GOAL delved into the numbers with Capology and found out! An Ivan Perisic hat trick helped PSV defeat Fortuna Sittard 4-1 at home on Saturday. The win for Peter Bosz's side means that the gap to league leaders is four points with three games remaining in the Eredivisie season. Feyenoord also scored four against Heracles, and AZ beat Go Ahead Eagles 0-3 in a controversy-filled match. Perisic got the first goal of the game after 15 minutes when he was on hand to smash the ball home from close range. The Croatian got his second in the 40th minute after a poor error in the Fortuna defence gave him an easy finish. PSV have not been at their best this season. Bosz’s side lost just once last season on their way to winning the Eredivisie season but have struggled this season, giving themselves a tough ask to catch Ajax. However, their form has picked up in recent weeks, and the third PSV goal looked like the PSV of old. Quick interplay resulted in Guus Til being sent through on the wing, and his hard low pass across the box was absolutely perfect for Noa Lang to tap home and get on the scoresheet. A nice finish from Jasper Dahlhaus got a goal back for Fortuna to make it 3-1 before Perisic got his third goal of the game with another simple finish. PSV was not the only Eredivisie team to score four goals or more during the weekend. Feyenoord continued their impressive run of form under manager Robin Van Persie with a 1-4 win away to Heracles Almelo. Anis Hadj Moussa (2), Hwang In beom, and Givaro Read scored the goals for the Rotterdammers. Another match with a significant scoreline is FC Groningen, who scored six goals against RKC Waalwijk. Waalwijk is currently bottom of the league and faces an uphill battle to stay in the division after the drubbing. The most noteworthy match was at the Adelaarshorst. Go Ahead Eagles faced AZ Alkmaar in what is a rematch of the hotly contested KNVB Cup final a month ago, which Go Ahead won on penalties. The cup final was clearly still on the mind of many players as the match turned into a controversial affair with a red card and what looked like racism from a Go Ahead Eagles supporter. AZ got their revenge, winning 0-3. Wouter Goes, AZ’s young center-back, who is becoming much discussed due to his on-pitch antics, played a central role in the game. The center-back made it 0-2 for Maarten Martens's side after Gerrit Nauber had scored an own goal to give AZ the lead in the 16th minute. Jayden Addai got a third goal for AZ Alkmaar before Goes, who had his share off on pitch battles with Go Ahead Eagles during the cup final, was then sent off in the 92nd minute for what referee Bas Nijhuis felt was a dangerous tackle. The game will continue to be in the news as footage emerged after the match of a Go Ahead Eagles fan making a monkey gesture towards AZ winger Ibrahim Sadiq. Thus far, there has been no response to the footage from either club or the Dutch football association, KNVB. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. 2025 Ivan Perisic's triple strike kept PSV's faint title hopes alive Photo: ANP/Maurice van SteenPSV Eindhoven have closed the gap on Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie to four points with three matches to play as Croatian veteran Ivan Perisic bagged a hat-trick against Fortuna Sittard Perisic scored twice in the first half before Noa Lang swept in a cross from Guus Til in the 57th minute Fortuna pulled a goal back through Jasper Dalhaus’s chipped half-volley but Perisic had the last word after being picked out by Til The result adds spice to PSV’s clash next weekend with Feyenoord, who won by the same scoreline at Heracles on Saturday with both clubs still in contention to grab the second Champions League group stage berth the first after slaloming into the penalty area from the right wing before Hwang In-Boem’s deflected shot gave Feyenoord a 3-0 half-time lead Heracles briefly threatened a comeback when Luka Kulenovic slotted home from close range in the 73rd minute but teenager Givairo Reid restored Feyenoord’s lead five minutes later AZ Alkmaar boosted their chances of playing in Europe next season with a 3-0 win over their cup final conquerors to secure a home draw in the Conference League play-offs A shot by Sven Mijnans took a deflection off two Go Ahead defenders to give AZ an early lead Defender Wouter Goes scored the second from a corner just before half-time while substitute Jayden Addai tucked away the third after Ruben van Bommel made a strong run down the left-hand side to create