Does she listen when she is practicing and on the slopes what is she listening to?!I definitely listen to music on the hill as it keeps me motivated Remixes by Girl Talk and Basement Jaxx are some of my faves during competition I’ve been playing  ‘The game needs me’ by Dyme Def on repeat because it has an amazing beat How do you get yourself psyched up for a competition you are wicked ambitious taking on college and a skiing career How do you balance school work and skiing while excelling at both Going to Quest University in Squamish works perfectly for my schedule I am able to take December through March as well as July and August off school to ski I stay super organized to maintain that 4.0 but also get my body as strong as possible   I’m not going to lie:  It is still a trade off the best training in New Zealand is in early September and I’m back at school What’s your worst injury or accident?Any accident that takes me away from skiing for a while makes me unhappy Some injuries have just been bad timing—taking me away from a competition or training The injury that took me away from skiing for the longest period of time was a type II MCL tear it was misdiagnosed as a broken leg requiring surgery so I felt happy when my doctor in Canada diagnosed it as “just an MCL tear.” Do you have a nickname? The name that everyone in skiing knows me as Most of the people closest to me call me by my full name The boys I travel with make up new nicknames for me everyday such as Woz Rebag (after the snow boarder Ross Rebagliati) Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now finishing my PhD with an Olympic medal hanging on my wall I’ll probably be competing in some kind of sport and I’ll still be skiing a lot Hollywood horror movies are usually better than Hollywood comedy movies but a witty alternative comedy takes the cake any day Female skiers sometimes get a lack of respect like being left out of Dew Tour except in Utah (and then only halfpipe) who have pushed for female inclusion in so many events Females of my age and younger can just take it for granted that we are included in X Games so I appreciate their efforts which benefit all of us we’re seeing female skiing progress because we push ourselves and each other in competition shows females where the bar is set so they can work to beat that all event organizers and sponsors will see what went down in female slope and pipe and realize that including us makes their events better And they can feel good about themselves knowing that they are contributing to the progression of female skiing internationally What kind of advice would you give to up and coming female skiers looking to do what you do You’ll ski better and longer as well as have more fun and confidence You don’t have to act and dress like one of the boys to shred next to them You don’t have to be like the other girls either It will help to keep you skiing and take away some of the fear of pushing yourself What kind of training would you suggest is the best for skiers? yoga (or some kind of good stretching regime) and weight lifting are the absolute best off-season training They make you strong enough to take any impact fit enough to shred all day as well as balance your muscles to avoid injuries I like to do body weight workouts during the season to keep my muscles strong but not wear me out for the next day on the hill If you could ski anywhere in the world where would it be I want to go to Japan and ski those big pillows of powder (as I’ve only skied in park and pipe competitions there) And I’d love to travel to some of those unusual ski places like Lebanon and India is the current Fulbright Scholar in Residence at the CCNY-based CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Groenewoud’s Fulbright residency comes as CCNY was designated this fall as a 2022 Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader. 2025 Marijke Groenewoud celebrates her win with the Frisian flag Photo: Sem van der Waal ANPThe Dutch squad has finished this year’s World Distance Speed Skating Championships with a clear lead in the medals table The Dutch women in particular dominated their events at Hamar in Norway and picking up three silver and three bronze as well Joy Beune won her third gold medal of the championships in the 1,500 metres Teammate Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong took silver “This was my dream and it became a reality,” Beune told broadcaster NOS after the race Marijke Groenewoud also took her third world title in the mass start having won five out of six mass start races in this World Cup season as well Marijke Groenewoud sweeps the season, winning 5 out of 6 Mass Start races during World Cup season and taking the gold medal at ISU World Speed Skating Single Distances Championship! 😤 👊 #WorldSpeed #SpeedSkating pic.twitter.com/BWWEZgPL1H — ISU Speed Skating (@ISU_Speed) March 16, 2025 The men’s team won two gold medals through Jenning de Boo’s surprise victory in the 500 metres and Joep Wennemars’ 1,000 metres victory on Saturday replicating his father Erben’s win 21 years ago “I carry that name since I was a kid,” Wennemars told the International Skating Union website after the race He knows exactly what this means to me and vice versa.” Like father, like son! 20 years after Erben Wennemars won the 1000m world title, Joep Wennemars claims the gold medal at the World Championships! 