Bridges are a key component of any country’s infrastructure
enabling the seamless flow of people and goods throughout the transport network
around 200 bridges built in the 1950s-60s are suffering from potential fatigue
under pressure from ever increasing traffic volumes and heavier truck loads
To combat bridge fatigue and ensure ongoing operational safety
the Dutch roads authority Rijkswaterstaat has launched a long-term bridge maintenance and refurbishment programme to extend their service life by about 30 years
Arup and RHDHV have worked together over the past 15 years to deliver the strengthening design and engineering solutions for this repair programme
Our joint venture has delivered a sustainable remediation programme
from design and contract preparation through to managing implementation
Over the past ten years the programme has future-proofed six landmark steel bridges
We have worked on the Muiderbrug between Diemen and Muiden
the Kreekrakbrug connecting Zeeland-Noord-Brabant
Galecopperbrug in Utrecht and Tacitusbrug near Ewijk
the renovation design of the Van Brienenoord Bridge is ready
Every bridge is unique and needs a custom solution
Our expertise in bridge design and our experience in their build means we can compare maintenance strategies against possible replacement for an optimal
One key aspect of the renovation programme has been the extensive upgrade of road surfaces to allow for heavier traffic and higher axle loads
steel deck systems stiffened with steel ribs
have been reinforced with High Strength Concrete (HSC) for a stronger
Some bridges have also been upgraded to meet current standards and requirements
including adapting the height of the bridge to allow for ship navigation underneath
Economic viability is always an important factor in capital programmes
and an area of particular expertise for Arup
One example of our long-term thinking is the Suurhoff bridge
but will now be replaced by a bridge combining rail and car transit to realise a more efficient use of the budget. We have provided all the technical management activities
including developing the renovation design
supervising inspections and delivering the implementation specifications across the entire bridge renovation scheme
Our bridge engineers are also responsible for the technical assessments during the contract selection process and
overseeing technical supervision during the implementation
We have developed a unique bridge information model to enable the exchange
storage and management of knowledge between stakeholders at all stages of the project
Our 3D models also help the working team to visualise advanced calculations and enable advanced static and fatigue modelling for different scenarios
The expertise and knowledge we acquire during the ongoing bridge renovation programme is then used to design new bridges
As part of our renovations we have developed a real-time sensor system to monitor the performance of bridge components in real time and enable the client to better calculate remaining service life
By analysing large data sets from measurements on the bridge and the traffic that crosses the bridge
Rijkswaterstaat can now schedule maintenance and use available resources more efficiently
Find out more about how digital shapes our approach to asset management
Innovative reinforcement techniques have been developed that can be applied as an alternative for High Strength Concrete (HSB)
This consists of reinforcements with steel plates in combination with epoxy and the development of Fibre Reinforced Polymers
We have developed and applied standard solutions for the most common issues
including welding improvement techniques to increase a bridge’s service life
trough reinforcements as a solution for cracks
and repair for cover plate cracks for a longer service life
These solutions optimally match the current problems bridges experience and contribute to the overall approach we have taken to bring the whole programme to life
Planning and analysis of the Dutch bridge regeneration programme to extend the lifespan of the Netherland’s bridge infrastructure
Deploying advanced technology and construction techniques to maximise longevity and budgets
Developing new materials to reduce maintenance costs over the next 30 years

makes the 44-mile round trip to the town of Margraten to tend the grave of an East Bridgewater man he never met
Buried beneath the stone cross at Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial is Pvt
He died at age 33 while pursuing the Nazis into Julich
Janssen has been among more than 8,000 Dutch citizens who tend the graves of American soldiers killed during World War II
They do so in tribute to the American troops who fought the Germans and liberated Margraten in 1944
Caring for the grave has stoked Janssen’s curiosity about the man buried there
it’s the least we can do for these men,” Janssen said in an interview this week over the video-chat service Skype
Janssen has reached out to federal and local officials to piece together the soldier’s life story
Janssen’s research has also put him in touch with East Bridgewater town historian Margaret Alexander
Lewis was only eight years old when her father died
but she told Janssen that Heede was born in Norway
moved to the United States with his family
went to school in Boston and obtained his U.S
Heede and his father ran a dairy farm that continues to operate under the management of the Kominsky brothers
and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium
Heede then pressed farther and was killed fighting Nazis in Julich
“Taking care of the grave is one thing that gave me a lot of satisfaction,” Janssen said
“I was wondering if (his family) knew that he got the respect he deserved after giving his life abroad – and that also the Dutch will not forget this.”
