will supply residual heat from data centers and water purification plants with its heating network from Diemen for the equivalent of 140,000 homes
Chair Fenna Swart of the Clean Air Committee (CSL) called the decision "a great victory for nature
and our air quality." She added that the committee will continue to fight against biomass
Swart predicts a significant increase in subsidized biomass use because the combination with CO2 capture and storage has been on the rise recently
Current issue, Podcasts, NewslettersTasmanian devilsby Luke Davies SocietyJonathan auf der Heide’s ‘Van Diemen's Land’
with subtitles) late in Jonathan auf der Heide’s strange – and strangely compelling – Van Diemen’s Land
The voice-over runs sporadically yet hauntingly through the film and is at times reminiscent of that in Terrence Malick’s 2005 The New World (“What voice is this which speaks within me?”)
“There’s nothing to a piece of man”: the simple phrase fits neatly into the meditative monologue that becomes a kind of compendium of dark death ruminations; it even sounds a little Shakespearean
for this is a film about Australia’s most notorious cannibal – the convict Alexander Pearce
who was hanged in 1824 – and it’s Pearce (Oscar Redding) who is speaking the words
“Pieces of men” might be the more apt phrase by the time this film is through
Pearce’s story became part of colonial folklore almost as it was happening
or Modern Facts; Containing Narratives of the Most Extraordinary Occurrences of Recent Date
Marcus Clark fictionalised Pearce as the convict Gabbett in his novel For the Term of His Natural Life
Robert Hughes brilliantly captured a certain nightmarishly gothic derangement in his vivid portrayal of Australia’s penal settlements
Early nineteenth-century Hobart and Macquarie Harbour are blighted and godforsaken
and Hughes’s Pearce is a perfect product of this hellish environment
It would seem that Hughes’s rendition has seeped into the consciousness of a new generation
Now that some of that generation are making movies
it’s no surprise that Pearce would emerge in film
Michael James Rowland’s docudrama The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce aired on ABC TV
took as its premise the notion that Pearce spawned a bloodline of hillbilly cannibal freaks who continue to wreak anthropophagite havoc in the Tasmanian wilds to this day
Tasmanian auf der Heide has taken a more mannered
He made the short film Hell’s Gates on the same subject and now brings to the screen a fully realised version of the tale
Hughes describes the impenetrable wilderness around Macquarie Harbour as “dripping twilight from dawn till dusk” and
it seems there’s not a dry frame in Van Diemen’s Land
Cinematographer Ellery Ryan has captured beautifully the sodden tonal density of Tasmania’s old-growth forests
It’s a palette of sombre greens and greys; there’s barely a shot of sky
Werner Herzog managed this in his great Aguirre
atmospheric claustrophobia in a totally outdoor environment
the bush is cloying and devours: “Eight men in this dark wood
Far from God’s eyes.” (Further along: “Four godless men walk to the devil.” The voice-over is like an adult version of ‘Ten Green Bottles’.) The woods are indeed dark and deep
This land is the opposite of the Virginia settlement in The New World
“Here the blessings of the earth are bestowed upon all
None need grow poor.” Virginia was seen as new Eden; Van Diemen’s Land was wasteland and dumping ground
we’re with a timber-felling work party of eight convicts
the sooner we can go home.” There is no home anymore
the distant birthplace of “little pock-marked blue-eyed” Pearce
who was sent to Australia for stealing six pairs of shoes
There is only the bleak prison lodging of “Hell’s Gates”
Auf der Heide has kept narrative complexity to a minimum
Their numbers dwindle as their hunger increases
We’re not pursuing any traditional journey of a hero through an ordeal
Nor do we get a sense of the men being chased
they effectively belong to it and the world outside the wilderness ceases to exist
auf der Heide seems to be interested in exploring
in a group of men already beaten into submission
the tensions that play out between the primal impulse to survive and the numb comfort of despair
between triumph of will and surrender to fate
is the tension between paranoia and co-operation
The US reality TV show Survivor was based on this
but Pearce and his fellow convicts don’t seem capable of anything so sophisticated as Game Theory
Pearce takes no part in the first murders except as an observer
and Robert Greenhill (Arthur Angel) is portrayed as the true instigator
He was just a kid,” says Pearce to Greenhill of the second victim
Nor does Pearce participate in the party’s furtive decision-making conversations other than by nodding his agreement
as if in a trance – though in voice-over he says things like
but the flesh of Dalton rots his teeth.” Later
as we get a glimpse of an arm being stuffed into a blood-soaked canvas bag while the men pack up their meagre camp
“Easier than cutting sheep.” His transformation from blank-eyed shoe thief to cinematic blood-cipher is gradual
consistent and complete: “Your soul to the devil
He confessed all to the chaplain and magistrate Robert Knopwood
convinced the other prisoners must still be alive
this time with fellow convict Thomas Cox in tow
with about half a pound of Cox in his pockets
(That sentence is best not read aloud.) The rest of Cox’s butchered body lay nearby
Pearce also had with him some of the food the two had escaped with from prison
auf der Heide has managed to humanise Pearce and his party
“In Ireland I’d be rovin’,” sings one man mournfully
“With her at my command / But I wake up broken-hearted / Upon Van Diemen’s Land … ”
“Do you have a pretty one back home?” asks one of the convicts
“for lonely she’ll die.” Actual death for these men is everywhere and imminent; then there is the long
One is not necessarily much worse than the other
A convict talks of what they all just left behind: “After the first hundred you could see his spine pokin’ through
So for the next hundred they had to whip his arse
He never tried to escape after that.” “There’s no going back,” says another
“Not for any of us.” The men huddle together
something more than animal but less than human
imbued with qualities of fairytale and waking nightmare
It reminds us that – beyond the land’s original inhabitants – there were no ‘Australians’ in the 1820s; there were English and Scots and Irish
and they were made up almost exclusively of the downtrodden and the downtreaders
and free settlers were still greatly in the minority
Auf der Heide has taken this oppressive material and made of it
His film will certainly not be to everyone’s tastes: the character arcs are extremely subtle and
The film doesn’t try to lead us to any conclusions
It doesn’t try to investigate Alexander Pearce’s motives or psychology
wading through a welter of blood in a seer-like trance
whatever frustrations may emerge from the audience’s experience of wanting firmer ground
Van Diemen’s Land is somehow redeemed by a bizarre and unexpected narrative vehicle: the Gaelic voice-over
Even when enigmatic – “If you have no scars
the crow will eat your eyes” – it seems perfectly placed
like a ripple of music heard faintly against thunder
Joseph Campbell pointed out that in some monotheistic traditions
“What is the nature of the power that sustains Satan through eternity?” One response is that it is simply the memory of the echo of God’s voice when God said
“Go to hell!” “That is a great sign of love,” comments Campbell dryly
since the worst kind of hell – and Satan feels the worst of it
We witness Pearce becoming more and more of a phantom as the bloodshed increases
seems to be sustained by the memory of an echo and by the pain of what is absent – society
there’s nothing at all of ‘civilisation’ in Van Diemen’s Land
As in David Malouf’s novel An Imaginary Life
we are at the barbarous far fringes of empire
the violence is played out in contrast to the settlers’ attempts to be civilised; the two are interwoven in the drama
Jonathan auf der Heide dispenses with the contrast entirely: if there is a God
“he dances with an axe in his hand,” and if there is culture
“There’s a distant scream inside me,” says Pearce