🏆🇳🇱 #WorldSpeed #SpeedSkating pic.twitter.com/WjxqraMPGa — ISU Speed Skating (@ISU_Speed) March 15, 2025 There was disappointment for the men’s team in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres with Beau Snellink’s silver in the 5,000 the only Dutch medal in the two events which the Dutch have dominated in the past The men also picked up silver in the team sprint and bronze in the team pursuit We could not provide the Dutch News service without the generous support of our readers Your donations allow us to report on issues you tell us matter and provide you with a summary of the most important Dutch news each day Many thanks to everyone who has donated to DutchNews.nl in recent days We could not provide this service without you Please help us making DutchNews.nl a better read by taking part in a short survey Friday, October 24, 2008 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM EDT Dykstra Funeral Homes Northwood Chapel 295 Douglas Avenue Holland, MI 49424 (616) 392-2348 Driving Directions Friday, October 24, 2008 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM EDT Dykstra Funeral Homes Northwood Chapel 295 Douglas Avenue Holland, MI 49424 (616) 392-2348 Driving Directions 2008 11:00 AM EDT Harlem Reformed Church 6854 144th Ave of West Olive passed away Wednesday October 22 1920 the eldest child of Peter and Emma Groenewoud Gerrald served in the United States Army and was a decorated WWII veteran He retired after 38 years from Eagle Ottawa Leather Company Gerrald was preceded in death by a brother Richard Groenewoud His family includes: wife of 67 years Marian “Mem” Groenewoud; son Terry and Sandie Groenewoud of Holland daughter Sandy and Larry De Haan of Zeeland nine great grandchildren; brothers John and Betty Groenewoud of Holland and Jay and Linda Groenewoud of Milwaukee; in-laws Pauline Groenewoud Services will be 11 am Saturday October 25 2008 at The Harlem Reformed Church 6854 144th Ave Holland Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens Visiting will be 2-4 and 7-9 Friday October 24 2008 at The Northwood Chapel Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home 295 Douglas Ave Memorials may be made to Harlem Reformed Church or Hospice of Holland Please visit www.lifestorynet.com to sign Jerry's online registry JavaScript is disabled. "My first event of the year is the Dew Tour in Breckenridge in the middle of December, and I'm excited to start competing again. I'm spending a lot of time preparing off snow, and going to the gym as well as riding a bike. I will get onto snow at the end of this month, and then my training regimen will switch and become more focused on the technical aspects of skiing, and less on just building strength." How old were you when you started skiing, and when did you begin to view it as more than a hobby? "I started skiing when I was three years old. My dad's an avid skier, and he wanted to have a ski family. But I lived in Quito, Ecuador in South America during my childhood, so I kind of had to relearn how to ski when I moved back to Canada when I was thirteen." What do you wear when you're competing? What do you consider your biggest accomplishment to date? "I won the X Games in Aspen this past year. It's the biggest event of my sport. Freeskiing just got into the Olympics, so I could compete in 2014, but until that event, the X Games is definitely then premier event for freeskiing. That event was really special to me because my teammate Sarah Burke had passed away a week before, so it was an extremely difficult event because I was grieving. I don't think I'll ever be as proud of my skiing as I was at that event." Did Sarah's death make you take a step back and think about the physical risks of your sport? "I had to take a step back right after it happened, but quickly, I resolved that the best way to honor her memory and all that she had done for the sport was to push myself and approach skiing with an even more aggressive attitude." **How do you feel about freeskiing's inclusion in the Olympics? ** You're also taking college classes at Quest University and majoring in math and physics. How do you balance school with your intense training regimen? Do you plan to use your math degree to one day pursue a different career? "I think so. That's currently my plan. I'm not going to end up graduating with my Bachelor's degree for a few more years. I've taken a variety of courses in the sciences. Right now, I'm taking an epidemiology course, and I'm exploring biology and public health." MN – Canadian freeskier Rosalind Groenewoud affectionately recognized by many as Roz G has signed a promotional agreement with Target stores joining eight other elite action sports athletes representing the company In 2012, Groenewoud was named the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) Women’s Halfpipe World Champion after taking home gold medals at both Winter X Games and X Games Europe. Her score at Winter X Games in Aspen was a 93.66 the highest Women’s Ski Superpipe score in history Groenewoud also received the AFP Women’s Overall World Champion award in 2010 and 2009 philanthropic goals and her positive influence on women’s sports.” The British Columbia native joins the brand as Target prepares to open stores in Canada for the first time this March The company’s athlete program also sponsors snowboarder Shaun White and freeskiers Simon Dumont and Torin Yater-Wallace You must be logged in to post a comment. It was then that an entirely unfamiliar hurdle appeared “A week after that race in Belgium I started to feel off-balance and dizzy Groenewoud went through the entire alphabet soup of medical care: EEG “I had no depth perception,” she says of the vertigo Your spatial awareness becomes obscured … I saw every kind of doctor you can imagine Chronic suggestive migraine was a possibility but the most likely culprit was something in the chronic fatigue/burnout/depression realm It’s just a way of saying your body is fed up.” Until the fateful arrival of this mysterious “I think I started wanting other things in my life I convinced myself I had to stay the path and just keep plugging away I didn’t care if I ever got back to competing with the considerable help of family and friends Groenewoud felt well enough to begin the comeback “My decision to start training again was less that I wanted to go to the Olympics and more that I didn’t want to be afraid to push myself you come to understand there is a lot more to life That understanding takes away a little of the desperation … But that desperation comes from an insecure place but it’s been tricky pushing myself from a new place — pushing from the heart wmoriarty@postmedia.com transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. I enrolled in a 4-year Game Art course