the opening Twente Enschede are also guaranteed a home tie in the play-offs after Sem Steijn scored his 24th goal of the season against Sparta Groningen are in pole position to bag the final play-off place as they fired six goals past ailing RKC Waalwijk with Stije Resink the only player to score twice The club from Tilburg came within seven minutes of ending their eight-match losing streak with a win at NEC but a late equaliser by Kento Shiogai meant they had to settle for a point The result means means Willem II cannot finish higher than 16th, while both PEC Zwolle and NAC Breda, whose basement clash ended in a 3-1 win for PEC We could not provide the Dutch News service without the generous support of our readers Your donations allow us to report on issues you tell us matter and provide you with a summary of the most important Dutch news each day Many thanks to everyone who has donated to DutchNews.nl in recent days We could not provide this service without you Please help us making DutchNews.nl a better read by taking part in a short survey About us | Advertise with us | Contact us Eindhoven Airport is increasing its use of lifting aids aiming to ease physical strain and improve baggage handler safety Eindhoven Airport (EIN) has significantly improved working conditions for baggage handlers by purchasing seven additional lifting aids These aids are used for loading checked baggage on departing flights and now cover a large part of the baggage hall’s loading areas The remaining areas will be addressed next with seven more lifting aids planned for installation in the first quarter of 2026 This timeline allows for necessary adjustments to the baggage system beforehand the airport will organise the baggage process to ensure handlers primarily work in areas already equipped with lifting aids part of the expanded terminal opening in summer 2027 “The goal is to make effortless lifting and moving of baggage the norm,” the airport said highlighting its commitment to long-term ergonomic improvements Eindhoven Airport continues to collaborate with baggage handlers to explore further optimisations reinforcing its proactive approach to workplace safety and wellbeing SIGN ME UP Stay Ahead in Aviation — Subscribe for Free Get exclusive access to the latest aviation insights from International Airport Review — all tailored to your interests Choose the updates that matter most to you. He added: "Before the game all I thought was the coach gave me a half-hour which was super nice I also went straight into the duels and was just driven to seek them out Of course I have to take it easy and be careful The victory, secured by goals from Ismael Saibari and Guus Til ended a run of three straight defeats for PSV and cut the gap to Eredivisie leaders Ajax to five points "I'm glad we took the three points tonight," Dest said "There are nine more games to go that we all have to win In those nine games we have to make up for it." PSV will next be in action in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at Arsenal on Wednesday. However, Dest's side have little chance of progressing after suffering an emphatic 7-1 defeat at home to the Premier League side in the first leg last week Dest has 33 caps for the USMNT but has been unavailable for selection since Mauricio Pochettino took over as coach last September. Pochettino is set to name his roster for the Concacaf Nations League finals on Tuesday. The U.S. will face Panama in the semifinals on March 20 Knockout European football is back on our agenda as we head into the second leg of our Champions League last-16 clash against PSV Eindhoven who have been a familiar foe across recent decades and especially in the past three campaigns if you're unfamiliar with the Dutch side's history or just want to know how they've been getting on this season then we have everything you need to know about our opponents: PSV have won 25 league titles as well as both the European Cup (1987/88) and UEFA Cup (1977/78) They have appeared in Europe in every season since 1975/76 meaning this will be their 51st straight campaign doing so Established in 1913 for the workers of the local Philips electronics factory 13 years later PSV reached the top-flight where they have remained ever since but further successes were fleeting until the mid-1970s when manager Kees Rijvers led his team to three league titles - including a Double - and the UEFA Cup in four seasons Better things were to come in the late 1980s when under Guus Hiddink they completed a Treble by beating