double-ended ferries in a series built by a partnership of the Holland Shipyards Group and Polish shipyard Alumare
Built to a design by local naval architecture firm CoCo Yachts
the catamaran ferries Altena VI and Gorinchem XII will be operated by Riveer in serving the Dutch municipalities of Altena and Gorinchem
Design work on the ferries was done in compliance to Bureau Veritas class requirements
In addition to manufacturing the two ferries
the Holland Shipyards Group also provided the necessary loading infrastructure on shore as well as shore charging stations and other adjustments to the mooring facilities
and capacity for 100 passengers and 100 bicycles
Loading and unloading are done via ramps on the opposite ends of each vessel
providing a significant improvement over the earlier gangway-equipped ferries in the Riveer fleet
Because the ferries no longer need to change their orientation during berthing and unberthing
The electric propulsion system consists of EST-Floattech batteries connected to two 171kW PM motors with Veth VL-160-CR azimuthing L-drives
The new ferries were designed to help generate 1,000 to 1,600 tonnes fewer CO2 emissions compared to similar vessels
The vessels were also built to be as lightweight as possible to maximise their operating efficiency and to reduce maintenance requirements
Even their hulls were deliberately left unpainted so as not to add unnecessary weight
The wheelhouse on each ferry also boasts a high degree of automation
This allows navigation and the raising and lowering of the two ramps to be performed by only one crewmember if needed
Altena VI and Gorinchem XII have already begun operational sailings along inland routes that include their namesake municipalities as well as the municipality of Hardinxveld-Giessendam

The 41-year-old cop from Gorinchem arrested for preparing to murder her ex-husband wanted the man killed because he had abused their teenage son multiple times, multiple sources told the Telegraaf
and two other suspects are still in custody and will appear in court in mid-September
pressed charges against her ex early this year
accusing him of abusing their teenage son and youngest daughter
The 57-year-old man was arrested in January and released shortly afterward
The investigation into his alleged abuse of his son is still ongoing
the Rotterdam Public Prosecution Service (OM) told the newspaper
was not happy with the turn of events and decided to take matters into her own hands
asking for help finding a weapon or a person to kill her ex
even showed video footage of the boy being abused to the men they approached
Van E.’s minor son felt remorse and went to the police
telling them that a hitman would kill his father within days
a 19-year-old and a 42-year-old from Gorinchem
The OM suspects these women of involvement in the search for a hitman or weapon
have been released from custody but are still suspects
The other two suspects are a 19-year-old man from Ermelo and a 37-year-old man with no registered place of residence
the 19-year-old man agreed to commit the murder in exchange for 5,000 euros
and her friends approached the 37-year-old months ago
asking for help with finding a weapon or hitman
He hadn’t heard from them in months and thought the plan had been called off
and the two men are still in custody and are due to appear in court for the first time in mid-September
worked as a uniformed police officer in the Barendrecht basic team but has been home on sick leave for a long time
The police officer’s ex denies abusing his children
“My client claims that the report of abuse of his son
she also filed a report of abuse of their youngest daughter,” his lawyer
“The judge quickly concluded that there was no evidence of abuse of his youngest daughter
The investigation into the abuse of his son is still ongoing
and the OM has yet to make a decision on this case
My client was released shortly after his arrest because there was no need to detain him any longer
The OM would not comment on the Telegraaf’s information
“The investigation is still in full swing,” a spokesperson for the Rotterdam OM told the newspaper

NEWS: Long-Delayed USCG Polar Icebreaker Moves Into Full Production
and offshore wind services provider Purus Wind
have signed a contract for the construction of eight new vessels
Four Damen fast crew supplier (FCS) 2710 hybrid
three Damen FCS 3210 hybrid crew transfer vessels (CTVs)
and one 295.2' construction service operation vessel (CSOV) will be built.