at the Media College in Amsterdam. During this period I got an internship at Guerrilla as an Asset Artist on Killzone Shadow Fall. After my graduation, I did a year of freelancing on a few unreleased projects but also a major released project like The Witcher 3 and shipped textures for GameTextures I then got hired at Splash Damage where I’ve had the chance to work on Dirty Bomb and the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition After almost a year I decided to go back to the Netherlands and teamed up with Guerrilla where I'm about to mark my eighth year this summer 80.lv: How would you describe the years of working on Horizon Zero Dawn Stefan Groenewoud: When I joined Guerrilla back in 2014 Horizon Zero Dawn hadn't been announced yet I saw a lot of potential but I couldn’t have predicted the impact the game would have on the industry and the fanbase it has created ever since My title back then was Texture and Shader Artist but we also helped out wherever necessary (not just shaders) This included improving textures on old assets and creating new assets which got requested towards the end of production I started writing scripts and automated processes then my title got rebranded to Technical Artist as it made the most sense with the variety of tasks we handled 80.lv: How did the development of Horizon Forbidden West begin for you we already had an idea where we wanted to improve certain shaders and workflows We did have to reinvent areas of development; where we normally used Photoshop Instead of sculpting rocks completely by hand But we also wanted to stay true to the style players were used to from the first game So it was a balancing act and took several iterations to get it right – to have a familiar yet improved feel for players 80.lv: Could you explain the job of a Technical Artist to beginners reading this article Stefan Groenewoud: I have had the advantage that I could use my background as an Environment Artist I was familiar with the approaches and workflows the artists were using and knew how to create efficient and stunning art you try to bridge that gap between the technical side and the artistic side of game development this position is defined a bit differently but in my case help optimize content so the game runs smoothly or make the artist’s life easier by writing scripts for example; to automate redundant tasks or tasks that would otherwise take a lot of hours to process 80.lv: You used Substance 3D and ZBrush a lot when working on the first part Stefan Groenewoud: During Horizon Zero Dawn we didn’t use Substance 3D that much; however for the certain assets in The Frozen Wilds We had to familiarize ourselves with the new tools as we went from sculpting details to generating them procedurally The great benefit of using this system was that we were able to easily tweak and update textures/materials by exporting all our substances at once with a few scripts Sharing nodes and being able to control the look of materials from one spot is a huge benefit nowadays 80.lv: What were the main challenges when developing Horizon Forbidden West Stefan Groenewoud: I think that for any cross-gen platform game it’s hard to find the right balance between quality There is a major leap in hardware advantage so ensuring the content work on old vs new hardware will need more care What helped us is that we focussed on creating new tools and scripts that work tightly with our Decima engine 80.lv: Games are becoming larger and more beautiful with every PS5 title Stefan Groenewoud: I feel that larger and more beautiful games will require more people and longer development times to maintain or improve the quality standard Games have become rapidly complex as they have to look better each year and feel more immersive we will figure out tools and new software will be developed Where we will see more procedural approaches and Machine Learning based tools so we avoid doing this manually and run into production cycles of 8+ years for example we already see this but photo scanning is going to be a lifesaver for photorealistic games as it gives artists a head start and the ability to directly place assets in the environment you get the high-quality LODs with it for seamless content optimization and integration In terms of recent games that impressed me which already somewhat adapted this workflow is Forza Horizon 5 Playground Games shared a glimpse of their processes with Digital Foundry 80.lv: As a member of the PlayStation family could you share some advice for artists willing to get into this legendary team Stefan Groenewoud: I think the most important thing is to try to find a niche Keep practicing and stay motivated or eager to learn more Getting into games seems hard (which it is at the very beginning) but there are a lot of resources available to help you figure out where to start 80 level 80LV logo are registered trademarks of 80LV LLC We use cookies on this website to make your browsing experience better. exciting,” said Furlan “It’s weird because you see and hear about people getting upgraded at some point in our careers we weren’t competing on an even playing field.” but the result also represents Canadian athletics history Groenewoud and Furlan are now the first Canadian teammates to share the top two steps of the podium at a FISU athletics event Every athlete who steps up to a starting line competitive track to recreational road running With time comes perspective about the nature of competition and what drives her “I am now very aware that why I do this sport is because I love it I am so passionate about running,” Groenewoud said “For any younger generations coming behind Jess and I I think you have to constantly check in with yourself I don’t do it for the gold medal opportunities It’s just because it brings me so much joy It’s brought me some of my best friends that I have My why was how much joy and satisfaction this sport has brought me.” While these two Canadian athletes missed out on their moment atop the podium in 2013 they have finally received their recognition as champions Ruth Groenewoud of the Miss IQ foundation and Mr Jan Willem Geurts of the Sports for From the 19th century, Dutch colonisers on Curaçao relied heavily on the Catholic church. Missionaries provided not only teaching and spiritual care for the Catholic Afro-Caribbeans, they also ensured social order and peace. However, these benefits came at a price. The gap to good education and participation in socio-politics continued to be unbridgeable for many Curaçaoans, according to historian Margo Groenewoud. PhD defence 15 June. Groenewoud studied how in the 20th century, after the opening of the oil refinery in 1915, the interests of the colonial government and business life on the small island increasingly determined the role of the Catholic church in society.  