Apollo Tyres Ltd, headquartered in Gurugram
has announced its intention to halt production at its Enschede manufacturing plant in the Netherlands by mid-2026
This strategic move comes in response to ongoing cost challenges and evolving market dynamics that have impacted the company’s European operations
The company cited sustained increases in energy and labour costs
coupled with weakening demand for specific product categories—such as Spacemaster and agricultural tyres—as key reasons for the decision
intensified price competition from lower-cost manufacturers has made continued operations at Apollo Tyres Netherlands BV (ATNL) financially unsustainable
the company noted that the elevated cost environment is unlikely to improve in the foreseeable future
ruling out the possibility of restoring long-term viability at the site
is engaged in the production of tyres for both passenger and agricultural vehicles
the Dutch operation generated ₹1,463.6 crore in revenue—around 5.8% of the company’s total consolidated revenue
The unit’s net worth stood at ₹1,166.7 crore
contributing 8.4% to the group’s overall net worth
“Submitting our proposal to the Works Council has been an incredibly difficult step,” he said
“Despite various cost-saving initiatives over recent years
ongoing inflation and structural pressures left us with limited options
discontinuing production emerged as the only viable path forward.”
Employees were informed of the proposed closure during a town hall meeting
and Apollo Tyres has reiterated its commitment to supporting its workforce through the transition
The company also plans to maintain transparent communication with all key stakeholders
to ensure minimal disruption to business continuity
The proposal remains subject to consultation with the Works Council and final approval from the company’s supervisory board
Apollo Tyres is recognized for its advanced technology in tire design and manufacturing
which contributes to improved safety and fuel efficiency
The company’s focus on research and development
supports its ongoing efforts to deliver reliable and cutting-edge tire solutions to customers around the world

CNV union official Nicole Engmann said workers at the factory had done all they could to stave off disaster
The closure is the “latest example of how the Netherlands is losing its industry,” she said

Apollo Tyres now aims to ensure a smooth transition for employees and stakeholders while adjusting its European strategy
India’s Apollo Tyres will stop production at its Enschede plant in the Netherlands by summer 2026
and shrinking demand for certain tyre segments
The move marks a major strategic shift for the company
as its Dutch operations contributed nearly 6 per cent to total revenues last year
Apollo Tyres Ltd stated that “these factors, with pricing pressures from low-cost competitors, render manufacturing at Apollo Tyres Netherlands BV (ATNL) uncompetitive.” The company added that the cost pressures are likely to continue
making long-term operations at the Enschede plant unsustainable
run by the company’s Dutch unit (ATNL)
Even though the company tried to reduce costs
rising inflation cancelled out the benefits

“Submitting the Request for Advice to the Works Council on the intended decision to discontinue production has been enormously challenging,” said Benoit Rivallant
we saw no other option than to recommend the discontinuation of the production activities at Enschede.”
The company has informed its employees via a town hall meeting and assured its commitment to supporting them through this transition
It will continue to consult the Works Council and seek approval from its supervisory board before finalising the move
Customers and suppliers will be kept updated to ensure business continuity
Apollo Tyres NL BV has announced its intention to discontinue tyre production at its Enschede plant in The Netherlands by the summer of 2026
submitted for advice to the Work’s Council
follows a deep dive into the company’s operational challenges
and a stubbornly persistent inflation monster — Apollo’s Enschede operations found themselves squeezed from all sides
Add to that a shrinking demand for Spacemaster and agricultural tyres
and growing pressure from low-cost competitors
and you have the perfect recipe for unsustainable manufacturing
“We left no stone unturned to cut costs and improve efficiency
discontinuing production was the only viable option.”
Apollo Tyres isn’t abandoning ship overnight though
and partners that business will continue as usual during the transition
Employee support measures and consultations with the Work’s Council are already in motion

hinges on the completion of consultation processes and supervisory board approvals

Aiming to improve the wellbeing of local citizens
UT scientists are working directly with the inhabitants and municipality of Enschede
In a case study focused on the Twekkelerveld neighborhood
researchers are asking the locals to help design changes to the city landscape
wishes and challenges of the citizens,’ says Carmen Anthonj
Associate Professor at ITC Faculty and lead of the research
the study involving Enschede citizens relates to bigger projects focused on the role of green and blue spaces and their impact on people’s wellbeing
There are many benefits of green and blue spaces in cities
They can also be used for retaining water and therefore prevent flooding
the spaces have restorative effects on people’s health leading to less stress and anxiety
higher productivity and more positive emotions
‘Green and blue spaces also increase social cohesion in the area because they bring people together,’ adds Javier Martinez from ITC
‘They offer more possibilities for physical activity because they provide more attractive places for people to walk
The ITC scientists are running a study focused on Twekkelerveld
an Enschede neighborhood adjacent to the UT campus
‘We chose this location because of its very close proximity to the university,' states Martinez
'It's one of our direct neighbors and an important part of our community.’
it’s a very diverse and cosmopolitan area which makes it different from other neighborhoods,’ adds Anthonj
making it all the more relevant for the UT.’
also has a lot of potential to become greener
Twekkelerveld is an area with a high density of buildings compared to other parts of the city,’ clarifies Anthonj
‘Another reason for selecting Twekkelerveld is its diverse community
Access to public blue and green spaces is beneficial for all
particularly in areas with disadvantaged groups where there may be fewer private gardens.’
which relates to research on Co-Designing Climate-Sensitive Blue and Green Spaces with Vulnerable Urban Populations
a collaboration project funded under the VU-UT Alliance and Coalition Responsible Societies
The study also aligns with the broader goals of the Horizon Europe project WISER (Well-Being in a Sustainable Economy Revisited)
Associate Professor of Urban Quality of Life and Inequalities at ITC Faculty
WISER focuses on the role of green and blue spaces and their impact on people’s well-being
particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds
The UT researchers are already closely collaborating with the municipality and
they plan to directly involve the local citizens
‘We want to co-design public blue and green spaces with residents based on their own needs and desires
We are very interested in understanding their perspectives on the built and natural environment
and how it impacts their wellbeing,’ says Martinez
And they will be applying the latest technologies
we will use a new AI tool from UrbanistAI through which the participants can easily indicate what they would like to change in their neighborhood
The tool displays photos of Twekkelerveld and allows the people to directly change these photos
‘It’s very easy to use even though what’s behind it is very elaborate
It’s a great tool to communicate with the people and see what they need in terms of green and blue spaces.’
The case study will run for about a year and ‘dive deep’ into the needs of the neighborhood
‘We decided to not focus on the whole city because every neighborhood in Enschede is very unique
People strongly identify with their neighborhood
This sense of belonging is very important because by improving the environment
and feeling responsible for the quality of their neighborhood
people also improve their entire community.’
‘We see this as an opportunity to bring citizens and decision-makers closer together’
the Enschede municipality is very interested in the results of the study
‘They especially appreciate the co-design approach
They already involve citizens in the planning and decision-making process
but it is often difficult to get them to participate,’ says Anthonj
‘We see this as an opportunity to bring citizens and decision-makers closer together
We hope to provide input for the city’s plans and planning.’
The scientist also hopes to raise awareness about the different needs of the many population subgroups
‘Even just one neighborhood is a very diverse community
but different groups of people are often not considered,’ points out Anthonj
the UT research aims to understand the challenges
and to pilot a new approach to decision making
‘We want to know what problems they face and how blue and green spaces can improve their wellbeing,’ says Martinez
‘I see the project as a good opportunity to practice the engagement with our direct neighbors
with our community – both with the residents and the municipality.’