Benfica for the European Cup in 1988 - one of six league titles the legendary boss won across two spells Bobby Robson continued the success into the 1990s while their last golden period came under Philip Cocu’s leadership when they won three out of four championships between 2015 and 2018 PSV play at the 36,500-capacity Philips Stadion which is the third-largest football stadium in the country with its last major works completed in 2002 It has hosted numerous Dutch national team matches as well as three matches at Euro 2000 including England’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal It was also the venue for the 2006 UEFA Cup final when Middlesbrough were beaten 4-0 by Sevilla and the 2022/23 Women's Champions League final PSV romped to their first league title in six years in superb fashion Starting the season with a record-equalling 17 straight wins their unbeaten run ran until March when they suffered their only league loss to NEC Breda However that was the only bump in the road as they finished eight points clear of holders Feyenoord to clinch title number 25 The Rotterdam club were also beaten in the season-opening Johan Cruyff Shield but they did gain revenge by dumping PSV out of the Dutch Cup in the round of 16 111 goals were netted on course to the league title with veteran striker Luuk de Jong grabbing 29 of them to earn a share of the Golden Boot He hit 36 in all competitions to earn the league's Player of the Year honours while young Belgian international winger Johan Bakayoko was named Talent of the Year after bagging 14 Having finished in second spot behind us in the Champions League group stages they were paired with Borussia Dortmund in the last-16 but despite holding the German club to a 1-1 draw in the Eindhoven a 2-0 reverse in Germany ended their hopes Peter Bosz replaced Ruud van Nistelrooy in the PSV hotseat in the summer of 2023 who notably represented Waalwijk and Feyenoord during his playing days His first major managerial achievement came when he guided Heracles into the Eredivise in 2005 and he led Ajax to the 2016 Europa League final in his one season in Amsterdam He opted to move to Borussia Dortmund after that He then pitched up at Bayer Leverkusen where he nurtured a young Kai Havertz and guided them into the Champions League in 2019 he returned to Dutch football and clinched the first championship of his career in his debut campaign at the Philips Stadion PSV have managed to retain all the key components of their title-winning squad Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman were signed permanently from Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively while their ranks have further been boosted with the acquisitions of centre-back Ryan Flamingo from Sassuolo Dutch international right-back Rick Karsdorp from Roma and veteran Croatian winger Ivan Perisic additional goal threat is offered by Oranje internationals Noa Lang and attacking midfielder Guus Til Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari has hit double figures this term but top scorer Riccardo Pepi is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury while his USA teammate Tillman has undergone ankle surgery Walter Benitez's performances between the posts over the past three seasons in Eindhoven have seen him rewarded with a first Argentina cap last year while Tyrell Malacia was loaned from Manchester United in January Former Gunner Lucas Perez was also added to the squad on a free transfer but he hasn't been included in the Champions League squad PSV's campaign once again began immaculately as they won all of their first 10 matches to top the table A 3-2 defeat at Ajax seemed to be a mere blip as they won five of the next six including a 3-0 win against Feyenoord to head into the winter break six points clear of Ajax However things have gone badly from that point Just two league wins have come from eight games which have seen home draws against AZ Alkmaar Willem II and Utrecht plus a loss at PEC Zwoll They also lost at the Philips Stadion for the first time since November 2022 when Go Ahead Eagles knocked them out of the Dutch Cup before the same side beat them 3-2 in the league That run saw Ajax surge into an eight-point lead but Sunday saw PSV finally win again when they beat Heerenveen 2-1 Bosz guided his team into the last-16 by finishing 14th in the table with four wins and two draws from their eight matches They also scored three times from the 87th minute onwards to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Shakhtar