The FCS 3210s and the CSOV will be equipped for ultra-low emission operations
and be designed to be upgraded to methanol-fueled engines
The order is part of Purus Wind’s strategy to be a leading provider of low-carbon
offshore wind support vessels to meet the needs of the clean energy industry as its members set out to decarbonize
The hybrid FCS 2710s will join the three other hybrids that Purus Wind’s subsidiary High-Speed Transfers (HST) Marine ordered from Damen in 2022
Those vessels will be updated with the latest design adjustments such as an improved wheelhouse window arrangement and bridge console lay-out
The twin axe hull form ensures excellent stability and fuel economy as well as providing extensive deck space and accommodations
The larger FCS 3210s are a new design that will use the same twin axe hull form and share many of the same attributes as the FCS 2710s
a hybrid battery package for zero-emissions operation is integrated into the design
The greater length allows for additional space for crew and passengers
making it more comfortable during operations
Space is also reserved for possible conversion to methanol fuel.
The latest vessel in the 295.2' Damen CSOV Series will be capable of carrying up to 120 persons in comfort for up to 30 days at a time
In addition to the diesel/electric propulsion system and battery array
innovative features include a hull design that is almost symmetrical fore and aft below the waterline
on which will be mounted Damen’s DPX-Drive
This has four identical thruster units — two forward and two aft — for highly precise manoeuvring and station keeping.
Other features include excellent stability due to its design
which is further enhanced by a large anti-roll tank
A motion-compensated gangway and crane will also ensure smooth transfers of personnel and equipment
it has space reserved for additional battery capacity as and when it is required and will also be pre-prepared for both conversion to methanol engines and offshore charging
“These vessels will support a pathway for our clients to decarbonize their operations and to maintain our position as a leader with the lowest carbon offshore wind support fleet,” Tom Nevin
CEO of HST Marine and business head of Purus Wind
“We are also very excited about the potential of what will be our first hybrid vessels with the ability convert to methanol.”
The new vessels are scheduled to be delivered between 2024 and early 2027

Mehadrin Tnuport Export is taking a new course
this Israeli fruit and vegetable giant's Dutch sales office is expanding its activities to other sourcing areas from its new location at Koelcentrum Zederik in Gorinchem
"We're no longer limiting ourselves by country of origin," she says
Christiane Bell joined Mehadrin on January 1
Her fruit and vegetable career spans 30 years at companies including BayWa
Christiane has no issue traveling from Germany to the Netherlands several days a week
it became clear that you can do some work just as well from home
That's something that was considered impossible before
I don't mind traveling a lot; I'm used to that
I love listening to podcasts and am not really tied to my house."
Adjacent to A15Mehadrin's head office is in Israel
with European branches in the United Kingdom
Mehadrin serves the Central European market
The move from Barendrecht to Gorinchem was a good thing
"Barendrecht has always been considered the center of the fruit and vegetable trade
Our new location is right next to the A15 motorway
is a well-known figure in the fresh produce sector."
Mehadrin focuses on three product groups: citrus
"We're the largest citrus exporter in Israel
but we're focusing our growth mainly on avocado
We don't want to be limited by countries of origin," Christiane explains
Mehadrin avocado farm is its first step in growing activities outside Israel
The goal is to expand sourcing internationally
"Our strategy isn't to start cultivation ourselves but to invest in already developed farms
expect to expand our product range considerably
That's also why we've hired a new sourcing manager."
Year-round supplyIs that not counter the trend toward more specialization
"That depends on the starting point," Christiane answers
"That's certainly the case for companies that go from 150 to 50 items
We're coming from only three product groups
Customers want more products in the range."
"It's a missed opportunity if we don't meet that demand
we can take care of all our clients' added value activities in-house
"There's an ever-increasing demand for dates too," adds account manager Safiya Gambarova
She joined Mehadrin in October 2021 after working for the Staay Food Group for ten years
"Dates are increasingly considered a healthy snack
it's a product with enormous growth potential," she says
lower-priced citrus from other origins is available
so sales have declined slightly over the years
We're still an important marker supplier of some varieties
I think it's a shame that we cannot market Jaffa citrus as a club variety
That would've provided even more opportunities for the brand in the international market."