Janssen said his countrymen feel so strongly about the American soldiers that there is a waiting list for people wanting to adopt a grave
The Dutch are ensuring the soldiers’ lives were not lost in vain and will never be forgotten
East Bridgewater Veterans Agent Robert Charles said
“Not only as an American but as an American veteran
I stand proud of what the Dutch people are doing for the Americans that gave their lives and are buried in their soil,” Charles said
“The Dutch people should be commended for what they have done and continue to do
They are heroes taking care of our heroes.”
Learning together to discover how to improve care for older people in and around the town of Elsloo
a postdoctoral researcher in the department of Family Medicine
“This local care network covers a region where the number of people aged 75 and over has doubled in twenty years
the demand for health care is rapidly increasing
Older people also have increasingly complex care needs as they have multiple conditions”
To provide proper health care and social support
it’s crucial that the parties involved work closely together
“The question isn’t whether they should work together
Good cooperation can prevent both gaps and redundancies in care.”
The establishment of the local care network in 2013 was an important step in the right direction
A large number of parties work together in this interdisciplinary network
also plays a role as it provides services under the Social Support Act
Anneke van Dijk began research on further implementing cooperation within this network in 2015
funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development
she stayed on as coordinator of the network
My current research focuses on promoting the collaboration among all these different stakeholders
Everyone says that interprofessional collaboration can be improved and that it’s necessary to work with individual care plans for patients
communication between stakeholders can be quite complex
they have to know each other well and know what each party has to offer.”
Action research is a useful tool for investigating how to promote interprofessional collaboration
You determine which steps to take together
the researcher participates in the process.” All partners in the care network are included in this process
a housing association and a number of social welfare organisations
In addition to getting to know each other better
the stakeholders work towards a common approach in which they make use of each other’s strengths
two specific themes were selected: Fall Prevention and Future-Proof Living
we divided the participants into two groups and assigned a theme to each group
Each of the stakeholders had to interview two people in the group they represent within the network about the theme they’d been assigned
This gave us a clear picture of the situation of older people in Elsloo.”
Anneke van Dijk also used a tool called Value Pursuit in her research
“This tool is about asking questions in groups
How can I contribute and what can I take from this?’ In this case
‘Learn from each other and provide concrete help for older people’
‘What are we already doing and what more can we do by making use of each other’s strengths?’ For the theme of Fall Prevention
this approach resulted in a concrete proposal to set up a location where people can go for information about fall prevention or practical help with adjusting their wheeled walker
“This process of developing solutions together is called co-creation”
Anneke van Dijk applies co-creation tools she learnt within LIME
is an extensive development programme aimed at measuring care more efficiently and effectively
Anneke van Dijk works as a coach in this programme
facilitating and supporting other researchers in using methods in the co-creation process
she and Anita Stevens of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences developed a “co-creation impact compass” to help researchers select and apply these kinds of methods
The compass forms the basis of a PhD training course at CAPHRI
The co-creation process definitely adds value to the Elsloo project
“You can tell from the pleasant communication between the stakeholders
Older people will undoubtedly have noticed this
I really enjoy seeing how enthusiastically people participate and how committed they are
We’re taking steps together and are truly learning together.”