A large majority of the local council has voted in favor of handing out free condoms to residents in Diemen
Only two council members voted against the motion
The plan is for condoms to be handed out in 2025 and 2026 in places where free menstrual products can currently be found
The parties had handed in the motion ‘Do it right
do it safely!’ because they think action is needed to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and “to promote sexual health.”
they referred to research conducted by the health institute the RIVM in June 2023
which showed that the number of STDs among young people is increasing
The parties think that “preventing is better than curing
and prevention starts with awareness and availability of condoms.”
The free condoms must be accompanied by information about STDs and safe sex
The parties also used the motion to ask the municipality to find out how it can encourage catering establishments
and associations to install condom vending machines

Firman wants to return Van Diemen to its traditional single-seater market
in which it was dominant from the 1970s to the 2000s - most notably in Formula Ford
but it also achieved success in Formula Renault and built the Formula Vauxhall Junior cars
"That's why we've done a car to FIA F3 rules
so we can get back to our heritage and start pitching for these championships to try to lower the costs for drivers," said Firman
"It would be nice to see the costs come down and spread the net for a wider audience
We'll try to keep the company lean and mean
The cars will be produced from the old Van Diemen factory near Snetterton
"We've given it a lick of paint!" said Firman
whose father remains on board: "His experience is essential." The head office will be at Silverstone
with the initial cars – named RF350 – expected to be delivered as early as February 2023
the year that also marks the 50th anniversary of Van Diemen's formation

Vattenfall has been granted permit and Dutch SDE++ subsidy to build a 150 MW “Power-to-Heat” E-boiler at the company’s heat and power plant Diemen in Amsterdam
The final investment decision is scheduled for mid-2022
after the recently initiated tender has been completed
The E-boiler is believed to be the largest in Europe and can be put into use in 2024
“We are very glad to have been awarded both the permit and the SDE++ subsidy for building a large 150 MW E-boiler at Diemen. Vattenfall wants to supply 100% sustainable heat in the Amsterdam region by 2040. In addition to E-boilers, Vattenfall is therefore also working on a number of other sustainable heat sources, such as biomass
data center heating and aqua thermal heat,” says Ulrika Jardfelt
The Dutch SDE++ scheme provides subsidies for the use of techniques for the generation of renewable energy and other CO2-reducing techniques
SDE++ subsidies are awarded over a period of 12 or 15 years
The E-boiler is similar to a 'kettle': the installation converts electricity into hot water
which can be supplied to households and companies or that can be stored in the already present heat buffer
“The E-boiler only switches on if the electricity mix is sustainable with a lot of electricity from solar and wind
the gas-fired power plants in Diemen are still needed to produce electricity – power plants that also supply heat very efficiently
We expect that these gas-fired plants will remain necessary in the coming decades for security of supply in the Netherlands; first on natural gas
but later hydrogen from renewable sources,” says Alexander van Ofwegen
With the current expected deployment of the E-boiler
Vattenfall initially expects to be able to supply approximately 15% of the heat in the Amsterdam region with renewable wind and solar electricity
the number of hours that the E-boiler can run will increase in the coming years
given the growth in the number of wind and solar farms in the Netherlands
Vattenfall commissioned a 120 MW e-boiler in Berlin which so far is the largest within the company