Donetsk and gained a credible 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain They then overcame a 2-1 last-16 first-leg loss at Juventus by winning 3-1 after extra-time in the return fixture Perisic rolled back the years to score in both legs while Flamingo grabbed the all-important winner to see off the Italians Last week's 7-1 success was the 11th time we have locked horns with PSV and we have done so in each of the past three seasons Freddie Ljungberg and a Thierry Henry brace secured a 4-0 win in Eindhoven before a 0-0 draw at Highbury in the group stages; the same stage that we faced each other in 2004/05 when an own goal secured us a home win before a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands when Lauren and Patrick Vieira both received red cards We were drawn against each other again in 2006/07 in the round of 16 before securing a 1-1 draw at Emirates Stadium after Alex scored at both ends to eliminate us from the competition All those games were in the Champions League but 2022/23 saw us paired in the Europa League group stages A Granit Xhaka strike saw us secure a 1-0 win at home but we fell to a 2-0 loss a week later out in Eindhoven when Joey Veerman and De Jong netted Last season saw us mark our return to the Champions League in style with a 4-0 thrashing of the Dutch giants on matchday one when Bukayo Saka Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard all found the net while we drew 1-1 out in Eindhoven when Eddie Nketiah’s opener was cancelled out by Yorbe Vertessen Copyright 2025 The Arsenal Football Club Limited Permission to use quotations from this article is granted virtue of how this 2024-25 season has gone for Juventus seeing them predicted to win — be it against somebody in the Champions League or a lower-table side in Serie A — is always going to be a bit a puzzling thought We know Juve haven’t been in their best state for weeks now yet when I signed onto WhoScored to begin the work week I noticed something that I hadn’t seen much lately: Juventus predicted to win Not a draw — and we know there’s been plenty of those They actually made that prediction look right on the money The way in which Juve got there Tuesday night against PSV Eindhoven certainly wasn’t to many our liking after Weston McKennie’s thunderbolt to open the scoring in the first half after the reigning Dutch champions tied things up and then looked like the much better side after the scoreline was suddenly even Juventus found just enough to get back in front and secure a slim lead in their favor to take with them to the Netherlands next week It was thanks to Samuel Mbangula’s first-ever Champions League goal an 82nd-minute strike after a bit of a scramble in the PSV box to give Juve a 2-1 victory at the Allianz Mbangula became the youngest player to ever score in a UCL knockout round tie for Juventus Not bad for a young Belgian kid who was playing in Serie C at this point of the season 12 months ago But with Juventus very much needing something to go right after their defense let another lead go up in smoke it really is just a matter of getting it how you can This UCL play-off round is very much about trying to survive to get to the next round where they will meet either Arsenal or Inter Milan And they have a slim advantage in the back pocket as they prepare to meet PSV once again in eight days at their place This was a better Juventus than what we saw the last time they were on their home field in the Champions League It was that performance against Benfica in which was the fear that it would be repeated again and would allow PSV to stroll into Turin build an aggregate lead and be in great shape heading into the return leg in the Netherlands But it was also a Juventus that still clearly had its flaws They couldn’t take advantage of their bright start that saw them pinning PSV back for the opening 15 minutes It was only after PSV started to really find their footing that McKennie was able to connect with that hammer of a shot with his right foot to put Juve in front it came down to how Juve would handle being in front — and Neither did the subsequent time after the PSV goal in which Juve were really looking like they were going to fall behind Mbangula popped up in the box and put Juventus back in front but they did just enough Tuesday night to get past PSV you just hope they don’t screw up like they did against Benfica two weeks ago It feels like that’s just the logical thing to do as they work this way through a big eight-day stretch in