– A man with a string of arrests and convictions in Whatcom County
including for crimes that led to a chase that caused the death of a sheriff’s deputy
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Adrian Sassen Van-Elsloo and a female accomplice were found rummaging around a home on Grandview Road last Saturday
They told deputies that the owner of the property said they could enter and take what they wanted
but the owner told officers they had no such permission
Van-Elsloo is a frequent visitor to the Whatcom County jail and is currently scheduled for trial on drug
Among his convictions are those for crimes that led to a car chase that caused the death of Whatcom County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Herzog in 2001
The Bellingham Herald reports Van-Elsloo was convicted of two felonies in that incident and was sentenced to four years in jail

Most of the exterior body panels have been painted in Cerulean Blue except for a silver element on both sides as well as the bright orange rear wing endplates
The exterior is then adorned in a selection of carbon fiber components and like all other P1 GTRs
one is welcomed by a similar layout to the ‘regular’ P1
a Formula 1-inspired carbon fiber steering wheel takes pride of place in the cabin as do a number of new switches and toggles across the center console
With a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mated to an electric motor under its skin, the P1 GTR delivers 1000 PS (986 hp)
making it one of the world’s fastest production cars
It can be yours for the measly sum of 3.19 million euros ($3.59 million)
Despite being out of reach for most, this P1 GTR is a real eye-catcher and actually the second we’ve seen listed by Carlink International. Unlike the first
this P1 GTR hasn’t undergone Lanzante Motorsport’s road-legal conversion but has barely been driven
it has just 126 miles (203 km) on the odometer
making it the perfect candidate for the conversion

it has an interior dominated by exposed carbon fiber and all the equipment you could ever need for a track day outing

One proposal aims to require age verification for pornography sites; another would require parental consent for minors to have a social media account
DES MOINES — Online pornography sites would require age verification and parental consent would be required for a minor to create a social media account in the state under proposals advancing in the Iowa Legislature
The proposed bills take different approaches at achieving a similar goal: to protect Iowa children from pornography and other online content that proponents believe to be objectionable or harmful
“Protecting children from harm is a primary duty that parents have
And the state of Iowa also has a vested interest in doing that as well
the devices that children use on a daily basis have let it be available — hard-core pornography content
videos and pictures that harm the minds of these minors,” Cheryl Elsloo
with the Pella-based advocacy group Protect My Innocence
said during the public comment period of a legislative hearing on one of the proposals Tuesday at the Iowa Capitol
parental consent would be required for anyone in Iowa under the age of 18 to create a social media account
That bill is scheduled for its first legislative hearing Wednesday morning
The other bill which was featured in Tuesday’s subcommittee hearing
that bill would have required the activation of a filter whenever a minor in Iowa activated a phone or created an account on a phone
But the bill is being reworked after phone manufacturers said such a law would be infeasible because manufacturers do not delineate to which states phones are shipped
Computer & Communications Industry Association
a national trade organization that represents communications and technology firms
issued a statement agreeing with the legislation’s stated goal but also noting the ways it would be logistically difficult for manufacturers to comply
“CCIA shares the overall goal of increased privacy and security for younger users online and has concerns about how technically infeasible and sweeping laws could give rise to consumer confusion and costly litigation without providing meaningful protections,” CCIA State Policy Director Khara Boender said in the statement
Lobbyists for mobile companies Apple and T-Mobile spoke at the legislative hearing
and in addition to noting the logistical hurdles
pointed out that there already are options on devices
websites and applications for parents to restrict content from their children
said that in the process of running the bill he learned more about how phones are manufactured and sold
he plans to change the proposal to focus on an age verification requirement for pornography sites
plus an education campaign that teaches parents and children how to create safeguards on phones
we would have to make Apple and Google and all these great
worldwide corporations change their practices
they’re not going to do that for Iowa,” Wills said
“So it became very evident that we’re going to have to make some changes to the bill.”
Wills said his plan is to model his proposal after an instruction and education program from Florida
and an age verification system recently enacted in Utah
the pornography website PornHub blocked access to its site from the state
Wills’ proposal, House File 2114
was advanced Tuesday by the two Republicans on a three-member legislative panel
It is now eligible for consideration by the full House Judiciary Committee
The proposal to require parental consent for a minor to create a social media account, House File 2255
is scheduled for consideration in a subcommittee hearing Wednesday
It is also running through the House Judiciary Committee
said his proposal attempts to help parents protect their children from the dangers of social media for young people
According to the Mayo Clinic
while social media can be healthy for teens
it also can have negative effects: it can distract teens from their homework
expose them to online predators and raise the risk of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression
“The problem I see … is that there’s a gap in the ability of parents to control things that really they are responsible for,” Thomson said Tuesday
“Here’s all this social media out there
… So this restores to parents a level of control that they have traditionally had.”