Emma Cotton (or Cotterell) sailed into Sydney harbour on the Rubicon in 1833 as a free immigrant
Emma’s genteel life unravelled four years later when she appeared before a Sydney court charged with stealing a bundle of “wearing apparel”
Emma was transported to Van Diemen’s Land (lutruwita or Tasmania) for seven years
a local newspaper reported she was “better known as old Emma the fortune teller”
If Emma had been able to foretell her own future
Conditions for convicts in Van Diemen’s Land were tough. Food was rationed. Many prisoners spent time in penal stations such as Port Arthur, female houses of correction known as “female factories”
where convicts were required to serve the initial period of their sentences
Details of Emma’s case were carefully captured in a convict indent register
five of these rectangular registers with their spidery handwriting and tatty bindings survive
women and children who arrived free or were born free in the Australian colonies but became convicts in Van Diemen’s Land
They challenge popular narratives of Australian history suggesting only convicts from Britain and Ireland were transported to Van Diemen’s Land
The oldest was a 75-year-old man who laboured on a road gang
As well as Indigenous convicts from the Cape colony (now part of South Africa) and New Zealand
more than 60 Aboriginal men from mainland Australia were transported as convicts during the 19th-century frontier wars
In the Port Phillip District of New South Wales (now Victoria), some Aboriginal warriors engaged in economic sabotage. Yanem Goona, also known as “Old Man Billy Billy”, was thought to be a ringleader. When a large flock of sheep was driven off a station near Mt Arapiles in 1845
a white-led Native Police contingent tracked the missing animals
locating around 200 sheep in a “bush yard” built by local Aboriginal people
Yanem Goona was arrested, tried and sentenced to ten years’ transportation to Van Diemen’s Land. When serving his initial probationary period at Norfolk Island
a visitor noted how the old man cried whenever he thought of home
Yanem Goona died in custody at the Impression Bay probation station on October 31 1848
Of these 627 people named and detailed in the register
Forty-five went through the South Australian law courts
247 free people were sentenced to transportation and sent to Port Arthur and other convict establishments
The first entry in the register is for Thomas Carroll
an Englishman who arrived free in Launceston in November 1831
and his services breaking in fillies and colts
After moving to Hobart and working as a groom
Carroll was found guilty of stealing a saddle and sentenced to transportation for seven years
He was sent to work on a road gang a few miles from Hobart
Peter Haley (or Caley) was a groom in Adelaide before being sentenced to transportation for ten years for horse stealing
Born near Cape Town, Haley was a Khoisan man who arrived free in Sydney in 1839
By 1850 he had become a notorious horse thief
The following year he was transported to Van Diemen’s Land where he served 15 months at Cascades probation station before being sent into service at New Norfolk
His sentence was extended to transportation for life
Haley was hanged in Hobart in February 1859 alongside one of his friends
Not all formerly free people who became convicts in Van Diemen’s Land were sentenced to transportation
Occasionally their sentence was “death recorded”
meaning they were sentenced to death with an immediate reprieve
a southeast Asian sailor found guilty in Adelaide of attempted murder on the high seas

Joseph Levy appeared before the Berrima Circuit Court in NSW in September 1841
One of six children from a Catholic family living at Blacktown
Joseph was a key witness in a case involving an alleged horse-stabbing
Levy told the court the horse’s owner had promised him a cow and a calf if the boy said he had witnessed the attack
Levy was charged with perjury then transported to Van Diemen’s Land for seven years
He received a total of 83 “stripes on the breech” and spent 61 days in solitary confinement
was a carpenter from Dublin who came out to Van Diemen’s Land as a free migrant
He was 75 when tried in Hobart in 1836 for receiving 40 pounds of stolen mutton and sentenced to transportation for 14 years
Caffray laboured on the Grass Tree Hill road gang on the outskirts of Hobart while under sentence
He died in 1854 from paralysis at Impression Bay on the Tasman Peninsula
rape and assault) account for only 8% of cases resulting in transportation to Van Diemen’s Land
robbery and stealing from a person (49.5% of cases)
horses and sheep) also figure frequently (12.3% of cases)
which don’t attract lengthy prison sentences today
perjurers and those convicted of “unnatural offences” also lost their freedom
Convicts who offended while serving their sentences received further punishments
All the free people who became convicts in Van Diemen’s Land had something in common
The activities they engaged in were criminalised
Those who survived the system were viewed as “tainted” within their own lifetimes
But the criminal deportation of these formerly free people tells us more about colonial Australian attitudes and values than it does about the individuals themselves
The municipality of Amsterdam is meeting with Diemen and the Rijkswaterstaat to determine how to handle the traffic chaos caused by road works on the A10
Rush hour traffic has been crazy in the Amsterdam region for three days straight
there was a 35-kilometer traffic jam on the A10
The travelers’ organization ANWB advised road users to expect an hour of delay
Traffic jams on Wibaustraat and Weesperstraat added another 15 minutes to the typical travel time
but we are jammed again,” an ANWB spokesperson told Parool
traffic only started to subside from around 7:00 p.m
On Tuesday, the municipality of Diemen complained that the issues on the A10 were causing a lot of detour traffic
The municipalities of Amsterdam and Diemen will meet with the Rijkswaterstaat in the coming days to monitor the situation and come up with possible measures
a spokesperson for Amsterdam’s traffic alderman Melanie van der Horst told Parool
The parties already agreed to place digital signs in Diemen to divert traffic via Gooiseweg and lessen the pressure on the municipality
Rijkswaterstaat also expects that the traffic will decrease in the coming days as more people go on holiday and motorists get used to the new situation on the A10
Amsterdam will monitor whether that is the case and take measures if needed
A challenge-exposure model was developed for dose-dependent induction of subclinical (moderate) atrophic rhinitis (ar) in conventionally raised Dutch Landrace and Large White pigs
Under favorable climatic and housing conditions
pigs were intranasally challenge-exposed with Pasteurella multocida-derived toxin (Pm-T) 3 days after pretreatment by inoculation with 1% acetic acid
Pigs were challenge-exposed with 1 of the following Pm-T doses: 0 (control)
or 40 μg of Pm-T/ml of phosphate-buffered saline solution (pbss)
subclinical (moderate) ar status was defined as intermediate conchal atrophy (grade 2 for ventral conchae on a 0 to 4 scale and grade 1 or 2 for dorsal conchae on a 0 to 3 scale
respectively) and perceptible difference in change in brachygnathia superior (cbs) between control and challenge-exposed pigs between the beginning and end of the study
All Pm-T-exposed pigs had nasal damage that was dose-dependent
The higher Pm-T doses resulted in higher ventral conchae atrophy and dorsal conchae atrophy scores
resulting in significant (P < 0.05) differences between controls (3.88 mm) and the 13-
weight gain per week for Pm-T-exposed pigs was lower than that of controls after week 3 (P < 0.01)
and 40-μg Pm-T-treated groups respectively
intranasally administered Pm-T mimicked the pathogenic effect of in vivo infection with toxigenic Pm strains
The optimal model to induce subclinical ar appeared to be 13 μg of Pm-T/ml (0.5 ml/nostril/d) on 3 consecutive days
Our model should enable studies of exogenous and endogenous factors involved in development of ar
independent of the colonizing ability of the Pm strain used

