the only obvious indication that Erik ten Hag once lived here is a sign fixed to the front window of a shop space that is up for sale That is because his family are business people whose real-estate offices are among the biggest in the nearest city a small town on the other side of Enschede Erik and his brothers grew up here in Haaksbergen in stark contrast to the noise currently engulfing its most famous son Last night, Ten Hag guided Manchester United to their latest embarrassing result of an increasingly painful season — a 4-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace The odds of Thomas Tuchel heading to Old Trafford to replace Ten Hag when he leaves his job as Bayern Munich coach this summer have been slashed and there have been reports in Germany of Ten Hag taking over from Tuchel in Bavaria Not that you would guess at any of this in Haaksbergen a folksy place where everyone seems to know everyone else Enter the fruit-and-vegetables store and the man behind the counter knows customers by name trying to find out how people feel about Ten Hag’s position at United It is explained on the steps of one of Haaksbergen’s several Protestant churches that it is culturally unacceptable in this conservative part of the Netherlands to discuss someone else’s problems publicly A few of Ten Hag’s old friends in Haaksbergen were contacted by The Athletic as well with one of them suggesting that speaking at this moment would not help him It is possible to find the odd person on the narrow lanes that feed off Haaksbergen’s central square willing to speak although nobody wants to be named fully or photographed English is also not spoken here as commonly as in other parts of the country But almost everyone prepared to offer their views is a staunch defender of Ten Hag — and a critic of the club who currently employ him who works for a maintenance service commissioned to tidy up the trees and bushes in the centre of Haaksbergen Kevin names some of the other managers who have not lived up to the expectations at United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement after the 2012-13 season — the last one where they won the Premier League title and this says it might not be the fault of the manager — in this case Kevin says he did not watch the capitulation to Palace after which the Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher described United as one “the most poorly coached teams in the Premier League” Just how far can Erik ten Hag's Manchester United fall Enschede’s club in the domestic top-flight Eredivisie where Ten Hag had three spells as a player — the last “I remember him in the centre of the defence,” Kevin says You will struggle to find anyone who has anything bad to say about him.” “We know all about Erik ten Hag’s problems in Manchester,” says one he has been unable to improve results but he achieved success at Ajax when he worked in front of a stable structure behind him What about the money he has had to spend at United He cannot claim he has not been supported financially It means that Ten Hag buys the players he knows There is a feeling in Haaksbergen that it might be time for Ten Hag to move on where he coached Bayern’s reserves from 2013-15 yet there is an argument that similar issues relating to directorial lead exist at the Allianz Arena A man carrying cakes from a bakery thinks it might be time to step away from football altogether for a while before making any decision about his next job where he started out as a youth player in the system at Bon Boys “Erik ten Hag is always welcome in Haaksbergen,” says the man Facing Manchester United: Opponents tell us what it's like to play against 'the big gap' (Top photos: Getty Images; Simon Hughes/The Athletic) Simon Hughes is a senior writer who joined The Athletic from The Independent in 2019. He has also written There She Goes, a modern social history of Liverpool as a city Follow Simon on Twitter @Simon_Hughes__ A 29-year-old man from Haaksbergen has been sentenced to 240 hours of community service for serious abuse of his newborn daughter. The court in Almelo stated on Friday that they found an unconditional prison sentence appropriate, as is usually the case with child abuse, but decided against it because the man is struggling with psychosocial problems and is allegedly undergoing therapy. Although the court imposed a prison sentence of 80 days, 77 of these were suspended. The 29-year-old had spent the remaining three days in custody. The Public Prosecution Service demanded 180 hours of community service. The court found it proven that the man grabbed his young daughter far too tightly on two occasions in October 2022 and squeezed her chest. The girl was just three months old at the time. She suffered several broken ribs. The injuries came to light when a pediatrician examined the girl for feeding problems. He also discovered internal bleeding and bruising, which could indicate that the man had abused her on several occasions. During the hearing of the case two weeks ago, the man denied the accusations. He allegedly grabbed her firmly once at most when she would not stop crying. He did not reveal much else about what had happened. The judges pointed out to him that if he remained silent, his daughter and her slightly older sister could develop psychological problems later on. The file revealed that the man himself had been mentally and physically abused by his father in his youth. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. ‘De Kleine Generaal’ can be out there doing his manager things and our ecosystems never really cross paths I think I just naively assumed: this man’s a good manager I don’t really know much about Erik ten Hag and then Rangnick who looked a bit like he might be a James Bond villain He’s always wearing lovely jackets and saying something very slightly rogue with a wry smile So I thought there can’t be much else to offer there’s more than meets the eye with the charming Dutchman… lies a small town which borders Germany – Haaksbergen Lil’ Erik was born here – living just outside in a small town called Oldenzaal with his parents Hennie (father) and Joke (mother) alongside his two brothers Michel and Rico Haaksbergen is known for the beautiful Oostendorper Watermölle (a watermill) the Museum Buurtspoorweg (rail museum) and of course Erik’s former FC Twente teammate Andy Scharmin was from Haaksbergen Andy tragically died following a plane crash at just 21 years of age in 1989 Erik still mentions Andy from time to time in interviews as an “unimaginable athlete” – which is certainly true as he was the Netherlands under-21’s captain at the time who played a total number of 350 games in Dutch professional football scoring 84 times during his 14-year playing career Bram Tankink is a former cyclist who competed in the Tour De France and Shirley van der Lof is a racing driver and granddaughter of former Formula One driver Dries van der Lof (the first ever Dutch F1 driver) Erik ten Hag is Haaksbergen’s most famous export you have a strong objection and will yell “THOMAS BERGE” at me smugly whilst singing “De Stem van Mijn Hart” I know that he took part in the Eurovision Dance Contest 2008 in Glasgow…and ended last with ONE point – so take that There are actually MANY more footballers from Oldenzaal but it would’ve been tricky to call Erik the MOST famous from there Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is from there guys © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER ","https://fansided.com/",{"alt":"61","src":"62","url":"63"},{"type":"60","value":"64"},"link","Minute Media","https://www.minutemedia.com/",{"text":"67","url":"68"},{"type":"66","value":"69"},"All Rights Reserved Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands \n\nFootball (Soccer) & Wrestling are my no.1 topics.