Thomson said believes the bill also is fair to social media companies
and that he has been working with their lobbyists at the Iowa Capitol
The lone group registered in opposition to the bill is TechNet, which represents dozens of tech companies
the parent company of Facebook and Instagram

To ensure the paint color dominates the exterior of the supercar

That means the car has carbon trimmings on the front bumper
Even the carbon engine cover has the signatures of Maurizio Arrivabene
Stepping inside the cabin reveals a beautifully restrained cockpit free of any unnecessary ‘look-at-me’ components
beyond the orange of the seat belt buckle and a handful of red buttons
there is simply black leather and alcantara joined by white stitching
The car has a mere 2,175 miles (3,500 km) on the clock and an asking price of 781,500 euros
It’s expensive but that’s the price you pay for exclusivity
The unique Bugatti Blue Ferrari 458 Spider which sent carspotters into a frenzy a couple of years ago is currently up for sale in Elsloo
this Ferrari 458 Spider was actually the very first car from the Italian automaker’s exclusive Tailor Made program
The Bugatti Blue exterior paint is joined with gunmetal grey five-spoke wheels
a black rear diffuser and black elements at the front-end
The interior closely mimics the exterior with the seats combining black and dark blue fabric
Elsewhere are a range of carbon fibre elements across the centre console and dashboard while black leather adorns the steering wheel and upper part of the dash
Some of the special components ordered through the Tailor Made program include the aforementioned wheels
the black stitched Cavallino’s on the headrests and F1 fabric for the carpets and lower dashboards
Other key components of the vehicle include the eye-catching white rev counter
tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system
satellite navigation and fully electric seats
The car has an asking price of 199,000 euros

The exterior has been painted in the stunning shade known as Volcano Orange, the same color used for the original P1 Concept show car
Complementing the paint work is carbon fiber across the front fascia
wing mirrors and underside of the rear wing
The interior is also rather special with brown leather and alcantara across the seats and door panels
A chassis plaque also reveals that this P1 is number 134 of just 375 produced
it is understandable why it is priced just below $2 million while most other P1s are fetching over that figure
driving almost 20,000 km in one of the world’s fastest cars while making a profit of over $500,000 seems like quite the good deal

Similar announcements have been expected for the last 18 months
with HLN describing One Cycling as "The Loch Ness Monster of cycling."
Everyone involved in One Cycling has signed Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA)
but the next few months are considered vital to coincide with the next three-year UCI WorldTour race and licence period
but it aims to shake and reform professional cycling
and disrupt the status quo in the sport due to the dominance of the Tour de France organiser ASO and cycling's governing body
the UCI recently said the sport's stakeholders "must be adequately consulted in relation to the One Cycling project
given its implications for all stakeholders and for the calendar as a whole."
Cyclingnews understands that an initial presentation to the UCI
the AIOCC race organisers association and the CPA riders' Association was held a few weeks ago
"The red line is that we don’t want to have a breakaway league
we don’t want to have a private league," said UCI President David Lappartient at the start of the 2025 season in Australia
The Saudi Arabian SURJ Sports Investment fund
which is controlled by the Saudi PIF sovereign wealth fund
has apparently confirmed its involvement and is widely expected to finance One Cycling via a €250 million investment
the SURJ funding will mean the men's teams that sign up to become a shareholder in One Cycling will receive €1 million a year for the next three years
while women's teams will receive €250,000 per annum
when One Cycling is expected to begin to generate revenue from a variety of sources that monetise racing and the fans
HLN reports that a third of SURJ's €250 million investment will only be paid if ASO agrees to join the project
fearing it will undermine its financial and political power
Cyclingnews obtained a 150-page document last year that detailed One Cycling’s plans and ambitions
They included having more VIP hospitality areas at races and perhaps even charging fans to see races at specific locations along the route
Digital technology and modern marketing techniques would be harnessed to monetise event rights
Cyclingnews understands that most of the major men's teams are ready to sign up and join the project
with a growing number of women's teams also interested
Alpecin-Deceuninck and Movistar are said to be ready to become shareholders in the One Cycling management company
Cofidis and Arkea-B&B Hotels are said to be against the project
with UAE Team Emirates-XRG sitting on the fence
carefully not to anger their Emirati backers or ASO
Flanders Classics is the driving force amongst race organisers keen to join One Cycling
while RCS Sport is also still interested but hesitant about making a final decision
Negotiations for SURJ to sponsor the Giro d'Italia maglia rosa have apparently fallen through
with an Italian clothing brand set to be revealed on Wednesday
Het Laatste Nieuws suggested that One Cycling could include four new races
with teams carefully directing their biggest riders to clash more often in races that do deals with One Cycling
the WorldTour teams can only choose to skip one WorldTour race per season
rather than a number of the most recently created races