A 25-year-old man from Rijssen passed away on Thursday after he had become unwell during the Enschede Marathon, Tubantia reported
The man completed the half marathon on Sunday before collapsing after the finish line due to heart issues
The heart issues led to him being resuscitated after the finish and then slipping into a coma for four days, RTV Oost reported.

This was the 55th edition of the Enschede Marathon
Around 18,000 people participated in the running event
It was reported last week that a doctor had warned runners and members of the crowd in the Rotterdam Marathon, which also took place last weekend, to watch out for signs of heat stroke in participants
Apollo Tyres announced Friday that it will close the historic Vredestein factory in Enschede in the summer of 2026, citing high energy costs and inflation. About 500 workers will lose their jobs at the more than century-old plant, according to NOS.
The Indian parent company informed employees during a staff meeting Friday afternoon
confirming fears that had been reportedly growing among the workforce
The closure marks another chapter in what unions describe as the ongoing erosion of industrial production in the Netherlands
“This is a black day,” FNV union representative Monique Daamen said to NOS
“It is deeply sad for workers who have often worked there for generations.” Daamen blamed the closure partly on what she called “failing industrial policy in the Netherlands.”
CNV union official Nicole Engmann said employees at Vredestein had done everything in their power in recent years to prevent a worst-case scenario
it turns out that was not enough,” Engmann said to NOS
She called the closure “yet another example of industrial decline in the Netherlands,” adding
high energy costs and inflation have played a role in the decision to relocate production to another country
a significant amount of employment disappears from our country
there is a role for the government to level the Dutch competitive position.”
The company’s decision follows years of warning signs
According to its most recent annual report
Apollo Tyres had already transferred sales operations and other assets from Apollo Tyres Vredestein to its European division in Hungary about a year and a half ago
Workers were first alerted Thursday to attend a meeting Friday afternoon
Many feared the worst after learning that Apollo Tyres CEO Benoit Rivallant would be present
Trade unions were not allowed to attend the in-person meeting
but were informed beforehand through a digital briefing
Municipal leaders expressed dismay at the loss of one of the city’s historic employers
“It is really an unpleasant surprise,” said Enschede Mayor Roelof Bleker
Bleker acknowledged that the news was not entirely unexpected
energy-intensive production location,” he said to NOS of the factory
“I think all possibilities have been investigated to keep the location open
Bleker described the situation as “dramatic” for the employees
A special neighborhood was once built for them,” he said
the mayor expressed hope that all affected workers would find new employment within the next year
Companies are growing and looking for people,” he said
and you’re going to stay in Enschede for a while during the summer
then it might be a good idea to plan some small day trips
Not to say Enschede has nothing to offer – our city is quite lovely and quaint
but sometimes you just want to get out for the sake of getting out
With the summer comes the perfect time to leave Enschede for a little while to experience some more of what the region has to offer
a perfect city for a day trip from EnschedeMost trips within the Netherlands can be day trips if you plan them accordingly
so I could have listed every place in the Netherlands reachable by train from Enschede
from the station than just using the usual modes of public transport
especially for a day trip (at just € 4,55)
and you’ll never want any other public transport once you have a trusty bike by your side
Located a half-hour bike ride from Enschede
Gronau is a really close German town to the East of Enschede (perks of living super close to the border
Going to Gronau by bike is the definition of a day trip: you can take some really scenic routes and experience a great deal of nature on your bike
there’s a nice free zoo you can visit for an hour or two (with wallabies/kangaroos!)
and there’s comparatively cheaper food available
I recently went and visited some of the parks
and of course ate some nice food at the end (a little Asian restaurant called Asia Haus
really good food) all in the span of around 5 hours
If you’re planning on going here to check out some of Germany
While you could technically cycle the 20 kilometers from Enschede
I’d really just take the train if I were you
Bad Bentheim is a small town near the border
and you can take a train from either Enschede or Hengelo if you live closer
A must see in Bad Bentheim is its famous castle
as well as the town’s various churches and gothic architecture
then Bad Bentheim’s the ideal day trip to make
You could also make this trip if you’re already in Gronau and want to bike a bit further ;)
though this time I would implore you to take the train (unless you really want to bike
with a bustling population and a university
There’s lots to do here: from gazing at architecture and exploring the city
to experiencing Münster’s night life – if there’s one thing I’m sure of
You could take a stroll along the Prinzipalmarkt and ogle at the gabled buildings
Lambert’s Church a bit further along and view the inside
and finally wander about the Rathaus (town hall)
I would recommend stopping by the rooftop cafe
for a little break between exploring the city – aside from some nice coffee
the cafe offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the historic city
If you get the chance to visit the city during Christmas time