Europe and domestically Taking a 2-1 lead to the land of the Dutch next week is probably more than some expected WhoScored’s prediction was right on the money that certainly wasn’t a good night at the office On Wednesday night, Juventus got what they deserved Despite another long-distance belter from one of their Americans to put them ahead on aggregate Despite actually heading to the Netherlands with their first notable winning streak of the season Juve got what they deserved at the Philips Stadion And that was to get bounced from the Champions League Juventus’ performance against PSV Eindhoven was very much a continuation of how the first leg in Turin went eight days ago But the difference this time is that there was no late heroics to find some sort of escape PSV — who entered the decisive second leg with just one win in their last five — was able to flip the aggregate scoreline in their favor and oust Juventus from the Champions League with a 3-1 on the night and 4-3 over the two legs The one thing that Juve couldn’t afford to do — you know actually lose Wednesday night — was what ended up playing out and now it’s another hit to a season in which qualifying for the UCL Round of 16 was one of the biggest goals the club had And instead of being the ones celebrating a spot in the final 16 and waiting to see who they’ll get in Friday’s draw coaching staff members and much of the 35,000-plus in attendance going nuts It was an appropriate kind of ending for what simply turned out to be an awful night in the Netherlands They dominated much of the second half and extra time before setting up shop and daring Juventus to try and score on them As much as Juve had their chances in extra time — and they did whether it was Dusan Vlahovic (nice to see you again!) or Khephren Thuram — the only reason why the scoreline wasn’t more in PSV’s favor was thanks to a couple of brilliant saves from Michele Di Gregorio PSV was fully in control and Juve were essentially just hanging on for dear life But then the ball pinged off Federico Gatti’s foot as he attempted to apparently control the ball right in front of Di Gregorio when he should have instead tried to simply just clear it if at all possible PSV taking the lead once and for all — something that was about as deserved as anything to happen on this night Juventus’ defense faltered either thanks to individual errors or just being torn apart by PSV on the counter Their manager’s inexperience on the sideline in these types of situations showed Thiago Motta way too long to make the triple sub that brought on a whole new double pivot even though one of those “midfielders” was actually Andrea Cambiaso who came on just 10 minutes in after Renato Veiga was forced off injured Maybe we should have taken it as some sort of omen when Veiga got hurt that this night would turn from bad news to even worse There certainly wasn’t the late comeback from Juventus like the last time a Juve center back had to leave a European fixture away from home early due to injury But all I keep coming back to as the minutes tick away after the final whistle sounded is that Juventus deserved what they got against PSV This was a Juve team that was second best against a PSV team that has not been playing well at all over the last month even with the advantage on aggregate coming into the night Juventus saw their European run come to an end because how poorly they played for much of the 120-plus minutes Wednesday night This Champions League campaign began with quite the high-energy return to Europe with a win over this same PSV side it all came to an end in Eindhoven — a result a performance and overall UCL showing that will leave a whole lot to be desired no matter how you look at it as time goes on United States men's national team defender Sergiño Dest is set to make his return for PSV Eindhoven on Saturday after an 11-month injury layoff PSV coach Peter Bosz said Friday that he was expecting to include Dest in the squad that takes on Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie Sergiño Dest will be in the matchday squad tomorrow I'm very happy about that," he told a news conference Dest, 24, suffered a torn ACL while training with PSV on April 20 last year. He’s very young, and we need to protect him.” Did he see tonight’s result coming? “No, but this is the beauty of football. This is a competition we love … it’s a special night for us.” He also points out that two full-backs – Timber and Calafiori – scored from open play. “This is the kind of team I want to manage!” 