outside to analyze any materials seized during the search Two prosecutors on site confirmed the raid was part of the ongoing criminal investigation “We are looking for information,” one said “It’s not unusual for this to happen in a case like this A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service told AD that the search was connected to the case but declined to specify what was being sought Searches are typically carried out when there are grounds to believe that evidence is being withheld Chemours acknowledged the raid but gave few details “Chemours received an unannounced visit from the authorities today,” a company spokesperson said The criminal investigation began after environmental attorney Bénédicte Ficq filed a formal complaint in June 2023 on behalf of five residents living near the Dordrecht facility The complaint accuses Chemours’ current and former executives of “deliberately introducing dangerous substances into the environment,” a charge that carries a prison sentence of 12 to 15 years under Dutch law That complaint has since grown into a broader case with approximately 1,600 individuals now listed as co-filers Ficq said Tuesday’s raid signaled that prosecutors are taking the case seriously “The health interests of local residents are clearly being taken seriously by the Public Prosecution Service,” she told AD “I’m very curious about the outcome of the investigation.” The legal action seeks to hold executives personally liable for knowingly releasing toxic substances into the surrounding area The complaint alleges that Chemours and its predecessor continued to emit harmful chemicals for decades despite knowing the health risks The case gained national attention following a 2023 broadcast by Dutch investigative program Zembla which revealed that DuPont—now operating as Chemours—possessed hundreds of internal documents showing it had known since the 1960s about the dangers of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) a group of synthetic chemicals used in manufacturing Those documents reportedly show that DuPont knew as far back as the 1990s that it was contaminating groundwater beneath and around the factory with PFAS The company also remained silent for decades about the risks of PFOA a specific PFAS compound linked to cancer and reproductive issues Chemours has long been the focus of public criticism and lawsuits related to its use of PFAS in producing items such as nonstick cookware coatings this marks the first time the company has been targeted in a criminal investigation News of the raid was welcomed by local residents and environmental activists “I cried with joy when I heard the police were raiding the place,” she told AD They don’t raid for sweaty feet—it costs too much money FC Dordrecht become A new pressure-relief plate will be installed, and the company plans to carry out further investigations throughout the day. According to a statement from the company, the leak was brief, and the cause has not yet been definitively determined. The environmental watchdog, DCMR, has not dispatched a team to the site, as the emission took place quickly, and the cause remains undetermined. DCMR has requested Chemours to provide an update on the situation by 3:00 PM on Tuesday, including a report on the cause of the leak. Despite the brevity of the emission, the release of tetrafluoroethylene is a serious concern due to its potential health impacts. Tetrafluoroethylene is a colorless, odorless gas used in the production of several products, including Teflon. While its immediate health effects can include dizziness, headaches, visual disturbances, suffocation, and loss of consciousness, prolonged exposure can lead to more severe health consequences. Exposure to tetrafluoroethylene can have significant short-term effects on human health. Increased exposure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, vision issues, suffocation, and a loss of consciousness. Prolonged exposure is more concerning, as research has shown that tetrafluoroethylene is a potential carcinogen. A hedgehog was found impaled on a flagstick, with swastikas drawn in the sand nearby. The incident has left golf course staff and local authorities shocked. Peter Bolleurs, 35, a greenkeeper at the golf course, described the scene as horrifying. He was notified by a colleague who came across the mutilated hedgehog during her rounds on the course. “The photos she sent me were beyond anything I ever expected to see,” said Bolleurs. “The poor animal was brutally attacked and left on the flagstick, covered in sand and blood. My colleague was completely shaken.” The condition of the hedgehog suggested severe suffering before its death. “This is absolutely sickening,” Bolleurs said. “Whoever did this must have no regard for life.” Bolleurs noted that this was not the first time the course had been targeted by vandals. “Parts of the course are open to the public, and we’ve had issues with vandalism before. But this... this is something else. It keeps getting worse,” he said. While the golf course