\n\nManchester United “Is this actually worthy of this list?” when I first thought of it How else was I going to shoehorn in that I shared the same birthday with rapper “Jeezy” and Jackass star “Bam Margera” Erik ten Hag was born on 2nd February 1970 the now 53-year-old growing up in a world of “total football”  with Dutch superstar Johan Cruyff Elton John and watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show on repeat It’s hard though to state Erik as the MOST famous 2nd February baby – he shares the date with… The Waka-Waka (hey hey) singer who also shares a birthday with former husband and now Renault Twingo owner The once-power couple are both 2nd February babies Erik’s name might be dropping lower in the fame game here also born February 2nd is none other than reigning Mr Olympia Classic Physique winner (and beautiful man) unsure where he’d place in our rankings of fame here but TV “superstar” and all-round cool dude Dog the Bounty Hunter (Duane Chapman) shares the same birthday as all the above (Photo by Cees van Hoogdalem/Soccrates/Getty Images) founding the company ‘Ten Hag Assurantie Adviseurs B.V.’ in 1967 and in the process became one of the richest businessmen in the country Choosing football over almost guaranteed fortune was a bold decision by Erik but one I think with hindsight he will know he made the right decision Hennie is in fact still chairman of the company, while Michael and Rico maintain day-to-day duties. Don’t believe me, check out the official Ten Hag website where you’ll see the lovely Michel and Rico in all their suited n’ booted glory Despite a playing career that spanned from 1989 to 2002 Ten Hag actually had no major highlights to write home about a tough “start” for a career in football for the central defender winning the Eerste Divisie with De Graafschap in ’91 and lifting the trophy in the KNVB Cup (the Netherlands equivalent of the FA Cup) in 2000-2001 – his underdog FC Twente side defeating the mighty PSV on penalties after a 0-0 result (A PSV side that had Mark van Bommel & future Man United star Ruud van Nistelrooy!) and went on to play for De Graafschap (who he also won the Eerste Divisie with in ’91) RKC Waalwijk & Utrecht whilst also keeping his toes in with Twente (3 stints altogether) There was then a 10-year hiatus from football – as his playing days were over it took one Marc Overmars to lure Erik back into the fold as the then-shareholder of the club ‘Go Ahead Eagles’ and his instincts paid off instantly with Erik leading the team to its first promotion in 17 years Erik left Go Ahead Eagles to manage Bayern Munich II the German club giant’s reserves side from 2013 to 2015 and then Eredivisie club Utrecht called for him to take over the reins of their club he led them to fifth place and topped that in the 2016–17 season and booking a place in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers he was appointed as the head coach of Ajax linking up once again with Marc Overmars (at this stage the sporting director) and led the team to numerous triumphs in domestic competitions – and grabbing an elusive taste of European football success in their now infamous 2018-19 Champion’s League campaign Ten Hag was appointed as manager of Manchester United on 21 April 2022. Nearly one year from that appointment and we can see glimmers of “Fergie days” returning, as fans eagerly await this final run-in of the 2022-23 season which sees the Red Devils still fighting for more than one trophy alongside their newly polished 2022-23 EFL Cup In one of the least fun but incredibly random facts for you – I present or 5 foot 11 inches – Erik ten Hag is what some would call Imagine a lineup of celebrities all exactly the same height who would be in that lineup if they were all Erik’s height?!” I’ll not keep you waiting in suspense any more (pending you didn’t read the title of this paragraph)… It’s Pointless TV presenter Alexander Armstrong it can’t be (it is)… It’s Mr Bean himself Rowan Atkinson and someone quite astonishingly calling himself Bad Bunny*) *I jest, we know Bunny here at FanSided, shoutout to the gang over at Daily DDT and their incredible WrestleMania 39 coverage this past weekend! Schoof grinned, saying that would “of course be extremely” agreeable. Schoof is “confident that the Netherlands will win and that I can be at the final in Berlin on Sunday evening.” But Starmer will also be aiming for the opposite result. According to the British NATO delegation, he is a big football fan. Several Dutch municipalities will pause their council meetings so members can watch the match on Wednesday evening. In Groningen, Haaksbergen and Hof van Twente, among others, the City Council debates will be cut short. The council members in Groningen will start their meeting two hours earlier than usual on Wednesday. The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the lunch break will also be shortened. According to a municipal spokesperson, the council members hope to be finished by 8:30 p.m. “so that everyone can be home or wherever in time to watch the match.” The Haaksbergen meeting will start half an hour earlier than usual on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. “This means that after the council meeting, we in Haaksbergen can all watch the semi-final of the Dutch national team.” In the neighboring municipality of Hof van Twente, the council meeting will begin on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., an hour earlier than normal. A spokesperson confirms that this is because of the European Championship match. “This was decided in consultation with the factions. That does not mean that the meeting ends at 9p.m.” Earlier, the Harlingen City Council decided to start their meeting earlier in the day on Wednesday. If the agenda is not completed by 8:30 p.m., the meeting will be suspended and continued on Thursday evening. In Tiel, the council meeting has been moved from Wednesday to Tuesday. “This gives the representatives the necessary peace and quiet to properly discuss the financial state of affairs of the municipality and also enjoy the football,” the municipality said.