then the Münster Christmas Markets are a must visit
so you can’t go wrong with any of them – one of the advantages of living in a small yet well-connected country
Deventer is around an hour away from Enschede
so enough to sightsee and be back in time for dinner
One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands
and some of the coziest shops I’ve ever been in
Deventer is apparently famous for its cookies
which I’m ashamed to say have not yet tried
Deventer also hosts the Deventer Bookmarket (usually on the first Sunday of August)
which is fitting for a city so historically important for its printing businesses
If you want to change things up a little and get away from Enschede for just a little bit
About half an hour away from Deventer is Zwolle
the transport hub of the Eastern Netherlands – you’re well connected to just about every major city if you find yourself in Station Zwolle
you can rent a boat and sightsee the city from its canals and check out the inner city right after
There’s a great bookstore called Van der Velde
which is located in a church and also serves as a cafe
Zwolle is well-known for its restaurants – why not treat yourself and have a picturesque dinner by the city center
where you can also gaze at the magnificent Grote Kerk
From museums and architecture-marvelling to shopping
Zwolle is always a place I look forward to visiting
Het Rutbeek is a lake in the South of Enschede
but it’s far enough from the city that you can officially call it a day trip if you decide to go there
and not by taxi (you know exactly who you are)
and you’ll be treated by a really nice route filled with greenery and nature
you can do your typical lake activities: go for a swim
and have a nice big barbecue with your friends
so grab your friends and drag them to Het Rutbeek
Grab the opportunity for a trip now while the school year is over
Hopefully you have a great day in any location you choose for a day trip
It is already mid-winter and the holidays are just around the corner
there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy
Whether you prefer heading out or staying indoors
these are the best winter activities in and around Enschede
Enschede Lights Up Festival - Photo by Emiel Muijderman1
in December you can always lace up your skates on the ice rink on the Oude Markt during Winters Enschede
skate a few laps and warm up afterwards with a drink in the café
did you know you can still enjoy a drink on the terrace in winter
Order a hot chocolate while enjoying the charming view of the ice rink
you can enjoy the most beautiful light projections in the centre of Enschede
which is also the starting point of the walking route
Enschede Lights Up takes place from 12 to 15 December
Do you also find it such a pity that many friends and housemates head back home for the holidays
Then why not organise a Christmas dinner with all your friends and housemates here in Enschede
Ask everyone to bring a dish and decorate your house with lights and decorations
Don't forget to play Mariah Carey and throw on a cheesy Christmas jumper and your evening is complete
In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is a traditional holiday that is extensively celebrated
Playing a Sinterklaas game with housemates or friends is a nice activity for an evening of fun
You roll a dice to determine whether you steal
Then the Wilminktheater is the place to be
there are lots of great Christmas performances there
From traditional shows and musicals to Christmas concerts and comedy shows
but there are also nice performances that are not language-dependent
a trip to Intratuin may not sound too exciting at first
but especially during the winter months it is really worth it
The shop is fully decorated in Christmas style
It’s the perfect place to get inspired and buy Christmas decorations or a mini Christmas tree for your room
You can even book a Christmas high tea or grab an oliebol (Dutch deep-fried pastry) at the stand outside
there is nothing better than watching Christmas movies
get snacks and hot chocolate (or bake your own Christmas cookies) and put on your favourite Christmas movies
Classics like Home Alone and The Polar Express are a must
the Ice Sculpture Festival showcases stunning ice creations
this year the Ice Sculpture Festival no longer takes place in Zwolle
but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile
If you have a day off and don't mind travelling a bit
the ultimate winter activity is probably skiing or snowboarding in the snow
because just 2.5 hours away from Enschede you'll find Winterberg: perfect for a weekend getaway
If you don't have the time or budget to go to Winterberg
visit one of the indoor ski halls in the Netherlands instead
Here you will find an artificial slope where you can ski and snowboard or take lessons
Dutch police have released camera footage of a wild police chase in Enschede. The chase was ended when a police car smashed into the vehicle. The suspect was arrested by officers when he jumped out of the car and tried to flee on foot. The 24-year-old man from Poland was unharmed, NOS reported
Police footage shows the end of a chase that lasted for 75 kilometers between Apeldoorn and Enschede
The chase started on Monday evening when a car was stolen in Utrecht
The owner alerted the police shortly after this
The driver was asked to stop on two occasions but ignored the plea
which resulted in a chase that went up to 190 kilometers an hour
It included police vehicles ramming into the car
the suspect driving on the wrong side of the road
A police dog was used to arrest the suspect when he tried to flee
He is currently still in custody for theft
Police have stated that they will share more footage from the chase
This comes a day after a stolen vehicle was hit by a train in Berghem near Oss, which resulted in two men losing their lives. This had also been preceded by a police chase.