The corona crisis didn't really negatively affect Mehadrin's sales
"Our retail/wholesale ratio is about 60-40%," says Sander
That more than made up for what we normally sell to the hospitality industry
that will affect the prices we have to charge for our products
we work with good customers who understand the challenges the rest of the chain faces."
Safiya says the current situation in Ukraine will result in a temporary surplus in the European market
"We saw that in 2014 after the Russian embargo
I don't think it will adversely affect our fruit sales in the long run."
Mehadrin is also experiencing considerable growth in organic product sales
and organic products are hitching a ride on that
We're very active in the area of sustainability too
we're the first Israeli company to use the internationally recognized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure its products' carbon footprint," Safiya concludes.
Mehadrin will be at Fruit Logistica in Berlin from April 5-7 in Hall 1.2 – D-03

Icy roads are causing hazardous driving conditions in almost all of the Netherlands on Monday morning
The meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country except the Wadden Islands
there are local slippery conditions across the country due to the freezing of wet road sections
The slipperiness is sometimes difficult to see and causes hindrance and danger to road traffic,” the KNMI said
Road users are urged to adjust their speed and maintain a safe following distance
The Twente region is also experiencing foggy conditions
The KNMI issued a poor visibility warning for Overijssel for that reason
The fog should dissipate by around 10:00 a.m
The Rijkswaterstaat also urged road users to drive extra carefully on Monday morning
the department already reported two accidents causing major delays
Two lanes were closed on the A15 between Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Gorinchem
And an accident on the A12 near Zevenaar had cars stuck for over 30 minutes
It is unclear whether the weather played a role in these crashes
The ANWB expected an average morning rush hour
the travelers’ organization reported 116 traffic jams covering 647 kilometers of Dutch roads
Train commuters heading toward Belgium should take note of a public transport strike in the country on Monday
The regional trains to and from Antwerp via Roosendaal aren’t running today
The strike is also impacting some destinations for the EuroCity Direct and EuroCity trains
The Netherlands is in for a partly sunny day
with a solid chance of sunshine in the morning and afternoon
Maximums will range between freezing in the southeast and 5 degrees Celsius in the northwest
The wind will be weak but could reach moderate strength on the coast
Press Release – On the 14 August, the naming ceremony was held at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem for the Peter Wessels
The new Damen ASD Tug 2810 handed over to Neue Schleppdampfschiffsreederei Louis Meyer GmbH & Co
KG (Louis Meyer) which is based in Hamburg
Even by Damen standards this was exceptionally fast
The contract for the new vessel was signed exactly four months earlier
This was made possible by Damen’s long-standing and highly regarded policy of both offering a wide range of standard designs that can then be customised to meet the exact needs of each customer
and of building for stock to guarantee fast deliveries
This particular vessel had been built for stock at Damen Song Cam Shipyard and then transported to Europe to meet just such a need as this
The 28-metre ASD Tug 2810 is one of Damen’s most popular vessels
and are built to a rugged design well known for its reliability and durability
They can be found working in ports and harbours around the world
The Peter Wessels features a number of options
most notably an aft winch which equips it for coastal towage of barges
It also has been fitted with a sewage treatment plant
established in 1907 and now under the management of the fifth generation of the founding family
will be chartering the ASD Tug 2810 to Emder Schlepp-Betrieb GmbH (ESB)
which operates from the busy Port of Emden
The arrival of the Peter Wessel will take its fleet up to five vessels and will be its first by Damen .
For Louis Meyer this is their second Damen tug
having taken delivery of a Damen ASD Tug 2411
This was an even faster delivery with the contract being signed almost exactly a year prior to that for the Peter Wessels
Damen sales manager Joschka Böddeling commented
“We are very pleased to have been working with Louis Meyer again
The fact that they have added two Damen vessels ships to their fleet in such a short space of time is very gratifying
We look forward to working with them again in the future
The Peter Wessels has very much been a ship of the Coronvirus era
with the contract signed remotely and the naming ceremony taking place under strict safety conditions
But it is proof that life did go on despite everything and our thanks go out to all involved.”
