According to municipal and provincial authorities
the contamination poses no immediate danger to drinking water in the region
“The groundwater and surface water near the airport
do not come into contact with drinking water supplies,” a statement from Tynaarlo and the Province of Drenthe confirmed
“No food product is under stricter control than drinking water,” they emphasized
a group of over 6,000 human-made chemicals
and grease-resistant properties and have been used in a variety of industries
have been banned due to their harmful environmental and health effects
The Environment Service Drenthe is conducting an investigation into the contamination
which reportedly stems from firefighting foam that historically contained high levels of PFAS
The local authorities are working closely with GGD Drenthe
and Waterbedrijf Groningen to understand the full extent of the contamination and its long-term effects
and their environmental impact are all subjects of ongoing research
Residents near the airport are advised not to use water from the Bongveentje or the surrounding ditches for irrigation
The authorities also caution against allowing animals to drink from or swim in these waters
and they recommend refraining from eating fish caught in the area
Although there is currently no acute health threat
officials are urging the community to avoid using the water for any purpose until further investigations are completed
PFAS was detected in the soil and groundwater near the former fire station at the airport
Groningen Airport Eelde has developed a remediation plan
which is under review by the Province of Drenthe
the Noorderzijlvest Water Board has found PFAS contamination in the Runsloot
a canal located at the end of the airport’s runway
and further investigation is underway to determine its cause
the municipality of Tynaarlo has announced it will host an informational meeting for residents of the Eelde area
locals will have the opportunity to ask questions about the PFAS contamination and the steps being taken to resolve the issue
Groningen Airport Eelde in the Netherlands has announced a collaboration with New Energy Coalition to make the airport one of the most sustainable in Europe through the use of hydrogen technology
which looks to develop sustainability innovations together with educational institutions
the business community and government authorities
the airport’s ambition is to produce green hydrogen on-site and deploy it for innovative applications on both groundside and airside
“The New Energy Coalition Foundation connects parties to create collaborations that speed up the transition to a sustainable energy economy
we can now also include air transport in the Hydrogen Valley
This is a very valuable addition and strengthens the position of the Hydrogen Valley
the testing ground for hydrogen development in the Northern Netherlands
We will be deploying our knowledge and network to help Groningen Airport Eelde achieve their ambition of becoming Europe’s most sustainable hydrogen-powered airport.”
A solar park with a capacity of 21.9MW has already been built by GroenLeven between the runway
platform and taxiway at Groningen Airport Eelde and the company plans to use electrolysis to produce green hydrogen at the airport
This green hydrogen will then be used for a multi-fuel filling station
trucks and regional buses will be able to refuel
the station will serve ground handling equipment
hydrogen drones and hydrogen-powered aircraft in the future
Groningen Airport Eelde’s ground handling aims to be emission-free by 2030 and the airport is working with Holthausen Clean Technology to convert existing equipment and develop innovative hydrogen-powered ground equipment
Mobility - Groningen Airport Eelde is making the transition to emission-free aviation
It won't be long before we are flying electrically within Europe and on hydrogen to America and Asia
Electric flights are a sustainable and economically feasible alternative to regular flights
are going to start flying electrically and want to test whether regions in Europe can be connected to each other by means of small planes
“Electric flights are going to become the competitor of the car”
The plans for emission-free flights at Groningen Airport Eelde are progressing fast
The airport is part of the Power Up initiative to explore electric aviation and is collaborating with Maastricht Aachen Airport
Eindhoven Airport and Rotterdam The Hague Airport
De Groot answered five questions about the transition to emission-free aviation
“I see it as a kind of bus stop with connections throughout Europe
The electric flights will complement the train connections that link up major cities
You can deploy electric flights in places where there are fewer people
I think it will eventually become the competitor to the car.”
Maastricht Aachen Airport joined the Power Up initiative
This is especially important nowadays given that we are facing a major challenge
The climate is under pressure and passengers feel embarrassed about flying
We can do something about this together.”
“We should be able to do this within five to ten years
The Eindhoven University and also institutions in the north of the Netherlands have done research into batteries and mobility
cars will be able to drive 1000 kilometers without recharging
it should be possible to offer electric flights by 2030.”