and don’t forget a deep-clean of your oven
Make sure to clean out your winter clothes while you’re at it
This will give you a great excuse to go shopping for new spring outfits later ;)
Thrift shopping has been on the rise in recent years
who love everything that’s cheap and readily available
That’s why I’ve compiled a list of my go-to thrift shops in Enschede
for the students who love clothes but don’t know yet where to get them secondhand
Kringloopwarenhuis Het GoedDefinitely a popular one among students
especially those who live in the city centre and on campus
Het Goed offers a decent selection of clothes
since it’s directly on the way from campus to the city and nearby other useful shops
I’ve found a bunch of goodies there – from extremely cheap Edifier speakers to extremely cheap office chairs
You’ll probably find the thing you didn’t know you needed right here
Apple & Ei offers a very nice collection of clean and fashionable second-hand clothes
I also appreciate that they sort by colour (and I think
and you can find clothing from the most random brands to some fairly high-end ones
or donate your clothes to charity through them if they end up being unsold
While some of these stores do sell vintage items
SPITS Vintage has a clear definition of what counts as vintage: their pieces
so most clothes come from the 20th century
I was a little hesitant about this one because it literally looks like a warehouse
but when I walked in and saw the endless collections of everything
I mean everything: there are rooms upon rooms of different stuff
from ceramics to jewellery to old instruments and albums
It’s definitely a little unorganised (some rooms are very chaotic)
but I think that adds to the warehouse vibe
but some friends have given me their opinion on it
All that’s made me feel is that I have to go visit sooner rather than later
because the clothes I saw were truly thrift-shoppy
my friends told me their little cafe is also very good
so feel free to munch on a sandwich while browsing their wares
ThriftTale is a pretty well-known webshop that has a physical store in Enschede as well
Although their collections are pretty good and seasonal
I’ve found that their prices are a bit on the higher end of thrift shops
that my favourite autumn coat came from ThriftTale
All Terre Des Hommes stores in the Netherlands are run by volunteers
who make sure that the money from their shops goes to charity; their mission is to fight and stop child exploitation
They’ve got the standard collection for thrift shops: clothes
They’ve also got a very nice assortment of jewellery and decorations
other second-hand shops in Enschede that I haven’t visited
which are basically right next to each other
and they have a pretty rad collection from what I hear
fitting in with Enschede's history with textiles and fabric
a lot of closet sales and vintage kilo sales are held throughout the city as well
Under the name 'Enschede Student Movement'
UT students want to get a local student union off the ground in Enschede
The initiative is supported by the National Student Union
Other student cities have had local unions for many years that are part of the federation of the National Student Union (LSVb)
Think of the Amsterdam ASVA or the Groninger Studentenbond
To date, Enschede does not have such a union. A group of UT students wants to change that. There is currently a WhatsApp group with fourteen students
two of whom are in direct contact with the LSVb
The ball started rolling after the realization that Enschede does not have its own student union
'That coincides with the current momentum of the student movement
This movement is very strong at the moment and has already got the long-term studying fine off the table through campaigning.'
But there are more problems than the long-term studying fine
from too high a workload to sky-high study costs
which means that students in The Netherlands already have to work more than anywhere else in Europe.'
A union should help students come together
in order to get students' ideas and concerns on the agenda
The idea is that such a local union forms a collective voice to
housing and student wellbeing at the university
in a broader sense: 'A better Enschede for every student'
The 'Enschede Student Movement' is still an action group
The long-term goal is to set up a student union
One of the first steps towards this is a meeting
The LSVb will also explain student union movements
how they work and what people can do for them
International students face higher rents per square metre than Dutch students
according to the Dutch Student Union (LSVb)
The housing market is also less welcoming to non-domestic students
Eén op de vijf uitwonende studenten heeft ramen van enkelglas
Milieuorganisaties en studentenvakbond LSVb willen dat hun huur vanaf 2024 wordt verlaagd
One in five students living independently have single-glazed windows
Environmental organisations and the Dutch Student Union (LSVb) are now calling for a rent reduction for these students from 2024 onwards
Tientallen studenten hebben zich gemeld bij de Landelijke Studentenvakbond vanwege hun stijgende energierekening
Ze kunnen geen aanspraak maken op compensatie door de overheid en komen in de financiële problemen
Dozens of students have notified the Dutch Student Union (LSVb) about their rising energy bills
They cannot apply for government compensation and are getting into financial problems
The language used in the demonstration in Enschede is almost entirely English
This is typical of the staff and students of the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences
The activists present do not understand a government that speaks of innovation as a 'solution for just about everything' and at the same time cuts innovative higher education in the east of the Netherlands
which is strongly internationally oriented. The world doesn't end at Glanerbrug

two of the five faculties of the UT are already in dire straits

Student and member of the PvdA parliament in Overijssel Emma Peetsma agrees
“I have noted the word 'innovation' in the coalition agreement

a lecturer and policy officer at Saxion University of Applied Sciences
thinks it is a shame that the unions involved seem to be mobilizing the universities in particular
He works in Apeldoorn and is the only one from his team who traveled to Enschede for the actions
“I did get a lot of thumbs up in the app group.”
Verwijmeren expects that the cuts will also affect HBO
but certainly also through the disastrous policy regarding international students
I am seriously concerned about our English-language programs and our international colleagues
My students will be working in the international hotel management field.”

"But I also want to continue studying here," he says
The fellow students look at each other laughing
Ryan continues bravely: “I don’t really get involved in politics
but if they go on strike everywhere I assume there is a problem.”
In The Hague the AOb and other educational organizations today presented a manifesto to members of the Senate: 'Don't do it
Stop the disastrous cuts in higher education
they are bad for the whole of the Netherlands.'

because for a fixed amount you can buy a cheap group ticket for up to 5 people
The location makes this Christmas market very unique
as it takes place on the grounds of Bentheim Castle
you can also visit the exhibition rooms of the castle itself
The Christmas market is open from Friday to Sunday and entrance costs €8
Bad Bentheim is easy to reach by train: from Enschede
What makes this market so special is its location: most of it takes place in the underground marlstone caves of Valkenburg
Christmas lights and light sculptures that create a magical atmosphere
you have to buy tickets for around €10 each
The Christmas market in Valkenburg is very popular
Valkenburg is quite a journey from Enschede
but it’s well worth it if you make a weekend trip out of it
or combine it with a visit to the Christmas market in Maastricht or Aachen
One of the best (and biggest!) Christmas markets in Germany can be found in Düsseldorf
Scattered throughout the city are seven Christmas markets
it offers a fantastic view of the entire city
Then go ice-skating on the ice rink and warm up with chocolate milk or glühwein afterwards