This week more international students than ever arrived in Amsterdam to study at the UvA
Folia spoke with three of them about their first few days here
‘It’s not as common for Dutch students to smoke weed as I thought.’
studies Philosophy at the University of British Columbia
What is the most fun thing you’ve done so far?‘Getting my bicycle
My first ride had everything I expected after studying the Dutch culture: I saw beautiful canals
I got lost a lot and people screamed at me angrily.’
And the scariest?‘Your intersections without traffic lights
What has surprised you?‘It was a bit of a shock to find out I would live in Diemen
Especially when I smelled the freshly mowed grass
that made me think of home where I worked as a landscaper.’
What have you found the most difficult?‘To remember where I parked my bike
But it’s black so it blends in easily with all the other ones.’
And the most rewarding?‘To buy stuff from Ikea to help me feel comfortable in my new room
Because that’s the hardest thing when studying abroad: making yourself feel at home.’
studies Psychology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico
What is the most fun thing you’ve done so far?‘The welcome party in my student flat at the Prins Hendrikkade
I met so many amazing people from all over the world and heard a lot of interesting stories.’
And the scariest?‘I worked in the U.S.
but then I lived in Mexico for a year so I have to get used to the language again
Especially with all the different accents here.’
What has surprised you?‘The enormous amount of bicycles everywhere.’
What have you found the most difficult?‘To miss my friends and my favourite Mexican dish: pozole – soup with meat and vegetables.’
And the most rewarding?‘The fact that I’m here
Not many people in Mexico get that opportunity.’
studies Psychology at the University of British Columbia
What is the most fun thing you’ve done so far?‘A canal cruise
Everyone was drinking and playing beer pong
but I just sat down and talked with some other international students
lifestyles and learned a lot from each other.’
And the scariest?‘Not knowing what my seventeen flat mates in the Weesperflat were going to be like
What if they wanted to party all the time and I would never get any sleep
The scariest thing now is having to share three mini fridges with all of them.’
What has surprised you?‘It struck me that it’s not as common for Dutch students to smoke weed as I thought it was
it’s more tourists and international students that do it.’
‘To make the most of the introduction week and at the same time spend enough time with my mom and sister who were here for four days
And the most rewarding?‘I don’t feel the pressure to act like some cool guy
I’m being accepted for who I am.’
BRSCC National Formula Ford 1600’s 2018 champion Niall Murray will return to the series for this weekend’s Snetterton season finale in a 2021-spec Van Diemen car