“For us it was nice to work with another family business on the Peter Wessels”
“So it was a simple decision to return to Damen where they take our ideas into account and deliver high quality
We are confident that the Peter Wessels will be a great asset to ESB and their operations in Emden.”
The Peter Wessels has now been handed over to her Owners and commenced work in Emden

Discrimination is still widespread in the Dutch housing market, particularly affecting people with non-Western backgrounds and single people, EenVandaag found in a survey of over 18,000 people in its opinion panel. The vast majority of victims (70 percent) don’t report it.
Almost half of participants with a non-Western background and a quarter of single people reported experiencing discrimination while house hunting in the past decade, a stark contrast with the 12 percent average of all participants. Ethnically diverse and single people had to make many more requests before being invited for a viewing, faced prejudices from estate agents and landlords during viewings, or were ignored altogether.
People with a non-Western background and often a non-Dutch-sounding surname are more often not invited to a viewing. A quarter of home seekers with a non-Western background had to make 15 or more requests before getting an invite to view a house they were interested in. For the average home seeker, that percentage is much lower at 15 percent.
“When I sent an email for a viewing, I was consistently not invited,” a Dutch-Moroccan woman wrote. “Once, I emailed on behalf of my Dutch partner: we could come over. Since then, I have added his name to my surname, although I never officially took his surname after we got married.”
At viewings, ethnically diverse people regularly encounter prejudiced questions or comments from estate agents. “We were repeatedly asked whether we could afford the home. Or we were not given forms to make an offer. When we asked, we were told that the home had already been sold,” a Dutch-Turk respondent said.
“A private landlord did not want to grant us the home. He simply admitted he does not want to rent to people who look Muslim,” a Dutch-Moroccan respondent said.
Single people also face discrimination more often than average. A quarter of singles surveyed reported discrimination, compared to almost no respondents with a partner or a child. Many reported that estate agents consider them a greater financial risk than couples.
“Estate agents reject me by explaining that they are ‘giving the house to a couple in the tight housing market.’ That is nonsense. They just want the financial security of two salaries.”
Only about a quarter of people who experienced discrimination in the housing market did something about it. They mainly discussed it with family or friends and, to a lesser extent, reported it to the estate agent or municipality. Some shared their experience on social media. 7 out of 10 decided against reporting it, often because they didn’t know where to go or didn’t think it would result in anything.
The Netherlands only barely escaped a disaster comparable to the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Italy last summer, professor of safety and disaster management Ben Ale and professor of structural engineering Rob Nijsse of TU Delft said to EenVandaag after studying an investigation report about the course of events around the closing of the Merwede bridge near Gorinchem in 2016.
The investigation was done by consultancy firm Berenschot. The bridge on the A27 near Gorinchem was suddenly closed to heavy freight traffic in October 2016 due to hairline cracks in the steel beams. A few days later the bridge was closed to all traffic weighing more than 3.5 tons. At that point the bridge only had a "life expectancy" of six days, the professors said to EenVandaag. The bridge was reopened to all traffic two months later.
Ben Ale calls it "a miracle" that the bridge still stands. The professor told EenVandaag that the report makes clear that the bridge was about to collapse and raises questions about the quality of the supervision on bridges in the Netherlands. "Sometimes a fatal accident may be necessary to get the message back in the limelight", he said.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines celebrates its 96th anniversary today. And, true to tradition, KLM introduced its latest Delftware miniature. This year, the choice for KLM’s 96th house went to the Hamel House in Gorinchem.
The 96th house was festively unveiled in Gorinchem today. The first new 96th house added to KLM’s collection was presented by KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers to Mr Piet IJssels, Chairman of the Hamel Foundation and the South Korean Ambassador Mr Jong-hyun Choe.
KLM has been flying to South Korea since 1984 and currently operates daily service between Amsterdam and Seoul.