Perfect for a cosy afternoon or evening with friends
Four UT researchers are hosting a local ‘Pint of Science’ festival at the Twentsche Foodhal on 19 and 21 May
The event combines a ‘relaxed atmosphere with cool science’
says PhD student and one of the organisers
‘It’s a non-profit organisation which originally started in the UK in 2012
I lived in the UK for a bit and the initiative is quite well-known there and I loved to visit them
I noticed there wasn’t a local Pint of Science
while it was there in other cities in the Netherlands
So I texted the national organisation and joined forces with three UT colleagues to set up a local Enschede event.’
‘It’s meant to bring researchers to the pub around the corner
So it should at least have a relaxed atmosphere
since a lot of people love to go to a bar or pub
We hope to combine that with science; that attendees are able to find out about some interesting fields of research and learn cool things
We’re all used to technical talks at conferences
‘Since this is the first time we’re hosting this in Enschede, we’re starting small with two events
which is about volcanoes and artificial intelligence
That one is about rollercoasters and earth observation
we hope to cater to both an international and local audience.’
Pint of Science is an annual non-profit science festival
meant to communicate scientific developments to the public by having scientists giving talks in public spaces like pubs and bars
The festival takes place in May and was hosted across more than 400 cities and 25 countries last year
This is the first time the festival takes place in Enschede
The local festival is hosted by four UT researchers: Max Winkelmann
Anne Rikhof and Anthony Thornton from the ET faculty and Amin Shakya from the ITC faculty
especially if you consider developments like budget cuts and polarisation… This is a way to share to people about why they pay tax money to fund research – and what important work is being done with that money.'
We just hope that everyone who attends the events has a good time
It was important for us to start small; while I lived in Edinburgh
there were at least five Pint of Science events every day during the festival
We hope this first edition will be received positively and we’ll see where it goes from there.’

University is the perfect time to pick up a new skill
I’m not gonna be getting any Michelin stars any soon
My favourite dishes are traditional dishes from back home in Indonesia
but I had no idea where to get ingredients – at first
and are unsure of where to get ingredients
Enschede has some pretty nice foreign goods stores where you can get most of everything you’re craving
Read on for a compilation of my favourite international stores and restaurants in Enschede
Asian Stores There are two Asian stores I frequent, and that’s more than enough for me. The one I shop at the most is called Peter Hu
and you can find all your traditional Asian ingredients here
all your Eastern vegetables – when I first came here
The reason why I shop here more often is because this store also sells cheap homemade tofu
The other Asian store I shop at is called Toko Het Oosten
which is conveniently located in the city centre
with all your essential sauces and dry ingredients
and I’d recommend Toko Het Oosten purely because it’s in the city centre and within walking distance of most things in the city
that homemade tofu in Peter Hu just can’t be beaten
I’ll go out of my way and bike those extra two minutes to get there
Although not in Enschede, Amazing Oriental is extremely popular among international students
All their locations are pretty far from Enschede
so you’d have to make a trip by train to get there
and if we happen to see an Amazing Oriental as we’re walking
ADA also has a dedicated stand for Baklava
with a variety of flavours and shapes priced by kilogram
so make sure you don’t go too overboard with the shopping
There are also several Turkish restaurants in Enschede. The one I frequent the most is Eethuis Zeytin
The other restaurants are scattered around the city
although the big ones you see near the restaurant area in the city centre are a bit pricier than Zeytin
Also of note: I also do my shopping for protein in Turkish shops
Things like chicken and beef are usually cheaper here than in your typical supermarket chains
I’d recommend you to do the same if you’re a student ;)
Located near Toko Het Oosten in the city centre is a Surinamese shop called Toko Switi
We’ve made hallacas and arepas with ingredients from this store
so I’d say it has its fair share of South American ingredients
then swing by on Fridays or Saturdays – Toko Switi makes Surinamese snacks and sandwiches to take away
More a department store than a grocery shop or Toko, Majenis Tropical Centre sells everything from wigs and cosmetics to art pieces
This store also sells a variety of ingredients and food
and not just African – Caribbean food is sold here as well
They have this really good bag of plantain chips tastes amazing
so make sure to swing by if you’re nearby in the city centre
but I’ve been too afraid to go in after looking at their prices
Maybe once I graduate I’ll treat myself to some delicious Patagonian steak
A sudden explosion in an electric vehicle parked in the Irenegarage above the Jumbo supermarket on Noorderhagen led to the full evacuation of the store and the adjacent Irene Promenade shopping center Saturday evening, Tubantia reports. The blast
reportedly caused significant panic and released toxic smoke across parts of the city center
The incident occurred shortly before closing time
“We came up from the store and saw only smoke—you couldn’t see your own hand,” Jumbo employee Cas
“All customers and employees were asked to leave
The white electric car was parked in a designated charging area in the Irenegarage
Authorities have not confirmed whether the vehicle was actively charging at the time
“It’s still unclear what exactly caused the explosion
but we suspect the battery was the source,” said a spokesperson from the fire department
The vehicle was reportedly almost completely destroyed in the fire
Firefighters escalated the alert level to a “large fire” due to the location in the busy city center and the involvement of an electric car
Multiple fire engines were dispatched to the scene
Though the flames were extinguished quickly
the car was burned out entirely and later removed from the garage and submerged in a dunk tank to safely cool the battery
two cashiers and their supervisor stood in the cold
“Our jackets are still inside,” a Jumbo employee told Tubantia
“I was just scanning items when it happened
The fire released toxic smoke that reportedly spread through Noorderhagen and Van Lochemstraat
A concerned man rushed toward the firefighters
“How many cars are burning?” He later said
“I wish I had never parked it there.” His car had been parked right next to the one that exploded
only one vehicle is confirmed to have burned so far
though other cars may have sustained damage
The Irene Promenade shopping center was shut down entirely for the night
Jumbo reportedly confirmed to Tubantia that the store would remain closed due to possible light smoke damage
No injuries were reported in the explosion
While not the coldest in the northern hemisphere
but the long spells of single-digit temperatures
the lack of sunlight and vitamin D can take a toll
I’ll share tips for surviving the Dutch winter
What to expect from Dutch winterYou’ll know that winter is knocking on your doorstep once the days become grey
wearing a trench coat and some light outerwear
with the winds howling like wolves pushing against your bike
and rain splattering against the ground like the rapid crescendo of a drum
Average temperatures will range about 3 degrees Celsius
sometimes dropping down to below zero once the sun is down
The number of sun-hours will also decrease: an average day during the winter is around 8 hours
where in the summer the sun rose early and set well into the evening
Next are tips on how to actually survive the winter
Layering is simple: wear enough to stay warm without feeling restricted
saving heavier jackets for outdoor commutes
Start with thermal underwear or long johns
which provide warmth both outside and indoors
I prefer jackets with hoods to protect my ears
Scarves are both stylish and functional for extra warmth
and good gloves are crucial for biking in cold weather
While I don’t use specialized shoes (probably why my shoes look horrible after every winter)
consider rain or winter boots if you want better protection
which are useful for keeping your lap dry in heavy rain
Don’t trap yourself in your room or accommodation: winter blues are definitely a thing and can cause seasonal depression
Make sure that you’re out with people you’re comfortable with whenever you feel like you’re getting cooped up with yourself
Remember to take care of yourself: exercise
You probably need more rest during the winter than outside of it
If you’re part of a club or study association
make sure you hang out with them and do activities together
then consider wintery activities like ice skating or making s’mores
You can watch Christmas-y movies and play board games
If you don’t feel like interacting with other people
You can take it as the perfect time to cozy up your room: warm up a cup of hot chocolate or coffee
This is more of a personal tip, but if you’re finding it hard to stay upbeat at home, consider spending your workdays on campus
The campus of the University of Twente looks beautiful with a blanket of snow over it
staying on campus forces me to get my work done
Some cases of winter blues can really just be a lack of vitamin D
go for a walk and bask in the sunlight (if you’re free and it’s not raining)
you can take vitamin D supplements to help you if you’re really feeling gloomy
orange light in my room (as opposed to a harsh yellow or white one) really helps substitute the lost sunlight
SAD (seasonal active disorder) lamps also exist
take the time to do some wintery activities with friends
This can be anything: from going to Christmas markets to Secret Santa with your people
The winter months are the perfect time to bake and try new
Gather around a fireplace if you happen to find one and enjoy the moment with friends around you – friends
That’s really all that helped me get through what would have been an unimaginably lonely first winter
I surrounded myself with good, fun people, and had a blast getting through the cold with them. Really embrace the concept of winter, and the concept of the Dutch word gezellig - which you can read more about in this article
I get this vivid image in my mind: huddled around a fireplace with friends
with hot chocolate and sweets and good food nearby
The winter is the perfect time for gezelligheid
even when it doesn’t seem so at first: you just have to find your people