Research into feasibility of electric aviationResearch carried out in recent months by a project team from the PEN EM Foundation and M3 Consultancy
in collaboration with Groningen Airport Eelde and NewEnergyCoalition
has shown that electric aviation is possible in the near future
battery-electric aircraft with approximately 9 to 19 seats will be able to carry out flights of over 500 km
it is expected that hydrogen-powered flights will replace fossil-powered flights
will also reach destinations such as Spain with zero emissions
the sector is relying on synthetic fuel made from hydrogen and carbon monoxide
among other thing.”Besides the fact that flights on electricity and hydrogen are sustainable
there are also some advantages when it comes to noise pollution as well: “Moreover
tests with the first electric aircraft engines show that noise levels are so much lower
Which means that electric aircraft will hardly be heard outside the airport area
These gains are achieved in part because the propellers are able to rotate at lower speeds and more propellers can be used.”
“It is not possible to operate flights on long-haul routes on electricity
Airbus has predicted that they will start to fly on hydrogen by around 2040/2050
We are also working on our own plans here at Airport Eelde
We are able to generate hydrogen using our own solar farm.”
we do that with the help of our own solar panels
The idea is to set up a kind of ecosystem revolving around hydrogen
We want to use hydrogen not only for flights but also for handling things around the airport
We also want to involve other companies in the vicinity in the ecosystem
There is a water treatment company opposite the airport that needs oxygen to purify water
and we can give that same oxygen away to the water treatment company.”
There are an incredible number of laws and regulations in aviation
I think it’s very important that the government parties
The government wants to be at the forefront when it comes to electric aviation
but it obviously costs a great deal and in recent years I haven’t seen much happening
I think it’s time that the new coalition agreement states that a bigger budget should be made available for this.”

The design responds to this by, on the one hand, embracing the classical typology and, on the other hand, developing the new living demands. A layer of wooden blinds covers both interior and exterior spaces: A house is situated within a wooden barn. By creating covered exterior spaces at essential positions within this layer, a subtle transition from interior to exterior is created (ensuring privacy and comfort), without abandoning the prominent image of the Drenthe barn.
In this way, the new art of living is seamlessly incorporated into the classical countryside, and the visual character of the countryside remains intact. The wooden layer consists of large shutters or arched doors, which can be manipulated at will to regulate privacy and protection from the sun. In this way, a lively image is created, harkening back to the old farm dynamic: The farm’s appearance is still changing due to the effects of usage.
The plan also envelops a landscape design
which manifests and brings to life the transition from nature to culture
The barn house is placed on a large wooden platform on the border of the designed garden and the agricultural countryside
acting as a connecting element of the land’s old and new functions
naturally anchoring the history of the countryside’s changing function at this location

Lelystad Airport is currently the Ministry of Defense’s first choice for expanding its fighter jet capacity
Research has shown that practicing with the F-35 fighter jets in Lelystad would cause the least noise nuisance for locals
State Secretary Gijs Tuisman announced on Thursday
but only if holiday flights can also finally start operating from the airport
“We have really looked at all possible locations. We are looking at various criteria such as nature and housing. But the most important is how much nuisance it causes for local residents,” State Secretary Tuinman told Omroep Flevoland
The Defense sector will have to practice more
but the Ministry is trying to be as considerate as possible about it
Defense wants to add 2,300 additional F-35 take-offs and landings to its current available space of 5,200 flight movements per year
The Ministry’s first choice is for all 2,300 flight movements to happen at one location
but two locations with 1,150 flight movements each are also an option
The Ministry is also looking at the former De Peel air base on the border of Noord-Brabant and Limburg and Groningen Eelde Airport near the border of Drenthe and Groningen
The municipality of Lelystad will only consider fighter jets at Lelystad Airport if the airport also opens to holiday flights, alderman Dennis Grimbergen told the regional broadcaster
The arrival of the F-35s also must not hinder economic development in the region
The provincial government of Flevoland agrees
Allowing fighter jets is only negotiable if the airport also opens for wholesale traffic
The airport told the broadcaster that it has been in contact with the Ministry of Defense and it is not clear whether the airport is suitable for the fighter jets
“Lelystad Airport is set up for its current activities and for commercial trade in the future
Further research by the Ministry of Defense must determine whether Lelystad Airport is a suitable location.”
"It is crystal clear to us: it is non-negotiable
Fighter jets at Eelde would ask too much of our residents."