Hendrick Hamel (Gorinchem, 1630 - 1692) was a Dutch seafarer. In 1653 his ship, the ‘Sperwer’, became wrecked off the coast of the Korean island of Jeju. The survivors were not allowed to leave the country because the Korean king was afraid that information about Korea would get out to the rest of the world. Only after thirteen years, did Hendrick Hamel succeed in escaping, along with seven others.
Hamel kept a detailed journal of his time in Korea, which served as the only source of information about Korea at that time in Europe. Because of his stories the country became known in Europe; Koreans are still proud of this today. Hamel became well known in Korea and this earned him great respect.
KLM has presented its Delftware miniatures on board since the 1950s. The houses are replicas of exceptional buildings in the Netherlands. The number of houses in the collection has corresponded with KLM’s age since 1994. A new house has been added to the collection on 7 October each year thereafter. The houses are presented to passengers travelling in World Business Class on intercontinental flights.
Dutch shipbuilding group says the decision will have a ‘firm impact’ on its finances
Damen Shipyards will not deliver new vessels to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
The Dutch shipbuilding group told the NL Times that it will also not accept new contracts involving Russian interests.
The decision will have a “firm impact” on its finances, a spokesperson said.
The group is not revealing the number of ships involved, but described it as a “significant amount”.
Damen said it is in close contact with relevant authorities about the situation in Russia.
UK shipbroker Clarksons lists 41 tugs, platform supply vessels, crew boats and ferries being built at Damen Gorinchem in the Netherlands.
Many of the clients are not known, but five tugs are due for delivery to Russian state atomic agency Rosatom in October this year.
Dutch media said a number of workboats and trawlers are also under contract from Russian companies.
“It is a significant part of our turnover that we derive from that region. So it was not a light decision,” a spokesperson was cited as saying.
Damen is also working to take care of staff at a Ukrainian design base in Mykolaev, a city which is under siege.
“We have a team that is in constant contact with our employees there. We are looking at how we can help them,” the spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with them.”
The group also has a Russian engineering office in St Petersburg that opened in 2019.
This is described as employing 33 trained and experienced shipbuilders from top Russian universities.
“The company combines the deep knowledge of Russian engineering together with Dutch know-how,” the company’s website says.
Damen has been contacted for further comment.
Over recent years, the group has built 36 ships in Russia, including dredgers.

Dutch North Sea activity this year has shifted away from exploration to incre-mental field development
All three of the major operators have expansion schemes underway at key offshore gas production centers
Among the beneficiaries is Gorinchem-based engineering/fabrication group Mercon Steel Structures
After a quiet period in offshore terms - one small new platform per year - the company is suddenly working to tight deadlines on four different projects
The largest in volume terms is the new K5PK compression platform that TotalFinaElf is adding to the K4/K5 complex
Mercon supplied three of the existing seven installations during the 1990s
The new assignment comprises a 450-ton jacket and 2,200-ton topsides
plus connecting bridges to the K5P and K5A platforms
Mercon has been commissioned to build three compression modules designed by the Wood Group/Stork venture
These are for the K14 Field (1,400 t dry weight)
"We see a growing need for compression as more Dutch sector gasfields start depleting," says Mercon's Tender Manager Maarten Rozemeijer
There are also options in the NAM contract to supply modules for further platforms
Mercon has 10 years' experience working with TotalFinaElf (formerly Elf Petroland) in the Dutch sector
a TotalFinaElf (TFE) operated satellite that will be controlled from the Markham complex near the UK median line
it built the compression module for Elf Petroland's F15 project
The EPIC contract for the F15 compression module also included offshore installation
TFE has been subcontracting detailed design responsibilities to Mercon
This is good for the fabricator's self-esteem
Earlier platforms Mercon worked on for TFE were built to "frozen" designs
with a delivery schedule of around 16 months
"so we are starting more-or-less from scratch." This approach also increases the engineering contractor's exposure to risk
And the deadline for delivery on this project is just 13 months
K5PK will support three compression trains comprising 7.6 MW and 8.0 MW Alstom diesel turbines driving Demag Delaval compressors
Prosernat is supplying the glycol regeneration system
will be installed in the compressor's exhaust cooler banks to generate heat for the glycol generation system
Mercon will undertake run tests on site in Gorinchem using natural gas
"We also did this - successfully - for the F15 compression module
That was good preparation for this project
which comprises much bigger compression facilities
hookup and commissioning offshore was reduced from the normal three to four weeks to seven days."