UT employees are laying down their work today as part of the relay strike against cuts to higher education
we'll keep you updated on the latest developments

UT employees on the Oude Markt are engaging in conversation with passersby
There will also be a table with cupcakes and games for children
ITC researcher Carissa Champlin asks people about topics they think are important and that UT should do more research on
A new lecture is scheduled every 15 minutes
including about membranes for clean drinking water and the 'bicycle of the future'
A bystander watching the activities hopes the strike has an impact
'I am from The Hague and work in education myself
I'm interested and will engage in conversation with the people standing here in the square.'
The crowd has been at the Oude Markt for a while now
Where previously there were about four hundred people on the O&O square
the crowd in the city centre seems somewhat thinned out
'I expected more of a crowd at the Oude Markt
I was at the O&O Square myself this morning
Especially for the fired S&T employees

She does call it disappointing that UT calls this day a protest action and not a strike
despite the fact that there are not many students
They may not fully realize how important this is for education
I'd also like to see more engagement with the municipality.'
The crowd has left campus and is making its way to the Oude Markt via Hengelosestraat
where strikers from the university of applied sciences are joining them
Passing drivers honk their horns in sympathy to the UT employees

I certainly wouldn't call it a win-win situation
It's more about making the best of a lose-lose situation.'
While the O&O square is filling up more and more, UT professor Arend Rensink performs the self-written protest song. Familiar to many who were also present last November: 'In dit rot-regeerakkoord

We made a summary of six questions and answers about this strike day
there is a stage and a first aid stand and French fries stand have also been taken into account
The O&O square is ready to receive a crowd
Organization of the strike is in the hands of trade unions FNV and AOb, together with action group Twente For Protest (WOinActie) and the Enschede Student Movement
This morning they try to mobilize and inform as many people as possible through picket lines and information stands
The plenary programme starts at 11:30 a.m.
A first group of strikers reported to the main entrance at 8 a.m
We hope to achieve that in Enschede as well.'

FC Twente has been handed a severe punishment by the UEFA for racist and discriminatory comments during their match in the UEFA Europa League against SS Lazio
Footage showed Lazio winger Loum Tchaouna complaining to the team's bench about the racism after he was substituted in the match
The club from Enschede will have to close a part of its stadium for fans in its next home match in the competition against the Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise on November 28
The club was also issued a fine of 83,125 euros for the mishap during the Lazio match
which included people in the crowd throwing drinking cups onto the field and unfurling an offensive banner
"According to UEFA, it has been established that supporters treated a Lazio player in a racist and discriminatory manner during the 0-2 loss
It is sad that this happened in our stadium

"The impact this has on the well-meaning supporters

The Twente for Protest action group is pulling out all the stops one more time to make a statement against the cuts in education
The group calls for a protest in front of the city hall in Enschede on Wednesday afternoon at 13:00
one of the initiators of 'Twente for Protest'
hoped to focus fully on completing her PhD again after the protest on 25 November
she wants to make her voice heard again on Wednesday
because next Thursday the decision will be made in the House of Representatives about the cuts in education
'We take our whistles and banners with us again
This time at the town hall on the Ei van Ko in Enschede
There we give one or two speeches and then we hand over a letter to the mayor Roelof Bleker
The goal is to speak to the mayor and receive support from him
At the protest in The Hague - two weeks ago - several mayors from the country were present.'
Claassen is not only targeting students and staff of the University of Twente
the initiator also wants to appeal to the wider public
'I want to bring the subject to the attention of the entire region and community
because the cuts go far beyond the universities
demonstrations have also been announced in Nijmegen