has surveillance cameras in restricted areas, the public parts of the property remain unmonitored. Bolleurs expressed frustration over the lack of security measures. “We really need cameras here, but the public nature of this part of the course complicates things,” he said. The golf course management confirmed the incident and corroborated Bolleurs’ account but declined to comment further. Staff found potential evidence near the site, including dog tracks. However, Bolleurs dismissed the idea that dogs could be responsible for the hedgehog’s injuries. “Dogs don’t do this. Whoever did this is a person, and they need to be found,” he said. Authorities are investigating the incident, but no suspects have been identified yet. The use of swastikas, drawn near the scene, has raised concerns about possible ideological motives behind the attack. The shocking nature of the act has reignited calls for harsher penalties for animal cruelty. The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of laws and for jail sentences in cases of severe abuse. “This is not just vandalism; this is a violent act against a defenseless animal,” a spokesperson for the organization said. the platform’s current direction and the club’s core values. In a public statement released yesterday, the Dutch second division club made it clear: “We no longer want to be associated with this platform.” “The acquisition of the X network by xAI (a company owned by Elon Musk) has changed the character and content of this platform,” the statement read. “At FC Dordrecht, respect, inclusion, and reliability are core values. We do not want to be associated with a platform where these values are being tested.” Dordrecht confirmed that all communication will now move to other social media platforms, following the same path taken by three German clubs — St. Pauli, Hertha Berlin, and Werder Bremen — who abandoned X earlier this year for similar political and ethical reasons. All three German sides have since shifted their communication to BlueSky, a decentralized social media alternative. This marks a new chapter in the growing movement among European football clubs distancing themselves from Elon Musk’s controversial platform. While X remains a central hub for global football discourse, its evolving moderation policies and ownership ties have sparked increasing discomfort — especially among clubs that place high value on social responsibility and inclusion. FC Dordrecht’s exit is symbolic — a relatively small club taking a strong moral stance in an increasingly complex digital environment. Swimming in lake Merwelanden in Dordrecht is now permitted again, as measurements showed that the PFAS concentrations are far below the RIVM's advice values. Over a year ago, the province of Zuid-Holland gave negative swimming advice for the lake, which is close to the Chemours factory. After additional "flushing" of the lake, Waterschap Hollandse Delta determined that the PFAS values have dropped significantly, and the province has withdrawn the negative advice. "We are pleased that we have succeeded in reducing the PFAS concentrations to well below the RIVM limit value and that people can swim responsibly in the lake again this summer," says provincial executive Arne Weverling. "This is very good news, especially if you are not going on holiday or cannot go to the swimming pools," adds Dordrecht alderman Tanja de Jonge. But there is still work to be done. "We need to investigate further where the PFAS comes from, and it needs to be cleaned up because we are talking about the health of residents here." Swimming in the lake is possible until September 30, the end of the swimming season. Until then, the water will be flushed. Meanwhile, the investigation into the source of the pollution continues. Once that is done, further steps will follow if necessary. Chemours has previously promised to contribute to the cleaning of the Merwelandenplas. The municipalities of Dordrecht, Papendrecht, Sliedrecht, and Molenlanden have held the plastics manufacturer liable for the pollution of the groundwater by PFAS on their territory. The judge considers this proven for at least the period between 1984 and 1998. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. Hundreds of people participated in a protest march against Chemours in Dordrecht. They want the chemical factory, located along the Beneden-Merwede river, to stop emitting PFAS. The protesters walked from the Oranjepark in Dordrecht via the De Staart district to the Baanhoekweg where Chemours is located. Earlier in the day, local residents had emptied buckets of contaminated soil and water in front of the factory gate for the 219th time. They have been doing this every Saturday morning for years. "Chemours is doing everything it can to make as much money as possible at all costs," the organization of the protest march said. "Health plays no role in this. And they pull out all the stops: not providing transparent information to governments, not taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions." The