4 Mar 202523.14 CETHere’s Martin Ødegaard, Uefa’s official player of the match: “We conceded one goal, but apart from that it was a top performance. We worked hard to improve, we wanted to be better after [losing to] West Ham. Today it clicked, we had a little extra focus … when we play on this level it’s really fun to play.” Would he like to go back to Real Madrid next? “It would be fun, but we’re happy whoever we play,” he says, before quickly adding “once we get the job done at home, of course.” He then gets his official Uefa bauble from Daniel Sturridge to complete an exceptional evening. 4 Mar 202523.06 CETIn tonight’s other tie, Lille earned a 1-1 draw at Dortmund, Hakon Haraldsson’s second-half equaliser putting the Ligue 1 side in the box seat before the second leg. 4 Mar 202523.02 CETDeclan Rice: “We were fluid, we had enthusiasm, hunger … we feel we’ve been playing well all season but sometimes we win by six, sometimes by one or two, sometimes we lose by one.” He’s also full of praise for Ethan Nwaneri – “17 years old, shining on the biggest stage there is in football.” Jurriën Timber is happy with “an amazing win” that “puts us in a good position for the second leg.” All a bit sensible for my liking, but he does ask what the score was between Real and Atlético. 4 Mar 202522.58 CETAssuming that Arsenal avoid a seven-goal swing back at the Emirates, will it be Real or Atlético Madrid next? Well, Real have won the first leg 2-1, but the tie is very much alive. and can already start planning for a quarter-final against Real or Atlético Madrid PSV were a shambles in defence, particularly in the second half, but Arsenal punished them ruthlessly. Declan Rice was everywhere, Ethan Nwaneri was excellent but Martin Odegaard ran the show, taking the opposition apart at will. Next up: Man Utd (A). Updated at 22.57 CET4 Mar 202522.50 CET90 mins: Two added minutes. 4 Mar 202522.50 CET89 mins: David Raya loses the ball a long way from his goal but PSV, now utterly shell-shocked from front to back, don’t make anything of the opportunity. 4 Mar 202522.43 CET82 mins: Two more PSV changes – Boscagli, who’s had a rough night, is replaced by Armando Obispo. Also coming on is Joey Veerman, replacing Saibari, who pretty much disappeared after hitting the bar early on. 4 Mar 202522.42 CET81 mins: Arsenal keep the ball and it ends up with Zinchenko, playing in an attacking role. He chests down and volleys across goal, and only a fine fingertip save from Benitez stops a seventh for Arsenal. 4 Mar 202522.40 CET79 mins: But it’s cleared and Arsenal break, Odegaard’s overhit through ball still eventually getting to Sterling, who is denied by a well-timed Perisic challenge. 4 Mar 202522.39 CET78 mins: The PSV fans who didn’t bolt for the exits after Odegaard’s goal are chanting again, trying to inspire their team to rescue some pride. A probing run from Bakayoko wins a corner … 4 Mar 202522.38 CET77 mins: PSV are almost undone again as a loose backpass falls to Tierney, whose cross doesn’t find a black shirt. It’s strange to recall that the hosts were very much in this game at half-time. 4 Mar 202522.36 CET75 mins: More changes for Arsenal, with Kieran Tierney and Ben White on for Mikel Merino and the booked goalscorer Timber. 4 Mar 202522.35 CETGOAL PSV 1-6 Arsenal (Odegaard 73')Martin Odegaard who has had this game on his left boot pretty much throughout runs at PSV’s papier mache defence and fires a shot at goal and Benitez can only palm it into the far corner 4 Mar 202522.31 CETNO GOAL! A PSV clearance rebounds off Calafiori and into the path of Trossard, who is miles offside, but goes round Benitez and strokes the ball in before the flag is inevitably raised. 4 Mar 202522.29 CET68 mins: Timber is booked, somewhat harshly, for time wasting. We’re going to see some Arsenal changes shortly, I would wager. 4 Mar 202522.28 CET67 mins: Arsenal seem quite content to let PSV try and break them down, and Saliba takes the ball from Perisic on the touchline with almost contemptous ease. 4 Mar 202522.26 CET65 mins: Two more PSV changes – sprightly winger Johan Bakayoko and full-back Rick Karsdorp replace Richard Ledezma and Luuk De Jong. 4 Mar 202522.25 CET64 mins: PSV keep pressing and probing, but Lang’s attempted through ball is cut out by Calafiori, to audible groans from the home fans. Carnival very much over at this point. 