With dark clouds of austerity approaching from The Hague
about forty UT employees discussed this with each other in the Ravelijn on Thursday afternoon
we were approached by the municipality of Enschede with their wish for the realisation of housing on the UT campus
It concerns realisation of housing on a plot on Witbreuksweg
located right next to the existing student houses
it was said that the project had been put on-hold for the time being
partly in anticipation of developments in The Hague
The municipality informed neighbouring residents by letter last week of its intention to investigate the possible realisation of these houses
they wrote that ‘it concerns 100 flex homes that can be built relatively quickly
These new homes could provide a place to live for various house seekers in our municipality
young people and other one- and two-person households
Should the study lead to a positive result
the homes could also provide a place for displaced people from Ukraine
who have found a (temporary) new home in Enschede.’
UT is surprised by the communication that has taken place from the municipality about this
The Executive Board has so far only taken note of the municipality's wish
but has not yet taken a further position on it
We await further talks with the Municipality of Enschede and the housing corporation
The proposed location is the light green shape next to the parking lot
The Dutch Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Discussion Group (NMR-DG) is hosting its 59th annual meeting on Friday
The meeting is organised with the backing of the Analytical Chemistry Section of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (SAC-KNCV)

U-Today looked them up and introduces you to a few first-year students
'I'm very enthusiastic about student life here
There is therefore no doubt that I will join an association
There is an association with motorcycles and I have experience with motorcycling
One hundred percent sure that I will become a member of that association
My expectation is that it will be a lot of fun
The main choice to come to the Netherlands is because most people speak English well
my first impression of what I see now is overwhelming.'
'The fact that my programme has a collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam was very important to me
Utrecht does not offer the Creative Technology programme
I would have liked to go in that direction
so I'm going to participate in a lot of activities during the Kick-In
I'm also open to doing a lot of new things
Dat betekent dat honderden nieuwe studenten kennismaken met de UT

We are looking forward welcoming you the campus next year
given the fact that thousands of students graduate from various educational institutions in the city every year
But what are the chances that young professionals will stay in the region and what is the municipality of Enschede doing to promote this
we include students and recent graduates as a target group,' says Wouter van der Zouw
spokesperson for the municipality of Enschede
two aspects are important for settling somewhere in addition to green surroundings and an interesting job: cultural events and an attractive environment to live in
This is one of the conclusions in the report De Koers van Enschede
that was published in 2020 by Atlas Research on behalf of the same municipality
The report shows that culture is a crucial element in a city's competitiveness
Cities that offer a wide range of cultural events are considered desirable places to live in
They typically attract highly educated and creative people
If these people also have access to attractive living arrangements and neighbourhoods
a city will have met the conditions for retaining talent
the municipality also bases its insights on studies conducted by
other cities and housing corporations in Twente
'We think it is important to keep young people within our city’s boundaries
The municipality endeavours to grow towards having 170,000 inhabitants
both theoretically and practically trained
But how does Enschede score on retaining talent
According to the Compendium for the Living Environment (facts and figures about living environment within the Netherlands)
both the number of tertiary educated people and the percentage of highly-paid jobs in Enschede are relatively low in comparison with other university cities in border regions
If we look at retaining international graduates in the Netherlands
the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education
Of all internationals who are still working in the Netherlands five years after graduating (from all universities)
fewer than two percent are located in Enschede
35 percent live and work in the Amsterdam area
together with UT’s University Innovation Fellows and Novel-T
conducted a survey among more than 450 students in order to map how students experience 'sticking around' in Enschede
The outcome showed that many respondents find the Twente region pleasant and accessible
but that the city of Enschede lacks a dynamic
Nightlife in Enschede was rated particularly low by the respondents
despite the substantial number of social activities that the city has to offer
Initiatives such as the Tankstation (a non-profit
cultural organisation) were welcomed because of the sense of community-building it provides and its international character
the respondents felt that cultural events on offer in Enschede are limited and insufficiently connected to the international student community
This is aimed to boost events organised in Enschede
we specifically pay attention to the new kids on the block in the cultural landscape and young artists
Organisations for young talent can apply for subsidies.’
and the centre is a meeting place for students
The city needs to be a safe place for them
with a (more) diverse and distinctive range of shops and restaurants
Another suggestion is to create better and more accessible study places in the city centre
in the library or in other (public) buildings
A vibrant nightlife will help provide ample diversion and entertainment.'
The Action Programme advises students and youth organisations to draw up an agenda together with the city’s ‘Night Mayor’ to boost Enschede’s nightlife
it recommends that more permits for nightly activities should be issued
in September the city council chose to set up a so-called Night Council that is to advise the municipality
on issues relating to the city’s nightlife'
In order to advance Enschede as an international city
the Action Programme states that multilingual communication is imperative in public spaces
but also in businesses and institutions in the city centre
Facilities should be attractive and accessible to international visitors: for example
this may include payment facilities for (international) credit cards
'This entire area is transformed into a modern urban living and working area
with residential tower blocks that are explicitly intended for young professionals.'
two cultural locations linked to the city’s nightlife had to make way
Disco 't Bölke ceased business after the Covid-19 crisis as it is
will also have to make way for a residential tower block
This seems to be at odds with fortifying Enschede’s nightlife
most organisations that were in the demolished buildings have found new premises with the support of the municipality
It is noteworthy that the prestigious ‘Kop Boulevard’ construction plan (that stretches from the MST hospital to the city centre) came to a standstill in 2022
that featured a budget of 150 million Euros
was aimed to surpass the Zuidas district of Amsterdam in quality
the plan did not get off the ground due to increased construction costs and stalled negotiations with the project developer
although the municipality is still making plans to develop this location further
and an action programme for the city centre
the municipality of Enschede is committed to retaining talent and young people within the city
'We also keep an eye on offering good economics and a diverse range of work
housing and recreational options,' says Van der Zouw
'These topics are spearhead issues of the municipality
The input of students and recent graduates is of vital importance and therefore always included.'