going through airport security is no easy trick
You may have to explain to agents why you have props like a bullwhip in your carry-on
Making it big in showbiz as a magician and escape artist is no easy trick
but Sabine the Sorceress did just that
She’s the only woman in the six-star variety troupe "The Illusionists," appearing at the Redding Civic Auditorium on Tuesday
The show features some big names among young magicians including the 2018 World Championships of Magic winner An Ha Lim of Korea
Other featured performers are daredevil Jonathan Goodwin of Wales
British comedian and trickster Paul Dabek and Aussie unusualist/magician Raymond Crowe
Van Diemen's youth wasn't spent catching bullets in her teeth or using a bullwhip to snap petals off flowers between other people's teeth — both tricks she's mastered.
“Dance was my life,” said van Diemen
she'd gone professional with The Holland Show Ballet.
Then a magician's assistant in the show was injured and she was asked her to fill in
she performed the fire cage illusion. "There’s fire in it
She emerged unsinged and absolutely hooked on magic. “I immediately thought
‘This was amazing. I want to keep doing this.'"
She learned the trade for a few years as a magician's assistant
she began a five-year collaboration with Dutch illusionist and Vegas headliner Hans Klok
“The first gig was the West End" magic show “Impossible” in London
she said. "So much for taking it slow.”
Her parents weren't exactly dazzled by their daughter's new career, she said
They’re very ‘keep your feet on the ground’ kind of people.'"
Their opinions changed after they saw her show
she said. Now all of her parents' friends seem to know about their famous daughter
The 2018-19 season of "The Illusionists" is van Diemen’s first
She’s also the first female member in the history of the troupe
magic has been mostly a man's world
Until recently, women who headlined did so as part of a couple's act, like the Pendragons
“We’re breaking barriers at the moment,” van Diemen said of women magicians
Maybe little girls in the audience will think
van Diemen gives a magic kit to a girl in the audience and urges her to practice
While she’s “very aware of being the only female in a men’s group,” her fellow cast members treat her as one of the gang
“They have no mercy,” she said
“They don’t treat me as ‘the woman.’ We’re very equal and they make me feel super welcome.”
“I try not to move or dress overly sexual
so the audience perceives me as one of the" performers
Van Diemen’s repertoire includes audience favorites like the water tank escape
a variation on the trick made famous by Harry Houdini
“Doing illusions gives you a lot of adrenaline because lots of things can go wrong,” she said
“Sometimes I want to tell people how it’s done because it’s so difficult
my God! How is that possible?’”
She doesn’t want to spoil surprises by revealing what tricks she’ll do Tuesday
but she hinted there's going to be a special feat with daredevil Jonathan Goodwin
“It’s actually not magic," she said
You have to really trust each other to do those things.”

Van Diemen describes The Illusionists as "Vaudeville 2019." It's also family-friendly, she said
“It’s not made for kids,” but “it’s nothing too scary.”
Redding is a one-night stop on the show's six-month North American tour.
Traveling to new venues daily can be a little taxing, van Diemen said
but the physically-demanding performances are a joy
“I love to see the looks of wonder and astonishment on people’s faces

When he arrived in the UK in 1981, having cut his teeth karting in Italy, Senna entered all three of the separate Formula Ford championships that existed in the country back then. For a young Brazilian, not yet fluent in English and with a distaste for the climate in England, Snetterton in Norfolk was a considerable culture shock. But Senna was there to try the Van Diemen (pictured), the most competitive single-seater at the time.
Lotus team manager, Peter Warr, from his biography, Team Lotus: My view from the pit wall
The late, great writer Russell Bulgin had known Senna since his earliest days in the UK. For the November 1986 edition of the much-loved magazine Cars & Car Conversions, Bulgin arranged for F1’s rising star to sample several different rally cars, including Phil Collins’ Brooklyn Motorsport Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. The piece is now regarded as a classic of modern automotive journalism.
"I know nothing about rallying. I’ve seen pictures in magazines, sometimes watched it on television. And I deliberately haven’t listened to anyone about rally driving. I want to find out for myself," Senna said.
"Well you can see the talent of the guy within two-and-a-half miles. He made a right balls of the first corner, but you could feel the embarrassment coming down the intercom. Straight away he said 'I’m so sorry' and he realised it’s no good driving this car slowly, you’ve got to get to grips with it," Collins told Bulgin.
"It’s much more exciting than in a Formula One car. Because here you don’t have the top, top speed, but you have a tremendous acceleration. Unbelievable acceleration – and it’s rough. It’s a much more instant emotion than it is in a Formula One car," Senna concluded.
Bulgin noted: "Senna’s last try in the Cosworth is wonderful. He takes the final left-hander in three jolts of oversteer, running the car up the shale piled on the track edge to strengthen his exit. The engine note doesn’t waver, the hands pummeling the steering wheel. He looked like a rally driver: a brave rally driver."

Christchurch’s Will Neale has extended his lead in the 2024/25 Yokohama South Island Formula Ford Championship after winning three races including the prestigious Wigram Cup in the weekend. With home track advantage
Neale also finished second in the second race at the Wigram Revival meeting with the win going to rival
“Very happy with the weekend,” said Neale. “We made the best of what we have as we are still struggling with engine power. It’s the first weekend without my dad so a massive thanks to Gerard.”
It had been close racing on Saturday at the Euromarque Motorsport Park in Ruapuna. First
Neale (Van Diemen RF94) put his car on pole position winning the Hampton Downs NZ Racing Academy $500 cash prize for fastest qualifier with Dylan Grant (Van Diemen RF03) second quickest ahead of Dylan Petch (Van Diemen RF93)
Jack Noble-Adams (Ray GR21) and Izaak Fletcher (Ray GR20)
In the first of four races on Saturday afternoon
it was Grant that took the lead from Neale
it was Neale who crossed the line ahead of Grant and Petch
Grant reversed the top order winning the second race on Sunday morning and his first of his southern season
He took the lead after Neale bogged down on the line dropping to fourth and having to work his way through to second on the line
Petch finished third with Fletcher fourth ahead of Noble-Adams
The third race of the weekend had a dramatic conclusion for two of the top runners
denting both their overall title chances. While Neale initially took the lead
on the main straight Petch was able to get by on his right while Grant slipped passed on his left. However
they came together causing significant damage resulting in neither driver finishing and crucially no championship points
“We got a little bit lucky after both Dylan’s (Grant and Petch) came together,” said Neale. “It’s still very competitive as we saw in the last race when Dylan Petch got his car together and was quick out of the gate. I’ve been struggling with my starts all weekend which has been stressful.”
The final race of the weekend was the 12-lap Wigram Cup which saw Neale once again take the lead from Petch
Noble-Adams and Fletcher. Grant had been unable to make the start while Petch made it just in time
“The car wasn’t terrible,” said Petch. “Towards the end it was all over the place. It was a good outcome from a skewed car. We had to put green (new) tyres on it as we destroyed two of the rims in the crash. We didn’t really get a chance to pressure the tyres properly so we went high
and they came in pretty much bang on at the start but then eventually Will was able to create the gap.”
Neale led all the way to the chequered flag to etch his name on the Wigram Cup with Petch second ahead of Noble-Adams and Fletcher
“We got some good points although I would have preferred not to get the DNF (in Race 3),” said Petch. For his efforts Petch picked up the NAPA Auto Parts Driver of the Day Award
The South Island Formula Ford Club acknowledge the support from Team Hutchinson Ford
Available across the Formula Ford season is a $60,000 Formula Ford prize pool from the Tony Quinn Foundation with funding for travel and testing opportunities with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing NZ