activists want Chemours to stop all discharges, clean up the pollution it has caused, and pay all costs for health research and water treatment. They also believe that the company should compensate local residents who have suffered damage from PFAS emissions. Before the march, Chemours said in a statement: "We listen to the opinions and concerns that people express about our factory. This is done not only through demonstrations but also in direct contact. And we are always open to a conversation," the chemical factory said. "The conversations show that we ultimately share the same goal: reducing our emissions as far as possible." The factory has been in Dordrecht since the 1960s, previously under DuPont. For years, the company emitted large quantities of substances that fall under the collective name PFAS. Some of these are dangerous to people and the environment. Chemours says it has significantly reduced emissions in recent years. According to the company, it produces "essential materials" responsibly, including for medical care and the energy transition. Take part in our reader survey By 2023-10-06T12:33:00+01:00 Interim decision holds DuPont spin-off liable for environmental damage caused by historical emissions from Dordrecht plant Chemours will be held accountable for environmental damage in the Netherlands caused by releases of dangerous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) between 1984 and at least 1998 the Dutch district court in Rotterdam ruled in an interim decision on 27 September This civil case involves releases from a plant in Dordrecht A civil court has deemed Chemours liable for emissions dating back to when the Dordrecht plant was run by its progenitor company Chemours said it is ‘currently studying’ the interim ruling while stressing the importance of looking beyond this judgment ‘Irrespective of any potential future legal processes we would like to find a way to take (concrete) action towards our environment sooner We hear the concerns of residents near our location in Dordrecht and they affect us,’ the company said in a statement ‘These actions will focus on mapping out an approach and on providing technical and financial support,’ the company added noting for example the potential of a fund with which the municipalities involved can finance such activities which will include a determination about Chemours and its predecessor DuPont’s culpability for PFAS pollution after 1998 ‘Apart from the possibility to appeal that decision a separate case will be needed in order to determine any damages,’ the company stated On its website, Chemours says it takes its obligation to manage PFAS compounds in a responsible manner ‘very seriously’ The company says it has committed to eliminate at least 99% of PFAS air and water emissions from its manufacturing processes by 2030 Chemours reports investing €75 million (£65 million) towards reducing these releases by more than 99% compared to 2017 baseline levels with significant milestones expected to be achieved in 2024 a criminal class action lawsuit against was filed against Chemours in the Netherlands on 4 September reportedly on behalf of at least 2700 people living near the Dordrecht plant and in other municipalities The suit apparently accuses Chemours and DuPont of knowingly discharging dangerous PFAS into the local environment since the early 1960s and seeks a criminal investigation of Chemours as well as the possible prosecution of former executives Chemours said it doesn’t know the contents of that criminal filing but understands that it seeks an investigation of the company by the public prosecutor mostly to help remediate PFAS contamination in the Flanders region The backside of a late-19th-century Dutch church gets a new life today with the official unveiling of a massive and provocative glass-and-bronze sculpture from Studio Job, the contemporary design studio known for its whimsical, diabolical riffs on European art and objects Studio Job's new bronze and glass piece for the Kunstkerk weighs in at 10,000 kilograms Jeroen Musch The three curvaceous windows—which wrap around each other in something like a group hug—contain figures suggesting Christ on the cross, an infant Jesus, St Joseph, and the Virgin Mary, along with flowing decorative depictions of bees, rockets, worms, padlocks, human sperm cells, and something or other by Louis Vuitton. Commissioned by Dordrecht's Foundation Kunstkerk, the sculpture will serve as the calling card and public face for the transformed Protestant church building, which is being relaunched as an exhibition space and cultural centre called Kunstkerk, or art church. The couple eventually split. Tynagel left behind her creative duties in 2015, and Smeets, who lives between Italy and Belgium, expanded his studio, now numbering around 30, while starting a new family. Speaking about The Embrace this week in Dordrecht just after the scaffolding came off, Smeets, 51, preferred to avoid specifics when explaining Studio Job’s signature graphic style, which cross-pollinates scurrilous