While the first ground frost after the summer occurred a bit earlier than usual this year
The earliest sub-zero temperature after the summer dates from 1973
temperatures dropped to below zero at several stations on August 22 - technically still in the summer
The lowest temperature was -2.2 degrees in Twente
Since temperature measurements started in 1901

Rijkswaterstaat is investigating how it was possible that so much water remained on the A1 and A35 motorways in Enschede and Hengelo on Sunday night
but I cannot yet say anything about the exact cause of the amount of water on the highways."
Twente was struck by heavy rainfall on Sunday night
The motorways were closed off in both directions because there was a lot of water on the road
A still unknown number of road users were stranded because of this
The spokesperson said people were climbing on their cars to avoid the highly rising water
A flooded adjacent road may have caused the nuisance
but Rijkswaterstaat is now investigating whether that was the only reason
Contractors have drained the water since the incident
The roads were accessible for traffic again on Monday morning
Only the entrance and exit of the provincial road N735 at De Lutte
and parking garages were also flooded in Enschede
Although most of the water troubles in Twente are over
so we are still receiving some calls," said a spokesperson
"We are increasingly confronted with extreme weather
But we have not seen this much water at many times," the spokesperson said
The fire brigade has mainly been focused on removing the acute danger
and the spokesperson said that "cleaning up and emptying cellars is up to the people themselves."
The weather also caused damage to the train tracks with a subsidence
A spokesperson for ProRail said on Monday that the damage is "quite big" and that an engineering firm and a contractor are currently investigating how and when it can be repaired
there have been fewer trains between Sittard and Maastricht for the last day
Images show that a hole has appeared in the subsurface between the rails and the fences next to the track near Lutterade in Geleen
Express buses have been set up to replace the problems on the track
The ProRail spokeswoman said the tracks must be "out of service" when the repair work starts
no train traffic will be possible between Sittard and Maastricht
ProRail tries to plan such work at night where possible
FC Twente have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League
The club from Enschede fought back from a large deficit against Red Bull Salzburg at home to draw but came up just short: 3-3
Joseph Oosting’s team was beaten 2-1 last week by last season’s second-placed best Austrian side
FC Twente will continue their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League
The club does not have to go through the last qualifying round and is automatically ensured a spot in the main tournament
It seemed like Twente was going to have a hopeless night for a long time
Not much happened in the first ten minutes
Michel Vlap tested goalkeeper Janis Blaswich with a free kick from a distance
Red Bull took over control after this phase
Dutch manager Pepijn Lijnders's team found their way past Twente with ease
They took the lead in the 17th minute after a good pass by Oscar Gloukh
who scored a hat trick last weekend in the league
who scored via the underside of the crossbar: 0-1
Kjaergaard also scored twice last week in the match against Twente
After Moussa Kounfolo Yeo missed a huge chance to double the lead straight after the first goal
and Nene Dorgeles beat goalkeeper Lars Unnerstal with a hard shot
Twente was not showing much danger but still halved the deficit before halftime
It was not surprising that this happened through a set piece
All hope was lost at the start of the second half when Mathias Kjølø lost possession of the ball
and Kounfolo Yeo dispatched the chance: 1-3
Twente did not give up and got a goal back through Alex van Hoorenbeeck
just like Hilgers had done in the first half
They needed another two goals to force extra time
Unnerstall saved the home side 15 minutes before the end when he saved a penalty after Vlap had handballed it
The final attacks of Twente resulted in the 3-3 from substitute Sem Steijn
but the decisive goal did not come within eight minutes of injury time

student houses in Enschede prove to be hotbeds for scabies
A taboo and measures that are difficult to comply with make the infection almost impossible to fight
GGD Twente advises students to check their website and follow the guidelines closely
'You could easily call it a scabies bomb,' describes Nathalie Christenhusz
we tried to raise the issue among students by handing out flyers with playful slogans
but little seems to have changed.' Fighting the itchy skin infection seems easier said than done
Christenhusz mentions 'intensive physical contact' as one of the main causes
especially in the winter months.' Sexual contact also easily leads to infection
But the cause may be more simple: Especially female students sometimes borrow each other's clothes for a night out.' Concerts or other occasions in which the audience literally rubs shoulders for more than fifteen minutes can also be a source of infection
'And if they visit other student cities or family
it can quickly spread throughout the rest of the country.'
Master's student of Business Administration Steven Oosterkamp — as of yet uninfected himself — experienced it up close in his student house
"We sometimes share a small house with more than fifteen people
You can get it simply by sitting on the couch or chair where an infected person has been sitting
it is important that the entire student house is aware of it and adheres to the hygiene measures
The treatment can consist of applying ointment
whether or not supplemented with a pill treatment
in combination with a step-by-step laundry plan for clothing and other textiles
is a considerable expense for the average student
'Treatment with ointment can easily cost up to about fifty euros
And long-term use can have unpleasant side effects for the skin,' says Oosterkamp
Because of the stigma surrounding the infection
many students continue their daily lives without reporting it
Contaminated clothing must be stored in a hermetically sealed bin bag for three days to kill the mite
'At some point you run out of clothes,' says Oosterkamp
The washing advice for clothing also proves challenging
'A lot of clothing is not suitable for the prescribed sixty degrees wash.'
The impact of the infection on daily life is significant
Oosterkamp: 'People can't sleep because of the itching
Some avoid public places for fear of infecting others
In addition to the emotional aspect of knowing that you have scabies
it can have a significant impact on your study performance.'
Christenhusz both literally and metaphorically confirms: 'It's gets under your skin.'
Scabies is a skin infection caused by the scabies mite
This creature digs minute tunnels under the skin and lays eggs there
This causes an allergic reaction that manifests as itchy red bumps
The infection can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or fabrics