meaning they face an even busier calendar even before new races are created
New One Cycling races could include a race in Saudi Arabia that will serve as the closing event to the season
The Tour de France is less than three months away
but Het Laatste Nieuws suggested "there was talk of a breakthrough' after a recent key meeting in London
no details of the breakthrough have emerged
The prettiest towns and villages in the Netherlands BookmarkBookmarkBy Victoria SévenoUpdated on May 17, 2024When you think of stunning scenery and quaint villages, the Netherlands might not be the first country that comes to mind
But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have plenty to offer in the way of pretty towns and villages
If you’re looking to explore more of this small (but mighty) country
why not plan a trip to one of these lesser-known gems
much of which dates back to the early 19th century
When strolling through Broek in Waterland, be sure to enjoy the views of the Havenrak Lake and stop off for some delicious pancakes at De Witte Swaen
another pretty town worth visiting in this area is Monnickendam
Image credit: Kim dB via Shutterstock.com
Located significantly further north than Broek in Waterland is Bourtange, a fortified town sitting near the Dutch-German border. About an hour’s drive to the southeast of Groningen
Bourtagne is probably one of the better-known spots to feature on this list
but that doesn’t mean it’s any less worthy of its place
This town has a long and rich history; Fort Bourtange was initially built during the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648), and in the late 16th century became part of the fortifications on the border between the northern Dutch provinces and Germany. The fort has been out of action since the mid-19th century, meaning Bourtange exists today as a normal village and open-air museum
but just because it isn’t as well known doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time
Image credit: Marc Venema via Shutterstock.com
Anyone who comes across the town of Elsloo would likely think they’d stumbled across the border and into Germany without even realising. Along the Dutch border with Belgium (not Germany, interestingly enough), about a 25-minute drive north of Maastricht
a town which claims to be the oldest farming village in the Netherlands - archaeological digs have revealed that people first settled there around 7.000 years ago
Elsloo acts as a perfect starting point for a number of gorgeous cycling and walking routes in Limburg
and those visiting the town will be treated to the timeless sight of cobblestone streets and old brick houses with painted shutters
be sure to explore the local botanical gardens and Kasteelpark (“castle park”)
which looks out over the Maas and the Belgian town of Kotem
Image credit: Hanneke Wetzer via Shutterstock.com
which was the seat of the noble Van Boxtel family
as well as several examples of gorgeous architecture
You might have already heard of this one, as it was only a few years ago that Winsum in Groningen was voted the most beautiful village in the Netherlands
beating out stiff competition from some of the other towns and villages on this list
Winsum is comprised of two villages - Bellingweek and Obergum - which sit on either side of the Winsumerdiep canal and are connected by two bridges
and a whopping 59 national monuments and four municipal monuments
No wonder the people of the Netherlands find it so lovely
Image credit: Marc Venema via Shutterstock.com
Another must-do if visiting Spakenburg is to book a trip on an authentic Dutch fishing boat
which will allow you to enjoy the local scenery while also learning about the town’s fishing history
Image credit: Harry Beugelink via Shutterstock.com
It’s true that many of the towns and villages in the Netherlands (including the ones featured on this list) have a typical look and architectural style
could not be mistaken for any other Dutch town
In the province of Limburg and sitting on the Dutch-Belgian border
Thorn is known as the Witte stadje (“white town”) because all the buildings (except for the church) in Thorn are painted white
Just going to Thorn and wandering the fairytale-like streets is an ideal way to spend your time
but you could also book a tour or follow one of the local cycling or horse-riding routes
Image credit: Laurens Hoddenbagh via Shutterstock.com
There are a number of lovely towns worth visiting in the northern province of Friesland; the fortified city Dokkum is both a beautiful place and a great spot for some shopping
and the seaside towns of Hindelopen and Stavoren both offer lovely views of the Ijsselmeer
Image credit: Bjorn Keith via Shutterstock.com
Zeeland - as the province's name would suggest - almost consists more of water than land
but aside from heading down to Zeeland just to partake in watersports and visit the province’s beaches
you can also spend your time visiting some of the local towns and villages
One that’s definitely worth a stop is Zierikzee
which is along the southern coast of the middle of the three islands
Located 50 kilometres southwest of Rotterdam, Zierikzee is a real port town with a rich history that can still be observed today - there are more than 500 monuments to be discovered in and around the town
There are a number of charming shops and plenty of terraces offering lovely views of the harbour
Image credit: Milos Ruzicka via Shutterstock.com
As mentioned right at the beginning of this article
there are many beautiful - and famous - small towns and villages in the province of North Holland
But aside from the popular sights like Edam
there are plenty of other lesser-known spots that are most definitely still worth your time
just north of the village of Zaandijk - another pretty and oft-visited spot thanks to the iconic Zaanse Schans - you’ll find one of these lesser-known gems: De Rijp