4 Mar 202522.23 CET62 mins: After half-hearted appeals from PSV for handball, Malacia sends in a cross that has Raya worried, but flies wide of the far post. 4 Mar 202522.22 CET60 mins: Rice whips the corner to the far post, where Gabriel comes crashing in – but his downward header ends up bouncing wide. 4 Mar 202522.20 CET59 mins: Nwaneri continues to menace the PSV defence, collecting Odegaard’s pass and firing a shot which Boscagli heads over the bar … 4 Mar 202522.19 CETIn a game featuring a pitiful three goals so far, Real Madrid have retaken the lead against Atlético. Brahim Diaz has made it 2-1 on a big night for former Manchester City players. 4 Mar 202522.15 CET54 mins: PSV continue to be a shambles at the back, and Nwaneri has time and space to cut inside and leather a shot at Benitez, who palms it away to relative safety. 4 Mar 202522.13 CET53 mins: From the corner, the ball is worked to Perisic, whose swirling far-post cross is headed on to the post by De Jong! 4 Mar 202522.13 CET51 mins: PSV aren’t giving up – not going forward anyway – and Perisic forces Raya to turn the ball over for a corner … 4 Mar 202522.10 CETPeter Bosz has his head in his hands, and those PSV fans not heading for the exits are whistling furiously. They’ve been absolutely torn apart, and it feels like a case of how many Arsenal want to score. 4 Mar 202522.09 CETGOAL! PSV 1-5 Arsenal (Trossard 48')Good gracious. Arsenal have another and it’s a beauty – Trossard backheeling to Calafiori who then slips the ball in behind for the Belgian to scoop a lovely finish over Benitez PSV 1-4 Arsenal (Odegaard 46')It’s the perfect start to the second half for Arsenal getting beyond Malacia and sweeping in a dangerous cross that Benitez can only palm out to Martin Odegaard 4 Mar 202521.58 CETWith his goal, Ethan Nwaneri (17yr 348d) becomes the third-youngest goal scorer in the Champions League knockout stage – behind only Bojan (17y 217d) and Jude Bellingham (17y 289d). Updated at 22.02 CET4 Mar 202521.56 CETSomething I kept meaning to point out amid the flurry of chances – Declan Rice mentioned before the game that Mikel Arteta wants his players to be more flexible in terms of their playing position. We’ve certainly seen that from Rice in the first half – he’s been very attacking – and defenders are getting forward in open play, as seen when right-back Timber nodded home Rice’s cross for the opener. That is presumably to ease the burden on “false nine” Mikel Merino, although he got Arsenal’s third with the poaching instincts of big Micky Quinn in his pomp. 4 Mar 202521.53 CET“Suddenly, everything in Arsenal–world looks fine, fine, fine. Clouds part. Sunshine streams down. The power of love, or more specifically, three terrific goals,” wrote Charles Antaki, seconds before PSV won that corner. 4 Mar 202521.52 CETHalf time in Madrid, where the red-hot Julian Alvarez has got Atlético level at the Bernabéu. It’s 1-1 there, and Dortmund lead Lille 1-0 at home thanks to Karim Adeyemi. 4 Mar 202521.49 CET47 mins: Perisic crumples into Gabriel underneath a long ball from Flamingo, and is ordered to his feet by the referee. 4 Mar 202521.47 CET45 mins: Another chance for PSV! Malacia, who’s here on loan from Manchester United, whips in a terrific cross on to the head of Luuk De Jong, who nods it over the bar. Four added minutes, and no sign of this game slowing down. 4 Mar 202521.46 CET43 mins: Arsenal are immediately back on the front foot with Declan Rice – who has spent much of the game playing almost as a left winger – firing a low shot towards the far corner which Benitez gets his fingertips to. Nobody notices, though, and PSV get a goal kick. 4 Mar 202521.44 CETGOAL PSV 1-3 Arsenal (Lang pen 41')Crank up the Kernkraft smacks the ball into the corner with David Raya not making a move either way 4 Mar 202521.42 CET40 mins: PSV, trying to regain a foothold in this tie, have a corner … 4 Mar 202521.41 CET“Did I just hear Clattenberg say that had Lewis-Skelly not been booked then that tackle would have been a booking – but as he had been booked already that tackle wasn’t worthy of a second yellow card?” asks Ian Sergeant I guess it’s inevitable that referees will weigh up second yellow cards differently 4 Mar 202521.36 CETGOAL! PSV 0-3 Arsenal (Merino 30')The goal stands, and Arsenal – who could have gone a goal and/or a man down – are threatening to run away with the tie completely 4 Mar 202521.33 CET30 mins: GOAL this time profiting from a defensive disaster class as PSV repeatedly fail to clear the ball Flamingo topples over as if perched on a single leg and Mikel Merino pounces to roll the ball into the net But wait – there’s a VAR check for offside.