Limburg has never been in favor of reopening De Peel Air Base. The provincial government and the surrounding municipalities in Limburg and Oost-Brabant are all against the idea, L1 reported
Exclusive: Researchers say Covid-19 hiatus is moment to tackle elite ‘super emitters’
Frequent-flying “‘super emitters” who represent just 1% of the world’s population caused half of aviation’s carbon emissions in 2018
Airlines produced a billion tonnes of CO2 and benefited from a $100bn (£75bn) subsidy by not paying for the climate damage they caused
The analysis draws together data to give the clearest global picture of the impact of frequent fliers
Only 11% of the world’s population took a flight in 2018 and 4% flew abroad
US air passengers have by far the biggest carbon footprint among rich countries
Its aviation emissions are bigger than the next 10 countries combined
The researchers said the study showed that an elite group enjoying frequent flights had a big impact on the climate crisis that affected everyone
Read moreGlobal aviation’s contribution to the climate crisis was growing fast before the Covid-19 pandemic, with emissions jumping by 32% from 2013-18
Flight numbers in 2020 have fallen by half but the industry expects to return to previous levels by 2024
“If you want to resolve climate change and we need to redesign [aviation]
where a few ‘super emitters’ contribute massively to global warming,” said Stefan Gössling at Linnaeus University in Sweden
“The rich have had far too much freedom to design the planet according to their wishes. We should see the crisis as an opportunity to slim the air transport system.”
at the International Council on Clean Transportation and not part of the research team
said the analysis raised the question of equality
“The benefits of aviation are more inequitably shared across the world than probably any other major emission source,” he said
“So there’s a clear risk that the special treatment enjoyed by airlines just protects the economic interests of the globally wealthy.”
The frequent flyers identified in the study travelled about 35,000 miles (56,000km) a year
equivalent to three long-haul flights a year
The analysis showed the US produced the most emissions among rich nations
China was the biggest among other countries but it does not make data available
Gössling thinks its aviation footprint is probably only a fifth of that of the US
North Americans flew 50 times more kilometres than Africans in 2018
10 times more than those in the Asia-Pacific region and 7.5 times more than Latin Americans
Europeans and those in the Middle East flew 25 times further than Africans and five times more than Asians
The data also showed a large growth in international flights from 1990-2017
with numbers tripling from Australia and doubling from the UK
The researchers estimated the cost of the climate damage caused by aviation’s emissions at $100bn in 2018
The absence of payments to cover this damage “represents a major subsidy to the most affluent”
“This highlights the need to scrutinise the sector
The figure for the social cost of carbon emissions was actually a bit conservative
A levy on frequent fliers is one proposal to discourage flights
“Somebody will need to pay to decarbonise flight – why shouldn’t it be frequent flyers?” Rutherford said
pointing out that frequent flyers were usually very wealthy
meaning higher ticket prices may not deter them
Read moreA spokesman for the International Air Transport Association (Iata)
said: “The charge of elitism may have had some foundation in the 1950s and 1960s
But today air travel is a necessity for millions.”
He said the airline industry paid $94bn in direct taxes
such as income tax in 2019 and $42bn in indirect taxes such as VAT
“We remain committed to our environmental goals,” the Iata spokesman said
“This year – in the teeth of the greatest crisis ever facing our industry – airlines agreed to explore pathways to how we could move to net zero emissions by around 2060.”
“I think they have a zero interest in climate change,” Gössling said
Other research by Gössling found that half of leisure flights were not considered important by the traveller
“A lot of travel is going on just because it’s cheap.”