De Rijp was the birthplace of Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater
a millwright and hydraulic engineer who played a key role in the Netherlands’ first stages of land reclamation and was involved in the creation of the first polder in the world
as it was founded at the end of the 13th century and became extremely wealthy during the Dutch Golden Age due to whaling
herring fishing and the local processing of hemp

You are not going to tell us to visit Limburg without tasting Limburg's hospitality
We prefer to do that since our last visit to the city Gasterij de Koffiemolen
as they all know so well about the place in Valkenburg and the surrounding area
So off to the old French Water Mill (hence the name) in the heart of the center and just walk in
Once there we understand what the Limburgers mean by the place
Because is it a shop or can we sit down for that good cup of coffee that we were promised in advance
Amidst the flea market and lots of vintage around you
But they are there and you can really sit down and enjoy their delicacies at the same table
But then choose our personal favorite: the pastry corner

hidden between those hills after braving the beautiful driveway and an extra lap around the fountain in the courtyard (which is allowed!) and a small look at the pond in the mega garden
the holiday mode spontaneously switches on
you can dine there and enjoy the lovely terraces
The terrace with the beautiful view is already a plus

Are you looking for a place with an amazing view in Limburg
but one surrounded by peace and quiet and nature as far as the eye can see
On the surface of the site it looks like the Swiss countryside
This is depicted as a beautiful white building
balconies with a sea of flowers on the edge and the showstopper: a lovely terrace with your nose looking out over the hills
simply let yourself be completely pampered and opt for a 'four-course menu du Chef' with a matching wine arrangement
The restaurant of the Klein Switzerland hotel
then you can wake up the next morning on that flower-drenched balcony and let your eyes get used to the sunlight over the valley..
Little Switzerland
Like a place the name the Glass Palace receives
if it comes close to the charm and dreaminess that we automatically get from the name
The Glass Palace is a whopper of a building in the center of Heerlen and rather impressive in its robustness
but on the fifth floor the doors open to Brasserie My Streek and there it is
You arrive at Brasserie Mijn Streek: where - how could it be otherwise - they prefer to work in the kitchen with products from their own region
Or will there only be asparagus on your plate and a pie served for dessert
On the menu you will find the delicacy itself in the form of cake tar from Run from Margraten
Brasserie My Streek
because at the very edge of the same city there is a quite beautiful castle
Terworm Castle In addition to being a restaurant
if you want to go there without getting married (it is that beautiful there)..
The garden is in the French rococo style and sitting down for a delicious dinner is highly recommended
Because as soon as the clouds appear again and the temperature starts to drop
it will be all the more cozy inside Terworm Castle
Pst: if you're hanging around in Limburg and it's going to snow
Terworm Castle
We have been a bit in love with Limburg for quite a long time
we haven't experienced that feeling before
Restaurant Pirandello is a pearl of a discovery in Limburg Landgraaf (where there is only a few things to experience during PinkPop
sorry not sorry) and is located in Hotel Winselerhof
The restaurant has a lot of Italian on the menu
in the most authentic way out there. Oh lord that canneloni with spinach and ricotta..
go go go for the tiramisu with cherries from our own orchard
this almost never happens - forget how beautiful the restaurant looks
Or spend a night thinking about it and come back again the next day
you can also sleep at Pirandello Hotel Winselerhof
Pirandello
Elsloo Castle is another version of an impressive Dutch castle
Picture perfect is an understatement to say the least
Close your eyes in palatial suites after a long day of touring and wake up in Limburg's opulence..
Hotel plus restaurant (plus just a beautiful location on it's own) is more than you want
everywhere and everything feels romantic as it should be in a castle and pampering from a hand on the heart delicious kitchen
asparagus soup in Limburg is really the tastiest
if it were up to those from the kitchen of Elsloo
Elsloo Castle
From a gigantic castle to a tiny (crunchy) one that is) mountain hut in the 'mountain village' Filing
Completely hidden between the trees of the Vijlenerbos (which
which is the highest forest in the Low Countries)
every now and then tufts of people enter the Boscafé
romantically dark in the winter and full of sunshine on the cozy terrace in the summer and everything that is served on the table is the walk up more than worth it (car-free
hence the peace and quiet and the crowds of people)
but what we do know is that the Limburg pie and/or a specialty beer(s) tastes even better upstairs
Boscafé 't Hijgend Hert
At Shed 81 in Margraten they know about it
The former potato warehouse on Rijksweg 81 in Margraten deserved a second life
extensive sparring sessions and simply going for it
what we now know as Loods 2015 was created in 81
The vintage furnishings create an intimate living room feeling
the creativity in the dishes surprises and delights and the caterer's counter provides even more tasty food
deli dishes and buffets prepared in your own kitchen
Or make an extensive stop with all kinds of goodies from the seasonally dependent menu with coffee
Just check if you at the right time at the right place because the kitchen is not open for reservations every day..