She also studied the influence this had on social development locally between 1915 and 1973.  Groenewoud's research shows that government and businesses ploughed a lot of money into the Catholic missions. At the same time, the refinery preferred bringing workers from the Netherlands or from neighbouring countries such as Suriname. It was not until the Second World War that local workers were employed, and the opportunities for their education were expanded. In the mid-1950s the island entered a long period of crisis which prolonged the socio-economic deprivation.  The attitude of the church throughout the period studied by Groenewoud was not focused structurally on social development, even when this started to have an effect elsewhere in the region. As a result, in large areas of society there was no real civil society. When, in the 1930s, a number of Catholic associations were formed for a relatively small urban middle class, this was fully under the auspices of the Church. ‘It's clear from publications, interviews and archive material,' Groenwoud explains, 'that until well into the 1950s church leaders believed that the Catholic Curaçaoans were not capable of social and political participation. They were not regarded as democratic citizens, and they needed someone to take care of them and think for them. The missionaries actually compared them to children who needed the absolute authority of a father.' When the Catholic members of the population were given the right to vote in 1948, the Catholic church was taken completely by surprise: contrary to all expectations, the local people voted for nationalist representation. Even though the church subsequently lost ground, the influential position of the clergy was largely maintained until the end of the 1960s.   Groenewoud was speaking in parliament after the security company was subpoenaed to appear before the justice and correctional services portfolio committee to account on Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester's escape from the Mangaung prison on May 3 2022. Following Bester's escape, Groenewoud said three investigations were launched: one by the prison, one by the SA Police Service and another by the Department of Justice and correctional services. He said the prison's investigation, which was initiated by G4S, was merely a compliance investigation. “We had to analyse the actions of staff leading up to events of May 3 and the days that followed. We had to test our actions against the Correctional Services Act. “We had to check conduct against stringent procedures we have. We conducted interviews with staff members and looked at the registers, documents and looked at the CCTV footage ... all of which was shared with SAPS,” Groenewoud said. Groenewoud said there were three notable findings following their investigation, which was that video cameras for the administrative building and broadway functions on the same circuit were not recording footage during the period 7.38pm on May 2 to 4.11am on May 3. On May 4, Groenewald said the external security system service provider reported that the system recorded a power interruption to the circuit’s recording device at the time under review. “There were no other power interruptions at MCC (Mangaung Correctional Centre) recorded during this time. Two central control room officials failed to follow clearly established MCC policies and procedures and did not monitor and report events in a timely manner. “The on-site night duty supervisor on 2/3 May failed to follow clear and well-established MCC policies and procedures failing to complete inspection rounds. Failing to attend to incidents on time. Distant CCTV footage shows two unidentified figures running towards administrative building where CCTV cameras were temporarily not recording,” he said. Groenewoud said G4S had at all times co-operated with all investigations, adding that it was their employees who informed SAPS of their suspicions of a “strange smell” on the personal items belonging to Bester. “On May 4 staff noticed a petrol smell. We immediately advised SAPS of this issue. On May 5 SAPS concurred traces of petrol and confirmed the presence of an accelerant,” Groenewald said. ANC MP Anthea Ramolobeng accused G4S and prison management of removing themselves from accountability. “The report we're getting is hogwash and G4S is exonerating themselves. There are a number of security lapses that led to the escape. There seems to be no management oversight. “Since the escape, what has management done and what’s been the oversight. He keeps saying we provided authorities with information. There’s no accountability. They’re not saying this is what we’ve done,” she said. Ramolobeng also questioned why Bester had been moved to cell 35, which is deemed a “blind spot” from CCTV cameras. “Cell 35 is normally not used because it’s in the blind spot. Who authorised him to be moved to the blind spot and why was the person in the cell removed? There was an orchestration plan for him to escape,” she said. Groenewoud responded by saying the inmate who previously occupied Cell 35 had applied to move to a normal cell. “That inmate was not moved to accommodate inmate Bester. It happened to become available on the day,” he said. Register (it's quick and free) or sign in now Please read our Comment Policy before commenting.