He stopped flying for holidays in 1995 and more recently stopped going to academic conferences and taking long-haul flights

The Dutch military is investigating whether fighter aircraft can jointly use the civil airports in Eelde
the Ministry of Defense announced on Friday
the military will need much more space in the coming years
the ministry presented plans for expansion
These included additional ammunition storage places
and more options for low-flying helicopters
The ministry received over 2,200 responses to the plans
About a fifth of the questions were about areas where fighter jets fly overhead
The Defense Ministry answered some of those questions on Friday
The shared use of civilian airports is one option
and the ministry is investigating the possibility at the three airports
The airports in Rotterdam and Maastricht are ruled out because flight movements already cause a lot of disruption there
The ministry may also expand exiting air bases like Leeuwarden
People are mainly concerned about the impact on quality of life and health if more flight movements take place
They also want to know whether they can expect compensation if there are more fighter jets in the area
The ministry will conduct a study into the health effects of more flying
The armed forces need more space to train and practice sufficiently
The plans could also have consequences for housing
The military is also looking for an additional location for large-scale ammunition storage in Flevloand
and Drenthe for ammunition storage capacity that can be deployed quickly
The Army also wants to concentrate units in the center of the country

March was the busiest month with nearly 43 thousand commercial flights (i.e
Nearly 6 million passengers were carried in that month
Most air traffic in the Netherlands passes through Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
the number of flights at Schiphol was 18.5 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year (108 thousand)
The number of passengers using Schiphol went up by 17.4 percent to 14.4 million
the second busiest airport in the Netherlands is Eindhoven Airport
Eindhoven Airport also ranked second in the number of passengers transported
that was 8.7 percent of total passengers travelling to and from airports in the Netherlands and also slightly more than in Q1 2023
Of the three other airports in the country
the number of flights and passengers carried to and from Rotterdam The Hague in Q1 2024 was slightly less than in Q1 2023
both in the number of flights (up 7.5 percent) and the number of passengers handled (up 6.1 percent)
It should be noted that Groningen Airport Eelde has the lowest number of flights and passengers carried
Maastricht Aachen Airport remains quiet following its temporary closure in May and June 2023 for runway maintenance work
goods are only transported by air through the airports of Amsterdam Schiphol and Maastricht Aachen
The increase in air cargo transport to and from the Netherlands
from 348 thousand tonnes in Q1 2023 to 383 thousand tonnes in Q1 2024

That amounted to 377 thousand tonnes of cargo in Q1 2024
A total of 6.7 thousand tonnes of cargo passed through Maastricht Airport
That was 47.7 percent less than in the previous year

Regional airports can take over at least 35 flights from Schiphol in the coming weekend
Rotterdam The Hague Airport is taking over 11 flights
Eindhoven Airport offered to take over eight flights on Saturday and Sunday
Groningen Airport Eelde expects to be able to handle at least 16 extra flights on the two weekend days
Six flights from tour operator Corendon and four from TUI will move to Rotterdam
Transavia is moving one departing flight from Schiphol to Rotterdam The Hague Airport
has room to handle one or two extra flights per hour for a short period
"That comes down to 8 to 16 flights a day," explained a spokeswoman for Groningen Eelde Airport
Space is more limited in Eindhoven because it is already busy there due to the May holidays
Maastricht Aachen Airport also has room to take over flights from Schiphol but cannot yet give concrete numbers
Schiphol is trying to prevent unmanageable crowds and is consulting with airlines about a solution, with the emphasis on rescheduling flights. The country's largest airport is struggling with staff shortages in security and baggage and passenger handling. Last weekend, Schiphol asked airlines to cancel bookings so that the departure halls would not be overcrowded
That is not yet on the agenda for this weekend
although the airport didn't rule it out entirely either
How many flights can divert from Schiphol to other airports depends on various factors
[video: https://www.cbs.nl/en-gb/video/bd3537f13d26435b99ab20309818d86a]
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol welcomed another record number of passengers: 68.4 million
The number of arrivals and departures has seen year-on-year growth since 2009
Aircraft movements (take-offs and landings) increased by 3.7 percent to nearly 497 thousand in 2017
This is just below the maximum ceiling set by the Alders Platform covenant dating from 2008
which stipulates that Schiphol Airport can only have a maximum of 500 thousand movements per year until 2020
The fact that passenger numbers are rising more rapidly than the number of movements is explained by the use of larger aircraft and a higher seat occupancy rate per flight
With an average temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius
last month was the coldest April since 1986
The average temperature lay 3.2 degrees below the norm of 9.9 degrees in April
The drop in temperatures was particularly evident in Drenthe
Eelde in Drenthe recorded a total of 18 frost days in April