Shed 81
we'll tell it once and you'll never forget it
a forgotten village a stone's throw from Maastricht and the place where Heerdeberg estate can be found
And that estate is what makes Cadier en Keer so much fun
And a holiday home (check one further below for more)
in the end the bottom line is that Landgoed Heerdeberg is always a good idea
Even if only to taste the delicacies from the (outdoor) kitchen
The Heerdeberg estate cooks and lives according to the rhythm of the seasons
What the estate offers can be found fresh on the plate
Vegetables and herbs picked from your own garden
a bunch of foraging and walking animals between all the festivities and before you know it you will be under the tiles for an entire afternoon
Heerdeberg estate
but in the same village (at the foot of the Heerdeberg Estate just mentioned) you can also continue to nap
the beds are spread out for you and the freshly picked finds from the fruit trees in (practically) the back garden are ready for you
With the warm welcome of free-range Mergelland fowl holiday home Theodorus quite an idyllic spot
Not a bad idea to spend a weekend or midweek with about 4 people in total
And what if you hear that you can sleep in an old fire station
Especially when it's as handsome as this one in Limburg (always fun) Mechelen
A part of the Old Fire Station has been converted into homes and a considerable space has been furnished - completely delicious - into a true holiday paradise
The Old Fire Station
even more beautiful things Mechelen and secretly (we'll just say it honestly) even more beautiful
you know what: lodge style on the outside and not only that
Well hidden at the end of a dead-end dirt road
now transformed into a beautiful modern and beautifully bright living space
houses twelve bedrooms and no less than fourteen bathrooms
Claim everything for yourself or get involved with a fun club as soon as everything is possible again
The Splendid Finch
This pop-up restaurant is practically around the corner
Just be careful that we don't start rambling about Hei 15 out of sheer enthusiasm..
Hei 15
And the most beautiful village in the Netherlands is…BookmarkBookmarkBy Victoria SévenoAug 21, 2020The results from the Royal Dutch Touring Club’s (ANWB) survey have been revealed, and the Groningen village of Winsum has been named the most beautiful village in the Netherlands
Winsum is said to have stood out as a winner because of its friendly and welcoming centre
and the lively village atmosphere and amenities
with its various architectural styles from different centuries
calling the village a “journey through time.” The mayor acknowledged the fact that Winsum has faced a number of challenges
but that the local residents are what make Winsum such a gem
"It is certainly not our intention for everyone to travel en masse to Winsum now
That way the village would soon lose its friendly character"
"But be sure to stop by if you're in the area.”
3.000 people in the Netherlands voted in the ANWB survey
This selection was then narrowed down to a shortlist: Urk (Flevoland)
The final winner was chosen by a jury consisting of Jaap Evert Abrahamse of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands
and cabaret artist and language expert Wim Daniëls
If you’re interested in finding out more about Winsum and the 49 other nominated villages, then you’re in luck. The ANWB has compiled a book of the 50 most beautiful villages in the Netherlands.
2020 Photo: Headscarf via Wikimedia CommonsPhoto: Headscarf via Wikimedia CommonsThe village of Winsum in the north of Groningen province has been named prettiest village in the Netherlands by motoring organisation ANWB
drawn up via an online vote involving 30,000 people
Winsum saw off rivals such as Urk in Flevoland and Elsloo in Limburg and took the prize because of its authentic town centre
its cafes and the mix of architectural styles in its harbour
11 of the prettiest Dutch villages which are not too over-run by tourists
It is the first time the ANWB has held such a competition and it coincides with a new ANWB book about the Netherlands’ best villages
Local mayor Henk Jan Bolding said the award is down to the villagers who keep it alive
‘We have to deal with challenges like damage from gas extraction and an elderly population,’ he said
‘But we have some real jewels.’