Deputy chief health officer Annaliese van Diemen had faced demands for her resignation after posting a controversial tweet
Victoria’s deputy chief health officer did not breach the department’s code of conduct when she likened Covid-19 to Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia
But she has since been spoken to about the potential for social media use to undermine community trust in the public service and has deleted Twitter from her work phone

Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. Covid-19 or Cook 1770?” she tweeted.
Liberal backbencher James Newbury referred the tweet to the state’s public service watchdog, who released its investigation into the matter on Tuesday.
It found van Diemen did not breach the department of health’s code of conduct in posting in the tweet.
Department of health secretary Kym Peake said van Diemen was spoken to about the risks of social media use when working in the public sector.
“The risks of private use of social media when working in the public sector, and in particular when occupying a role that involves high profile public communication, have been discussed with Dr van Diemen,” said the letter from the Victorian Public Service Commission.
“In addition, Ms Peake has advised the commission that Dr van Diemen recognises the risk of diverting attention from the critical public health messages to the community and has subsequently removed her Twitter account from her phone.”
In a statement, the Department of Health said it would not be taking any formal disciplinary action.
“The department supports Dr van Diemen and the incredible role she has played and will continue to play, in fighting this virus,” a spokeswoman said.
The incident, however, has prompted a review of the department’s social media guidelines.
said van Diemen was doing an “exceptional job” in responding to the pandemic
“I don’t think that it’s a matter worthy of any great comment or scrutiny and certainly not criticism from the government,” he told reporters on Tuesday
Newbury said Dr van Diemen should apologise or delete the tweet
“A real sign of remorse would be to delete it,” he told 3AW
“Victorians shouldn’t be paying public servants to be leftwing political activists

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu told Parliament on Tuesday that the Stilfontein mine tragedy
in which 93 illegal miners died and nearly 2,000 were arrested
was a consequence of South Africa’s insecure borders
Calling illegal immigration a “huge problem”, the minister said: “The overall fundamental issue is border management”. He was addressing a joint meeting of Parliament’s portfolio committees on minerals and petroleum resources, and police.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Police top brass and officials from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources briefed the committees on illegal mining and derelict and ownerless mines
said a total of 944 police officers took part in the operation at Stilfontein from August 2024 up till March 2025 at a cost of R23-million for deployments and R9.8-million for overtime payments
Read more: Stilfontein mine rescue ends with 78 dead, 246 rescued and ringleaders in custody
Asaneng said the majority of the illegal miners were undocumented migrants
the people that came to the surface were Mozambicans
197; and one Congolese and one Malawian,” he said — a total of 1,826
illegal mining which is a criminal offence
for anybody to conduct mining you need a licence or a permit
“They must be permitted and these people were not permitted to be operating there, hence the police were leading the operation. They were also charged by Home Affairs for being in the country illegally, including for possession of gold-bearing material and unlawful possession of explosives that they used underground.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Asaneng told the committees that a “total of 93 corpses were retrieved”
He said that 640kg of gold-bearing material worth about R46-million and 6.2kg of refined gold worth R6-million was confiscated in addition to nearly half a million rands in cash
“All these dockets have since appeared before court” and 35 had been finalised
Police employed a “surrender or starve” strategy to force miners to surface in Stilfontein that aimed to “smoke them out”
according to Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni
Daily Maverick reported last month that according to the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (Macua)
at least 20 of the miners died of starvation and dehydration
The organisation appointed an independent pathologist to carry out autopsies on the dead miners

While the mine rescue operation has ended, the shaft is still being guarded by the police because of other crimes in the area.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Mchunu sought to underscore the points made by the SAPS top brass
“I would imagine that among issues that we have to deal with is border management.”
Referring to the illegal miners who had entered South Africa without documentation
“That alone is a huge problem and a huge challenge
It could have gone to mining and then we learn through illegal mining that there is this problem but it could have gone elsewhere
“Because it is clear it is not just a reflection of what’s happening in illegal mining
It could be there like this and it could be worse
The overall fundamental issue is border management.”
He urged the departments and Parliament to throw their weight behind security cluster efforts to address this “fundamental issue”
“This is what will be the consequence if we continue with borders that are leaking.” DM
Unfortunately everything is “a huge problem” when we have a government which is both useless and stealing from our people