The village also measured the lowest temperatures nationwide last month
temperatures fell to minus 4.5 degrees Celsius
Temperatures had even been higher in February this year compared to April 2021
higher than the warmest temperature in April at 17.8 degrees in certain areas
The chilly weather allowed for a total of ten snow days in at least one part of the country
there are only about 2.5 snow days in the fourth month of the year
It is the first time since 1977 there have been as many reports of snow in the Netherlands in April
The weather became considerably sunnier during the second part of last April
the sun shone for 30 more hours than normal last month
it was the sunniest with a total of 255 sun hours
Slightly more than 20 million passengers went through Schiphol airport in Q3
passenger traffic still showed limited growth at 0.2 percent
This is due to the fact that the total number of movements must not exceed 500 thousand per year
the number of movements declined by 1 percent year-on-year
The report is based on the experiences of the rescue services involved - the Coast Guard, KNRM, rescue helicopters, Noordgat shipping company, Noord Nederland Control Room, Veiligheidsregio Groningen, and salvager Multraship. Despite the confusion, they managed to rescue 23 crew members from the ship, which ended up burning for days on end. One crew member died
The issues started with the first report of the fire during the early hours of 26 July 2023
The Fremantle Highway reported to the Coast Guard that they had a fire on board but required “no assistance.” Because their contact spoke calm and understandable English
the Coast Guard sensed no urgency to the situation
Only after a summoned Coast Guard plane arrived on the scene over two hours after the initial report did the extent of the fire become clear
Infrared cameras showed the cargo ship was “radiating heat from front to back,” and evacuation was urged “strictly and as soon as possible.”
The previous wrong assessment of the situation meant that the rescue helicopters took a long time to take off
They were prepared for a firefighting operation but quickly had to be converted into rescue helicopters
The two helicopters eventually rescued a total of 16 men off board
The other seven crew members had jumped overboard
where ambulances took them to the nearest hospital
But no one knew what to do with the crew members on the helicopters
The pilots first flew toward the hospital in Leeuwarden
but because the crew members were largely uninjured
The next destination was the Leeuwarden air base
but due to miscommunication between the Control Room and the Coast Guard command center
the helicopters were redirected again to Eelde airport
“Because all preparations were aimed at that.”
the rescued crew members couldn’t be transferred to paramedics for medical checks because the “ambulances couldn’t enter the airport because the gate was closed.” The crew of a trauma helicopter always stationed at Eelde eventually took pity on the men and took them in
Refueling was also an issue for the helicopters
The Coast Guard helicopter flew to Eemshaven to refuel
not realizing that it was possible to do so in Eelde
refueled on a gas drilling platform in the North Sea before flying to Eelde
The goal of this evaluation is to improve the emergency services' cooperation with each other
It is also “preparation for possible external investigations.” The Dutch Safety Board is also investigating

Schiphol Airport handled 71.7 million passengers
1.0 percent more than in the previous year
the number of flights dropped by 0.5 percent
The Alders Platform covenant from 2008 stipulates that Schiphol Airport may only have a maximum of 500 thousand aircraft movements (commercial flights) per year up to and including 2020
Three student pilots who were part of a residential training course for the Dutch flag carrier KLM have been arrested on suspicion of arson at a residential complex used by the airline at Eelde Airport
located approximately 140km northeast of Amsterdam
According to the local public prosecutor’s office
the three trainee pilots started a blaze on the balcony of their shared accommodation during the bizarre incident last month
The fire forced a Transavia flight to Eelde to go into a holding pattern over the airfield after the airport fire department was called out to extinguish the balcony fire
Commercial flights are not allowed to land when the airport does not have fire vehicles available
which is a low-cost subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group
was still able to land at the airport after the fire had been put out and the firefighter released from the scene
but the airline incurred additional costs in unexpected fuel burn
The three suspects were arrested by Dutch military police more than two weeks ago and have been released on bail while investigations continue
The motive behind the alleged arson is yet to be revealed
KLM said that it “strongly disapproves of this kind of behavior,” confirming that the three trainee pilots had been suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation and an internal probe
“The Public Prosecutor’s Office is dealing with this report
we cannot comment on the status of this,” a statement from the airline continued
KLM runs a two-year training course for aspiring pilots at its dedicated facility in Eelde
which starts off with nine months of theory practice before students move on to flying single-engine aircraft from the dual commercial and military airfield
successful trainees will move on to type-rate training at Amsterdam Schiphol
where many will secure long-term careers with KLM or Transavia
Residential pilot training has taken place at Eelde since 1956