K5PK's piled jacket will be a support structure only
Assembly is expected to be completed simultaneously with the topsides
Once the platform is installed (the installation contractor has not yet been decided)
Mercon will also be responsible for connection of the bridges to the K5P and K5A platform and hookup of the K5PK platform
These bridges are respectively 20 meters and 40 meters long
Wood/Stork are responsible for the entire design
so Mercon is in this case working totally to order
All three are being built simultaneously at Gorinchem - first steel was cut in May
and the completed modules are due to be loaded out fully commissioned next March
Heerema's Thialf crane barge will perform the installations
Mercon also built much larger packages such as the 6,000-ton drilling module for Oseberg
Only Norwegian contractors can count on this size workload these days from the North Sea
Mercon is therefore looking for work further afield
for instance through the main contractors with a presence in West Africa and the Caspian
The K1A Field was discovered by Elf in 1997
Analysts Wood Mackenzie estimate recoverable reserves at 352 bcf
Elf envisaged a stand-alone platform with full processing facilities linked to a wellhead platform on the field's southern section
it opted instead for a satellite development to the Markham complex
pipeline to the J6A platform for processing
with onward export through the WGT trunkline
K1A's topsides include three-stage separation facilities and accommodate nine well slots
with load-out completed only 11 months after the EPC contract was awarded
TFE issued an EPIC contract for the jacket to allow Seaway Heavy Lifting (SHL) to perform installation with its crane barge Stanislav Yudin
Schiedam-based fabricator HBG Steel Structures and designer IV Oil & Gas teamed up to find the most economic solution
and the barge's crane hook capacities led to design of a four-leg
1,000-ton jacket with 70-meter-long grouted skirt piles
four support piles were driven to create stability on the soft soil during piling of the main piles
and also to reduce the jacket's weight (no large mud mats)
the buoyancy of the jacket was made adapted to allow the jacket to turn in water with the vessel's main and auxiliary hooks

Rotterdam police have fired a female employee from Gorinchem on suspicion of plotting to murder her 57-year-old ex-partner
There have already been several preliminary hearings in this case
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) feels that the motive is a “custody battle.” It was reported in De Telegraaf in August that the reason for the plans was because the man had abused her underage son on several occasions
allegedly also involved other people in her plans
The intention was for a 19-year-old acquaintance of the woman to fatally shoot the husband
denies the accusations and claims that she is being framed by other suspects
The substantive hearing of the criminal case is scheduled for mid-September this year
is allowed to await the case in freedom under strict conditions
South Holland city voted the Netherlands' most beautiful fortified townBookmarkBookmarkBy Victoria SévenoAug 21, 2021After months of nominations and voting, the city of Gorinchem in South Holland has been named the most beautiful fortified town in the Netherlands
After discovering the most beautiful town in the Netherlands last year
the Royal Dutch Touring Club’s (ANWB) launched a campaign to discover the Netherlands’ most beautiful fortified town
asking all its members to vote for one of 40 nominated cities or to nominate their own
Ultimately, the city of Gorinchem - also known as Gorkum - situated between Rotterdam and Den Bosch was voted as the most beautiful fortified town
The ANWB jury celebrated the top-notch preservation of the city’s historical sites
hailing it as a historic city with a modern vibe and congratulating the authenticity and liveliness of the city and its people
“Gorinchem is beautifully situated on the spot where the river Linge flows into the Merwede,” the jury says
“The ramparts have been beautifully preserved: a green ribbon around the city with knots of chestnuts and plane trees to stroll under and with a view of the surrounding countryside
The city is thought to have been founded circa the year 1000
and it was established as a fortified town in the 13th and 14th centuries
It is home to the largest fort that remains fully intact
allowing residents and tourists alike to enjoy gorgeous views as they walk the entire perimeter of the town
Gorinchem isn’t the only beautiful fortified town in the Netherlands
and Sittard (Limburg) were all recognised by the ANWB jury