Concerns persist at the RXL student housing complex in Diemen following reports of a suspicious individual
further raising fears and concerns among residents
reports surfaced about possible sexual assault and intimidation incidents around the housing complex
An anonymous student recently contacted NL Times to indicate that the residents still feel unsafe in and around the housing complex
In June, students informed NL Times that multiple serious sexual assault and harassment incidents allegedly took place within the Rode Kruislaan complex
About a thousand students live in the complex southeast of Amsterdam
A man reportedly chased women as they walked into their apartment building in May
the victim said she managed to break free from the man in a struggle
A police spokesperson confirmed NL Times at the time that two incidents were reported
including a “serious sexual incident” on May 9 in one of the buildings of the student complex and a report of a woman being harassed in another building of the complex during the night between May 26 and May 27
A student reaching out in late July complained that the situation had not changed
there were more “concerning” related incidents
The resident also said that residents received a letter from Liever De Key dated from July 25th
stating that there had been another incident presumably involving the same suspect
a spokesperson for Liever de Key confirmed
another incident took place at the beginning of July at the Rode Kruislaan
presumably with the same person.” The latest incident did not take place around the student complex but on the forest path towards the Diemen train station
A spokesperson for the Amsterdam police said that there were no reports of additional sexual assaults after June 1 but noted two reports of a “suspicious person.” The police have since taken safety measures without divulging specifics for security reasons
Liever de Key also informed NL Times that extra safety measures had been implemented
such as “improving cameras on the site and in the flats and additional patrols by the police,” the spokesperson said
The housing corporation also created a WhatsApp neighbourhood prevention group where residents can inform each other of suspicious situations
"There’s almost never any messages in it," said the resident who contacted NL Times
"I hope DeKey informs new residents that are just now moving in of the events that occurred this summer," the resident added
When asked about the prevailing sentiment within the housing complex
they are scared to return home alone late at night or after the sun sets."
“More media attention needs to be given to this situation
and the person needs to be caught,” the resident added
The much-vaunted plan to produce “green steel” in South Africa is off the cards for now and its role as a catalyst and anchor of domestic demand for green hydrogen in the country is at risk
This is according to both Sasol and ArcelorMittal South Africa who had explored the possibility of producing the steel in the Freeport Saldanha Industrial Development Zone in the Western Cape.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Daily Maverick previously reported that on day one of the Africa Energy Week conference in 2022
representatives of Sasol and ArcelorMittal signed a deal to investigate the feasibility of developing carbon capture technologies to produce sustainable fuels
Read more: Sasol and ArcelorMittal sign deal to look into feasibility of carbon capture and ‘green steel’
The now seemingly failed foray into green steel production represents a great loss to both South Africa’s efforts to mitigate its carbon footprint and to catalyse broader sustainable economic growth
According to ArcelorMittal’s Decarbonisation Roadmap 2023 report
in 2021 it envisaged Saldanha Works “initially producing lower carbon steel and
would be centred on Saldanha’s advanced Midrex plant (the only such plant in Africa)
The second leg of their roadmap, the authors of the report write, entailed the Conarc plant “being restarted as a scrap smelter (electric arc furnace) using renewable energy, for continuous casting and rolling”.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“Subject to regulatory and funding arrangements being made and affordable renewable energy and rail transport being secured
we suggested that Saldanha could produce 600,000 tons of steel per year by as early as 2023
we projected that Saldanha Works could account for South Africa’s largest single private-sector off-taker of green hydrogen
catalysing the development of a green hydrogen industry.”
Read more: Sasol and ArcelorMittal to breathe new life into SA’s West Coast economy with green hydrogen hub
To best understand what green steel is, one needs to understand how steel is currently produced. The International Energy Agency (IEA) explains that about 75% of steel is still largely made in coal-fired blast furnaces
which pump large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
Huge amounts of energy are also needed to heat the furnaces to above 1,000°C
Globally, the steel industry is responsible for roughly 2,6 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is about 8% of global emissions
When these coal-fired blast furnaces are replaced with ones that run on carbon emission-free green hydrogen
the steel that is produced is accordingly considered green steel
Asked for an update on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Alex Anderson, senior manager for group media relations and external communication at Sasol, said: “The partnership was an exploratory MOU, and based on those outcomes both parties chose to not pursue further as it wasn’t feasible.”advertisementDon't want to see this? About 3,500 jobs are set to be culled when ArcelorMittal South Africa stops steel production at the end of January at its operations in Newcastle and Vereeniging

ArcelorMittal notes that “Large amounts of clean energy are required to effectively decarbonise steel-making processes
Steel remains a crucial enabler to SA’s economy.”
In its Decarbonisation Roadmap 2023 report
ArcelorMittal optimistically suggests that “As a very large industrial concern
ArcelorMittal South Africa has the ability to catalyse the development of
a thriving domestic green hydrogen economy
one that creates significant employment by competing and exporting internationally
We can play an important role in driving such development by providing a large
it needs to be stressed that the financial viability of our renewables procurement will be influenced by Eskom/Nersa’s pricing structures,” the authors write
adding that: “The extent to which Eskom is able to green its electricity generation
and the pace at which it rolls out renewables
will have a bearing on our decarbonisation efforts
and those of most manufacturing industries.”
The Just Energy Transition Project Management Unit in the Presidency and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa told this reporter that: “Currently
grey hydrogen (from steam reformation of methane gas) costs $1.50/kg to produce
Green hydrogen produced via electrolysis of water using renewables-generated electricity costs $5 to $6/kg
Approximately 60% of this cost is for electricity
30% for electrolysers and 10% for transport
a reduction in price depends very much on renewable electricity generating costs falling still further
the appropriate pricing of carbon taxes is another factor that will contribute to project viability
“The costs of green electricity and of electrolysers will reduce
penalties in key global markets on goods produced using non-green technologies are ramping up over the next decade
We can anticipate that the right price point will be reached within the next few years
Based on the downward price trajectory of renewable energy and electrolyser costs
it has been projected that South Africa will reach $1.50/kg by 2037.” DM