motifs with traditional forms. Is that rather devilish-looking baby in the centre window indeed the Baby Jesus? “Could be,” says Smeets, who says it is also a reference to his two-year-old son, Elvis, or, as Smeets calls him, “my Baby Jesus.” The artist Job Smeets says the devilish-looking child in The Embrace "could be" intended as a "Baby Jesus" Jeroen Musch The work’s manifest religious connotations may in fact be a kind of colossal red herring, suggests Smeets, who says his real subject here “is family". He later admits that the figure of the Virgin Mary, who happens to wearing a bomber jacket, is based on his partner and the mother of his two young children, Studio Job’s Rebecca Sharkey. The windows include images of power plants and stethoscopes, along with butterflies and roses, but Smeets says he regards The Embrace as “very classical", by which he actually means "contemporary".   “Hundreds of years ago, the stained glass windows of those old churches were set in a contemporary landscape,” he says, deferring to the typical blending of biblical scenes with depictions of benefactors in what was then modern Europe dress. “And that’s what I do.” news16 May 2023The transformed Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts reopens in Little RockStudio Gang’s ambitious renovation revitalises a historic cultural institution news10 December 2021'Heart of Matisse': new study centre dedicated to Modern master opens at Baltimore Museum of ArtUS museum builds a permanent research space for its "crown jewel"—more than 1,200 works by Henri Matisse news27 February 2020Semperbau museum in Dresden, home to Vermeer's hidden cupid painting, reopens after €49m renovationThe 19th-century palace is returning to the idea of showing sculpture alongside its Old Masters Sign InJoinGo Ahead Eagles bring in FC Dordrecht’s Belgian star | OneFootballGet Belgian & Dutch Football News Go Ahead Eagles have announced the signing of Mathis Suray from FC Dordrecht for the 2024/2025 season The 22-year-old Belgian midfielder has been a star player for the second division side this campaign with 13 goals and six assists in 38 matches The club are currently competing in the promotion play-offs in the second tier and drew their first leg with FC Emmen 2-2 Suray grabbed a goal and put in a man of the match display away from home The Belgian began his career with Charleroi and then moved to Anderlecht’s youth team He never made an appearance for the senior side moving across the border to the Netherlands in 2020 heh as made 118 appearances for Dordrecht and scored 20 goals He has also provided 14 assists in that time Suray has signed a contract with Go Ahead Eagles until 2027 GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson Related NewsGo Ahead Eagles v AZ Alkmaar preview: Go Ahead Eagles and AZ Alkmaar go head-to-head in cup final repeat Crystal Palace: Oliver Glasner provides Adam Wharton latest after injury scare ahead of Man City FA Cup final Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Eberechi Eze scores as Eagles get ready to peak in FA Cup final Fofana forced off in first half vs Genoa, but Milan optimistic ahead of Coppa Italia final Pulisic: Milan need to ‘keep momentum going’ against Genoa ahead of Coppa Italia final Adrian Segecic has joined the Dutch Eerste Divisie club FC Dordrecht on a season-long loan from Sydney FC The 19-year-old’s story is being chronicled as part of The Athletic’s My Football Journey: The Road to the 2026 World Cup series with Segecic’s first taste of European football considered a critical stage in the young attacking midfielder’s development “This is a great chance to improve and develop my ability in a different country and to continue my education in a different culture and new settings,” said the teenager “Dutch football is amongst the most progressive and forward thinking in the world and I’m sure I will return a better player and person from the experience.” Segecic joined the Sydney academy in 2016 and has made 28 senior appearances for the club a mainstay of the Under-20s set-up who reached the quarter-finals of the junior AFC Championship earlier this year signed a three-year contract with Sydney FC at the start of last season and follows a well-trodden path of the Australian club’s players being offered the chance to gain experience in Europe who have former Sydney FC centre-half Pascal Bosschaart as assistant manager and run a player partnership with Feyenoord are winless to date this term in the Dutch second tier having claimed two points from their three matches “A year in Holland, learning to play in a different environment and in a new league, will be a fantastic experience for Adrian which can only be good for him and for Sydney FC,” said the Australian club’s head coach “I’m certain he will return a better player having the chance of consistent first team football and it is something we will reap the rewards from next season.” My Football Journey: 'Missing the last penalty for my country was tough' You currently use an outdated internet browser.