The Netherlands’ fortified towns make great day trips for anyone looking to explore the country more, giving locals, expats and tourists the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Netherlands and enjoy classic examples of Dutch architecture
The ANWB has published a book highlighting the top 50 fortified towns in the Netherlands

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will prosecute the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyard as well as the current and two former chairmen of the board for bribery, money laundering, and violating sanctions against Russia, among other things, sources told the Volkskrant
The directors charged are the current chairman of the board
who chaired the board between 2006 and 2019
The decision to prosecute follows seven years of investigation and a failed attempt to settle the case outside of court with a fine. The settlement negotiations fell apart last year when the Volkskrant revealed new suspicions of bribery against the Dutch shipbuilder and Nieuwsuur discovered that Damen was evading sanctions imposed against Russia
The OM suspects Damen of continuing to supply goods and technology to Russia over the past three years
despite the EU sanctions imposed on the country after it invaded Ukraine
The OM believes Damen helped strengthen the Russian military with its products
The OM also suspects Damen and the three board members of paying too much money to agents abroad responsible for obtaining orders
Damen awarded these agents 15 percent of the total price of the order
which is a massive amount considering the price of a ship
there is a great risk that the agents will use some of the money to bribe officials
When Damen was limited to 5 percent success fees
the company and directors allegedly concealed additional money in the administration
The consequences of the prosecution could be far-reaching
companies are not allowed to compete for government orders for four years
according to European tendering regulations
Damen is the most important shipbuilder for the Dutch Navy
Defense has ordered dozens of ships from Damen in recent years to replace the current fleet
describing the choice of a Dutch shipbuilder as “in line with the government policy to strengthen the Dutch maritime manufacturing industry” and “Europe’s strategic autonomy.”
Defense State Secretary Gijs Tuinman (BBB) said last month that “an ongoing criminal investigation and suspicions of fraud and bribery are not compelling grounds for excluding a company from a tender.” He did not mention the accusations of sanction violations

Authorities raid Dutch shipyard group’s offices in Gorinchem.
Dutch investigators have carried out a raid on Dutch shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards in an overseas bribery case.
Personnel from the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service seized documents from the head office in Gorinchem last week, agency spokeswoman Valentine Hoen told Reuters.
Damen spokesman Arold de Vries confirmed the police search, but did not give further details.
Last March, the World Bank barred Damen Shipyards Gorinchem from participating in its tenders for 18 months over fraud.
Couples who want to get married at city hall have to pay more than last year in most municipalities
An extensive ceremony costs an average of 477 euros on the popular Friday
The price varies enormously per municipality
according to the trade site ThePerfectWedding.nl
which collected the rates from all municipalities
319 of the 342 municipalities increased there wedding fees
lovebirds in this Noord-Brabant municipality pay 915 euros for a ceremony on Friday
That is double the 2023 amount when the costs were still 465 euros
The municipality said it implemented the increase to bring the fees in line with those of neighboring municipalities
It also brought the Friday afternoon fees in line with the fees for Saturday and Sunday
Fiances in Zeist also have to pay significantly more than last year
The Utrecht municipality increased the rate by 245 euros to 924 euros
Other municipalities that significantly increased their fees include Gorinchem
Beek was previously the cheapest municipality to get married in on a Friday
Leeuwarden is the most expensive municipality to get married in on a Friday
Voerendaal in Zuid-Limburg is the cheapest at 200 euros
“The differences per municipality are extreme,” said Sarah Glasbergen of ThePerfectWedding.nl
“We have been doing this research for years and it would be good if something was finally done about it
the differences were already large and parliamentary questions were even asked about it
Many municipalities charge different rates for Monday to Friday and for the weekend
Some municipalities also have a special rate for Fridays