Annaliese van Diemen’s tweeted analogy drew ire of state opposition MPs
Victoria’s deputy chief health officer, who drew a historical analogy between the arrivals of James Cook and Covid-19 to Australia, has been defended by the state government, which has praised her for doing “an outstanding job”.
Dr Annaliese van Diemen, public health physician and general practitioner, who holds degrees from Monash, Sydney and James Cook universities, tweeted:
“Sudden arrival of an invader from another land, decimating populations, creating terror. Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. COVID19 or Cook 1770?”
Sudden arrival of an invader from another land, decimating populations, creating terror. Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. COVID19 or Cook 1770?
Van Diemen was drawing an analogy between the arrival of Europeans in Australia in the late 18th century and the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
European explorers had been visiting the Australian continent since the 17th century, and Cook did not settle in Australia. But British settlement, led by Arthur Philip, followed Cook’s extensive mapping of Australia’s east coast.

said the tweet was embarrassing and inappropriate
“Daniel Andrews’ deputy chief health officer should be working on giving Victorians a pathway out of Labor’s lockdown
not giving us woke political commentary on Twitter,” he said in a statement
“No wonder many Victorians are questioning why our lockdown has no end in sight: the government is too busy playing politics on Twitter.”
Senator for Tasmania (known as Van Diemen’s Land until 1856) Eric Abetz suggested van Diemen (the Victorian doctor
not the erstwhile governor general of the Dutch East Indies) read historian Geoffrey Blainey
and “stick to the task at hand” of suppressing the pandemic
“I’m sure her medical expertise is exceptional
Her attempt in the discipline of history would be hysterical if she didn’t expect to be treated seriously
non-relevant attempted analogy may enhance her ‘wokeness’ credentials amongst the few but will leave the vast majority of Australians demanding a focus by her on the urgent task at hand,” he said
said the deputy chief health officer was “doing an outstanding job protecting Victorians from this deadly pandemic”
“Criticism from angry MPs is irrelevant to the fight against this virus.”

At least two women at the RXL student housing complex in Diemen have reported incidents of serious sexual assault and harassment in recent weeks
raising fears and concerns among other residents
The incidents have been reported to criminal investigators
The incidents involved female residents living in the complex on Rode Kruislaan
which is managed by the housing corporation Lieven de Key
Women were reportedly chased by a man as they walked into their apartment building in May
She said several other frightening incidents have also happened both in and around the complex
"But not necessarily sexual in nature," she noted
Another student who contacted NL Times separately said that at least one student repeatedly reported safety concerns
residents felt as if police "refused to investigate."
A police spokesperson confirmed that two incidents were reported
including a “serious sexual incident” on May 9 in one of the buildings of the student complex
The police also received a report of a woman being harassed in another building of the complex during the overnight period from May 26 to May 27
The police are now trying to determine if the two cases are related
The police spokesperson could not confirm information about additional incidents
saying that records showed that only the two cases mentioned were reported to them
She said that extra measures have been taken
such as increased surveillance in the area
The neighborhood police officer has also been in contact with residents about the incidents
residents also expressed concerns about broken locks in the student complex
"It’s a super common thing in our building," Akriti explained
While the lock is not defective when examined visually
who studies Politics and Media at the University of Amsterdam
said the atmosphere has changed since reports of these incidents
adding that women in particular now feel unsafe in the complex
but you're scared of everyone on the street," she added."
Measures have been taken by a few female residents
Many intentionally return home before sunset
or refuse to take set foot into an elevator with someone they do not know
A WhatsApp group has also been created so that people can report when they arrive home at night
allowing others from the building to pick them up
“There is strong female solidarity; we need to look out for each other,” she said
She regrets these measures had to be taken
“I should be allowed to go out at any time.”
She told NL Times that the housing association first contacted the residents on June 6
expressed that they felt unsafe in and around the buildings of the student complex
A police officer was present during the meeting
as they were primarily told what they could do to feel safer
but they make us feel like it's our responsibility to take care of it.”
housing corporation Lieven de Key expressed their “shock” at these incidents
A spokesperson mentioned that even though cameras are installed at the entrances and lifts
the recent events may trigger a re-evaluation of the current lighting arrangement to enhance safety measures
He also emphasized that the building manager maintains a presence in the complex's office four days a week
“Residents can contact him with all their questions.”
Akriti said she believes these efforts fall short
as she feels residents are not being taken seriously
she felt a dismissive attitude from the police when people called to report what was happening
“Dutch police need sensitivity training,” she said
Akriti expressed her belief that this perceived insensitivity could be a deterrent for women when considering whether to report incidents to the police
The police spokesperson expressed regret upon hearing that residents of the complex did not feel they were being taken seriously
and emphasized that both incidents were “taken very seriously.” She also wanted to point out that not only possible victims but also people who know more about the incidents
"We are calling on everyone to come forward and share their stories,” she said
